Fire department to fill sprinkler system at GREC six times a year for testing By Craig Bakay Reporter
Celebrating haggis and everything Scottish Gazette Events – After giving the Address to the Haggis, Bill Robertson of Ancient St. John’s Lodge #3 cuts the haggis for the Robbie Burns night at Oso Hall in Sharbot Lake last weekend as organizer Kathleen White and piper Jeff Donnelly look on. The evening was a joint venture between the local Masonic Lodge and firefighters and is dedicated to Keith Hawley who has served both organizations for more than 60 years. White said they moved to Oso Hall from the Legion because of its larger capacity (120 people vs 80) but still had a waiting list. Photo/Craig Bakay

Gazette News — Central Frontenac Council approved a request from Granite Ridge Education Centre to have the fire department fill a water tank for the sprinkler system at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Fire Chief Bill Young told Council that the fire department had received the request. “They asked if we could fill the tank for the sprinkler system as they have to test it weekly, which takes an amount of water each test,” Young said. “It’s a 50,000-gallon tank and the well there doesn’t have the capacity.” Young estimated it would take about six loads of water a year to keep the tank filled and that at $110 per load, “the department’s expenses would be covered with a little bit extra.” He estimated the cost of two firefighters and equipment would be about $50 per load. Coun. Victor Heese asked if other schools got water from townships. He also said he felt the price was “a bit low.” “Most other schools are on municipal water,” Young said. Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell also questioned the price. “We have a bylaw that governs the filling of pools,” Riddell said. “People asking for a spring top-off were being charged around $450.” Coun. Bill MacDonald said: “I’m in favour of this because they’re paying for it
but I wonder are we competing with anybody in private business here?” “I know of two water haulers in the area but they’re both not in the Township,” said Young. MacDonald also asked if having a pumper do this kind of duty would put the Township at risk from it not being available for the time the operation would take. Young said it wouldn’t. Coun. Tom Dewey said he’d be in favour as long as it didn’t put the Township at risk in terms of liabilities like insurance and safety. Young said he’d make sure the fire department faced no liability issues and Council approved the measure. Still with the fire department, Young said now that all the figures are in, 2014 was one of the quietest years on record for fire calls. “Last year, we had 231 calls,” Young said. “That’s down quite a bit from previous years where we had been averaging 350-375 calls a year.” Young said he didn’t know why calls were down. “We didn’t have one grass fire and we didn’t have a burn ban last year,” he said. “And there were only two structure fires. “Some firefighters weren’t happy about the lack of work but I am.” Young said “on paper” there are 110 volunteer firefighters on the department roster. “Quite a few are juniors (under age 18 and not allowed to go into a ‘hot zone’) and many are between the ages of 20 and 35,” Young said.

Central Frontenac to look at speeds on Long Lake Road Reporter
Gazette News — Central Frontenac Township staff will take a look at reducing speeds on Long Lake Road around the beach following an impassioned plea by Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell at last week’s regular Council meeting in Sharbot Lake. Riddell said he’d been contacted by several residents in the area concerned over the speeds they claimed to have observed on the road, which does have some rather tight curves. The current speed limit is 80 kph. The matter was referred to staff for a report. Riddell said he’d also had inquiries about traffic lights at the intersection of Road 38 and Hwy 7 in Sharbot Lake, but although referring that matter to staff also, several councilors had misgivings about the potential for success. “I know they (Ministry of Transportation) turned down a similar request in Kaladar,” said Coun. Cindy Kelsey. “And Hwy 7 at 41 is every bit as busy as Sharbot Lake.” “It’s a matter of cost,” said Coun. Tom Dewey. “We were told it would be around $2 million for lights at Arden. “They even turned us down for a turning lane.” Road 38 is the Township’s responsibility while Hwy 7 is a responsibility of the Province.
••• Council set aside Friday, Feb. 20 for an all-day session to deal with the 2015 budget. The meeting is open to the public but the location hasn’t yet been determined. ••• Although the actual agenda is not yet set, Central Frontenac Council has agreed to a joint meeting with North Frontenac in North Frontenac on March 19 from 2-4 p.m. to discuss matters of mutual concern. Several councilors suggested a follow-up meeting in the following months in Central Frontenac Township. ••• Council approved an increase in the rate it pays its current cemetery contractor, Ralph Babcock, for opening of graves and cremations. “His rates have been the same since 2008,” said Dep. Clerk Cathy MacMunn. “And we’ll still make a little bit even with the increase.” Currently, Babcock is paid $275 for winter burials, $200 for summer burials and $80 for cremations. As of Feb.1, the rate will be $360 for burials (winter or summer) and $80 for cremations. “This increase does not affect his cemetery contract (for maintenance, grass cutting, etc) of $48,000 per year,” said MacMunn. “Presently, he digs all the graves by hand and if he chooses to rent an excavator, that cost would be paid by him directly. “We only do cremation burials during the spring and summer.”

••• Council agreed to have staff look into a request from resident Angela Lee for a reduction in interest owed on back taxes. Lee told Council she’d just received the property in family court as part of a settlement for child support payments and she’d
like to sell it to help raise her four children. But the property essentially belonged to her ex-husband and is in need of repair before it in saleable condition, she said.

