Council votes to end $25 fee for not hooking up to Sydenham water system By Craig Bakay Reporter

Water fun day for Loughborough Public School Firefighters from South Frontenac Fire and Rescue continued a long standing tradition on June 17 with their Water Fun Day at McLellan Field in Sydenham for students at Loughborough Public School. The ever popular slip and slides returned for another year to the delight of the children. News — The $25 fee for not hooking up to Sydenham Water is no more. At its regular meeting last week in Sydenham, South Frontenac Council voted 5-4 to do away with the controversial fee, which some have referred to as a ‘penalty.’ Coun. Ross Sutherland, Alan Revill, Norm Roberts, Mark Schjerning and Ron Sleeth voted to end the fee. Sutherland led the charge, issuing a notice of motion to force a vote on the issue. “Everyone who fronts on the Sydenham water system, whether they use the system or not, pays the same basic monthly fee, Sutherland said. “All the residents that are not connected pay $58.88 a month, or $706.56 a year, the same as those that use the system. “On top of this cost, the non-usage residents pay a further $25 a month for a total of $83.88 per month or 1006.56 a year. “I support this motion, said Coun. Mark Schjerning. “The penalty has left a bad taste in many mouths. “My concern is that some people are not hooking up because of low income, said Coun. Pat Barr. “There were debentures and loans available at that time, said CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr. “There were a limited number of exemptions where hookup was not possible. Sutherland said the $25 charge wasn’t enough of

an incentive for people to hook up but Mayor Ron Vandewal disagreed. “Don’t call it a penalty, call it an incentive, Vandewal said. “Since we put it in place, we’ve had the biggest hookup since the original one (16 residences). That wasn’t all Sutherland and the Mayor disagreed on. Sutherland once again floated the idea that all of South Frontenac should be paying for the Sydenham water system. “We all pay for libraries but we don’t all use them, Sutherland said. “And, I’m not sure what our legal liabilities are. “But we can’t stop people from drinking from their own well any more than we could stop them from drinking from the lake or a mud puddle for that matter. “Don’t tell me all of South Frontenac should be paying for it, said Vandewal. “They have in some ways (such as resources being diverted that might be directed elsewhere). And Vandewal had another objection. “I think you might just be opening up something you’d rather not, he said. “It’s been the same issue for the past four elections. Sutherland replied that he really wasn’t trying to add that to his motion, saying that he was trying to end something he considered was “dividing the community, dividing the Council and making matters worse. “I think this is a very simple motion, Sutherland said. “It’s just about the $25 fee. “That’s what I heard at the doors (during the election campaign).

Pan Am fever hits Kingston By Hollie Pratt-Campbell Events - This summer’s Pan Am Games may be taking place a few hundred kilometres down the 401 in Toronto, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty to get excited about here in Kingston. The Fort Henry Pan Am Cultural Festival, a free, four-day event celebrating community, sport and the cultures of the 41 Pan American countries, will take place July 1 – 4 at the fort. It is the only Pan Am festival of its kind east of the Greater Toronto Area, and one of two Pan Am events (the other is in Niagara) to be held anywhere outside of the GTA. “It’s TM

a great opportunity for people from even Ottawa or Montreal to come in and really get a sense of that Pan Am fever, says festival producer Tricia Knowles. The festival was made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, which is allowing Fort Henry to run all of the programming – including regularly scheduled events like the Sunset Ceremonies – free of charge. Performers include celebrated Canadian singer/songwriter Jully Black, Cuban artist Alex Cuba, contemporary AfricanCaribbean dance company Ballet Creole, Iqaluit band the Jerry Cans and many more. “Our performers come from all over and while we don’t have every single one of the 41 countries represented, we were careful to ensure there is representation from all the different areas, says Knowles, adding that she hopes the festival will contribute to a greater understanding of different cultures within the community. “This is an opportunity for people to come and not just view entertainment, but also have that experience within it. If we bring more non-mainstream groups into the centre of a large civic activity, it has an opportunity to expand people’s horizons.

Naturally, there will also be a sport element to the festival, with interactive demonstrations of trampoline, gymnastics, martial arts and more taking place in the “Pachi Pitâ€?, named for the Pan Am Games’ porcupine mascot. Guests will have an RSSRUWXQLW\ WR WU\ WKHLU KDQG DW HYHU\WKLQJ IURP VKRRWLQJ D ULĂ€H to “skittlesâ€?, an ancient form of lawn bowling resurrected by Fort Henry as a nod to both the historical nature of the venue and the sporting spirit of the event. “That’ll be really interesting for people to see, especially if they have any sort of passion for history and cultural tourism,â€? Knowles remarks.

