Miniature horses allowed to stay, staff to work on bylaw for ‘hobby farms’ By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — The miniature horses can stay in Arden, for now at least, while staff works on a new bylaw that would allow for the keeping of pets that some might consider farm animals and perhaps even more limited agriculture on Central Frontenac properties. The issue came to a head last month when a neighbor complained about Tommy and Teddy two miniature horses owned by Brian Skillen and Margaret Mallory on their Clarke Road property in Arden. At 0.4 hectares (1 acre), the Skillen/Mallory property is smaller than the required 4 hectares (9.88 acres) that would be required under the current bylaw to keep ‘farm’ animals. “It’s important to note that the current bylaw does not distinguish between types of horses and whether certain horses should be considered pets instead of livestock,” said Planner Joe Gallivan said at last week’s regular Central Frontenac Council meeting in Sharbot Lake. However, Council did direct staff to investigate solutions that would allow the miniature horses to Gazette Events – Arden batik artist Sarah Hale with a ‘triptych’ display of three recent works stay where they and Gallivan presented them with was at wood turner Dunn Sohn’s studio on Armstrong Line last weekend along with Heather four options which included a site-specific exempSherratt, Anais Fritzlan and Choleena Ditullio for the Perth Area Autumn Studio Tour. tion and amending the current bylaw to clarify ‘ag Photo/Craig Bakay ricultural uses.’ But it was a third option, directing staff to re-

search small scale agriculture as a permitted use under zoning bylaws that Council decided on. The bylaw would be Township-wide and may require an Official Plan amendment for implementation, Gallivan said. “I agree with the more comprehensive review,” said Mayor Janet Gutowski. “We know about this one case but there could be more out there. “(And) we know that there is interest in small scale agriculture which could lead to more people coming to live in the Township in the future.” As well, the resolution contained a provision to allow the horses to remain where they are until such time as the study is completed and a new bylaw passed. Gallivan said: “Other municipalities have included provisions in their bylaws to permit hobby farms in Agricultural or Rural Zones as an accessory use to residential property. “Others have allowed for hobby farms in any zones where single detached dwellings are permitted, outside of hamlet boundaries. These bylaws generally have provisions to limit the number of livestock units per area of land, and often a maximum lot area to restrict the development of hobby farms o lots which should be considered agriculture use.” CAO/Clerk Larry Donaldson said the Ministry of Environment had inspected the property and the only issue they had was to require some caulking on the well casing where the pump wires entered.

Gazette News — Candidate for councilor Jim Lowery set the tone for the Hinchinbrooke District 4 all-candidates meeting in Piccadilly Hall last weekend with his opening line: “Hi, I’m Jim Lowery and I’m an alcoholic . . . oops, wrong meeting.” All joking aside, as these things go, this one was relatively cordial. However, there were several issues on voters’ minds, not the least of which was the fate of the hall they were meeting in. A staff report recommending the closure of Piccadilly Hall was at the centre of the first question asked. “It was just a report,” said councilor candidate (incumbent) Heather Fox. “And the firehall (the substation next door) was never on the table. “However, the hall doesn’t raise enough funds to support itself but I’m not in favour of closing it . . . and I raised funds for this firehall.” “I wasn’t on Council when that report came in,” said councilor candidate (incumbent) Phillip Smith. “But the only thing that got approved was the rates. “We need the hall and station, it doesn’t make sense to close them.” “I’m new at this but I’d keep it open,” said Lowery. “The fire station and the hall share a septic system and hydro,” said councilor candidate Brent Cameron. “I don’t know that you could close one without the other. “But we need this hall and I’ll do everything in my power to keep it open.” “I was appalled to here closing it was even considered,” said councilor candidate Sharon Shepherd. “ “I think one thing Council has to do is provide things that are central to a sense of community,” said mayoralty candidate (incumbent councilor) Frances Smith. “Besides, the kitchen here is beautiful.” “Rather than just raise rates, we decided to have a small task force look at all our buildings,” said mayoralty candidate (incumbent) Janet Gutowski. “We’ve put $300,000 into this building over 10 years. “Please, use your hall. Keep it alive.”
Not surprisingly, the next question was about the former Hinchinbrooke school in Parham, and how the candidates felt about buying it. “We have a number of Parham groups looking for a home,” said Gutowski. “And there are a large number of them advocating for Hinchinbrooke school, some because of the parking issues here at Piccadilly.” “I honestly don’t know about Hinchinbrooke school,” said Frances Smith. “It’s a beautiful piece of property but the building is questionable. It would take a lot of money to knock it down.” “I was at Revell Ford when they did their renovations and I learned that a lot of things can crop up,” said Shepherd. “It’s a no for me. Use this building.” “The Township has put in an expression of interest but there have been no talk of numbers,” said Phillip Smith. “Does it really need $150,000 in renovations?” “I’m in favour of buying it but we’d need a feasibility study so we’re not pay- Hinchinbrooke District 4 candidates at the all-candidates debate last week in Piccadilly Hall included (from left) Brent Cameron, Jim Lowery, Heather Fox, Phillip Smith, Sharon Shepherd as well as mayoralty candidates ing a lot of money.” Photo/Craig Bakay “My heart’s there but it’s a lot of Frances Smith and Janet Gutowski. money,” said Cameron.