Shake off the February blahs at KCHC winter carnival By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Events – Who says you can’t have a carnival in the winter? Certainly not the Kingston Community Health Centre (KCHC); this year they are celebrating their seventh annual Winter Carnival with a mixture of indoor and outdoor events for the whole family. “This year most of the activities are inside, but we will have outdoor wagon rides too,” explained event organizer Stephanie MacBeth. “We’ll have different types of drum-
ming seminars happening, crafts, a balloon clown, and of course a BBQ.” The event has been a success throughout the years and started after MacBeth and a co-worker were reminiscing about Winter Carnivals they used to frequent as kids. “We were sitting around and I was lamenting about my childhood in Richmond Hill and the winter carnival that we used to have with ice sculptures, sledding, outdoor activities and indoor activities and I wanted that here.” KCHC puts on a number of com-
munity gatherings each year including the fall Scarecrow Festival, the Get Active fair in the spring and the annual Summer Celebration. Each event aims to engage community members and attracts anywhere from 400-1,000 people annually. “We partner with multiple groups in the community like the Credit Union and Kingston Literacy, and lots of other organizations for each event,” said MacBeth. “For the carnival we have about 20 community partners coming together and each puts on an activity and it’s really a way to get people engaged.”
The carnival is completely free of charge and MacBeth loves seeing all of the families and community members that come out and enjoy the day. “I love seeing everyone come together. People are happy and smiling and having a great time and they are interacting in a way that they may not have the opportunity to throughout the cold winter months.” The event is being held at the Salvation Army Rideau Heights Community Church on Weller Avenue. While it has also been held at skating rinks and different venues through-

out the years, MacBeth finds that the church offers the best space for the variety of events. She hopes people will come out and enjoy the day. “I think people should come out to engage with other people from their community. You also get to know people who provide resources in the community and help others. It’s a great afternoon and a great way to get out of the house.” The KCHC Winter Carnival will being held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Salvation Army Rideau Heights Community Church, 183 Weller Ave from noon to 3 p.m.

Council gets insight into pioneer life and Frontenac Heritage Festival Gazette News — The tomahawk was a most useful tool to early settlers in this area, three-time Provincial Tomahawk Throwing Champ Mike Procter told Central Frontenac Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Dressed in colourful period regalia, Procter was at the meeting to give Council a rundown on activities planned for the 9th annual Frontenac Heritage Festival (Feb. 13-16) as well as providing some insights into tomahawks, Hudson’s Bay blankets and pioneer life in general. “The tomahawk is a useful and versatile tool,” Procter said. “It could be used for cutting, digging, cracking nuts, or in a pinch — as a paddle. “But where it really shines is in the throwing competitions.” Procter said it would be rare for someone involved in an actual battle
to actually throw their ’hawk as they would not want to lose it. However, throwing it in competition was not only recreational, it was a way to achieve intimidation over one’s competitors. “They didn’t have Nintendo in those days and also there wasn’t an awful lot of cleared space, so tomahawk throwing was a way to get together in a smaller area,” he said. “Being a good thrower meant having an ‘intimidation’ factor and it’s not limited to men. “I know a very good-looking girl who’s a champion thrower and nobody messes with her.” Procter also brought a classic Hudson’s Bay blanket as well as wearing a Hudson’s Bay coat. “They’re not making Hudson’s Bay blankets any more, and that’s unfortunate,” he said. “They’re just about the warmest thing around because they’re wool and the fibres are woven so tight.” Procter also said the colour of the
blanket refers to where they were originally used most — red for TroisRivieres, blue for Montreal and the red/yellow/green/black striped ones for Quebec City. “I use this one and a sleeping bag when I’m winter camping and I’m very warm even in -20 weather,” he said. “They can also be used as a lean-to and they have 70 per cent heat retention even when wet. “Cotton’s heat retention when wet is zero.” And speaking of winter camping, Procter and fellow re-inactor Bob Miller will once again have a tent and displays set up at Kennebec Mike Procter shows the proper technique for paddling with a tomahawk Hall for the FHF. In Our Opinion
The American-Canadian retail dilemma
Policing costs getting out of hand, so what are the options? Craig Bakay
is another matter entirely. See, the OPP kind of has municipalities over a barrel in that the Municipal Act requires said municipalities have to provide adequate policing for their community. Now, obviously what constitutes ‘adequate’ policing will be different for each person deliberating on the matter (we anarchists would be happy with a couple of retired guys carrying baseball bats and driving a pickup, but that’s another column). However, under the current scheme of things, the OPP gets to decide what’s necessary and, more importantly, they get to decide what that’s going to cost — no haggling, no discussion, no recourse. It’s a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. Perhaps the OPP simply don’t want the hassles of patrolling Sharbot Lake or Harrowsmith streets late at night and if municipalities want them to do it, they’ll have to pay through the nose for it. However, skeptics might see this as a way for OPP brass to balance a budget that features full-time constables pulling in wages that put them on the Sunshine List (government employees earning more than $100,000 per year) and ever-increasing deVice President & Regional Publisher Mike Mount mands for state-of-the-art equipment. mmount@perfprint.ca Back in the days (say, five years ago)

