Central Frontenac Council members say good-bye By Craig Bakay reporter

Gazette News — The mood was considerably jovial as the current incarnation of Central Frontenac Council held what was likely to be its final meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Only three of the current Council (Mayor-Elect Frances Smith, Coun. Tom Dewey and Coun. Phillip Smith) will be returning when the newly elected Council holds its first meeting Dec. 9. The current Council did have a meeting scheduled for Nov. 25 but barring any major developments in the Township that would need to be dealt with immediately, Council decided there wouldn’t be much point in a second meeting for November 2014. And so, the departing Council members said their ‘buh-byes.’ “Thank you for the opportunity,” said Coun. John Purdon, after eight years on Council. “It’s been a good ride as far as I’m concerned. “I was thinking of retiring and the voters told me it was time, so . . . Freedom 70!” “All I can say is ‘welcome to Wal-Mart . . . you want a buggy?’” said Coun. Wayne Millar. “It’s different going from employee to councilor,” said Coun. Heather Fox, who was Clerk/CAO for the newly amalgamated Township of Central Frontenac. “I’m not sure which side of the table I prefer. “But to the new mayor . . . don’t expect too There was a large crowd in attendance for Remembrance Day Services at the cenotaph in much too soon.” “Well, eight years ago, I didn’t expect to be here Sydenham on Nov. 11. Photo/John Harman this long,” said Coun. Jeff Matson. “At least the

Sydenham remembers

press hasn’t dragged my name through the mud.” “I never expected to move here and end up in the mayor’s chair,” said outgoing Mayor Janet Gutowski. “I’m sure I’ll find a way to stay involved in community service because that’s where my passion lies. “Yes, there were a lot of staff changes but we accomplished a lot too.” Frances Smith isn’t really going anywhere but she will be taking the mayor’s chair instead of being an Oso District representative. “I’m going to miss (the outgoing councilors),” said Smith. “It will be an interesting and no doubt trying four years, just like the previous four years and the four years before that. “And the 40 years before that.” Dep. Clerk/Planner Cathy MacMunn used the opportunity to present some statistics from the Municipal Election, the first time Central had gone totally electronic. The Web was the vehicle of choice for 61.7 per cent of voters, 38.3 per cent used the telephone. Of those who voted, 64.9 per cent were residents (2,011 voters) and 35.1 per cent were nonresidents (1,089). Non-resident votes came from a variety of places, six per cent (187 voters) from seven Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Quebec and Yukon), one per cent from 12 US states (33 voters from Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee). 170cast within16” bar, 30.1cc There were alsoMS votes Australia, Ireland Reg. $279.95 and Great Britain.

Acting Clerk/CAO Steve Silver said this change, to recognize the hours the officiant spends in preparation, meetings, rehearsals and vow recital practice, wouldn’t represent a loss to the Township because it is not a budget line item.

Gazette News — Back in the day when the newly amalgamated Township of Central Frontenac decided to provide marriage ceremony services, it was essentially a matter of providing options. Coun. Heather Fox, who was Clerk/CAO in those days, was the person that actually performed the ceremonies. “Back then, if you didn’t want a church wedding, you really didn’t have anywhere else to go, she told Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. “Rates were low because the Council at the time felt it was a service that should be provided. “And because there was no cost to the Township. Fox said she performed 12 weddings, everything from a basic ceremony in the office to full-blown affairs. “The first one was a couple from Toronto that couldn’t get services there, Fox said. “But there was also a big wedding . . . the dresses were just stunning. When Fox retired from the clerk’s post, the job of marrying folks fell to Dep. Clerk Cathy MacMunn, albeit not for awhile. “Heather did it, then nobody did it, said MacMunn. “Then (Clerk/CAO) Shawn

Trepanier was interested in continuing the service and then (Clerk/CAO) Larry Donaldson delegated me to be the officiate. Since then, MacMunn has officiated at 14 weddings, held in a variety of venues. Coun. John Purdon noted that 14 weddings represented a fair amount of MacMunn’s time. “One or two a year is not a big issue, Purdon said. “But 14 is something else. “It takes up the time of a staff member. Purdon also pointed out that in the Township’s employee agreement, there is no provision for overtime payment, only time off in lieu. “We say no payment, but this is a form of overtime, Purdon said. “This issue has to be dealt with. So, MacMunn started looking around at how townships handle it. Purdon too looked around and found out procedures and fees are all over the map. “It seems Drummond North Helmsley will do marriages any time, anywhere, Purdon said. “Prince Edward County only does them on the second and fourth Fridays of the month between 1 and 3 p.m. “And then there are those who issue licenses only. MacMunn put together a proposed bylaw based on the Drummond North Helmsley

Gazette News — There will be an open house from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight (Nov. 20) at Oso Hall in Sharbot Lake to discuss options for replacement of the former railway crossing on Road 38 in Sharbot Lake. Public Works Coordinator Kyle Labbett said the crossing has to be dealt with in the next five years, be it repair, removal, box culvert or some other option. Coun. John Purdon suggested inviting representatives of the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance and/or Frontenac County for their input since the former rail bed has become a multi-use trail (Harold Clark Trail). Labbett said he’d contacted the EOTA people and “they’re OK with whatever we want to do.” “I wouldn’t think they’d be OK with a level crossing,” said Purdon. “No, they’re OK with that if that’s what we decide,” Labbett said. “I’ve crossed busier roads

