Frontenac approves arrangement with feds, Queen’s for paramedics wellness study By Craig Bakay Reporter

News — Frontenac County Council gave the goahead at its recent regular meeting in Sydenham for a study on paramedics’ health and wellness. However, other than being informed of the study’s progress, County Council won’t really be involved. The two-year study will be funded by $250,000 from the federal Department of National Defense’s Canadian Safety and Security Program and $150,000 from Queen’s University, whose School of Kinesiology and Health Studies will conduct the research. The study itself will consist of six parts: an advisory committee, developing the survey, survey administration logistics plans, optimization of the plan, survey administration, data analysis, cross validation and reporting. Chief Paramedic Paul Charbonneau said the research effort will “enhance our understanding of health and wellness indicators for paramedics across Canada to help inform operational and staffing decisions. He said Frontenac Paramedic Services has partnered with Queen’s University on several research projects in the past and “the synergy of this partnership is again congruent for both parties. Coun. Ron Vandewal asked what kind of commitment this represented for Frontenac Paramedic Services. “Are they allowed to access all our records? Vandewal said. “No, said Charbonneau. “This is all voluntary, but there will be a significant time commitment for Dep.
Chief (Gale) Chevalier. Warden Denis Doyle proposed an amendment to the resolution mandating that Council be consulted regularly and have a member on the committee. “Why do we need to be consulted? said Coun. Ron Higgins. “Because we’re the directors of this corporation, said Doyle. Charbonneau said there would be regular reports to Council but there was no provision for a County Councilor to sit on the committee. “There are seven or eight milestones in the project so reporting should come naturally, Charbonneau said. “My recommendation is, right from the beginning, you should meet with the committee and give your input. “So, there are no members of Council on the committee, it’s all paramedics and researchers? said Vandewal. “It was presented to the federal government as a study by paramedics for paramedics, said Charbonneau. The “scope of the project, as stated in the project “charter, is to employ a random sampling survey to document the human resources profile for paramedics in Canada. Over the two-year duration of the project, a survey tool will be developed and verified through pilot testing administered to a random sample of paramedics stratified by province; follow-up focus group meetings and physical fitness testing sessions will occur to cross validate the survey data, and a final report describing the hman resources profile for paramedics in Canada will be delivered. Higgins was the only member of Council to vote against the proposal.

Over the years KLC College: Healthcare, Business, Education has developed a reputation of excellence in training for careers in the healthcare sector. The College has built this reputation by offering programs such as Physiotherapy Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Intra-Oral Dental Assisting and Personal Support Worker. Most of these are accredited by third party governing bodies and meet national standards. This allows the graduates to have very marketable skills and increase their opportunities when looking for placements. The College does, however, deliver a number of other high demand career options that offer the graduate equally rewarding career opportunities. A good example of this is the Education Assistant Program. This area has been experiencing a high demand for graduates as a number of school boards have vacancies created by the integration of students with special needs into regular classrooms. The result is that schools accommodate those special needs, whether it is autism spectrum disorder or ADHD, and hire Education Assistants to help the teacher with these individual students. KLC College’s program focuses on developing skills for the EA in all of these areas which makes them very attractive to the schools that have students with special needs. The program is also designed so that the KLC College students can actually continue their studies to increase their skill areas by pursuing a diploma in our Child and Youth Care Worker Program.

All bees at risk from pesticides and loss of habitat says pollination biologist Reporter
News — “If we lose our pollinators, we’ll lose food (seeds) for wildlife and we’ll lose our crops, pollination biologist Susan Chan told the Sharbot Lake Property Owners Association Annual General Meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. As the featured guest speaker, Chan had the audience’s complete attention as she produced a wealth of information on bees and other insects that pollenate our wild and cultivated plants. “The insect pollinators that visit our plants have to be hairy, she said. “If they don’t have hairy legs, the pollen won’t stick to them. “Beetles are not good pollinators.” There is only one species of honey bee in Ontario and it’s not native, she said. There are about 400 native
species. “Still, the one bee most likely to sting you is the honey bee,” she said. “They live in large colonies and have strong defensive instincts. “But most bees in Ontario are solitary, live in the ground and it’s the females that collect the pollen.” She went on to show slides of various species you may encounter along with a plethora of bee facts and anecdotes. “Then there are the haliclid bees, or ‘sweat’ bees,” she said. “They’ll come on you because they’re after the salt in your sweat. “They’re not likely to sting you but they do bite.” Then there are the ceratina, the little black bees around raspberry plants, the wool carvers that shave wool from sheep plants and the common bumblebee.
“Bumblebees make nests in the ground,” she said. “They love excavated rodent nests like those chipmunks make.” Unfortunately, she said, all bees are suffering a decline. “There are two reasons for this, loss of habitat and toxins,” she said. In particular, she said, insecticides called neonicotinoids are a big problem. “They’re toxic (to bees) in parts per
billion,” she said. “And the problem is systemic. The neonicotinoids get put on seeds and end up in all parts of the plant. “They’re highly water soluble and the two major polluters are golf courses and agriculture.” She said she’s not advocating for a ban on neonicotinoids but rather more control. “They’re being used prophylactically,” she said. “But ‘just
in case’ is not needed.” She said there are two things people can do to help bees: 1- don’t consider all weeds to be bad and 2 – encourage natural spaces. She also said despite the fact wasps are not good pollinators, she’s still a big fan. “They may not be good pollinators but they do get their energy from nectar and they’re great predators of things like plant-harmful larvae,” she said.

