When he was 80 years old, a fire appeared to him in a bush, but the bush was not consumed. When he moved close to behold this great sight, the Lord spoke to him from the bush and commanded him to bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt. God worked at his hands the ten plagues upon the Egyptians, the first was the river which turned into blood and the last was the slaughter of the first born of the Egyptians. (Exodus 7-12) He brought the people out, and he divided the Red Sea and made them pass through it, and then he brought back the water over their enemies. He brought down for them «Manna» in the desert for forty years, and he made the water flow from a rock, and in spite of that they grumbled against him and many times they wanted to stone him. But he was long suffering with them, and he prayed to God for them, and because he loved them greatly, he said to God, «If You will not forgive this people their transgression, then blot out my name from Your book.» (Exodus 31:32) The Book testified that he spoke with God five hundred and seventy times as a man talks with his friend, and he was called the mouthpiece of God. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, after being with God, with the two tables of testimony in his hands, his face was shining. The children of Israel were afraid to come near him, so he put a veil on his face when he came near to talk to them. (Ex. 34:29-35) When he was 120 years old, God commanded him to commit the leadership of the people to Joshua, the son of Nun, his disciple. (Deuteronomy 34:9) Moses called him and commanded him with the commands of God and His Law, and informed Joshua that he was the one to bring the people into the promised land. After Moses had made the Tabernacle of Witness and everything which was in it as God had commanded him, he died in the mountain. He was buried there, and God hid his body so the children of Israel would not find it and worship it because the Book testifies there never rose up a prophet in Israel as Moses. On this day also, the righteous Moses, the head of the prophets, departed. He labored on behalf of the people of God till his death and delivered up himself for them. It was he who worked miracles and wonders in Egypt and in the Red Sea. When he became of age, refused to be called the son of the daughter of Pharaoh.
She brought him up when his parents left him on the banks of the river because they were afraid of Pharaoh who had commanded the slaughter of all male children of the Hebrews. When the daughter of Pharaoh found him by the river, she took him and reared him as her own son. When he had completed his 40 years, he saw an Egyptian slaying one of the Hebrews and straightaway he avenged the Hebrew and slew the Egyptian. The next day he saw two of the Hebrews fighting and he attempted to make peace between them. He, who was in the wrong, told him, «Do you want to slay me as you did slay the Egyptian yesterday?» Because of this, Moses fled to the land of Midian where he married and begot two sons. (Exodus 2)
Zacharias the priest, son of Bar-a-chi-as, is not Zacharias the prophet, who was one of the twelve minor prophets. Zacharias the prophet was not martyred but died and his body was found without decay. His prayers be with us. Amen.

It was said that during the slaughter of the children, Herod thought that John was the Christ. He requested John from his father, Zacharias, who said, “I do not know where the child is.” They threatened to kill him, but he did not heed. Herod ordered his soldiers to slay him. It was also said that when Herod sought John to slay him, Zacharias escaped with him to the temple and put him on the altar and when they caught up with him, he told the soldiers, “From here I accepted him from the Lord,” and thereupon the angel of God snatched away the child, and took him to the desert Zifana. When they did not find the child, they slew Zacharias between the temple and the altar. (Matthew 23:35)
On this day St. Zacharias, the priest, was martyred by the hand of Herod the King. When the angel Gabriel announced to him the birth of John his Son, he did not believe his word and the angel made him dumb, unable to speak until the child was born. (Luke 1: 18-22) When they named the child, he asked for a writing table and wrote that his name would be John. Then he spoke, and praised God. (Luke 1:63-79) The Holy Gospel gave testimony concerning him, that he and his wife were righteous, walking in the Law of God without blemish. When our Lord Christ was born, and the wise men came to worship Him, Herod was troubled and feared for his kingdom. Therefore, he gave the order to slay all the children of Bethlehem, from two years old and under, so he would kill the Lord Christ among them. The angel of God appeared to Joseph in a dream saying, “Take the child and flee to Egypt.” St. Joseph took the child Jesus and St. Mary, His mother, and went to Egypt as the angel of the Lord had told him. But John’s mother took him and fled to the mountain were she dwelt, bringing him up for six years. After her departure to heaven, the child remained in the desert till the day of his appearance to Israel. (Luke 1: 80)

