GETTING READY
Swimsuit
BY SARAH WALENTYNOWICZ
Summer is just around the corner and with that comes the often dreaded swimsuit season. Have no fear--you still have plenty of time to get into better shape and feel great in your swimsuit! A few little changes to your regular routine are all it will take to feel and look great in time to put on your swimsuit.
1. MIND YOUR PORTION SIZES. Portions are out of control here in the United States. It’s true: 20 years ago, a regular blueberry muffin was 1.5 ounces and 210 calories. Today, a regular blueberry muffin is 5 ounces and 500 calories (according to http://www.nhlbi.nih. gov/health/educational/wecan/eatright/distortion.htm). That’s more than twice the calories and size! Controlling your portions when eating is a great way to still eat the foods you crave, but not overindulge in calories, which can lead to weight gain. Before eating, check the food labels for the serving size. That will tell you about how much you should consume and how many calories are in a serving. Have you ever opened a pint of ice cream and before you knew it, half of it was gone? Many of us are guilty of such “mindless eating.” Measuring out
portions before you start eating is a great way to avoid those added calories you hadn’t intended on eating in the first place.
2. MIX UP YOUR WORKOUTS.
A large part of getting a lean, toned body is also going to include hitting the gym. That said, if you want to change how your body looks, you also need to change what you’re doing. Our bodies get used to doing the same routine, leading to plateaus and not seeing the results we want from our programs. One of the best ways to avoid plateau is to mix up your routine. If you’ve been hitting the same cardio tone class for the past few weeks (or months), it may be time for a change for your body to see results with your program. Try a new class or see a personal trainer for tips on how to mix up what you’ve been doing.
3. COMBINE CARDIO AND STRENGTH MOVES.
For most of my fat loss clients, I have found mixing cardio and strength moves to be most effective when it comes to toning and leaning the body out. This can be as simple as doing circuit training for your workouts (one exercise after another with as little rest in between as possible) or you can really kick your workouts up a notch by completing a mixture of cardio moves (like squats, chest press, or cable rows) alternated with fat blasting cardio moves (like jumping jacks, jumping rope, or high knees). Combining cardio and strength moves not only allows you to burn a ton of calories in your workout, but also helps you to gain dual benefits: cardiovascular and strength. Here are two examples of workouts you can do that will combine cardio and strength:
20 | UPTOWN MAGAZINE
CIRCUIT WORKOUT
Complete 2-3 sets of this circuit, depending on how much time you have.
1. Plank x 45 seconds
2. Squat x 15
3. Incline chest press x 15
4. Seated cable row x 15
5. Wood chop x 10 each side
6. Alternating lunges x 10 each side
7. Dumbbell lateral raises x 12
8. Bicep curls x 12
9. Triceps extension x 12
CARDIO/STRENGTH COMBINATION WORKOUT
Complete 2-3 sets of this workout, depending on how much time you have.
1. Step up x 10 each leg
2. Jumping Jacks x 20
3. Push up (on knees or toes) x 10-12
4. Mountain climbers x 20
5. Seated cable row x 12-15
6. High knees x 20
7. Dumbbell overhead press x 12-15
8. Butt kicks x 20
9. Reverse crunch on bench x 12
10. Ice skaters x 10 each way
With summer only weeks away, these tips will help you get swimsuit ready in no time! NOW is the time to start minding your portions, change up what you’ve been doing, and definitely include both cardio and strength as part of your fitness regimen. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something a little different. Your body will thank you! UT