Sharbot Lake Property Owners Association AGM draws a crowd By Craig Bakay Reporter
News — About 60 people showed up at St. James Major in Sharbot Lake last weekend for the Sharbot Lake Property Owners Association Annual General Meeting. President Kevin Browne, Vicepresident Ken Waller and Secretary-Treasurer were all re-elected by acclamation as was member-atlarge Guy McLeod. Ralph Pentland joins the executive as member-atlarge as well. The position of Environmental Issues Coordinator remains vacant for the time being as Rem Westland stepped down. Browne told the meeting that they’re always looking for volunteers, particularly for a proposed walleye spawning bed project and gave a report on the invasive species sampling initiative. “It got started last year,” he said. “The zebra mussels are still there — but nothing else seems to have invaded.” In her report as Secretary-Treasurer, Waller said as of June 30, there were 216 members and she reported that the organization is in good shape financially with a balance of $6,196.68. Central Frontenac Mayor Frances Smith addressed the meeting
and drew particular interest from the crowd when she reported on efforts to locate an additional boat launch on the East Basin. “Nobody on the East Basin wants one next to them,” she said. “And I’m not sure the Environment Ministry wants on either.” With that, someone in the crowd shouted out that the police and fire departments might see it differently, Smith replied: “I have talked to the fire department and they don’t have a problem . . . I will talk to the OPP.” When all the regular business concluded, it was time for the guest speakers. Representing Watershed Canada, Emily Bacon and Kendra Button extolled the virtues of their shoreline assessment and rehabilitation programs. “We can provide a data report of things like structures and docks in the buffer zone,” she said. “But don’t worry if you’ve mowed the lawn right down to the shore, we won’t tell you to get rid of it. “But we do suggest that 25 per cent of the buffer zone area be used for lake access and 75 per cent for natural growth.” She said they can arrange for natural plants for landowners, who only pay for the plants themselves. “And we’ll plant whatever natu-
ral plants you want – shrubs, trees, etc — wherever you want,” she said. “And the studies are all non-
regulatory, we can’t give out any information on your property.” The winners of the annual photo
contest were: 1st Guy McLeod, 2nd Gwen Decosta and 3rd Barb Wilson.

that seemed to greatly concern Coun. Brent Cameron was the aspect of mandatory inspections and he used the opportunity to reiterate those concerns. “One of the things I’d hope the committee might consider is how to deal with people who for financial reasons can’t comply,” Cameron said. “If people can’t comply (with directions to upgrade or replace their septic systems) then we are affecting the livability of their homes.” “The committee has discussed costs to the municipality and costs to pumpers and haulers,” Neven said. “And it has discussed potential financing for homeowners.” At the May 12 regular Council meeting, Council approved a voluntary inspection program for Big Clear Lake and Silver Lake at a cost of $6,000. To date, voluntary programs have been offered on the West Basin of Sharbot Lake, Eagle Lake, Sharbot Lake hamlet and surrounding area and Kennebec Lake. The report said Silver Lake is an at-capacity lake (in terms of the number of residences because it’s a lake trout sensitive lake) and Big Clear has a higher density of structures and use than many area lakes. With the voluntary inspection on Silver and Big Clear underway, that leaves only the high capacity lakes of Chippego Lake, Long Lake, Horseshoe Lake, and Bull Lake. The only other at-capacity lake that has not been offered the program to date is Crow Lake, the report said.