Flippin’ fiddler returns to Kingston for a night of Christmas fun mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette Events – Holiday music is infectious, especially when it is played on a fiddle - or at least that is what Scott Woods thinks. Woods has been fiddling since the age of four with his father and siblings. He has won numerous championships with his fiddling skills over the years and in 2004 he decided to take his skills on tour and started travelling across Canada to help charitable organizations. “I started doing charitable concerts soon after my dad passed away in

2003,” explained Woods. “I wanted to play and raise money for people that wanted to make a difference.” Woods plays at churches, legions, community centres and various other venues across the country throughout the year and each show benefits a cause. Woods makes very little profit from the shows and only asks that he receive enough money to cover the hard costs of putting on the show and travelling there; the rest of the money goes to the organizations. “It really is appealing for groups that find it difficult to fundraise because of capital. They don’t have to spend a lot of money to raise

money and I really enjoy helping them out.” Over the years, this formula has become more and more popular and Woods now finds it hard to keep up with demand. “The supply of dates that we have is far less than the demand that we get for shows across the country,” he said. “It has been a full time gig for me since about 2004.” On Nov. 25, Woods and his accompanying acts will make a stop in Kingston. The show is being put on by the Kingston Odd Fellows and Rebekahs with proceeds supporting Camp Trillium. Woods always enjoys

stopping in Kingston and interacting with the fiddle friendly community. “The Kingston fiddle club has been very supportive and there is a strong fiddle and bluegrass community in Kingston and the surrounding areas,” he explained. “The crowds are very responsive in Kingston and we get great participation and energy every time we come.” The crowd is the best part for Woods. He loves seeing the reactions when he plays certain songs and he often hears stories about the songs after the shows. “We get people coming up to us telling us they haven’t heard the song in 30 years or that their grandfathers used to play it for them and do a jig in the kitchen.” Many of the songs are quite old, but Woods likes to mix in some more current pieces to keep things moving. At the Christmas shows he will also be playing some carols and classic holiday tunes. “We offer something for everyone. You don’t have to be a fiddle fan to

come out and enjoy the show. It is very family friendly and we throw in a lot of humour and corny jokes and the seniors and kids always love that.” Woods also does some trick fiddling at the end of each show. Over the years, he has been called the ‘flippin’ fiddler’ because of his back flips and antics on stage “I love to do it for the crowd and that is really what the show is all about.” Scott Woods will be performing at the Collins Bay Legion Branch 631, 4034 Bath Road on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets are available at Bob’s Butcher Shops and the Collins Bay Legion.

Arden waste disposal site officially closed, attention turns to Oso site By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — The Arden Waste Site is officially ‘closed’ now, Public Works Coordinator/ Waste Management Supervisor Kyle Labbett told Central Frontenac Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. “It’s closed, the grass is growing there,” he said. “I started that (the Arden closing) just after I got here so it’s a load off my shoulders.” With that site off the plate, Labbett will now be turning his attention towards the other waste disposal sites in the Township, with the closure of the Crow Lake (Oso) site looming large in the not-toodistant future. “The Crow Lake site is coming to its end,” he said. “With a life expectancy of 5-7 years, it will have to be dealt with by the next Council term.” Labbett said there are surveyors at the Oso site right now, and he

expects to have a report on its status “just after Christmas.” In the KPMG report “Review of Options for Waste Management Service Delivery” commissioned by Frontenac County’s public works managers in an effort to integrate whatever services they can to achieve economy of scale savings, the Oso site is scheduled for closure in 2022. (The other active landfill site in Central Frontenac is the Olden site, scheduled for closure in 2027.) The Oso site is currently at 63.74 per cent of its estimated capacity, or 15,698 cubic metres of its 24,629 cubic metres total capacity. (The Olden site is at 53.65 per cent or 19,828 cubic metres of its 36,960 cubic metres total capacity.) But the time it takes a landfill to reach capacity assumes in part a relatively steady rate of usage (and by extension, population). Current subdivision plans could change that within the next Council’s mandate, accelerating the rate at which the

Of the three mainland townships in Frontenac County, Central leads the way by achieving a nearly-70 per cent diversion rate (69.36 per cent) compared with South Frontenac’s 55 per cent and North Frontenac’s

18 per cent. But, it’s likely recycling efforts are reaching their max and further efforts would be subject to diminishing returns. The KPMG report lists several cost saving measures, but none of them relate directly to landfills reaching their capacity, focusing rather on savings possible by combining testing and reporting operations.

Labbett said the Township still has to monitor and test at the Hinchinbrooke transfer site as well as the Wilkinson site, which is no longer accepting waste. “Wilkinson is still registered as an open site,” he said. “Two years ago, I brought forth a business case for making it a transfer site but it was dismissed by Council as being too expensive.”