The “Rhythm Zoneâ€? and the “Sunshine Tentâ€? will hold further interactive activities for children and adults, and music will be performed on the “Marigold Stageâ€? and the “Hummingbird Stageâ€? Knowles explains that the goal was to name the various tents after cultural elements of the Americas. “When you look at cultures, they’re [represented by] WKH Ă€RZHUV WKH DQLPDOV WKH ELUGV WKH PXVLF 6R ZH have the land animal attributed to the Pan Am Games, WKH VXQ WKH Ă€RZHUV WKH KXPPLQJELUG 'LIIHUHQW HOHments from a lot of the Pan Am countries have been brought into the site.â€? Special Canadian and American-themed Sunset Ceremonies will be held on the countries’ respective birthdays, July 1 and 4. “Both of those are totally free so if people have never seen a Sunset Ceremony this is an opportunity,â€? says Knowles. On July 2, the Pan Am Torch Relay will come through the fort. “The torch relay is going to be amazing – like a festival within a festival,â€? notes Knowles, adding that “the collaboration that we’ve seen between all of the partners in Kingston [who are making this possible] shows how this whole thing really is about culture, community and sport.â€? There are a few exceptions such as clean plant pots, cells and trays. As well, please do not put excess plastic items in plastic bags, it is hard to differentiate between that and your garbage, also the workers then have no place to deposit the bag. Lingen, Stewart, Cameron South Frontenac’s Volunteers of the Year By Craig Bakay Reporter

News — South Frontenac Township honoured its Volunteers of the Year last week before Council’s regular meeting in Sydenham. Coun. Ross Sutherland introduced Joan Cameron, chair of South Frontenac Community Services (SFCS). Cameron, who joined the SFCS board in 2009, was instrumental in the establishment of the Grace Centre. “Upon acquiring the Grace Centre location, Joan physically cleaned every nook and cranny of the building, cleaning out cupboards, painting, working with contractors to complete tasks on schedule, her citation read.

“She also coordinated getting the old bell from the church refinished in order to preserve the heritage of the building. She has also helped increase the reach of SFCS to 816 seniors and 260 low income families from 525 seniors and 40 low income families, and was instrumental in the launch of the Food Bank, Hot Meals on Wheels program and the expansion of Adult Day Services to five days a week. She has also chaired a Local Health Integration Network, collaborated with the Southeast Governance Committee and is involved with a breast cancer survivor group. “When I retired, a friend told me ‘you’re going to be bored unless you

find something to do — volunteer, it will keep your mind active,’ she said. Coun. Bill Robinson introduced Debbie Lingen, who moved to Verona with her husband Roy in 2006 and promptly joined the Verona Community Association, eventually becoming president, a position she currently holds. She is also currently the chair of the Verona Cattail Festival and spearheaded Christmas in the Village, which replaced the annual TreeLighting Ceremony. “I’m honoured to get this award, she said. “The reason I’m doing all this is the wonderful support we have here in the community.

“The volunteers make my job easy. Dep. Mayor John McDougall introduced Barbara Stewart, the president of and driving force behind the Portland District & Area Heritage Society as it prepares to transform the ‘Old School’ in Hartington into The South Frontenac Museum. Also, she continues to be a volunteer with the Verona Cattail Festival (20 years), the Verona Garlic Festival and Harrowsmith Canada Day celebrations. “I’m very pleased to be opening

the museum Aug. 15, she said, never missing an opportunity to plug the project. “There’s still some work to be done but the Township has been very good to us. The recipients each received a plaque, a citation and their names will be added to the wall in the Council Chambers, bringing the total honorees to 59. Organizer Mike Howe said there is a call for nominations in January/February of each year. Potential recipients must be residents and be nominated by 12 people.

Pamper your pooch at The Barkitorium By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

News – Swimming is a sport known for its low impact on joints and muscles, varying levels of intensity and positive impacts on health; while all of these aspects are beneficial to humans, they are also beneficial to dogs. Rick Baggs became aware of these canine benefits after watching a segment on Breakfast Television a few years ago on hydrotherapy for dogs. After trying out the techniques

on his own dog, Jazz, and learning more he and his wife opened the Barkitorium. “I have always loved working with dogs and was interested in learning more about them so this was perfect,” said Baggs, a former military radar technician and electronics teacher. “We started off small, but now we offer a wide range of services.” Baggs took a hydrotherapy course in Ottawa before starting to treat dogs and he focuses on dogs that have recently had surgery, experi-

enced an injury or are simply dealing with aging joints. “We focus in on specific areas in hydrotherapy,” said Baggs. “If a dog needs to work their back legs we use little booties on them to make them more aware of their feet and then they move them more in the water. The dogs learn very quickly.” While hydrotherapy is the main focus of the business, Baggs also allows owners to come swim with their dogs for exercise. “We offer the U-swim sessions and it is a great way to exercise R E CLINE, R E LAX &

your dog,” he said. “Ten minutes of swimming is equivalent to about half an hour of running for a dog so it can be quite effective.” Both the hydrotherapy and the swims take place in a 17-foot hydro pool filled with warm, salty water that is gentle on the fur and skin of most dogs. The Barkitorium also has a shower for dogs after they swim to rinse off and bathe if necessary and Baggs also offers doggy day care at the facility. “We knew that we would have to offer a variety of services so the day care made sense,” he said. “I enjoy spending time with the dogs and I learn new things about their behaviour every day.” Learning about the dogs has been a highlight for Baggs in this venture and he enjoys seeing how they progress throughout the hydrotherapy process. “It is amazing to see the improvement in the way they walk and their overall health,” he said. “They take a bit to get into it at first, but then they love it. We have some dogs that