Gazette Column — Is the OPP pricing themselves out of the market for policing small municipalities? Policing costs have dominated municipal council meetings for rural municipalities of late, with rising prices sending politicians and bureaucrats scurrying trying to figure out how to pay for it. For example, policing costs in South Frontenac this year will amount to almost $3 million ($2,902,091) or $288.11 per property. It wasn’t that long ago the price was under a $100 per property. And this price could go up by $40 per property every year for the next five years. (There’s no guarantee of this but c’mon, if they put a $40 per year cap into a contract, they’ll use it.) Presumably, the OPP brass know what it costs them to police a community. Whether or not this knowledge is reflected in the price they’re charging municipalities

when the OPP were providing a good service for a reasonable price, there was no incentive for municipal councils to look elsewhere for their policing services. But things have changed. Perhaps it’s time for the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus to step up efforts towards a regional police force, something like the Durham Regional Police Force. Or perhaps it’s time for municipalities like Frontenac County to start talking with the City of Kingston on the possibilities of their force making more forays into the country. Or perhaps it might be more cost effective for North and Central Frontenac to team up with Addington Highlands and Tay Valley. In the south, South Frontenac, Loyalist and Stone Mills Townships surely would have the population (and the tax assessment base) to warrant their own regional police force. Since there isn’t much chance we’d be able to convince the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing that retired guys with baseball bats and pickup trucks qualifies as ‘adequate’ policing, we’re kind of stuck with either the very expensive OPP DISTRIBUTION INQUIRIES status quo or creating sort of regional Jacquie Laviolettesome 613-221-6248 force.

Editorial – In case you didn’t know, Target is leaving Canada. The big box retailer announced that it is closing all Canadian stores after less than two years in the country. While the announcement wasn’t surprising to most people, it does leave many wondering why so many American companies can’t seem to make the transition to Canada effectively. With Target it may have been a case of too big, too soon and over expansion, or maybe it was the disappointment many of us felt when we compared the Canadian stores to those just south of the border. This comparison is where many American retailers seem to fall down and this certainly isn’t a new trend. Last year, the same scenario happened with clothing retailer J. Crew. The company opened their first location in Canada and many fans of the store were disappointed when they saw a drastic increase in prices and a lack of comparable merchandise. The same woes fell upon other companies like Aeropostale and Big Lots, which have both had unsuccessful transitions to Canada in recent years, with Big Lots taking the Target route and leaving completely and Aeropostale cutting back from 77 Canadian stores to just 10. Target faced a similar demise; their merchandise was never fully stocked, their American brands didn’t travel across the border and their prices didn’t reflect the deals that were promised. Their company tagline reads ‘Expect More. Pay Less, but that simply was never reflected in Canada. So the question remains, can an American retailer successfully transition to Canada? Companies like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue are wondering the same thing and both major retailers will find out in the coming years. While many of us may enjoy these retailers in the US, perhaps that is where they should stay. Canadians seem to be creatures of habit and for many of us that means shopping at Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, The Bay and Costco. It takes a lot to change our behaviours and while some of the American alternatives may be better, it takes a while for us to catch on. Also, with an increase in availability online is there really a need to have your favorite American brand around the corner? With the click of a few buttons many of those brands will come to your door and in the future that may just be how we shop in general. For now, though, best of luck to our future new-comers; hopefully they learn from others’ mistakes.

Job seekers take note: opportunity abounds down on the farm By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Gazette News - It’s been a pretty dismal couple of weeks for the job scene here in the Kingston area with businesses like Target and Future Shop closing, but for those wanting to work on a farm things are only looking up. “A lot of us are finding with the increased interest in local food there are more and more opportunities out there,” says farmer Emily Dowling, who owns Root Radical farm on Howe Island. “As our farms grow we’re all hiring more and more incrementally over the years, and also more farms are starting up.” Along with Megan Joslin, coowner of Patchwork Gardens in Battersea, Dowling is organizing a special local farms job fair in hopes of matching up farmers and workers; it will take place Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Wilson Room of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library (130 Johnson St.). “The opportunities on farms are out there and we’re finding there is not a large enough pool of people that know about them,” Dowling explains. So what does it take to work on a farm? “We’re looking for people who are physically able to carry things and are fine working outside in all weather,” says Joslin, noting that “it can be really, really hot and really cold and rainy. Also, people who are happy to work in a group, and if they have any sort of farm or manual labour experience that’s definitely a bonus but not necessary.” Place Place youyour ad in ad in EMC the Classifieds Classifieds

Having passion for the work is also key. “I like to work with people who have a passion for local food and ecological issues because it makes it more fun,” Dowling says. “I feel like they’re more engaged and happier working on a farm when it gets tough.” While most of the jobs offered are seasonal, usually running from around May until the end of the fall, experience on a farm can lead to a wide variety of career paths. Last year, for instance, Patchwork Gardens hired a young woman who had just graduated from university with a degree in sustainable development. “She wants to get into food advocacy, but wanted to have real experience first working on a farm,” Joslin explains. “It worked perfectly for us. She worked with us for a full season and now she’s gone on to look for other work and she has that
background.” Others are interested in eventually starting their own farms, and some are in it simply for the love of good food. “I think people who really love food get a lot out of working on farms because there’s kind of that natural reward,” Dowling says.” There’s something really amazing about planting a seed and nurturing these plants along all through the process and then getting to enjoy a big salad.” She adds that there’s also a lot of intrinsic satisfaction in caring for vegetables. “It’s so nice to finish weeding a bed or something and then you look back on it and see that what was before a total disorganized mess… is now organized and tidy and you know that those plants are going to produce great food for people.” The job fair will also include a panel discussion, at which former
some positions available for college and university students looking for summer work, running from May until the end of August. Currently, most farms involved are vegetable farms, but the event is open to all types. Farmers interested in taking part can contact Megan at meganjoslin@gmail.com. R0013120184_0205

