Central Frontenac in good shape organizationally but a few things need ‘tweaking’ — report some refocusing, he said. “And in that respect, Central Frontenac is no different than most municipalities. In the Maybe Not So Good section, Pender said there was a “general feeling that the organization lacks direction. However, he suggested that much of this could be attributed to the fact that Central Frontenac Township has gone through so many Clerks in the past 10 years (at least seven and perhaps as many as 11 depending on how you want to count John Duchene’s three separate terms and Steve Silver’s acknowledged temporary tenure). Pender also said that there were some HR issues, with some staff feeling there was “a lack of consistency in applying policy (and) playing favourites. “But this is no different than in a family. My brother was the favourite. He said a lack of direction has lead to a lack of long-term planning. “Everyone is busy doing urgent work, nobody is doing the important work, he said.

News — There was mostly “good news and some “maybe not so good as Frontenac County CAO Kelly Pender, working as a non-billed consultant for Central Frontenac Township, delivered his Central Frontenac: State of the Organization report to Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. The report was produced through an arrangement brokered through Mayor Frances Smith. Pender was essentially hired as County CAO for his organizational expertise and the approach he took with this project was in the form of 23 confidential interviews with senior staff and Council members. “Central Frontenac has good people doing good work, he said. “There is near unanimity that Council/staff relations are good and there is trust. “There are more strengths than weaknesses, and the finance function is well positioned. Pender said the word “tweaking Local Girl Guides and Pathfinders Abby Clark, Katie Black and Sarah Ryan laid a wreath at the cenotaph came up most often in the interviews. “You’re doing the right thing 80 per during Sydenham’s Remembrance Day ceremony. Snowy weather can be a time for fun, especially for avid skiers or children who relish spending days off from school tossing snowballs and building snow forts. Many adults, however, do not look forward to the snow as much as youngsters do. Snow can be hazardous when driving, but putting snow tires on a vehicle can improve vehicle safety. According to information from the National +LJKZD\ 7UDIĂ€F 6DIHW\ $GPLQLVWUDWLRQ URXJKO\ 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States. Each winter, snowfall compounds treacherous road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents. It is important to know how to drive when weather conditions are dangerous. It is also wise WR RXWĂ€W D YHKLFOH WR UHGXFH LWV ULVN RI VOLSSLQJ DQG sliding on icy, snowy roads. Here are some tips to

How to stay safe on winter roads

follow. * Limit time spent driving in the snow. Avoid driving during snowstorms or directly after whenever possible. Snow not only makes roads slick, EXW IDOOLQJ Ă DNHV FDQ LPSDLU D GULYHU¡V YLVLELOLW\ and reduce his or her response time. Try to wait until snow-clearing teams have salted, plowed and sanded roads before venturing out. * Be sure you can see clearly. Clear off the snow from the windshield, side mirrors and windows so it does not compromise your view. Also, top RII WKH ZLQGVKLHOG Ă XLG VR \RX ZLOO EH DEOH WR clear snow and salt kick-up from your windVKLHOG /RRN IRU D ZDVKHU Ă XLG WKDW KDV DQ DQWLfreeze component, otherwise, your washer jets and wiper blades could be rendered useless. * Drive slowly. stop or maneuver around a potential obstacle when conditions are less than ideal. Traveling at a high speed will increase the risk of accidents. * Leave enough room between you and other motorists. Tailgating is responsible for many accidents, even when there is no snow on the ground. In inclement weather, it can take longer to slow or stop the car after pressing on the brakes. Having an additional space between your car and the one in front of you helps you avoid a collision. * Be aware of black ice. Black ice gets its name from its veritable invisibility. It is so thin and hard to spot, it just looks like the black asphalt of the road. Black ice tends to form in areas that have had snow or ice melt, which then refreezes at night when temperatures drop. Be extra cautious on turns and on highway exit and entrance

ramps, where black ice frequently forms. * Steer your car into the skid. Remain calm and do not panic and jam on the brakes if your car starts to skid. Slamming on the brakes will only exacerbate the skid. Rather, take your foot off the accelerator, allowing the car to naturally slow down as you turn your wheels into the direction the car is skidding. This should help right the car and get you back on track. * Invest in snow tires. Those who live in especially snowy climates and do a lot of driving would be wise to purchase snow tires. Snow tires, also called winter tires, have special tread patterns that offer better traction in snow and ice. They also are made from softer rubber compounds WKDQ UHJXODU WLUHV WKDW UHWDLQ WKHLU Ă H[LELOLW\ LQ cold weather, allowing the tire to conform to the surface of the road. Although many vehicles

come with technology to prevent accidents, they cannot do their jobs if tires are not maintaining their grip on the road. All-season tires are not a replacement for snow tires. All-season tires are designed to work in all sorts of conditions, from rainy weather to dry roads. Therefore, it is better to invest in a set of snow tires that will offer you better protection. When putting snow tires on a car or truck, be sure to do so on all the wheels -- not just the driving wheels. Otherwise you may still risk spin outs or uneven gripping of the road. It is not a good idea to keep snow tires on all year. Because they are softer, snow tires tend to be more noisy and can wear out faster in warmer weather. Therefore, switch out the tires at the beginning of the snowy season and then before the spring arrives anew.

