When Cain Hartigan was inducted as the bush chaplain for the CunnamullaBurke & Wills remote area in April he took on a region of Southwest Queensland that has been among the hardest hit by the prolonged drought. It is also a region of 450,000 sqkms area with around 330 remote properties and 23 communities or small country towns. Cain immediately hit the road, travelling across the rough outback roads and tracks to knock on doors and introduce himself to farmers he had been told “need a visit.” Visiting shops, caravan parks, parks, pubs, aged care homes and hospitals is all part of being ‘present’ to offer emotional and practical support. Cain and his wife, Jacki, have also attended the iconic outback events in his area to promote the work of Frontier Services, including the Big Red Bash in Birdsville, Pre-Bash in Charleville and NAIDOC week in Cunnamulla.