$6 million needed for second mri at KGH done at KGH are those that require special skill sets, equipment and services such as general anesthetic for children. Those waiting for MRI scans are prioritized by need. But because of the growing demand in our region, far too often, appointments are cancelled because a more urgent patient needs to be scanned. Imagine having a child who requires MRI scans every three months to monitor brain cancer and learning that the earliest they can get in is every five months. More specialized care and better treatments are also resulting in more demand for diagnostic services such as MRI. This is particularly true with the delivery of cancer
care. Best practices for treatment (known as clinical standards of care) call for MRI in more instances for screening, diagnosis, disease staging, treatment planning and post-treatment assessment. “This is about providing people with access to the imaging care they need, when they need it,” says Karen Pearson, Director of Imaging Services for KGH and Hotel Dieu Hospital. “Not only will it help us meet wait time expectations, but most importantly, it will provide patients and their care teams with access to the information they need to get on with their treatment.”
Every person waiting for an MRI at KGH is prioritized by need relative to others waiting for a scan. The problem is, there are too many people who urgently require an MRI. A second machine will help address wait times. Photo courtesy of Matthew Manor, KGH.

Gazette News — Central Frontenac Council once again agreed to put a $15,500 line item in its draft budget this year for North Frontenac Community Services, following a presentation from acting director Maribeth Scott. “I understand costs are prohibitive everywhere,” Scott said. “So we’ve gone after quite a few grants so that we wouldn’t have to ask you for more this year.” Scott said the annual funding request is put towards “cradle to grave services” from seniors to adults to youths to children. Among the programs it offers for younger clients are: • after school programs from September to June • day camp in July and August • leadership and training programs • youth dances • trips such as Kingston Frontenacs games, museums and bowling • lifesaving and babysitting courses • movie nights • the annual Outdoor Adventure community-building event • indoor soccer for kids • after school programs • a new aboriginal focused program including lacrosse and snowshoeing Some of the adult services NFCS offers include: • family counseling, available to fami lies, couples and individuals to help them through difficult times • home help for cleaning and other day-to-day chores at a reasonable cost • transportation for seniors and those with disabilities for medical appoint ments, banking and shopping • caregiver counseling support giving assistance to those coping with the
stress of caregiving • client intervention, assistance with resolving problems/concerns that interfere with their ability to live independently • friendly visits • meals-on-wheels • diners, a monthly hot noon meal served in Ompah/Plevna, Arden, Bedford and Sharbot Lake • the day away program, which is a day of social interaction and activities for seniors who are faced with the challenging issues related to aging • adult day program, a weekly supervised day of activities for seniors who have age-related conditions which also gives caregivers a day of respite • lifeline, a 24-hour electronic monitoring service that summons help in times of emergencies • foot care, monthly visits from professionals in Snow Road, Ompah, Sharbot Lake and Plevna • in home respite, in which a personal support worker assists clients with activities of daily living and personal care as required, often providing a relief for caregivers. The agency also provides assistance and information for those who need it, which may include photocopying and faxing, good food boxes (a monthly bulk food order where fruits and vegetables can be purchased by anyone in the community for a fraction of the regular cost and support for the Food Bank. “I can support this request,” said Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell. “My kids have gone through many NFCS programs.” “I know first hand the work you do,” said Coun. Brent Cameron, who was chair of the South Frontenac Community Services board. “My hat’s off to you. R0013119122_0205

ur region is fortunate to have the best stroke care possible, but our care providers need access to the best tools to provide that care. It is very import to have access to diagnostic information, in a timely fashion. Earlier diagnoses, better treatments and improved outcomes will result from the installation of a second tertiary care MRI. As KGH’s role in providing the highest level of specialty care (such as cancer care and stroke care) has grown, access to critical equipment such as MRI, has not. The province will provide ongoing operational funding for a second machine, but the community needs to raise the $6 million needed for the purchase and installation of the equipment. The need is clear. At any given time, there are 850 people waiting for an MRI at KGH. It is where the most complex scans are completed in the region. Anyone who is well enough and can be served at a communitybased clinic is referred there. Scans that must be

Global Pet Foods wants to see your heart again this year ally worthy cause.” To reach their goal this year, Caird and her staff have come up with a number of incentives for customers to donate including draws for gift cards, bonus air miles and some other surprises too. “We don’t want to give anything away because it is a competition, but we’ve definitely come up with a lot of new perks this year.” The store will also be selling cookies and offering walk-in nail clippings for $10 or two for $15 throughout the campaign. All proceeds from both will go to the fundraiser and Caird hopes these little extras put her store over the top in terms of their goal. “We aren’t asking for the money for ourselves, we are asking for local animals and I think customers really understand that,” said Caird. “We have some very generous, loyal customers and many of them have been asking about when the campaign starts so we hope to have another successful year.” Global Pet Foods is located at 1111 Princess Street in Kingston and the ‘Show us your Heart’ campaign runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 14. Gazette Events – February is the month of love and Global Pet Foods is hoping some of that love will come their way in the form of donations from their customers. On Jan. 31, the pet food chain kicked off their 9th annual ‘Show us Your Heart’ fundraiser to benefit local shelters. Each of the 160 Global Pet Foods stores across Canada will be collecting donations until Feb. 14 and here in Kingston, manager Carla Caird is hoping for some record-breaking donations. “Last year we raised $4,700 which was a bit short of our goal, but this year we are really hoping to get to $6,000,” said Caird. “We did come in first in Ontario last year and in the top three in Canada and we hope to do that again.” Funds raised throughout the campaign go to both the Kingston and Gananoque Humane Societies and more specifically to a special fund that helps with emergency pet care. “Funds go to the Skip and Barney fund at the humane society and that fund specifically helps animals that turn up at the shelter and require medical attention,” explained Caird. “We’ve seen the fund help a lot of animals over the years and it is a re-