News — Central Frontenac Council gave its approval for staff to prepare a “draft” licensing bylaw for septic pumpers and haulers with associated schedules under the Municipal Act to license septic pumpers and haulers operating in Central Frontenac Township at its recent regular meeting in Arden. The bylaw is to include a reporting format for the pumpers and haulers as well as a communications plan to “cover the highlights of the Septic Re-inspection Report to ensure public awareness of the proposed direction of the committee and to welcome public input on the process,” said Chief Building Official Jeremy Neven. Neven also asked that the resolution for a draft bylaw also include authorization for the Septic Re-inspection Committee to investigate all potential associated costs and implementation requirements associated with the proposed direction outlined in the Septic Re-inspection report dated April 30, 2015. Coun. Bill MacDonald said he thought the most important aspect of the report was to keep the public informed of proposed directions suggested by the committee. “If someone has comments, they should bring them to the committee,” he said. “Maybe there’s something we could do with our website,” said Mayor Frances Smith. One aspect of the April 30 report
“I just couldn’t move my left side. I literally couldn’t move my hand, my leg, and I started to feel weak,” he recalls. “I just said to my wife, call 911. Something’s not going right here.”

Fortunately the Gardner family had just moved to Kingston, home to one of Canada’s top acute stroke teams. They were able to get Mike the care he needed as soon as he arrived at Kingston General Hospital. Doctors quickly presumed that he was suffering a stroke, and immediately got him the MRI, diagnostics and medication he needed.

“I got the sense from the two doctors who were taking care of me at the time that they were going to try to help me as best they could,” he says.
The urgency of Mike’s stroke meant that we has able to get an MRI right away, but there is a growing need for a second MRI in our region to service the hundreds of other patients waiting for a complex scan. After a month of care at KGH, Mike was moved to Providence Care’s St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital site where he began a rigorous rehabilitation program. Mike continues to work alongside a team of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, improving his mobility every day. Six months after his stroke, Mike is walking himself down the path to recover, but he admits he still has a lot of work to do. “I’ve still got a lot of road ahead,” he says, but he doesn’t think he would have been able to go home three months after his stroke if KGH and Providence Care weren’t making this happen. In Our Opinion
What would happen if a windmill caught fire in our woodland forests? sides to every story but even if the number is somewhere in the middle, it still seems like a significant risk. Now, granted that there are windmills all over Europe and the number that catch fire is small compared to the total number of windmills. But Eastern Ontario is not Europe (not that the Europeans have such a great track record on taking care of the environment anyways). For one thing, there aren’t the great forests in Europe like there are here. And think about it. If a windmill catches fire on a beach in Holland, what is there around it to burn? But if a windmill in the bush 40 klicks from the Plevna fire station catches fire . . . we’re talking raging inferno before anybody can even get to it to start spraying water. Add to this the wind factor, as in fanning the flames. Can anybody reasonably argue the winds wouldn’t whip up a forest fire when the reason they put these things where they do is because there’s already plenty of wind there? The thing is that wind turbines

Column — You know something we don’t seem to have heard much about in the great debates over windmills farms in our area — windmill fires. Now, of course the good folks advocating the installation of windmill farms aren’t going to bring it up. They have enough concerns from potential neighbours that they don’t want another thing muddying the waters. But a story in the London Daily Mail recently suggests that there are about 120 windmill fires every year. The industry claims that there are only about 12. The figures were compiled by engineers at Imperial College London and Edinburgh University. “The researchers claim that out of 200,000 turbines world-wide, 117 fires take place annually, the newspaper reported. OK, so there are always two

have a lot of highly flammable materials such as hydraulic oil and plastics in close proximity to machinery and electrical wires. If the machinery is faulty or overheats ... Granted the industry takes great pains to prevent fires in their turbines. The beasts cost a lot to put up in the first place and once they’re up and running, they generate a ton of revenue that industry officials would be reluctant to part with. But the best laid plans of mice and men . . . And the thing is, it would only take one forest fire to make a mess of things in Northern Frontenac County, or Lanark, or L & A. Because unlike wind farms on European beaches, with all the fuel at hand in an Ontario forest, how long would it take for one blown burning turbine to ignite another, and another and another? We all want to save the planet and be good to the environment and, yes, wind power seems like a good alternative source of energy. But it also sounds like wind farms in forests could be a disaster just waiting to happen.