On this day St. Matruna, who was a maid-servant to a Jewish lady, was martyred. She was of Christian parents, and her mistress used to entice her to adopt the Hebrew religion, but she refused. Therefore her mistress used to humiliate her, ill treat her, and over-burden her with servitude. One day she accompanied her mistress to the Jewish temple, then she went to the Christians church. And when her mistress asked her where she had been and why she did not enter their assembly, the Saint replied, «God had departed far from the synagogue that is yours, how shall I enter it? After her death, her mistress, because she feared that the authorities would hold her accountable for her blood, took St. Matruna to the top of her house and threw her down so that it would be said that she had fallen by accident. She was accursed by God, her feet slipped and she fell down, died and went to Hell. As for the Saint, she went to the eternal bliss.
The Martyrdom of Saint Basilides (Wasilides)
On this day, St. Basilides (Wasilides) who was a minister and counsellor for the Roman Empire, was martyred. He had many slaves and servants. Emperor Numerianus was the ruler, who was married to Basilides› sister, Patricia, and had a son called Yustus. Patricia was also the mother of Theodore El-Mishreke. Basilides had two sons: Awsabyos (Eusebyus) and Macarius.
hen the Persians waged war against Rome, Emperor Numerianus sent to them his son Yustus and Awsabyos, Basilides› son. Then he went to fight another enemy and was killed in that war. His kingdom was thus left vacant without a ruler.

One of the emperor›s daughters looked at him and took him as her husband. She made him emperor and called him, «Diocletian.» Shortly after, he forsook the Lord God of Heaven and worshipped idols. When Wasilides heard this, he was sorrowful, and he did not return to the service of the new Emperor. Meanwhile, Yustus, the son of Numerianus, and Awsabyos (Eusebius), the son of Basilides, returned from the war with triumphant victory. When they saw that the Emperor had renounced the faith, they were exceedingly sorry and drew their swords and wanted to slay Diocletian, the infidel Emperor, and to return the kingdom to its rightful owner Yustus, Numerianus› son. But Basilides prevented them from doing this. Then he gathered his army and slaves and informed them that he wished to lay down his life for the sake of Christ›s Name. They all answered saying, «We also will die with you.» They stood before Diocletian who feared them tremendously, for they were the rightful owners of the kingdom. So Romanus, Victor›s father, advised him to banish them to Egypt to be tortured there. She then took her out and beat her painfully, then she returned her to her imprisonment where she died.

Western Cities (Pentapolis). When Masrus saw him, he wondered why he had left his kingdom and his glory. Our Lord Christ sent His Angel and lifted Basilides up by the Holy Spirit to heaven, and showed him the spiritual dwellings, and his soul was comforted. As for his slaves, some were set free and some were martyred with him. St. Basilides endured severe tortures, on a squeezing machine (Hinbazeen) at times and at others his body was combed with iron combs. He was lifted onto a spiral device with a saw then thrusted him on a red hot iron bed. Masrus, the governor, did not leave out any means of torturing him. When he saw that Basilides remained steadfast in his faith, Masrus ordered to cut off Basilides holy head, thus he received the crown of martyrdom in the kingdom of heaven in return for the earthly kingdom which he had forsaken.
St. Cyril, 24th Pope of Alexandria, explained to Nestorius that, “Natures cannot be separated after they have become one by their union. Therefore we say that the Incarnated Word of God has only One Nature.” Nestorius would not turn from his teaching nor change his opinion. St. Cyril along with the whole Council rebuked him and threatened that they would excommunicate him, but he was adamant. Therefore, they excommunicated him and banished him from his chair. They confirmed that the Virgin St. Mary had given birth to the Incarnated God the Word, )Theotokos( or “The Mother of God”. They drew up the Canons and laid down the Laws. On this day of the year 431 A.D., the Holy Council at Ephesus which was attended by 200 bishops, was convened. It was the third of the Ecumenical Councils. That was in the twentieth year of the reign of Theodosius II, son of Arcadius, son of Theodosius the Great. They assembled because of the heresy of Nestorius who was Archbishop of Constantinople. He believed that St. Mary did not give birth to the incarnated God, but only to a human being, and that afterwards the Son of God dwelt in him, not the dwelling of unity but just the dwelling of will, and therefore, Christ because of that reason, had two natures and two wills. So these fathers convened, debated with Nestorius, and proved to him that He, who was born of the Virgin, was the incarnated God, as the angel said, “The Lord is with you; that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:28-32) And according to the saying of Isaiah, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel,” )Isaiah 7:14( and also, “His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father.” (Isaiah 9:6)

