Not forgetting the excellent board, we created it on; from Julie at Millie & Pepper. et ready to jump into the holiday season feet first with this very merry issue. It was bloody ironic that as we were planning it the weather was sweltering and sizzling hot with 90 degrees fall days. I'm not complaining; we were still swimming in the bay in early October. We loved Summer sticking around after a late start, but It threw us all majorly off kilter. So, it was a little extra challenging to get in a ho ho ho jingly mood! Luckily Teaghan begged me to sit and watch The Nightmare Before Christmas Movie. (weird and wacky, but it did throw Christmas at me front and center). And then we got snow on Halloween? Really. I need to ease into the snow, just saying. So we broke out the winter gloves, hats and coats. Brrrr and we blasted the heat on the thermostat. If that wasn’t enough our landscaper marked our driveway with stalks for the snow plowing, (I realized as I backed into one of course!) and over the weekend we gained an hour as moved the clocks back. Winter is coming! With that Captain Obvious reminder, don’t get your tinsel in a tangle, we are here to help you delve into all the Hub Hub Hullabaloo of the Holidays head on. Glamorous Economics The Economic Club of Traverse City held their Annual Dinner at The Hagerty Center September 22nd. The keynote speaker was NBC National Correspondent Martha Teichner. Teichner was born in Traverse City, and still avidly supports the area even though she resides in New York. She has covered some of the most iconic breaking news stories including the attacks of 9/11, Princess Diana’s death and the life and death of Nelson Mandela. Winning Circle The Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center held their Circle of Friends luncheon October 4th. The Hagerty Center was overflowing with a caring community to support Zero Tolerance. At the luncheon attendees heard the stories of what happens after abuse is reported. Allison O’Keefe Old Mission Peninsula Education Foundation President

Why did you personally take a role in saving the Old Mission Peninsula School? I worked in education for 15 years and moved to Traverse City to be near my sister, with the hopes of starting a family. I watched my sister and her husband (OMPS alumni) raise their three children at Old Mission Peninsula School and I knew this is where I wanted to live my life. I met my husband, had two children and volunteered on the PTO. Two years ago, when talk of closing the school began, I happened to be the PTO President. I started out as an organizer for parents and community members to try and create solutions to keep the school open. We never had any plans (or desire!) to start a new school. Once the larger donations began to surface, I knew I needed to see it through. I’m not sure I knew how challenging or rewarding this endeavor would be!

The Old Mission Peninsula Education Fund (OMPEF) recently secured Charter Authorization from Grand Valley State University. What are the plans? OMPEF voted to keep the name of the school, “Old Mission Peninsula School.” Tradition is very important to this community. In early December, new school board members will officially accept their roles. They will be in charge of school decisions. OMPEF will remain as a separate non-profit 501(c)(3) with the mission of raising funds to enhance educational opportunities on Old Mission Peninsula, not solely for the school. The school plans to begin enrolling students in late January 2018. Our primary goal is to enroll at least 150 students. Ideally, we would like to exceed 200 students. OMPS will have small class sizes. The feedback we are receiving from community members makes us believe we will have a full house when we open in September 2018. We have a lofty goal of raising $2million before the school even opens. The school, like other public schools, will not receive any public funding for the next school year until mid-October 2018. That means that all startup costs must come from other sources. This includes early hiring of school leadership, the first two months of staff payroll and benefits, purchasing technology and curriculum, providing professional development, creating an environment of exceptional learning and, of course, paper, pencils and supplies. It takes a village, who on your team would you like to also give credit to? The team of people I work with are passionate, smart and incredibly dedicated. Every one of them has a fulltime job, works nights, early mornings and weekends to get everything accomplished. The Foundation’s board of directors consist of Vice President, Corey Phelps with Front Street Mortgage downtown and is a parent of second graders. Treasurer Jen Coleman works as the Executive Director of Grand Traverse Radiologists, PC, is an OMPS alum and is a parent of a fourth grader. Susie Shipman, Secretary, works with a Land Trust non-profit in the Virgin Islands and also holds a position on the Parks and Planning Commission at the Peninsula Township. We have two sayings we often laugh about during our weekly meetings. The first is, “We are on a bullet train. There are no stops and no getting off!” The second is used when things seem impossible, our tongue in cheek response is “how hard can it be?” Start a school from scratch, incorporate an entire community’s needs and wishes, all the while making sure our own children and our school’s children will thrive. And… raise $2million. That’s why we have a village behind us making this all something we never imagined we would accomplish. We just wanted to make sure our community, who spoke up so clearly, would never lose their forever school on Old Mission Peninsula.