Extra payday? Not so fast Editorial – If you have kids, you may have noticed an extra bump in your bank account this week. The Federal Government’s expanded Universal Child Care Benefit, or UCCB, rolled out on Monday, July 20. The retroactive payments deposited an extra $60 per month per child to parents everywhere beginning from January, 2015. That means that if you have one child, your July 20 UCCB payment should be $520; for two, $1,040; for three, $1,560 and so forth. That means if you have two children under the age of seven, you just got your hands on an extra grand that you didn’t have before. Or did you? Unlike the means-tested Canada Child Tax Benefit that’s been around since 1989, the UCCB is taxable up to the percentage of your current tax bracket. In addition, to help-bankroll the new program, the government rescinded a longstanding non-refundable tax credit, the child tax credit, in its latest budget. So where does that leave you? Let’s say you have two kids and you make a net income of around $50,000 per year. Your combined federal and provincial tax rate would be approximately 31.15 per cent. Well, there’s $324 out of your $1,040 UCCB right there. Now, let’s factor in the effect that the rescinding of the child tax credit had. The credit can be valued at 15 per cent of $2,255 per child – which works out to be $337.50 per child. Now let’s do the math ($1,040 – $324 – $337.50 – $337.50 = $41.) Yup, $41 is left out of that big payday. Now, you will still continue to receive an extra $60 per child per month after you receive your July payment; however, after tax this only amounts to an extra $316.00 per year for both kids. That’s a far cry from the advertised annual figure of $1,440. Indeed, if your marginal tax rate is higher than 31.15 per cent the benefit will be negligible. So much for the grand. This new cash handout looks suspiciously like a way of buttering up voters in advance of the fall election, trying to woo them into voting for the Conservative Party. We encourage our readers not to fall for this sort of ploy. Vote for the party that best reflects your values – which may not necessarily be the one that appears to be handing out large amounts of free cash.

‘The time is now’ for Kingston’s first residential hospice By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – For years, Hospice Kingston has provided comfort and support for individuals and their families who are living with life-limiting illnesses or coping with grief and loss. Residents in Kingston have also received palliative care through Providence Care at St. Mary’s of the Lake hospital; but even with both of these services, something has been missing. On July 17, board members and chairs from Hospice Kingston and Providence Care gathered to announce a partnership and plans for this missing piece – the first residential hospice in Kingston. “This exciting partnership opens up multiple opportunities and together we will improve family and patient experiences,” said Natasha Girard, executive director of Hospice Kingston. “Residential hospices have proven that they are highly cost effective and provide a more appropriate care setting for individuals at the end of their lives.” The proposed seven-bed residential hospice would provide a home-like environment with specialized nursing and personal support care services for patients in their last few weeks of life. The residence, scheduled to open in October of 2017, would have many home comforts including privacy and elements of nature and it would emphasize holistic, patient- and family-centered care. The location for the residential hospice has yet to be determined, but members of the Providence Care board of directors have suggested that the new Providence Village would be an apt location. “We believe that it fits very well with the sisters’ vision and our vision for a site that includes services for the most vulnerable in our community,” said Peter Merkley, Providence Care board chair. “As we move forward with Providence Village, partnerships with other agencies will be key. We have a history of working collaboratively
and our board is pleased to be continuing that today.” A capital campaign for the residential hospice will launch later this year. The campaign is entitled ‘The Time is Now’ and campaign cabinet chair Peter Kingston hopes that it will be a quick success. “Our community is a hub for medical care and yet we do not have a residential hospice,” said Kingston. “We all have a responsibility in how we should take care of our dying. As chair of the capital campaign, I can say, without hesitation, that the time is now to build a residential hospice for the people of our community.” Kingston saw the need for a residential hospice in the Limestone City firsthand when his mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2004. After going through treatments, it was determined that her cancer was terminal. As per her wishes, Kingston and his family cared for her at home for as long as possible, but her health kept deteriorating.
“The only option for her at that point was to go to a hospital. If there had been a residential hospice in Kingston at that time she would have absolutely gone,” said Kingston. “A residential hospice would have allowed us to focus more on her emotional needs rather than her medical needs. We could have talked more and shared stories and I still regret that we didn’t have the opportunity to do that more.” For ‘The Time is Now’ capital campaign, Kingston will be joined by longtime Providence Care supporter and former MPP John Gerretsen, who will act as honorary chair. Gerretsen echoed the sentiments of other speakers at the announcement and urged the community to support this much-needed service: “It has been the one missing link between palliative care, long-term care and hospice care here in the city. I look forward to making sure I do whatever I can to make sure the capital funding is there for this hospice in Kingston.”

A tale of many cities might be live performers.” Tale of a Town is part of this year’s Kick & Push Festival, a collaborative effort involving six theatre companies. “[Tale of a Town] is awesome,” said Gowdy. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before.” That’s saying something considering that Gowdy works with the Stratford Festival and has worked with Thousand Islands Playhouse. She’s directed the edgy Theatre Kingston Production of Red as well as children’s theatre, and she’s starred in the lead female role in Venus in Fur. From July 23 to July 25, the storymobile set up shop at the corner of Sydenham and Princess. Lots of people, including Mayor Bryan Paterson, dropped in for an interview. The crew also visited local businesses, raconteurs they could find and anyone on the street who wanted to share a memory. “Some people are shy,” said Gowdy. “They don’t think they have anything to share. But you get them talking and they have wonderful memories and tidbits.” The Kingston shows and celebrations will take place on August 1. Gowdy turned Kingston’s tales into a short podcast, which she narrates. There’ll be an interactive installation at a storefront during the Princess Street Promenade, where the street is closed and turned into a pedestrian area. “It’s an interactive audio art installation,” said Gowdy. “We have about 30 headphones. People can listen and be led through the space by performers.” Those performances will run at 11 a.m., 1, 4 and 7 p.m. “People will hear the stories of their neighbourhoods,” said Gowdy. “They
may be surprised by things they didn’t know.” When people visit the installation, they’ll be supporting artists who are working to promote downtown. You will become involved with a wider Canadian community. The project has been travelling coast to coast and at the same time the Kingston project is ongoing, DiLiberto, the Artistic Director