On the 2nd day od the month of Tote, the first month of the Coptic year of Martyrs …. The following day to the feast of Nairoz (Coptic New Year) …the church celebrates the martyrdom of St John the Baptist and Fore-runner … and on the first Sunday of the new Coptic year, the church (Bible) reading is for the Lord Jesus Christ speaking of St John the Baptist describing him as the greatest born of women.

For a man to be described as great is a great praise … but to be described in the Holy Bible as great … and even more to be described by the Lord Jesus Himself as the greatest born of women is a clear evidence of a very unique person there is no other like him in history of humanity … his birth was foretold by an angel … and was described on his birth as great before the Lord … he was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb … and he will precede the Lord with the spirit and power of Elijah … to prepare for the Lord a ready people … whilst still in his mother’s womb as a babe, he met the Lord as a babe (in St Mary’s womb), the Lord of humanity he has met on a spiritual level … he knew Him and wor shiped Him … he moved in his mother’s womb with joy as David’s joy dancing before the God’s ark of covenant (2 Samuel 6:14) … on his birth, his father Zechariah the priest prophesised that he will be called the prophet of the most High and will proceed before Him to prepare the way … the angels had carried him as a young child of few months to the wilderness … where he was cared for by God in the wilderness, eating honey and wild locust and wearing camel skins … where he stayed 30 years then appears to all of Israel … and only in 6 months he fulfilled his mission and prepared the way before the way (for the Lord) … in 6 months he did what no man has achieved in 60 years … just as he appeared suddenly; he also disappeared as a martyr leaving behind a footprint which cannot be erased in great glory and greatness which humanity has never known before or after him … St John the Baptist has become an architype for humanity … a prime example of a man with a Holy mission … his mission is to prepare the Lord’s way regardless of any difficulties on the way and regardless of all human oppo sition to him … putting behind him all human instruction … and putting in front of him only the words of God, His commandments … and teachings. Before he was born … Elijah the prophet was an exam ple for him … and after him, many have taken him as an example in fulfilling their mission in truth, might and courage … such as St John Chrysostom … and Anba Dioscorus (25th pope of Alexandria) … the long examples

the strong in faith … trusting in the Lord’s works in him … orders the skies to obey … “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” ))1st1st Kings 17) … and the skies obeyed and did not rain for three years and six months … the Lord cared for Elijah where the ravens brought bread and meat morning and evenings … then a poor widow in Zarephath of Sidon … afterwards Elijah has his courageous stand before the Is raelites rebuking them for their evil ways “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” … then he faces Ahab and Jezebel and the 450 prophets of Baal … he challenges all of them trusting in his God and knowing that God will hear him and asked them (Baal’s prophets( to offer a sacrifice before their god to be burnt by fire and they all fail but his sacrifice was accepted by God and fire comes and burns the sacrifice and the wood and waters. By the river, he executed all Baal’s prophets and God had mercy on the land and it rains again.
Elijah … the teacher and instructor who rebukes and teaches according to God’s commandments … he hears of Ahaziah son of Ahab who on his sickness sends messengers for the prophets of Baal -Zebub god of Ekron to be cured of his injuries, then they were met by Elijah who in turn said his famous words “Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Ze bub, the god of Ekron?” )2nd Kings 1( … Elijah had a mission … which he carried in greatness, strength and courage with a deep faith unshakable … a man of prayers … fasting and asceticism in this world … and still he has another mission because of it he was carried away in chariot of fire to heavens and he is there waiting to come before the Lord’s second coming with Enoch to warn the world and comfort the believers then they will receive the crowns of martyrdom … this is the spirit of Elijah and his strength which John the Baptist has taken and with such he strongly rebuked Herod and the sinners … preparing the way for the Lord.

