Twenty one years ago my family and I moved to St. Louis from Northeastern Ohio and quickly discovered the City of Clayton and the jewel that it is! Living and working in Clayton is awesome because of the diversity of great people, businesses, parks, as well as fabulous restaurants for all to enjoy. a perfect
try the honeymoon?
Hby liNda sPall
e asked. The date is set. Suddenly, your world is bridesmaid dresses, invitations, font styles, flowers and tuxes with months of planning. The frenzied preparations are made, the parties, the rehearsal dinner go without a hitch, the special day finally arrives. You can relax now and begin your lives together. Relax with the perfect Caribbean honeymoon.
Why the Caribbean? Hawaii and Europe are at the very least, 12 hours away from St. Louis. The Caribbean can be 4 hours or less. Would you like a worry free prepaid vacation where you don’t have to carry a wallet? Can you imagine having unlimited drinks, meals, entertainment and activities with choices of restaurants, swimming pools and oceanfront rooms? Welcome to the world of Caribbean All-Inclusive properties. Everything and we mean everything is included. Drinks, accommodations, tipping, taxes and fees. The only exception is if the particular island has a country arrival or departure tax which is paid separately (example: Jamaica) or if a particular resort has a resort fee. At an All-Inclusive resort, you check in and the rest is all relaxation and fun.
We are lucky enough in St. Louis to have choices of vendors who service our area. Apple Vacations offers charters to certain destinations. This means instead of using regular published air, such as Delta and American, which have connections to
Photos Courtesy saNdy meyer
the Caribbean, Apple has chartered flights that leave from Terminal 1 and return into Terminal 2 (the old East Terminal). The chartered flights are nonstop and leave on certain days to certain destinations for certain lengths of time. You can fly nonstop with Apple to Cancun, Mexico (bus to Riviera Maya), Montego Bay (Jamaica) and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic). All these destinations offer romantic, beachfront properties and you can find the perfect ambiance, location, and style for you and your special someone. Funjet, Travel Impressions, Sandals Resorts are among some of the other vendors that service St Louis and use published air.
Once you have decided the duration of your honeymoon, you can narrow down your choices. If you have more than 7 days to spend, you may not mind taking the extra time to fly to St.
that fits your needs. If a luxurious spa sounds like your cup of tea, the Zoetry Agua in Punta Cana has bathrobes, slippers, a fitness center, tennis court, spa treatments, beauty salon, afternoon tea time with live plants for tea infusion. The Grand Hotel Rose Hall in Montego Bay (Adults Only) features 24 hour food and beverage service, 4 restaurants, 6 bars, personal butler service, 4 pools, spa and fitness center and is part of a complex where you have access to amenities and facilities of the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites and Rose Hall Beach. The Riviera Maya coast, south of Cancun, Mexico offers Secrets, Dreams, Zoetry, Riu, among many others and are preferred by some because of the proximity to Xcaret (the rainforest activity park), Tulum and Chichen Itza, and Isla Mujeres where you can take a cruise and experience the Eco-park on the island.
bbean!
John, Aruba, St. Lucia or the Bahamas. If you are looking at 7 days or less, I would recommend the charters.
On your honeymoon, you most likely will not want to be sharing your resort with children, teens and spring breakers. You can chose from a variety of “couples only” or “adults only” resorts. “Adults Only” means 18 years or older. Couples Resorts (a brand name) allows couples only. Secrets Resorts are “Adults Only”. Do your homework and find the right fit for you.
Take into account whether you would like to stay on the resort property the entire time or would you like to explore the local town, do some shopping, tour the rain forest, visit ruins, swim with the dolphins, etc. This will help you pick the destination
Another consideration is room category. Based on your budget, you can get a standard room, gardenview room, oceanview room, and oceanfront room. You can also chose a room with a balcony, a Jacuzzi, a private pool or a butler. Check out possible honeymoon packages. Some properties include the package at no extra cost and you simply need to request the service.