In Our Opinion

Philae is off on a comet, and we should all take pride in the accomplishment Craig Bakay Reporter

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette Column — Although I remember my parents talking about Sputnik, the first real memory I have about humanity’s exploration of space was John Glenn’s flight aboard Friendship 7. I remember being herded into another classroom at Sir Winston Churchill Public School where they rolled in a large black and white TV so we could all watch “history in the making. I remember discussing it that night with my father, and him correcting me that this was not the first American manned spaceflight. “They had another guy go but he just went straight up and straight back down again, Pop said. (Actually, Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom both made suborbital flights before Glenn, but who’s counting?) At any rate, at six years old, I was already indoctrinated into a world where spaceflight was a reality. As such,

I pretty much took it for granted that we’d be going to the Moon and beyond. Of course, having a father who took me to science fiction movies whenever a new one came out didn’t dissuade that concept either. But it’s funny ‌ when you get older, you start to realize that not only is it a difficult thing to do just to get something into space, but the amount of preparation and logistics involved is staggering. And so, when Philae touched down on Comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko last week, I was totally impressed. Philae is named for an island in Egypt where an obelisk was found. The Rosetta Stone was used to decipher hieroglyphics on said obelisk, which of course is the reason Philae’s mothership is named Rosetta. They were launched March 2, 2004 or 10 ½ years ago. At one point, Rosetta and Philae were 1,000 million kilometres from Earth travelling at 55,000 km/h. Doesn’t that just blow you away? And then they manage to land on a jumbled up bit of rock that’s about a third the size of Manhattan Island. Hell, just finding it was a feat and they

Kanata Kourier-Standard

Kanata Kourier-Standard Arnprior Chronicle-Guide

landed on it. Or, to put it another way, they travelled a billion miles to find something a little larger than Sharbot Lake and landed in the parking lot of Mike Dean’s. Philae itself is about the size of a washing machine and weighs about 200 kilograms on Earth. On the comet, it weighs about a gram. Yes, comets do have gravity, just not a lot of it. When I was a kid, hell even well into my 30s, I would have thought nothing of it. But now, the enormity of what it actually takes to accomplish something like this is more than what my limited brain capacity can process. (Granted, sometimes getting a microwave dinner to come out with the middle not still frozen can be a challenge these days.) But, even though I know I’d never be able to do this sort of thing, there is nevertheless a strange sort of satisfaction being part of the species that did manage it. We may not find much of importance in the grand scheme of things on this comet, although discovery of an amino acid or two would be nice. But even so, it still makes me feel good that we got there. Kudos, Humanity.

How sad is too SAD? Gazette Editorial – Like it or not, winter is coming and for many of us, winter comes with a case of the blues. It is darker, colder and wetter everywhere you look, making it harder to be happy and active; while this is perfectly normal, some of us will experience these symptoms a bit more severely. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is as type of depression that is directly related to the amount of daylight to which people are exposed. It’s usually caused by a drop in serotonin or an imbalance of melatonin in the body. SAD is most common in the late fall and early winter, however it is possible to experience symptoms in the summer months SAD is becoming more and more common in Canada, with an estimated two to three out of every 100 people affected by SAD and about 15 out of every 100 people experiencing less severe symptoms of SAD called the ‘winter blues’. Symptoms specific to winter-onset SAD, sometimes called winter depression, may include irritability, tiredness or low energy, problems getting along with other people, hypersensitivity to rejection, heavy feeling in the arms or legs, oversleeping, appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates and weight gain. While it is normal to have some of these symptoms throughout the winter, it is not normal to feel this way every day. SAD is more common in women that in men and usually begins when people are in their 20s. Elderly people and children are far less likely to experience SAD, but it is possible. As with any mental health disorder, it is very important to pay attention to symptoms and seek treatment as soon as possible. Treatments for SAD range from light therapy, where patients sit by a box that simulates outdoor light, to cognitive behavioural therapy or medication. In many cases, patients are also asked to exercise regularly and let as much daylight into their homes and workplaces as possible. Regular exercise is also recommended. For more information, visit www.cmha.ca and search SAD.

Editorial

To read or not to read: parenting edition Looking to books for solutions on how to raise my daughter has for a long time seemed a little counterintuitive to me. This may come as a surprise, considering what a big fan of books I am, but it’s an opinion I’ve come to from experience. When I was pregnant, I read everything about pregnancy I could get my hands on - from What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Ina May’s Guide to Pregnancy to the comment sections of Babble and Baby Centre articles. After all that, I can honestly say there is nothing I read on the topic of pregnancy that I would really recommend. Seriously, just go to your midwife or doctor appointments, ask the questions you have, listen to their advice and you’ll be fine. Most important, trust your own instincts. I was a nervous wreck of a preg-

nant woman, and I blame all the reading I did - especially the “comments”, which mostly come from uneducated people who think that because they’ve had two or three kids they are therefore experts on everything that could possibly go wrong regarding pregnancy and small children. Experiencing a small amount of spotting? Oh, you’re probably having a miscarriage, go to the hospital now!! Haven’t felt the baby kick in half a day? Call your doctor immediately, your baby could be dead!! I visited the KGH emergency room and/or obstetrics department more than once during my pregnancy, only to be told “go home, crazy lady!” (My paraphrase, not their words.) I also once stayed awake for pretty much an entire night waiting for Summer to kick, which ended with a frantic 3 a.m. call to my midwife. I was so exhausted and upset I don’t think I made a whole lot of sense, but somehow she ended up advising me to have a drink of cold juice. Of course, this woke the baby up and I got the kicks I was looking for.