get so excited and can’t wait to get into the pool.” Baggs has built a healthy client base so far, but he’d like to see more hydrotherapy business. He is interested in working with veterinarians in the area and really getting the word out there about the benefits of the process. “We have dropped off brochures and information and we’d really like to work with them more,” he said. “We are a home based business so there isn’t a lot of walk in traffic, but we are trying to get the word out.” To help spread the word, The Barkitorium is holding an open house on June 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. Baggs is encouraging dog lovers, veterinarians and anyone interested in the services to stop by. “We want the community to come see what we have to offer. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised.” The Barkitorium is located at 2465 Perth Road in Glenburnie. For more information about services and pricing visit www.thebarkitorium.com

EDITORIAL

In Our Opinion

This ‘carding’ crap by police officers simply has to stop Craig Bakay Reporter

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Column — This ‘carding’ (aka ‘street checks) thing whereby police officers stop people at random on the streets is a very disturbing practice. First of all, it’s a violation of a citizen’s rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which protects against unreasonable search as well as unlawful detention. Now police officials seek to defend the practice of stopping people on the street and asking for identification (along with other questions most often) as a valuable investigative technique that advances pro-active law enforcement. So would locking up anybody they suspect of committing a crime but we don’t allow that without having a bunch of evidence to support the action. Theoretically, they will argue that there’s nothing that prevents

them from stopping someone to ask them questions. After all, journalists do it all the time. However, there’s a big difference between me going up to someone and saying “what’s happening and a cop going up to someone and asking for identification. For one thing, someone wearing a uniform, badge and gun is a pretty intimidating sight. If it weren’t they wouldn’t be wearing them in the first place. And the irony of it is that nobody is obligated to answer a police officer’s questions in these situations, or even acknowledge their existence for that matter. But, most teenagers and even 20somethings don’t know this. In fact, there doesn’t even seem to be any law against telling them to go jump in the lake for that matter. However, when you’re feeling intimidated, chances are you’re not at your best and probably feeling that you have no choice but to answer. And don’t think the police officials don’t know this. What this amounts to is abuse of authority.

Kanata Kourier-Standard

Kanata Kourier-Standard Arnprior Chronicle-Guide

The Law Union of Ontario, a group of lawyers, law students and legal professionals, says “the approaching and stopping of persons without lawful cause followed by a request or demand for identification and answers to the information sought by Form 208 clearly constitute ‘detention’ within the meaning of the Charter of Rights. Such demands or requests for identification and information clearly constitute a ‘search’ within the meaning of the Charter. Do the officials who advocate carding really disagree with this? Perhaps it’s time to start charging some the rank and file who are required to perform this task with violating citizen’s charter rights and see how long it takes the powerful police unions to demand an end to it. Or better yet, pass a law requiring any carding stop to be supported by a 10-page, hand-written report in triplicate. That would probably put a stop to it pretty quickly. The bottom line here is that this practice probably doesn’t lead to the solving (or prevention) of many crimes but even if it did, it’s just plain wrong.

Shocking murder of teenager over smartphone contains sobering lessons

Editorial – It’s hard not to get sinking feeling when you think of the

18 year old London man who was shot dead June 14 in what appears to have been an attempt to retrieve a missing smartphone. Most of us can readily identify with the feeling of being without that most quintessential piece of modern technology – the one that connects us in a very visceral way to all the lives we lead, the device that stores our contacts and memories, and assists us in most aspects of everyday life, and we sympathize with a near-compulsive desire to recover it. Jeremy Cook left his iPhone in a taxi that night, but with the use of an embedded GPS tracking device, he was able to track it down to a specific address in the early hours of Sunday morning. A witness says that as he attempted to converse with three individuals inside a vehicle and was shot multiple times before the vehicle sped off. The phone was later tossed aside a few blocks away, close to the suspects’ abandoned vehicle. To be certain, this is a crime that contains multiple elements of criminality including theft and illegal firearms; however, experts say that it all may have been avoided had it been resolved to let the phone go for the night. By all means use the available phone-finder apps, and if they indicate it is in a readily accessible and safe place such as a store or a restaurant, seek it out. However, police say that the most prudent course of action once you realize your phone is gone is to call your service provider, deactivate it and report the theft to police. Now, they may not treat your missing phone as a priority, and indeed it’s possible you may never see it again, but at least you can sleep soundly knowing that you’ve taken the proper course of action. Leave the thief-management to the authorities; no device is worth the risk. Police say that if you want to deter thieves, you can create an access code and note down the phone’s unique IMEI number, which can then be used by authorities to prevent it from being reactivated. We hope that the perpetrators of this horrific crime are apprehended and brought to justice. There can be no tolerance for the kind of behaviours that would see a man shot repeatedly over an easily replaceable piece of technology, and they deserve the strongest sentences that the courts can mete out. Still, each one of us must remember to exercise caution and common sense. Psychopathy, criminality and depravity are alive and well in our cities, and while day-to-day risks are undoubtedly small, we still need to be prudent and manage them to the best of our abilities.