Others will charge an additional price, providing special amenities such as a bottle of wine, spa certificates, fruit baskets, tee-shirts, room upgrades, honeymoon suites, etc.
As I strongly emphatically suggest, go to your local travel agent. Your honeymoon is a once in a lifetime experience. Deal with a professional, experienced travel consultant who will give you personal service where your questions will be answered and your ideal honeymoon is a dream come true.
Terri Gaffney, a travel agent with over 30 years of experience says “The perfect honeymoon? Sitting on a beautiful white, walkable beach, next to the clearest, most beautiful turquoise water with a Pina Colada with coconut rum in hand, on a lounge chair, next to the person I love.” Wow. ut

F.O.B.
Irecently visited with Kay Wallace, the inspiration for F.O.B. Saint Louis, a mustsee decorator home furnishings store, and she told me the fascinating story of how her thriving retail business evolved.
Q. What gave you the inspiration to start F.O.B.?
A. I started F.O.B. Saint Louis ten years ago because I love to collect beautiful things for my home and I love to decorate. I also wanted to be able to offer beautiful merchandise at affordable prices. I started out with a small shop in Kirkwood, then I relocated to larger space in Chesterfield’s Lamp & Lantern Village.
Q. What kind of merchandise is available at your store?
A. My store carries a lively mix of painted furniture such as chairs, benches, tables and chests, floral arrangements which I call ‘permanent botanicals’, wonderful decorating books and cook books, decorative ceramic plates, handpainted picture frames, decorative pillows, fashion jewelry, note cards, lamps, rugs, and garden furniture and accessories. I attend all of the Atlanta and Dallas shows every year to find new merchandise.
26 | Uptown Magazine
Q. What is your philosophy about interior design?
A. I feel that your home and your surroundings should reflect your personality. I also believe that your home should lift your spirits and make you feel good. I suggest to my customers that they select home furnishings and decorative accessories in happy, bright colors such as various shades of green, pink, red, yellow and blue. I especially like to mix bright colors for my interior design projects.
Q. How do you work with your customers?
A. I tell my customers to bring in a photograph of the rooms that they want to decorate. This gives me an idea of their taste and their lifestyle. I sometimes visit my customers’ homes and I suggest merchandise that I think would fit in well with their rooms. Sometimes my customers will bring in photographs of the rooms after they’ve been redecorated. It is always gratifying to see the finished results. We provide our customers with the finishing decorator touches which is why they enjoy shopping at our store. They become our friends.
We provide our customers with the finishing decorator touches
Q. What are the most popular decorating trends?
A. I think that the casual, informal look such as shabby chic and country European are what my customers are most interested in.
Q. What is your decorating style?
A. My decorating style is ‘country European’. This is such a popular decorating style. I prefer to decorate with colorful floral chintz fabrics and painted furniture. I also like decorative accessories which give a finished look to any room such as embellishing hanging paintings with colorful ribbons and bows and hanging decorative plates on walls. You can create a beautiful ‘ indoor’ garden effect with baskets of vibrantly colored flowers and seasonal floral wreaths hung on doors and walls. I have a floral design department and three very talented floral designers who custom design our fabulous floral arrangements. ut

A New Trend In Interior Design
“Tangerine, with her lips of flame; If the color keeps, Louis Philippe's to blame…….”
Song lyrics by Johnny Mercer
Tangerine was a popular song in 1942. Seventy years later, it’s still a hit but now in the form of a designer color! Every year color authority Pantone (known for its color matching system used in a variety of industries, manufacture of colored paint, fabric, and plastics) helps designers set certain colors as the in shades. In 2012, Pantone forecast Tangerine as their color trend of the year.
