Now there’s a concept we African Americans get, and quite readily.
And, from the looks of things lately, we’re still taking that long walk. From the Supreme Court moving to strike down key aspects of the Voting Rights Act of 1963, to a renowned TV host losing her aura behind admitting to the utterances of a certain racial epithet, to a previously unknown Floridian walking away from killing an unarmed AfricanAmerican teen, the past few months have been quite interesting in terms of Civil Rights in the In Long Walk United States. to Freedom Against this backdrop, noted actor Idris Elba Will The First is slated to portray Nelson Mandela, one of the Black Female world’s most beloved Black leaders, in an upcoming NASCAR Driver Be biographical film. Ironically, this news comes as Dystany Spurlock? many mainstream news agencies had a “death We Drive: watch” set up outside Mandela’s hospital. At any rate, the film version of Mr. Mandela’s autobiography is one of the most highly anticipated motion pictures of the upcoming holiday movie season. Already, there is speculation Idris Elba will be rewarded for his work on the project with an Academy Award nomination. Having followed Elba’s career for quite some time now, we believe he’s due. Speaking of things coming due; isn’t it about time we had a Black female NASCAR driver to celebrate? By all appearances, young Dystany Spurlock is on track to shatter that barrier. Already quite successful in motorcycle racing, and showing tremendous promise in Arena automobile racing, Ms. Spurlock seems poised to make the leap to the big time. You’ll get to know her a bit in this issue. Also, we finally get our hands on the fastest production car in the world, the Bugatti Veyron. Decisive senior editor Brian Armstead tells us all about his adventure behind the wheel of that beast. And, while we’re on the subject of the world’s fastest cars, we also took a spin in the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, the fastest Cadillac station wagon ever built. It’s summer time, so some R&R is definitely in order too. A trip to sunny Southern California in a Mercedes-Benz SL550 seemed like a nice repast for the season. You’ll see how that played in this issue as well. While we’re on the subject of our thoughts, you’ll find our picks for the best affordable cars this time too. his most challenging role to date as “Nelson Mandela” in the upcoming film Long
Walk To Freedom.
AND IN SHAPE THIS SUMMER
Born Idrissa Akuna Elba, the British actor first came to the attention of most AfricanAmerican filmgoers as ‘Monty” in the 2006 Tyler Perry film Daddy’s Little Girls, playing opposite Gabrielle Union. In the 2009 film Obsessed, Elba again took on a romantic leading man role, but this time with a twist. In Obsessed, a resolute “Lisa Sheridan” played by former model Ali Larter, was determined to woo Elba’s character “Derek Charles” away from his wife “Sharon”, played by Beyonce Knowles. A box office success, Obsessed ultimately made $94 million, and Elba started looking like a bankable star. His most recent role, as “General Stacker Pentecost” in the Science-Fiction outing Pacific Rim, was hailed as a success—despite the typically low quality expectations held for summer blockbuster Sci-Fi fare. Defying the critics, Elba infused the role with gravity—his was an authentic presence. If his work in Long Walk To Freedom is even close to what he did in Pacific Rim, and there is every reason to expect him to surpass it, Elba may well find himself on the short list for a Best Actor nomination come Oscar time. The timing of the film certainly helps. As this is written, the world is very concerned with the health of the beloved Mandela, who is currently hospitalized with a lung infection as he celebrates his 95th birthday. Mandela’s story is one of the most compelling triumph of faith over adversity tales

in history. Having spent some 30 years of his life imprisoned for his political activist efforts to end apartheid in South Africa, Mandela is a figure respected by people all over the world. There have been other portrayals of Mandela in cinema; most recently Morgan Freeman’s turn as the iconic leader in the sports film Invictus. However, this is the first motion picture based on his book, and quite possibly the most comprehensive cinematic telling of his life’s story. Long Walk To Freedom opens November 29th. you don’t hit a sugar low in the afternoon. Good options to keep handy or in a desk drawer include a handful of almonds, a piece of beef jerky or dried pumpkin seeds.
Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can provide longterm results, according to two experts from Curves, Nadia Rodman, director of nutrition, and Katie Mitchell, director of exercise. Here are six tips to get you started on the path to better health:
Tip #4 Add Strength Training: Be sure to incorporate resistance training into your exercise program. Resistance training helps build lean muscle, which builds your strength, creating a firm and toned appearance – plus it boosts your metabolism. Weight bearing exercise also helps build up bone density.
Tip #1 Make Over Your Breakfast: A higher protein breakfast turns up your satiety signal and helps you fight cravings throughout the day. Consider a parfait made with fresh fruit and low-fat Greek yogurt that can add as much as 30 grams of protein to your day. Try this easy recipe: Combine 1 cup plain, low-fat Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup almonds, 1 cup strawberries and 1/2 cup blueberries or another favorite fruit.
Tip #5 Add Cardiovascular Exercise: While resistance training helps us build lean muscle, cardio activity will strengthen your heart and burn body fat. Look for a workout that includes both strength training and cardio exercise, such as Curves. Also look for activities the whole family can enjoy, such as charitable walks or runs in your community.
Tip #2 Add Some Flavor to Your Water: Try flavoring your water naturally with fresh fruit and herbs, such as berries, orange slices, mint and lemon or lime slices. Simply fill a large pitcher with water or carbonated water, fruit, and/or herbs of your choice. Store in the refrigerator for about 3 hours. Pour water over ice and enjoy.
