Vintage estate jewelry and antique estate jewelry, particularly diamond and platinum estate jewelry, has become one of the most sought-after types of fine jewelry and one of the most valuable types of jewelry. If you’re wondering where you can purchase estate jewelry, there are numerous sources.

UPTOWN recently asked Dr. Boswell about various procedures for enhancing the beauty of face, neck and décolleté.

Q What can improve the appearance of eyes?

A When the eye opening becomes smaller it gives the appearance of being more tired or angry. This can be due to excess skin of the upper eyelids or it can be due to ptosis (drooping) of the eyebrow. A blepharoplasty, also known as an “eyelid lift” will remove the extra skin of the upper eyelids and give a more refreshed and alert appearance. A browlift will elevate the eyebrow and this will help open up the eyes and relieve that tired look.

Q What is Latisse and how does it affect lash growth.

A Latisse is the first and only FDA approved ophthalmic prescription used to grow eyelashes and eyebrows, making them longer, thicker, and darker. It works by keeping the hair follicles in the growth phase for a longer period of time. The solution is applied to the base of eyelashes or eyebrows on a daily basis. Most people see improvement within 2 months, but it takes 4 months to see your maximal improvement.

Q Can facials alone improve complexion?

A Facials improve skin texture allowing smoother application of makeup and improved penetration of skin care products. Facial usually are not deep enough to improve fine lines or hyperpigmentation (dark spots).

Q What are the different advantages between skin resurfacing procedures –dermabrasion, chemical peels and lasers?

A All resurfacing procedures are similar in that they remove the outer layers of the skin, bringing fresh skin cells to the surface, minimizing wrinkles and giving skin a more youthful appearance. Dermabrasion uses mechanical abrasion to remove the outer skin cells, chemical peels use an acid to “melt away” the outer skin cells, and the laser uses heat energy to “vaporize” the skin cells. The deeper the treatment penetrates, the greater the results in terms of wrinkle reduction, evening of skin tone and improvement of

texture. Also the deeper or more intense the treatment, the longer a patient’s recovery will be.

Microdermabrasion uses a pressurized stream of fine crystals to loosen the skin’s top layer of dead skin cells. It immediately makes the skin feel smoother and look healthier. It is especially effective for unclogging pores and smoothing out rough textures. It may have some effect on shrinking the pore’s size. This treatment takes less than an hour and produces immediate results and doesn’t have any significant down time.

Chemical micro-peels usually contain prescriptionstrength natural alpha-hydroxy-acids which exfoliate the skin. These peels tend to be more effective on patients with oily skin types by removing the debris that clogs pores and by helping to exfoliate the epidermis. These don’t have any

significant downtime for recovery and improved skin texture is evident immediately.

Medium depth peels, such as, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA peels) are deeper peels that penetrate down into the dermis. These peels can help with fine to moderate lines, decrease hyperpigmentation and improve texture. These peels do have downtime associated with them and patients need place an ointment like aquaphor on their face for 3-4 days after the treatment. The deeper the peel, the greater the result, but the longer the downtime a patient will have.

A MicroLaserPeel uses an erbium or carbon dioxide laser that penetrates deeper into the dermal layers of the skin and is similar to the deeper chemical peels in that the deeper the laser peel, the greater the results. It is effective for treating fine to moderate wrinkles, scars, and age spots, and texture.

Clear + Brilliant is a fractionated laser treatment, meaning that it affects about 10% of the total surface area that is treated. This means there is less downtime (patients usually look like they have a sunburn for 6 hours and can go to work the next day), but they need 4-6 treatments to see the optimal results. It is clinically proven to fight the effects of aging skin by smoothing texture, reducing pore size and improving hyperpigmentation (even skin tone).

Q What is the difference between Botox and Juvederm, and what areas do they affect?

A Botox relaxes muscles and reduces facial lines in the forehead and around the eyes. When these muscles stay relaxed, crow's feet (or smile lines), vertical lines between the eye brows (frown lines), and forehead lines smooth out. Improvement occurs in about a week, and full effectiveness takes two weeks. It lasts for approximately four months.