News — It’s become a tradition for the Sharbot Lake Legion to provide lunch to all the current members of Canada’s military who come to participate in the Remembrance Day services. Of course there are current Legion members all about in their uniforms and medals. On this day in 2015, there was one medal in particular that it seemed none of the younger military could resist having a look at. It was displayed proudly on the chest of Sharbot Lake’s Don Antoine and proclaimed to the world that he was part of the Canadian contingent that liberated Holland from the Nazi occupation. “We liberated Holland in 1945,” he said. And there was a steady stream of young soldiers lining up to shake his hand. “It’s humbling to talk to him,” said MCpl. Todd Ward. “Especially with all he’s done for our country.

“It’s nice to see the veterans out today.” And Antoine had the same response for each who congratulated him, especially those who called him a ‘hero.’ “I’m not the hero,” Antoine said. “The ones who didn’t make it back, they’re the heroes. “All I did was do my job.” Antoine’s ‘job’ was as a platoon sergeant with the 48th Highlanders, a storied regiment by anybody’s standards. At age 93 (“getting younger every day and looking forward to the reunion in seven years”), only he and Herb Pike remain from regiment’s Second World War contingent. He still goes to all the reunions including one in Holland and more recently in Ottawa. He was a little perturbed at one aspect of the Ottawa celebration though. “We were on parade but they kept making me sit down,” he joked. Antoine joined the service when

he was 14 years old in March of 1940. The 48th Highlanders were deployed to Africa before participating in the landings on Sicily and the battle for Italy. “We were there two days before D-Day,” he said. After Italy was secured 22 months later, his unit was dispatched to Holland, where he stayed until the end of the war. He was wounded three times, all in the legs, but never let it get him down. Still, the memories remain vivid. “The horrors stay with you, you never forget,” he said. “But you put the war behind you.” Returning home, he went to school and graduated with a Bsc in pharmacology. He worked for many years at UpJohn. Twenty-two years ago, he retired to Sharbot Lake, where his wife Mimi still runs a successful real estate business. Continued on page 4

other ‘when you do this, it affects me,” Pender said.

Pender’s report makes 14 recommendations ranging from holding priorities and direction sessions with staff and Council, to new IT software consistent with the other municipalities in the County and more planning. Specifically, he recommended looking at consolidating public works facilities to keep costs at a minimum and the implementation of an ongoing asset management condition assessment that will drive replacement costs based on “need” rather than accounting and engineering standards. “Accountants and engineers will tell you that a given piece of equipment needs to be replaced at 10 years,” he said. “(But) the operators of the equipment will tell you that some equipment wears out after just eight years and some will last 14 years. “That’s asset management.” The report was generally well received by Council although Coun. Bill MacDonald questioned a suggestion that staff often work in “silos.” “Sometimes, staff need to tell each

The memories are still there, but some of them are better than others. For example, he’s one of the few Second World War veterans who has fond memories of the food. “In Holland, there were plenty of hugs from the women and they fed us good,” he said. “We had our own rations of course but there were tourist camps and restaurants. “It was good food.”

However, while the allies were eating well, the few Germans that were still floating around were not, and posed a problem at times. “The Germans knew it was over for them and they were starving,” he said. “We had to guard the food.” And there is that one memory that most soldiers agree will never go away. “The most important part of any battle is attack,” he said. “Once the bullets start flying, you do your job.”

Second World War veteran Don Antoine and ATIS Ian Clement share a laugh at the Remembrance Day luncheon in the Sharbot Lake Legion last week. Clement said vets like Antoine are a big reason he joined the military. “I wanted it to mean something,” he said.

BAG TAGS – A REMINDER

Garbage bags that do not have a tag, a partial tag or a tag that is not fully visible WILL NOT be picked up. Simply attach the tag back onto itself around the tied neck of the garbage bag as wrapping or winding it tightly does not make it visible as a full tag. Your on-going cooperation is appreciated.

New public works manger learning quickly about beavers in Central Frontenac News — Work crews are busy with grading, patching various roads and dealing with water, much of it due to the work of beavers, Public Works Manager John Badgley told Central Frontenac Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Beavers have been the bane of all

public works managers past in Central Frontenac and so it came as no surprise that they quickly became the topic of conversation. “Water and beavers . . . ,” said Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell, pausing to shake his head a moment. “Beaver prices have been so bad lately that trappers aren’t trapping them. “With the money we’re spending

on road repairs, should we be looking at some kind of bounty on beavers?” “Years ago, they did put a bounty on wolves in Frontenac County because they were causing so many problems,” said Mayor Frances Smith. “It’s something to think about.” Roads supervisor Steve Reynolds said they do have a trapper on call