Tip #6 Have a Coach: It helps to have a coach or workout buddy for accountability and motivation. It’s always more fun to work out with a partner and the added support will help keep you on track. Look for a gym or club that offers a coach that is hands-on and will meet with you on a regular basis.
Tip #3 Keep Healthy Snacks Handy: Be prepared when a snack craving hits. Snacks packed with protein help keep your energy level even so

SAVVY TIPS FOR A GET-TOGETHER TO REMEMBER WRITTEN BY KATIE BROWN
There is nothing better than gathering family and friends for a fun, outdoor get-together. With a few decorating tricks and entertaining ideas, anyone can become the “host(ess) with the most(est).”

Whether your outdoor space is a sweeping, lakeside veranda or a tiny balcony with parking lot views, embrace it— be it a casual family dinner or a summer party with the neighbors. First, a little preparation goes a long way. Before heading outside, spot treat your backyard with a product designed to protect it from a variety of insects like mosquitoes, ants and fleas, such as the OFF! Bug Control Backyard Pretreat. Simply attach it to a garden hose and apply to your trees, shrubs, ornamentals and structures. For a welcoming atmosphere, Brown always suggests incorporating flowers. Loosely arrange cut flowers in vases or salvaged bottles to enhance the ambiance of any summer get-together. Potted plants are inviting and can serve many purposes, such as welcome signs, house numbers and bird feeders, so get inspired and have fun getting creative. When it comes to prepping your outdoor living space for summer gatherings, remember that the tricks you use inside your home to make a space more cozy and inviting also work well outside. Cluster seating around a coffee table then add side tables for plates of food and glasses. Anchor the grouping with a beautiful outdoor rug. Then amp up the fun factor with vibrant hues that mimic the colors in the surrounding landscapes. Why not poppy red pillows or a sunflower yellow tablecloth? Keep the decor light, bright and festive. Lighting is another key consideration. Make sure there is plenty of lighting in the areas where your guests will gather as well as along walking paths or driveways. Lighting can also create a special festive feeling at any party. There is something truly magical about thousands of tiny white lights surrounding an outdoor space. For ambiance, string several strands of lights through trees and bushes or along wooden decks. Clusters of candles should also be placed on small tables near where the guests will be lounging. If you’re hosting a planned event, preparation for any type of weather is important. Try to anticipate things your guests may need to be comfortable during the party. Fill up wicker baskets, or “pamper pots,” and set them near various seating areas. It’s a thoughtful touch guests will really appreciate. ITEMS TO CONSIDER • Sunscreen: Even if the day is cloudy, both kids and adults will appreciate having an extra bottle of sunscreen on hand. • Mosquito repellent: The OFF! Clip-On gives your guests personal protection against mosquitos so they can stay comfortable throughout the event.
• Light blankets: The success of a party is often judged by how late people linger. Roll up a few light blankets and tuck them in the basket in case evening brings a chilly drop in temperature. • Umbrellas: Whether guests use them for an unexpected rainshower or to shield themselves from the sun, umbrellas are a thoughtful touch. • Flashlights: A little extra illumination may come in handy during late night festivities. The kids might find flashlights make for a great game of tag. If you’re hosting a planned event such as a birthday party or holiday BBQ, consider offering a fun take-home treat. As the party winds down, fill a small beach bag with any extra supplies, such as flashlights, sunscreen, insect repellent, bubbles and sidewalk chalk, for each family. Your guests will go home with great memories, lots of pictures of your spectacular soiree and a few goodies for their next outdoor adventure. KEEPING GUESTS ENTERTAINED When planning outdoor gatherings, don’t let your guests lounge for too long. Get them up and interacting with a few fun games and activities provided by Katie Brown. Plan an assortment of activities designed to engage all ages with these tips: • A bubble refill station: Engaging activities are fun for kids — they can blow big bubbles in the yard while the parents watch and mingle. • A cookie decorating station: Create a theme for the party and have guests colorfully decorate cookies to reflect the party theme. • Classic picnic games: What outdoor gathering is complete without a round of croquet, horseshoes or bocce ball? Consider a classic race game, such as the three-legged race, potato sack race or wheelbarrow race. • Photobooth fun: Hang a large vintage picture frame from the branch of a sturdy tree. Supply a bucket of props and disposable cameras so guests can create a memento that will last a lifetime. • Water balloon toss: Have guests take turns throwing water balloons in bowls set up at varying distances. The winner is the person who lands the most unbroken balloons in the bowls. If you plan to give guests more than just the thrill of victory as a prize, aim for a fun summertime theme. Give out beach towels, pool toys, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, kites, coolers or beach bags. These also make great party favors. d D

The delightful fragrance of Kai Jasmine floats delicately on the air, working hand in hand with glistening marble, tasteful décor, and sumptuous furnishings to inform you of the singular nature of the situation you’ve introduced yourself into. The vibe says definitively; “You can let go now, you’ve arrived. From this moment forward, all of your needs will be attended to.” In a similar fashion, the latest iteration of the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL550 pampers you—even while it excites your senses. This, the sixth generation of one of the most glamorous convertibles the automotive universe has ever known is more luxurious, more tech laden, and a better performer than it has ever been at any time in its 61-year history. Settling in front of the steering wheel of the Mercedes SL, you know you’re in for an extraordinary motoring experience—even before you start the engine. Now crafted primarily of aluminum, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is 20 percent more rigid than the 2012 model it supplants, contains even more technological features, and yet weighs 200 pounds less. This makes it faster and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor— even as it coddles you with an exceptional array of luxury features. Its innovative solutions include the Magic Sky Roof, which bathes the interior of the SL in sunlight—even when the retractable hardtop is deployed. And yet, the roof’s photo-chromic property enables it to darken at the touch of a button to shield the interior from the sun’s rays—should you prefer. In a sun-caressed location like Carlsbad—gloriously situated as it is in California’s sunniest coastal region—this can be a useful feature. Boasting some 266 days of sunshine a year (on average), the San Diego region is a natural when it comes to vacationing. Yes, most people immediately think “Zoo” when San Diego is mentioned. Or, if they’re somewhat knowledgeable—La Jolla—the tony suburb immediately adjacent to San Diego comes to mind. However, the erudite traveler knows the Riviera north of La Jolla is where relaxation truly begins.
