EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR’S LETTER ront Page Magazine is an urban lifestyle magazine catering to Canada's entertainment and entrepreneurial community in further detail; we will conduct interviews, cover events and write editorials for companies that need additional exposure. Front Page Magazine is being used as a marketing tool for Front Page Management Inc., which is an entertainment management company, and at the same time we will open it up to the public so that they can use our magazine as an outlet to market their talent and showcase their businesses through interviews and advertising. I know Front Page Magazine will be an asset to the entertainers who don’t get showcased due to the lack of options available to the individual who has no knowledge of marketing. Front Page Magazine will give them that option through positive networking. This issue was a special and unique one for us at Front Page Magazine. We took time out and considered all the topics that we should go in-depth on The majority of the content that you will read about is what we face on a day to day basis in the urban community. My team spent hours on end developing articles which we know will allow you to stop and think, also obtain useful knowledge that you might not have been aware about. I’m going to give you a quick rundown of some of the topics that we wrote about and why we felt it was necessary. The child obesity article was written because we felt people needed to know that children face this problem, and that it is a disease plaguing our youth and without the proper knowledge to face this problem head on we will see the increase in this disease destroy our young ones. Over the past weeks, we have been in contact with the founder of Youth Day, we got invited to attend a press conference to get more information on the event, and we were impressed to see the amount of talent we have in the city and the mind state of the youth today. In this issue, you will find a press release that will allow you to be a part of the experience that we have had the pleasure of being a part of. The entertainment section I know will keep your eye's glues to the page. We included a Roberta flock editorial that will blow your mind in the sense of. The Growing Movement … Rhythm and Blues hythm and Blues has over 70 years of boasting rights; it’s filled with soulful music that captures the ears of music lovers of all generations. There has been no other genre that continues to grow not only in popularity but in definition. Taking on many adaptations, artists try to find their own rhythm in an era filled with change and progression.

guitars and harmonicas are the instruments of choice. Blues was first recorded in the 1920s. When recording companies recognized the potential of blues, which was called race music at the time they began recording and marketing it towards the African-American community. These recordings were passionate and soulful, mainly recorded by individual singers while playing an acoustic guitar. Mamie Smith recorded the first vocal blues song; this was the first recording by an African American. When she recorded “Crazy Blues” in 1920, she forever engraved her mark in blues history.

Rhythm and Blues has a long history, the genre known as Blues music primarily of the “Deep South” was sung among the African- American slaves. The origin is closely linked to the religious music of the Afro- American community spirituals or “Negro spirituals," which go further back to the middle 18th century when slaves were Christianized by the efforts to de- Africanize them through forbidding them to speak their native tongue.

The development of Delta blues was passed down orally, in written form and later into recordings. There was little recording done within the Mississippi area, instead Delta blues musicians such as; Charley Patton and Skip James headed to northern cities for recording sessions before returning to their homes. Delta blues men of the 20s and 30s paved the way with their influence on the next generation of Mississippi greats like Muddy Waters, whom took the style of music north to cities like Chicago and Detroit.

Unable to express themselves freely without the fear of punishment, they created “bush meetings." Bush meetings were secret meeting place. They used this as an escape outlet also as a place of creation. It was during this time that work songs and Christian hymns were created, for a way of hope, expression of defeat, victory and a way of communication with each other. Selfexpression, and togetherness by way of music was all they had left and this was their way of passing ones strength to the other. Blues music is the music of rural south, notably the Mississippi Delta or the “Delta Blues." Mississippi is regarded as the birthplace of this category of music. Blues is one of the earliest styles of this genre; where

Chicago Blues marked the transformation of country blues into urban blues, which the blacks of the south brought with them as they migrated to the north known as the “Great Migration “during the Great Depression. Since the clubs and crowds were bigger Delta Blues musicians altered their instruments of choice and performance style in order to captive, the audience. These minor tweaks gave birth to a whole new style of the blues, one that was even more dominating then it predecessor. These musicians found that making the harmonica louder with the aid of a

microphone and by adding electrically amplified guitars, amplified bass guitars, drums, piano and sometimes the saxophone. As this style of music began to gain popularity, more and more clubs began to populate featuring this genre. It was no longer considered music for blacks living in the south side of Chicago; soon enough there were clubs in the north side and more white men playing the blues.

most well-known performer of the Delta blues sound( also recorded numerous songs under the names Texas Slim, Delta John and of course, his own name, Elmore James, Junior Kimbrough, and not to mention Muddy Waters although he is more known as a Chicago Blues musician, but started his blues journey in his place of birth the Mississippi.