but the beavers seem to be especially busy this fall. “I have a business card for you,” said Coun. Cindy Kelsey. “Get ahold of Will Deline (Frontenac Addington Trappers Council).” Badgley said they were working on a beavers strategy and would keep Council informed. Beavers aside, road crews have been busy trying to get as much done as possible before the snow flies, he said. There has been some “minor gravelling” on Welly Smith Road and Davey Road, brushing is ongoing and will continue until snow cover makes it unfeasible and the trucks have been prepped for the upcoming season. As well, the new lower speed zone signs (the bylaw reducing speeds was revised at the last Council meeting) have been installed on Henderson and Arden Roads. There has also been work done on Oso waste site, Badgley said. “The site has been surveyed and know we know the footprint of the site,” he said. “Robinson Construction was onsite last week creating a four to one slope on the outer edges

to ministry specifications. “Tackaberry was in and compacted the site (and) the next step is to put a cover of fill on top of the site (to be done in the next month).” Coun. Bill MacDonald observed that compacting often pushes the edge of the dumping area back, the area where people put their garbage bags. “Seniors have to walk a little further because it’s too soft to drive,” he said. “Either that or get help from attendants.” “We can push the edge back a bit,” said Reynolds. And speaking of waste management, Smith said that former waste management supervisor Kyle Labbett has been “let go” as his position was considered redundant and effectively eliminated. “He did a great job setting up waste management but that job is effectively done,” she said. “And the position of public works supervisor (Labbett’s other hat) is not and never has been a permanent position.” She said that with grant applications for large construction projects being unsuccessful, it didn’t make sense to keep Labbett on.

EDITORIAL Any time you can get expertise without spending a lot of tax dollars, it’s generally a good thing Column — Kudos to Frontenac County CAO Kelly Pender for the work he did looking at the state of Central Frontenac’s organization. Having someone from outside the organization take an objective look at things is generally a valuable exercise, even if the suggestions and recommendations aren’t acted on, although a couple of Pender’s points (i.e. consolidating public works facilities and developing a realistic asset management plan) have considerable merit. What most people don’t know is that Pender did most of this on his own time, at no expense to the taxpayers of Central Frontenac or the County. “Well, I did drive up here in a County vehicle, he said. In the past, Townships have generally shied away from such organizational reviews primarily because the consultants who do such work are incredibly expensive. Under the previous regime, the

County spent tens of thousands for consultants, which as often as not didn’t produce much in the way of concrete advice. However, Pender was chosen as CAO when Liz Savill left and as the County Councilors responsible for the hire were only too quick to point out, a big reason Pender got the job was his expertise, experience and knowledge of organizations. Indeed, he brought more to the table than many of the high-priced consultants. Now don’t anybody go expecting wholesale changes to the way of life in Sharbot Lake, Parham, Mountain Grove or Arden. Most of Pender’s observations and recommendations have to do with the internal workings of Township staff and their relationship with Council. In fact, many of his observations are of the common sense variety, something Central generally seems to do very well on its own but needs to be reminded of from time to time. Still, lest the former Belleville boy (I can say that because I’m a former Belleville boy too) gets a big head, there are a couple of things in the report that reflect a ridiculous philosophical view

Kanata Kourier-Standard

Kanata Kourier-Standard Arnprior Chronicle-Guide

that really needs to be put to rest. Specifically, there’s a note that “Old Township Boundaries are an impediment to progress. That’s a somewhat common idea that comes up from time to time (more often in South Frontenac) that has absolutely no basis in fact or observation. Leaving aside the concept that — just what the hell is ‘progress’ anyways — those old township boundaries are a huge part of our history, and should not be pushed aside for philosophy. It is often argued that a ‘Sharbot Lake got this so, Parham (Arden, Mountain Grove) should get something too’ mentality shouldn’t be listened to. Damn straight it should. Way back when the Provincial government was touting all the virtues of amalgamation, the Queen’s Park shills were promising profusely that no community would get left behind. Those were great words but the reality is that such things just don’t happen in the real world. The squeakiest wheels get the grease and in municipalities this translates into the larger communities getting the most tax dollar investments unless there is a system of checks and balances on them.

In Our Opinion

Like it or not, Uber comes to Kingston

Editorial - The controversial transportation network Uber has finally made its way to Kingston. Uber Canada introduced its highly popular ridesharing product, uberX, to several communities in Ontario last week including Kingston, Windsor and the Niagara Region increasing availability to over 350 communities now. “Uber’s launch today brings ridesharing to over half a million more Ontarians, who now have access to a safe, reliable, affordable way to get around. Thousands of people in these communities have already downloaded the Uber app and hundreds have signed up to earn on our platform as driver-partners, said Ian Black, General Manager of Uber Canada in a press release. “By launching our service now, we help boost local economies - with the opening of these markets, Uber stands to create more than 500 driver partner jobs in these communities over the next year. While many in the community may welcome Uber, there has been a fair bit of backlash over the company since it launched in 2009. In many cities, Uber has been met by hostility from both the public and other taxi companies with some even protesting the company, but are they really so bad? Uber is surely taking business away from other transportation companies, but there are also providing more options for those who need to get around in the city. Those who use taxi services are used to calling a cab and waiting until they arrive or hailing a cab on the street and while that will surely continue, Uber is making things more convenient for younger ride seekers with their app, on demand service and the ability to ride share. There has also been controversy over the screening and training of drivers, but how much do we really know about taxi drivers and their credentials when we get into a cab? We see their licence and the company logo, but they could just as easily get into an accident as anyone else on the road. All Canadian rideshare drivers who partner with Uber must pass background checks that include both a National Criminal Record Check of Federal RCMP databases and a drivers’ motor vehicle records screen. Uber also integrates rating systems for both drivers and passengers, creating more incentive for drivers to perform well to receive more business. While Uber has a reputation, the company is new to Kingston and hopefully our community won’t be too quick to judge something that could potentially have a positive impact on many people in the city.