THE BENEFITS OF &
DermalFillers
Uptown Magazine asked Dr. Richard Moore of The Lifestyle Center in Ladue some questions that we feel will put us all at ease when deciding to get Dermal Fillers.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DERMAL FILLERS?
Dermal fillers provide an easy way to enhance the volume of a given area and to reduce wrinkles. Whether young or old, dermal fillers can provide benefits. As an example, I recently injected Restylane silk to augment the lips of a young beauty contestant who went on to represent her state in the Miss America Beauty Pagent. As we age, there is a loss of soft tissue, bone, collagen and elastin. This results in an inward and downward collapse of the facial structures. Dermal fillers can be used to restore the volume and enhance the lift of the structures in a process we call the Liquid Facelift.
BEAUTY FITNESS
WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
There are several types of dermal fillers that range from those that stimulate your body to produce collagen such as Sculptra and Bellafill to those which occupy space such as Restylane and Juvederm.
HOW LONG WILL THE DERMAL FILLERS LAST?
Longevity of dermal fillers is determined by the filler used, the location injected, and individual variation from one person to the next. The collagen stimulating dermal fillers such as Bellafill and Sculptra have been shown to have effects typically lasting longer than 5 and 2 years respectfully. The hyaluronic acid fillers typically will last 6-18 months depending on the site of injection and the specific product selected.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH DERMAL FILLER TO USE?
The correct selection of a dermal filler is important and should be left up to the medical professional performing the treatment such that complications are avoided.
WHERE CAN DERMAL FILLERS BE INJECTED?
Dermal fillers can be injected in virtually any area of the face where there is volume loss or wrinkles. In some instances it is better to use a neuromodulator like Dysport or Botox to treat wrinkles and that can be discussed during your consultation.
HOW MUCH DO DERMAL FILLERS COST?
There is a great deal of variation in the cost of dermal fillers from one center to another and from on filler to another. It is best to schedule a consultation to define your needs. Cost is going to be tied to the volume of product injected as well as the specific product. If you are concerned about the cost of a specific dermal filler, most providers will tell you their pricing over the phone before you come in for a consultation.
HOW MUCH DOWN TIME CAN I EXPECT FOLLOWING MY INJECTIONS?
In most cases there is no downtime. At The Lifestyle Center we use micro-cannula to place the majority of our dermal fillers. This reduces the likelihood of bruising by 80-90%. You may have a modest amount of swelling for 1-3 days following your injections. UT

In the spring a homeowner’s fancy may likely turn to thoughts of – landscaping! It’s that time of year when we dream about improving the appearance of our somewhat boring yards. Think about it, landscaping is really just another art form. Like a painting, its elements include color, composition, balance, and layered textures. That’s everything a beautiful garden should have. What’s hot and what’s not? Here are current design trends for updating your outdoor space this spring.
There’s a definite move toward landscapes that are aesthetically pleasing, but also offer low maintenance and sustainability. Forget the old fashioned way of centering small plots of vegetation in a front lawn. There’s a lot more going on in the landscaping world. Of course plantings should first be chosen for their curb appeal. But most importantly, a good landscape
project should be scaled to a property’s size. This way it will accent and show off a home’s unique architecture. So what if the grass is always greener? Surprising as it seems, vast green lawns are becoming things of the past. Low maintenance is the key. Instead of constantly watering and fertilizing large expansive yards, homeowners are now

ripping up the grass, and replacing it with lush gardens.
All it takes is careful planning using an artist’s eye. Flowers and plants can provide the edging along stone pathways. Retaining walls can serve as flower beds too. Terraces, patios, and stepping stones take over where grass has been. It’s not quite the look of Anne Hathaway’s cottage, but you get the idea. It doesn’t mean a yard will become haphazardly overgrown. On the contrary, it should be orderly, beautiful and easy to care for.
...a good landscape project should be scaled to a property’s size. This way it will accent and show off a home’s unique architecture.
How to begin? This is the fun part. It’s better to seek the advice of any good landscaping company before you start. They will advise, plan and do the all hard work. As for the kind of plants and flowers to use, there are so many choices in our area. With all the new varieties available in nurseries and home centers, plants are returning to importance in our backyards too. The possibilities are endless. Besides traditional flowering plants, we see fewer annuals and more perennials

being planted. Visit any nursery and you’ll be over whelmed with the variety. Besides multicolored flowers, some homeowners are going for more subtle color ranges - softer palettes. And how about just one color like all white, or simply all green?
Gardeners also want multi-seasonal appeal in their landscapes. The rusty colors of autumn and ornamental grasses that flower late are all part of a good design plan.
Native and drought tolerant plants, container plantings, and edible gardens are all the rage these days. Popped in