Big City Just in time for the busy holiday party season, Traverse City has finally caught up with the Big City’s when it comes to catching an easier ride around town. A quick ride home is right on your phone, with the touch of a button. First came Lyft and now comes Uber ride services. All you need is to download the Uber app to request an uberX or uberXL for a ride all around Traverse City. You hail a ride through the smartphone app. Plug in your location and destination. Users can request and pay for a ride using a credit card stored on the app. No cash is exchanged between driver and passenger. The drivers are local and pre-screened, to mark its launch, Uber is offering a first ride free - up to $15 one way - to new customers using promo code TRAVERSECITY. Christmas Spirit Plan to join Christmas Songs and Stories with John Berry at the City Opera House on November 26th. Mention John Berry's name to just about any country music lover and the response will likely be, "What a voice!" Berry’s incredible tenor has delivered chart-topping singles. But it was his stunning performance of the title track of the 1995 CD O' Holy Night that led to his most enduring legacy. Annie is a fiery young orphan girl whose "home" is a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. Her seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy Oliver Warbucks. Quickly, she charms the hearts of the household staff and even the seemingly cold-hearted Warbucks cannot help but learn to love this wonderful girl. Holiday Cheers Fall is coming to a close and the Holiday Season is upon us. With all the entertaining, holiday meals and celebrating that goes on this time of year, many wonder what wines should I be pairing with what. My first golden rule is to drink what you like. If you have a palate that loves to try new things, then certainly the world is your oyster. The first Holiday coming our way is Thanksgiving, and like most holiday meals, people have varying family traditions to what food graces their table. Many of course love roasted turkey with all the sides, some will do spiral glazed ham, and others maybe roasted pork loin. For these dishes I would recommend a lighter red such as Pinot Noir, Beaujolais or even a great Lambrusco such as Lini Rose Lambrusco from Italy. If white wines are your thing, a bit richer white such as Chardonnay, Viognier or even an Arneis from Piedmont Italy would pair nicely. Whether you are looking for whites or reds, these wines will all pair well for these types of dishes. If you are going to be preparing a heavier dish such as venison, beef loin or braised pastrami I would certainly recommend going with a “bigger” red such as Vietti Barolo, Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino, Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon or maybe even a rich Molly Dooker Shiraz. I wouldn’t be bashful about serving any of these wines and each of them would pair up beautifully with heavier and richer food fare. Of course bubbles are enjoyable all the time, but during the holidays they just seem appropriate to help celebrate friends and family. There are sparkling wines produced all over the world from Champagne France, to Piedmont Italy to Napa Valley California. Whether you are looking for something a bit sweeter such as G.D Vajra Moscato di Asti from Piedmont Italy or something bone dry such as Duval Leroy Champagne, there is something for everybody. real date night should be fun, shouldn’t break the bank and, if you are all dressed up, should be at a place Where One Can See and Be Seen. Hello Fire Fly, the restaurant that lights up at night. Its lively ambiance gives the impression there is always a party going on, and the secret? Well, it’s just not the fabulous food or the fact that Fire Fly was the first place in town rolling up killer sushi. Nope, the real secret is the spectacular specials, making a random date night on a Tuesday or Thursday quite the event and possible for any couple to enjoy a great night out and have money left to pay the babysitter still. Who needs to wait for restaurant week? With these fantastic, eat-them-up specials, you can have a Date Night every night of the week. It wasn’t always that way, though, we found out as we sat down with owner Jeff Wiltse and his wife Trish, who Jeff insists is the brains of the operation. Jeff built a long and impressive chef resume from years of Big City Travels, and Trish is the numbers girl. She is a mighty smart lady, as they not only own Fire Fly but Bubba's, The Kitchen and Maddy's, too—pretty impressive for a foodie town. Back in 2002, the restaurant was named 310 (Trish’s idea, named after the address on Cass Street). Beautiful silk curtains were gracing the windows and an expensive allure that intimated it was only for fine dining. However, the bar in the back was always named Fire Fly. (Who knew?) Initially, Jeff wanted it to feel like it was a bar in his home, cozy, intimate and inviting—a place that oozes with the feeling of close friends all enjoying a good time.

