Polish of E/I/Reemigrants

When people migrate not only does their life change but also the status, shape and content of their mother tongue (L1). Emigration causes that migrants’ L1 undergoes modifications, suffers attrition or even loss. Reemigration fosters the return to the previous status whereas immigration – forces them to learn a new code. Living in a different country is an excellent chance for migrants to become bilingual which few of them take advantage of. They most often become users of two languages which they know at different proficiency levels. The article looks into this phenomenon and analyzes L1 status changes which result from e/i/reemigration. Those changes rarely noticed by adults are very difficult for children.

Reading Speed of Polish and Non-Polish Language Users. Comparative Study

The paper explores the issue of reading speed of Polish language users. As the topic tends to be overlooked in the literature, the main goal of the research was to determine how fast native speakers of Polish can read and how their speed of reading relates to that of non-native, highly advanced language users. The article presents the study among students of Polish as a foreign language in the School of Polish Language and Culture on Jagiellonian University and Erasmus+ program and Polish native speakers – students at the same university. The results of the study show that with a similar score of comprehension test the ratio of reading speed in case of foreigners was two times slower for C1 groups and 1,5 times slower for the most advanced group.

Encounters with the Polish Culture for Pupils Returning from Emigration

In the Polish school there are more and more children with migration background, including those coming back from emigration. These pupils require special competences and support of teachers, especially as far as language and culture issues are concerned. The aim of the article is to show the need for cultural education within extra classes of Polish for returning pupils. The text also presents an approach to such education, as well as example exercises that might be used during the individual lessons covering language and cultural issues.