flower beds, they create an interesting mix with other traditional plants. Look for herbs, ornamental grasses, and even vegetables! Yes, even veggies are now treated as foliage. Edibles can easily be incorporated into flower beds. Plus, they’re beautiful and good for you too!
Unusual containers, planters and urns bring beauty and interest to terraces, decks and patios. They’re relatively inexpensive and can be easily moved and changed out according to the seasons.
We hope you’ve been inspired. If you want your picture perfect dreams to come true, get outdoors and bring on some flower power this spring! UT

anuary is over! Spring is on the horizon! Summer will be here and now is the time to once and for all plan your own beautiful, warm, relaxing retreat in your own backyard. No more trips to Florida crowded beaches and airports and exorbitant airfares to all-inclusive destinations. With the money you save on one or two trips for a family of four, you can use your well-earned funds on your own elegant, upscale, personal, magnificent designer pool
You know what you like. You have a style, taste and your own personality that will be reflected not just in the water, but in the shape, materials, size, color and features of your own designer pool, enhanced by lawn furniture, landscaping and accessories. The size will depend on how you chose to use it. A bigger pool will be for parties, swimming Olympic style laps and large families with greater depth. Smaller will be intimate, easier to heat, and still swimmable and require less cost in materials and yet fulfill your family’s needs.
Use your imagination! Would you like your yard to look like the beach at Puerto Vallarta with a tropical rainforest look? Does a pool in the desert sound more your style? A Roman bath house in a Mediterranean courtyard? A small lake in the woods. The sky is the limit! Are you a musician? How about a violin shaped pool? An artist could have a palate shape! Do you like

slick, clean, modern lines? You can design your pool to reflect any architectural style that will hopefully be a wonderful extension of your living space.
Hire a pool designer company. A good one should look at the size and shape of your space, style of your home and recommend and show you a variety of choices. Pools come in oval. kidney-shaped, rectangle and L shapes, figure 8, Roman or Grecian and free form. Your designer should help you decide between vinyl, concrete and fiberglass while considering your budget while also offering ideas on where the depth should change, a kiddie end, the right tiles, molding, grout, use of trim tiles and mosaics and help you with the water features and landscaping. Using the knowledge and experience of a professional designer will make decisions about which materials, colors, sizes and textures work perfectly with your own unique style. The designer might also suggest storage shed with changing room, equipment holders that blend in with your design. Definitely the designer and the pool vender should make sure that you understand the process of building and installation and help you with your budgeting.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once. Waterfalls, slides, fountains, intricate lighting and pool heaters can be added later and help keep costs down at the beginning. Waiting can be to your advantage since after using the pool, you may have better ideas and find the perfect Bar-B-Que, outdoor oven, bar, fireplace or perfectly styled furniture that you hadn’t seen before you spent tons of money. You may learn after using your pool where you should put your additional lights and walkways and what would be handier in a different location.
A good pool/designer company will explain the maintenance that is needed in specific terms in order that you can do it yourself or hire a pool service. Vacuuming and cleaning the water, using a skimmer and pump, cleaning the tiles and care of surfaces that you have purchased should all be spelled out for you. Landscaping makes all the difference! The perfect tree for the perfect setting that will not shed leaves on your pool area can save time and trouble. The wrong rocks in the wrong setting can look out of place just as the wrong colors of blooms can clash with your pool’s colors rather than enhance and be awe-inspiring. Perennials that bloom in turn with the seasons will bring magic to your own private oasis no matter what the time of year.
So do it! Clip pictures out of magazines, check on line, visit pool construction web sites and pool supply stores! Maybe you already know exactly what would make your perfect, secluded, retreat! Those of us who are older and from the St. Louis area remember when towns called Gumbo or Bellefontaine were suddenly called Chesterfield and became what overnight was a mecca for large corporate headquarters, CEOs, hotels, an airport, malls and homes. The land was rich in Native American history and resources and became the perfect place for development. Did you know that the 1904 World’s Fair had streets and sidewalks in Forest Park made from Gumbo mud? One of the first places I remember as a landmark which was then Logan College and now Logan University. It stood alone on the south side of Highway 40 in 1973. Others remember the Spirit of St. Louis Airport which seemed such a long drive from downtown St. Louis.