Frontenac County Council adopts new budget policy as guideline for staff Reporter

News — A new budget policy adopted by Frontenac County Council at its regular meeting last week in Marysville is just a “guideline to staff when preparing budgets, said CAO Kelly Pender. “As with any policy, Council can make a decision (to change it), he said. Under the new policy, staff will prepare each year’s budget with an increase in the taxation levy based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index as calculated in August of the year prior to the budget. “The rate used for projections will be the Bank of Canada’s target inflation rate, where appropriate, understanding that there are some areas of the municipal budget com-

posed of items that may fluctuate above or below the CPI, said Treasurer Marion VanBruinessen in her report. “The predictability of levy increase and budget timing will facilitate long range financial planning and operational efficiency. Pender said the policy came from a KPMG study the County commissioned. “They suggested a slow and steady approach (but) we’re not going to apply inflation to everything. He said regardless, the option to change staff’s budget recommendations will always lie with Council. “For example, say we wanted to budget for 100 metres of sidewalk and the price goes up significantly, he said. “Council could then decide to only put in 90 metres of sidewalk or to change the budget.

Also part of the budget policy is an “additional 0.65 per cent tax for the 10-year period from 2015 to 2024 which is a “requirement of public sector accounting to be applied to the capital sustainability of the assets of the County. “This amount will be reviewed annually and presented to Council at the time of the budget, the report said. “The County will not be a slave to replacement schedules, rather will maintain accurate maintenance logs and condition assessment to ensure that replacement decisions are made at the most appropriate time. Pender said Frontenac County’s number of 0.65 per cent is lower than most municipalities. “Kingston, for example, is 1.00 per cent, he said. “But ours is lower because we don’t own any roads

2 for 1

or bridges. “The majority of our assets are buildings.â€? ••• A resolution to pay $1,000 to join the Community Schools Alliance didn’t sit well with Coun. Ron Vandewal. The Community Schools Alliance is an advocacy group working towards a closer working relationship between school boards and municipal councils, said Warden Denis Doyle, who proposed joining. “I don’t agree with this,â€? said Vandewal. “We’ve never been approached by the school board but if they want to come and talk to our council, they can come any time they want to.â€? Doyle said he was concerned about rural school closure and this group wants to hire some profes-

sionals to write reports that would support their cause. “I’m suggesting that this funding come from the ($2,500) Warden’s Discretionary Fund, Doyle said. “I haven’t spent any of it yet.

Council denies industrial zoning change request in Harrowsmith Reporter

News — A rezoning application that would have allowed additional industrial land in the hamlet of Harrowsmith was denied at South Frontenac Council’s regular meeting last week in Sydenham. Only Coun. Bill Robinson voted in favour of the rezoning. The application, by Larcon Farms, came before Council in a public meeting April 21. The application proposed enlarging an urban industrial lot adding 1 hectare (2.6 acres) to an existing industrial lot of about 1.3 hectares (3 acres) in size. The additional land is zoned residential, hence the application for zoning change. The lots in question are bounded by Wilton Road, Road 38, Colebrooke Road and Wallace Road. There is a mini-storage operation on the currently zoned industrial land, which the applicant said a potential purchaser wanted to expand. Planner/Dep. Clerk Lindsay Mills recommended approval in his report. “The land is in a settlement area and the Official Plan states that the long-term vision for these areas is to provide an opportunity for a varied and balanced industrial/commercial base,” he said. “Thus, the expansion of the use on the land appears to be supported by the policies of the Official Plan. “It should be noted that the list of permitted uses in the Urban Industrial Zone are limited to uses that are relatively benign and compatible with other uses in urban areas.” Mills did add that there are “some extensive storm water management

issues” from a deep depression in the land and recommended a ‘hold’ symbol be placed on the application until such time as those issues are resolved. However, at the first public meeting, neighbouring residents voiced their concerns about potential future uses and possibly lower property values that might result and that seemed to resonate with Council. “Residential lots are encouraged in the hamlets, it’s our life,” said Dep. Mayor John McDougall. “Residents knew about the storage units but should not be subjected to unknown industrial uses. “And how do we permit this zoning change at the hub of the K & P and Cataraqui Trails? “In my opinion, this is too open and should not be approved.”

“I looked at Google Maps and one thing that struck me is the extent of residential uses there,” said Coun. Alan Revill. “This is incompatible. “Buffering could make some things compatible but the variety of potential uses makes this unsupportable.” “You throw in the word ‘industrial’ and everybody gets excited,” said Mayor Ron Vandewal. “There are plenty of industrial uses surrounded by $500,000 homes in South Frontenac such as Kitchens by Craig in Storrington. “I’d like to see the list of allowable uses down to about three, all passive industrial uses.” “My concern is that all the agencies (Health Unit, conservation authority) are for it,” said Robinson. “And our planner agrees with it.”