When all was said and done, I made a fool of myself countless times and probably trimmed at least a few years off my life as a result of those frantic nine months. So when Summer was born, I cancelled my email subscription to Baby Centre and vowed to stay away from books that tell people how to raise their children. Instead, I relied on my own instincts and advice from family and friends. After all, how can someone who has never met me, Steve and Summer know more about how we should raise her than we do? And all those formulaic childrearing “methods” (attachment parenting, etc.) felt so overwhelming. It was hard enough for me to simply make it through the days with an infant. I didn’t need to be fretting about doing her irreparable damage by misinterpreting a cry. Lately, however, I find myself craving some outside advice on a couple of topics. I’m curious about a book called Raising Your Spirited Child. Summer is quite high-energy, a characteristic neither Steve nor I possess. When I

take her to gymnastics, for instance, she’s always the only kid in her class who has trouble listening to instructions and staying with the group. The rest of the children will be obediently walking the balance beam when it’s beam time, and Summer will decide she’d rather jump on the trampoline and dash across the room. I usually spend the majority of the hour either chasing her around the room, or physically restraining her from running over to the equipment when it’s time to listen to instructions. I’m really not sure how to deal with this behaviour since it’s pretty much the opposite of my own character - I’m rather quiet and tend to self-monitor,

perhaps to a fault. I would also love some advice on potty training. Without getting into too much detail, Summer has very little interest in the potty. She’s always been right on or advanced of all the “milestones”, so this sort of thing is new for me. I see her little friends advancing in this area and can’t help but worry just a little. Maybe there’s some really obvious thing I should be doing but don’t know about because I don’t read the books. I’d love to get some of your thoughts on parenting books. Are you a by-the-book kind of parent and if so is there any book in particular that has served you well?

Hand-me-down box contained surprise treasures to the box or what was being taken out of it. Then Emerson asked, “What is it?” Mother said it was a raincoat. I glanced over to the centre of the kitchen floor where all the action was taking place. None of us owned a raincoat, for heaven’s sake. If we got wet walking to or from school, we got wet, and that was the simple truth. Mother held it up. “It looks like it was made for a midget,” Everett said, obviously very relieved it would never fit him. As one, four pairs of eyes left the box and settled on me at the kitchen table. “Oh no,” I wailed, “I’m not wearing that to the Northcote School.” Bad enough that I had to wear boy’s shoes that came from Regina. Mother told me to go over and try it on. It was as black as a boot, and stiff, boy was it stiff, with big silver clips all down the front of it. “Be great for Halloween…too bad it’s over,” Emerson snorted. I prayed on the way over to the pile of clothes that it wouldn’t fit me. Mother fed my arms into the coat, did up the clips and declared it a perfect fit. The inside was exactly like the underside of our oilcloth on the kitchen table. I told her I was smothering in

it. I told her I couldn’t bend my arms. I told her it smelled just like the tires on the Model T. I told her I would rather be caught dead than be seen in something called a raincoat that I’d never even heard of before! As happened so often in my young life, my sister Audrey saved the day by saying I wouldn’t have to worry about it anyway, because winter was just around the corner, and I would soon be in my melton cloth pants and jacket. “Nobody wears a raincoat in the wintertime,” she said. “And by next Spring you will have grown at least a foot, I’d say, and it won’t fit you anyway.” Well, Mother wasn’t about to waste a perfectly good piece of clothing that came in the handme-down box. She hated mice with a passion, and even though everything was battened down in the summer kitchen, like the wood lid on the sauerkraut barrel, and the tin boxes that held frozen pies and cookies, she was never sure the mice couldn’t find a way to invade what would be going into our mouths. The next morning when I went to the summer kitchen to bring in wood for the wood box, as

I did every morning, there was the raincoat draped over the sauerkraut barrel, with the round wood lid squeezed tight on top of it, offering further protection from the field mice which came into the summer kitchen to avoid the outside elements. I would never know if Mother used the raincoat on the barrel because she actually feared a mouse would get into the barrel. Just maybe she figured having to wear boys brown brogues to the Northcote School was punishment enough. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Gazette Lifestyle – ‘The handme-down box had arrived from Regina. At least twice a year, Aunt Lizzie sent the big wood crate that at one time held bulk tea. Always boy’s clothes. She had two sons. Never anything in it for my sister Audrey or me. We didn’t expect anything, so we weren’t disappointed. Well, really, there was sometimes something for me, but it wasn’t anything I looked forward to. It was a small cardboard box, with my name written in ink, and inside were hateful brown laced boy’s brogue shoes. I was the only one they would fit, and I hated them with a passion. Sure enough, there was the cardboard box, right on top of the mounds of hand-medown clothes, that at one time had graced the backs of my very rich cousins out in Regina. Mother had situated herself in front of the box to unpack it one piece at a time. Once, my brothers were allowed this job, but after one glorious, dragged out, bloody fight

over an alpaca sweater, the boys had to sit on the floor while mother took out everything, from Uncle Jack’s well worn suits, felt hats, flatted out from the packing, and men’s shirts of every description. Mother warned my brothers if there was one word of arguing over who got what, the box would have its lid nailed back on and the whole thing dragged out to the summer kitchen! Often Aunt Lizzie would tuck in a piece of new material for Mother, knowing full well it would be put to good use, or there would be one of her purses that looked like it had just come out of the showcase of an elegant store. Audrey and I had settled ourselves at the kitchen table thumbing through Eaton’s catalogue. Father, as usual, not the least bit interested in the box, had moved to the rocking chair by the Findlay Oval with the Family Herald and Weekly Star. Mother, as organized as ever, placed the clothes in matching piles, so there was a heap of sweaters, shirts, odd pants, and an assortment of odds and ends she would find a use for. Nothing was wasted. Audrey and I paid scant attention