Designing woman, Liz McGovern of June Roesslein Interiors, recently worked on a contemporary Belleville residence which reflects the latest direction of interior design. McGovern incorporated bright colors like Tangerine into a surprising new living room space, and remodeled a modern master bathroom for her discerning client.
liviNg room
by sheila frayNe rhoades
McGovern explained, “The homeowner and I worked together to come up with all the colors to be considered. She loved earthy colors, and Baked Clay was a color she especially liked. It was inspired by the fabric we chose for the window treatments both in the living room, as well as the kitchen (not shown). It was coincidental that Pantone had chosen Tangerine for their color of the year. So we used popular Baked Clay and a toned-down version of Tangerine on the living room’s accent walls, adding punch to this altogether earthy interior.” Neutrals teamed with chocolate, greens, and caramel made up the rest of this welcoming look,” McGovern commented, “Designers call this the Urban-look. Distinctly modern, it’s characterized
28 | Uptown Magazine urban
by striking colors, nontraditional home materials and innovative design features.”
The Urban-look was also reflected in the room’s furnishings. Everything was replaced with new seating and accent pieces, except the client’s entertainment center. McGovern said, “We did a complete overhaul with a fresh, bold new look. All items were purchased through June Roesslein Interiors.” Asked how much the room was changed, McGovern said, “The homeowner originally had neutral walls, carpet and furniture. The living room sorely needed some color! We removed the old carpet, added an espresso finish to the hardwood floor, and then covered it with an abstract design area rug.” Also changed was the light stained fireplace mantel to an espresso stain, in order to match the new floor. Two pieces of art from the homeowner’s own collection were hung over the refreshed mantel.
The simplified window treatments shown in the living room are colorful panels hung on a decorative brushed nickel rod. The new sofa is made of an easily maintained, soft, suede fabric for an active family of three plus a dog. Chairs and ottomans feature very durable yet dramatic materials for maximum style and practicality. The neutral sofa was paired with accent pillows of decorated fringe, zig/zag, and circle patterns for added fun. Urban style also involves mixing different types of materials and natural elements like bamboo poles, plants, and iron/stone and wood. This is clearly shown in the living room. Lamps of hammered metal, a marble topped coffee table and end tables complete the look.
master bath
The master bath was totally gutted and then received a new modern treatment. It features clean lines, designer fixtures and sophisticated finishes. New vanities, mirrors, plumbing, lighting, flooring, sunken tub, and a glass enclosed shower all give the master bath a polished urban feel. A dark chocolate color scheme, touches of caramel and beige enhanced by sleek chrome and glass, increase the design drama, while sculptural shapes reduce visual clutter. The floor is covered in neutral stone tile.
Other interesting elements were composed of natural stone mixed with the glass tiles. McGovern said, “A huge trend in baths is the use of glass tiles, in this application they are mosaic. They’re a variety of different colors of small tiles mixed together and made of glass. They add a lot of glimmer for a sleek, sophisticated look.” Wall mounted designer faucets, floating vanities eliminate counter clutter. More glass tile accents repeated in shower and tub surround make up this modern day renovation. The bathroom features maple cabinetry with a dark espresso finish. McGovern said, “Dark cabinetry is one trend that is still very strong but the lighter washed look is also quickly emerging as a contrast. Although traditional design is still very prominent, I keep seeing a lot more simplified designs, some transcending into urban style.” ut

oward Abrams used old fashioned values to build a growing company that has expanded and thrived for the past twenty years, even through difficult times. Starting out doing small home repairs, he says “I figured if they trusted me with small jobs, they’d trust me with bigger projects. I guess that’s something I learned from my grandparents.” Today HMA Construction has several arms to it, and an additional one Abrams would like to get off the ground, but just doesn’t have the time or manpower.

What sets him apart, in addition to his high level of standards (he has earned an A+ rating with both the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List), is his creativity and his sense of integrity for both the project and the customer.
