Frances Smith defeats incumbent Gutowski becoming new Central Frontenac mayor defeated incumbent Jeff Matson in her first try at office. Phillip Smith will be joined by Brent Cameron, who also was making his first attempt at Central Frontenac Council. In District 2 (Olden), two-time Coun. John Purdon was defeated by newcomers Jamie Riddell and Victor Heese. (Coun. Norm Guntensperger did not seek re-election, having moved to Hinchinbrooke.
By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — A mighty wind was blowing over Central Frontenac Township on election night. When the winds of change subsided, only three members of the current council would be returning Dec. 1 and only one of those to the seat he’d been elected to in the previous election four years ago. The new Mayor of Central Frontenac Township is Frances Smith, who had been one of the two District 3 (Oso) councilors. Smith, a long-time fixture on Council who had been Reeve of Oso Township and has served as councilor for many years, handily defeated two-term incumbent Janet Gutowski 1996 votes to 1083. There were 21 spoiled ballots. But Gutowski was hardly the only Council member to lose their seat at the table. Four sitting Council members went down to defeat. Coun. Tom Dewey in District 1 (Kennebec) is the only member returning to Council who was elected to the same seat last time around. Coun. Phillip Mayor-Elect Frances Smith hears Smith in District 4 (Hinchinbrooke) will also be returning but Smith was named to the news that she has won the Council to replace Bill Snyder, who died chair in Central Frontenac. South Frontenac elects Ron Vandewal as new mayor By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – It has been a long campaign for Ron Vandewal, but on election night he finally saw his hard work pay off. “I probably made about 300400 phone calls in the past two days and I am very glad that I did,” said Vandewal. “It was all worth it in the end.” Vandewal claimed a total of 3048 votes in the municipality. Opponent and former councillor Allan McPhail came in a close second with 2780 votes and third candidate John McEwen earned 552. All three candidates were joined by family, friends, community members and councillor candidates at the South Frontenac Township Hall on election night and while they all looked a bit nervous, they happily mingled and shook hands. “The race was a friendly one,” added Vandewal. “Allan, John and I never really had a rivalry. It was a great race to be a part of.” Vandewal, a lifelong South Frontenac resident, has been
a councillor in Loughborough District for the past 11 years and deputy mayor three times during that time. His decision to run for mayor was an easy one, especially when he learned that former mayor Gary Davison was not seeking re-election. Vandewal started his campaign very early and he was certainly happy to see it come to an end. “When family day was on in February I was campaigning and now to get to here feels pretty amazing,” explained Vandewal. “It has been a long journey but it feels awesome and I can’t wait to get started.” As mayor Vandewal hopes to streamline communication in the township, regulate tax increases and focus on development in the area. He is known for listening and responding to residents in Loughborough and throughout the township and he hopes to continue listening as mayor. Joining Vandewal on council in South Frontenac will be acclaimed councillors Pat Barr and Alan Revill for Bedford District and Norm Roberts and Ronald Sleeth for Storrington. John McDougall
and Bill Robinson reclaimed their seats in Portland District while Mark Schjerning and Ross Sutherland took the Loughborough spots formerly held by Vandewal and McPhail. Incumbent Suzanne Ruttan also reclaimed her School Board Trustee spot for the Limestone Board and Wendy Procter claimed the Trustee spot for the Algonquin Board.

Frances Smith defeats incumbent Gutowski in Central Frontenac for mayor Continued from page 1
In District 3 (Olden) one seat was vacant due to Frances Smith’s Mayoralty bid but incumbent Coun. Wayne Millar failed to hold on to his, falling to former Mayor Bill MacDonald and newcomer Sherry Whan. In the race for Limestone District School Board, Karen McGregor defeated Steve Magee and David Kendall in a landslide, 2,748 votes to 1,057 and 994. That seat had been held by Ann Goodfellow for many years. After a very short display of jubilance, new Mayor Smith’s thoughts turned quickly to the job ahead.