2015 shaping up to be one of the best building years in Central Frontenac By Craig Bakay

News — Construction-wise, Central Frontenac is in a good position for one of its best years ever, Chief Building Official Jeremy Neven told Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. “We’re on track for one of the best years since I’ve been here, Neven said. “We’re really moving towards a self-funded model where we won’t have to access the budget for funds. “That’s kind of where we wanted to be, said Mayor Frances Smith. Construction value, to date, is $6.4 million (which includes the Parham firehall) compared with $4.3 million

in 2014 and $5.1 million in 2013, he said. Permit fees to date have brought in $91,099 on 104 permits compared with $54,938 on 98 permits and $60,319 on 104 permits in 2013. Another interesting statistic is there have been 16 new residential units and only two new seasonal units this year. In 2014 there were nine new residential units and only one new seasonal unit. In 2013, the numbers were 13 and one. This prompted Coun. Tom Dewey to ask if this indicated a trend. “I’m wondering if this is a change in demographics, Dewey said. “Is it a trend towards more permanent homes?

“I would caution on that,â€? Neven said. “There are more buildings being built that are designed for year-round occupancy but they’re still being used as cottages.â€? ••• Mayor Frances Smith announced that a hoped-for Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund grant request for construction in the hamlet of Sharbot Lake has been turned down. “We’re not getting the money to finish construction,â€? she said. “There is infrastructure money around. “We just have to keep at it until we get some.â€? • • • Still with the Mayor’s announce-

ments, Smith said the formally North of Seven Mayors group she’s been meeting with has come up with a new name that they feel is more representative of their membership. The new moniker is The Rural Mayors Forum of Eastern Ontario. ••• One thing Council will have on its plate in the near future is a bylaw regulating advertising signage. Clerk Cathy MacMunn said there was a resolution passed in 2001 to create a proposed bylaw but it was never completed, leaving the Township without a bylaw. “The feeling of the Council of the day that it would be detrimental to

business, said Coun. Bill MacDonald. ••• Coun. Brent Cameron advised that the new Frontenac Community Arena website is now up and running. The address is www.frontenacarena.com and while it is still a work in progress, it does contain schedules for public skating as well as ice rental information, including birthday parties and private functions, information on the Flyers and Fury minor hockey teams and a nod to three of the NHL draft picks (Mike Smith, Marty Abrams and Trevor Stienberg) who got their start in the building over its 40 years

Community members work together to save more families from Syria with concert and silent auction By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Events – Earlier this year, as news of refugee crises made more and more headlines, a group of friends in Kingston decided they wanted to help. They started looking into the process of sponsoring a family, but quickly realized it was a bit more complicated than they expected.

“There is a lot of insurance, liability and paperwork associated with sponsorship, so instead we looked for a group to work with and support that already had the infrastructure set up,” explained Cat London. The group found ‘Save a Family from Syria’ (SAFFS) which consists of a partnership between the Four Rivers Presbytery of the United Church of Canada and the Islamic

Society of Kingston. At the time, the group had already sponsored one family and they were focusing on fundraising for a second. “We knew how to fundraise, so we offered to help,” said London. “We helped them raise $25,000 in just under three weeks and that inspired us to raise funds to help more families.” This time around, London and her friends knew they would have to do more than just simply ask people for money so they started planning a fundraising event. “We thought we’d try to make it as big as possible for a local group so we asked Sarah Harmer if she’d play a concert and she said yes,” said London. “Then we started looking at

venues. We thought of the Isabel and we asked Queen’s and they donated the space. Everything just kind of came together and the local community has just jumped on board.” These donations of time and space have taken away the overhead costs for the concert so all proceeds can go to SAFFS; in addition to the concert, the groups have also put together a silent auction with numerous items. “The silent auction has been the easiest thing to sell. Nobody says no and everyone is being so generous,” said London. “We have been so impressed with the community and everyone that is coming forward.” Many of the auction items are things that are not otherwise avail-