The creativity really comes into play with his basement renovation company, Basement Refacement by HMA Construction. Because of all the inherent obstacles in basements such as plumbing stacks, soffits, sloped floors, support beams and air ducts, having a contractor who specializes in this work is critical. As Abrams puts it “If you were having heart surgery would you choose a general surgeon? No, you’d choose a heart surgeon.” Where a general contractor
receptacles (he’s seen too many fire hazards as a result of extension cords), adding sturdier doorway framing, and putting up carbon monoxide detectors long before they were ever required. Those few extras don’t cost much and the homeowners never see them on the bill, but when the inspectors come by, Abrams says, “They say ‘Wow!’” This reassurance for the customer is invaluable, though certainly it has helped to build the business.
Abrams starts every basement project consulting with the client to discuss the use for the space, the budget, and then he provides them with an entire binder: How to Get Started Planning Your Basement. Abram’s goal is to make your space a luxurious lower level, which is highly individual. He describes it as “a reflection of your personality that has attention to detail and quality craftsmanship.”
Generally with his designs, he crafts the floorplans to complement the clients' personalities. Unlike some other firms, he does not charge for design time. Every once in a while, someone will take his design and go with another company, but he sees that as the cost of doing business. Abrams says “I always look at it as a two-way street. They have to be comfortable with me and I have to be comfortable with them.”
may be able to do an adequate job, Abram’s expertise with lower levels provides him with creative solutions to incorporate those odd nooks and crannies into the design, allowing you to do more with your space and budget. Where others see an obstacle, he may see a spot for an interesting bar.
He’s also a stickler for codes and pulling permits. He knows if the work is not done to code, the city can force you to start from scratch. So next time your husband wants to put up some drywall, you may want to think again. Did he consider fire stops, electrical codes and egress windows? Abrams is a self described “safety-freak” especially having been involved with local fire departments. To that end, he goes beyond building codes to ensure safety, like putting in additional electric
As homeowners look to make the most out of the square footage in their home’s footprint, lower levels have become more prominent and a true extension of living space. In addition, in 2007, Wall Street Journal ranked basements as having the highest return on investment over bathrooms, kitchens, and home offices. And now with the wide variety of uses beyond a simple playroom or extra bedroom— wine cellars, bars, home theaters, safe rooms, fitness rooms, kitchenettes, game rooms, in-law suites —the need for a proper contractor has never been more apparent. Abrams’ clients select him because he takes the time to explain things, he’s extremely clean and thorough, and he does things right. As he succinctly puts it
“I built my company for longevity.” ut

fine antiques
Afew fine antiques such as a pair of 19th century English Regency arm chairs, a vintage crystal chandelier, an antique wood or marble fireplace mantel, a stately country French armoire, decorative porcelain plates and a fine painting or two can lend style and sophistication to any room in your home. New York interior designer, Mario Buatta, known as “The Prince Of Chintz”, has been in business for more than fifty years and is famous for his “undecorated” look. Buatta masterfully mixes antique furnishings with traditional and modern elements to create an unmistakable style that is both luxurious and ultra comfortable. His use of elegant fabrics and trims, combined with the antique furnishings, creates a stately and refined look.

The city blends bustling business districts with an impressive mix of stately single family homes and charming apartments. This unique combination of commercial and residential creates one of the city’s most appealing qualities . . . walkability. Clayton’s 89 award winning restaurants and one million square feet of charming shops and boutiques are within walking distance to those who live and work in Clayton.
Most of these restaurants and retail businesses are independently owned, and customers enjoy a warm rapport with the business owners. Residents as well as visitors to Clayton look forward to combining a shopping excursion with a stop at one of their favorite Clayton restaurants for casual lunch or an elegant dinner with friends.
On Saturday mornings after a workout session or trip to the grocery store, folks gather at coffee shops and cafes to catch up over breakfast, or meander through the Clayton Farmers’ Market to scoop up freshfrom-the-garden, locally grown fruits and vegetables, or browse through the beautifully crafted jewelry and home accessory items.
Switch to the work week, and lunchtime finds Clayton eateries filled with corporate VIPs negotiating deals over sushi or Fettuccine Alfredo, and busy shop owners and office workers making quick stops for a Greek salad or a panini.