CHESTERFIELD MALL STATUE BY ARTIST BOB CASSIDY
Chesterfield had some unlucky events in the past. A fierce F-4 tornado blasted through in January of 1967 hitting a nursing home and River Bend Estates and the Great Flood of 1993 when Chesterfield Valley was covered in water from a broken levee. Now, due to the resilience of the community, the same region is the home to Reinsurance Group of America World Headquarters, St. Luke’s Hospital, McBride and Sons, Monsanto and a host of other large and small companies, restaurants, hotels, retail stores, schools and elegant homes. Hidden behind Chesterfield’s corporate buildings and chain hotels that line Highway 40, you may be amazed at the wonderful things to see and do with your family!
Chesterfield’s Faust Park has a walking trail, playground, the St Louis Carousel and the enchanting Butterfly House" with the giant cement butterfly sculpture by Bob Cassilly. The St. Louis Carousel was built in 1920 at Forest Park Highland and survived a fire in 1963. The St. Louis County Historic Buildings Commission helped with the restoration and the Carousel was opened in Faust Park on May 9, 1987.
Chesterfield also has an amphitheater, the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex, and the Family Aquatic Center. Your child can take acting lessons and theatre training with STAGES
Performing Arts Academy at the Kent Center For Theatre Arts. Make it a family affair at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Chesterfield which seasonally offers Clever Productions’ family murder mysteries in their private room!
A trip to any one of the three malls can fill an entire day! Chesterfield Mall features an AMC with 14 theaters, Eddie Bauer, American Eagle Outfitters and Pottery Barn among others. Stores at Taubman Prestige Outlets across from Chesterfield Commons include H & M, Polo Ralph Lauren and other brand names. Premium Outlets just east of the Daniel Boone Bridge hosts a vast selection such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Armani, Samsonite and Nike.
Established in 1980, John Anthony Jewelers is family owned. Highly praised in the St. Louis area for crafting custom jewelry and repairing on site, the store is located on Baxter Center in Chesterfield.
Talayna's of Chesterfield is located by Dierbergs in the Four Seasons Shopping Center and has been in business for over 50 years! They now serve Gluten Free Pizza and, of course, great Mediterranean and Italian cuisine.
In 1937, the Smokehouse Market was known as the Chesterfield Mercantile Company.

When I die Dublin will be written in my heart. - James Joyce
Dublin
BY LINDA SPALL
Bustling, magical, ancient and yet modern, Dublin can touch your heart, your soul and mind. With stunning architecture, monuments, museums, gardens and eclectic neighborhoods, the city offers something for everyone.
Whether coming to Ireland to trace your ancestors, to discover the green countryside, for business or to taste a Guiness, you will find a city full of life, pubs, history, and charm. As Ireland has two major airports, Shannon on the west coast and Dublin on the east, for many, Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, is the first Irish city a visitor will see. Sitting on the coast of the Irish Sea, one can only imagine how the proximity to England and Northern Europe has influenced the country’s history and people. If you are into history, Vikings came and married the Celts (who were citizens since 700 BC) and then the British who later decided Ireland was theirs. Geography made all the difference.
When visiting any city for the first time, I always recommend that you take a hop on hop off bus tour on your first venture out. Not only does it help you get a lay of the land, but introduces you to the points of interest and to the personality and ambiance of the town. Dublin has the sea to the east, the rest of Ireland to the west

and the Liffey River that runs through the town, separating the north and the south. Speaking of sightseeing, ask your travel agent about the The Dublin Pass. It’s a package which gives visitors airport transfers and free admission to over 30 top attractions in Dublin which is well worth the price!
When is the best time to go? I went in March to the Cliffs of Mohr on the west coast and it was so cold and windy, I bought two wool sweaters and finally understood why there were so many sheep in Ireland. Summer, of course, is the best time to go (high of 70 degrees or so) and therefore the most expensive. St. Patty’s Day temperatures go from 45 degrees or so up to 55 degrees.
Here is a list of only some of the “Must See” sites!
Doing the genealogy thing? Go to the National Library Genealogy Service. (If you do a bit of research ahead of time, you will really make use of your time once you are there.)
Temple Bar is one of those neighborhoods like Riverwalk or Paris Latin Quarter, not that it looks like either of those places but has cafes, artists galleries, the Irish Film Institute, pubs and cobblestone streets that are maintained and fun to stroll!

Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison built in 1796 which is now a museum. The British put Irish revolutionaries here to be held and or executed. Some folks find this one of the top sights to see because of the patriotic efforts for Irish Independence.
A trip to Guinness's Brewery is a must. Originally called the St. Jame’s Gate Brewery it was funded in 1759 by Mr. Author Guinness. The history of Guinness beer is depicted in the Guiness Storehouse and is a major attraction not to be missed!
There are two medival cathedrals of Dublin. Saint Patricks has Marsh’s Library which is the oldest public library in Ireland, around 300 years old. Christchurch has an exhibition Dublin life in the times of the Vikings.

One of the most famous sites is Trinity College which ranks in the top 25 of the world’s oldest universities. The Book of Kells, an ornate, fantastically artful 9th century book of the four gospels and life of Jesus is the national treasure. Just walking around the historic area is worth the trip as you will see the government buildings, a park with a statue of Oscar Wilde and Georgian architecture. Trinity College was founded by Queen Elizabeth the 1st.
I love the Writers Museum, full of George B. Shaw, Beckett, James Joyce and Yeats and Sheridan and the aforementioned Oscar Wilde.

CHEF
Chef Jon Berger of Napoli 2 CONFIDENTIAL
Chef Jon Berger, a childhood friend of Ande and Kye Pietoso, started his career in the kitchen by accident. One day while hanging out after school with the Pietoso boys, their father Tony told them they had to go to work and help out because a dishwasher didn’t show up for his shift. That night Jon washed dishes. Fifteen years later, he hasn’t left.
Jon worked his way up to Sous Chef at Café Napoli, the family’s flagship restaurant that opened in 1989. Finally in 2008, Napoli 2 was born. Chef Berger was deservingly offered the Executive Chef position. He accepted.
Chef Berger, who was honored as one of the “Best Chefs of America” in 2013, lives for creating that special something for his guests. Jon changes the menu a few times a year at Napoli 2 based on the season. All of the pastas are hand rolled daily and all of our dishes are created and perfected by him or under his close supervision.
FROM TOP:
TUNA CRUDO
RUM BABA
SPAGHETTI NERO E BIANCO FRUITTI DI MARE
Biggest influence:
I would have to say that family is my biggest influence. Starting with the support from my family as well as that from the Pietoso family to the family that we’ve built at Napoli 2. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
Celebrity you'd like to cook for:
Mario Batali - I grew up when the Food network fad was blasting off. I was ultimately attracted to his style of cooking especially since I was working in an Italian restaurant.
Favorite food trend:
The concept of farm to table is something that I really appreciate. We currently work with a lot of great farmers who supply us with local tomatoes, mushrooms and all sorts of wonderful produce.
Ultimate meal:
I would love to enjoy a dinner in Piedmont, Italy feasting on truffles and ragu pastas, accompanied by a nice Barolo.
If you weren't a chef:
Probably something to do with sports. Outside of the kitchen, I am definitely a fan of all sports.
Favorite item to cook: Pasta for sure!