“This is going to be a lot of work with all the new people,” she said. “But I am looking forward to it. “I was afraid we wouldn’t have a lot of new ideas but it looks like we will now. “I want to hear all of the councilors around the table talk and will do everything I can to encourage that.” For her part, Gutowski was gracious and philosophical in defeat. “C’est la vie,” she said. “I’ve done my best and I’m happy with what the community accomplished during my terms. “I look forward to looking for a new challenge and wish Frances and her Council all the best.”

Gazette News — When Central Frontenac Mayor-elect Frances Smith chairs her first meeting in December, there won’t be a lot of familiar faces around the Council table, at least in terms of returning councilors. District 1 (Kennebec) Coun. Tom Dewey will be back, as will District 4 (Hinchinbrooke) Coun. Phillip Smith. That’s it. Coun. John Purdon (District 2 Olden), Jeff Matson (Kennebec), Wayne Millar (District 3 Oso) and Heather Fox (Hinchinbrooke) all went down to defeat in last week’s Central Frontenac Municipal Election. Coun. Norm Gutensperger (Olden) did not seek reelection. The new Council looks like this: • Mayor Frances Smith • Kennebec Coun. Tom Dewey (386 votes) and Cindy Kelsey (375 votes) • Olden Coun. Jamie Riddell (309 votes) and Victor Heese (291 votes) • Oso Coun. Bill MacDonald (508 votes) and Sherry Whan (388 votes) • Hinchinbrooke Coun. Phillip Smith (349 votes) and Brent Cameron (334 votes) The voter turnout, at 41.9 per cent, was almost 10 points higher than the previous election (32 per cent) and it would certainly appear the voters wanted change, a fact not lost on the winning (or losing) candidates. “That’s what happens, the voters decide,â€? said Purdon, who came third with 224 votes. “Now I’ll be able to officially retire.â€? “Through all the all-candidates meetings, people said they wanted to see change,â€? said
Riddell. “But I’m still in awe. “It is good to see a number of younger people on Council now. “What will be will be, said Fox, who was also third in her district with 320 votes. “Everything happens for a reason. “I gave it four years and now it’s somebody else’s turn. “I’m obviously happy with the results, said Cameron. “The future of Piccadilly Hall and the fire hall will be top of my agenda. “I guess the people didn’t want me, said Matson, also third in his district with 355 votes. “But they (Council) will hear from me. “I’m a little surprised, but I think we have a good group to work with, said Phillip Smith. “It’s good to see more people running, said Justin Gray, who came in fifth in Olden with 112 votes. “I’ve known Jamie a long time and I think they (Riddell and Heese) are well qualified. “I have a lot of respect for those two. “I’m very pleasantly surprised, said Whan. “I had amazing support. “I can breathe now, said Heese. “It’s been a long campaign, but rewarding. There will also be a change at Limestone District School Board Trustee where Karen McGregor’s 2,748 votes easily outdistanced Steve Magee’s 1,057 and David Kendall’s 994. “I’m very happy, said McGregor, who was clearly spent by the time the numbers came in. “I’m so relieved we got the numbers from North Frontenac and Addington Highlands because I was afraid I’d have to wait longer.

That’s why it’s so important that we move the ENT clinics from their current crowded quarters in an 1800s building to a larger, more accessible space within Hotel Dieu Hospital, where the amazing team who provide ENT care will be able to provide more timely access to care in a barrier-free environment that is built to support high-tech equipment. Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, November 6, 2014 5
Frontenac Council passes Official Plan, now awaiting Ministry approval Gazette News — After more than two years in the making, the Frontenac County Official Plan (OP), is off to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for final approval. Frontenac County Council approved the third draft (with revisions) at a special Council meeting last week in Glenburnie. Once the OP is approved by the Ministry, Frontenac County will become the approval authority for all development in the County, eliminating the need for Ministry approval as had been the case up
until now. “This was 150 years in the making,” said Warden Denis Doyle, referring to the upcoming 150th anniversary of the creation of Frontenac County. “I think we should expect approval sometime around February (of 2015).” The OP has not been without its share of controversy. At a public meeting Sept. 22 in Verona, 14 speakers disagreed with some or all of the document. Of these, a semi-official contingent from the Township of South Frontenac raised the most concerns, chiefly those of Planner/ Dep. Clerk Lindsay Mills, who worried that use of the words “will” and “shall”
in some sections would severely hamper the Township’s ability to conduct its own affairs, arguing that the words “may,” “could” or “might” should be the preferred language. At the next County Council meeting, Planner/Manager of Sustainability Joe Gallivan, the primary author of the document, recommended a meeting with the four Township CAOs, Mills, County staff and Ministry officials to voice South Frontenac’s concerns and get Ministry response direct from Ministry staff, rather than hearing it second-hand from Gallivan. Gallivan praised the efforts of County

