Lord Mayor’s Welcome Welcome from the Lord Mayor of Dublin I welcome you all to our capital city in celebration of Dublin Pride. There is a range of exciting events culminating in the Pride Parade which celebrates the diversity of our city. Dublin City Council is proud to work with Dublin Pride for this event and I wish all the organisers and those taking part an enjoyable weekend. Andrew Montague Lord Mayor of Dublin
Welcome Ladies, Gentlemen and Others! Happy Pride! Welcome to the Dublin Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender & Queer Festival 2012 on behalf of all of those volunteering with Pride this year! Bród shona daoibh go léir! Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur róimh go Féile Leispeach, Aerach, Daoine Dhá-Gnéiseach, Idir-Gnéiseach agus Muintir Ait Baile Átha Cliath ar shon na daoine atá ag obair saor in aisce an bhliain seo! As we celebrate Pride and prepare to “show our true colours”, we are reminded of the progress that has been made in the journey to secure equal rights for lgbtq people in Ireland within the past twelve months. Marriage equality is firmly on the agenda for the upcoming Constitutional Convention. The United States of America are leading the charge in calling international governments to recognise that lgbtq rights are human rights. Celebrities are endorsing campaigns against homophobic bullying nationally and internationally. In light of these advances, it is disappointing to realise that some issues have not progressed. Gender recognition legislation has stalled. Children within samesex partnerships are at risk if the biological parent dies. We call on our elected officials to legislate for full equality as soon as possible.

2012 represents a landmark for Dublin LGBTQ Pride. We are moving our postparade festivities to Merrion Square to ensure that more people can share the relaxed, celebratory atmosphere for which Pride is famous. We invite everyone to celebrate Pride with us, colourfully and responsibly.
Grand Marshall Panti I was delighted and honoured to be asked by the Pride committee to be the Grand Marshal of this year’s 2012 parade. I’ve been on the parade for many years, but this year, with the parade route and the post parade venue changing, it feels like a new beginning for the Dublin Pride Festival. The parade has grown in size every year and the move to Merrion Square is a real milestone for both the Pride Festival and the LGBT community itself, which like the parade has grown more confident, vibrant and visible. The Pride Committee has worked very closely with Dublin City Council and the Gardaí to agree on the new parade route and the use of Merrion Square to allow more people enjoy the festivities. Being the first year of the new arrangement it’s particularly important that everything thing runs smoothly and safely in order to secure the change for future years, so please be careful and follow the directions of both the stewards and the Gardaí. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated folks! The theme of this year’s parade is “show your true colours” - a motto I’ve done my best to follow in my own life! Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful Pride. See you all on the parade! Panti

Show your true colours Hilde Jacobs & Lorraine McNamara Can music change lives? Yes it can. Snow Patrol certainly can! Our story begins when I, Belgian citizen Hilde Jacobs, met Lorraine Mc Namara (as Irish as the name sounds) after Lorraine had flown over to Belgium for one of Europe`s major summer festivals: Rock Werchter (think “Oxegen”). Snow Patrol were playing. “Keep in touch” is easier said than done when geography does its best to separate your home countries. So after 16 months of commuting the decision as to which country would become our homeland was made in favour of Belgium – for the time being anyway. Upon Lorraine’s arrival we immediately set about applying for “Legal Cohabitation” i.e. the form of registered partnership recognised in Belgium providing limited rights to registered same-sex as well as opposite-sex couples. To do this, a “Stable and Long-Term Relationship” needed to be proven, so out with the holiday photos and intimate emails and in with the embarrassment… While we were very happy with this recognition deep down we knew that our ultimate aim was to exchange vows the same as every other happy couple who want to celebrate their commitment by marrying. This was a little more challenging and time consuming than we expected, taking into account that Belgium was the second country in the world to legally recognise same-sex marriage. Initially we decided to have a low key wedding amongst friends because even though our families have always been supportive we had no idea how they would react to an actual “Gay Wedding”, but we quickly had to cancel that booking, as everyone insisted on being part of our special day, which is the best wedding gift possible. It was a long busy road from the Antwerp Town Hall to the Irish Embassy which included an apology from the Irish embassy when they told us our marriage would not be recognised in Ireland. Kafka was never far away either, but we guessed even he smiled when we managed to finalise our paperwork in April this year. So we will get to make those vows in September 2012 and we hope and believe things will change in Ireland and that if we decide to live there we can do so as a recognised married couple.