DAYTRIPPER
All you need is love, or not Daytripper – February 14 is fast approaching, and it brings out both the romantic and the cynic in me. The romantic says what’s not to appreciate about love? The cynic understands that it’s just another way for the corporate world to make a buck by tapping our tender feelings. Kaching. Love is about tenderness, kind words, appreciation, support, making an effort and going out of our way to do something special for someone, and wanting what’s best for the other person, even if it means doing without for yourself. None of these things, per se, has anything to do with making a purchase.
How about cooking a special meal for your partner or your best friend, or maybe for someone you know who is going through a rough time? Where did all the cupid and hearts thing start? It’s origins are lost in time. Some credit the third century Romans. Others point to Italian festivals of the Middle Ages. Yet others claim it dates to the Norse St. Galantin (pronounced Valantin), a lover of women. The Catholic Church for years celebrated the Feast Day of St. Valentine on February 14, but this tradition has been dropped. It wasn’t clear who was being honored. The options included at least three people, each with differing histories. The confusion over which person (and his origin) was being celebrated led the Catholic Church to drop St. Valentine’s Day from the calendar of feasts in 1969.

DAYTRIPPER
All you need is love, or not The first reference that can be found to a connection between Valentine’s Day and romance is credited to Geoffrey Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules (1382). By the 15th century, lovers were exchanging poems and handmade cards, often sealed with red wax. During the late 19th century, commercial cards had become popular. The color red became associated with love because it’s associated with warmth, emotion and passion. It’s the color of the heart, which, in the early days of medicine, was considered the source and centre of love and affection. We still associate love with the heart as we use terms like “sweetheart” and phrases like, “I love you with all my heart.” It would hardly be romantic to say, “I love you with all my lungs/brain/eyes/whatever.” For millennia, the rose has been considered the flower of romance. There is certainly no other flower that combines
its beauty with such a lovely scent. Remember, though, love should not be easily won. The thorns make it difficult. The rose is the first choice for lovers. A single rose hand-delivered to someone’s doorstep or mailbox is a nice touch. If you’re going to blow some serious coin, how about a romantic dinner? This city has a great proportion of fine restaurants to population. Days on Front instantly springs to the forefront as one of my first choices. But there truly are so many to choose from: Chez Piggy, Curry Original, Le Chien Noir, Olivea....the list goes on. If you don’t like crowds, celebrate before or after February 14. Add in a evening of theatre and the night is made for romance, especially if it’s theatre of the professional quality and quirky approach of Theatre Kingston’s current production: Elizabeth and Darcy, playing at The Frontenac Club Inn until. Tickets are available through the Grand Theatre box office. Always wanted to dance? Kingston
School of Dance has many classes for adults and couples that will get you moving close together in rhythm. Check out their offerings in the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. Suppose you don’t want to go out on the town for that elegant dinner. How about a movie at home? There are lots of wonderful romantic flicks. Some lovely dark ones include Chocolat (2000), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Casablanca (1942), Annie Hall (1977), About Time (2013) with Bill Nighy at his finest, and I’d even add Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) to this list. I did say dark. I even have great fondness for what are usually included in every chick-flick list of fluff: Kate and Leopold (2001) and You’ve Got Mail (1998). I’ve written about him in the past, and I’ll repeat my view here. Many people don’t like Adam Sandler because of the many, admittedly, silly roles he has played. But Adam Sandler is a brilliant actor. You only have to watch a movie
like Reign Over Me (2007) to see that. This film is a deeply painful love story. Sandler plays a former dentist whose emotional life was devastated when his wife and daughters were killed on 9/11. You know what emotional pain is after watching that movie. You also see hope, for despite the ultimate in loss, the protagonist is able to start over—deeply scarred and scared—but life does begin anew for Sandler’s character by the end of the movie. Although I classify this as a romance, you won’t likely find it in anyone’s list of romantic favorites. It’s about real love, real pain, real healing, not some fairy tale image. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies. Similarly, another movie with a 9/11 loss as the underlying source of pain is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Thomas Horn plays a young boy whose father (Tom Hanks) dies in the Twin Towers on 9/11. The boy’s grief takes him on a quest around New York City, looking for the lock that matches a key he finds
in his father’s belongings. In addition to Horn and Hanks, the stellar cast includes Sandra Bullock, John Goodman and Max von Sydow. The many moments of love in this movie put it into the romance realm as far as I’m concerned. But for both Reign Over Me and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close have tissues ready; your eyes won’t be dry by the end of either of these flicks, which makes them perfect for cuddling with someone. I have just as much appreciation for anti-Valentine’s Day, which, as far as I can determine, is for those who don’t buy into corporate greed feeding on neurotic love. Still, isn’t hugging or cuddling with someone (or thing, e.g., your dog) so much more pleasant than being anti anything? So, on February 14 will I be cuddled up with someone (or my dog) watching Titanic or Gone With the Wind? Cuddling, with or without dog: highly probable. Watching one of those movies: I think not? I do have my limits. R0013118649

