The Halewood Curriculum “All students to make at least ‘good’ progress in each year of their education” Our curriculum seeks to give all students a broad, balanced education whilst preparing them for the challenges ahead. We take great care in personalising the curriculum to meet individual student needs. Students are encouraged to become independent learners and to participate in the wide range of extra-curricular activities that are offered. There is a strong emphasis on literacy, numeracy as well as developing learning and thinking skills within all the curriculum areas.

Years 7 - 9 Students study English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Dance, Design Technology, Drama, Geography, History, IT, Languages, Music, PE, Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. The Key Stage 3 curriculum is flexible and can be adapted to meet with individual needs of students. Throughout Key Stage 3 parents receive regular feedback about the progress of their child.

Years 10 & 11 Students access the Core curriculum as well as subjects in which they are particularly interested or have shown a passion for. Students follow a learning pathway which best meets their needs. There are a wide range of qualifications, academic and vocational, on offer to all our students.

Halewood Academy Sixth Form Halewood offers a variety of A Level and Level 3 qualifications. Our Sixth Form is a popular destination for many of our students. The Sixth Form offers continuity from Year 11, clear progression pathways and an excellent student support system.

The transition from Primary to Secondary school is crucial and we work hard to ensure it is a smooth process. Great care is taken when placing our students into Form groups in Year 7.

“I am pleased with the progress my son is making. I know his teachers are keen that he remains highly motivated and works to the best of his ability” Year 7 Parent 2014

Each year group has a pastoral leader, assistant pastoral leader, and a team of form tutors. The form tutor is the first point of contact for students and parents/carers. Form Tutors monitor student progress, attendance and behaviour supported by the Pastoral Team. The formal points of contact with parents/carers each year are written reports, parents/carers’ evenings and information from progress reviews. Our priority is to ensure all students make at least ‘good’ progress each year. Key staff monitor student attainment and progress, identifying students who are not meeting their targets, implementing and monitoring relevant intervention strategies and regularly liaising with subject staff and curriculum leaders in order to improve outcomes for students. Parents and Carers are free to contact school at any time to discuss their child’s progress.

Halewood Academy

“I would definitely recommend this school to other parents. The school offers plenty of support for my children” Year 7 Parent 2014 We believe that students have the right to learn and that teachers have the right to teach. Halewood Academy students are expected to follow a ‘Behaviour for Learning’ policy which encourages a positive learning ethos where students are rewarded for their efforts. The following ‘Charter of Rights’ and ‘Expectations for All’ have been agreed by governors, staff and students.

Charter of Rights In Halewood Academy • every student has the right to learn • every teacher has the right to teach • we all have the right to feel and be safe • we all have the right to dignity and respect

Expectations for All Students Students will • treat everyone with respect • be punctual to all lessons • wear correct uniform at all times • bring all relevant equipment to lessons • work to the best of their ability Any behaviour which is a cause for concern is dealt with through resolution meetings. Parents/carers are kept informed and are expected to help the school maintain its high standards.

Attendance We expect excellent attendance and punctuality. Excellent attendance (95%+) is essential to ensure that students make consistent progress and achieve their full potential academically, socially, and in extra-curricular activities. Parents/carers are asked to contact the Academy on the first day of any absence and provide an expected date of return. Holidays during term time cannot be authorised.

Lunchtime Arrangements All students stay on site during lunchtime. Hot meals, sandwiches and snacks are served in school. We have a cashless catering system. Alternatively students may bring a packed lunch. If you would like information regarding free school meals, forms are available from your local council.

Homework Homework is essential for all students as it enhances skills, improves knowledge and provides valuable practice for external examinations. At the start of the year all students are given a homework timetable. All students are expected to write details of the homework set into their planners, which the school provides. Parents/carers can check all homework that has been set through the school website.