Eilevale Farms receives provincial award by the Frontenac County Plowman’s Association and we never thought we’d win, but we were happy and surprised when we got the call.” Gazette News – Ron Sleeth comes The awards were created to recogfrom a long line of farmers. His greatnize outstanding Ontario farm famigreat grandfather moved to the Batterlies who best represent the value of sea area in 1820 as a farmer and his the family farmer. Each year, 10 lucky grandfather bought the land that Sleeth farms receive the honour. The program focuses on recognizing the contributions these families make to enhancing quality of life in their agricultural communities. “We really see our community contributions as necessary and just another responsibility that comes along with owning a farm,” said Sleeth, who has also been part of municipal politics in the area for more than 20 years. “We fundraise for the [Battersea Pumpkin Festival] each year and we do work for it. We also donate about 4,000 litres of milk to the food banks each year and we try to give back to the community whenever we can. We don’t do it for recognition, but the award is welcome.” Sleeth runs the farm with the help of his entire family. His four sons all contribute in some way and even grandsons and daughter-in-laws help out when they can. The farm is home to 30 registered Holsteins that are milked each day, and Sleeth always appreciates extra hands when he can get them. “As a family farm we all have to work together to make it work so in turn we can all benefit from the laEilevale Farms in Battersea received one of 10 BMO Farm Family Awards bours,” says Sleeth. “Everyone really has a role to play in the farm and we for 2014. The Farm Family Award comes with a blue cast-iron plaque that the Sleeths can display proudly on their sign. The family was also invited to a celebration in Ivy, Ontario this past September. “They invited us to the International Plowing Match to receive the award. There was a luncheon and tickets to the state show at the match and it was a really nice awards ceremony,” said Sleeth. “We were very pleased and our whole family was able to come out and receive it together.”
While the award doesn’t affect the day to day activities around the farm, Sleeth is happy to have some recognition of the hard work they put in each day. He and his family strive to continue farming and contributing to the community in whatever way they can for many years to come. “I love farming and the dairy cows. Paul [Sleeth] focuses on plowing the fields and he loves that. It’s good because we both enjoy what we do and the operation as a whole. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Planners, CAOs to meet with MMAH staff before finalizing County Official Plan Reporter
Gazette News — Frontenac County’s Official Plan (OP) will still take a couple of weeks before it’s passed, County Council decided at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. Although Joe Gallivan, manager of sustainability planning, came to
the meeting with a bylaw already to be passed, several members of Council, most notably the South Frontenac representatives, still had issues with it. And so, in a 5-4 vote, Council opted for a meeting with Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing before submitting the final draft for approval. (North and Central Frontenac
voted to send in the final draft as presented, South and Frontenac Islands voted against. The Mayor of South Frontenac has two votes owing to the size of the Township as opposed to the other three.) “Again I’ll say that a lot of work has gone into a project that we in South Frontenac don’t agree with,” said Dep. Warden Gary Davison. “Most of our asks still weren’t addressed, such as the 30-metre setback which would require and OP

John McDougall. “But we’re going to have a cloudy relationship with the Province because we have a cloudy relationship with ourselves. “There’s got to be a way where we can all get on board for this. Janet Gutowski. “But I believe we’re at a crossroads here (and) now is the time it should be done. “It’s (deferral) a waste of time.” “I find that comment rather trite,” said Davison. Gallivan said that there could still be relief for South Frontenac’s concerns even if MMAH doesn’t agree to their changes. Once an OP is in place, unnder the Planning Act Ontario Regulation 525/97 a municipality can be exempted, such that amendments to official plans are exempt from approval of the Minister

Frontenac Transportation Services providing the rides for clients, director tells Council By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — “Have we been able to provide the rides? The answer is yes,” Northern Frontenac Community Services Director Don Amos told Frontenac County Council at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. Amos was at Council to provide a report on Frontenac Transportation Services, which received an $86,000 grant or each of its 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 fiscal years and $96,000 for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. It’s fiscal year begins in April. Frontenac Transportation Services is a partnership with NFCS and Southern Frontenac Community Services that provides rides for constituents, primarily for medical visits and other reasons, to those who can’t afford them. “There are usually about two or three requests a month that we are not able to fulfill,” Amos said. “Those are usually same-day or next morning requests.” The drivers are mostly volunteers, who are compensated for mileage. “There are still a couple of pockets, mostly in South Frontenac, where we are looking for drivers,” he said. Central Frontenac is the busiest of the three townships serviced by the program, he said, accounting for 1,172 or 60 per cent of the roundtrip rides given for the current fiscal year. (In
2012-2013, there were 3,759 rides and 3,846 ents,” Amos said. “This too involves staff time in 2013-2014.) About half of those, 517 were and volunteer resources.” from Sharbot Lake, 212 from Arden, 201 from Amos said eligibility for subsidies are based Parham, 130 from Tichborne, 58 from Mountain on need, as determined by income. Grove, 29 from Maberly, 10 from Westport, 8 “The vast majority of rides are medical as from Clarendon and 7 from Godfrey. The 129 rides from North Frontenac Township account for 7 per cent. (229 rides in 20122013 and 306 rides in 2013-2014.) Of those, 69 were from Ompah, 28 from Plevna, 14 from Henderson, 11 from Ardoch, 6 from Mississippi and 1 from Cloyne. The 647 rides from South Frontenac account for 33 per cent of the total. (1,612 rides in 20122013 and 1,762 in 2013-2014.) Of those, 195 were from Sydenham, 123 from Verona, 97 from Inverary, 58 from Harrowsmith, 57 from Glenburnie, 35 from Elginburg, 33 from Perth Road, 26 from Battersea, 15 from Hartington and 8 from Kingston. Coun. Gary Davison questioned providing rides from Elginburg, Glenburnie and Kingston, given that they are part of the larger municipality of the City of Kingston. “It’s because those people are accessing the SFCS programs in Sydenham,” said Amos. “It’s a comfort level for each client.” In South Fronenac, rides are subsidized for seniors only. North and Central Frontenac subsidizes rides for seniors and child/youths, due to NFCS’s daycare and after school programs. “To date, 196 rides were cancelled by cli-
opposed to social or shopping trips,” he said. “About 99 per cent. “But we do provide social rides where the client pays the full freight, usually loading four or five into a car.”

Editorial With the election four days away, most of the races are too close to call Craig Bakay Reporter
editorial@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Column — Well, four days until the election and things are still up in the air. In the absence of polling there really are no parameters as to who might be ahead and there are a number of races too close to call. For instance, the South Frontenac mayoralty race is one of the closest in recent memory, with Coun. Al McPhail and Coun. Ron Vandewal seemingly neck and neck. Dark horse John McEwen is also running but let’s face it, he’s a raw rookie at municipal politics and it’s virtually unheard of for someone running for the first time to get the Mayor’s job. The only one to ever do it in Eastern Ontario that I can think of was Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark, who as a 22-year-old managed to scoop up the Mayor’s job in Brockville in 1982 in what was clearly an anti-establishment backlash. Former North Frontenac Mayor Ron Maguire got in in his first try but nobody ran against him (can we
say ‘nobody else wanted the job?’) McEwen is clearly the most entertaining of the three but that won’t be near enough to win him the chair. Of the other two, McPhail can appear aloof at times and Vandewal has been known to have a bit of a temper, but neither is a dealbreaker. In an informal poll of former municipal politicians at the Wardens Banquet last week, nobody wanted to go out on a limb and pick one over the other. One race in South Frontenac that probably is pretty certain is for Limestone District School Board trustee. As qualified and intelligent as Lindsay Davidson might be, she doesn’t live in the district she seeks to represent and as one colleague put it “once they find out you don’t live here, you’re done. That seat is incumbent Suzanne Ruttan’s to lose. She may have voted to close several schools but none of them were in South Frontenac. In the councilor races, (there are only two), newcomer Brad Barbeau will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to knock off popular incumbents John McDougall and Bill Robinson in Portland. In Loughborough, the sheer number of candidates (six) makes for confusing choices for voters.