ENCHANTÉ
Activism through art Enchanté – “Art,” says Barb Danielewski, “gives us a window into the internal world and allows us to express what may be more essential to the human experience than work and the day-to-day realities of feeding ourselves.” It’s been said that people who repeatedly claim to be bored are probably boring people. Barb Danielewski got bored in high school but did something to deal with it. “I was really bored in class, and I created an improv poetry zine (zeen) with friends,” she says. “We each contributed two random words to a piece of paper and challenged a person to write a poem using the random words.” From there, they used the poems and collage art to create their first zine. These are typically inexpensively produced, underground publications with small circulations, often created on photocopiers. Zines are part of the DIY (doit-yourself) philosophy that circumvents the politically manipulated and corporatecontrolled media.
“I’m not sure where I first heard about zine culture,” she says. “It’s such an interesting way of expressing a voice that we don’t often see in the mainstream media.” The creative impulse that first manifested itself in zine culture eventually brought Barb Danielewski to one of the artist studios at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. In this new arts hub setting, she works on artistic expression in many forms, from creating stickers to silkscreen. After exploring indie culture in high school, she felt the need to move further from normative culture. “Indie was still not quite rebellious enough for me,” she says. “I had to break out into the zine world. After three issues, we were getting more and more creative with our offerings. I was at Frontenac High School and there wasn’t much of an artistic culture there, so I went to KCVI, where there were a lot more freaks. We would make our own clothes and people would show up in the most bizarre outfits.” She found herself interviewing and profiling bands. By engaging artists culturally, Barb realized she was accessing worlds, like back stage, where people don’t normally go. “I sewed a lot of my own clothing
as well. We couldn’t find what we were looking for at the mall.” Then she discovered activism as a way of engaging with the world. “After that, my art became very political. I made stickers, which were something that could be accessible. I had a lot of pen pals at the time and we’d send correspondence art to each other. The correspondence art was a way for me to connect with a creative community that didn’t seem to exist in Kingston at that time. I hadn’t been exposed to diverse interests.” She started backpacking right after high school and spent four years from 1996 to 2000 on the road. “That was my university,” she says. “I also play flute, so I busked along the way.” During her travels, she learned silkscreen techniques and found that t-shirts were an ideal way to make messages visible. “It was really inspiring to me,” she says. “I could create a message about poverty or indigenous people’s rights and it didn’t have to be professionally made in the corporate world.” She came back home to Kingston for a visit and discovered that things had Barb Danielewski, left, a resident artist at the Tett Centre of Creativchanged. ity and Learning, with a participant at last year’s City of Kingston CulContinued on page 15