Pan Am ambassador Jully Black embraces ‘Panamania’ mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

News – With the Pan Am Games quickly approaching, excitement continues to build across the country – perhaps especially for the ambassa-

dors for the games. “It has been amazing to be a part of the fabric of ‘Panamania’,” said Jully Black, accomplished Canadian R&B singer and ambassador for the games. “I was interested in being a part of the games immediately, even if it was just

as a torchbearer. The event is so important and monumental.” Black became an ambassador after singing the national anthem at a Toronto Argonauts game last year. The game was a special Pan Am evening and athletes and organizers flooded

the stadium. “I met some people and I put my interest out there and it came together pretty seamlessly,” she said. “It all fell into place and I was so happy to be part of it all.” As an ambassador, Black isn’t being held to any strict guidelines; she is simply expected to spread the word about the games and promote Toronto wherever she goes. “I am expected to be myself and promote how awesome and culturally diverse Canada is,” she said. “It is amazing being able to utilize my media experience to do interviews, co-host gigs and just promote the city. It has been a lot of fun.” Black is even happier to be part of the Para Pan Am Games as they have extra personal meaning – her sister MJ was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that affects the muscles and prevents them from fully developing. In MJ’s case, the muscles in her legs never fully developed, but that didn’t stop her from participating in sports and regular activities. “Growing up and even to this day I never notice her difference,” said Black. “I watched her be an athlete growing up and she played wheelchair basketball, she swam laps with me on her back and she didn’t have the use of her feet, it was all upper body strength.” Black looks forward to seeing the Para Pan Am Games and having her sister alongside her for them. “She isn’t an athlete anymore, but she is an athlete at heart,” she said. “It will be really special.” As part of the lead up to the games in mid-July, Black will also be per-

forming in cities across Ontario as part of torchbearer ceremonies and Pan Am celebrations. On July 2, she will make a stop in Kingston and perform at Fort Henry as part of the Pan Am Cultural Festival. Black is looking forward to the concert and returning to the city. “I visited Kingston many years ago with a youth outreach group. We brought our theatre production and live music to the Kingston Penitentiary,” she said. “The experience was very different, but also profound. It was great to see how music and theatre can have such a positive impact and lift spirits.” This time around, Black will be performing with a variety of other artists including Alex Cuba, Quique Escamilla, Bombolesse and many more. “I am really looking forward to it,” she said. “This experience is so great for all of the artists involved, myself included, and we are getting an opportunity to play a lot of shows on multiple stages throughout this lead up.” While the craziness and ‘Panamania’ won’t be stopping anytime soon, Black is relaxed and ready to take it all in and she encourages others to do the same. “A lot of people are preparing for the city to be crazy and busy and I am encouraging people to soak it in,” she said. “It is a one-time thing and even if you aren’t directly in the city it is still exciting and it really is something for all of Canada to celebrate.” Jully Black will perform at Fort Henry on July 2 at 8 p.m. for more information and a full lineup of events visit http://www.forthenry.com/ events/pan-am-cultural-festival/

It’s not news that today’s automotive technology is far more advanced than the technology of yester-decade. The services required to keep today’s modern engines humming are also far more advanced. Having a technician inspect your vehicle before embarking upon a road trip could very well ensure your holiday remains heavenly rather than hellacious. There are various components under the hood and beyond that should be inspected. For starters, make certain to have a general inspection done of the entire vehicle, including the ignition system, tires, and brakes. Also make sure the fluid services are addressed. This is also a good time to replace any worn hoses and drive belts. Few motorists overlook having their engine oil and filter changed. But many neglect to change their other fluids. Brake fluid flushes are important because the fluid can become contaminated and not compress properly over time. Transmission fluid is also important because, much like engine oil, it is designed to keep the inner workings of the transmission lubricated. It breaks down over time, thereby leaving your transmission vulnerable to overheating and failure. If your fluids don’t need to be changed, then ensure they are topped up before heading out.

The good news is that tune-ups are not needed nearly as often on today’s modern car as they were on carbureted vehicles. While adjustments were once required at least twice yearly, most vehicles only require a minor tune-up once a year. A major tune-up is required every couple of years, depending on how many kilometers you drive yearly. Your technician will be checking things like spark plugs, ignition wires, filters, and timing. Spark plugs and ignition wires are responsible or carrying electricity from the ignition coil to the cylinder. When worn, these parts must be replaces. Wires break down over time, causing electricity to escape.

Most manufacturers now claim that you can drive for 160,000 km before requiring new spark plugs. But other ignition components should be replaced prior to that, including ignition wires, the PCV valve, and the fuel filter. Be sure to check your owner’s manual. Most vehicles have a fuel filter that needs to be replaced. This is a great time for the fuel injection to be flushed of any carbon particles that may damage or clog the fuel injectors and rail. Fuel injectors work by spraying a fine mist of fuel into the combustion chamber, and can easily become clogged or damaged by carbon. Carbon can gradually build within the engine causing a host of problems. A fuel injection service will flush this carbon from the engine, eliminating potential blockages. Nobody wants to spend a single minute of their holidays stranded at a repair centre. Preparing for the worst before you leave will minimize the likelihood of your summer turning into a bummer.