Kanata Kourier-Standard Arnprior Chronicle-Guide
In those cases, known names tend to have an edge which would make one think that Ross Sutherland, who has run in provincial elections and former Coun. Fran Willis might have an edge. However, Mark Schjerning has performed well in debates and Stephen Bach has apparently knocked on a lot of doors. Dave Plumpton and Terry Thake would appear to be dark horses in this field. In Central Frontenac, the most interesting race would seem to be in Hinchinbrooke District. Since amalgamation, the only councilor from District 4 to ever win reelection was the late Bill Snyder who died in office in February. Former Coun. Phillip Smith was appointed to replace him but Smith was defeated in his re-election bid last time out by incumbent Coun. Heather Fox. Which brings up an interesting point — one of the great truisms in rural politics is that if you have enough relatives in the riding, you can probably get elected. That would seem to bode well for Fox and if such is the case, the other Hinchinbrooke representative could turn out to be (Uncle) Jim Lowery, who by the way probably has the best sense of humour seen in any candidate in a long time.

In Our Opinion
Deer season brings extra risk for drivers in rural areas Gazette Editorial – It’s deer season and while this may be good news for hunters, it is not good news for drivers. Late fall and early winter are high season for deer, especially around dawn and dusk. Nearly 14,000 vehicle-wild animal collisions were reported in Ontario last year and many more were certainly not reported. Most accidents involving collisions with deer frequently happen in October, November and December as deer increase their movements due to breeding activities. The Ministry of Natural Resources has reported that deer density in some areas in Ontario is as high as 14 deer per square kilometer. Each year, 200 people across North America die from collisions with wild animals and one out of every 17 collisions involves an animal. These numbers certainly are scary and the odds of hitting a deer increase when you move into rural areas, in fact 89 per cent of collisions occur on two-lane roads outside of urban centres and 86 per cent of crashes occur in what is considered good driving conditions. So what can you do to prevent your car from colliding with a deer? Be alert, especially at dusk and dawn and use your high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. Maybe have a passenger survey the sides of the road while you are driving and alert you if they see anything moving. Always wear a seat belt and abide by the speed limits. If you do see a deer and you are able to stop for it, flash your lights or beep your horn in short bursts to get them moving across the road. These are some precautions you can take as a driver, but the reality is that these are still wild and unpredictable animals and they do tend to come out of nowhere. The best thing to do is just be aware of your surroundings and remember that they also tend to travel in groups so if you see one, pause and wait for more before continuing on the road. Safe driving!

Digital pieces of me
storing all the bulky cases. Over Christmas break in 2005, Steve and I left our Ottawa apartment for a couple of weeks to do our usual rounds visiting family and friends in Kingston and Niagara. We came home to find our apartment had been robbed. The next hour was a blur. Someone had emptied every drawer and closet and thrown their contents across the room. A police officer came over asked us a bunch of questions, but he didn’t seem very optimistic that they would find the culprit. I was left feeling violated and upset. Worse, I lost my beloved CD collection. Convenient and portable in its album, it was probably the most valuable thing the robbers took, from both monetary and sentimental perspectives. We were students in our early 20s, after all. We didn’t have “nice” things. But I had chosen most of that
Editorial - When I was in high school, my dad would buy me a CD whenever I did very well on a test or essay. It was a pretty brilliant motivation technique. CDs were coveted items in the late ‘90s/early 2000s, especially to a teenager whose personal funds were limited. By the time I moved away to university, I had collected over 100 CDs. That’s not to say they were all the result of good grades. Many I received as gifts, or bought with the money I made from my jobs. I kept my CDs in an album, to avoid the hassle of carting around and
music with my dad, who played such a pivotal role in influencing my own tastes. A music collection, perhaps especially to a young adult, is a large part of who you are. The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan, The Dave Matthews Band, Tori Amos, Simon and Garfunkel and so many more - they had all helped shape me. I felt like I had lost a family member. Life went on, though, as it tends to do. I quickly discovered that music can be downloaded - ahem - much more cheaply than it can be purchased on CD. Later that year, I got my first iPod and embarked on an all-new music listening journey. I’ve been thinking about this experience lately because I made the decision to give away many of my books. I may have had an impressive CD collection in my day, but it was nothing compared to my book trove. Since I was a child, I have
been, for lack of a better term, a book hoarder. I love everything about books - from the fact that they contain stories that entertain you to the sound the pages make when you turn them. Recently, however, I started to realize how much my ever-growing book collection is weighing me down. Every time Steve and I move, the thing I dread most is packing my hundreds of books into boxes, then unpacking them and trying to find room on my relatively limited bookshelf space all over again. So over the last month, people have come over to my house to raid my bookshelves. Only they were friends, not robbers, and giving my books to them was mostly a pleasure. Mostly. Admittedly, thoughts like - “what if I want to read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter again someday?” often came to mind. But the reality is that this and all

my books still exist in the world at the library, in e-book form, or, if I’m really missing something, the bookstore. Plus, I adore the idea of people I know and like discovering books I’ve enjoyed because of me. It makes me feel like I’m doing a good deed, even though it’s ultimately self-serving. Now, I’m preparing to donate many more of books to the library book sale, keeping only those I truly can’t bear to part with. The experience has made me feel lighter, freer, less intimidated by the thought of moving. While I wouldn’t go so far as to compare a Kobo to an iPod, I do see a benefit to being less tied down by heavy, physical things by making use of digital technology. Just because these things are not physically present in my house at all times, doesn’t make them less of a part of me.