Activism through art Continued from page 14
“I discovered that all these things were happening here,” she says. “I got offered space in a really cool apartment that had been passed from friend to friend for 20 years.” In every corner of the apartment there was art left behind from previous inhabitants. “There were vinyl records stapled in cool patterns, posters, art filling the space. It really felt like a part of the history of Kingston in there. It felt like I was part of something important to Kingston.” She started to work as a bike mechanic at Yellow Bike Action, a community bike shop. But she still had the restless travel bug nagging at her, so she headed to Europe a couple of times, stayed in a lot of squats and immersed herself in DIY artistic culture. “I decided that when I came back [to Kingston] I would shift gears. I changed from bike mechanic to screen printing. I started screen printing to promote bike culture in Kingston.” She created patches from scraps
of fabric. “It’s a big part of youth culture,” she says. “You sew them on to show where you’ve been and who you are. You can’t just buy them in a store. They’re a secret portal to these other worlds. So I started screen printing patches and sharing them with all my friends in Kingston.” She moved from patches to printing on t-shirts she found in second hand thrift stores. “It’s really important to me to print on second hand material rather than contribute to the sweat shop culture.” But she felt that t-shirt work became confining. “Every single one looked the same,” she says. “So I started printing on different materials, shirts, sweaters, jackets. I wanted to see how far I could push the limits of screen printing.” Then came an item of clothing that was about as incongruous with creative culture as can be imagined: the necktie. “I’d found something that was not only interesting to print on, but screen printing on neckties subverts
the very purpose of the necktie, to conform.” Yale Law School professor (in several stints/time frames) and social critic Charles Reich has noted that the necktie is symbolic of the human male cutting off mind from body in an attempt to deny the emotional aspect of the self, in essence, strangling feelings. Barb has taken screen printing into schools as an artist in residence. “I like to teach kids how to tie a necktie, starting out with a standard knot,” she says. “I actively encourage them to make mistakes and to try tying them in a creative way. We come out with ties used as belts, headbands, ties and scarves. Some are tied with three different knots. The kids get totally outside the box and become really creative.” Barb had lived in her apartment downtown for 12 years. She felt connected to a vibrant artistic community. But the building was recently purchased by a developer (probably wearing a necktie) who is turning the space into high end lofts. “I had to move out,” says Barb.
“I found myself really missing that connection to the arts community in my home studio. I feel like it’s really become a big part of my identity to inspire people and show them that everyone can be creative and anyone can screen print and bring creativity into their lives. I feel like the Tett Centre has the power to do that. “Here, the City is saying, ‘We believe in the arts enough that we’re going to explore.’ All the artists here say, ‘We believe in the community and want to engage with people.’ It’s part of the mandate of what we’re supposed to do. We’ve been asked to engage with the community. That really is life blood for me. It feeds me.” She sees opportunities throughout the Tett that haven’t existed elsewhere, such as big workshop spaces and wheelchair accessibility throughout the building. “It’s inspiring being in this beautiful building with exposed limestone walls and a stunning view of the lake,” she says. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to work in this atmosphere.” She believes we all have stories
to tell and a desire to be heard. “Here at the Tett we see a whole spectrum of ways we can tell our stories with sound, photography and other visual arts, writing and dance. We can witness our stories and engage audiences in ways that aren’t traditional. A lot of the ways we are exploring through artistic collaboration is really cutting edge in the arts community. It feels like what’s being curated into this space are a lot of community connections and a willingness to hear each other’s stories in ways we’ve never heard them before.” You can find Barb Danielewski in Studio 214D at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. A fun evening of masquerading for the United Way By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – Costume parties aren’t just for kids; adults can dress up, wear masks and have a good time too. That’s exactly what the Next Gen Masquerade is all about. The United Way fundraiser is now in its third year and the excitement for the event seems to grow with each year. “The response has been really positive,” said Erin Nolan, cochair for the annual event and Next Gen-er. “The fact that we live in Canada and February is not so great in terms of weather and everyone hibernates. I think really works for this event in terms of timing. People are looking for something fun to do that gets them out of the house.” The event is put on by Next Gen, a group of volunteers in their twenties and thirties that want to
bring meaningful change to the community through involvement in the United Way. Planned events are geared towards young professionals ages 25 to 40 and the annual Masquerade was planned with that demographic in mind. “The event really gives people an excuse to dress up and spend some time looking nice with their friends and significant others,” said Nolan. “Usually those types of events are weddings or corporate parties and this is something totally different. I think people really enjoy that aspect of it.” The masquerade is an elaborate cocktail party that includes appetizers, a cash bar, a DJ, dressy attire and of course masks. Nolan was worried that the masquerade aspect would be too much at first, but participants loved it right from the start. “The first year we held the event we were really worried that
people wouldn’t dress up and they would think it was dumb, but people were amazing and so enthusiastic. Everyone played along and had a great time and we were so happy to see that.” The masquerade has even helped generate mask sales throughout the city and inspired some participants to get creative. “We have a lot of people who put a lot of effort into finding a unique mask and many people are even buying them months in ad-
vance too,” said Nolan. “We are also seeing a lot of people making masks themselves, which is pretty cool. It gives people an outlet to express their individuality and some of the masks are so elaborate and beautiful. It really adds to the event.” Above all the event is a fundraiser for the United Way and Nolan thinks that is what attracts so many of the participants year after year. “We are seeing so many indi-
viduals participate who really do want to give back to their community. The funds raised go back into the local community. People want to help and this is a great way to do that.” Tickets for the Next Gen Masquerade at $30 in advance and $35 at the door and are available online at www.nextgenmasq.ca or by calling 613-546-4291. The event takes place on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Renaissance Event Venue.

STANDING IN OUR FIELD
Poverty and a food price crisis Columnist
Now that we’ve rung in 2015, we can expect a higher total when our groceries are rung up at the store. According to the Food Institute at the University of Guelph, food prices in 2014 increased by 2.8%. Meat prices increased the most, with a jump of 12.4%. The Food Institute predicts that in 2015 food prices will continue to rise faster than inflation. Low-income people are most by affected these increases. That’s a very large group including people on employment insurance, Ontario Works, or disability support, as well as underemployed and minimum wage workers, and students and retired people living on fixed incomes. To learn more I sat down with Tara Kainer, who works on food security issues in the social justice office of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul. She explained that food prices are not the biggest factor in food insecurity: “As long as housing costs are so astronomically high, people just don’t have any room in their budget. You have to pay your rent or you’re out on the street. You have to pay your mortgage or you’re going to lose your house. Those things are not very negotiable.” Whereas people can and do try to save money by spending less on food, which usually means buying less healthy and lower quality food, or simply buying less and skipping meals. And a lot of people are in that boat; a 2012 multi-university study on food insecurity found that 4 million Canadians including 1.15 million children “lived in households that struggled to afford the food they needed in 2012.” I asked Kainer if she expected to see changes in demand for food banks and meal programs because of rising food prices, and she told me that an increase in numbers was already apparent at food providers in Kingston. Senior citizens—who often have fixed incomes—have already increased their use. But students are
the fastest growing group of users, along with children. A 2014 report from the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) found the number of households using food banks had jumped by 20% since 2013. That’s a sign of a widening food insecurity crisis. Some pundits argue—regardless of perpetually increasing costs for housing and food—that low income people simply need to budget better. Kainer dismisses this idea. “They do not need to learn how to budget. They budget better than any of us do because they have so little money. They make their dollars stretch.” Ultimately one of the biggest impacts of food insecurity is poor health. People who can’t afford healthy food and a diverse diet are prone to chronic health problems. To cut back on social assistance, Kainer explains, “is not helping anyone. To have poor, vulnerable, ill-fed people in our society, who will end up with all kinds of difficulties, especially health ones, makes us all weaker as a society and all worse off.” A report from the Ontario Association of Food Banks found that in 2007 Canada spent $7.6 billion additional health care dollars because of poverty, and the price of food has increased dramatically since then. So society does end up paying for food insecurity, but it does so especially through the health care system. People develop chronic illnesses which are expensive to treat, instead of having preventative access to healthy food. It’s a tragic irony; in a supposed attempt to save money, Canadian society spends far more money on health care and other services, while causing needless deprivation and suffering for millions of people. And that deprivation, the research is clear, falls disproportionately on people of colour and indigenous people, single-parent families, and children. As for solutions, Kainer points to that 2012 multi-university study which suggests an increase in the minimum wage, good jobs, higher rates of social assistance, affordable housing, a national day care
plan, and a basic income guarantee. Kainer is optimistic about the growing movement for a guaranteed minimum income. “As usual,
politicians have to be pushed to implement these kinds of programs. And poverty is the result of social policy.” Aric McBay is a farmer and au-