With planters brimming with summer blooms, patios fill with dinner guests exploring lists of fine wines and selecting from menus that include French, Asian, Spanish and Italian cuisines. Most of these mouthwatering delights are created by chefs with international training. Alfresco dining abounds. Sidewalks in downtown Clayton and along DeMun and Wydown resemble those in Paris or Florence lined with bistros, coffee shops, and cafes. Clayton has become a dining mecca with international flair.

Marlene Lewis
Marlene Lewis was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She moved to St. Louis in her twenties and began studying at Washington University. This was a life changing experience. Influenced by growing up with three sisters all close in age, as well as having been surrounded by Little Havana and the exuberant Latina Life, Marlene began painting the figure. Movement, energy, and color became the focus of her painting. Life became the subject of her canvases, whether it be brightly costumed women, flowers or abstractions of those subjects.
Recent exhibitions of her work have included Rossetti Fine Art Gallery, Linda White Gallery, Grafica Fine Art Gallery, Art and Air in Webster Groves, Old Orchard Gallery, The St. Louis Glass Factory, and Concrete Ocean Gallery. Marlene's award winning art is shown in Boca Raton, Florida and locally at Grafica Gallery.
artist's statemeNt:
I feel so lucky to be alive and I try to express that in my painting. I paint by feeling, because that's what I experience when I pick up a paint brush. Color and energy... It's amazing what brings a painting to life. Sometimes, it's simply a dark line or fascinating shape. So much of life is incomprehensible. To me, painting is a lot like that. It's as much an unconscious process as it is conscious and I am always fascinated at what emerges on the canvas.
For several years, I've been working on a series of dancers in oil, acrylic and metallic paint, as well as abstract drawings with ink and watercolor. The spontaneity and vibrant color of ink is exhilarating and I love the energy of drawing from life. I've also been working on a series of paintings for a company that deals with issues involved in organ transplantation. I've been painting a series of hearts and butterflies which symbolizes the hope for those people receiving a second chance at life and the gifts that have been given by the donor families.
These paintings have inspired a new series of mixed media paintings of animals. I love animals and its so much fun incorporating them into my art.

I really think a brain scan of my head would reveal that it is basically empty except for a softball sized visual cortex that leaves no space for memory of car keys laid, or why I just came into this room. As a kid, people called me an artist, but I think we artisans know we simply are compelled to draw and paint, and by sheer practice a strong cord fastens between eye, brain, and hand. Two years at the University of New Mexico led to a BFA in 1983 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and I've been wiggling a paintbrush professionally everyday ever since. Those early southern California days were filled with storyboards, advertising, and movie poster comps, all created the old fashioned way, acrylic paint on illustration board. Returning to my native St Louis years later, the Missouri landscape seemed beautiful and brand new to me. So, while still working full time as a freelance illustrator, I began painting scenes of woods and rivers for myself.
These days painting entirely on canvas, corporate and private commissions have taken the place of my illustration assignments. Some recent pieces are a fifteen by twenty-seven foot mural for the Museum of Westward Expansion under the Arch, and a forty by eighty inch painting commissioned to commemorate forty years of service by Dr. Peter Raven, now in the permanent collection of the Missouri Botanical Garden. But the largest and most challenging commission to date stretches the bounds of my small at-home studio with it's seven and a half foot ceiling, and perhaps my imagination.
Bryan’s newest works will be the feature of a upcoming exhibition at Kodner Gallery entitled Narrative Landscapes: New Works by Bryan Haynes The exhibition opens October 5th with a cocktail reception with the artist, which is free and open to the public. A portion of the proceeds from artworks sold will benefit the Kodner Gallery Art Therapy Program at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Specialty Hospital. Please contact Kodner Gallery (9650 Clayton Road in Ladue, 314-993-4477) for more information. ut

Carmen Loera
Carmen Loera was born and raised in St. Louis She began sketching at the young age of seven and continued to expand her appreciation of art. When Carmen was twenty-one, she moved to Los Angeles. Carmen spent twenty years in Los Angeles. She continued to paint, but her career took a different path and she pursued the art of make up. For twenty years, Carmen worked as a make up artist and her assignments included working on numerous films and runway fashion shows. She recently returned to St. Louis to pursue her art career.