and include an offer from author Steven Heighton to attend a book club and provide 12 signed copies of his book to book club members, an offer from author Y.S. Lee to name a character after the winner in the novel she is currently writing, a tour from the owners of Fare Well Farm of their farm followed by a picnic provided by Epicurious Catering, children’s musician Gary Rasberry is offering a house concert and signed CDs and much more. “We still have items that we are revealing every day and the community is bidding generously,” said London. The groups hope to fully fund the sponsorship of the third family from Syria through the event and silent auction and hopefully put a dent in sponsoring a fourth. The current family is living in a Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. Moyaad and Mariam and their children Omar, 6, Sham, 2, and Noor, 8 months, are refugees, identified and designated by the United Nations and are related to the other families who have already made Kingston their new home. Kingstonians have already shown that they care about supporting these families and London hopes that will continue: “People feel very strongly about this cause. People who are lucky like we are and live in a safe country, have a safe job and a safe place to raise their family are starting to realize how many other people don’t have that and are realizing that it is kind of our responsibility to do something about it and this is a simple way to take action.” The event takes place Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.theisabel.ca/content/ sarah-harmer The silent auction runs until Nov. 21 at 9 p.m. and bids can be placed at https://www.32auctions. com/organizations/22865/ auctions/26762?page=1

Do you know that smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer? Although smoking causes the majority of lung cancer cases, it is highly unfortunate that a self-inflicted stigma still surrounds being diagnosed with this disease. A large number of lung cancer patients are former smokers, and 15 per cent are “never smokers”. Other causes of lung cancer may include asbestos, radon, occupational exposure to certain chemicals, air pollution, lung diseases and having a family history of the disease. According to the Canadian Cancer Statistics 2015 report - released by the Canadian Cancer Society, in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Statistics Canada, lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada due to its very low survival rate. In fact, it takes more Canadian lives than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. Luckily, there are several ongoing efforts to tackle this major health challenge. To help prevent smoking, Bill 45 was passed earlier this year in Ontario. This landmark legislation bans the sale of all flavoured tobacco, including menthol, and regulates the sale, use and promotion of ecigarettes. The Canadian Cancer Society worked closely with multiple organizations for more than five years to achieve this goal. The Society is also raising awareness on radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer. What is radon gas? Radon is a colourless, odourless gas naturally found in the environment that can enter a house through cracks and crevices. It is a contributing factor to an estimated 3,000 lung cancer associated deaths per year in Canada. Surprisingly, a 2014 survey revealed that 96 per cent of Canadians have not tested their homes, even though an inexpensive test kit can be purchased at a local hardware store or a professional can be hired to perform the test. In addition, several efforts are ongoing to try

to improve the outcome for cancer patients diagnosed with lung cancer. Last November, Queen’s University announced that the NCIC Clinical Trials Group at its Cancer Research Institute will begin a major international clinical trial, supported by the Canadian Cancer Society, aimed at curing patients with the most common type of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The trial is currently recruiting up to 1,100 patients around the world, including in Kingston, to test if a new drug can help the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer in patients who have already received standard treatment. Immunotherapy is a promising way to treat cancer and has had some initial success in treating skin cancers. The NCIC Clinical Trials Group is also leading another clinical trial looking to see whether reolysin, a cancer-fighting virus, can be given in combination with chemotherapy and whether it works better than chemotherapy alone for patients with advanced NSCLC. Reolysin is just one example of a virus that is being used to specifically target and kill cancer cells, while leaving normal cells unharmed. The Canadian Cancer Society funds more lung cancer research than any other national charity, however, more work is needed to make an impact against this disease. By focusing on increased prevention efforts, and research related to early detection and better treatments, hopefully we can reduce the number of Canadians, smokers and non-smokers alike, who are affected by this disease. This article was written by Mathieu J.F. Crupi, a PhD candidate from the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at the Queen’s University Cancer Research Institute, and a Canadian Cancer Society Research Information Outreach Team (RIOT) member.

“Happy days are here again”: The Wolfe Islander III returns home at last By Hollie Pratt-Campbell

The return of the Wolfe Islander III was a jubilant occasion for islander Bev Sherman, who waited expectantly at the ferry’s downtown Kingston dock Sunday afternoon to catch a first glimpse of the newly-renovated vessel. “We’ve been promised so many times that it would be here and it’s finally here today so I wanted to see it first,” she said. “I didn’t want to wait until tomorrow when I go to town, I wanted to see it today.” While waiting, Sherman received an excited call from her daughter, who was watching the ferry pass at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour alongside her husband, a native of Amherst Island. “It’s been really hard for us but I feel worse for Amherst Island, they’ve had it worse than we have,” Sherman noted. Now, at long last, both islands have their ferries back; Frontenac II, which has been serving Wolfe Island since the departure of its ferry in April, will immediately return to regular service on Amherst Island. The Quinte Loyalist, which has been serving Amherst Island in its regular ferry’s absence, will subsequently return to its home at Glenora. Both replacement

ferries were significantly smaller than the regular vessels, resulting in longer wait times and lost revenues for Wolfe Island and Amherst Island residents and businesses. However, the Wolfe Islander’s sevenmonth stay at Heddle Marine in Hamilton wasn’t all for naught. MPP Sophie Kiwala, who joined the happy crowd of people at the pier to welcome the ferry home, explained that it returns with a new, larger wheelhouse, which has more room for electrical and modern day equipment. It now also features 360-degree visibility, which should make a significant difference for the crew. “The one that they had before had some blind spots,” said Kiwala. She added that the floor in the wheelhouse is now also heated. “That will be quite a pleasure for the crew, I think, in the wintertime because it was very, very difficult to stay warm and comfortable,” Kiwala remarked. “And there’s new insulation in the walls around the windows in the seating area, everything’s going to be painted. It’s going to come back looking brand new.” Kiwala said that there were a number of reasons for the multiple delays of the ferry’s return over the summer, not the