Juvederm is a tissue filler for deeper lines. Areas of the face that benefit from filler injections include lip augmentation, cheeks, the fold between the nose and corners of the mouth, marionette lines from the corners of the mouth, frown

lines, and some recessed acne scars. The process takes 15 to 30 minutes. Results are immediate and last up to a year. Patients will have some bruising that requires coverage 10-20% of the time, so we like to schedule fillers when you don’t have an important event coming up in the next couple of days.

Q How does Botox help with excessive perspiration?

A Botox is effective in treating hyperhidrosis, or excessive perspiration. Sweating of the forehead, armpits, palms of hands, or soles of feet is a common problem. Botox injections stop the sweating. The armpits are the most commonly treated area. Depending on units used in treatment, Botox reduces perspiration for approximately six months to 1 ½ years.

Q Are these procedures safe?

A Every procedure carries risks – safety depends on skill of the doctor. Side effects of Botox are redness and swelling for about 30 minutes, occasional headache or GI upset, and drooping of the eyelids in about 1% of patients. The most common side effects of fillers are bruising and swelling. Other possible risks of fillers include over-correction of an area, too superficial correction of an area which creates lines and bumps, and vascular compromise.

Q What are chances of bruising after treatments?

A With Botox the bruising is fairly minimal and easy to cover up with makeup. If someone has bruising, it is usually at the lateral corner of the eye from injecting the crow’s feet. With fillers, the greater the amount of product injected, the greater the risk for bruising. Probably 10-20% of patients

will have some bruising that can last up to a week. Significant bruising is difficult to cover with makeup, so I always advise patients to plan procedures around social activities.

Q What procedures can be done to improve appearance of neck and décolleté?

A For younger people with excess fat below the chin and good skin elasticity, liposuction may be sufficient for improvement. Older patients may have loose neck skin and a neck lift is the best way to remove the loose skin and recreate the angle under the chin. Botox can be used to decrease the “platysmal bands” which are the vertical bands underneath neck that can be confused with loose skin. Hyperpigmentation, or age spots, can be improved with “medical grade” skin care or light based therapies like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL or BBL) or the Clear and Brilliant Laser. By “medical grade” skin care, I mean using ingredients that require a prescription, such as, Retin-A, hydroquinone, a topical 10-20% Vitamin C serum, and an alpha-hydroxyacid of at least 8-12% strength.

Q When would you recommend Face Lift, Eye Lift, Rhinoplasty (nose surgery), or Chin Implant?

A Of course, that depends on each patient. There are three groups of patients. Those patients who opt for a nonsurgical approach utilizing skin care, injectables, and lasers/ chemical peels. Then there are those patients who want a surgical approach that requires no ongoing maintenance. Maximum improvement comes from a combination of surgical and non-surgical treatments. UT

Clayton:

100 YEARS OF INCORPORATION

The City of Clayton is in the middle of celebrating 100 years of incorporation. The people who pushed for incorporation back in 1913 could not have foreseen that their rural outpost of small frame buildings and plank sidewalks would later become a metropolitan hub with stately neighborhoods and award-winning parks.

Since its beginning as the seat of St. Louis County Government, Clayton has experienced a long, steady and prosperous growth. Over time, it has become a vibrant center of business activity and a recognized civic leader in the St. Louis region.

While preparing for the centennial, planners realized that the celebration needed a civic purpose that would provide an opportunity for the community to coalesce around the magical and essential components of Clayton: stately neighborhoods, award winning educational institutions, world-class businesses, and outstanding parks and public art. They understood they had a responsibility to create a milestone year that would recognize the city’s rich history, and at the same time, live up to its premier status as a regional leader.