By the 1970s it was then used as a blanket term for soul and funk. By the 1980s, a newer style of R&B formed, becoming known as “Contemporary R&B” which is a combination of elements such as pop, the black era of swing, boogie-woogie rhythm, country jazz, hip hop, R&B and funk. The 1980s marked the end of the disco era, paving the way for Contemporary R&B or as we notably call it ‘R&B’. In the early stages of Contemporary R&B the music produced was very pop- oriented and had that record production style to it. The 80s produced such artist as Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston and Michael and Janet Jackson. By the end of this time period, the style of R&B and hip hop rhythms was termed “new jack swing” with groups like Boyz ll Men, and Jodeci incorporating hip hop into their work. These groups became pioneers of what R &B is today.

Chicago blues musicians include but are not limited to; Howlin Wolf, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Luther Allison; predominantly an electric guitarist and a singer, recording many albums for Chicago based Alligator Records, Father and sons Lonnie Brooks, Wayne Brooks and Ronnie brooks; performed at each other shows, George “Mojo” Buford; whom sometime played in Muddy Waters’ band. R and B has changed over the years but the artists who continue to use it as a way of expressing themselves stay the same. As long as they keep the passion this style of music will live on for ever. The Sources for this writing are provided below:

So You Think You Can Rap Canada? very day, a star is born in this great country, and Front Page Magazine prides ourselves on being there to say, “we saw it for ourselves." You tube is flooded with rappers who strive to be the best at their craft but do you think that you can rap? This is a questioned that got answered on Friday July 13th at Pacha lounge located at 1305 Dundas St west, Toronto Ontario. At this event, a portion of Ontario rappers battled it out for a chance to win a grand prize of 5,000 thousand dollars, but first finalists of this event will have to compete in other cities and venues for that victory.

As you stepped into the venue, you could feel the tension in the air, everyone who was competing was hungry for that chance to boast about being the best rapper. Before the event started the host for the night “Get Stoked” introduced the judges. The judges were introduced one by one highlighting their credibility. The first judge was dj rad who produced for 50 cents, jada kiss and was mentored by the late great Geru from Gangstar. Second was Smokey from Smoke Shop Productions, he produced for Grave Diggaz, Infamous Mobb, Beanie Man, Buju Banton and various Canadian artists. The Third judge was Julz from str888 Fiaa Promotionz , they all came out to do their job and separate the strong from the weak. Contestants came hard all night by delivering track after track and punch line after

punch line with only one thing on their mind, and that was advance to the next level of competition. All the contestants represented with their own unique style and stage presence. The contestants were J Adams, Supa Fiend, DB Chase, Shae Marie, MC Tri Shy, Avi, Homage, Consious Con, Sos Couture, J Jones, Iseburg, J Don, Young Streets, Bunlo, Air Blaq, and D Skinns. Front Page Magazine felt that the line-up was strong and well put together. Honestly, there was so much talent being released under one roof and everyone deserved to go to the next round, unfortunately there are rules to the game. Only the selected few moved on to the next round, and they are: MC Tri Shy, J Adams, Sos Couture, Supa Fiend, Shae Marie, J Jones, Young Streets, DB Chase, and Avi. The night was a success; the people in attendance got to see a really good show and see Toronto’s talent first hand especially during intermission when they had performers rock the stage with club bangers. The intermission performers were IMG’s Young Grove and Baad Ass Bukk, K Fresh, Nene Couture, J.O.K, and S.O.J. We loved the concept and the idea as to which this competition is going in, and this has the potential to be a reputable source for new talent, so let’s keep it moving from city to city until it becomes an annual event. Front Page Magazine really appreciates good events, and we would like to take this time to show the promoters some love… shout-out to D Waters and Mz Cashmere, its individuals like you that keep hip hop alive. Keep reading Front Page Magazine for the next show date and venue for your chance to be a part of “so you think you can rap Canada?” FPM -A.H

Despite being one of the youngest students ever enroll there she graduated from Howard University at age 19; she started her graduate studies in music, where she studied until the untimely death of her father.