Lush, white sand beaches frame sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean and lace delightful villages with quaint names like Cardiff-by-the Sea, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and the crown jewel of this string of delights, Carlsbad. While each of these towns offers a slightly different character, Carlsbad provides a taste of them all—plus more. In addition to seaside atmosphere, Carlsbad affords attractions such as world-class luxury shopping at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets and endless entertainment for children at Legoland. All of this is in addition to the resort lifestyle so abundantly in evidence at the Park Hyatt Aviara. If you’re planning a San Diego getaway, Carlsbad should be your primary consideration. There’s just one catch, it’s very easy to settle in at the Park Hyatt Aviara and never leave. Golf? A product of Arnold Palmer’s imagination, Aviara’s challenging course is sculpted from rolling hillsides with beach style bunkers and breathtaking water features. Tennis? Aviara’s Beach Butler will take you there, set up your beach chairs and umbrella, stock you with towels, and at the appointed hour, serve your picnic meal. Spa treatments? Aviara houses a 15,000 square foot cathedral of rejuvenation. Fine dining? The culinary experience at Aviara’s AAA Four Diamond Vivace restaurant, along with its regional Italian cuisine, is positively sublime. summerroadtrip Millions of cars are expected to take part in a summer vacation this year. If yours is one of those hitting the road to get you to your destination, here are a few reminders to help ensure it’s road-trip-ready.
TIPS
1. CHECK UNDER THE HOOD Even if you properly care for your vehicle year round by keeping up with regularly scheduled maintenance, it is wise to check your vehicle’s oil, coolant and wiper fluid levels before heading out on the road. Hot summer temperatures can cause your engine to overheat, so keep an eye on all of the warning lights on your dashboard—from the engine light to the gas gauge.
few minutes of a rain shower can be a dangerous time for drivers. Oil and grease trapped on roadways rises to the surface and can create slippery driving conditions that can impact the traction and grip of your car. In fact, stopping on a wet road can take up to four times the normal distance as a dry road. It’s best to slow down and increase the space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
2. INSPECT YOUR VEHICLE To help avoid any unfortunate surprises, do a thorough check of your vehicle, paying special attention to the only part that actually touches the road - your tires. Be sure to properly check all four tires with a tire pressure gauge. The optimum tire pressure required for your car can be found on a sticker in the door jamb, on the inside of the glove compartment door, or in the owner's manual. “The proper inflation is essential for the performance and longevity of a tire,” says Ron Margadonna of Michelin. “In fact, keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level can boost fuel efficiency by one mile per gallon.” For tire maintenance tips, visit www.MichelinMan.com.
4. PREP FRIENDS, FAMILY AND YOUR HOME Remember to tell neighbors, friends and family that you’ll be out of town. Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on the house and have someone pick up your mail and newspaper. It’s also a good idea to set up timers on lamps and lights in various rooms throughout your home so it looks occupied.
3. CHECK THE WEATHER Unexpected storms are common during the summer months and the first

5. REVIEW THE ROUTE No matter how well you plan your journey, you can never predict what obstacles you might encounter along the way. Road construction, traffic detours or bad weather can be troublesome if you don’t have a backup plan. It’s best to review your route and understand the alternate roads that can help you arrive at your destination safely, stress free, and ready to enjoy your vacation.d D
what could happen. The fact is car accidents are the numberone cause of death among teens in the U.S With that in mind, it's important to communicate the gravity of this newfound responsibility. Before you turn your teen loose on the road, here are a few talking points you might want to fashion a conversation around.
• Seatbelt: Teens buckle up far less frequently than adults, so be sure to reiterate that fastening your seatbelt should be the very first thing you do before keys are even in the ignition. • Texting: Cell phones, the radio and other passengers are all major distractions. Every second a teen takes their eyes off the road could be an opportunity for a terrible accident. Cite examples of recent car accidents from texting while driving to further establish this danger. • Drinking and driving: It's important to stress no one under the age of 21 should be drinking. But, let them know to make the right decision and have a designated driver or call for a ride home. • Defensive driving: Teens need to be hyper-sensitive to all surroundings, since their brain is not fully developed. They must not only be aware of how they're driving but how others drive too so collisions are avoided. • Penalties: Talk about the fines associated with tickets, and let them know they will be responsible for any monetary repercussions and attending traffic court.
