2015-16 Preview
Talented Trio Will Lead Eagles Back during his college days in Ohio, one of Kevin Cook’s favorite bands was Earth, Wind & Fire. As he sends his Winthrop Eagles into the 2015-16 season, Cook has his own version of that well-known group in his dynamic trio of 6-3 senior center Schaquilla Nunn, 5-10 junior forward Erica Williams and 5-8 junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick. Nunn and Williams have been picked preseason All-Big South First Team selections while Kilpatrick is a All-BSC Second Team pick. No other team in the conference has as many preseason all-conference selections. While Cook won’t go as far to say the trio gives the Eagles something other teams in the league don’t have, he is certainly grateful to have them. “I am happy that they have been recognized and they have shown they can back that up. They just go about their business and never make a big deal about individual awards,” Cook says. “We have a great defender in Aliyah Kilpatrick who has gotten quicker than she was last year. Her ability to penetrate and hit big shots has been a trademark,” he says. “Erica gives us someone we can feed and we feel pretty confident she’s gonna deliver, and I look for Schaquilla Nunn to have her best year.” Closely Knit Team After watching the Eagles put together the program’s fourth straight winning season last year with 17-13 overall and 13-7 Big South records, Cook believes this year’s team is more closely knit than a year ago and has a common goal of “togetherness.” Williams was the second-leading scorer in the Big South last year with a 16.4 average. She came up just 23 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point career mark in just two seasons. In what is probably the Winthrop coach’s big-
Junior forward Erica Williams Is 23 points away from reaching 1,000 points. gest understatement of the preseason, he says he is happy to have Williams back. “Erica is a natural scorer and she does a lot of things well. One of the things that goes overlooked is her ability to pass the basketball. She’s an excellent passer and makes good decisions.” Nunn averaged a double-double with her 13.6 points and 11.1 rebound averages. She shattered the school career and single season blocked shot records and enters this season with 279 blocked shots in her first three years. Nunn ranked 9th in the nation
for blocks per game with 3.6 and was 15th nationally in rebounding. She needs 18 points to join the 1,000-point club. Cook says Nunn has come back this year in tremendous shape and has been really good in the preseason individual workouts. “Schaquilla is on a mission to have a great senior year,” her coach says. Although she earned honorable mention allconference recognition last year after averaging 12.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4

Junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick is fully recovered from a achilles heel injury and is expected to provide offense and strong defense this season. steals per game, Kilpatrick was not completely recovered from achilles tendon surgery that forced her to miss the 2013-14 season. Kilpatrick Is All The Way Back From Injury “Aliyah is all the way back from her injury and will be a force on both sides of the ball,” says Cook. Kilpatrick is more than capable of playing either guard position. During an outstanding freshman year in 2012-13 she received valuable experience at both guard positions. As a starting two guard alongside all-time Big South scoring leader Dequesha McClanahan, Kilpatrickt averaged 10.5 points and 2.5 assists, and was a solid ball handler in her first year. She enters her junior season with 686 career points, 164 assists and 145 steals. The question in most Eagle fans minds is whether this trio can lead Winthrop to its second Big South championship in three years. The league’s head coaches believe Winthrop will challenge for the title
Togetherness Brings Success as they have picked the Eagles second in the annual preseason poll behind perennial Big South power Liberty. One thing is certain as Winthrop weaves its way toward tournament time. No one in the conference will play a tougher non-conference schedule that includes road games at Oklahoma, Duke, preseason No. 1 South Carolina, Auburn and a November appearance in the Akron tournament where they will face the host Zips and Ohio. Add to that mix, road games at Furman and College of Charleston and you have a very formidable schedule. Solid Year Expected From Banks Cook is looking for a good, solid season from sophomore point guard Jimecheia Banks. Cook says she has been working extremely hard to earn a shot at the starting point guard spot. He is also happy to have the Jackson twins back for their sophomore seasons. “Both Naima and Nuba are like energizer bunnies. They can defend and can get up and down the court in our fast break style,” he says. Cook is looking for returning 6-1 power forward Ezinne Mbamalu to have a solid sophomore campaign after gaining valuable experience as a freshman. Also added to the inside game this season will be 6-2 freshman forward Arianne Whitaker, a highly-touted player out of Cincinnati’s Lakota West H.S., the 2015 Ohio Class 5A state champions. Another player returning from last year is 5-9 junior wing CiiCii Buford, who played in 21 games and can provide some scoring punch. Cook also has two redshirt sophomores back in 6-0 forward Ronata Rogers and 6-2 post player Brianna Boyd. Rogers has fully recovered from ACL surgery while Boyd has overcome a back injury. Two Walk-Ons May Help The Eagles also have two freshmen walk-ons who could provide some depth at the guard and post positions. They are 6-2 forward/center Kayla Atkins from Westwood H.S. in Columbia, SC, and 5-8 shooting guard Courtney Wood from Wando H.S. in Charleston, SC. Atkins is a proven rebounder on the scholastic level as she set a school single game record last year with 25 rebounds. Wood also played AAU ball and proved her shooting ability by connecting on nine 3-pointers in a game.
Senior Schaquilla Nunn is on the cusp of reaching 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in her career. Winthrop also had two transfers join the program, but both are required to sit out this year due to NCAA rules. They include 6-2 guard/forward DaChe Williams, who played at Northeastern University in Boston, and 5-4 shooting guard Victoria Leroy from Mars Hill University.
2015-16 Women’s Basketball This Year’s Team Strengths Cook says that with the schedule his team faces, the ability to rebound is going to be critical each and every game. “We cannot allow multiple shots because we will be playing many teams that are bigger than us. We’ve got to be able to box out and hold our ground. At the same time, we’ve got to be able to crash the offensive boards,” he said. “Our man-to-man defense will be a strength this year. We have made a commitment to it.” He says the Eagles have also added depth that people didn’t see last year. A Look At The Conference Race As far as Winthrop’s selection to finish second in the Big South race, Cook says he believes that is nice for the media and fans. “It creates discussion and anything that creates discussion helps our women’s game. “Liberty is always so talented. Coach (Kerry) Green does a nice job. They only lost one in conference last year so I believe they are the obvious choice to repeat because they have so many players returning. We are glad to be in that conversation along with Campbell, High Point and Radford. Gardner-Webb may be overlooked. I’m just hoping we can get to the conference schedule healthy,” said Cook. “Our schedule may just be the toughest in the history of Winthrop women’s basketball. They talk
Togetherness Brings Success about South Carolina being a possible No. 1 ranked team. You talk about Oklahoma who gave Stanford a tussle in the NCAA tournament. Auburn is going to be looking for revenge and then we go to Cameron Indoor also to face Duke.” Cook says he doesn’t want to overlook the tournament in Ohio where the Eagles will face Akron and Ohio University, two very tough opponents, and Furman who defeated the Eagles at home last year. “I’m excited about the schedule and I am excited