Famed frontman Steven Page shares his journey through mental illness hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca

News - Former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has lived with mental illness for most of his life; now, he’s on a mission to pass on what he has learned from these experience to others, and bring awareness to what can be done to improve how both our healthcare system and society at large views and responds to mental illness. The Heritage chatted with Page in advance of his Oct. 22 appearance as guest speaker at the mental health conference Doing Whatever it Takes: Ethics in ACTion, which is being hosted by Providence Care over several days at the Ambassador. “Some of my struggles have been fairly public, so I felt it was worthwhile for me to share my experiences,” Page says, explaining that he first began doing these talks when he was invited on an episode of the CBC Radio program The Current. “That was such a popular episode that they brought me back to do a phone-in show and since then I’ve had a lot of offers to come speak to people.” Now, Page speaks at several mental health-related events every month. “At first I wondered what I had to offer that was different from all the others, but I think one of the biggest things is to show people that [although] the struggle continues for anybody who deals with mental health issues and there are ups and downs, it is possible to [be treated and learn how to cope].” He notes that right from the start, it can be difficult for doctors to determine exactly what form of mental illness a patient has. Apple and cheese French toast sandwiches a new take on old standard Gazette Lifestyle - In this “grilled cheese and apple sandwich meets French toast,” thin slices of apples are wedged between two slices of cheese and bread. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: four
• • • • • • •
2 McIntosh or Empire apples, thinly sliced 3 Ontario Eggs 3/4 cup (175 mL) milk 2 tbsp (25 mL) granulated sugar 1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla 2 tbsp (25 mL) butter Ontario Maple Syrup
Ingredients • 8 slices (1/2-inch/1 cm) day old sourdough, French or Italian bread • 8 slices medium cheddar cheese
Preparation instructions Place 4 slices of the bread on work surface and top each with 1 slice of cheese. Place even layer of apples on cheese, then top with
second cheese slice. Cover with remaining slices of bread to make 4 sandwiches. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour into shallow dish large enough to hold 1 sandwich. In large nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Dip sandwich into egg mixture, turning to soak (don’t oversoak). Add two sandwiches to skillet at a time and cook until golden brown on both sides, tow to three minutes per side. Cut in half and serve with
maple syrup. Tip: One or two day-old stale bread is ideal for French toast as fresh bread absorbs too much liquid, making it soggy. Nutritional information One serving: Protein: 24 grams Fat: 25 grams Carbohydrate: 66 grams Calories: 588 Fibre: 4 grams Sodium: 850 mg

The “Latin American Bob Dylan” to play in Kingston Columnist
Events - Renowned Cuban musician Carlos Varela will perform in Kingston Oct. 30 at the new Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Known as “The Latin American Bob Dylan,” Varela has produced eight CDs and toured Europe, the Caribbean, and North America. Karen Dubinsky, professor of Global Development Studies and History at Queen’s University, organized Varela’s visit. “It’s a great privilege to invite a musician of Varela’s international stature to perform in Kingston,” said Dubinsky. “The Isabel theatre is such a beautiful venue, we are lucky to have it here and to be able to use it for a wide variety of musical styles.” Often called “the voice of a generation,” Varela is an immensely popular singer-songwriter in Cuba. He plays in the neuva trova tradition of music, a style that first emerged out of the Cuban Revolution. Neuvo trova is political music—
hence the comparisons to Bob Dylan— though the political content of Varela’s music is more poetic than polemic. Varela has been critical of policies of both the American and Cuban governments. During the Bush years Varela couldn’t tour in America because, as was the case for most Cuban artists, he was refused entry to the U.S. But the Cuban government also thought him controversial. During the 1980s, while Varela gained mass popularity in Cuba, his music could rarely be heard on Cuban radio except in the middle of the night. Raised in Havana, a young Carlos Varela played the guitar and sang with his friends during frequent blackouts. And in an interview with Dubinsky, Varela attributed some of Cuba’s cultural vitality to the challenges the country has faced. Varela explains

If you have very open eyes, and the sensibility to connect with what’s happening, there is incredibly creative energy and motivation. I think there are creative impulses all over the world, but in Cuba there is so much passion and so many contradictions in everything that happens, every day, it’s fuel for the creator. You know there is an expression here, you kick a stone and out pops an artist.” This isn’t Varela’s first visit to Kingston; not only has he performed here before, but in June he received an honorary

October is the time to celebrate our Community Support Programs. Every day, Personal Support Workers (PSWs), nurses and Southern Frontenac Community Services Corporation (SFCSC) volunteers deliver critical services to frail seniors, and persons with disabilities, debilitating chronic diseases or conditions. The best kind of health care is frequently delivered in the community. Our Community Support Programs provide a broad range of services, from Meals-on-Wheels, personal and home support, wellness and social activities to transportation. Our community services ease pressure on our hospitals, while ensuring that whenever possible South Frontenac residents receive the care where it will do them the most good – in the comfort of their own homes. If you are looking for community services, call us at 613376-6477 or 1-800-763-9610. If we cannot help, we know who can and will gladly partner you with the Community Care Access Centre or the SMILE Program in South East Ontario. Our services cover South Frontenac Township, Portland through Loughborough, Storrington and rural Kingston, north of the highway 401. Community Support Month is also a time to volunteer – to help your neighbours and build community. We are in particular need of volunteer drivers in both North and South Frontenac to provide transportation for shopping, social programs, medical and legal appointments. Time commitment is on an as needed basis and your kilometers will be reimbursed. To learn more about other volunteer opportunities and how you can help, please go to SFCSC’s website, www.sfcsc.ca or call us for a personal meeting. And it wouldn’t be October without Thanksgiving and being grateful for the bounty we all enjoy. SFCSC operates a food bank that frequently serves over 125 adults and 90 children every month. We currently need lunch items, canned meat, crackers, cereal, pork and beans. Cash donations are also welcome and allow us to purchase fresh produce, milk and eggs and other perishable items for those in need. SFCSC offers a wide range of programs, from family help and senior’s services to caregiver support and hospice services. We have been your local community support organization since 1989 and will continue to meet the needs of South Frontenac residents in the years to come. Thank you for your support!
Much like their many of their human counterparts, pets do not always relish winter. Animals can experience arthritis pain or fatigue when the cold sets in. Shorter periods of daylight also may make them less active and likely to sleep for longer periods of time. In an effort to stay warm, some pets get creative. Cats can unintentionally put themselves in danger just to chase a chill away. The American Animal Hospital Association says cats will curl up against almost anything, including car engines, to stay warm. Cats caught in moving engine parts can be seriously hurt or killed. Be-
fore you turn your engine on, check beneath the car or make a lot of noise by honking the horn or rapping on the hood. Also, if you have exposed radiators in a home or apartment, construct a cover to prevent cats and dogs from climbing on the exposed coils. The hot water pumping through radiators can cause burns. Cats and dogs also may get too close to fireplaces, so use a protective screen to keepthem away from hot embers. Pets also can knock over portable heaters in an attempt to get warm. Look for models that automatically shut off if they fall over to reduce your risk of fire.