CAO Kelly Pender and South Frontenac CAO Wayne Orr for “paring it down to five issues,” which were dealt with at the Oct. 23 meeting. Specifically, the five areas discussed were: • Fish Habitat (Section 7.1.4.4.1) • Waterfront areas (Section 3.3.3.4.1) • Built Resources (Section 2.2.1(a) • Agriculture — Value-Added Uses (Section 2.1.1.3) • Waterfront Area policies — 30-metre setback (Section 3.3.3.4.4(7) (The entire OP document, as well as the specific changes, is available on the Frontenac County website, as attachments R0012978050

to the agenda of the Oct. 29 special meeting.) South Frontenac Mayor Gary Davison was satisfied that his Township’s concerns were addressed and dealt with. “I raised the issue and want to say that we were never ‘against’ it (the OP),” Davison said. “We were just concerned that some of the wording was prescriptive. “We’re happy with the outcome, not just for South Frontenac but for the entire County because this will affect all of us.” “After the discussions with the Ministry, I’m confident they understand Council’s concerns,” said Gallivan. “I’m confident it (the OP) will be approved.” Pender described the meeting between planners, CAOs and Ministry representatives Mike Elms and Karen Currie as “collegial and professional once we got down to the five issues.” Pender said that OPs are the vision of (County) Council but must meet the needs of the local municipalities as well as the requirements of the Provincial Policy Statement. “The County is the one in the middle,” he said.

In Our Opinion
There is nothing so consistent as change, and this election was no exception to that rule Craig Bakay Reporter
editorial@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Column — Well, if the voters in Central and South Frontenac Townships wanted change, they certainly got it in the 2014 Municipal Election. In the two townships, there are 18 council seats including the mayors (nine each township). Of those 18 seats, only five will be filled with returning members (two in Central— Tom Dewey and Phillip Smith — and three in South — John McDougall, Bill Robinson and Pat Barr.) Granted, the two new mayors, Frances Smith in Central and Ron Vandewal in South, have been councilors for years, and Smith has been reeve before. But still, it’s a new job for each of them and with a whole slate of rookies to contend with, things will likely be, shall we use the word “confusing, for the next little while. Each of the new mayors will
have at least one new experienced councilor. Smith will have former Mayor Bill McDonald on her council and Vandewal will have former Storrington reeve Ron Sleeth, but this could be a double-edged sword. Both of these old warhorses bring a wealth of experience but they may have difficulty adjusting to the fact that they’re not in charge this time around. Human nature will prevail regardless of circumstance. Central in particular will suffer at least initially from the loss of John Purdon’s attention to detail and Jeff Matson’s knowledge of equipment and materials. But, at least there seemed to be no shortage of enthusiasm amongst those who did get elected. ••• And one last thing. The electronic voting system seemed to work quite well, especially in terms of timeliness. Those of us accustomed to allevening marathons of vote-tallying welcome getting results within an hour of the polls closing (it was 48 minutes in Central). It also turned out to be an extremely useful tool

for candidates to see who had voted and then make phone calls to their supporters who hadn’t encouraging them to make the phone call or go online and cast their vote. As an old-time scrutineer who spent many an election day relaying that information from polling stations to candidates, I can tell you this is a better system — at least for the candidates who were savvy enough to take advantage of it. But, you have to wonder if security might be an issue. Since all someone really needs now to vote is a PIN, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to speculate that there’s at least a possibility someone might surrender theirs to a candidate or their representative to vote for them (not that any of our upstanding candidates would even consider it). Granted, if there seemed to be an inordinate number of votes coming from one IP address, red flags would likely be raised, but there are such things as proxy servers to mask IP addresses and if an old hacker like me can figure that out, just think of what some young computer whizkid might be able to come up with.