about our team,” said Cook. “They (the team) have done everything that we’ve asked and when you have a team that has bought in you can do some special things.” New Rules Installed For Women Something that Cook and followers of the women’s game will look forward to this season are the rules changes proposed by a panel and adopted by the NCAA. The Eagle head coach believe the new rules will help the game overall. The women will play four 10-minute quarters this year as opposed to two 20-minute halves and media timeouts will occur after the five-minute mark of each quarter. Teams will also be able to inbound the ball in the front court if they call a timeout following the opponent’s made basket in the final minute of the game. “I’m looking forward to the four quarters versus the two halves and I am looking forward to the rule that advances the ball to front court,” said Cook. “I have been in favor of that rule change for several years.” Another key rule change involves the 10-second count when a team is trying to advance the ball past the mid-court line. Unlike last year when the 10-second count would be reset if a team called a timeout before reaching mid-court, the count will now resume where it stopped should a team request a timeout. “I like that rule as well,” says Cook. “Teams that play good full court defense have not been rewarded in the past because the team bringing the ball up court could signal for a timeout to avoid a 10-second count violation.” The panel approved a rule that allows teams to advance the ball to the frontcourt following a timeout immediately after a made basket in the last 59.9 seconds of the fourth quarter and any overtime periods. Teams also will be allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt after securing the ball from a rebound or a change of possession. In these scenarios, the ball would be inbounded at the 28-foot mark on the side of the court where the scorer’s table is located..

evin Cook is in his fourth season as head coach of the Winthrop women’s basketball program after guiding the Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Tournament and Big South Conference Championship in 2014 as they reached an all-time best RPI of 85 in the nation. His three-year Winthrop record stands at 62-34 after the Eagles achieved back-to-back 20-plus win seasons for the first time in school history and a 1713 mark in 2014-15. The former four-time WNBA world champion became the 14th head coach in program history after accepting the position on June 5, 2012 following one year as an assistant coach. In 2013-14, Cook directed Winthrop to its finest season ever as a NCAA Division I member as the Eagles finished 24-9 enroute to capturing the Big South Tournament title and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2013-14 success came a year after Cook led the Eagles to only their second post-season appearance and first post-season victory since becoming a NCAA school