Van Huffel has performed all over the world, but no place reminds him of his musical roots like Kingston. “When I come back, I have these feelings and memories of where my musical roots came from,” he said. “There wasn’t a huge jazz music scene in Kingston, but there were some amazing musicians and they were all very helpful to me when I was growing up,” he added, recalling his weekly Sunday afternoon performances at Kingston’s former bar, The Wellington, when he was 15 yearsold and a student at Bayridge Secondary School. Van Huffel first began playing the
saxophone when he was 13 years-old. He studied with Kingston saxophonist Rick Flanagan, and Kingston guitar player Dave Barton. In 1997, Van Huffel left Kingston to attend the jazz program at Humber College in Toronto. He then moved to New York City to pursue his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music. Van Huffel spent a number of years in New York, where he met with Bass and Davis. “I got to know them very well in my earlier development stages and we used to play together,” he explained. Eleven years after leaving Kingston, Van Huffel decided it was time for a change, packed his bags and made the move to Berlin. Little did he know that years later, fate would reunite him once again with Bass and Davis. “They ended up in Berlin for a few days, and we threw a concert together, completely unrehearsed, and it just had a very magical vibe to it.” “It was very easy to play with them again, and although we were playing music that we hadn’t played together, we quickly found a way with the music,” he noted. A year and a half after that concert, the ensemble released their CD Boom Crane in

June 2014. Van Huffel said he is especially proud of the way this year has panned out. “In the past I’ve released a new CD every couple of years. This year I am about to release, in a month or two, the fifth CD, which I will be featured in,” he said. The Mansion performance will take place Oct. 30 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for students. For more information about Van Huffel visit: www.petervanhuffel. com

Stay safe when cleaning gutters may seek the warmth of clogged gutters when temperatures dip to near or below freezing. Cleaning gutters is not that complicated, and many homeowners can clear their gutters of debris in a typical weekend afternoon. But the ease of cleaning gutters should not overshadow the safety risks homeowners take when climbing a ladder to clear out their gutters. The following are a few safety tips for homeowners to keep in mind when cleaning their gutters. * Wear appropriate clothing. Loose-fitting clothing should not be worn when cleaning gutters. Such attire is a tripping hazard and can easily compromise your balance by catching on the gutter or ladder as you reach to remove debris. Wear clothing that does not hang off of you and choose pants that do not fall below your sneakers. Pants that might be a little long in the leg can catch under your feet as you climb the ladder, momentarily costing you your balance and possibly leading to a fall. When choosing footwear, avoid old sneakers or work boots without much traction, opting instead for footwear that easily grips each rung of the ladder. * Don’t forget safety gear. Many people forget to wear safety gear when cleaning their gutters. Such
forgetfulness increases your risk of injury. When cleaning gutters, always remember to wear work gloves, which can protect your hands as you dig into gutters. Should you reach into a gutter without gloves on and grab something sharp, not only will you be cut but also you may be so startled that you lose your balance and fall off the ladder. In addition to work gloves, wear a dust mask and safety goggles when cleaning gutters to prevent debris from getting into your mouth and eyes. * Work with a partner. Cleaning gutters alone is a recipe for potentially devastating injury. Even if you are not afraid of heights, scaling a ladder is not something to take lightly. Ladders can be shaky, especially on brisk autumn afternoons when the wind kicks up. Working with a partner when cleaning gutters ensures someone is below you to hold the ladder steady in case of a stiff wind or if your jostling unintentionally shakes the ladder. Working with a partner also means someone is there to seek help should you fall off the ladder or suffer another type of injury that requires medical attention. * Use a trowel instead of your hands. Digging into the gutter with your hands, even if those hands are covered by gloves, is an unnecessary risk that can leave you susceptible
to injury. When cleaning the gutters, dig out the debris with a trowel. * Dump debris below into a large garbage can. When cleaning the gutter, do not carry a bucket with you to the top of the ladder. Carrying something as you climb up a ladder only increases your risk of injury. In addition, a bucket full of debris placed at the top of a ladder may tip over and compromise your balance. When
dumping the debris you dig out with your trowel, dump it into a large garbage bin below. If you miss the bin every now and again, you can always sweep up after the job is completed. Few homeowners look forward to cleaning their gutters. But such a task is necessary to prevent water and roof damage to your home. When cleaning the gutters, remember to place safety at the top of your priority list.

Come the fall, when trees start to shed their leaves and winds pick up in advance of winter, gutters can easily become clogged with all sorts of debris. When clogged gutters are not cleaned out, a host of potentially costly issues can result, making gutter cleaning an essential autumn chore no homeowner should ignore. Fully functioning gutters direct water away from the structure of a home and into nearby drainage systems. When clogged, gutters cannot direct that water away, and the result is often costly water damage to the home’s foundation. Water that is not directed away may find its way into the basement of a home, causing issues with flooding and mold. But clogged gutters also prevent water from leaving a roof, possibly leading to costly roof repairs and damage to the roof that can put a home’s inhabitants in danger. When snowfall accumulates on a roof, melting snow needs to make its way off the roof via the gutters. If those gutters are clogged with debris leftover from the fall, roof damage, including leaks, is more likely to occur. Clogged gutters also make a welcome respite for unwelcome pests, including rodents and insects. In the warmer months, clogged gutters may make an inviting home to mosquitoes and other pesky insects, while rodents
As the leaves fall off the trees and greenery thins out for the season, exposing branches and undergrowth along the way, homeowners may be tempted to prune their trees and shrubs. But while autumn pruning may seem like a good idea, many gardening experts say it is often best for homeowners to wait until winter or early spring before pruning. Although pruning does thin out branches and tame spent blooms, which can be eyesores, pruning also stimulates new growth. Pruning in the autumn, when plants are naturally preparing to go dormant, can weaken the plants considerably. This can compromise their chances of surviving into the next growing season. Fall temperatures also can be deceiving. While it may be warm during the day when the sun is shining, temperatures can quickly drop overnight. Pruning during the warmth of day, when the sap has risen in the plants, may deplete energy from the plant. When the mercury drops at night, the plant can suffer. If you must spend time in the yard in the fall, tend to the leaves and debris that have already fallen to the ground rather than focusing energy on fall pruning. If you have been diligent during the spring and summer, your shrubs and other plants likely won’t need pruning at this time of year. Wait until winter before taking out the shears. At this point, the woody parts of many plants are dormant and will not be harmed or
primed to grow by the pruning. Chances are you won’t prune too much as well, as chilly temperatures will keep you from spending too much time outdoors. When it’s time to prune, consider these other pointers. * Keep tools clean and in good working order. You risk injury if your tools are dull and in poor shape overall. Spend time sharpening pruners and keep manual tools oiled and clean. Debris can lodge itself in clippers, making it more difficult to open and shut them. Wash and dry tools after use, especially when dealing with diseased plants. Otherwise you risk spreading disease to healthy plants. * Cut back stems completely. It’s usually a good idea to prune branches back to the main stem. Leaving a portion sticking out can catch on people or animals and produce a gathering spot for bacteria and insects. Take out thinner, smaller shoots first before moving on to any dead or dying branches. * Prune dry branches. Do not prune when plants are wet. Pruning damp plants encourages the growth of microbes that can infiltrate the plant. This is not as significant a problem in the winter, when microbes have already been killed. * Ask an expert. If you are unsure of how and when to prune particular plants, consult with an expert at a nursery or wherever you buy your plants.