Daytripper – Just as shared memories help weave the tapestry of family life, shared memories in the conscious and unconscious help bind communities. The Tale of a Town Canada, a sitespecific theatre and media project, is about caring for your community. It allows participants to share stories about the main streets of their towns. “It’s a celebration of local culture leading up to Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017,” said Charlotte Gowdy, who has done much of the groundwork in Kingston for the project. Gowdy, an actor and director is currently working in theatre in Stratford. She’s devoting three weeks to The Tale of a Town on site in Kingston. We’ve all heard tales of Kingston’s early history. This is a city that’s ripe with legendary citizens, people like Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir Robert Barrie, Margaret Angus, John Counter, Agnes Maule Machar, Agnes Etherington, Harriet Cartwright, Molly Brant and John Stuart. These are residents from many years past who helped make Kingston what it is today: A city rich in military history, the arts, health care and medical research. We also have a more recent history featuring people or businesses we remember from our younger days or from stories told by our parents or grandparents. The community remembers stores long since closed and people—the heroes and characters of Kingston—some of whom are long gone, others not-so-long gone. Captain Matthew Dawe, Joe Chithalen, Wally High and Zal Yanovsky come instantly to mind. “Tale of a Town is the history of now,” said Gowdy. We remember community icons. For example, many in Kingston fondly remember Eric Lee—AKA the elevator guy at S & R Department Store. Fans of the tall, ruggedly handsome and classy Lee even started a Facebook fan page dedicated to him back in the day. It’s only been five years since S & R closed and the beloved department store continues to exist in our collective memory. Such are cultural gems. That’s what The Tale of a town is about: remembered stories. The project was launched in May 2014 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Members of the Tale team travel across Canada in a small teardrop trailer called the storymobile, a recording studio on wheels. It’s about capturing the collective community memory. Gowdy’s noticed that certain stories—like the S & R elevator guy— keep popping up. “The Tales project got started in the Parkdale area of Toronto,” said
Gowdy. “Lisa Marie Diliberto of Fixt Point theatre saw many businesses closing down on Queen Street West. She decided to interview people about Parkdale. It became a show at Theatre Passe Muraille. Then she decided to do this across Canada.” Gowdy is friends with Diliberto and admires her work. The project was looking for someone with Kingston connections, and Gowdy was an obvious choice. Other participants in Kingston include Katie Swift, who is able to interview in French and has been involved in Northern Ontario already, and JP Davidson is the audio technician. The project has a focus on downtown and main streets. “It’s the history of memories within people’s lifetimes,” said Gowdy. “People are talking about Morrison’s, Brian’s Records, Linos. There’s talk about political activism in the town over the decades. People mention Chez Piggy and Cookes.” Why does any of this matter? According to the founders’ website, remembering the past can help the future. “Across Canada, countless main streets, along with the stories they hold, are in the midst of disappearance as old gives way to new, local gives way to global, diversity gives way to uniformity, and life gives way to death. It is our hope that The Tale of a Town will save the almost lost stories that reveal our past and inspire a bright future for our main streets in Canada.” Gowdy explained that as big box stores coming into cities, local culture can become lost. Sadly, those stores have no connection to the community and can just as quickly disappear. Witness the sudden exits by Target and Future Shop. Poof. Once they’re gone, our downtown and main streets remain. “We try to focus on the downtown,” said Gowdy. “But we’ve had some stories of Skeleton Park. There are memories of local characters. One of the recurring themes is that Kingston has the advantages of a big city, but a small town feeling. We’ve also heard about the decline in bookstores, the empty storefronts, losing Woolworth’s and the lunch counters downtown. There are funny stories from local pubs.” She said that people talk about the waterfront and how it’s changed over the last hundred years. “It used to be a rough part of town.” Many people notice the architecture, the limestone and how some storefronts have taken down modern facades to reveal the old. “This is all leading up to Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017,” said Gowdy. Along the way the project is creating podcasts and sometimes performances. “In some towns, like Kingston, there will be a community celebration,” said Gowdy. “People can come in and listen and interact with performers. Feeding the Kingston community one recipe delivery at a time By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – For many people, cooking a meal can be a bit overwhelming; it takes time, effort, proper ingredients and a recipe. But what if some of these things were delivered to your door and all you needed to do was throw them together? This is the idea behind Simply Feed Me, a local Kingston start-up that hopes to put the fun back in cooking. “We want to make cooking easier and we feel like it has become such a big chore for people,” said co-founder Claudia Hidou. “They don’t want to go to the store, pick out the ingredients check out and then come home and put it all together. We have simplified this process.” So where did this simple idea come from? Hidou and her co-founder, Vladimir Bogdashkin, came up with the idea after cooking for themselves and getting frustrated with the amount of food they were wasting each week. “Portions at the grocery store are a bit overwhelming,” said Bogdashkin. “We’d buy a whole cabbage for one recipe and only use a quarter of it, the rest gets thrown out or you end up cooking the same recipe again and again just to use it up.” In North America, food waste is
on the rise and throughout the supply chain 40 per cent of food is being wasted. Of that 40 per cent, 10 to 15 per cent is waste being generated by consumers who are throwing away unused food week after week. “A lot of us don’t think about it over the long term, but we are essentially throwing away money,” said Hidou. “We all buy with good intentions but inevitably we end up wasting food or ordering takeout and forgetting about what we bought.” Simply Feed Me hopes to fix this food waste problem; the service lets customers pick one of eight recipes on their site; choose the number of portions they want to cook, pay for the food and pick a delivery time. All of the ingredients for that recipe are then assembled in their proper portions, packed with a step by step recipe card and delivered by Hidou and Bogdashkin dressed in chef hats and jackets. “People love the idea and we’ve had lots of good feedback,” said Bogdashkin. “We’ve seen a lot of interest from seniors who have mobility issues, busy moms who are juggling a million things and young professionals who simply work too much and don’t have the time to cook. All of these demographics still want a healthy home-cooked meal and we want to help with that.” Hidou and Bogdashkin also try to