Elijah the man of the wilderness who stood courageously to rebuke Ahab the king for taking Naboth the Jezreelite’s vineyard (1st Kings 21) saying “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours” and declaring to him the consequenc es of his evil doing and his evil wife Jezebel … rebuking him in all courage and strength … which made Ahab tare his clothing and ware sackcloth in humbleness before the ElijahLord.

The Pharisees were more interested in appearances … they made for themselves traditions and teachings which is the people’s instructions and refused God’s directives … they even refused God’s instructions for themselves … often, people of the world take the same stand; refusing the correct teachings … and the courageous teachers with a holy mission find them selves without an alternative but to rebuke and warn. And of those who took the attitude of St John the Baptist … is St John Chrysostom patriarch of ConHistorystantinopletells us about this courageous Patriarch … so it happened that a ruler of Alexandria had embez zled some money from a widow who went to the patriarch complaining, who in turn waited the arrival of the ruler to the church and upon his arrival, he detained him and ordered him to return the money to the widow … when Empress Eudoxia learned of this, she was angered because she sympathized with the Alexandrian ruler and she sent her soldiers to free the ruler by force. Upon the soldiers arrival, they found a terrifying Angel standing at (the door) preventing their entry … this made the empress fearful and she paid the money for the ruler to be freed … St John Chrysostom could not accept any action which was against God’s commandments … the Emperor Arcadius erected a statue sliver on a column of alabaster in a large square next to largest church in town … on the day of revealing the statue, the square was turned to a huge celebration space with dancing and partying activities next to the church which was acceptable to St John Chrysostom, so he in disapproval forbad the celebrations and declared it against the church … he did not take any notice of the Emperor’s warnings and threats and on the day the feast for St John the Baptist, he stood and gave his famous sermon which began with the scolding words “ Again Herodias raves; again she is troubled; she dances again; and again desires to receive John’s (the Baptist) head in a charger” and what is more amazing is that Em press Eudoxia acted exactly the same way as Jezebel and Herodias in seeking revenge! .. she asked for an ecumenical council to be held with 100 bishops present all opposing and had grudges against St John Chrysostom, condemning him to exile … so St John Chrysostom went to his exile in a tiring journey which is argues considering his age and health to a far exile. He spent approximately 3 years in exile and as he was shifted to another exile place, his health deteriorate and he was taken to a small church on the way where he received Holy Communion and his sole departed saying “let the Lord be Blessed in every thing … Amen”. Maybe one of the best examples of following St John the Baptist’s standards is St Anba Dioscorus … protector of faith … pope of Alexandria … who stood with strength and courage against all heresies and faced all the powers and kings of the world … he was the first to defend the faith against Eutyches who denied the humanity of Christ our Lord … strangely the same heresy which he opposed and refuted strongly is what he was accused with later … and alas some historian wrongly still accuse us with it … and the western churches in their attempts to refute Eutyches’ heresy; they fell in the opposing heresy of Nestorianism which separates the natures of Christ … here, we see the courage of Anba Dioscorus not fearing anyone to face the heretics and here again the civil authorities and political movements within the church to hold the ecumenical council of Chalcedon under the instructions of the Emperor and civil judges sit in judgement )for the first time in the history) of the church councils) … it is clear, this was not to discuss any heresy but to make Anba Dioscorus and accused despite that he was supposed to head this council meetings … and the plot is evident by stopping him from attending by force and passing judgement against him falsely and exiling him to the isle of Gagra … he spent there 5 years in which he gained all the pagan inhabitants of the island to Christian ity, then he departed (this life) to His Masters while he is in exile away from his seat … but his people in Alexandria (the Coptic church) remained loyal to him and refused any impostor forced upon them by the king … his people have suffered many pains in preserving the correct faith and the Orthodox traditions.