• Roadside emergencies and maintenance: Go over what to do and whom to call in an emergency. Make certain they have roadside assistance and insurance information readily available. Also, teach them about basic maintenance to ensure they schedule regular oil changes, tire rotations and inspections and always check that they've changed the wiper blades. Having that first conversation is only the start, so go over these points with them regularly to make sure they make good decisions. Spurlock currently rides a 2010 BMWS1000RR, one of the fastest production motorcycles in the world. While Spurlock is very enthusiastic about the thrills of racing, she is also aware of the dangers—and accepts them readily. Recounting her first racing crash, Spurlock says; “The day I flipped, I’d had a feeling something was going to happen all day. I lined up for the run, the green light came on and I left the line. Immediately I was like, Oh My God, my bike is flipping…so I let it go and just let myself roll. When I stopped and sat up, I wasn’t afraid—I was mad! I was like, awww man, my bike just got jacked up!” When asked about her emotional response to the incident, Spurlock says it was more startling than frightening. “I was back up and on my bike again within 20 minutes and kept on racing.” Were this all there is to the remarkable young woman from Richmond, Virginia, it would be outstanding in and of itself. But there’s more. Arena Racing. Running in her second season this year, Spurlock is driving a half-scale stock car with the purpose of gaining experience to ultimately drive full-size cars in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. This would find Spurlock competing against the likes of current points leader Sam Hornish, Jr. of Penske Racing. Yeah, she’s serious like that. What’s more, this is far from being a pipe dream. Spurlock finished her first season of Arena racing in the top six and was named Rookie of The Year. through as this is written. Potentially, by this time next year, young Ms. Spurlock could well be the first full-time African-American female NASCAR pilot—ever. The self-professed “tomboy” with an overriding intelligence and model good looks is actually quite philosophic about it all. “I’ve always believed I could do anything I really wanted to do. In fact, many times I’d do things just because people told me I wasn’t supposed to because I’m female. This was one of the reasons I went out for, and made the football teams both in middle school and in high school,” Spurlock says. Blessed with a mother whose can-do attitude always encouraged Spurlock to try things; she was told as a child to always raise her hand in school and not to fear being wrong. Spend five seconds with Dystany Spurlock and you’ll see her mother’s lessons took—quite firmly. And yet, this fireball of unalloyed white-hot record-setting energy, when she’s not screaming along a racetrack at triple digit speeds, is into—horticulture. She likes cultivating and caring for plants. In fact, that’s her “day job” right now. She also has a garden at her grandparent’s house. Spurlock says; “I grow tomatoes, squash, and all types of different vegetables. I just love caring for plants and flowers and gardening in general, it’s fun.” Remarkable. And, so incredibly endearing. That’s Dystany Spurlock.d D
If ever an individual were aptly named, Dystany (pronounced Destiny) Spurlock is certainly the one. This young woman has a firm grasp on hers and is racing toward it at a record-setting pace. Engaging the energetic Spurlock in conversation, her enthusiasm has a way of erasing both doubt and concern. She has her eyes focused well into her future, and is diligently working today to see it to fruition. Spurlock first came to national attention when she was invited to try a BMW S1000RR drag bike at a Manufacturer’s Cup racing event in Georgia. By her fourth pass, her times were better than many of the established professional riders on hand. She went on to set a track record at South Georgia Motorsports Park that day, running the quarter mile in 8.61 seconds at 163 miles per hour. Says Spurlock; “I have no idea where that run came from, it literally came out of nowhere. When I saw those time slips, I couldn’t believe it! That was probably the most ecstatic moment of my career so far.”

Essentially self-taught, Spurlock is what people call a “natural”. She never attended racing school and she's never had formal motorcycling lessons. Spurlock grew up in a family where bikes were enjoyed for fun and sport. They were simply a part of her life, so she just naturally gravitated toward them. Transitioning from riding on the back of her mother’s motorcycle to driving her first bike of her own at the age of 17, Spurlock started racing immediately. After that record-setting run, representatives from BMW took note of her performance and ultimately invited Spurlock to become an ambassador for

Have you ever wondered where the Fiat 500 comes from? Apparently the 500L, or as described by Fiat engineers “the mother of the Cinquecento.” Actually, the longer, (27.7 inches) and wider (six inches) four-door 2014 500L looks more related to the Mini Clubman, perhaps because it serves the same purpose, to offer greater versatility to compact car buyers. Extra inches mean extra room on the inside of the 500L, starting with the ability to comfortably seat five adults or in tech terms, best-in-class interior, head and shoulder, and rear cargo volume (with the seats up). A panoramic view, constructed of glass from the A-to D-pillars offers 360-degree views and further enhances the spacious interior. An oversized sunroof is available but the greenhouse effect it creates will only make it preferable in cooler climates. The fuel-efficient MultiAir Turbo engine powers the 500L, providing class-leading output of 160 horsepower and 184 lbs.–ft. of torque. On the recent launch in Baltimore, the 500L exhibited quite a bit of peppiness as well as interior quietness. Happily, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission, but a sixspeed Euro Twin Clutch transmission is available. Both achieve an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 33 mpg on the highway. The manual performs one tick better with 25 mpg in the city. The eco-Drive application can also assist with fuel economy. Welcome standard convenience features include the Driver Selectable Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with outside temperature, average fuel economy, distance-to-empty, etc. Remote keyless entry, a CD player, Bluetooth and Uconnect 5.0 with a five-inch touchscreen are also standard. Pricing for the 2014 500L starts at $19,100.