Many may know the song “Killing Me Softly” that became the bestselling single in the country in 1996, for The Fugees album ``The Score``, with Lauryn Hill singing lead vocals. Feeding off of the success of the Fugees remix Roberta Flacks 1972 recording was remixed that year; topping the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2008, ranking 25 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop” and #44 on its “100 Greatest Songs of the 90s’’.

For the next 12 years Ms. Flack spent countless nights and weekends when she was not teaching students in (Washington, DC at Browne Junior High and Rabaut Junior High) she was accompanying opera singers on the piano at the Tivoli club. Utilizing intermissions; she performed blues, folk, and pop standard (Popular music that predates rock and roll in the mid- 1950s or any popular music, which exists concurrently to rock and roll. The term “standard” can also be described as any popular song that has become known mainstream). Not stopping there she began to perform a few nights a week at Club 1520. During this time, she began to find herself with the help of her voice instructor whom suggested that she would be a star in pop

Roberta Flacks originally sang this song in 1972 for the first time while opening for Marvin Gaye, where he asked her to perform another song. She replied “I got this song I’ve been working on called “Killing Me Softly." Getting the go ahead from Gaye, she performed it, the crowd went crazy, prompting Gaye to walk over to Roberta telling her “Baby, don’t ever do that song again live until you record it.” That she did releasing it in January of 1973 titled “Killing Me Softly With His Song” off the album holding the same name; spent five non-consecutive weeks at number one within the first three months of being out and four straight weeks on top of the Billboard’s hot 100.

It was Ms. Flack that gave this song the soulful lift it needed to become a master piece that not only deserved but demanded to be remixed. It is said she took such pride in her work that she once demanded that her record company recall 500,000 copies of her “Killing Me softly with His Song” Album, so she could offer her listener a different ending. Her overall dedication did not stop there also becoming actively involved throughout the development of her music on a business level; where the singer selected, arranged, conducted and edited her own recording materials in the mid- 1970s.

Even down to the album cover is done according to the title with him sitting on a chair holding a violin. The mix tape is called “Last symphony and it has 16 tracks on it. I personally listened to his album and was truly amazed at how he displayed his technique. When listening to the mix tape you can feel him put his heart and soul into his music. As I was going through the songs, I realized that we might have a super star coming out of Toronto if he remains focused and determined. Front page magazine had the opportunity to see Epic perform at the youth day press conference which was held @ now lounge, located at 189 Church and he showcased his talent with confidence. We need more artists like epic the grand who want to be entertainers and not only rappers. To see Epic The Grand perform come down to youth day at young and Dundas Square on July 22nd 2012.

FASHION

THE FASHION FILES oday’s fashion is definitely something to expand on when it comes to; name brands, sizes, and designers whom we have available to us. First and for most we would like to give a well-respected solute to those who have the gift to create these trends. Fashion doesn’t determine the person, but it does give an individual a sense of notarized exposure if they are well put together.

To describe fashion would not make any sense because everyone is diverse in this category. Swag… what is swag? To us, swag is the ability to draw attention to yourself when you enter a room. It could be from your hat to your shoes, shirt, pants, jewelry, etc. As long as you can let the public know that you are fresh to death, and that you have a sense of style “you are swag”. Coordination is a thing of the past. In this day and age, this day and age folks don’t need to match for the life of them and can still be well dressed to impress. Trends are also a form of swag, which lets people show that they are feeling your look. When individual’s dress the way you do; you now have the right to call yourself a trend setter.

Toronto has many designers who are on the rise, and with that being said we give them the support they need, to strive to be the best.

In the late 90s and the early 2000’s size was a big thing” literally," now it’s all about fitted clothing that define your image, to a degree. It’s so ironic that the 80s is repeating itself with the sizing, and the bright colors that they use to sport; the only thing that’s missing from that era is the shoulder pads and Jerry curls.