Leading up to the centennial year, the planners worked with author Mary Leonard to compile a book about the city’s history. Clayton, Missouri:

An Urban Story tells how Clayton progressed from a rural outpost to a metropolitan hub. The book recognizes Clayton’s historic neighborhoods as a vital component of the community, while moving forward with twenty-first century priorities. Examples of this dual commitment include:

• Wydown Boulevard, once a major streetcar route to dignified neighborhoods, evolved into a key path for motorists who share the road with walkers, joggers, and bikers.

• The Heritage Building at 10 South Brentwood was recently transformed to house the Clayton Police Department and Municipal Courts. While featuring the original terrazzo floor, walnut paneling and brass fixtures, the building now exemplifies Clayton’s leadership in environmental and energy standards.

• The Historic Hanley House, built by Martin Franklin Hanley in 1855, is the oldest structure in the City of Clayton and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was restored and is now a historic house museum filled with original family furnishings, artifacts, and letters that represent an honest portrayal of 19th century Missouri life.

The city received proclamations recognizing the centennial from a number of political dignitaries including: Senator Claire McCaskill, Congressman Lacy Clay, Governor Jay Nixon, Missouri Municipal League president Dan Ross, St. Louis County Municipal League president Thomas Schneider and Richmond Heights Mayor James Beck. The National Register of Historic Places also sent an acknowledgement.

Commemoration of Clayton’s centennial has included a year-long calendar of exciting events.

Early this year, Clayton school students were asked, “What Will Clayton Look Like in 100 Years?”

Through essay, art or video, students of all grade levels were recognized for their imaginative visions of the future Clayton.

A speaker series sponsored by the Clayton Century Foundation (CCF) featured presentations about aspects of Clayton’s history. They included: A Sense of Time and Place: the importance of neighborhoods and building community; The 1904 World’s Fair, Clayton and

Washington University; the History of Wilson Schooland Neighborhoods along Wydown Boulevard; and How Wydown Became a Great Street and the History of the St. Louis Country Club.

In August, the city added to its world-class public art collection with the dedication of the 19 foot stainless steel and bronze sculpture by the nationally-recognized artist James Surls. Molecular Bloom with Single Flower was commissioned as a permanent installation for Century Garden in Clayton’s Shaw Park. Starting in October, the public is invited to a variety of events including:

• The Centennial Festival on October 5

• The last of the 2013 CCF Speaker Series on November 6

• The Party of the Century on November 29

• All That Glitters festivities on December 6

Polish native Irek T. Szelag, has been painting for more than 30 years. After a one-year stint in Italy in 1987, studying techniques of old masters in Rome’s galleries and museums, he found his way to St. Louis, where he has worked with well-known local artists and developed his own style. Szelag still travels throughout Europe for inspiration and has created many works that are now in private collections throughout the Midwest.

Works by Irek Szelag will be on display at Kodner Gallery, 9650 Clayton Road in Ladue from September 14th-October 12th as part of the 2013 Missouri Masters Series. A portion of the proceeds from artworks sold will benefit Love U 2 Pieces, Supporting Families Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

One of the most frequent questions asked (sometimes with an element of panic and stress) is “Where should we go for our perfect beach vacation or honeymoon?” Choosing your ideal location can actually be decided with more ease than you might imagine!

The popular destination choices are Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Cancun and the Riviera Mayan coast because of the nonstop direct charters. If you would like a bit more exclusive, you can go to the U. S. and British Virgin Islands. If your dream is an exotic island with a great beach where you can escape and relax, look at the more remote Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean!

The two island groups are in the North Atlantic Ocean about 620

miles from Miami and southeast of the Bahamas. Temperatures run in the low mid 80’s during the day and 70’s at night all year round with November and December being the rainiest. Don’t worry because the Turks Caicos islands have 350 days of sunshine a year! Other great selling points are that the currency is US dollars, the electricity is US 110 volt/60 cycle, the time is US Eastern Standard Time and English is the official language.

Providenciales (commonly called “Provo”) is the third largest island but has the largest population and has the international airport. An alluring fact is that the Turks and Caicos is a fairly new destination. It wasn’t until 1964 that the island had a car and it

wasn’t until 1984 that Club Med opened their resort/casino.