FARRO & ARUGULA SALAD WITH HONEY LEMON DRESSING
Serves
VickiBensinger
at home with In-Home Culinary Classes
With spring right at our doorstep and swimsuit season soon to follow, many of us find ourselves trying to eat healthier with the thought of exposing more of our skin. Of course eating right shouldn’t be singled out to the warmer months, but year round.
I enjoy salads and they’re perfect this time of the year. However, this Farro and Arugula salad will be welcome at your table anytime.
What is farro? The term farro is commonly used when referring to three ancient wheat varieties first cultivated in the Fertile Crescent and still grown in Italy: farro piccolo (einkorn), farro medio (emmer), and farro grande (spelt). Farro has a roasted, nutty flavor, and distinctive chewy texture that comes 3 ways:
• whole grain - the highest in fiber and nutrients like Vitamin B3 and zinc, but requires overnight soaking and 1 hour to cook
• semi-pearled - retains only a portion of the bran and nutrients, but can be prepared within 25 minutes
• pearled - which takes the least time to cook but has no bran at all.
As a type of wheat, farro is unsuitable for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance or a wheat sensitivity or allergy.
When purchasing Farro be sure to check the packaging to insure what type you’re buying. The difference could mean dinner in 30 minutes vs. 24 hours.
This Farro and Arugula salad is light, refreshing, nutritious, and packed with flavor. The arugula offers a peppery taste, while the feta cheese and Nicoise olives are perfect, lending a slight saltiness to the dish. Be sure not to substitute regular almonds for the Marcona Almonds, unless of course you have an allergy to nuts. The Marcona Almonds take this salad to the next level. All ingredients when combined with a drizzle of Honey Lemon dressing will have you and your guests coming back for seconds and thirds, which is great since it makes a large portion.
Perfect as is, or with the addition of grilled chicken or fish to make it an entree.
I hope you’ll try this! For more recipes follow VickiBensinger.com.
INGREDIENTS:
SALAD:
• 1 cup/16 oz. (454 grams) dry Farro
• 1 1/2 cups water(355 ml)
• 1/2 lb.(227 grams) baby arugula
• handful of Marcona almonds
• 1/2 cup (454) grams), sliced cherry tomatoes
• 1/3 cup (43 grams) Nicoise olives
• 1/2 cup (227 grams)good feta crumbled
DRESSING:
• 1 lemon (approximately 1/4 cup (59 ml))
• Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (1/3 cup (78 ml) or to taste)
• 1-2 (7-14 grams) teaspoons honey or to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a saucepan bring water to a boil. Add Farro, cover and simmer for approximately 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool before adding to salad.
2. Make dressing by squeezing the juice of one lemon into a small bowl, then whisking in olive oil to taste until you get the right balance. Add honey to taste, and emulsify.
3. Place all ingredients into a bowl and toss with dressing, adding salt and pepper to taste.

PENO
Peno is a southern Italian restaurant that embodies the “soul” of South Italy. Drawing from the culture, Peno offers many vegetable and seafood dishes that have been passed down from the owner’s mamma’s mamma’s mamma, bringing them to the forefront. During the day, Peno is a fast, casual lunch venue that offers counter service and lunch specials, including a “working man’s” lunch special that is different every day, yet the same each week. At night, Peno “kicks it up a notch” with table service and high-end dishes that are not available during lunch. Peno also offers carryout or delivery. Not only can you come in and enjoy an oldschool meal with friendly ‘pizons’, but you can also have it delivered to your home or office, as long as you are in the Clayton area. Experience the new southern Italian soul food that is Peno.
Peno is located at 7600 Wydown at the corner of Wydown and Westwood in the Clayton Moorlands. Phone Number is 314-899-9699. Hours are TuesdaySaturday 11 AM - 10 PM, with delivery on Friday and Saturday available until 11:00 pm.
COPPER PIG
Do not let the name fool you- pork isn’t the only offering on the menu at Copper Pig, a neighborhood eatery that is quickly becoming a favorite spot in south St. Louis City. A menu, inspired by owner, Nhat Nguyen’s favorite dishes, features small plates, such as Beet Fries, Deviled Eggs with Bacon Chips, and Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Miso and Bacon, just to name a few. For a heartier appetite, try the Shrimp Po-Boy Sandwich, Avocado Tacos, or a Bi Bim Bap Bowl. Satiate that sweet tooth with a Churro Ice Cream Sandwich, or a rotating selection of Clememtine’s Ice Cream.
If you’re looking for eclectic, handcrafted cocktails, you’ll want to try Copper Pig’s Spanish Harlem, a smoky ancho chile Manhattan, or the Purple Rain, made with fresh, whole, blackberries and lime.
For a one-of-a-kind culinary experience, check out Copper Pig at 4611 Macklind Avenue. Copper Pig is open for lunch from 11-2 and dinner, 4-10, Monday through Saturday, and also on Sunday for brunch from 10-2.
NAMI RAMEN
Ramen’s reputation is getting a welldeserved upgrade. If you think of the 10-cent-per-package microwaveable “meal”, consumed in large quantities by college students when you think of ramen, Nami Ramen is here to entirely derail your train of thought. Yes, it begins with noodles, but that’s just the foundation. Nami Ramen offers an endless selection of fresh accompaniments for your bowl, ranging from protein such as Katsu (Japanaese style fried chicken), tofu, pork-belly, and egg, to fresh vegetables such as tomato, spinach, and Brussels sprouts-just to name a few. Nami Ramen invites you to experience REAL ramen at 46 N. Central Avenue in the heart of Clayton. Prepare to be BOWLEDover. One taste, and you’ll see ramen in a whole new light. Slurp, savor, and repeat! Nami Ramen is open from 11-9 Sunday through Thursday, and 11-10 on Friday and Saturday. UT