Both fell in love with Kingston while studying at Queen’s and when it came time to start up their company they worked hard to source locally and build community partners. “We’ve established partnerships with Pig & Olive and we take advantage of the farmer’s markets in town,” said Hidou. “We believe that everything should be fresh and local whenever possible.” Simply Feed Me also uses recipes from local chefs and recently partnered with chefs at Le Chien Noir to create their next batch of recipes. Recipes are updated bi-weekly and customers can order two to eight portions of each recipe at a cost of approximately $9 a serving and a $5 delivery charge. Customers also have the option to pick up their order at Fuel Juice Shop on Princess Street for free. Hidou has been really happy with the response form the community and the support that Simply Feed Me has received, but her favourite part is seeing the end results from customers. “We love seeing people post photos of the finished product and seeing how it all came together,” she said. “They are so happy with their accomplishment and that is really rewarding.” For more information about Simply Feed Me or to place an order visit www.simplyfeed.me

Entrepreneur puts the ‘stone’ in Limestone City hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
News - Kingston is famously known as ‘The Limestone City’ for a good reason. You’ll find the rock everywhere around town – both in the ground and gracing the exterior of many local buildings. Local entrepreneur Peter Gilmore wondered why no one had ever tried to capitalize on this signature stone in the tourist market; now, he’s started a new business called Stone City
Gifts and Novelties and created a line of Kingston-themed paperweights and coasters literally made out of limestone that he acquires from a nearby quarry. “I tried to come up with something that was inexpensive but that would give the product a little bit of a look, he explains. Gilmore uses a rubber stamp to mark smooth pieces of limestone with local logos and images; he’s made prototypes for everything from Bellevue House to Queen’s to Wolfe Island, as well as

Originally from Scotland, Gilmore moved to Kingston in the early ‘80s and has owned several businesses over the years including, most recently, the downtown restaurant Serves You Right. He’s a draftsman by trade, and has continued to find ways to exercise his creativity and artistic talent over the years. “I’ve had this idea in my head about the Limestone City for years and nobody was marketing it,â€? he explains. “This year I decided to do something about it.â€? Gilmore says the first step will be to get the product accepted in the market, and he’s confident he’ll be successful. “They say we’re a paperless society but I think there is a place for a paperweight and I think there’s a huge place for a coaster both functionally and as a souvenir‌The feedback I’m getting is that right now there is interest, but how strong an interest I’ll have to go assess it from the stores it’s in right now.â€? Car wash falls short of world record, still helps make child’s wish come true
David Henry, 11, washes the windshield of a vehicle that stopped for a wash. Photo/Rob Mooy
By Rob Mooy Reporter
The local Krown outlet joined 200 centres across Canada in an attempt to break the world record for the most vehicles washed by an organization in one day. All proceeds raised will be donated to regional chapters of The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Locally, 92 vehicles were washed, with
money raised helping to make eleven-yearold leukemia survivor David Henry’s wish of going to Disney World with his family come true in September. Nationally, Krown Centres washed more than 3,000 cars, raising $34,000. While Krown did wash more cars and raise more money than last year’s Wash for a Wish fundraiser, they unfortunately did not break the world record for the most cars washed in one day.