Gazette - Frontenac Islands Deputy Mayor David Jones publicly offered a series of unusual apologies to constituents, particularly Howe Islanders whom he represents, and to fellow members of council at the end of their November meeting. Jones is noted for his aggressive and outspoken approach to dealing with issues and demanding answers. At the outset of his presentation it was obvious council members were taken aback but said nothing as Jones concluded his apologies and said, he would not to return to Council for his next term. He referenced many areas in his apologies, local Howe Island issues, Frontenac County services (council-ferry- paramedic) as well as things personal. The recent municipal election and all that surrounded it, including the all candidates meeting, campaigning in the community, specific references to the Frontenac County Paramedic Services, and including certain accusations that he said were made against him personally, apparently brought him to this moment where he was driven to sarcasm in his rhetoric.. results found him in a second place finish for council resulting in his loss of the position as Deputy Mayor of Frontenac Islands as well as a place at the Frontenac County Council table with Mayor Denis Doyle for the next term. As a member of council Jones was a force for improved financial management and information, up grading staffing levels and a focus on Federal Gas Tax monies as well as a on ferry services to Howe Island. Members of council were quiet as Deputy Mayor Jones shook hands around the table before he rushed off to catch the ferry as the meeting ended. What was there to say to someone who is angry with a situation, and has made up his mind to step away. Perhaps a simple Thank You for your service was all that could be said.

Gazette - This years’ Remembrance Day Observance on Wolfe Island saw an ever increasing number of residents, friends and visitors in attendance amid the sea of brilliant red uniforms worn by a large contingent of young men and women from Kingston’s Royal Military College who come annually to participate with us. The formal Wolfe Island observance of Remembrance Day on Wolfe Island began in 1994 when a plaque proposed by resident (then Deputy Reeve) John O’Shea to recognize Islanders who had served Canada in the military was put in place by the Township. Every year since then a Remembrance Day Service has been held, in front of the Wolfe Island Town Hall, this year organized once again by Pat Sanford. The quiet crowd including the Marysville Public and Sacred Heart school children along with the little ones from the Early Years program were welcomed by Ken Keyes followed by ‘In Flanders Fields’ by OCdt. Lauren Van Veen. offered a prayer Rev. Gerry Moore (Trinity Anglican) offered a prayer. Walter Knott ( Sacred Heart) read from the Book of Wisdom. The Reflection was offered by Rev. Mike Bohler (WI United). Island residents Hugh Cowan and Ed Kirk presented the list of known islanders who lost their lives and those who had served Canada and our allies during war, Peace Keeping and peacemaking missions, many of whom were present wearing their

decorations. The Act of Remembrance was offered by Lt. Col. (Retd) Billy Allan. Poems and readings were presented on this occasion by students Brady Fawcett (Marysville) and Will Mullin (Sacred Heart school), and island resident Chad Hulton. A Canadian Moment was read by Liz Crothers. Musician Nancy Mabee played the Last Post and the Reveille. For the second year a Fly Past of four single engine small planes from the Kingston Flying Club piloted by Avery Wagg, Gord Lendrum and Dave Barton and islander Tony Tiefenbach flew overhead. Wreaths were presented by Merchant Navy Veteran Vern Yott; Peace Keeping, Peace Making Veteran Col. (Retd) Jim Calvin and Canadian Forces member Sgt. Jamie Sanford as well by Mayor Denis Doyle, and members of the community representing community organizations and services. Perhaps the most touching presentation was that of the Early Years children coming forward with their wreath accompanied by RMC escorts. Rev. Canon Chris Carr closed the event with prayer and a final blessing. A community reception followed in the WI community Hall where Music was provided by Jen Varga and Nancy Maybee. ‘Tis the season for pewter ornaments By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette News – The holiday season is all about traditions and what could be more traditional than a collectible series of ornaments? For the past 21 years, Downtown

Kingston has been memorializing historic buildings, statues, ships, churches and landmarks across the city with pewter ornaments. This year brings five new ornaments to add to the collection. “You’d think it would get harder over the years but it really doesn’t,” said Jan

When it’s cold out, online activity heats up. Is your internet service ready?

MacDonald, projects manager of marketing for Downtown Kingston. “There are so many amazing buildings and landmarks in Kingston and every year I am surprised that there are five more new and interesting things to feature.” The five ornaments are released on a weekly basis on Mondays, starting Nov. 17 and ending Dec. 15. Ornaments are $8 with proof of purchase totalling $25 or more from downtown Kingston business. “The price hasn’t changed in over 10 years and we really see it as a promotion of the city,” explained MacDonald. “Receipts can be anything from a

grocery store receipt to a dental receipt, as long as it is after Nov. 1.” This year’s ornaments feature The Millan Building (Coffee & Company) on Princess Street, Holy Name of Jesus Parish Church, The J.K. Tett Centre, the 100-year-old ship The Phoebe and, in recognition of the upcoming John A Macdonald Bicentennial, Sir John’s Public House. A committee chooses the ornaments each year, but the public has a lot of say through Facebook, email and the Downtown Kingston website throughout the year. “We have a lot of people who are very interested in the ornaments and they always have suggestions,” said MacDonald. “Anniversaries usually help in making decisions and we usually try to have a church, a boat or statue, a downtown building and a building that relates to Queen’s.” MacDonald is always amazed by the popularity of the ornaments year after year and the number of people that call from across the country looking for them. “We have people who call us in early