Most of the resorts are on the 12 mile Grace Bay on the northern side of the island. To the south is Chalk Sound, Sapodilla Bay, Copper Jack, Discovery Bay, Turtle Tail and Long Bay.

The private and exclusive Amanyara Resort, the Grace Bay Club with the Anacoana, a gorgeous gourmet oceanfront restaurant and the Tuscany Resort are just a few of the luxury hotels available. There are really only two all-inclusive properties. “Beaches” the family friendly resort has a giant waterpark, activities for children of any age with Sesame Street® characters, the new Xbox 360® Game Garage and a great teen disco. The other all-inclusive is the aforementioned Club Med. Some resorts offer packages that come very close to all-inclusive but be careful to check out exactly what is included, such as water activities, all meals or just breakfast and/or lunch, drinks, etc. Noninclusive resorts and hotels are many and range from moderate to luxury. Comfort Suites even has a presence on Provo. Condominiums, villas and cottages are also available.

A great example of an elegant, chic resort and spa is the Seven Stars. This stunning luxury resort on Grace Bay was voted “Favorite Caribbean Hotel” by Trip Advisors Readers Choice Awards and one of the top 10 Caribbean Resorts by Conde Nast 2012. If you are planning a destination wedding, Seven Stars provides a complimentary wedding coordinator who will help you with your plans every step down the aisle! Guests can enjoy certain free sports on land and sea, including tennis, sailing and snorkeling. The Provo Golf Club is only two minutes away with transportation by a complimentary private car.

If swimming and sunning on the beautiful beach aren’t enough and you would like to enjoy other activities, the islands offer horseback riding, sailboat charters, snorkeling the reefs, swimming with dolphins, diving, parasailing, jet skiing, lobster hunting and fishing.

If time permits, take a day trip to one or two of the other islands. Activities usually cost less outside of Provo and you will get more for your money when hiring boats and services on the other islands. Do remember however that restaurants and stores can be few and far between when on one of the outer islands.. Also, always check the times when taking ferries from one island to another. Being stranded with no accommodations on the wrong island can be avoided if you make a point of knowing when the last ferry for the day departs!

Getting around is easy. The island is only about 6 or 7 miles wide. The Gecko bus is the public transportation and runs every 30 minutes. Car rental places are available and you can always rent a scooter. Depending on where you stay, most shops are within walking distance. You can buy food at the local IGA but be prepared as food costs a bit more than here in the States.

For something different, visit the Conch Farm where you can see how the conch grow and are harvested. Take a sunset cruise and see the glowworms. The timing has to be right. Three to six nights after the full moon, about one hour after sunset, for 15 minutes, the glowworms mate. Bad for the male as he sinks to the bottom of the sea and dies but great for sightseers who say that the watching the ceremony is like looking at stars in the sea.

The rich and famous are known to stay at the Turks and Caicos Islands and you can too. As always, I suggest that you call your favorite travel agent who can help you prepare and give you valuable insights the right place to stay, things to see and do and the easiest way to get to these heavenly unique, enticing and seductive islands of the Turks and Caicos. its opening on April 15, 2013, The Wheelhouse has already become well known as the late night destination in Clayton. It’s a high energy sports bar and restaurant featuring crafted food and drinks.

Co-owners Stephen Savage, Jared Ater, and Lou Groff had previously managed another venue in Columbia, MO. The trio worked together for four years, and between them have over 22 years of restaurant experience. All three are serious hands-on operating owners. Savage noted, “We have split responsibilities managing The Wheelhouse. We’re always there.”

Savage explained the restaurant’s clever name, “The Wheelhouse is from an old boating term ‘That's in my wheelhouse.’ It was where the captain steered the ship - his domain of expertise. Later it became a baseball term ‘That pitch was in Stan Musial's Wheelhouse’. This restaurant is our wheelhouse. We're not bankers or lawyers who just decided to open a cool restaurant and bar, rather, this is what we do. This is our first time as owners, and it’s our original concept.”