From “Froid’Art” to “Jardin’Art” love that it pushes you out of your comfort zone and makes you look at art differently. As with any new endeavour, it can be frustrating at times, but we all somehow managed to tackle the limitations of the mediums we use with such varied and beautiful results. Kallay embraced the challenges that her artwork would be thrown upon her by Mother Nature. “It was difficult to find paints that would hold up and once we did that, getting good opaque coverage was difficult. The other problem was having the imagery be visible from both sides. We would have to plan out our designs fairly precisely as layering the paint would prevent it from being viewed on both sides. I am still waiting to see if the silicone is going to stick well enough to my frame to keep it sealed. Time will tell.” “It was fun though, and I am amazed at how wonderful everyone’s work turned out given the obstacles faced with the mediums,” Lori Kallay used three separate layers of glass to give her painting, entiadds Kallay. It’s only been a few short months since Froid’ Art, David Dossett’s winter art installations, contained within a block of ice, have melted away and already this talented local artist is hard at work on his next project. With the arrival of spring he began to think of how he could continue introducing more local artists to Kingstonians and visitors alike. “The city has several outdoor art shows throughout the summer, but they usually only last a day or two – at the most a week,” explains Dossett. “But, then they’re gone. Many people miss them and are disappointed.” He thought to himself these outdoor shows are usually situated in a park somewhere, but not really in locations people frequent while working, eating or going about their daily routines. “I thought it would be nice if these pieces of artwork were displayed in high-traffic areas, right in downtown Kingston.” So his Jardin’Art, “Art in the Garden” project was born. It’s similar to Froid’Art, but with some big differences. “Well, for one, the art won’t melt,” explains Dossett. “With this exhibit artists have a lot more freedom. With Froid’ Art we were restricted to Mylar (a clear thin plastic film) and marker or paint. And of course it had to be freezing outside. With Jardin’Art we can except just about any medium, anything that is colourful, interesting and will generate excitement about art.” For $200 downtown restaurants, B&Bs, businesses and homeowners have been invited to host a piece of art for two months - spring, summer or fall. So far, Chez Piggy Restaurant and Bar, Frankie Pestos, The Queen’s Inn, Sir John’s Public House, Mexico Lindo Y Que Rico, Windmills and Olivea are just a few of the establishments that have signed on to display one of these amazing artworks. “I love this city and that’s why I’m passionate about bringing more color and excitement to it, especially my favourite part, the downtown area,” says Dossett. “I want to encourage people to wander around the lesser traveled streets in downtown Kingston to see the historic homes, buildings and inns. Many they probably were not aware of.” Jardin’ Art will be a unique show, one that is designed to be seen day and night. Artists have the challenge of creating pieces that will also look beautiful when illuminated at night. Close to a dozen artists have signed on for the first phase of this unique project and are finding that

creating artwork for outdoor display is more challenging than painting on a canvas. Outdoor installations have their own challenges. Artists paint on glass or Plexiglas, and use mediums that will endure the challenges of Mother Nature. “This is a new area for myself and for many of the artists,” says Dossett. “We have to consider how this piece of art will endure outside and how it will withstand exposure to the wind, rain and sun. Not to mention, protection from vandalism. In some cases we put a layer of Plexiglas over it. Others are under awnings. Whenever we can, we encourage plants, ivy, flowers, and other natural elements to grow around and over the art so it blends in with the surroundings.” Lori Kallay has pushed the boundaries in her painting of a lily on display at Frankie Pestos. Entitled Lily Flower, she uses three separate layers of glass which gives it an almost magical three dimensional appearance. “I was simply blown away by the amazing detail and beauty of her work,” adds Dossett. “In fact, all the artists have developed unique and varied approaches to this outdoor art display. They are all so beautiful and fascinating. That was quite a challenge and I was amazed how Lori even came up with a concept that was so unique and challenging.” “We are having such a hoot with this project,” says Kallay. “It is pushing our creative boundaries and from the art work so far, I would say it has been a creative success. Kallay is a self-taught landscape artist working primarily with acrylics and watercolour. Her realism style of art is inspired by the natural beauty surrounding her cottage located near Haliburton, Bancroft and Algonquin Park. “I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood summers here and later purchased my own little place in the woods. I think all the senses of the wilderness; the smell, the sounds and the brilliant sights, had a profound impact on my art. Perhaps that’s why I chose realism so that when

someone looks at my paintings, they can put themselves into the place and they will see and feel the things that impact them as opposed to me guiding them to what I feel have value to the scene. “I love to hike and always have my trusted Nikon with me. When I come across a place that pulls me in or makes me want to really just stop and take it all in, I start to shoot photos (way too many) and then I use the photo as my guide. I mean, how can the sight of fresh chartreuse buds on birch trees nestled in the forest not move a person to want to stop and just breathe in the fresh air and listen to the breeze in paper bark peeling back to give us a peek at

the pink tones that lay beneath? Like many creative people, Dossett gets much of his inspiration from other artists, especially those he’s worked with in Froid’Art and Jardin’Art. “It’s just unbelievable how creative they all are and it’s a pleasure and a privilege working with them, he explains. “I was determined to continue on with the Froid’Art after the success last year. Dossett learns as he goes along. For his paintings he’s added a layer of phosphorescent paint so that they glow under black light. “It’s fun but also a challenge to do this kind of art, he says. “I have to work in semi darkness and need to repeatedly turn off the lights to see how my paintings will look under black light. It really does create a cool effect. You get a completely different painting under