Toronto fashion designer Curtis James the owner of We Sew Sick Designs and tailor's clothing from out of a shop which is at 50 Kennedy road, in south Brampton. His urban wear is unique in style, and his logo is definitely catchy and easy on the eye. Another up-and-coming designer is Big Rox clothing, which is an urban clothing line based in Toronto. The owner and founder of this line is John H. They design clothing that will be worn by many Torontonians and has already been worn by some big names around the city such as Drake, Don Million, Slow Motion, Victory, and Mia Martina. Furthermore, a name taking the streets of Toronto is Shoe Box Mentality. The owner/president Is Mattsman; he originates from Toronto, with colorful and trend-setting clothing this is a line to watch for and keep an ear to the ground on. Shoe Box Mentality has exclusively been making a name for itself in Toronto and in the United States. Those are just a few of the up-andcoming designers. “The amount of clothing designers in our rapidly growing city is endless."

Bottom line fashion can’t be defined, continue to be yourself and always dress for success, whether it’s for school or work. Remember clothes don’t make the person; the person makes the clothes. FPM - A.H

What is the name of your business? Realeza Image and Wellness Consultants Means Royalty in Spanish and my tag line is “discovering your royalty with in.” I feel that everyone has royalty within them, and they should feel royal.

What made you decide to start a business in image consulting? Due to my modeling background and being the fashion industry for some time I chose to be an image consultant. “I enjoy dressing and helping individuals look their best now that I am not modeling”

What type of Business is it? What are the aspects of what you are trying to accomplish?

It’s a Sole Proprietorship How long have you been in business? I feel like I’ve been in the business my whole life, basically I been giving advice to friends since I was a teen. My Business was officially registered and active since April 2012. I have also been trained and George brown College, and I have been certificated for 6 years. Also I am member of the association of image consultants international

which is included to better their health on their journey to looking good. When marketing, does your wellness assessment come off as an added bonus to your clients? Yes. It’s the foundation of what I build my business on. What is your targeted audience? My Target audience is very board. I focus on young people, young professionals who are entering the work force that are not too sure how to dress for job interviews. “Dress to success” is the motto Where do you see your company within the next 5 years? I see it expanding greatly in the next five years. I am already looking for interns. I would love to have staff and a couple more image consultants; I want to have my own office because as of right now it is a homebased business. I feel a strong online presence is a big thing right now. I am really excited as to what I am offering to my community and to my peers, as I strongly believe that everyone should have an opportunity to feeling good and confident when they step out the door. Tell us a little about the people you work with and the comments you receive after u have changed a person’s image? I feel like, a lot of the feedback I get from meeting people and telling them about what I do, is excitement. As soon as I sit down and ask “what is it that you would like to accomplish?”, “what is it that you would like to achieve?”, and “what brought you to me?” When they start to explain to me what it is that they would like and I start to

explain to them that that is totally 100 percent achievable and start to show them the transformation of what could happen once the process is started. It is really just excites my clients. I feel like that is the most full filling thing for me to see how excited they get about the journey I am about to take them on. And so that is the most important part. What type of marketing tools do you use or tell them as reference/ background to show them? Let them know my schooling, even though I feel like it is not something that I need to show them, if I am put together meaning polished , my appearance is poised and my confidence is there; then they will just know that I know what I’m doing. I also went through a government- funded entrepreneur program that helps launch businesses. What type of technique used when putting someone style together? It depends of what service the client is looking for. For a color analyzes I use different techniques; different slides and tools it is a bit complex where the lighting is different. There is also style and body analyze where you have to be taken full body measurement to see, determining what body type a person is ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph based on their bone structure. What separates you from the other companies that offer the same services? Immediately, what separates me is that I include the wellness, as a mention before you can Google a million images consultants and you will see that they do not offer the wellness component. I think that immediately separates me away from the rest of the other image consultants and gives

me a competitive advantage when it comes to the services that I offer. I just don’t offer the basic wardrobe audit. I think that having the strong fashion background that I have and being in the industry from a fashion end, when it comes to styling and fashion, I am very confident that I know my stuff.

Has anyone ever seen you after awards, and you get to see if they kept up the image?