Carmen’s passion for art was encouraged by friends and mentors Richard Weisman and Douglas Simon. Carmen has traveled extensively to Europe and although she didn’t attend art school, she has studied art in Paris, London, Amstersdam and Belgium.
Further influences on Carmen’s art career were Modigliani, the later works of Matisse, long drives down the Pacific Coast highway, Jasper Johns number 5 painting, Luc Besson, The professional, and music videos too numerous to count.
Carmen is always enthusiastic when she talks about her unique style of abstract art and she has a real passion for the pursuit of fine art. She says, “My style of painting is abstract expressionist. My first painting ‘In The Red Ocean’, represents my vision of tranquility and solitude. My second work, ‘Queen Of Mekong’, exemplifies the lusts and wants of an old love. My third work ‘Starlight Star Bright’ exemplifies my feelings of happiness and love.”
Everyone has a role model during their life and Carmen’s role model is singing legend, Madonna. Carmen explains, “Madonna has had a tremendous influence on me and she has been a real inspiration in my life. I look up to her as my childhood role model. Madonna’s accomplishments as an international performer serves as an inspiration to women all over the globe.”
It's so much fun incorporating them into my art.

Passion is what drives my creative work. You see it in the bright, bold colors that dominate my paintings and in the textured layers of paint I apply with my palette knife. That passion is subtle when I create semi abstract artwork. In the more sensual pieces that I'm best known for there is nothing subtle about it. They are a celebration. An attempt to capture the allure of the female form and ultimately passion itself.
Celebrity Chef Hubert Keller is one of my most famous clients. My paintings are in his restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas as well as in his homes. Many in St.Louis know my work from his restaurant and ultra lounge SLeeK that was in Lumiere Casino.
My artwork is in the many private collections of individuals and businesses across the U.S. and internationally. I have recently started creating large colorful abstract paintings for corporate spaces and lobbies.
Painting live is my specialty. Chef Hubert Keller flew me to Las Vegas to create artwork for his restaurant Fleur during Vegas Uncork'd and a second time to create a 20 foot long painting for the main dinning room. I was even flown to Miami to paint live for a wedding on the beach! Here in St.Louis I am often invited to paint live for private parties, openings, fashion shows and charity events.
I welcome commissions and the opportunity to create unique original paintings that combine a clients needs with my artistic passion for color and texture.
I invite you to see my paintings in person at the following locations:

Did you know that 50% of Americans drink three or four cups of coffee every day? That’s about 330,000,000 cups of coffee a day. Get your day off to a strong start at City Coffee House & Creperie, Northwest Coffee and Stone Spiral Coffee & Curios.
Clayton’s City Coffee House & Creperie opened in 1995. Ray Gallardo was already well known for a line of successful St. Louis restaurants and assisted his wife in opening a new venture-a coffee house. So they traveled to Seattle, home of Seattle’s Best and Starbuck’s for research. They were also inspired on a trip to France where they enjoyed crepes served on a sidewalk cafe. The Gallardo’s decided that their new establishment needed to be more than just a coffee house. It would also serve authentic French crepes. Viola! The original City House Coffee & Creperie was born!
Plenty of French ambience invites customers- large windows, high ceilings, stone flooring, oversized posters and intimate tables all add to the French theme. Menus are displayed on a charming and colorful chalkboard.