We’regivingawayupto

night conditions with a black light. Yessica Rivera Belsham, who also participated in the Froid’Art project, is enjoying creating artwork when the weather is not freezing cold. She has painted two works for this show which will be on display at Chez Piggy Restaurant and Mexico Lindo Y Que Rico. “For my main submission for Jardin’Art I painted for the restaurant Mexico Lindo Y Que Rico, on Sydenham Street, explains Belsham. “However, the moment David shared that Chez Piggy was the first location to launch Jardin’Art, I was drawn to make a tribute painting to the late founders of Chez Piggy, Zal and Rose Yanovsky. “Chez Piggy has been a part of my family’s life for over 25 years, since my mom, Reyna, started working there. My first place of employment was also Chez Piggy and Pan Chancho. I always admired Zal and Rose for their passion of live music, visual arts, culinary arts, diversity,

humanitarian work and their love for each other. They were very inspiring.â€? Belsham gets inspiration from lived experiences, her culture, nature, and her love of colour and expression through the arts. “The piece I did for Mexico Lindo Y Que Rico, is Aztec themed with bold colours and is a representation of my Mexican heritage.â€? It’s going to be an exciting summer for these adventurous artists â€œI would just like to say that I feel that public art is a vital part of any community, large or small,â€? explains Kallay. “It provokes conversation, sometimes controversy, always critique and it widens our horizons. It makes us more intelligent and open to new ideas.â€? This is the inspiration behind Jardin’Art. Anyone interested may follow the project can find a map and more locations on Facebook at facebook.com/jardinArtKTown or on Twitter at JardinArtKTown.

Kingston sailor excited for Pan Am experience By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Pan Am Games – Danielle Boyd grew up sailing at the Kingston Yacht Club with her dad every summer. Now, she’ll be sailing with athletes from across the Americas at the Pan Am Games. Boyd, along with her teammate Erin Rafuse from Halifax, will compete this summer in the highlevel 49erFX class sailing competition. The pair qualified for the games in February at a competition in Clearwater, Fla., but the excitement for the games didn’t kick in immediately. “We were the top North American boat and the top Canadian boat in that competition, but we knew we still had a lot of work to do,” explained Boyd. “We’ve been really working on improving our international sailing at different competitions and gearing up for not only the Pan Am Games, but also working toward the Olympics in 2016.” Boyd is no stranger to the pressures of competition. The 24-yearold competed in her first world championship in 2009, was actively involved with the Dalhousie Sailing Team throughout her undergraduate years, and was a member of the

Student Yachting World Cup team that finished 2nd in France this past year. Boyd grew up sailing on skiffs, which are lightweight, high-performance boats, and quickly moved to the 49erFX. The boat has been used in the Olympics for a number of years for males, but 2016 will be the first time the class will be included in women’s sailing competitions. “Because it is a new boat, the Pan Am Games decided to debut it at the games this summer,” said Boyd. “It should be a really great experience for us with the boat, the media attention and the pressures.” Boyd and Rafuse have been preparing for the games since qualifying and will be participating in a training camp just before the games in Portugal at the European Championships. Boyd feels prepared for the games, but she is also worried about unpredictable elements in Toronto. “Toronto in the summer is not necessarily a favourite place to sail,” she said. “It is really hard to predict what the wind will do and in the summer it is pretty hot and sometimes really still. It can be really hard to maintain position in those conditions, so that will be

challenging.” Boyd and Rafuse will be competing starting July 12 and will face five other teams in their class. They will race three times a day for five days before competing in the medal round on July 18. “It is pretty intense and we will be competing against a world champion team too,” she said. “It will be good for us to see how we do against such high level athletes and we are excited to be competing for Canada.” Even though the games are in Toronto, Boyd has been in and out of Kingston to visit family and friends leading up to the games. She loves visiting the city and the Kingston Yacht Club and soaking up the support. “The community support has been amazing and Kingston has been awesome. We hope to make them proud.” Boyd and Rafuse will travel to Toronto for July 6 and settle into the athlete’s village. Boyd is excited to compete, but she is also excited for everything about the games. “I am looking forward to opening ceremonies and being part of it all,” she said. “As an athlete, this is what you work for and I am so excited to experience it all.”

Kingston native Danielle Boyd will compete in sailing at this summer’s Pan Am Games.