Where can people find you? Website: www.realezaimage.com Twitter: @ realezaimage Facebook:www.facebook.com/realezaimage Number: (647) 219-4194

Yes, people do. I rarely find people that do not take my advice and apply it to their lifestyle. To me this is the most important part; I mean I can make anyone look good for the moment, But really and truly after I am done doing what I am doing; they have the rest of their lives to say wow. You just have to take what I taught you and apply it to your lifestyle. That goes for fashion, style and the wellness portion as well. How does your price range for your services and what each package in tales? I have many different services and packages; for example: You would be looking at $100 to $110 for a Color analysis that may last anywhere from 45 mins to an hour and a half maximum, Wardrobe audit can range around the $200 range and take a lot longer where I go in and rearrange your closet and a few other things. Most of the services in general or packages deals will range anywhere from $100 to $350 dollars depending on hours and package deals

I love anything/everything to do with fashion, music the arts; really just love anything to do with the arts I am really, really into that. What is the name of your business? The name of my business is Fabulash Beauty Bar; it’s a mobile eye lash extension company.

How did you come up with that name? I came up with that name because I know for women going out, make up and eye lashes are a big part, especially for women who do not wear a lot of makeups, they always want their eye lashes to pop and look fabulous. So for me, it was an important thing for them to feel fabulous. My slogan is “Feeling fabulash with every blink." What type of business is it? Fabulash is a Sole Proprietorship business.

How long have you been in business for? It’s actually been running for a year and a half now, so the business is very new. I have had this idea for quite a while, and I said I was going to push through with it. It came about because a lot of women were coming up to me asking if my eye lashes were real, or if I was wearing extensions because my lashes are very long. I started to research eye lash extension and do my research and found out that it is actual a million dollar business. The company I choose to do my training with, they started their business in Texas; it was something that I wanted to accomplish. What are you trying to accomplish within the next 5 years? I want to get myself out there; I want fablush definitely be a house hold name among women and to be a name; women can relate to. I want them to see the logo and understand that every woman can feel fabulous whether it is a woman working at an office, lawyers, any type of career you hold I want women from all walks of life to feel fabulash. Is there a preference with whom you want to work with? I do prefer to work with women who are more in their 20s. I prefer to work with people in their 20s. I do not discriminate against one because of their age, a lot of my clients are different ages, and that’s fine.

Tell us about the people you work with that have done anything in the industry? I have not done anyone famous yet, but I have done eyelashes for vocal coaches and women who are doing photo shoots. One of my clients had an appearance on TV for one of those wedding shows, and I’ve done lashes for clients going away for destination weddings. What Techniques do you use? Techniques that I use to do eye lash is pretty complex to explain it. I do individual eyelash extension, so I attach extensions to each individual eyelash. It is a process that can take anywhere between 2 -3 1/2 hours. Do your clients have to have a certain type of look? If I was personally buying something and I ask the sales person for their opinion, then I would want them to be honest with me no matter how brutal it may be. That’s just me personally, I gravitate more to people that are blunt because I am blunt myself. With eye lash extension I will accept anyone though, there are some people due to health issue, I know that their eyelashes are not strong enough to hold the extension, so to protect them, I will let them know I can’t do your lashes until we get them healthier I will help them take the steps to get there lashes healthy enough to adhere to the extensions. I will do anyone from all walks of life if they are interested in it then I will help them with. What separate me from other companies? I am mobile, so I travel throughout the GTA; it doesn’t matter where they are. On some occasion, I will even make trips outside the GTA there has to be special arrangement made, and my hours are very flexible. I book by appoints; I also do a lot of emergency calls too, anywhere for 24 to 48 hour booking window. I work around my client’s schedule where a lot of other places you have to go burn gas, wait in traffic where I come to you with my portal massage spa table the lights so you are still getting the professional spa service but its your home, office, studio where ever.

Do you also do make up? I do not really focus on makeup I can do make-up and hair but my main focus is the eye lash extensions. I'm starting to get in to doing Shellac nails so I also offer the Shellac nail services. Make-up and hair styling will come later on Do you see this being a career? I definitely feel that way; it's an escape for me and like I said I like anything to do with fashion, makeup or anything artsy. So I definitely do want this to be a career for me a full spa location FRONTPAGEMANAGEMENT.COM | JULY 2012 33

what I am thinking in the future.