Customers place orders at the counter, and are then given an “Eiffel Tower” number holder so that food orders may be brought to tables. A window-walled enclosure provides customers year round seating, reducing any wait times. But any wait is definitely worthwhile. This restaurant serves traditional crepes, created right behind the counter so customers can actually watch these luscious treats being prepared. They are savory or sweetstuffed with enticing fresh combinations for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dessert. Over
forty different crepes are offered, from French style to St. Louis inspired delights. Their very thin pancakes are made with white or 100% organic buckwheat flour. They are filled with eggs, bacon or ham & swiss for breakfast.
For lunch, try honey ham, fresh asparagus spears, fresh spinach and Havarti cheese with hollandaise sauce. For dessert, try them filled with Gnutellla chocolate and fresh strawberries, banana and pecans. Ooh, la, la! Other menu goodies include homemade pastries, quiches, sandwiches, soups, salads, rich coffees, espressos, teas and smoothies.
Coffee of the day are staple delights, and an Italian-made espresso machine keeps cups filled with aromatic brews. Other drinks, like Alpaccino (frozen mocha), fresh fruit smoothies, freshly squeezed orange juice and raspberry lemonades are also very popular. Come enjoy a bit of Paris at St. Louis’ original Creperie. C’est si bon! ut

Northwest Coffee
Roasting is dedicated to making the best tasting coffee in the world.
Besides operating several coffee shops, Northwest Coffee is a local microroaster, serving coffeehouses, restaurants, and office in St. Louis area. “We sell freshly roasted coffee by the pound, and in our brewed coffee drinks,” said owner Rick Milton.
were trained to roast coffee by a roaster in Seattle. He taught us how to optimize coffee flavor,” said Milton.
Milton explained further, “We tried to figure out how to brew a good cup of coffee, and then we hit upon the perfect tasting formula. We haven’t varied from this for 19 years. Since then we’ve learned a lot about the science of brewing a great cup of coffee.”
northwest coffee
A fixture in Clayton since 1992, the store was previously next to Wild Oats for 12 years and in its current location for 7 years.
Milton and his wife Catherine just loved coffee, and know how good coffee should taste. They actually studied the art of brewing. “We
Northwest Coffee prides itself on obtaining raw coffee beans from the best distributors, focusing on beans grown with minimal use of artificial pesticides or fertilizers.
Milton describes the procedure for the freshest coffee in town, “We roast on site at our Central West End store, using a 1957 German Probat coffee bean roaster. These vintage roasters are coveted in the industry for their ability to allow a roaster to hit the perfect roast. Coffee roasts from the inside out.
At about 9 minutes into the process, a fire inside the bean starts. The fats and the sugars begin to carmelize. This is what creates the flavor that we call coffee.”
Coffee is king at Northwest Coffee, but there’s also tea, pastries, donuts and eggs. “Our specialty item is our Barista Eggs. We steam eggs on a delicate eggspresso machine. Scrambled eggs come out very light and fluffy. We serve them as sandwiches and other ways. People absolutely love them,” said Milton.
Yes, Northwest Coffee is all about the art of coffee making, but it offers another kind of art too. “We have shows inside the store, and the art sells very well.” ut

Opened May 2008, Stone Spiral Coffee & Curios has swiftly become the favorite hangout for coffee connoisseurs, poets, writers and anyone who enjoys a great beverage in an inspiring space. Its name is derived from the large stone spiral in the patio area, created by owner/artist Doug Kassabaum. Kassabaum displays his metal sculptures inside the shop, and encourages other artist to do likewise. Thus the interior is filled with an eclectic mix of local art.
Stone Spiral in situated in Maplewood’s Ryan Hummer Park neighborhood. The interior is spacious with natural light, and offers ample space for business meetings and groups. Manager Grace Wilson said “ We can accommodate catered private parties up to 40 people.” It’s also a good place to study with free wireless internet and plenty of electrical outlets for charging up
The menu includes teas, seasonal beverages and of course the best brewed coffee in Maplewood! In addition to flatbread pizzas and other fresh baked goods, Stone Spiral recently added a weekend brunch and daily earlybird specials ( “ eggy “ sandwiches, breakfast burritos ).