in 1985 as they earned a spot in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament and defeated Florida Gulf Coast in the first round on the road. As a result of Winthrop’s successful season in 2012-13, Cook was named one of three NCAA Mid-Major Rookie Head Coaches of the Year. During his one year as a Winthrop assistant, he helped guide the Eagles to an 18-13 record. In 2014-15, Cook led the Eagles to their fourth straight winning season as they finished with a 17-13 record. Cook’s experience goes beyond the collegiate level as he was on the staff for 10 years of the Houston Comets dynasty of the WNBA. The Comets captured the first four WNBA championships and made the playoffs nine out of the first 10 years. He also served as an assistant coach for the victorious West squad in the WNBA’s first three All-Star games. For capturing its championships, Cook accompanied the Comets players and coaches to four different White House visits where the teams were recognized for their achievements. Cook was able to meet former president’s George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush during his time with the Comets. On July 23, 2011 the WNBA released its Top 15 players of All-Time list and four Comet players that Cook coached made the list (Sheryl Swoopes, Dawn Staley, Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson). Another of his former Comet stars, Brazilian great Janeth Arcain, will be enshrined in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame on June 13 of next summer. Prior to his arrival with the Houston Comets, Cook served as an Associate Head Coach for the University of Houston from 1995-97. From 1983-1993, Cook was an assistant coach at the University of Kansas under Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer, Marian E. Washington. During his time in Lawrence, Cook helped the Jayhawks to four conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and two WNIT berths. Immediately prior to arriving at Winthrop, Cook

spent four seasons as the head coach of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. where he led his team to a 24-4 record during the 2010-11 season and was named the WBCA Region III Coach of the Year. Gallaudet is the world’s only all-deaf college. Cook’s international coaching experience comes from having led the Nigeria women’s basketball national team. He coached the Nigerian national team in the 2006 World Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil and in 2007 he helped guide the team to a 7-1 record for a Silver Medal at the All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria. During the past seven years, Cook has visited six African countries hosting basketball fundamental clinics for coaches and players, and accompanied a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Mission Trip to Haiti during the summer of 2013. He has also served as a coach for several traveling teams, including teams that traveled to Brazil and Russia, and coached a traveling team that defeated the 2001 University of Connecticut squad. In addition to his 2011 WBCA Region III Coach of the Year award, Cook has received several other honors. On April 5, 2010 he was named the winner of the WBCA prestigious Carol Eckman Award, was inducted into the Urbana University Hall of Fame in October of 2010 and in May of 2011 was the commencement speaker for Urbana University. He is now a voting member of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. Cook, born February 7, 1961, is the son of the late Herbert Cook and Ruthie Meek of Fremont, Ohio. He graduated with a degree in Social Science from Urbana University and received his Master of Administration degree from Gallaudet University in 2010. Cook is married to Francine and they have two daughters, Keshana, a senior at Wichita State, and Kayla, a sophomore at Highland Community College (KS).

Not only does she work tirelessly on the recruiting trail, her experience as a division 1 player has proved beneficial in assisting with the development of our players.” Hamilton was very instrumental in recruiting and developing Winthrop standout, Diana Choibekova. Choibekova led the conference in made three pointers and three pointers in a season. She also assisted with the development of three-time Big South Player of the Year Dequesha McClanahan and Freshman of the Year Schaquilla Nunn. In addition to her coaching duties, she works closely with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program in planning and coordinating the team’s community service projects. Hamilton came to Winthrop prior to the 2011-12 season from Daytona State College where she helped direct the 2010-11 Lady Falcons to the Mid-Florida Conference Co-Championship. Hamilton, a standout player for Temple University, graduated cum laude from Temple in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. During her time at Temple, she enjoyed an impressive career
on the court as she started 48 games and helped lead the team to two Philadelphia Big-5 Titles, two Atlantic-10 Championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Individually, Hamilton earned Atlantic-10 All-Tournament Team honors in 2004 while helping the Owls to the conference championship and its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons. She was also named to the Big-5 All-Academic Team, and earned the Team StudentAthlete Academic Award in 2003 and 2004. Hamilton earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Villanova in 2011. At Daytona State she served as the recruiting coordinator as well as the academic coordinator. The team ranked as high as third in the state of Florida in 2010-11 and also posted the state’s best mark for points allowed at 56.7 per game. Hamilton spent two years coaching girls’ basketball at Coatesville High School before taking the assistant position at Daytona State. In her first season, the team posted a 24-7 record and featured All-American guard Amber White, who just wrappedup her collegiate career with the North Carolina State women’s basketball program. She also coached several women’s basketball recreational league teams in the Philadelphia area and ran two youth leagues, one in Coatesville, PA and the other in Phoenixville, PA. Prior to joining the staff at Daytona State, Hamilton used to conduct basketball camps and clinics with her brother Richard “Rip” Hamilton throughout the year at various locations across the country. Rip Hamilton is a three-time All-Star and World Champion (2004) with the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. He also led Connecticut men’s basketball team to a 1999 National Championship and was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the NCAA Final Four.