One of the last mid-size SUVs to stick with a body-on-frame construction, the all-new 2014 Toyota 4Runner improves on looks and capability with optional third-row seats (SR5 and Limited models) for seven-person seating capacity. At the recent launch in Farmington, Pennsylvania, the 4Runner showcased its off-road finesse as well as its on-road quietness and smooth ride. In its fifth generation, the 4Runner’s redesigned front fascia conveys a more rugged and aggressive appearance, with a muscular front grille and smoked headlamps. Available in three grades, the value-driven SR5 and Trail grades feature a color-keyed grille insert and front bumper while the top-ofthe-line Limited’s front design abounds with chrome accents including a plated grille insert, front bumper, and fog-lamp bezels. A 4.0-liter V6 powers all trim levels and generates 270 horsepower and 278 lbs.–ft. of torque. Matched to a five-speed automatic transmission, the V6 earns an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for 4x2 models. The 4x4 models lose one mpg on the highway. The standard Eco-Driving feedback can help improve fuel-efficient driving. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and all vehicles feature an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness rear back-up camera as standard equipment. All 4x4 models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and the A-TRAC traction control system while each trim offers standard technology for off-road enthusiasts. Two-speed, part-time four-wheeldrive system with neutral position is standard on the SR5 and Trail while full-time four-wheel drive and a locking center differential come with the Limited. Pricing will be released nearer the on sale date in September.
Moving into the third generation of the Tundra, Toyota has refined an already high functioning product to improve its appeal across a number of areas. For 2014, Tundra gets all-new styling, a completely renovated interior treatment, and a host of technological solutions calculated to make the model both more comfortable and more luxurious. The most evident change is the new, more sculpted look. Tundra now sports a huge grille treatment, slightly flared fenders and a broader shoulder line. The sides of the Toyota pickup offer more detail, implying a renewed sense of strength and solidity. At the rear, the tailgate is wider and has a more chiseled appearance. For 2014, Tundra is offered in five states of trim; SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and the top of the line ultra-luxurious Tundra 1794 Edition. Regardless of the trim level chosen, the 2014 Tundra’s interior treatment benefits from a look of superior craftsmanship. Perhaps the biggest news is the launch of the Tundra 1794 Edition. Featuring the same grade of leather upholstery offered in the Lexus LS, the 1794 Tundra is Toyota’s assault on the ultra high-end pickup market. Three engines are offered for the 2014 model year; a 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission; a 310-horsepower, 4.6-liter V8; and a 381-horsepower, 5.7-liter V8. Both the 4.6-liter V8 and the 5.7-liter V8 are mated to Toyota’s six-speed automatic transmission. One of the quietest pickup trucks we’ve ever experienced, the 2014 Toyota Tundra raises the noise vibration and harshness expectations bar considerably. The new Tundra is a very comfortable and very capable pickup truck. Further, it is offered in just enough configurations to make ordering one a relatively simple process—while still meeting the needs of pretty much every full-size pickup intender. Pricing starts at $25,920.
Spend even the shortest amount of time driving in San Francisco and you’ll very quickly come to realize the process is all about going around stuff. The city’s streets are more like an ever-changing obstacle course than a network of thoroughfares. Which is a perfect environment for something small and agile like the 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. The Smart car’s 55-kilowatt electric motor produces 35 watts of continuous power. If you hit the go-pedal hard, the full 55 kilowatts will be generated for about two minutes. This translates to 74 peak horsepower and 47 steady-state horsepower. Further, the motor generates 96 ft-lbs of torque the moment you press the go pedal. From a 240v outlet recharging the battery takes about six hours. In about 3.25 hours, it can be recharged from 20 percent to 80 percent of capacity. The EPA says to expect 76 miles on a full charge. About pricing… MSRP is $25,000 for the Coupe and $28,000 for the Cabriolet. However… Smart’s Battery Assurance Plus (BAP) guarantees the battery will hold at least an 80 percent charge for 10 years, or it will be replaced free of charge. The plan costs $80 per month, but choosing BAP reduces the car’s MSRP by $5000. Additionally, the Federal government is offering up to a $7,500 tax credit. Further, starting August 1, Smart is providing a $2000 rebate. Thus, the ultimate price of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive could be as low as $10,500 for the Coupe and $13,500 for the Cabriolet—and even less if your state and or local governments also offer tax incentives on the purchase of an electric car. Yes, Smart also offers a lease for the ForTwo Electric Drive. With BAP and the rebate, the monthly lease payment is $139.

CadillacCTS-VWagon WRITTEN BY LYNDON CONRAD BELL
THIS CADDY REALLY HAULS!