Reminiscent of 1950 era coffeehouses, evenings are open for music and poetry. Stone Spiral is a favorite among local musicians, poets and other artists. An eclectic mix of jazz, blues, folk and pop is featured almost every night…. free of charge! Perhaps the high decorative tin ceiling and ceramic
floor help generate great acoustics. Artists just love performing here. Beer and wine are served during these live performances. Wednesday is open Mic Night ( music, poetry, comedy ).
The Curios side includes an area where t-shirts, jewelry, cards and other hand made items by local artisans are on sale. And then there are the rocks ( another element in the name Stone Spiral ). Visitors are welcome to view Kassabaum’s unique and beautiful agate collection.
Stone Spiral Coffee & Curios is a home away from home. Shelves are filled with donated books which you are welcome to borrow or keep. So curl up with a book from this free community book collective and a cup of fresh java!
Everyone is welcome. ut

As I write this, it’s a balmy 104 degrees outside so the thought of fall leaves and sweaters is a little hard to get on board with but these new, locally owned companies will warm your stomach, your soul, and your style, no matter what the temperature.
Home grown K. Hall, (26B Maryland Plaza, CWE, 314961-1990, khalldesigns. com) purveyor of fine candles, scents, soaps and more, is expanding their retail presence on a sort of trial basis. Now open in the peripatetic CWE neighborhood, spokesman Scott Miller says this new spot provides them the opportunity to “experiment a little more where people are wandering by” versus a destination shopping location like they have on Manchester Avenue. Working with a short term lease through the end of November that they will extend if all goes well, they can test market the presence before looking into other potential locations like SOHO, Ann Arbor, and Madison, Wisconsin. This alternative to their production and retail space in Brentwood allows them to offer their full line of products complemented by clothing and accessories. Their
wholesale presence extends around the world from New Zealand to Venezuela and is available in stores like Anthropologie, Whole Foods, and Harrods of London. The CWE location is open Mon - Sat 11 - 7, Sun 12 - 5.
Five star Burgers, (8125 Maryland Ave, Clayton, 5starburgers.com) comes to us via Steve Gontram (former Harvest owner) whose father Bob opened the restaurant in New Mexico and earned the title of one of the "50 Best Burgers in the U.S." by USA Today last year. The gourmet burgers are eight ounces of all natural, hormone and antibiotic free Black Angus, hand pattied, and grilled to temperature. Fear not, nonbeef eaters, they also offer turkey, lamb, crab, bison and veggie burgers along with salads and sandwiches. Topped with a variety of delicacies like cranberry chutney and green chile mayo, or served straight up, it’s no wonder these are some of the best in the land. They also have a kids’ menu for them, a full bar for me, and high-quality milkshakes for the hubby making this a perfect family night out.
toulon Boutique (102 W. Lockwood, Webster Groves, 314-9181008), takes its name after a small, French port city known for its sense of fun and affordability. The former home of Jennie Annie’s, offers a wide selection of clothing and accessories in sizes from XS to XL including St. Louis’ own Before and Again line. They feature a couple moderately priced workout lines, Omala and Twist, that are perfect for your gym to grocery store days. Their Oofos line of shoes is named such because when you put a pair on, you go ‘Ooooh” - they’re that comfortable.
Accessories include Jenny Krauss hand woven and embroidered Peruvian belts, bags and purses, and Monarch jewelry. Monarch is a local group dedicated to stopping sex trafficking in the St. Louis area (see monarchjewelry.org). All proceeds from the sale of the jewelry go to support the cause. Owner Julie Mangels has received several comments from customers who repeatedly tell her how pleased they are to have a boutique with affordable prices. Open M - F 10 - 5:30, Sat 10 - 4:30
We’re so fortunate to have such high-quality, locally owned companies that help our economy and our community. Our job now is to get out there and support them. ut