Mike Bromley hopes to improve the islands with his business and finance knowledge By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Heritage News – Mike Bromley moved to Wolfe Island 10 years ago. He was looking for a place to raise his two young children and the island seemed like the perfect place. “I wanted them to be raised in the same type of place I was raised, which was a rural environment,” explained Bromley, a retired businessman and entrepreneur. “I visited this area when I was younger
and loved it and I still do, but now I see that some changes need to be made at the municipal level.” Thus he decided to run for the position of mayor in Frontenac Islands. “The catalyst that made me decide to run is what I see as a misuse of the wind farm amenities money and just general handling of money here,” explained Bromley. “Right now, Wolfe Island at least, has been subsidizing the tax increase with wind farm money and not really planning for the future.” This lack of planning, according to Bromley, will

NOTICE OF NAMING A PRIVATE ROAD IN THE MATTER of section 27(2) of the Municipal Act, take notice that the Council of the Corporation of South Frontenac will be considering a by-law at a public meeting on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at 7:00 PM, at the Municipal Council Chambers, 4432 George Street, Sydenham, Ontario, regarding a proposed name for an existing private road (or lane) in part of Lots 21 and 22, Concession XII, District of Loughborough. The by-law would name the road/lane “Kismet Lane”. To view a map and for more information, please see the Township website.
ultimately result in a tax increase for the residents of the Frontenac Islands and an increased need to borrow money to keep the municipality afloat. These choices are unacceptable to Bromley. “I believe my skills as a successful entrepreneur are transferable to local government, providing a fresh approach to the status quo. The big thing that is different about me is that my background is entirely business. I have never been elected to anything. I basically start a company and run it and I have had multiple businesses over the years with many of them running concurrently. I have no doubt that I can handle the finances of the municipality more effectively.” Bromley would also look at improving the ferry systems if elected. He knows that heavy traffic during peak periods and during the summer are a huge problem for the Wolfe Island ferry and there are issues with the Howe Island ferry as Mike Bromley is running for the position of mayor in the Frontenac Islands municipality. How to stay safe on wintry roads Many people will remember the winter of 2013-14 for all the wrong reasons. Record low temperatures and heavy snowfall were the story last winter. With winter now on the horizon once again, many motorists are looking for ways to ensure their daily commutes or holiday trips to visit family and friends are as safe as possible. When wintry conditions, including snowfall, compromise driving conditions, it’s best for motorists to stay home. But avoiding roadways altogether is not always an option, so motorists who simply must venture out onto the roadways this winter can employ the following strategies to ensure they safely arrive at their destinations. • Consider winter tires. Many drivers are unsure if they need winter tires. All-season tires may suffice for those drivers who live in regions where heavy snowfall is uncommon. But winter tires are designed to perform when the temperatures are especially cold and in driving conditions featuring ice, slush and snow. Drivers who live in regions where snowfall is significant or even expected to be significant may want to install winter tires just to be on the safe side. Some drivers mistakenly believe that vehicle features such as anti-lock braking systems and traction control make their tires more capable of handling wintry roads. But such features do not provide more traction. ABS and traction control only prevent drivers from over-braking or overpowering the traction of their tires. Only better tires will improve traction. • Drive slowly. Many drivers mistakenly believe they only need to drive slow when snow is falling. But winter weather can make roadways unsafe even in areas that have not witnessed a single snowflake fall from the sky. Wet winter roads can quickly turn into icy winter roads, and no ABS system or traction control device can prevent a car that’s traveling too fast from skidding out. Poor visibility is another reason to drive slowly in winter. Peripheral vision is often compromised when driving in winter, as dirt, salt or sand buildup on windshields and side windows and mirrors can make it hard for motorists to fully view their surroundings. Even if your vision is not compromised, a fellow motorist’s might be. So ease up on the gas pedal in winter so you have more time to
react to potentially adverse conditions. • Don’t drive too closely to other motorists. In addition to driving slowly, motorists also should leave extra room between their vehicles and the vehicles in front of them. In such conditions, for every 10 miles per hour drive a minimum of four car lengths behind the motorist in front of you. So if you are driving 50 miles per hour, be sure to leave 20 car lengths between you and the car ahead of you. This gives you ample time to react and builds in some extra response time should your visibility be compromised. • Maintain your vehicle. A vehicle should be maintained regardless of the season, but it’s especially important that your vehicle perform at its peak in winter. A vehicle’s battery and windshield wipers are a winter driver’s best friend, but only if they are operating at optimal capacity. Being stranded on a

Falling leaves present a beautiful safety hazard
Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves. Staining Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. It’s important to manually pick leaves
off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time. Clogging Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting. Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe.