The Wheelhouse boasts an astonishing number of TVs –33 of them! This fact enables diners a clear view of any sports game that’s on, including the NFL Sunday Ticket.

St. Louis native Savage explained why The Wheelhouse is much more than a sports bar, “We cater to everything from private happy hour parties to wedding rehearsals, high school reunions, and private business lunches. We have a portion of the building which we can make fully private. This room with a built in bar also offers a DJ booth with live music capabilities. We specialize in high volume events.”

The restaurant’s highly social atmosphere attracts people who love fun, excitement, and above all incredible dining. The lunch and dinner menus list many varied and delicious sounding possibilities. Classic salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps, appetizers and entrees all offered at moderate prices. The as close to scratch as possible fare includes specialties like ground in-house burgers and even the iconic Philly Whiz Wit steak sandwich (shaved top round on steamed hoagie bun with smoked jalapeño cheese and onions). There’s something about fall, the leaves changing color, dropping and blanketing the earth that puts a chill in my bones. I pull out my sweats and find myself snuggling up on the sofa with a hot cup of tea.

When it comes time for dinner though its comfort food I’m craving, but not the unwanted extra pounds that comes with it.

If you’re like me, I’ve always been a fan of pasta but it’s not always the best thing for my waistline. What if you could satisfy your craving without loading up on so many carbs? Well you can!

If you love veggies, consider substituting the pasta for a vegetable like I did, in this Towering Eggplant Lasagna with Fresh Mozzarella. Not only does it satisfy your craving but it nourishes your body.

Plus, try serving this to your guests and listen to the rave reviews you get. Whether you create a tower, or thinly slice your vegetable of choice, layering it in your casserole dish, it’s sure to please.

With just a few simple ingredients and minimal prep time, you can create this stunning dish. Here’s how….

1 – 28 oz. can imported Italian tomatoes (San Marzano)

3 fresh basil leaves, torn in pieces

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

EGGPLANT LASAGNA:

1 pound of Eggplant

Salt

2 cups Marinara sauce

8 slices Fresh Mozzarella cheese

1 cup Fresh Ricotta cheese

2 Tbsp. shredded Parmesan cheese

Fresh Basil, chopped

(For cheeses, I used BelGioioso brand)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Marinara Sauce: Mince the garlic and cover the bottom of a large kettle with olive oil. Sauté the garlic in the olive oil until it is almost ready to brown, about 2 minutes. Add the can of tomatoes, basil, black and red pepper. Bring to a boil, then turn down and simmer sauce for about an hour - until tomatoes are broken down. Use a wooden spoon to help break down the tomatoes while simmering.

2. Eggplant Lasagna: Slice eggplant, ¼ - inch thick, salt, and set out for one hour to draw out the water. Pat dry.

3. Heat a non-stick grill pan or use a grill to cook each slice of eggplant until browned on each side.

4. For each “lasagna” stack, spread 1 grilled eggplant slice with marinara sauce and top with a slice of Fresh Mozzarella. Add another eggplant slice, and top with Fresh Ricotta cheese, marinara sauce, fresh basil leaves and another eggplant slice. Garnish with marinara sauce, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, then broil to heat and melt cheeses.

Note: To insure eggplant is grilled to perfection, place slices on grate for approximately 3-5 minutes per side, leaving nice grill marks. Once removed from the grill, wrap in foil allowing to rest 5-7 minutes. They’ll continue to cook slightly, getting softer inside (not gushy) while tender on the outside.

he is both a songstress and songwriter. Her angelic smile and voice have won fans everywhere she performs. Being drop dead gorgeous doesn’t hurt either. She is St. Louis’ own Erin Bode.

She was born in Wayzata, Minnesota, the youngest of four children in a musical family. This angel of music began as a cherub!