about memories for both of us of a piece of coal which was brought into the house by the first visitor, to ensure good luck for the coming year. And so it goes...memories written, and memories shared. And then there are those loyal readers whose mission in life is to keep me on my toes. One such reader sends me letters, which are a joy to read, even though they might be a reprimand for a breach of good grammar, or a word misspelled. He is always a gentleman and a true scholar, and I want him to know every letter he writes I take very seriously, and try, but don’t always succeed in living up to his very high standards. It is very gratifying to me to know that the column is often recycled and sent off to far away places, which in turn brings me mail from places I have never heard of, and introduces me to people who become friends. Two come to mind: A gentleman from Kitchener writes long, wonderful letters, describing in detail, his life, his home, his activities and his mission in life. His letter is wrapped around packets of imported teas as a token of appreciation for the joy he says the column brings him. One of the most cherished readers the column has elicited, is a young man, still in his early teens, who had his father drive him all the way from his home in the Upper Ottawa Valley to meet me. What an honour that was for me! It is heartwarming indeed to know that my simple stories appeal to people of all ages, and this young man proves to me that memories told, hold no boundaries and appeal to people of all ages. Just a few days ago I was sent a picture of a very young girl, curled up on a couch, reading a Mary Cook story! And so I go into another year with gratitude and with hope. I am truly grateful to this paper for giving me the privilege of telling my stories. I am indebted to those loyal readers who take the time to send their feedback. I appreciate that the families left, of those who have passed on, have given me permission to continue to include their loved ones in my stories. Every letter, every e-mail is cherished, and all are answered. Although I often have to rely on e-mail if an address is lacking, I am an inveterate letter writer, and I am sure one of Canada Post’s best customers! And so it is with heartfelt gratitude to you, devoted readers, who are the real heroes of my stories, that I give my thanks. Without you, there would be no reason to write of my memories of that special time in my life. And of course, for this paper for giving me a venue, I offer my appreciation. May 2015 be a time when you too will want to make note of those times in the year, which were special to you, and may you remember those people who will have touched your days in a meaningful way, so that they too will become cherished memories, and become part of the fabric in your own book of life. SINCE
Gazette Lifestyle - The beginning of a new year, for most of us, is a time to reflect on the year that has just past. As a writer, I look back at many columns I should have done differently, and there are one or two which would have been better had they never seen the light of day. However, there is little that can be done about either case at this late date. What I can do, with the gracious consent of my long suffering editor, is tell my readers a few of the things that continue to make my work both challenging and gratifying, and certainly interesting. Perhaps in doing so, I can enlighten those who have asked questions, given me advice, and shared with me, their own stories over the year. There were columns, some more than others, which elicited questions from readers on those people I write about. Are they real? Did they ever exist? Where are they now? Sometimes, to protect the innocent, I create a fictitious name, but the people I write about, did indeed exist in my early life, and the episode, did in fact happen. For instance, bad Marguerite (and I’m not stupid enough to call her by her right name) is really a compilation of all the bad little girls I went to school with over the years, and the episodes happened at various times and in various places, but were in fact, actual. Was there really a Velma, Joyce, Cecil, and a Miss Crosby? What about my rich Uncle Lou? Or my three brothers and my beloved sister Audrey? Was there an Aunt Lizzie who regularly augmented our meager wardrobes with a hand-me-down box from Regina? And what about my mischievous cousin Ronny? Where are these people now? Every one of the aforementioned were very much a part of my growing up on the farm at Northcote, and very, very real indeed. But sadly, all have passed on, the most recent being my dear friend Joyce just a few months ago. Let me highlight just one other. Uncle Lou, my mother’s brother, was indeed her rich brother from New York City. Long before he married and had children of his own, he gave us much joy and bestowed on my mother countless good deeds to make her life easier on that farm in Renfrew County. If you still wonder if he did exist, you can ask his daughter Mary Lou Walker, who lives outside of Perth, and she will attest to the honesty of the stories, and my depiction of an uncle, her father, who brought so much joy to our lives during those Depression years. I am forever grateful to those readers who can add another dimension to a story I have written.