Slippery surfaces The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

So what can be done to improve fuel economy in the winter? Fortunately, drivers can take several steps to do just that. • Park the vehicle in a garage. Leaving your car in the driveway in the winter means you might have to dig the vehicle out come winter snowstorms. But that’s not the only inconvenience of parking your vehicle outside in the winter, as doing so can adversely affect its fuel economy. When possible, park the car in the garage, as this increases the initial temperature of the engine, engine oil, drive-line fluids, and the vehicle’s cabin. This can shorten the time it takes for the engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature while decreasing the engine and transmission friction that negatively impacts fuel efficiency. • Disregard conventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom has long suggested that idling a vehicle for several minutes will warm up the engine more quickly than simply driving. But many vehicle manufacturers now recommend that drivers idle their vehicles for no more than 30 seconds, noting that idling the car unnecessarily wastes fuel and that driving the vehicle is the fastest way to warm up its engine. If you must warm up the vehicle, stick to the now widely accepted guideline that recommends idling for no more than half a minute. Another nugget of conventional wisdom motorists may want to ignore concerns the motor oil they use in the winter. Many vehicle manufacturers now recommend a specific type of oil to use when driving in cold weather, so follow that advice instead of adhering to past practices that may not have been as fuel efficient. • Monitor tire pressure. As noted, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, so drivers should monitor their tire pressure regularly throughout winter to keep their vehicle safe and to ensure they are not wasting fuel. • Remove the roof rack. Summer adventurists who love tying their mountain bike or kayak to their vehicles’ roof rack before heading off to explore parts unknown should remove those roof racks when the temperatures dip. Roof racks increase wind resistance and decrease fuel economy, so remove them during the offseasons. Fuel economy will almost certainly decrease when the mercury drops. But drivers can employ a number of strategies to make their vehicles more fuel efficient in cold weather.

Many motorists notice that their vehicles seem to get less miles per gallon in cold weather than in warm weather. That’s not a trick of the brain, as studies have shown that cars do, in fact, have poorer fuel in economy in cold weather. According to the United States Department of Energy, fuel economy tests have indicated that, when driving in short-trip city driving, a conventional gasoline car’s gas mileage is about 12 percent lower at 20 F than it would be at 77 F. The disparity is even greater in hybrid vehicles, which can see their fuel economy decline by roughly 34 percent when driven at 20 F. Before drivers can understand how to improve their winter fuel economy, it’s beneficial to learn why cold weather has such an adverse effect on a car’s fuel economy. A host of factors combine to reduce fuel economy in the winter. When temperatures dip, engine oil and other drive-line fluids also get colder, and this increases engine and transmission friction. That forces the vehicle to work harder and use more fuel. An engine also takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature when the weather outside is cold. This won’t have too great an impact on fuel efficiency when taking long trips, but the shorter the trip the less economical the vehicle’s use of fuel will be, as a shorter trip means the vehicle is spending a larger percentage of the overall drive at a less fuel efficient temperature. Another reason fuel economy suffers in the winter is the necessities and certain creature comforts drivers need when driving in the cold weather. Windshield defrosters and vehicle heating systems use a substantial amount of power, and that usage forces the vehicle to expend more energy and use more fuel. And while many drivers consider heated seats one of the greatest automotive inventions known to man, those seats also use up a lot of power that negatively impacts fuel economy. But factors outside the vehicle also impact its fuel economy in the winter. For example, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, and that increases roll resistance, which means the car must work harder and use more fuel to get down the street than it would if it were riding on fully inflated tires in the summertime. Cold air also is more dense than warm air, and that increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle, which then needs to use more fuel to counter the increased drag.

Music as performance art By Mark Bergin Columnist
Gazette Lifestyle –Dr. Mark Sirett, Founding Artistic Director of the Cantabile Choirs, consistently pushes the limits, going places where many conductors or composers fear to wander. It all pays off on stage, when you get to hear some of the most unique music possible. All concerts are held at Sydenham Street United Church. The theme for Cantabile’s 19th season is Postcards. The season features five main-stage concerts that feature the award-winning choirs comprised of almost 300 singers, guest artists and instrumentalists. Sirett explained that in planning the season and looking at a variety of focused theme concerts, they recognized that all the concerts seemed to represent some form of international travel as much as anything. Postcards became the overriding motif. “Then we started to focus in on specific titles,” he said. “We already knew the first concert was going to be dedicated to something dealing with the First World War.” The season opens on Saturday
November 8 with Letters Home, a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The concert focuses on peace, understanding and, above all, hope. As rehearsals were under way for the concert, Sirett received serendipitous information. “We were working on Letters Home and a woman in our Women’s Choir came to rehearsal during the second week with stack of postcards her grandfather had sent home during the First World War,” said Sirett. “A lot them were photos of the troops and what they were saying. There’s a part of our history we easily forget about. When she showed up with the postcards, it really brought it home.” The Letters Home concert will explore more than the First World War. “We touch on the Vietnamese War, World War II, the Serbo-Croation conflict,” said Sirett. “We want people to feel the prevailing message of the evening is largely promoting hope for the future, harmony and reconciliation.” He said that they wanted to be careful not to be seen as glorifying war yet recognizing it as part of our
Cantabile’s 2014/15 season opens on November 8 with Letters Home, an evening representing hope on the anniversary of the First World War. The season’s theme is Post Cards. past and looking to the future with a need for greater awareness. “Part of our presentation, rather than a pre-concert, is having Jamie Swift [if PeaceQuest] offer a retake on how important the First World War was for Canadian identity. His (free) presentation will be held at 2 pm. The concert itself is at 7:30 in the evening.” Letters Home is co-sponsored by Cancoil Thermal Corporation, a long-time Cantabile supporter, as
well as first-time partner PeaceQuest. The message of Letters Home, offered through poetry and music, is that through peace and understanding all will be well. The evening will also feature the world premiere of Canadian composer Sarah Quartel’s newly commissioned work. The second concert of the season will be Cantabile’s annual Christmas event, this year named Dear Santa.
“The idea behind the Post Cards theme was thinking of kids sending letters to Santa,” said Sirett. “So Dear Santa seemed like a logical choice.” The Cantabile Christmas concerts on December 19 and 20, featuring carols old and new, are always a highlight of the Kingston arts year. On March 7, 2015, Cantabile welcomes a talented and vivacious international conductor, Pearl Shangkuan, as conductor-in-residence for the Wishing You Were Here concert. Shangkuan is one of the most sought-after conductors in the world. Dr. Pearl Shangkuan (professor) teaches music at Calvin College in Michigan. She directs the choirs and teaches choral conducting and choral literature. She is the chorus master of the Grammy-nominated Grand Rapids Symphony. “The repertoire Pearl [Shangkuan] has chosen for the March concert is really interesting,” said Sirett. There are a lot of things I was not familiar with. There are some exciting international composers represented. Some are very young composers. Three are in their early 30s.” On April 11, Dear Mom & Dad features Cantabile’s young voices, joining with the award-winning Ajax Young Singers directed by Anna-Lynn Murphy and the McGill Conservatory Children’s Choir directed by Penni Clarke. The Cantabile concert season ends on May 23 with O Danny Boy. If ever there existed a song about longing for person or home, O Dan-
ny Boy is it. The concert features Nua, a new-age Celtic trio, which will join the choirs in the lilting airs and lively jigs of Ireland. “I’m looking forward to hearing group from Toronto, Nua,” said Sirett. “They will be part of this Irish concert. They are really high energy and have an interesting mix of styles. You can tell they have Celtic roots, but there’s something that goes b e y o n d that. They are very exciting.” This Cantabile season this year, like every year, offers more than just musical entertainment. “People don’t know what to expect until they hear the concerts in this beautiful building,” said Hollie Stewart, Cantabile’s Administrative Director. “No one realizes what they are
going to experience. There is something really undeniably compelling about being surrounded by human voices. It’s not like a concert of instruments. Just because you’ve been to a symphony concert, doesn’t m e a n
you’ve experienced all there is in classical or folk music. Choral music is not the same on the radio or