Audrey had specific ritual for special prayers Lifestyle – For reasons unknown to me at the time, my older sister Audrey, when she had special prayers she felt needed to be sent to God, insisted I kneel with her on the braided rug beside our bed. These were prayers over and above those we had already said at
our Mother’s knee at bedtime. I dared to ask Audrey one time why her special prayers couldn’t be included then, and her short retort made it perfectly clear why. “Certainly not. That’s all I need is for Emerson to hear what my special prayers were and all of Renfrew County would know about them before the sun set the next day.” And so, when the need arose, I was asked to join Audrey on the braided rug, and when I asked her why she couldn’t pray on her own, she said she learned at Sunday School that there
was ‘safety in numbers’. I had no idea what she meant. But Audrey, who did many special favours for me, had a willing partner on the braided rug when she needed it. Questioning the why’s and the wherefore’s was not to concern me. And so, I found myself praying with Audrey for things, which had nothing to do with me whatsoever. This could be anything from being allowed to wear high heels, to finding money for a store-bought bra, to being asked to go to the strawberry social at the United Church. I thought that last prayer was pushing her luck, since we were Lutherans, but there we were one night, both on our knees by the bed, and Audrey in barely a whisper, asking God to find someone to ask her to the Strawberry Social at the United Church. Well, any doubts I may have been harbouring were soon cast aside when a young man from the Barr Side Road asked her to the social! I couldn’t believe it! And Audrey leaned over to me after hanging up the phone and

said, “See...safety in numbers.” Long before Audrey got out of public school, we prayed that when the time came, she would graduate from the Entrance Class. Well, I thought that was a needless prayer, since she was just about the smartest one at the Northcote School! But she wanted to be sure, as those farm girls who didn’t make it out of the Entrance Class, ended up doing housework for the rich people in Renfrew. Audrey couldn’t think of a worse fate! More than once I was caught with my mind somewhere else too. Audrey had always instructed me to keep close attention to what she was saying, and I was to repeat the prayer silently to myself. I can no longer remember what the prayer was about, but my mind certainly was not on what Audrey was praying for that night. My sister poked me in the ribs, which was my cue to say, ‘please God, hear our prayer’. As soon as Audrey’s elbow connected with me, I tried in vain to remember what we had been praying for, and for the life of me, couldn’t bring up one word Audrey had said. She had to repeat the prayer, which didn’t please her one bit. Audrey’s prayers could be long, depending on what she had on her ‘want list’. That’s when I lost track of what she was praying for. I could see no reason why she had to go into such detail with her prayers, convinced as I was that, as long as you let God know it was you, He would take care of the rest...all you had to do, I thought then, was to think of the prayer and that was
as good as saying it. However, I was never able to get Audrey into that way of thinking about prayer. She said too, it would be much better, if after the prayers were over, we both said “Amen” at the exact same time. I thought this was just another way of my sister making sure I was paying attention to what she was praying for. And then one night, the end of our praying together just about came to an end. That was the night Audrey was praying at great length, about what, I no longer remember. She had come to a pause, and it was long enough for me to think we were all finished, and so I let out a loud “Amen”. Well, did that open a can of worms. Audrey said she was just pausing, she wasn’t finished, and I had jumped the gun with the Amen, and so we had to say the prayer all over again. My sister eventually came to the conclusion that unless I was listening, paying attention, repeating the prayers where necessary, she was better off if she prayed alone. That was a good decision, I thought. It didn’t stop Audrey from getting down on the rug in front of our bed when the need arose. It just meant that what she was saying and thinking was between her and God, and she didn’t need a fidgeting six-year-old sister to interfere. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Playtrium launches new interactive, educational EyePlay system By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – There’s a new game in town and it encourages kids to play on the floor; EyePlay is an interactive game where motion activated activities are projected onto the floor, resulting in active, sensory play. EyePlay is new to Canada and new to Playtrium in Kingston, where it launched at the beginning of July. “We were looking for something new to add to Playtrium and we wanted to add more educational
value,” said director Carrie Armstrong. “EyePlay was perfect and we are excited to have it here.” The games on EyePlay are interchangeable and many can improve hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and even promote literacy, science and mathematical skills. Armstrong hopes the system will be attractive to parents and teachers. “We also wanted something that would maybe encourage more field trips and something that would encourage teachers to bring their students,” she said. “Maybe it could
even tie into their curriculum.” Currently, the EyePlay system at Playtrium has 10 games loaded onto it including Ballpit, Cheeseheist, Ice Hockey, Spaceblox, SuperSoccer, Piano, and even colouring games. Games are not age specific and Armstrong has seen kids of all ages enjoying the games. “For older kids, they move faster in the games to try and get more points while younger kids like toddlers focus more on sensory and they move their hands to see what happens.” While many of the kids see the
game as a sort of videogame or larger iPad game, the system also promotes physical activity; it encourages them to move around the board quickly and many don’t even realize they are learning. “We had a woman come in with her child who has special needs and she called the company to see if there was a home edition because her daughter enjoyed it so much,” said Armstrong. “It was the perfect combination of movement and tactile learning for her daughter.” For eight-year-old Daniella Greenslade, the games are very
appealing, especially things like hockey and soccer. “I like being able to walk around on the game and play it that way,” she said. “I like it more than the other games here. It’s fun and you get some exercise too.” The EyePlay system is being offered for free with the price of admission at Playtrium for a limited time and Armstrong hopes that a lot of families come check it out. “The response has been really great. Some people are saying that it is like play therapy and it really depends on the needs of the child. Some kids find it a bit over stimulating, but I think for most kids it will be very beneficial.” For more information about Playtrium and EyePlay visit www. playtrium.ca