Daytripper - Best sellers lists are dominated by genre fiction, and there’s a new literary festival in town to celebrate the world of the genre. The inaugural Limestone Genre Expo will be held on July 25 at the Ongwanada Resource Centre on Portsmouth Avenue. “It feels like genre fiction writers are overlooked,” said Festival Director Liz Strange. “We have a lot of great talent. an untapped market.” Untapped? In terms of recognition, definitely; but the genre market is a commercial success. Thousands upon thousands of readers consume millions of genre books. Actual books as well as ebooks. The Limestone Genre Expo is onto a good thing. Genre fiction is responsible for 90% of fiction sales. Literary fiction holds less than 8% of the market. The new kid in town is the graphic novel. It only makes up 2% of current market sales, but its market share is the faster growing. And romance? That genre alone claims at least 25% of the book market. Genre novels create the energy propelling the publishing industry away from total annihilation. Genre is not an area of writing to be ignored, yet many literary festivals do just that. What are the most popular genres? In fifth place, horror. Think Dean Koontz and Stephen King. These writers are for the reader who gets off on the adrenalin of fear in stories that meander through shocking issues. Its rawness turns off some readers, so it’s not at the top of the genre list. Next comes science fiction and fantasy. Harry Potter and the Hunger Games fit here. Add in George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones and you have a big chunk of the readership market. This genre, as well as horror, account for many books that are turned into movies. In third place, religious and inspirational novels own a big NEW chunk of the market. This in! cludes Christian writers, but also those tending toward the New Age end of the spectrum. Paulo Coelho would fit here. Just above the religious and inspirational genre come crime and mystery. This genre often involves multiple books with similar characters like Sher-

lock Holmes, Maeve Kerrigan, Lisbeth Salander and Special Agent Pendergast. At the top of the list, romance and erotica own the book industry, running ahead of the pack as effectively as Secretariat ran the races. Danielle Steel fits in this category. So does mommy porn. Genre itself has an increasing number of subcategories. Under romance, you can fine historical romance, erotic romance, paranormal romance, Christian romance, and young adult romance. These days there is much crossover between genres. A series like Twilight easily fits it into both the fantasy and paranormal romance categories. At its core, genre is about good story. It’s about writers like Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, Jane Casey, Stephen King, Val McDermid and J.K. Rowling. Given the choice between a good storyteller and a good writer, I’ll take the good storyteller any day. The best literary author in the world can put me to sleep. But a good storyteller, despite some literary flaws, can keep me on the edge of my seat. When you combine good storytelling with elegant and literary writing skills, you have authors like Preston & Child (they co-write most of their novels) and Stefanie Pintoff. The Limestone Genre Expo will cater to a wide range of tastes. “People can expect a really fun day,” said Strange. “There will be a little bit of everything.” There are several panel discussions planned, including ones on science fiction and historical romance. Moderated panels include sessions with authors specializing in fantasy, horror, sci-fi, romance and mystery. Other panels will look at such topics as World Building and Sexuality and Gender Roles in Modern Genre Fiction. “We’ll be looking at trends,” said Strange. “What’s going on in the market, what people like and don’t like.” Continued on page 38

DAYTRIPPER

A bibliophile’s delight Continued from page 28

There will be a couple of author readings. Strange said two publishers will be holding pitch sessions where writers can pitch their work in person to representatives of the publishing industry. That alone could be worth the price of admission for aspiring authors. The festival has lined up workshops that include Chapter One, Page One with Caro Soles. She’ll look at what pulls a reader in, sentence after sentence, paragraph after paragraph and page after page. Doug Smith will host the Play-

ing the Short Game workshop that looks at marketing and selling short fiction and how to build a career as a short fiction writer. The workshop will explore rights and licensing for short fiction, a strategy for selecting your target markets, finding short fiction markets, selecting the right market, submitting short fiction to a market, and what not to do when submitting. Matt Moore’s workshop, Keep Readers on the Edge of Their Seats, will examine how to immediately hook readers, give them a reason to follow the character, and build to a powerful ending. You’ll learn techniques to keep readers turning

pages to see how it all ends. The Expo is intended for all ages. This writers’ and readers’ festival has some zing. Lots of young writers. And not-young writers. Diversity. When they are not presenting, many authors will be hanging out in the common area where attendees can purchase books and talk with the writers directly. The organizers hope this is the first of many annual genre festivals. “We’d like to be able to grow,” said Strange. “We’d like it to become a whole weekend. We’d like to partner with other events and co-

promote.” She explained that the Limestone Genre Expo would also like to help run other events like writing workshops throughout the year. “Many writing events are not affordable for people,” said Strange. “We want to keep costs down. We want people who want to come to be able to afford to come. We’re so pleased that all the authors who are coming want to help make it a success.” The price for the Limestone Genre Expo is great. The cost for this event is $20 in advance online or $25 at the door. You can also order an advance lunch for $14. “[Limestone Genre Expo] is for anyone who enjoys a good book, reading, writing and having a fun day,” said Strange. I’m one of those people. I am excited to attend this event and I’ve

already put my money where my mouth (and writing) is. I’ve got my ticket for July 25. I also offered to help in any way, so I’ll be moderating the panel of horror writers. Should I be concerned? Check behind my shower curtain? The Limestone Genre Expo is going to provide a great day for writers and readers. A great week, actually. I travel directly from this conference in Kingston to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference in New York City. So it will be a week of writer’s nirvana. To register, go to www.limestonegenre.ca. You can also check out the festival at facebook.com/ limestonegenre and follow them on Twitter @limestonegenre. Mark Bergin on Twitter @markaidanbergin