Voter turnout still unacceptable
Gazette Editorial – What will it take to make people exercise their right to vote? The recent municipal elections made it easier than ever to vote. Many municipalities introduced phone and/or internet voting and yet there were still appallingly low voter turnout numbers across the province. In the five municipalities our papers cover, numbers improved, but not by much. In terms of percentage Kingston saw 42 per cent of eligible votes cast a vote. That was with a tight mayoral race and the all important casino question on the ballot. In the other local municipalities, the Frontenac Islands saw the highest voter turnout with 67 per cent while Central Frontenac saw 41 per cent and South Frontenac 37 per cent. The lowest voter turnout in our area was in Loyalist Township, where only 33 per cent of voters participated. Sadly, these numbers are not out of the ordinary and many municipalities across Ontario fell well below the 50 per cent mark. So what can we do to improve voter turnout? This question has been asked time and time again and many have suggested changing out electoral system so that a winner cannot be decided until 50 per cent of the eligible voters have cast a vote. In that scenario, many also suggest that the winner should have to receive at least half of those votes or 25 per cent. Certainly an interesting suggestion, but perhaps we need something even more drastic. In some countries voting is compulsory. Since 1924, voting in Australia has been compulsory for citizens 18 years and above. Eligible voters are required to go to a polling station, receive a ballot, take it to a box and mark it before folding it and putting it in the ballot box. In this case, if a person chooses to spoil their ballot by not marking next to a name they can do so, but the paper must be marked in some way. At the 2010 Tasmanian state election, about 6,000 people were fined $26 for not voting. While this method certainly isn’t perfect, it does encourage voters to cast a vote. Perhaps this type of system is something we should consider, especially since nothing else seems to be working.

Godfrey operation about more than just restoring old cars By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — Rick Law’s workshop is a rather amazing place. Amidst the antique metal signs, the various tools and accouterments of the auto restoration business and the more-than-a-century-old

wood the building is made of, two sculptures by neighbouring artist Stefan Duerst await final coats of paint. At one end, there’s a TR3 in the beginning stages of restoration. At the other, a minivan sits in anticipation of new rocker panels and some work on a rusting tailgate.
Each will be dealt with in turn, be it 3 p.m. or four in the morning. This is RL Classic Lawless Paints in Godfrey. Two years ago, Law, who had been living on St. Andrew’s Lake, moved his Kingston operation to the corner of Road 38 and Westport Road. And he’s not about to look

back. “This place made a lot of sense,” he says. “It’s a booming corner (McGowan’s store/gas bar and L. D. Power Sports are just across Road 38). “It required a lot of reviving when I bought it at auction, but it wasn’t as bad as some people thought. “I had to get it to where I could start working.” ‘Working’ for Law involved a number of things, it turns out. Essentially, it’s a restoration and auto body repair shop but that doesn’t really begin to cover it. “I’ll restore anything from a Coke cooler (one stands in the corner, waiting its turn) to a horse trailer,” he said. “But I do insurance work and a lot of custom motorcycle painting — skulls and flames. “I’m constantly booked.” But that’s only the half of it. Law acquired the property from the Howes family, who had operated a store there a generation or so ago. The building still features the rough-hewn joists and boards that were probably original equipment when it was built in the
1880s. During the K & P Railway’s heyday, there was a train station on the north side of Westport Road (he owns that property too). The store was a roadhouse at one time, as well as a grain repository. Law is very mindful of the area’s history and a big part of his plan is restoring it to some semblance of its former glory. “I’d like to bring this corner back to life,” he said. “It’s really important to me. “The community has been great, very supportive and I’m the happiest here I’ve ever been in my life.” So, it’s been a two-year cycle of “build/fix, build/fix” but even when he gets the building and grounds to where he wants them, he won’t be done. “Come hell or high water, there will be a coffee house where the store was,” he said. “That won’t be for profit necessarily, it’ll be more for the community. “It’s really important to me that everybody understand how important this area is to me “(And) I like when people smile and are happy.”