Being electronically challenged isn’t only concern consumers should have with their autos In a recent column we discussed the pros and cons of the headlong drive that most automakers are travelling in towards the smart-phone-like connectivity and functionality of their products. Many consumers such as the one who wrote this letter are concerned that they may not have any choice when purchasing future vehicles save getting one with controls and features beyond their needs or comfort level when it comes to operating those features. “Mr. Turner, This is just some quick positive feedback on your July 16th column
on driving distractions. My wife and I were hoping it wasn’t just us slipping into cranky elder-hood thinking that all of these dashboard electronics have to be dangerous. We worry that our next auto purchase would also have to involve taking a degree in electronic engineering and that no automaker would offer the option of an uncluttered dashboard? Does any manufacturer do so? Again BRAVO for hitting the nail on the head.” GW
A recent event in the U.S. reveals that being electronically challenged isn’t the only concern consumers should have with ultra-connected autos. Two young gentlemen the media have described as ‘professional hackers’ successfully and remotely hacked into the software of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee and from a distance of 10 miles (they could have done it
CANCER FIGHTS CANCER FIGHTS
DIRTY . DIRTY.
from the far side of the globe) were able to activate the AC system, adjust the audio volume, turn on the wipers and washers, disable the transmission and brakes, lock and unlock the doors, turn the steering wheel and shut off the engine. The hapless ‘driver’ in the vehicle was a volunteer that knew about and agreed to the test and while some of the hacks took place while the Jeep was travelling at low speeds in an empty parking lot, most of them happened while the vehicle was travelling on a busy multi-lane highway in a large urban centre. It would be interesting if this volunteer will face any unsafe driving charges. Before anyone relaxes and thanks their lucky stars they don’t own a late model Jeep, this type of software intrusion is possible on any vehicle with wireless connectivity and electronic vehicle systems’ controls made by any carmaker. Fortunately for Fiat Chrysler Auto (the Jeep’s manufacturer) our two geeks immediately contacted the automaker’s head office and met
with them to very quickly develop a software patch to protect consumers from such an attack in the future. The update can be installed by any authorized FCA retailer or by a product owner themselves by logging onto www.driveuconnect.com and following the ‘software update’ link. This site also supports less critical updates to FCA entertainment systems so checking it from time to time isn’t a bad idea, especially if your vehicle has experienced any audio system or connectivity problems. While this event makes for great news coverage and video (you can find the video online at www.wired.com), it really doesn’t yet represent any great risk to vehicle drivers. The talent it took was almost immeasurable (one of the two geeks was a former National Security Agency employee). And the value of the end result didn’t come anywhere close to the resources it took to deliver it. If the vehicle belonged to a high profile political target it might have been a different tale. So the average consumer really shouldn’t lose any sleep. But one consumer upon hearing of this story suggested
that automakers should offer something that cell-phones have for years; a setting to disconnect it from any wireless data networks such as required when travelling on a commercial airplane. As for our two hackers, they got exactly what they were after; national media attention in advance of an electronics security conference they are scheduled to appear at next month. On Sunday, Aug. 2, the Automotion Car Show lands at the Blockhouse Island in Brockville and the 51st version of the Chelrod Car Club Show ‘n’ Shine happens at the Hendrick Farm, 165 Old Chelsea Road in Chelsea, PQ.