November from British Colombia and the East Coast and they want to know what the ornaments are for the year,” said MacDonald. “They buy them every year because they either have family members in Kingston or they used to live in Kingston or they know someone who used to live in Kingston.” The ornaments are limited edition and never repeat - except for City Hall, which has been done twice. MacDonald owns many of the ornaments herself and loves the way they look on a tree year after year. “They are really beautiful and they look really nice on a tree with the lights. They are a lovely gift and a really nice stocking stuffer. They are also a really nice memento of Kingston.” This year the ornaments are available at the Grand Theatre during box office hours, theRogersK-RockCentreduringboxoffice hours and at the Kingston Community Credit Union. Salvation Army launches annual Christmas kettles campaign By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

R0013008589

Gazette News – Few things signify Christmas more than the sound of the big, brass, bell as you enter the mall and the appearance of the red Salvation Army Christmas kettles. This year’s kettle campaign kicked off on Nov. 14 at Cataraqui Town Centre and runs until Dec. 24. The Salvation Army has been running the kettle campaign since 1891 and in 2013, the 2,000 red kettles across Canada raised over 21 million dollars helping over 1.8 million Canadians. Last year in Kingston the 19 kettles across the city brought in just over $260,000 and this year’s goal is to raise even more. “This year’s goal is to raise $277,000,”explained Lieutenant Josh Howard at the launch. “Through the generosity of the people throughout Kingston I am confident that we can reach our goal this year and hopefully we can surpass it.”

Last year the Salvation Army in Kingston helped over 12,000 individuals and over 6,000 families and need is growing each year. “In the year of 2014 we have already seen over 16,000 people helped at both our Rideau Heights and Patrick Street locations,” added Howard. “Unfortunately there are many people in Kingston who are in need of these services on a daily basis and as a community we can come together and support them.” Funding from the kettle campaign in Kingston goes directly to programs run in Kingston. This year funds will go towards providing nutritious meals, emergency food and clothing and will also fund programs for adults and children throughout Kingston. For those that can’t make it to a kettle to donate, donations are accepted online at www.FilltheKettle.com Anyone wishing to volunteer during the campaign can call 613-531-5918 or email Lieutenant Tina Howard (right) and Major David McNeilly make the first donation of the christmaskettles@kingstonsa.ca season at the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle launch on Nov. 14. Friendly neighbourhood Bella Bistro By Kate Kristiansen

The charming Bella Bistro was my throwback Thursday lunch, perched beside the water’s edge. It’s a great location to enjoy an autumn day. Located at 4050 Bath Road at the corner of Collins Bay Road, the bistro/diner is a friendly, art deco throwback with its wooden booths, brocade turquoise fabric seating and vintage shelving—a pleasant surprise to this west end suburb. Owner/chefs Paul Muller and Kevin Lapeer work with local farmers and suppliers and are committed to serving good food— homemade pizza, pasta, paninis and more—they make their own bread, pizza dough, sauces, dressings and desserts. The $10 lunch special was what lured me in—a superb selection of stuffed paninis, pizza, soup of the day, salads and sandwiches. The room was filled with ladies lunching and business conversations. While off the beaten track from the usual downtown hub, it is certainly a busy spot. I scanned the $10 menu, but settled on the chalkboard feature of the day—the maple sriracha

cauliflower veggie burger with arugula, lemon pepper aioli and crispy fried onions. Veggie burgers are one of the hardest things to get right, especially when you are like me, and a meat-eating connoisseur in search of the perfect juicy burger. But, this was as close to perfection as I’ve encountered in a very long time. I salivate over a good veggie burger, but often am disappointed by dry cardboard impressions. In my 20s, I had a bout of being

a self-proclaimed passionate activist of the vegetarian cause. I emphatically decided that I would no longer be eating meat, ever, and opted for the vegetarian life, sparked by my veggie friends, who challenged me to give it a try through endless debate. I embarked on this new lifestyle with the usual vigour, and there began my love affair with vegetarian burgers. It lasted until my roommate decided to cook bacon. I’m a total sell-out when it comes to food. For a moment, the ‘80s came

flooding back, and I was delighted to re-discover an old favourite. I bit into the homemade crunchy, yet “meaty” vegetarian pattie topped with aioli and crispy fried onions—a great balance of sweetness and hot spice. My inner voice screamed for the sweet potato fries, but with a flu-shot-throbbing-arm, the words

garden salad had spurted out when I ordered my side. Best. Idea. Ever. My body was missing my long harvested garden, so it was such a great feeling to chomp on fresh greens, red pepper, onions and the simple oil dressing. Continued on page 19 R0013007690_1120