WENDY WIESE
Darling of Donnybrook
MBY SHEILA FRAYNE RHOADES
eet Wendy Wiese, St. Louis’ highly respected radio and television broadcaster.
Wendy has endeared herself to fans of KETC-TV’s talk show Donnybrook. She’s its rose among thorns, keeping the opinionated debaters polite and on course. (The DB gang consists of Wendy, Charlie Brennan, Bill McClellan, Alvin Reid, and Ray Hartmann.)
Although born in Little Rock, Wendy was raised with two younger brothers in West County. “For all but four years of my life, I've lived here. St. Louis is my hometown. I love it.” Broadcasting was in her blood. “I watched news starting at age 4. It was all I ever wanted to do.”
Wendy graduated from Visitation High School in 1979. She earned a Mass Communications degree at Fontbonne University in 1983. “I interned at KMOX during the summer before my senior year.” Her career steadily progressed. “I accepted the first job offered to me at KVCM in Montgomery City, MO. I worked long hours in the news department, after an already unheard of daily eight hour air shift. It was educational, but took a real physical toll.”
So it was back home, and a year later she relocated to Joplin, MO. “I worked for legendary Bill Neal, owner of KSYN-KQYX in SW Missouri. After seven months there, I received a call from KWTO in Springfield, MO. They were interviewing for a News Anchor/co-host with the morning guy on FM Rock 99. (I felt I was working my way up I-44.) I joined and was happy to remain there, until…….”
Wendy explains how she came to KMOX in 1986. “We had a major competitor in Springfield who tried breaking up our team because of our high ratings. They submitted a tape of me to West Coast stations, thinking I'd love to move there. I received a call from San Francisco and thought it was a joke. Then KMOX called, Mr. Hyland hired me and my life changed.” For the next 10 years Wendy remained on the KMOX morning show with Bob Hardy and Bill Wilkerson.
Bob Hyland died in 1992 and Bob Hardy in 1993. KMOX began changing quickly, which led Wendy to move to KTRS. She worked there until 2006.
How she came to Donnybrook is another story. “I'd known Martin Duggan (the late DB
founder) and Ray Hartmann for years through their Point Counterpoint segment on KMOX. Martin regularly asked me to fill in on DB for Anne Keefe and Nan Wyatt. At that point I didn't want to leave my young girls. When they lost Nan, I couldn't say no. I will be forever indebted to Martin and the guys for welcoming me into what is a very special little clubhouse.”
Wendy met her husband of 27 years, Chris Carter, when he was interning for KTTS news in Springfield. “We were both covering a homicide and met in a detective's office. It really set the tone for our relationship.” Today Chris is Human Resources Director at Mercy Medical Center. Wendy and Chris have two grown daughters, Kate and Maggie.
Besides Donnybrook, Wendy has been with Catholic talk station, Relevant Radio since 2006. “I’m their PM Drive News Anchor and host On Call.”
Wendy has won many media awards including - Ohio State Radio and Television News Directors and Missouri Broadcasters Association awards. “I think the 1999 Media Persons of the Year that Bill Wilkerson and I received from the PRESS CLUB was a highlight. To have those years together and receive that kind of recognition was special.”
She received Archbishop Robert J. Carlson’s Excellence in Communication Award in 2014.
Wendy is Emeritus Director at Mathews Dickey Boys and Girls Club. UT