MARRIAGEQUALITY
Show your true colours Broden Giambrone Like many transgender people I wrestled with my gender identity privately for several years, trying to find the language to accurately describe what I was feeling and working up the courage to share this intrinsic fact about myself with others. At 19 I left my hometown and went to University in a new city. I was full of feelings of freedom at starting a new chapter of my life. But those were also some of the darkest days of my life as it was becoming increasingly difficult to live as female. I felt like a thick shroud of isolation, depression and fear had wrapped itself around me and I was immobilised. We live in a society that tells us that differences are bad and that we should be ashamed if our lives deviate from the prescribed path. At best trans people are seen as tragic and at worse we are freaks or objects of derision. Many of us internalise these negative ideas and as we come to terms with our gender identity we are forced to battle not only external voices that tell us we’re wrong but the voices in our own head that say we should not be who we are. I know from experience that what helps silence those voices are a strong network of support. It is friends and family who stand beside you and encourage you to become the person you need to be. One of my good friends spent hours with me in a cafe as we tried out new names for me. Other friends were vigilant in correcting people when they used the wrong name or pronouns. My family quickly decided that it was better to have a thriving son than a miserable daughter. It was this support that gave me the space to grow into the confident man I am. I can say without hesitation that I am proud of being trans. The challenges I’ve faced have made me tough and resilient but also reflective and open. My journey has afforded me perspective and a nuanced understanding of gender. Combatting transphobia has given me a strong commitment to social justice because I know the struggles of all marginalised people are linked. But at the end of the day, what has made the biggest difference to me is seeing trans people who stand tall, support each other, speak out, confront injustice, advocate for change, wow us with their creativity and have the courage to live just as they are.
This September, hundreds of trans activists & human rights workers will travel from across Europe to meet for three days in Dublin...
We work to raise awareness in society, because with understanding comes acceptance. We work for fair treatment in our medical, political, educational and legal systems.
7-9 September 2012 TENI hosts the 4th European Transgender Council at Dublin City University
Don’t miss it! tgeu.org/council2012
We work to support individuals and families facing gender identity issues for the first time. We work with groups across the country to ensure that Ireland’s trans community is strong and sustainable.

Joel Ant Loll-Mckeever I find it difficult to decide how comfortable I am with expressing my sexuality around people. I’ve never had a firm attitude towards it that I stick to all the time, I can be more myself or less myself depending on who I’m with and where I am. When I was a teenager and still in the process of understanding my identity I definitely downplayed parts of my personality and stayed quiet when I would have otherwise spoken out. I was afraid of being labelled or defined by my sexuality. Coming out as bisexual always felt like a two-step process; first telling people I wasn’t straight and then having to convince them I was bisexual and not gay. It was difficult to be strong about who I was when I never really got the chance to figure that out for myself before I had to defend it. I was much happier when I got to college. The diverse friends I’ve made, from so many different backgrounds have made me a lot more confident about expressing my personality and not restraining or censoring myself. I still encounter some people who make me uncomfortable about expressing my sexuality though. I think that the discrimination, biphobia that comes from within the LGBTQ community is the most disturbing; it’s hard to understand why anyone who has been bullied or struggled with their identity like most LGBTQ people have could turn around and do that to someone else. Some places I’ve worked have been unsafe environments to be out or vocal about my sexuality in, which is difficult as it not only stops me from really engaging with colleagues but it made me feel ashamed because I’m acting like I’ve something to hide. There are absolutely workplaces where I can be myself as well, and those are the ones I stick with. On the whole I think it’s a lot easier to be myself now than it used to be. Maybe it’s the friends I’ve made or perhaps I’m just more confident, but it feels like it’s more possible now than ever before to be myself and do the things I want. My sexuality no longer has to be a defining or even particularly interesting part of my personality. I have the space to be the person I want to be.

Eva Fairbrother All teenagers go through tough times growing up but the fact that I had to come to terms with being a lesbian was twice as hard. I grew up in a very religious household and I’m sure many of you can relate to me. For all of you that know and understand how nasty and controlling an all girls secondary school in a small town could be, you can only imagine trying to come out announcing that I am gay. I was scared at the possibility that I might not have any friends left once the word had spread. In my group of friends it just wasn’t considered normal, girls had boyfriends not girlfriends. I had convinced myself to keep it quiet until I graduated school and was away from that place and the drama that came with it. When I finally told them I was stunned to hear their response, they giggled and said “Eva, was that it?” I am so lucky to have such supportive friends and family by my side. However, you will always find that one person that will always have a problem with you and who you are. They will always make it known to you that they have an issue with you. They might follow you around, call you names or even make you feel uncomfortable when you’re on a night out. Unfortunately, we have to come across those people, sometimes in everyday life. My advice to anyone who is struggling to get the public bus, go for coffee or even have a social life with your friends because of these people - ignore them. I know it’s easier said than done but just walk by them, with your head held high and full of pride, Be proud of who you are. You’re one in ten billion, and if you can’t be yourself then who else are you going to be? Like every year I look forward to the Gay Pride Parade. But this year, I’m marching for our rights for equal marriage. I will be walking through the streets of Dublin with my friends fighting for what we believe in. And as the saying goes; ‘We’re here, we’re queer and we’re not going anywhere!’

AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA WISHES EVERYONE IN THE GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY AN ENJOYABLE AND SAFE PRIDE 2012
5 TIPS FOR SAFETY *Avoid areas where you may be venerable to assault. *If you are meeting someone for the first time, try to meet in a restaurant or bar, rather than somewhere private and be sure to tell someone where you are going or leave a note of the details behind you. *If it's late at night and you have a few drinks taken, consider taking a taxi home rather than walking. *If you have just met someone, be careful about going to their place or bringing them back to your place *Avoid over consumption of alcohol
If you become the victim of a crime, please report it the Gardai. You may contact your local Gardai or one of the Liaison Officiers listed on the contact page. Further information available from Inspector Finbar Murphy, Garda Community Relations Section telephone 01-666-3831 www.garda.ie gayliason@iol.ie