Something about driving a Cadillac CTS-V Wagon makes you swagger when you step out of it. After parking the super Caddy, you'll find yourself walking into places with an authoritative air, as if you own the world. It has been said power corrupts, and while we wouldn't characterize the feeling as being corrupted per se, the phrase "infused with attitude" does have quite a bit of resonance in this circumstance. And, IT’S A STATION WAGON!!! Like so many high performance cars, the Cadillac can get from Aretha to Beyonce with insane quickness. However, unlike numerous other high performance cars, the CTS-V Wagon accomplishes this with a sophistication completely belying its amazing potential. While the angular, sharply drawn lines of the Cadillac Wagon would lead you to imagine a harsh ride
20
DECISIVE MAGAZINE | WWW.DECISIVEMAGAZINE.COM
and an all enveloping exhaust note, the CTS-V Wagon instead displays polish, sophistication, and refinement. And, as if all of this isn’t good enough, when you factor in the utility, you have a high performance car that literally hauls! Among the model’s most distinctive mechanical features are GM’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension system, a set of exceptionally robust Brembo
brakes, and four super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 high performance tires mounted on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. The heart of the CTS-V Wagon though is the resident supercharged 6.2L V8. Capable of providing immensely intense levels of thrust, the extremely powerful engine delivers its 556 horsepower and 551 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential. And, IT’S A STATION WAGON!! The highest performing American station wagon ever built for the street is offered with a choice of two six-speed transmissions. For those who love to row to go, there is a six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch. For others who prefer to mostly set it and forget it, a six-speed automatic with steering wheelmounted shift controls is the other offering. While the automatic’s steering wheel-mounted controls require no shift lever movement to allow immediate
tap up/tap down gear selection, moving the shift lever into the manual gate will activate a performance-oriented mode to facilitate a more aggressive shift program for sustained high-performance driving. The 2013 CTS-V Wagon gets a high-performance rear axle with a cast iron housing specified to enable faster warm-up and cooling. The red hot Caddy’s rear end also features asymmetrical half-shafts to smoothly manage the incredible torque output of supercharged engine. As you might imagine, the CTS-V’s governing fuel economy philosophy is more about “smiles per gallon” than miles per gallon. The EPA says to anticipate 12 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway with the automatic transmission, while the manual should return 14 in the city and 19 on the highway (when driven conservatively). Nail the throttle and the supercharged V8 makes its presence readily audible. However, rather than blasting a skin shredding shriek, the engine emits a warmly muted, yet undeniably powerful baritone—accompanied by skin shredding acceleration. The Corvette-sourced engine streaks the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon screaming to sixty from rest in four seconds. Wind it to redline in second gear and you'll be doing 80 miles per hour— as well as wearing a HUGE grin on your face. Keep your foot to the floor, the Cadillac will eventually top out at 198 miles per hour. And, IT’S A STATION WAGON!!! For 2013, Cadillac’s engineers reworked the braking system to incorporate two-piece front brake rotors as standard equipment. Designed to offer greater resistance to warping and potentially longer rotor life, this new strategy also reduced the weight of the suspension system. Speaking of which, pavement irregularities are absorbed with a degree of competence wholly in keeping with Cadillac’s rep for old school smooth. Yet, when the CTS-V Wagon is asked to turn in sharply, the magnetic system keeps the body flat while the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires bite into the pavement relentlessly. Having exhibited outstanding balance, grip and agility, the CTS-V then heads swiftly off in the new direction you've chosen with no extraneous steering inputs or hesitation. Ride = old school. Handling = new rules. For many years, anyone desiring a truly capable wagon of this caliber was pretty much locked into one of the Germans. With the 2013 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, North Americans desiring supercar performance with the practicality of a station wagon can confidently shop domestic and feel good about the purchase. It’s one of the finest performance cars available today. Drive a Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, you will indeed feel infused with attitude, and justifiably so. And oh, did we mention—IT’S A STATION WAGON!?!?d D

BugattiVeyron GRAND SPORT:
I’ve driven some really great cars in my lifetime. Frankly, that’s just part of the life of an automotive journalist—it’s what we do. But my head still spins and my heart still pounds whenever I recall my drive in what I consider to be the ultimate automobile; the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. A French car company with an Italian name, currently owned by a German conglomerate (Volkswagen), Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti founded Automobiles Ettore Bugatti in 1909. Among the world’s most desirable cars of his time, Bugatti’s automobiles were known both for their high level of engineering and for their stunningly beautiful designs. They were also very fast. As is the current representative of his marque. Purpose built for extreme performance, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport is

equipped with an 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder engine capable of producing an astonishing 1001 horsepower. With a few subtle tweaks, the engineering team coaxes out an even more extreme 1183 horsepower for the Super Sport and Vitesse iterations of the Veyron. Huge polished aluminum intakes just aft of the passenger compartment feed air into the engine. Four turbochargers provide, and four waste gates bleed off boost. A total of ten radiators and heat exchangers are staged throughout the engine compartment. The engine’s 16 cylinders are arrayed in a “W” configuration for more compact packaging. Essentially, Bugatti’s engineers merged two V8 engines
onto a common crankshaft. The two merged Vs create a W. The all-wheel drive Veyron’s seven-speed dual clutch transmission is also unique, tasked with harnessing twice the torque of a regular sports car transmission. Shifts are fired off with lightning speed. When it was time to hit the road, Bugatti’s professional racing driver drove first, to show me what to do and what NOT to do. After undergoing “Veyron 101,” I was ready, or at least I thought I was ready to experience the unleashing of 1001 horsepower. When he nailed the throttle, all four of the Veyron’s turbochargers kicked in and the Bugatti launched like an express train to the moon. Three, two, one—LIFTOFF!!!! The symphonic harmony of the quad turbos, quad wastegates, and intake