Bill Murray thrives as St. Vincent By Mark Haskins
Entertainment - An alcoholic, bitter, old man babysits a young boy after school. It sounds like the kind of typical outrageous comedy Hollywood is so fond of. St. Vincent is anything but typical. On the surface Vincent (Bill Murray) is a cantankerous old man. He doesn’t like people and people generally don’t like him. If you look beneath the surface you’ll see a deeply flawed individual. Vincent drinks too much, gambles too much, swears too much, and is angry most of the time. It makes one wonder why Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) lets Vincent look after her son Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher). To be fair Maggie doesn’t have a lot of options. She and Oliver have moved into the house next to Vincent because she left her cheating husband. She has to work a lot, and with Oliver starting at a new school things aren’t easy. Maggie was a little desperate to find someone to watch Oliver after school, and Vincent was a little desperate for the money. Strangely Oliver and Vincent bond. Vincent takes Oliver to the track, the bar, and teaches him how to fight. He introduces Oliver to
Daka (Naomi Watts), the pregnant prostitute with whom he spends his Tuesdays. In turn Oliver seems to be the only friend Vincent has. It’s Oliver who’s able to look past the surface, and all the flaws, and see the saint underneath. St. Vincent asks what makes a saint a saint. The film goes on to an-

perfect. I would imagine it’s not easy to play a pregnant prostitute whose best costumer is someone like Vincent. Yet Naomi Watts pulls it off with a grace and humour that really shines. It’s always a risk for an actor to break type and do something different from what their fans expect. Melissa McCarthy takes that risk and it pays off huge. Chris O’Dowd plays Brother Geraghty. As a priest and Oliver’s teacher he brilliantly provides both wisdom and humour. It’s amazing to see someone so young deliver such a moving and compelling performance. Jaeden Lieberher is an outstanding young talent. His chemistry with Murray is phenomenal, and his connection with the audience is incredible. Bill Murray inhabits this role as only Bill Murray can. Vincent is both uncomplicated and complicated. Murray throws his entire being into this role, and gives one of the most sensitive, funny and heartwarming performances of his career. St. Vincent is a fascinating character and a fascinating film. Mark Haskinsí column is a regular feature.

Frontenac Islands 67% Voter Turnout Exceeds Expectations By Margaret Knott Correspondent
Gazette News – The Township of Frontenac Islands, made up of 2,201 eligible voters, had a 66.7% (1, 467) voter turnout from Howe, Simcoe and Wolfe Islands. Very high, and probably the highest, as compared to any other township or city. The largest part of the voting was made by way of internet/telephone. Frontenac Islands was one of the only townships also
providing paper ballot voting. Frontenac Islands’ CAO Darlene Plumley, responsible for the voting process was well pleased with it. “It was amazing and we finished so quickly ,” she said. “One thing that was disappointing was that a number of voters coming to mark a ballot did not bring their PIN number with them and we had to verify who they were and that their PIN had not been used, which caused some delay. As well here on Wolfe Island, we needed to use two different areas to complete the voting process causing another delay”

and she added “I have never seen so many scrutineers” . Some might say the results were predictable with the incumbents returned to office. However that would not be true. All of the candidates campaigned hard and mightily, expectations were high and signs were plentiful. Returned to office was Mayor Denis Doyle, and Councillors Barbara Springgay and Wayne Grant from Wolfe Island, and from Howe Island Councillors Natalie Nossal and David Jones. Doyle was returned with 1184 votes. Mayoral candidate Mike Bromley received 262 votes.
A lively contest took place between councillor candidates on Wolfe Island where three new candidates ran against the 2 Incumbent’s politicians: Councillor Grant who received 527 votes and Councillor Springgay with 515. Also running Chad Hulton with 403 votes; Yarda Zborovsky (377); Doug Franks (70) . The WI Pub & Pizzeria was filled with islanders and candidates waiting to hear results, sharing stories and the excitement of the evening. Election over, by early next morning every campaign sign was gone. Councillor Springgay has begun looking ahead setting her sights on the po-