What about anyone working with you? It is just me, with the eye extension quality is a big thing for me, a lot of time I have been told I was not expecting this, and I gave them more. HEALTH environment is loaded with high-calorie foods in school vending machines, at fast-food restaurants, at corner convenience stores, and even in kitchen cupboards in their own homes. With all these different types of high-calorie snacks, fruits and vegetables are easily ignored and replaced with graband-go foods eaten on the run such as potato chips, cookies, candy, and sugary drinks. Children are getting less nutritious in their daily diet due to the fact that a proper home-cooked meal is skipped and replaced with fast foods loaded with too many calories and fat.

WHAT IS CHILD OBESITY? besity is a medical condition that is defined as excessive body fat that, has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect upon your health. One is considered obese once their weight is 20% or more above-normal weight, which is based on the body mass index (BMI); the index takes account your age, height and weight.

According to Statistics Canada in 2007/2009, a higher percentage of boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 19 falling into the “needs improvement” category for flexibility and muscular strength compared to their 1981 counterparts. Alarming increases tripling among both sexes in classification of being overweight or obese, of boys from 14% to 31& and 14% to 25% in girls.

“Morbid obesity” is when a person is between 50% - 100% over normal weight, meaning more than 100 pounds over normal weight, and has a BMI of 40 or higher. There are three classes of obesity ranging from obesity class I to class III. • obese class I (30.0 to 34.9 kg) • obese class II (35.0 to 39.9 kg) • obese class III (40.0 kg or more)

Furthermore, in comparison was the average height at 12 years of age, from 1981 to now, we are taller and larger with body composition being less healthy. Overall about 5cm taller and 6.4 kg larger in boys; while girls are 2.8 cm taller and weights 4.9 kg more.

The World Health Organization (WHO),

and Health Canada and Obesity Canada, breaking the body mass index down into five high-risk divisions.

Child obesity is a very complex condition with many interrelated causes. Environmental factors, Genetic factors, Dietary habits, socioeconomic status, Physical in activity lifestyle preferences, and cultural environment play essential roles in the rising prevalence of obesity that is running rampant across Canada.

• normal weight (18.5 to 24.9 kg) • overweight (25.0 to 29.9 kg) Child obesity has become an "epidemic" among Canadian children and adolescent, over the past 25 years the obesity rate has tripled. In 1978/1979 the levels for children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 that were overweight/obese as per their BMI was 15% compared to 26% in 2004. Based on those alarming numbers it should not be of shock that 59% of adult Canadians are either overweight/obese. Childhood obesity foundation gave these statistics:

Child obesity needs to start with the family setting a foundation when it comes to making healthy food choose. Children are vulnerable to their environment because they have fewer abilities to shape it. Kids don’t have control over what they’re given to eat, and children tend to have similar eating habits and physical activity patterns as their parents. Parents remember that children learn best by example and live by the playground motto “monkey see monkey do," so if parents are not living a healthy life style at home. How must we expect our children to learn how to make healthy food choose in the future.

Obesity rates continue to increase into adulthood. • Approximately 1/3 of normal weight 20 year olds will become overweight within eight years • Approximately 1/3 of overweight 20 year olds will become obese within eight years

A child's total diet and activity level play an important role in determining a child's weight. Children of the 21st century spend a lot of their leisure time watching television, using the computer, and playing video games. Children who watch the most hours of television have the highest incidence of obesity. This trend is apparent not only because little energy is expended while viewing television but also

If this trend continues, in 20 years, we can expect 70% of the 35 -44 year olds in Canada to be overweight/obese vs. 57% who are currently overweight/obese. We are living in a time where our children’s

HEALTH poultry. Use low-fat or non-fat milk products (except for children younger than 2 years old). - Keep healthy snack foods in the house, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and low-salt and low-fat pretzels. - Involve kids in shopping for and preparing meals. Children like to eat what they’ve helped prepare. Don’t take them down the candy or snack food aisles.

because of the concurrent consumption of highcalorie snacks. As computers and video games become increasingly popular, the number of hours of inactivity may increase resulting in a worldwide epidemic. Obese children face a higher risk of health problems in the short term, including but not limited to; hypertension, glucose intolerance and orthopedic complications, as well as issues concerning social acceptance, body image and self-esteem. Even more serious health conditions await them as adults, since childhood obesity is associated with diabetes, heart disease and other problems.