MOVIE: Big Hero 6 STARRING: Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, T. J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, Daniel Henney and James Cromwell DIRECTORS: Don Hall and Chris Williams RATING: PG Entertainment – Big Hero 6 is one of the best superhero original stories I’ve ever seen. It’s a little bit Peter Parker, a little bit Tony Stark and just a little bit Avengers. It draws a little from all those great stories, but in the end it’s something all its own. Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) is a 14-year-old super genius in need of some direction. Fortunately his older brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) is there to show him the way. Tadashi shows Hiro his lab at the university. Once Hiro sees what he could be doing his goal is to get into that school. To do that he has to impress professor Robert Callaghan (James Cromwell). To impress Callaghan, Hiro invents miniature robots that obey his mental commands. The micro-bots impress, and Hiro gets accepted to the university. Unfortunately, that very night there’s a fire in the school, and Callaghan and Tadashi get trapped inside when the building explodes. Hiro is devastated. Then his brother’s medical robot Baymax (Scott Adsit) comes on-line to help Hiro feel better. The two stumble upon one of Hiro’s micro-bots which leads them to all the rest that were supposedly destroyed in the fire. It also

leads them to a mysterious figure in a kabuki mask who is now controlling them. It dawns on Hiro that the masked figure must have stolen his microbots, and started the fire that killed his brother. Hiro decides he’s going after the guy in the kabuki mask, but Baymax is going to need some upgrades. Of course Tadashi’s lab mates and friends aren’t letting Hiro go it alone. Needless to say Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), Go Go (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Fred (T.J. Miller) are also going to need some upgrades. They put their incredibly smart brains together and turn themselves into superheroes ready to tackle anything Mr. Kabuki throws at them. Big Hero 6 is outstanding. Some family films shy away from certain topics in order to be as kid friendly as possible. Big Hero 6 doesn’t shy away from anything. It’s an intelligent and sensitive film that’s only focus is on telling the best story possible. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, and it sends shivers down your spine. Visually Big Hero 6 is gorgeous. The animation is rich and detailed. The play between light and colour is so surreal you begin to think you’re looking into another world. These characters are funny, smart, charming and of course heroic. The voice actors giving them life are awesome. T. J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez are outstanding. Ryan Potter and Scott Adsit are perfectly matched to their characters and perfectly matched with each other. I loved Big Hero 6. It catapulted right into the top 5 of my favourite superhero movies.

Friendly neighbourhood Bella Bistro Continued from page 17

I finished with the decadent Bella signature parfait—a blend of campfire ice-cream (made by Slickers from Prince Edward County), house-made chocolate sauce, graham cracker and whip cream. It was soft and marshmello’y to cut into. Sitting in its frosty glass jam jar, (worthy to note when too often in the autumn season ice-cream can be served far too cold)—this was dreamy, sprinkled with a sweet graham cracker crumb topping. A great finish any time of the year. Other dessert choices

include; fudge brownie, crème brulee, carrot cake, apple crisp, homemade milkshakes and a dailyfeatured option of seasonal choices. Bella Bistro serves up local food, and thanks the farmers for their support. Most meat is naturally raised within 100 kilometres and I may be wrong, but I think I could taste Patchwork Gardens greens in the salad. The art deco font on the sign signals a blast from the past, and while the streetside frontage with its large windows can be unappealing, don’t be fooled. Enter the

charming Bella dining room and you soon forget the street outside. This is obviously a local favourite, and a great casual spot for lunch or dinner. The staff is knowledgeable about the food and ensures every need is met. Bella Bistro is open Sunday-Thursday 11:30 a.m8 p.m. and Thursday-Sunday 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information visit their website bellabistro.ca. Is 2014 the year of recall overload? General Motors. It seems they are having problems getting customers to come in to their dealerships to get the ignition recall repairs completed, so they’re resorting to bribery, offering owners (in the U.S.) $25 gift cards, good at up to seven different retailers such as Starbucks or Walmart when they

get their recall done. But why wouldn’t a car owner rush to get a safety related recall completed? There are basically two types of customers when it comes to recalls; one who routinely ignores manufacturer mail-outs (including recalls) either due to a mistrust of the automaker’s motives or a lack of concern about their vehicle and one who believes they can’t drive their car until the repair is completed. Yes there are varying degrees of both types but the latter group can drive more than their cars right round the bend. What the majority of consumers don’t know is that it is a very rare circumstance that sees an automaker ready to complete a recall when the notice is first mailed out. In many cases, it’s a matter of not having a sufficient supply of parts available to dealership service departments. Often recall notice timing is early due to a manufacturer’s desire to meet federal guidelines with notifying consumers in a timely manner. It can often take weeks or months for required parts to be made, packaged, and distributed. In cases where the numbers of autos recalled are large, dealerships are sometimes restricted to the number of parts they can order. None of these circumstances are controllable in any way shape or form by the retailer. But what should a responsible car owner do? In most cases if the recall represents a serious risk and repair parts are not readily available, carmakers will provide measures and instructions to minimize the danger. For example, when the GM ignition switch recall was in its early stages, drivers were instructed to not have anything attached to the ignition key; no rings, fobs, tags, or dangly decorations (this is good advice no matter what type of vehicle you drive). In other cases suspect components can be rendered inoperable if they’re not required for function or safety. A current Fiat Chrysler Auto recall for an electrical fault in rear power-vent windows will allow the owner to have the switch disconnected until

