Housing Paradox of Lisbon From Evolved to Devolute Intervention in a Pombalino Block Rossio - Praça da Figueira

FA-UTL | Master Thesis Lisboa, Portugal | 2015 - 2016 Orientation: Arch. Margarida Louro

THEME The theme “Houses for a Small Planet“ is all about thinking and adequate new forms of living in specific places and cultures. The Earth population keeps on exponencially raising implying the need for new typologies and ways to acomodate population with basic conditions, and security as top priorities. SETTING Lisbon one of the oldest european capital cities, located in Portugal, is being highly affected by desertification on the last few decades. The high number of delerict buildings has negativetly affected the city. The core idea of this project is the renovation of the capital most affected area, by transforming an entire block and its surrounding squares . Being the primary goal to attract a vibrant and active population to an historic, and almost desertified resident area.

This building is an eighteenth century building, constructed after the 1755 earthquake that devastated this area. Not only this building is located between two of the most important squares of the city (Rossio & Figueira Squares), but also is completly empty from it’s first floor upwards. It’s strategic location, dimension and historical heritage has prooven to be the perfect building to ignite the city capital’s heart.

Faro Sea Front Redevelopment Algarve

UAL | 3º YEAR FARO, Portugal | 2008 - 2009 Colaboration: Nuno Machado Orientation: Arch. José Adrião & Arch. Ricardo Carvalho

SITE Faro Island is located in Algarve, on the Portuguese south coast. The island is actually a peninsula between the River (Natural Park of Ria Formosa) and the Atlantic Ocean. This island has been affected by the increase of urban density, mostly during summer time. The natural dune barrier is being destroyed by construtions, causing the sea level to rise, urging an immediate intervention. With an unique surrounding landscape and wonderful weather this place is a popular bathing area in Faro.

CONCEPT The intervention has been planned in two phases. The first phase is focused in providing a coherent connection to all sectors of the island. This is done by restricting the access only to owners and providing multiple paths, pedrestrian and cycling walks, allied with better public transportation. The second phase aim to organize and naturalize the island. This would be achieved with progressive demolions of illegal housings and a new design of the main square. This would allow the natural regeneration of both it’s fauna and flora. The ideia is to preserve the identity of the island and enhancing it’s features, allowing a better harmony between human and nature.

RESIDENCE HOTEL CONCEPT

MODULAR DIAGRAM STUDY 25

The new proposed building is located in the middle of the island, at the old camping area (that was allocated further to the east side). The design needed to remit and relate to the old fishing constructions that have such a strong image and memory to this island. The program aim was to create a residence/hotel that included 50 habitations and additionally incoporate and environmental research area in the services of this hotel. The hotel volume was fragmented into 5 islands, incorporating the residential area on the center islands and the services areas at the extremities. At the residential areas, in order to promote a more active and vivid interaction between the residents, a common space was designed including outdoor esplanade, kitchens, laundries and storage rooms. This strategy aimed to achieve a stronger feeling of belonging and relation with this beautiful place. The services of this hotel are open to public in order to serve the Faro island needs, and include a Gymnasium, Restaurant, Conference Room, Environmental Research Center, Laboraroty Rooms and a Public Library.

Small Villa in Carnaxide - Oeiras UAL | 2ยบ YEAR Oeiras, Portugal | 2007 - 2008 Orientation: Arch. Manuel Vicente Arch. Margarida Cardoso Menezes

SITE Vila Utopia is a small luxury condominum near Lisboa (10km) in Oeiras - Carnaxide. Located on a small slope exposed to the South, open on a clear landscape, with the estuary of the Tagus river and Monsanto park in the background. The intervention site has 45.000 square meters of total area with an urban matrix of 45 single family houses designed by more than 15 prestigious Portuguese Architects (Souto Moura, Gonรงalo Byrne, Aires Mateus, Federico Valsassina and more). It aims for a luxury and modern living concept near the capital.

CONCEPT Based on the academic premisses for this project, a new urban plan organization has taken place in order to achieve differencial range and sizes of housing plots. This particular villa was designed for a small plot (no more than 130 square meters) and had to incorporate a luxury V3 villa. With such a small set for this house deployment, the solution was to build the swimming pool on the first floor and dig a basement aiming to maximize the contruction area. The program for this villa is dictated by this strategy. On the basement, are located the garage, the pool machine house, a laundy room and a lounge space. At the ground floor are located the three bedrooms, and a living area with kitchen. On the top floor we find the swimming pool, a shower area, the terrace, and a dinning area The villa solution was found using the constrains of site to create a house that meets all the modern demands.