Her father, a Lutheran minister, encouraged his talented five year old to join the church's cherub choir, thus beginning Bode’s intense love of everything musical. Bode said, “I always enjoyed expressing myself through music and felt from the start this was what I wanted to do.”

Ten years later, her family moved to St. Louis where she attended Lutheran High South and later graduated from Eureka High School. Bode studied classical music for two years at the University of Minnesota (“All of my family went there.”) before transferring to Webster University. One teacher was noted pianist and singer Christine Hitt who introduced Bode to jazz. Bode remembers, “Christine opened my eyes and instructed me as to what music can be when you make it your own, from your heart.” While at Webster, Bode performed with the Vocal Jazz Ensemble later graduating with a dual degree in vocal performance and foreign languages.

Bode’s beautiful voice has a soft and haunting quality, similar in style to one of her favorite singers, Blossom Dearie. “Blossom had a unique girlish sound, and preferred singing unfamiliar songs,” said Bode. Another powerful influence on Bode was the late singer Eva Cassidy. Bode’s repertoire includes a variety of music. A typical performance may mix jazz, popular standards, folk, her original compositions, and perhaps a bit of Brazilian beat.

Her professional career began with the recording of a self-produced CD Requests in 2001. It included her popular rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” The growth in public attention led to a contract with St. Louis’ MAXJAZZ in 2004, when her “Don't Take Your Time.” was released. Bode’s 2006 album “Over and Over” reached seventeenth on Billboard’s chart for top jazz albums. More national exposure came with appearances on Fox & Friends and the CBS Saturday Early Show. She later sang on NPR’s popular radio program, Prairie Home Companion, broadcast live from the Fox Theater. Later recordings include "The Little Garden", "A Cold December Night" in 2008 and

"Photograph" in 2010.

The Erin Bode Group first formed during her time at Webster. The band has been together about ten years and consists of pianist/guitarist Adam Maness, and Bode’s husband, bassist Syd Rodway. “I’m very grateful to my band mates. We’re constantly evolving and coming up with new ideas.” Maness is co-lyricist with Bode, creating her moving and clever songs. “Sharing the music we love with our audiences is priceless.”

One of her most inspiring projects was composing and performing a song using a child’s actual heartbeat. The three minute "The Space Between," tells the story of 10-year-old Katelyn Jackson who underwent six heart surgeries at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Bode returned to her roots with her latest recording “Be Still My Soul.” She explained, “Sometimes, we play at Lutheran and other church events. The audiences have liked our hymn arrangements so much that they encouraged us to make a recording." The new CD was recorded at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Des Peres.

Bode has performed locally and across the country. St. Louis venues include Jazz at the Bistro, The Cheshire Inn, The Tenderloin Room, The Sheldon, Cyrano’s and numerous community concerts. That being said there are some things you just don’t want to skimp on. Jeans, bras and bathing suits - aren’t those the hardest things to shop for? Well cross one of those off your list. Check out Tripel Brasserie (1801 Park Avenue, Lafayette Square, 314-678-7787, tripelstl.com) for a genuine European, Belgian to be more precise, experience. All selfrespecting beer drinkers know that each beer should be served in its own, unique glass. Tripel, also the name of a particular style of beer originated by Trappist Monks centuries ago, brings that Belgian authenticity to light surpassed only by their food menu. I’ve spent a fair amount of time in Belgium and France, and to the best of my suspect recollection, this feels as close as you can get without jumping the pond. Flemish stew (aka Stoofvlees), classic Moules (mussels) served six different ways, and Escargots are just a few examples of traditional pub fare. For those of you less pub-enamored there are also wines by the glass and bottle, cocktails and French cuisine including Fruits for Mer, (fruit of the sea - or fish) which changes daily, Filet Mignon, or for the adventurous, Antelope. The rave reviews will keep this restaurant around for a long time. The only downsideI won’t have to go back to Belgium for my Delerium (oh, those pink elephants!) and Kippenwaterzooi, just to Lafayette Park. UT