sound of the big engine gulping air filled the passenger compartment with intoxicatingly sweet music. The sheer thrust was alarming—after all, I wasn’t expecting to leave my stomach back at the starting line. It’s one thing to say zero to sixty in 2.6 seconds; feeling it is something else altogether. The plausibility of the Veyron Grand Sport’s quoted maximum velocity—a mind bending 253 miles per hour— instantly racked sharply into focus. When it was my turn behind the wheel I wisely limited my bursts to super quick runs up to 140 mph and then hard on the brakes to keep the local constables from throwing me under the jail for reckless driving. The horsepower gauge showed I had more than 700 untapped horsepower available to me during steady state cruising. In its “normal” mode, top speed is 220 mph. At 140 mph, the car hunkers down to a ground clearance of about 3.5 inches. At the same time, the rear wing and spoiler deploy, providing some 770 pound-feet of downforce to hold the Bugatti more firmly to the road. To reach the full 253, you insert the “top speed” key to the left of the driver's seat. The Bugatti then runs a diagnostic checklist to determine if the Veyron is ready to attempt a run at 253 mph. The rear spoiler retracts, the front air diffusers shut, and ground clearance drops to 2.6 inches. If you can travel this fast, you’d better be able to stop in a hurry too. No worries, as the Grand Sport’s braking system encompasses eight-piston front calipers and six pistons at the rear, clamping massive 15-inch plus rotors. At speeds in excess of 120 mph, the rear spoiler also deploys upward at a 55-degree angle to serve as an air brake. By the way, the front grilles and windshield are reinforced to resist bird strikes. Comfortable at any speed, ride quality is surprisingly good. Cabin fit and finish is excellent, and luxury accoutrements abound as well. The glass roof panel is removable, but cannot be stored onboard. If caught in inclement weather, a portable roof (not rated for top speed) is in the front trunk. OK, now back to reality… Being what it is, Veyron maintenance costs are high—very, very high. Replacing the Bugatti’s 10,000 mile Michelin PAX tires (the only rubber certified for the car’s top speed) will set you back $30,000. Because the wheel beads can be compromised after too many tire changes, you’ll buy a new set of wheels—at nearly $70,000—with your third set of tires. After all, losing tire pressure at 253 mph could well lead to the equivalent of a thermonuclear incident. Annual dealership maintenance costs are estimated at more than $21,000 per year. But hey, if you’ve got a disposable two million to get one in the first place, that’s pocket change—right?d D

First Time Cars
DECISIVE AUTO’S GUIDE TO
affordablecars COMPILED BY VALERIE MENARD
Affordable is a term with different meanings for different people. For some people, “free” is about as affordable as it gets, while others might consider the Bugatti Veyron “affordable”. It all depends on your circumstances.
To that end, we’ve grouped our selections here by life situation— recognizing the fact, affordable is typically relative to where you are in life. The first car for teenagers or college students, usually purchased by their parents, needs to be safe before anything else, but it also should be fuel efficient, and reliable. In the past, that meant basic (read boring) transportation. Today, the selection among compact cars is so varied parents can afford to consider cars with a little more complexity. Young professionals are generally looking to step-up from a first-time car to a vehicle with more luxury and sex appeal. Typically choosing from the small to midsize car segment—one of the most competitive in the
industry—brings an even greater selection. Meanwhile, young families tend to look to cars with more versatility, less fuss and strong fuel economy. This used to translate to minivan-land, but crossover vehicles have evolved to fill that niche of late. And, this segment continues to offer more, more, and more. Empty nesters, on the other hand, have the income and experience to buy pretty much whatever they want. Whether it’s a vehicle for transporting grandchildren, or making a statement, this car buyer stands at the top of the transportation food chain. Happily, all of these categories contain a number of our favorite affordable cars.
TOYOTA PRIUS c A gasoline-electric hybrid may not come to mind immediately as a first-time car option, but one of the most affordable hybrids on the market, why not? Priced below $20,000, this little hybrid was built for city driving, identified by the c, so it’s diminutive and with hybrids smaller is definitely better for fuel economy. Powered by Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, it can earn an EPA estimated fuel economy of 53 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 46 mpg on the highway. During a weeklong test drive, it averaged 41 mpg. The subcompact goes beyond basic transportation with standard features like a 3.5-inch full color TFT multi-information display, hands-free phone capability, a USB port with iPod connectivity, automatic climate control, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio, climate, and Bluetooth hands-free controls, and remote keyless entry with illuminated entry. Available in four trim levels, pricing for the 2013 Prius c starts at $19,875.
HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT Hyundai continues its conquest of the American market by offering more for less. As a five-door hatchback, the Elantra GT brings greater versatility, especially for teens with extra cargo needs, and as a Hyundai, it comes with extra features like dual-zone climate control, an AM/FM/Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with iPod/USB/auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth, a cooled glove box, heated front seats, and steering wheel audio and cruise controls. Powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and offering a choice of a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, it earns an EPA city/highway estimated fuel economy of 27/37 with the automatic. On a weeklong test drive, it averaged 29.1 mpg. The 2013 version adds a knee airbag for added safety, and electronic throttle control for better performance. Parents will also appreciate Hyundai’s signature warranty: 60,000 miles/ five-years bumper-to-bumper, 100,000 miles/ten years powertrain and five years of roadside assistance.

Young Families VOLVO C30 T5
SUBARU FORESTER
Like most consumers, young professionals will be aware of the bottom line, but the chance to step into an entry-level luxury car is also appealing. Priced in the mid-twenties, the Volvo C30 makes the uniquely Scandinavian interior experience accessible, plus, it offers performance and utility that make sense. Powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine that generates 227 horsepower, the C30 comes with a six-speed manual transmission but a fivespeed "Geartronic" automatic with "Auto-stick" function is available. It can achieve an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 21/29 mpg. The automatic actually improves by one mpg on the highway. Excessively fun to drive, it’s also fun to look at, with a muscular exterior that adds a sporty edge to this five-door hatchback. With the rear seats folded, there’s also 20.2 cubic feet of cargo room. Pricing for the 2013 Volvo C30 starts at $26,395.