least of which being that Heddle Marina is the only marina in the area that can work on boats as large as the Wolfe Islander III and it was therefore very busy: “They were the only ones who bid on the job and they were the only ones who were capable of taking it in.” Kiwala added that some unexpected extra work was also required around one

of the walls. “They ended up having to take out a lot of the insulation that went around the window and they put new insulation and stabilizer bars in between the two panes that go all the way around the window so actually it’s much stronger ferry now,” she explained. Just before 1 p.m., those waiting at the

ferry dock at last caught a glimpse of the new and improved Wolfe Islander III on the horizon, and cheers erupted from the small but enthusiastic crowd. “It’s been a long summer and fall,” remarked Sherman. “We expected it back at the end of June and it’s still not back until today, but we’ve put all that behind us now. We’re excited about today.”

The Wolfe Islander III returns home at last.

KGH Auxiliary launches annual teddy bear campaign By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

News – It’s that time of year again – time to deck the halls with boughs of holly - or in the case of KGH, lots and lots of teddy bears. On Nov. 9, the Kingston General Hospital Auxiliary kicked off their annual ‘Show Children You Care’ teddy bear fundraising campaign to support the purchase of patient-

care equipment for the pediatric department. This year’s campaign, which runs from Nov. 9 to Dec. 21, hopes to sell 200 teddy bears at a cost of $100 each, raising $20,000 to purchase four CARESCAPE V100 monitors. These monitors will help front-line staff perform quick and accurate physical assessments on patients in the pediatric unit. “These machines are really im-

portant because they allow us to analyze vital signs right at the bedside,” explained Lynn Newton, pediatric nurse practitioner at KGH. “Kids get sick really quickly, but they also get better quickly too and these machines will allows us to provide better and more efficient treatment to get them home sooner.” In the past 11 years, KGH Auxilary has raised over $250,000 for the pediatric department, enabling the purchase of machines like a linear array probe, intervenes IV pumps, electric breast pumps, pediatric bladder scanners and specialized scales for weighing wheelchair bound children. Tabitha Lollar knows firsthand the impact these machines can make; Lollar spoke at this year’s campaign launch and was accompanied by her husband Jeff Phillips and their kids, Aida, Emmett

and Maeve. Five-year old Aida was admitted to the KGH Pediatric Unit several times over a four-year period because of seizures. “As parents we had to entrust the health of our child to EMTs, nurses and doctors and we will never forget their kindness,” said Lollar. “I don’t know how they do it day in and day out, working with some of the littlest patients with some of the worst health problems. It must wear on them, but you would never know.” Each bear sponsored through the campaign will wear a tag acknowledging the name of its donor and will then be placed in the Watkins Lobby of KGH on a festive tree. Donors will receive a smaller companion bear that they can keep themselves or donate back for hospitalized children. Lollar spoke of the importance of the bears themselves and assured

donors that donated bears would be well taken care of in the pediatric department. “Those teddy bears are very, very loved,” she said. “They stayed safely tucked away in the crook of Aida’s elbow during her entire stay.” Lollar urged community members to give generously to this year’s campaign to help other kids, like Aida, get the care they need. “We will never be able to thank the medical community enough for the continual care they have provided for Aida and we are very grateful to the KGH Auxiliary for letting us share our story.” Those interested in sponsoring a bear and supporting the campaign can call 613.549.6666 ext. 6352, email hillt@kgh.kari.net or drop by the Kingston Kawartha Credit Union or the volunteer office at KGH.

The Kingston Frontenacs got a measure of revenge against North Bay at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on Nov. 6 by winning the Remembrance Day game 4-1. It was their first meeting since the Battalion swept the Frontenacs in the first round of the OHL play-offs last season. It was an intense physical rivalry with five fights. With the win against the Battalion Kingston moved back into first place in the OHL Eastern Conference. The Frontenacs had a strong performance from Lawson Crouse who had a goal and two assists. Kingston also had scoring from Conor McGlynn, Juho Lammikko and Cody Caron who scored his first goal for the Frontenacs. Brett Mackenzie had the lone goal for North Bay. The Frontenacs’ success continued at home the next night when they defeated the Kitchener Rangers 5-3. Kitchener is the first place team in the Western Conference. Photo/John Harman

‘Guys and Dolls’ take the stage at Holy Cross hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca

Events - The annual musical is always a very special and memorable event at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. “It’s like our own little Glee that we have going on at the school,” says drama and vocal music teacher/musical director Stacy Check-Drumm, explaining that each year everyone from the theatre kids to the jocks comes together to participate in the show. “It’s the one thing that we have at the school that really pulls from all areas of the school, all grade levels from Grade 9 to Grade 12. They’re all working together.” This year’s production of Guys and Dolls is no exception. “Guys and Dolls has always been one of my favourites,” Check-Drumm notes. “I was actually in it back in 1993 at the Grand Theatre and so I have a real connection to it.” She adds that the musical, which tells the story of gamblers and missionaries crossing paths in 1950s New York, still resonates with kids today. “It’s such a classic Broadway musical. It’s ‘old’, but the kids still love it. They still find it very cool. It’s got such great jazz pieces, it’s all about crap shooting and gamblers. I find it’s one of those musicals that appeals to all ages.” Grade 12 student Anthony Pacheco plays the lead role of Sky Masterson. “Sky is a really cool guy,” he explains. “He’s the top of the top, the best there is at everything. He can get any girl he wants to, he’s a gambler, and all he needs is himself. He doesn’t need the company of any girl.” Audiences might remember Pacheco from last year’s production of Shrek, in which he played the (very short) character Lord Farquaad. “It’s a really big transition between the two roles because as Farquaad I was on my knees the whole time and I was running around - it was crazy.” Still, the experience taught him a lot about working in theatre. “I learned how to deal with an audience - I’d never been in front of a big audience that much before,” Pacheco says, adding that participating in these shows has allowed him to find his true passion in life, and he hopes to pursue musical theatre as a career after completing a degree in it from Sheridan College in Toronto. “It’s so much fun. I love to sing, I love to act. I’m not so good at dancing but I love to do it anyway, I love to try,” he laughs. Grade 12 student Taylor DaSilva, who plays the role of Miss Adelaide, describes Guys and Dolls as the “icing on the cake” of her Holy Cross musical experiences. “I’ve been in it every year since Grade 9 and I’m finally getting a lead role,” she says. “Miss Adelaide is very upbeat, happy - she’s kind of the comic relief. She

has some really great, fun numbers. She dances at the hot box and she has been [Nathan Detroit’s] fiancé for 14 years.” She says the most challenging aspect of the role has been mastering the character’s New York accent. “It took me quite a while to learn the New York accent but with lots of help I finally think I have it down pretty well.”

DaSilva encourages everyone in the community to come check out Guys and Dolls. “This is one of the best schools for musical theatre and it’s such a great show. So much effort is put into it and everybody is 100 per cent into every show and every rehearsal.” Check-Drumm

agrees, noting that this really is some of the best theatre in Kingston. “It’s kind of a best kept secret because it’s mostly within the school community that we draw from. But if people from outside of the community come in, they’re going to see some amazing theatre on stage. Most people will leave

thinking ‘I can’t believe that was a high school production, I would have paid a lot more to see that’.” Guys and Dolls runs at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School from Nov. 25-28 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15. Please call the school at 613-384-1919 for information.

worked on her art and was fascinated by Native Canadian art, especially work from British Columbia, because of the simplicity of design. “I’ve always wanted to just create art, she said. “Some are more driven than others to be creative. Often, because I’m naturally shy and reserved, it’s easy to knock me off that drive. I had a teacher in high school and one in university who knocked me off my path. But art is something you can’t stop. She explained that she started university late, at the age of 26, when she was accepted into the fine art program at Queen’s University. Artist Patricia Van Asperen at work on one of her sculpting projects. After graduation, she studied graphic Photo by Michael East design at St. Lawrence College and then worked as an illustrator for several years, until companies started to downsize.

There’s a mixture of gossamer and strength in Patricia Van Asperen’s art. There’s also a soothing calmness to her creations. Little wonder, considering her philosophy and background. “I like producing art that’s peaceful, she said. “I think part of it is because I had a really chaotic youth. I’ve noticed certain personality traits of people who grow up in chaos. They either go for crazy all their lives or they spend their time seeking peace. I’m a peace seeker. Van Asperen exudes a gentle presence at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, where you’ll find her in her studio (214C), which she shares with fellow artist Peggy Fussell. Van Asperen is one of the original Tett artists. She sculpts with a form of refined paper mulch. “It’s air dried, so I don’t have to use a kiln, she said. “It’s quite lovely and has a bit of tensile strength because of the wood fibres. It’s strong than people think, and it’s very light. I love to carve. It’s my thing. She explained that she’s tried carving stone and harder plaster, but doesn’t enjoy it as much. “I could use pneumatic tools, but I don’t like that, she said. “I have to be hands-on with everything I make. I have to have my fingers in it, otherwise it’s not an extension of who I am and what my art is about. There’s a serenity that infuses her finished pieces, just as a serenity surrounds her. “A lot of artists seem to be inspired by intense emotions; that’s what drives them, she said. “That doesn’t work for me. I need intense calm and peace. Her current work is taking flight. “I go through phases, she said. “Right now it’s wings. I knew I wanted to make a bird. I’ve made lots of feather pieces. When I’m sitting around at night, I keep making them. She’s also working on a dragonfly. More wings. When asked to describe her work, she laughed. “It’s very white. I have this truth to material thing, she said. “I don’t like painting or covering up my work. The thing with sculptures is that they’re like black and white photos. The less colour there is, the more you get into looking at clay