If there was an upset, it was at Howe Island where Councillor-elect Nossal achieved more votes than Councillor David Jones. Councillor Jones who is presently serving as Deputy Mayor of Frontenac Islands and, as a representative at the Frontenac County table, received 257 votes. Councillor candidate Plisak received 106 votes. Nossal was appointed to fill the position of councillor for Howe Island when Pat Norris retired before completing his term of office. She received 354 votes in this, her first election. With the highest number of votes Councillor Nossal will assume the role of Deputy Mayor of Frontenac Islands and Frontenac County representative. Remember those who fought for our freedom and those who continue to fight! Give pause on Remembrance Day Throughout history, millions of soldiers have marched into wars to protect the freedoms of their countries. Remembrance Day is a solemn time to commemorate those soldiers’ achievements and sacrifices and to pay respects to soldiers who died in battle. In the United States, people honor their present and past military on Veterans’ Day. In British commonwealth countries and territories, including Canada, November 11 is known as Remembrance Day. Since the end of World War I, memorials to remember those of the armed forces who fought in battle and perished in the line of duty have been dedicated on this day. Armistice Day origins Remembrance Day was once known as Armistice Day because it marks the signing of the armistice that put an end to the hostilities of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, guns fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare between
the Germans and Allied troops. The armistice agreement was signed in a French train carriage at 11 a.m. Later, the carriage where the historic event took place was placed in a specially constructed building to serve as a monument to the defeat of Germany. Although it was moved by German forces and later destroyed during World War II, after that war ended a replacement carriage, correct in every detail, was rededicated on Armistice Day in 1950. Remembrance Day evolution Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day after World War II to commemorate soldiers from both world wars. It is now used as a way to pay hommage to any fallen soldier. Each year a national ceremony takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, a monument erected as a memorial to soldiers buried elsewhere. The Queen will lay the first wreath at the Cenotaph, while others will leave wreaths and small wooden crosses. In Canada, Remembrance Day is
14 The Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, November 6, 2014
a statutory holiday in many provinces and territories. Official national ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Events begin with the tolling of the Carillon in the Peace Tower, during which members of the Canadian Forces participate and congregate at Confederation Square. Similar ceremonies take place in provincial capitals across the country. Very often moments of silence are offered for lost lives. What about the poppies? One of the unifying symbols of Remembrance Day is the poppy that is worn to honor lost soldiers. The bold, red color of the flower has become an enduring symbol of those who died so that others may be free. The poppy became a symbol for a specific reason. Some of the most concentrated and bloody fighting of World War I took place in Flanders, a region in western Belgium. As a result of the fighting, most signs of natural life had been obliterated from the region, leaving behind mud and not
much else. The only living thing to survive was the poppy flower, which bloomed with the coming of the warm weather the year after fighting in the region had ceased. Poppies grow in disturbed soil and can lie dormant in the ground without germinating. Without the war, they may have never come to the surface. John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved by the vision of poppies flowering in Flanders and wrote a poem titled “In Flanders Fields.” After the poem
was published, it received international acclaim, and the poppy became a popular symbol of those lost in battle. Men traditionally wear the poppy on the left side of the chest, where a military medal would be placed. Women wear it on the right side because that is where a widow would wear her husband’s medals. Remembrance Day is celebrated every year, providing people humbled by the sacrifices of soldiers an opportunity to remember those soldiers’ efforts to secure freedom.