Jeff got his wish, and the location boomed long before those nosmoking rules went into effect. This was a happening spot until 2 a.m.! I’m sure if the walls could talk … well, maybe not; this is a pretty small town. Life was good, very good. Then came along the year that changed everything, most importantly, wallets: the infamous downfall of 2008. Fine dining was no more, and the restaurant needed a shakeup. The little bug that changed it all was the firefly, a name Jeff chose because it is phonetically fun and pleasing to say; that’s all and no big explanation! So 310 got axed. Down came the silk curtains, up came the carpet, in went the wall dividers and an altogether change in the décor. Fire Fly emerged a little more laid back, lighter and fresh, to match the changing wave of the times.

Those changes are what make the place successful today. They creatively launched a genius little thing called Fire Fly Time Monday through Friday, where from 3 to 5:30 p.m. you can party on the fly. Happy hour drinks cost less than a cup of coffee. Chardonnay for $3 a glass and $2 well drinks, as well as $1 off drafts. Maybe now you understand why, as you pass by on the way home from work, this place is already rockin’! It beckons you in on any given day to “Come Fly with me.” And Fire Fly time offers more than just drinks at a discount; you can eat, too, for 1/3 off the menu prices. We’re talking delicious dining with cuisines from all around the globe. Mouthwatering temptations like Asian Skewers made out of Filet Mignon and New York Strip, and a Tuna Tartar that ravishes the taste buds. Their modern eclectic menu is so unique; it's one of the only restaurants in town where you can choose from a ten-item Sushi menu, and your date can relish on Fish and Chips or Taco’s, all with a local and sustainable flavor. Every Michigan kid that grows up ski racing idolizes the likes of speed demons Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn, superstar athlete’s whose names brand the most awesome sweet skis. High school ski racer Jeff Thompson was no different, except he had a wacky idea that led to creating his own sweet skis. 44

A decade or so later, his custom Shaggy Copper Country Skis are a successful family business based out of Boyne City that has taken skis to a whole new level. Creating a handcrafted Michigan made ski, with local natural resources, built by local people, specifically for our Midwestern region of Skiing. However, they can also tear up the slopes just about anywhere your winter wanderlust desires. At fifteen years old Jeff had a crazy notion of making a ski bike? The Thompson family

of four were avid skiers, dad, John, even coached the high school team. “When he cut the ski’s in two, he thought it was really cool, a lightbulb just went off in his head that he could do this,” remembers Shari, Jeffs mom. He went online and started talking to other people on skibuilders.com going into forums and learning what to do and what not to do along the way. “We are always doing projects, it’s just the way we roll,” laughs Shari. Jeff’s dad was in construction and brother Jonathon was

