Abstract The progress of the participants in the Teaching English in Poland (TEIP) program — as in any learning process — is subject to evaluation. This evaluation, however, takes place without any tests, exams, or other forms of grading. The key to effectively assessing students’ progress in learning is to find appropriate ways of giving feedback and create a friendly atmosphere in which teachers can communicate with their students. American teachers participating in the TEIP program use the principles of formative assessment.