Lest We Forget OVER 40 YEARS OF COMPLETE AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE
How We Remember One of the most memorable times Richard and I had remembering Canadian servicemen and women was when we were stationed with the British Royal Air Force at Northwood Headquarters in England, United Kingdom. We were fortunate enough to have been invited on a PSP trip to Shorncliffe Cemetery for a very special ceremony. Shorncliffe Cemetery is where a number of Canadian Military establishments were centred during the First World War. On three occasions Canadian soldiers were killed during air raids on Shorncliffe. During the ceremony, I witnessed one of the saddest and most beautiful moments in my life. Amongst the proud and serving military members, veterans and families, school children came and all knelt in front of a grave and proceeded to lay flowers. To this day, it brings tears to my eyes. It was so quiet; you could feel all the
emotions in the air. After the ceremony, we were embraced by the veterans who had organized a wonderful luncheon. We shared hot drinks, ate sandwiches and they told us stories of their time serving. We both will never forget that day. Another very special Remembrance Day took us to Brookwood Cemetery in Ottawa. At the time we had only 1 of our 3 children and my mother was visiting from N.S. Of course it was raining, like so many other Remembrance Days. We spent the day chatting with other families after a lovely ceremony. Downtown Ottawa, in front of the Parliament building is where we spent Remembrance Day in 2007. It was so crowded we could barely move. After the cemetery we got out of the rain and spent some time in a cafe with our 1 year old son. We always try and remember those before us and how lucky we are to live in Canada.
16 The Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, November 6, 2014
For the past few years, we enjoy a special ceremony at our children’s school, St. Martha Catholic School. It is so nice to see the children’s beautiful art work and poems. The hallways and gym are filled with pictures, dedications and thankyous to our military men, women and families. The children light candles, carry wreaths to the front of the gym, pray and tell us what they know and learn about Remembrance Day. One of the former students, a young songwriter, wrote a song for the military members and families, which she sings while playing her guitar. All of the military members, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts join the students and staff and come together to remember those who served. It is a meaningful way to spend Remembrance Day. God Bless and thank you to all past and present military men, women and families. Mrs. Stephanie Van Der Pryt

Hip hopping for Easter Seals four years ago when I became infatuated with roller derby. Some of you might remember that I actually took part in the Kingston Derby Girls “fresh meat” camp back in 2012. I was terrible at it and terrified pretty much the entire time, but I will forever remember it as being a great experience, which allowed me to learn new skills, expand my horizons and meet some great friends.

My next challenge is certainly less *hazardous* than roller derby. I’m unlikely, for instance, to end up with a concussion or broken leg. Still, it’s probably the most terrifying thing I’ve ever signed up for. You see, back in the spring I was asked if I would take part in the annual Easter Seals Dancing With the Stars fundraiser. I immediately said yes, of course I would. Easter Seals, which helps provide equipment and services for local children with physical disabilities, is a fantastic charity. Plus, this would give me another opportunity to try something brand new. I have never danced before (well, other than at weddings and other places where alcohol consumption has been a factor), and have always been interested in learning. The deal is that each “star” gets eight hour-long lessons with a professional dancer, leading up to a performance at a swanky fundraiser dinner in front of family, friends and other supporters. Initially, I pictured myself living out my girlhood Dirty Dancing fantasy of fast becoming an expert at spinning, cha chaing and being lifted into the air by a hunky Patrick Swayze lookalike.
So I was a little surprised when the Easter Seals fundraising coordinator, Jessica, asked if I would mind being paired with a female partner. “Of course not,” I said, and began imagining spinning around the dance floor with a woman. Lifts are probably out, I thought, but otherwise my fantasy remained pretty much intact. I was in for another surprise when I learned that we would be dancing hip hop. (Well, actually I was presented with either hip hop or “contemporary”, the latter of which seemed a bit strange and even more beyond my capabilities.) So hip hop we settled on, and I was paired with a lovely young woman named Randi Kyle, who teaches at the local studio TK Danceworx and has performed on stages around the world. At the time of writing we’re still quite early into our lessons, but I would say things are going about as well as can be expected. Hip hop is definitely harder than it looks. There are a lot of steps and it’s easy to get flustered trying to remember what’s next - not to mention doing the moves well and in sync with Randi. But who knows? Maybe being two hip hop chicks amongst more classical, ballroom-style per-