recordings. You really need to hear sound bounce around the room.” She explained that a Cantabile concert offers a unique opportunity to be surrounded by music. “You’ll hear the voice of a child beside a man singing bass,” she said. “The repertoire is diverse and unusual. P e o p l e who hear the choral pieces understand that many of these works you just don’t hear very often. Mark [Sirett] has such an understanding of the pieces, musically and e m o t i o n a l l y, it’s a very holistic experience.” Sirett and Stewart chatted about the progression of Cantabile’s concerts as being organic studies. To each of
them, every song is a work of performance art. “What’s involved is more of a theatrical experience,” said Sirett. “We’re building a show that has movement from beginning to end. It’s not just a collection of individual pieces. A lot of thought is given to how those pieces really come together as a whole, and how people move onto and on the stage.” It’s all about ebb and flow said Stewart. “It involves a certain mood when one piece ends,” she said. “And what’s the best way to let people experience that and move into the next piece gently. A lot of attention is paid to that and it shows.” Sirett compared it to an architecture of music. Sales of the Cantabile season subscription series ends on October 24. After that, tickets for Letters Home (the first concert) become available. Tickets for the rest of the season go on sale on November 10. This is the best deal for live music of this quality in town. One special Saturday night was reserved for some pre-Christmas magic Gazette Lifestyle - This was to be the night. I was so excited, even my toes tingled. It was a Saturday, but there would be no ‘Saturday night house party’ that week. No, this night would be extra special. Because Mother, Audrey and I would sit at the kitchen table and go through Eaton’s catalogue, page by page, and pick out our winter order. Father seemed to take forever at the supper table. He poured his green tea into his saucer, and sat back in his chair waiting for it to cool off. Why didn’t he take it over to the oven door and sip it there? He’d soon be there anyway, pouring through the Ottawa Farm Journal. But no, he sat there like he had all the time in the world. I ushered all the dishes to the other end of the old pine table, Audrey brought over the dish pan full of hot water, and it looked very much like we were going to have to work around him. I let out great sighs, and wiped the red checked
oilcloth within a fraction of his saucer, but that did little to hurry up Father. Finally! He was finished! Never have supper dishes been washed, dried and put away in the cupboard so fast. We wiped the oilcloth dry with a tea towel, Mother took Eaton’s catalogue off the ice box and sat at the head of the table, Audrey and I on either side of her. At the back of the catalogue was the order form. Mother had already filled in the blanks on where the order was to be sent, and all that was needed was a list of the items we would be choosing. We would start at the front, as usual. But we had no interest in the corsets, so Mother quickly moved on to dresses, blouses, and skirts. Even though my sister Audrey looked longingly at the skirts with pleats, she knew better than to ask for one. Any new skirt would come right out of one of Uncle Jack’s dress suits that came regularly in the hand-me-down box from Regina. And so Mother moved on to the underwear. There were the hateful navy blue fleece-lined bloomers! I got a new pair of them every winter, because there wasn’t much left to them by the time winter was over. She wrote down the number and size, and moved on to the
combination underwear. Audrey had long since grown out of long underwear, but I had a few years to go. And I loved the feel of the soft downy combinations that came with the faintest mauve lines in the material, and I was happy to see that a set had joined the list on the order form. We worked our way through the catalogue…me, ‘oohing and awing’ over the bolts of material, the shoes, and of course, the galoshes with the fur trim... just like the ones bad Marguirite wore to the Northcote School. My galoshes were hand-me-downs from Audrey...simple black rubber ones with clamp hooks down the front. They wore the look of many years of hard wear...with patches upon patches Father had put on, much the same way as when he fixed the inner tubes of the Model T Ford. My three brothers were each to get a new plaid flannelette shirt to wear to school. They had no choice in the pattern or the colour. Mother just wrote down a number, and that was all there was to it! And then there were the pages devoted to Christmas. This, without a doubt, was my very favourite part of the catalogue. There were pages of
DEALS YOU LOVE
FOR LESS
decorations, packages of tinsel, and Christmas lights for those lucky enough to have electricity. There would be no entries in the order form from those pages, I knew for a fact. But Mother knew how much I loved that section, and so she let me run my fingers down the pages, and in my mind’s eye, I would pretend the Christmas balls, the fancy wrapping paper, and rolls of ribbons, which for some reason only came in red, green and navy blue, would be added to the list. And then closer to the back of the catalogue were pages of Christmas candy. It came in colourful tins and pails, and I was sure I could smell the peppermint and the caramel right off the pictures. The tins and pails were tilted over, spilling out the candies, and each piece looked like you could pick it right off the page. Then Mother would ask which pail or tin I thought looked the best...and I would agonize over the pictures, rubbing my finger down the page from the top to the bottom, finally settling on one that had hard candies of every shape and size. And I would see Mother write the number on the order form in front of her. And I would be filled with the utmost
joy. Real Christmas candy! Could there be anything more wonderful? At the very bottom of the order Mother would print three letters... C.O.D. That meant the order would be either delivered by the mailman, at which time Mother would have to come up with the money to pay for it, or it would go to Briscoe’s General Store. It would be many years later that I would learn that if the order went to the store, and Mr. Briscoe knew Mother might not have all the money to pay for her Eaton’s order, he would simply add it to her bill, and she paid it off, bit by bit, when she could. True Christmas spirit prevailed back then, many weeks before that magic time came about. And it all started around the old pine table and Eaton’s catalogue, and culminated when it arrived at Northcote, either delivered by our mailman, or with a phone call from Mr. Briscoe that the parcel of treasures had arrived.