always tinkering too. Between the three of them, they came up with an experimental production on a race ski press. I didn’t ask what happened to the ski bike idea? They first labored in a makeshift workshop in the back of their homes unheated barn, in downstate South Lyon. They quickly realized the temperature was too cold to cure epoxy. That's when they took over the family's basement. Over the next few years, they tweaked, adjusted and modified many trials and error sample skis. be in the powder, trekking the creations to their up north home for a test run on the slopes. By 2008 they felt they had a great product actually to sell. Here Shaggy's Ski's was born, but this was a bunny slope start, it wasn't until 2011 that the company launched downhill Black Diamond style. Jeff was still attending Michigan Tech, brother Jonathon had moved to Colorado, and John and Shari’s construction company had suffered in the economic slump. "We had two houses, so it made sense to sell one, we put the house downstate on the market, and it sold in 2 days! Not what we had planned," laughs Shari. "Our house here was in a subdivision, so it sort of pushed us to buy a place for the business,” says Shari. The Shaggy’s Ski Shack is where all the magic happens, located right on I-75 in Boyne City. Conveniently close to Boyne Mountain Ski Resort, which helped to promote sales. 46

Once Jeff was out of school, he focused on branding and building a company website. This is where every grassroots business benefits from a good story, and Shaggy Ski’s has one. It comes all the way from the Upper Peninsula, in Yooper country. “My grandma, Lenora Thompson, was from Kearsarge,” tells Jeff. “Her uncle Shaggy was quite a character and the local jack-of-all-trades. He built skis back in the 1920s and made a pair for her. When it came time to name our company, what better than to follow in the family footsteps?” The story of the local wood is pertinent too, —ash, beech, and poplar—milled a mile and a half down the road at Matelski’s Lumber Company, another family-owned business in Boyne Falls. Jeff’s degree in Mechanical Engineering backs up the quality and talent that go into every pair of Shaggy Skis, proving they are more than just a great story. He’s studied

Designing Around the

Have you ever noticed when looking at beautifully photographed living spaces how there are never TVs in the shot? Who lives like that? Oh, electronics…..a designer’s nemesis…however, we recognize the desire and need to have them in your home.

So, in Northern Michigan design, the TV and fireplace go hand in hand. The question always ispresented as whether or not doors to conceal the TV are a good idea. I always answer “do you think you will close them?” Building cabinetry or a special recess for the TV takes a lot of good planning and can be expensive. So, if you aren’t going to close the doors, do not put them on. Open floor plans and lots of windows have made spaces for the TV much more challenging to find. Putting them over the fireplace has become a popular approach. Forget the star Monet painting or art sculpture that used to sit there. The TV has become front and center. A few design points are to plan a flush hearth on these areas. The size of the firebox and combustible requirements for the unit can make the TV awfully high. Areas like 52

bedrooms, where you may be laying down to watch TV are less critical and how far you can place your sofa from the TV all come into play. Doors on this application can be a fun approach and using a barn style makes them easier to open and close than the pocket doors usually required. Recessing the TV into the surround material makes is much cleaner and gives you a little more space to decorate the mantel, especially at the holidays. When you are not doing a fireplace, but have a generous wall to mount the TV on, adding storage cabinetry below and shelving around give it a well thought out look. Invest in a nice television as the sizes and technology are ever changing and doing

a

different one down the road may be tricky. Get a designer involved when planning the entertainment area of your home so the big black box is placed in a surrounding that blends it away vs. making it the star of the room.

T

he news has been inundated with natural disasters lately, from Texas to Florida, and Puerto Rico, communities have been uprooted and devastated. Memories of the Big Storm that blew through Leelanau County come back to mind. On that Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 winds of 100 miles per hour, pummeled the town of Glen Arbor at the height of the summer tourism season. Power was out, all roads were impassable, and only Andersons Market, Arts Tavern, Northwood Hardware and the Cherry Republic were open powered with generators. While it may seem to pale in comparison, and a distant memory. For the Fetzer family, it forced a comprehensive reconstruction of their Summer Home. A circa 1920 beautiful vintage cottage and kitchen house, highlighted in the Historic Cottages of Glen Lake Book. Two long years later the restoration and remodels are almost complete, with just the final finishing touches are left. The family plan to return just in time for a truly blessed Thanksgiving.