formers will give us an edge over the other “stars”. One thing’s for sure: we’ll certainly stand out. So far, Randi and I have raised $590 for Easter Seals through online voting. If we meet our goal of $2,000, we will have earned enough to send one child to Camp Merrywood on Big Rideau Lake, a very special place that allows children with physical disabilities to have the full summer camp experience. You can vote for us by making a donation at: http://www. easterseals.org/dancing/kingstondancing-with-easter-seals-stars It’s looking like I’ll be able to fill at least one table of supporters on the night of the fundraiser - but of course I could always use as many as possible! It takes place Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton. Tickets are $125 per person, or $900 for a table of eight. It’s not cheap, but you do get a lovely meal and wine, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of seeing me try to dance hip hop.
Mayor thanks Islanders for their support Correspondent
R0022975187
Gazette News – Following the recent Municipal Election, Frontenac Islands Mayor Denis Doyle expressed his thanks to residents. ‘I would like to thank all residents across the Islands for their participation in the democratic process, with an amazing 67% of eligible voters casting a vote, and returning me as Mayor with 82% of the vote . It is proof of a high level of interest in local government with 10 people running for the five positions on Council here.. Not the case in other places where very few and in some cases, no one ran and voter percentages were at about 40%, he said. Mayor Doyle also expressed his pleasure with the candidates and what he heard from them at ‘All Candidates’ meetings . “Although you may have been unsuccessful this time I would suggest you keep your signs as four years will go by very quickly.
Doyle said that he and the other four members of council will get on with providing good government for the islands . “The top priority is ‘Ferry Transportation’ followed by roads and community building programs such as parks, water access, recreation, health, seniors etc. We will see what we can afford to do and develop a strategic plan for the next 4 years taking into account the suggestions we heard campaigning. Regarding Frontenac County, Mayor Doyle said there is a realization that three or four priorities is all they can handle. “As Warden I will continue to focus on seniors housing, transportation, waste management, and financial stewardship, including economic development, in an effort to bring in more tax revenue. Over the years I have concluded that lobbying the province for support on a regional level is much more effective than meeting separately with Ministers. Doyle said that he gained the
helpful support of Mayor Gerretsen and Kingston City Council for a 2nd ferry at a meeting in 2011, and has already reached out to Mayor elect Bryan Patterson suggesting they work as a region on various activities, such as Waste Manage-

DAYTRIPPER
Urbansteading: old ways are new again Columnist
Gazette Daytripper – Three years ago, Trish Morris started making cheese kits as Christmas gifts. She put together the things people would need to make their own cheese at home. The kits were so popular that recipients asked Morris why she wasn’t selling them on her own. “It grew from there,” said Morris. “I started selling at markets and expanded into different kinds of cheese. Now we’ve gotten more into homesteading.” The efforts became Urbansteading. Morris joined forces with Adele Webster. “Our daughters were at school together,” said Webster. “We met and discovered a mutual interest in essential oils.” Morris takes care of product development for Urbansteading, and Webster focuses on brand development. For Morris, it all started when she was five years old and helping out in her grandmother’s kitchen. “My grandmother owned a lodge,” she said. “From the time I was five, I was making bread and doing everything from scratch. Grandma was a herbologist, and I try to do things naturally first, instead of running to a drug store.” Morris has been a chef for 11 years and has served as the Community Food Advisor through the Public Health Department in Kingston.
“It was eye-opening for the community and its link to food,” she said. “The whole program stems around connecting people. We have such resources in this region. You can get everything you want locally. You really don’t have to go very far. I do a lot of one-on-one. I did a baby food program, teaching moms how to make their own baby food.” Adele Webster has been a graphic designer for more than 18 years in the Kingston region. She’s worked in daily and weekly newspapers (including The Kingston Heritage and Frontenac Gazette) and has worked with such organizations as Pumpkinferno at Upper Canada Village and the Kingston Frontenacs. Like, Morris, Webster has always felt a connection to healthy foods and lifestyle. “As a kid, I worked at a veggie and fruit stand,” she said. “That kind of connection brought me to Trish and learning about essential oils. Trish teaches a medicine cabinet makeover, where people learn to replace the drugs with natural things.” What started as reconnecting people to local and healthy food sources has expanded into apothecary with things like a cold and flu kit that includes natural bath soaks and chest rubs for colds. “It gives parents a little more control and helps them combat sickness,” said Morris. There is also a Detox and Renew kit and a Rest and Sleep kit. They’ll be launching

the programs. “In the Medicine Cabinet Makeover workshop, people learn how to replace the basics like Vicks rub and ibuprofen with things like peppermint and rosemary. There are great resources of different oils you can combine. Migraine relief is a big issue. So are arthritis and tummy upsets. It’s so ingrained in people to run for the drugs when you don’t feel well.” Morris was concerned enough about our culture’s overemphasis on drugs that she moved beyond her chef role. “That’s where I became a health coach on top of the personal chef,” she said.