All new for 2014, the Subaru Forester offers young families a reliable mode of transportation from one of the most recommended brands by Consumer Reports. The fourth generation of the all-wheel drive CUV shows a bolder exterior design with a roomier interior, along with improved performance and higher fuel economy. Adding to its reputation is the fact that all Subarus come with Symmetrical AWD that provides an added level of road safety. It does impinge on fuel economy but the 2.5-liter engine matched to the CVT can now claim a city/ highway fuel economy of 24/32 mpg. An improved six-speed manual and an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine are also available. Improvements to the AWD include X-mode and Hill Descent Control. Longer and wider than the previous version translates into more interior legroom and rear cargo space (with the seats folded flat) of 74.7 cu. ft. Pricing for the 2014 Subaru Forester starts at $22,820.
NISSAN JUKE Unique in the B-hatchback segment, the Juke stands out in a very crowded field. As a hatchback it offers versatility but as its exterior design suggests, it packs a lot of fun too. For starters, the standard 188-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine and an advanced torque vectoring all-wheel drive (AWD) system rampup its performance. But for those who would like to take the experience even farther, Nissan introduced a NISMO version inspired by the company's racing program this year. The Integrated Control (I-CON) system drive mode selector offers three different throttle/transmission/steering response settings; Normal for everyday driving, Sport for enhanced performance and Eco for maximum fuel efficiency. Adding versatility, the Juke’s available with a CVT automatic transmission or a six-speed manual and, in front-wheel (FWD) or AWD. The FWD CVT achieves the best fuel economy with a city/highway EPA estimated 27/32 mpg. Pricing for the Juke starts at $19,780.
MAZDA CX-5 All new from the ground up when first introduced last year, the CX-5 brings impressive fuel economy, packaging, and accessibility. Equipped with the brand’s signature fuel-saving 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G powertrain, the six-speed manual (a rare find in this segment) CX-5 Sport should achieve an EPA-rated city/highway fuel economy of 26/35 mpg. A six-speed automatic transmission and AWD are available. During a weeklong test drive of the new 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G model with AWD, the CX-5 averaged 24.3 mpg. The CX-5 seats five, with a standard 60/40-split fold-flat seat. A 40/20/40-split rear seat is available. With the rear seats folded, cargo room jumps to 64.8 cubic feet. Standard safety features include traction control, stability control, side curtain airbags, and anti-lock brakes. Rear parking sensors are available and the blind spot monitor is standard on the Touring, one step up from the base model. Pricing for the 2014 CX-5 starts at $21,990.

KIA SORENTO If it seems like CUVs are dominating this list, you’re right. This segment is just right for young families who need the versatility that CUVs offer, as well as affordability and fuel efficiency. Updated for 2014, the Kia Sorento bears a new sharp looking exterior as well as improved performance that increase its appeal. Made up of over 80-percent all-new or redesigned parts, the 2014 Sorento’s most significant upgrade may be the new, optional 3.3-liter GDI V6 engine that delivers 290 hp. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder is now the base engine and both are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Available with AWD, the FWD version with the four-cylinder engine should earn 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Using advanced sonar sensors, the 2014 Sorento is also the first Kia vehicle to offer a blind spot detection system. With seating for five or seven, pricing for the 2014 Sorento starts at $24,950.
CHEVROLET TRAVERSE For growing families with teams to haul as well as their equipment, the Chevrolet Traverse can do the job. Sporting new exterior refinements to the front fascia for 2013 that will soon be repeated throughout the line-up, the Traverse was also upgraded regarding its safety equipment. Multiple configurations include FWD or AWD and seven- or eight-passenger seating with a third row bench that can seat three adults. Only one engine powers all models, however, the 3.6-liter V-6 with fuelsaving direct injection matched to a six-speed automatic transmission can achieve an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 17/24 mpg with the FWD model. While front collision, lane departure, blind side warning, and rear cross traffic alert systems are available (standard on the LTZ model), a rearview camera system is standard on all models. With segment leading storage and a towing capacity of 5,200 pounds, the Traverse is quite accommodating. Pricing for the 2013 Traverse starts at $31,370. SUMMER | WWW.DECISIVEMAGAZINE.COM

Both the IIHS and Kelly Blue Book chose it as a top safety pick. LAND ROVER LR2 At this stage in life, car buyers may be less motivated by budget than by desire. For those who want to consider vehicles outside of the box, the 2013 Land Rover LR2 might suit such a splurge. Updated for 2013, the premium compact SUV doesn’t scrimp on luxury features or technology. Under the hood, there’s an all-new two-liter turbocharged engine with 240 horsepower and 250 ft-lbs of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and CommandShift that allows manual sequential gear shifts. Sitting inside the LR2, get ready for the spontaneous “Ah” that will invariably emerge. Plush leather seating—there are no cloth options—a standard dual sunroof, and a plethora of buttons and knobs accentuate the positive in the LR2. For those who wish to exercise the LR2’s off-road capabilities, there are four modes, from rocky to muddy. On a recent test drive in the snow in Canada, the LR2 demonstrated significant prowess. Pricing starts at $37,295.
BMW X3 Performance enthusiasts look to BMW for a sporty ride that even extends to its line-up of CUVs, or as BMW terms them, Sports Activity Vehicles. In 2013, the manufacturer moved the needle up a notch on the X3 by introducing the TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine. Powering the X3 xDrive28i, the new engine replaces the outgoing normally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine. Smaller but turbocharged, the new engine improves fuel economy. In addition, new packages bring more technology to the updated X3 xDrive28i and the X3 xDrive35i, including a new Driver Assistance Package option that includes Lane Departure Warning. The new standard equipment offerings for both models are Auto Start Stop, Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO, and the Power Tailgate. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices, including $895 destination and handling, are $39,395 for the X3 xDrive28i and $44,495 for the X3 xDrive35i. d D