repair parts are available. But what if there are no mitigating measures to take? Whether or not you decide to operate a vehicle that’s under a voluntary or mandatory safety recall is really up to you. But no automaker will supply free transportation while your vehicle sits in the driveway. Consider that almost every safety recall issued in North America involved issues where only a small percentage of the vehicle’s involved developed a fault that put drivers and passengers at risk. As some of my colleagues at repair shops put it, “the vehicle really isn’t any different after the recall notice came in the mail than before the post office delivered it.” Or think of it this way; there are a lot more risks to driving public roads every day than an uncompleted safety recall presents. Tip of the week; as the cooler weather approaches the importance of a fully operational heating and ventilation system becomes more important than ever. A key to this is the cabin air filter. Many customers are surprised to learn that their vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter. It’s becoming a very popular feature on even the most entry-level vehicles. When this filter gets clogged it can reduce the amount of air flow in the vehicle and can slow windshield defrosting time. If you’re not sure if your vehicle has a cabin filter, check with your dealership or owner’s manual. Most of these filters can be accessed and checked without tools or special skills and if they’re dirty, replace them to keep the view clear and you and your passengers warm. Talented young figure skater has big dreams By Hollie Pratt-Campbell

hpratt-campbell@metroland.ca

The program, which was skated to the Les Miserables soundtrack, was a personal best for Alex in terms of both difficulty and scoring. The highlight: landing a double lutz, a move that is known for its difficulty. The music, which sampled several well known Les Mis songs, added to the challenge. “It really changes emotionally throughout,” Alex explains. “It starts with the opening song of the play, which is dramatic and strong. The middle is the ‘bringing home’ part - it’s slower and more emotional. The last piece is At the End of the Day, which is kind of more happy and cheerful.”

Alex spent a lot of time preparing both mentally and physically. “If you just work hard and know that you can do it and you’ve done it before, you can actually do really well,” she says, noting that “I was really nervous the night before, but in the morning I felt a bit better.” She adds that the proximity of this competition to her home of Odessa also helped. “It was kind of like a hometown crowd.” Next year, Alex will move up to the pre-novice level of figure skating, and continue to coach younger children through CanSkate. “Now we can’t drag her off the ice,” laughs Trudi.

And Alex doesn’t plan on hanging up her skates any time soon, either. In fact, she’s dreaming about as big as you can get. “I’d like to compete internationally and go to the 2022 Olympics,” she says, before heading out to the ice at Henderson Arena for one of her many weekly practices.

Sports - It took quite a bit of convincing before Trudi Wright allowed her daughter, Alexandra Wright, to take up figure skating. “My brother and I were both figure skaters, so I know the sport very well,” Wright says. “I know the kind of work it takes, so when she said she wanted to figure skate I actually tried to steer her away from it. But she hounded from the time she was five until she was seven and we finally relented.” It’s a good thing they did, too, since Alex, 13, has proven to be more

than a little talented at the sport. Skating out of Amherstview’s Loyalist Winter Club through the CanSkate program, she recently took third place out of 21 skaters in the Juvenile Women U14 category for all of Eastern Ontario, a competition that was held this year in Napanee. The ranking qualified Alex to move on to the Skate Canada Challenge, which will take place in Pierrefonds, QC, next month. “It’s always pretty emotional for our family because she works really hard,” says Trudi with a tear of pride in her eye. “It’s really nice to see that pay off.”

Wishing Everyone a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful Holiday Season Southern Frontenac Community Services Corporation

613-376-6477 1-800-763-9610 4419 George St. Sydenham Ontario

Due to the amazing support of our caring community we have been able to provide food and gifts to families in need at Christmas, and emergency support, for over 25 years! Your donation goes a long way, from funding our Christmas initiative (69 baskets last year up from 62 in 2012) to providing relief for those in need following a house fire, or those with heating or utilities at threat of disconnection. Many individuals and organizations also step forward to help alongside us. St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church support us throughout the year and as Christmas approaches, the families of Leslie Reade and Josie Steele are again hosting Vision Soup on Saturday November 22nd at the Grace Centre from 11:30am to 1:30pm. For $20 you get to choose a handcrafted pottery bowl filled with delicious homemade soup provided by local individuals and businesses. Proceeds are shared between LC&ERC and South Frontenac Community Services (SFCSC). Tickets available at Sydenham Veterinary Clinic and SFCSC. They sell out every year so get yours early! Sydenham Holiness Church arranges a yearly event which takes place this year at the Grace Centre on Sunday, December 7th at 7:00pm. The Faithful Friends are providing musical entertainment followed by refreshments. All donations support the Christmas Basket initiative. Tom Revell, Matt Clow and Jamie Deline have also organized 2 dances to support LC&ERC and Verona Christmas for Kids. The first was held on November 15th at the Verona Lions Hall and the next will take place on December 13th at the Sydenham Legion at 8:00pm. Bands performing for the charities at (Verona) Bauder Road, Feral Five, Ten Cent Hat, (Sydenham) Bauder Road, Dark Horse and Standing Still. There will be silent auction items and a buffet served at 11:00pm. Tickets available at the door, or from Tom Revell - 613-888-2229, or Sue Clinton 613-888-1389. Each year food and toys are generously donated to us by our local schools, Loughborough Public and Sydenham High School. We are especially grateful to SFCSC for the use of the Grace Centre for the packing and delivery of Christmas Baskets. You may have received our recent mailing, our only appeal to the community for financial support. Please make cheques payable to LC&ERC; P.O. Box 88; Sydenham, ON; K0H 2T0. Provide your address so that a tax receipt can be mailed to you in the New Year. Donations may also be deposited in the festively decorated jars at Sydenham Village Offices and Merchants. To be considered for a Christmas basket, or to recommend someone who might benefit from our services, please call and leave a message at 613-572-6004.