Children are very emotional at a young age and tend to act on how they feel. When kids are happy, they are more likely to make healthy life changes because they feel good about themselves. Help your children find things to do that make them feel valuable. It might be community volunteer work, visiting the elderly neighbor down the street, helping grandma clean her yard, or pursuing a special interest such as art or music. Point out your children's strengths and help them develop their own interests and abilities.

Obese children and youth are also more likely to be obese as adults; in fact, the majority continue to gain weight as they age. Leading to other health issues such as; high blood pressure, strokes, cancer, heart disease, liver disease, type two diabetes and dementia. An adult of the same age at a normal weight is expected to live seven years longer than an adult who is obese or over weight.

What does all this truly mean? It means that our current generation of children may live shorter lives than their parents. It is imperative that we come together as a nation to stop this epidemic known as child obesity, so that our children can live a healthier lifestyle and not shorten their overall life span. FPM

TREATMENT Dieting and physical exercise are the main treatment for obesity. Anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption together with a suitable diet. If diet, exercise and medication are not effective, a gastric balloon may assist with weight loss, or surgery may be performed to reduce stomach volume or bowel length, leading to earlier saturation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food. Reversing obesity and its health risks requires changing the habits of a lifetime. Eating less over a long period of time simply means learning to think about your eating habits and patterns.

he Harry Jerome Awards has captured the true essence of what the man to whom it owes its name strived to be. Henry “Harry” Jerome born September 30, 1940 to December 7, 1982 was a Canadian Track and field sprinter who competed for Canada in the 1960, 1964, and 1968 Summer Olympics. Mr. Jerome took great pride in his sense of determination and dedication to his sport, and his beliefs that blacks should be treated equally on all platforms. Mr. Jerome never believed his critics but always strived to do right by himself and his community. With such a stellar career, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind when in his honour The Labatts International Track Classic Pre-Olympic meet was renamed the Harry Jerome International Track Classic in 1984.

One can only imagine what it must be like for the winners of such a prestigious award, the humbleness, sense of pride and the great accomplishment towards what they have managed to achieve. With winning such an award their names will be forever engraved in the minds of those that came before and those aspiring to be them. WHAT IS DIABETES iabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes is a form of metabolic disorder, referring to how our bodies use digested food for energy and growth.

finish eating, the pancreas releases an adequate quality of insulin, which moves the glucose present in our bloodstream to cells and lowers the blood sugar levels. CAUSE. RISK FACTORS

The three main types of diabetes (DM) are:

When you’re a diabetic, you have a condition where the glucose level in your blood is highly elevated (hyperglycemia). This is because, the body either fails to respond to its own insulin, or it does not make enough insulin, or both. This causes glucose to accumulate in the blood and can lead to various health complications, if left untreated or poorly managed. This may result in a wide variety of complications such as; heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye diseases, nerve damage. Other serious complications are: cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure and diabetic retinopathy (retinal damage).

Type 1 DM: Results from the body’s failure to produce insulin, and presently requires the person to inject insulin. Type 2 DM: Results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes with an absolute insulin deficiency, Types 3: Gestational diabetes is when pregnant women, whom never had diabetes before, have a high blood-glucose level during pregnancy. After eating a meal most of what we eat is broken down and your glucose level rises. Glucose is a simple sugar found in most of the foods we eat, an essential nutrient that provides energy for the proper functioning of the body’s cells.

Genes are only one factor in a very complex web of causes leading to why African- Canadians are more prone to developing type 2 diabetes.

Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells within the pancreas as a stabilizing feature to normalize the elevation of our glucose level. This means that once we

For pure agreement sake let’s just focus on nature. Our African ancestors have passed down their genes that affect insulin secretion and insulin resistance. Those same genes make us more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes. Other factor includes lack of exercise, and dietary chooses.

Type 1 and 2 are chronic medical conditions, which are treatable but last a life time. Treatment depends on the type and severity of diabetes you area diagnosis with. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, (which became medically available in 1921), exercise, and a diabetic diet.

The African- Canadian culture consumes a lot of carbohydrates and sodium in most of the food we eat. If you know what soul food is, then you know it’s a slow but affective way to develop diabetes. Cooking with massive amounts of oil and sugar is notorious for clogging the arteries,

Type 2 diabetes is first treated with weight reduction, with a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, insulin medications are considered. FPM