"The storm damage was so bad; it took us four and a half hours to get home from Crystal Lake, a trip that is usually only thirty minutes,” recalls Laurie, daughter of Wade and Bev Fetzer. "As we looked at Northwood, there was a thirty-foot-high wall of downed trees and power lines, it looked like a stuffed tunnel." Laurie goes on to explain that it took weeks just to clear the road. courts were destroyed, and my husband's parked car was totaled," says Laurie. Laurie’s family is from Chicago, and their tradition of spending summers Up North on Glen lake dates back to her great-grandparents in the early 1920's. They had a caboose child, (a young child with much older siblings) named Mary Jane. She suffered terribly with asthma, and it was suggested an escape from the Chicago suburbs to the country air of Northern Michigan was just the medicine she needed. The family visited and loved it, building a home the following year right on M-22. Outgrowing the original family cottage, and wanting to create their own memories Laurie’s parents, Wade and Bev looked for a new cottage on the lake. They found the perfect one and originally purchased their Glen Lake property back in 1974. The lot was extremely overgrown, but it housed two buildings originating back to the 1920’s built by an auto industry family from Detroit. One was the main house, which Laurie's family refers to as the Wing. This area was the prominent living area with a porch, five bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The other structure was the Kitchen House, with two small bedrooms it housed the staff back in its early days, where they would prepare 58

and cook all the meals for the main house. “I have lived all of my life in Chicago and always summered on Glen Lake,” recalls Laurie. So, to see the destruction that mother nature had unleashed on their cherished family retreat was simply heartbreaking.

“The wing was completely knocked off kilter, we had to build a new basement, it needed a new roof, basically just a complete reconstruction,” says Laurie. They used the bleak news of having to rebuild the cottage as an opportunity to alter the space, renovate, renew and refresh. Laurie did most of the renovation planning and worked on the more delicate details with Angela Goodall from Kitchen Choreography. As for the style inspiration, Angela told us. "It was a combination. Mom is attached to the cottage as a vintage historical home, but daughter Laurie wanted to update and modernize it. She went with grays, blues, and reds as a more up to date cottage look. Most of the original furniture was repurposed, so Mom was happy."

Laurie was happy with the final contemporary updates; to the main house, at long last, a kitchen was added, the central living space was opened up, and the porch was enclosed, creating a fourseason usable space. All four bedrooms now have en-suite bathrooms. The kitchen house was overhauled too. The separate kitchen and dining room have been made into one big space. The bathroom was

updated entirely, laundry and utility areas were added. The cottage now reflects a fresh open space for the family and extended family to enjoy. The attached stylish bathrooms and laundry areas are a welcome addition bringing convenience, fashion, and function. Just like many things in life it takes a tragedy to genuinely realize what you

have. This Glen Lake treasured home is no different. It’s back from the brink of disaster, with a new lease on life for the next generations. “My kids have grown up here, just like I have,” recalls Laurie. “Jennie, is 22 and in college, Mary’s a senior in high school, and Mark is a sophomore in high school. They love the Glen Lake Yacht Club. They have lifelong friends from summers spent there. The group activities, tennis,

All ages hang out together, it's like Camp Cousins, that never happens in Chicago. Jennie's dream is to work and live in Traverse City eventually." Their Thanksgiving table just arrived, custom made by Woodland Creek Furniture, an impressive piece of beautiful timber nine-foot-long by four and a half feet wide. This finely crafted Northern Michigan wood will be the centerpiece for the family to gather around and celebrate on their newly enclosed porch. On that day hopefully, they can recall with bittersweet laughter the day the historic trees fell on their same house and car, causing havoc and despair, coming full circle to being back together again, better and stronger than ever. 62