and how it’s formed. Van Asperen is never sure where her work is headed until she’s finished. “Most of what I do is intuitive, she said. “I don’t like to know where I’m going to end up. Even when I’m at home doing nothing, I’m always doing something with my hands: crocheting, knitting, playing with clay. Eventually an idea comes that shows me where I want to go. Born in Ottawa, Van Asperen was adopted at the age of eight and lived in Brockville until the end of high school. She smiled as she said her interest in art started in Grade 8. “I was put in music because you had to take a band class, she said. “But I couldn’t play my instrument worth beans, so they kicked me out of band and put me in an art class for the musically inept. It took off from there. Throughout high school she

Art as peace Continued from page 21

“By that point, I’d started having my little people, and I ended up doing art in the kitchen, she said. She stopped and smiled again before continuing. “It was more like the living room. At the time I was doing illustration, not sculpture; we didn’t have the space and I didn’t want the kids eating clay. As soon as they got to elementary school, I got into sculpting. She became more involved in the Kingston arts community. She liked hanging out at Modern Fuel, which, like Van Asperen is now located in the Tett Centre, but, at the time, was housed in a

building on Queen Street. Kevin [Rodgers, Artistic Director of Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre] asked me to join YOGS, Your Own Graduate School. Artists were invited to work in the Modern Fuel space for a month. While there, Van Asperen heard about the artist creativity studios that were scheduled to open in the Tett Centre at the end of 2014. She applied and made it through the jury process to be accepted as an artist at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. Van Asperen said that, within her artistic space in the Tett Centre, she’s feeling much more a part of Kingston’s artistic community. She serves as the

artists’ representative on the Tett’s Board of Directors. “I’m actually having a really great time being at the board meetings, and I’m learning a lot.â€? On the home front, Van Asperen and her husband, Michael East, have shared the parenting of several children. “I have two biological, four blended and three foster children,â€? she said. “The children we’ve taken on have tended to be teenage girls. For once I was grateful for the fleece lined navy blue bloomers that I had to wear as soon as the cold Fall days rolled around. Usually, I hated them with a passion. I used to think I was the only one at the Northcote School who had to wear them. But I learned that

all of the girls in the Junior Grades, with the exception of bad Marguirite of course, put them on when winter was about to set in. Nonetheless that year, I was more than grateful for the bloomers that came once a year from Eaton’s catalogue, replacing the ones that would end up in the rag bag, and eventually become part of the endless braided rugs that covered our floors in the wintertime. My sudden gratitude for the bloomers had to do with the underpants Mother made that year out of the flour bags she brought home from the grist

job of getting them ready to be made into underpants, tea towels, aprons or whatever else Mother found the need for, was no easy task. They had to have their seams opened, then washed at least twice to get rid of whatever flour was still holding on, and then they got the Javel treatment, to try to get rid of as much of the printing as possible that adorned every bag. Well, that year, were we in for a surprise! For some reason, the company decided to print both sides of the bags. Always, before that year, the printing was on one side, and the other was as white as the driven snow. And it was the white side that became bloomers, tea towels and pillow slips. The printed side was used whenever there was a need for a clean rag for any number of chores around the house. And so, to my horror, my new bloomers, the printing held fast in spite

mill in Renfrew. You never wore the navy bloomers next to your skin. You always wore underpants, which were homemade. Mother’s trip to the grist mill that year was no different from any other. The bags were piled in stacks along one wall, and beside each pile there was a price written in chalk on the floor. Of course, Mother never paid the price that was marked. She always managed to talk down the man who ran the grist mall, once telling him she saw better bags hanging in the cow byre at home. He was used to Mother’s negotiations, and she always ended up paying her price, which I thought was pretty clever of Mother, who before she moved from New York City to the backwoods of Renfrew County, had never laid eyes on a flour bag in her life! Once we got the bags home, the

of several washings and soaking in Javel water. There was nothing I could do, but wear the hateful things under my fleece lined blue bloomers. In those days, it wasn’t unusual to have your backside soaked to the skin from sliding down snow piles, or covered in mud, or just damp to the touch from the intense blast of the old stove in the middle of the room that pounded out a heat like you wouldn’t believe. And so we girls with the sodden seats would go into the cloak room at the back of the school room, take off the bloomers, and tuck them into the sleeve of our coat. Well! There was no way I was going to shed those navy blue fleece lined bloomers and expose my newly made flour -bag underwear with the vivid printing as plain as the nose on your face. And so I sweated it out in my seat, grateful for the first time in my life for the hateful blue bloomers. And it didn’t matter how often those underpants were washed, the dye held fast. And I didn’t have too many other pairs to fall back on either. My sister Audrey said I could fade out the bright navy and red print by rubbing it all over with chalk. Of course, we both knew that would only be a temporary cure. No, there was no doubt about it, the dye was there to stay. I was sure I was the only one at the Northcote School with PRIDE OF THE VALLEY written across her seat. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books?
