We fully support our students through option choices and with the guidance of your tutor, we will help you make the transition from GCSE to A levels. Your tutor will help you with a range of concerns including monitoring academic progress, helping you with

career aspirations as well as caring for your wider well-being. In HS6 we know that it is important for you to fully develop, not just academically, but socially and emotionally with a strong sense of citizenship and of the wider community. Through our Enrichment programme you will be given opportunities to volunteer, raise funds for charity and be an integral part of our 6th form leadership. The 6th form is very much at the heart of Hendon School and we share a common ethos and approach. We continue to be an inclusive school and so our 6th form provision is varied to ensure that we cater for a range of students and are able to match future career and university ambition to your chosen A level pathway. HS6 is very much full of opportunities and challenges which are exciting and rewarding and which truly integrates all students into the school community. We invite you to explore our prospectus and the companion course directory to have a deeper understanding of what we have to offer, and to allow us to show you how dynamic and special our current students are, and the reasons why you should join us at HS6.

Rhona Povey, Headteacher.

“I trusted Hendon School teachers and knew that Hendon would give me the support I needed in order to achieve.

HS6 Curriculum and Academic Achievement HS6 offers a broad curriculum with a range of A levels, and level 2 and 3 Technical subjects. We want to ensure that when you enrol with us you are on a suitable course where you can excel and discover your passion for the subject. Our balanced curriculum also provides several pathways into university, apprenticeships, training, or the world of work.

Since inclusion is at the heart of who we are at Hendon, we also offer level 2 subjects which will be suitable for students who need to further build upon the skills gained during GCSEs before they embark on further level 3 Technical subjects. Whatever course a student chooses at HS6 our key goal is to help our students meet the academic demands of their courses and inspire success in everything that they undertake.

Positive Outcomes We believe that it is important to provide academic challenge and promote intellectual vigour that demonstrates what our students are capable of achieving. Most of our students aspire to university, with a yearly average of approximately 80% of

our students going on to university. The quality of teaching and support that HS6 students receive, helps prepare them for success once they have moved on to their future aspirations.

“The staff at HS6 are amazing. They inspired and motivated me to pursue a career in medicine.

“HS6 staff are ambitious for us. They are great teachers.”

Facilities to Support Learning At HS6 our expectation is that every student should achieve their academic potential. We are committed to providing high quality teaching in a supportive environment. We know that a key to inspiring a love for learning, and the commitment to widening our students’ horizons, is by consistently delivering inspirational teaching.

In addition to timetabled lessons, students are encouraged to become independent learners, by exploring opportunities to improve their subject knowledge and discover courses and interests linked to future aspirations. We have a dedicated independent learning manager who monitors the study centre, and helps create a constructive atmosphere for learning when students are not in teacher-led lessons.

Expectations and Responsibilities We have the highest expectations of all our students, and firmly believe in the connection between excellent attendance and punctuality, a structured daily routine, and high achievement. We work towards instilling in our students the importance of taking responsibility for their learning, development and progress.

We encourage constructive study habits that will transfer into the skills needed at university, training and in employment.

Pastoral Care in HS6 We want every student to feel safe, happy and healthy in our 6th form. There is a dedicated pastoral team of tutors, who support and guide students through each school day, as well as through the UCAS process. We recognise the importance of building good relationships between students and tutors and we have a bespoke pastoral programme

based on academic, enrichment opportunities and wider cultural and world issues, as part of preparing students for life after 6th form. HS6 tutors’ ultimate aim is to help all our students successfully make the important transition from school into higher education, work or training.

Enrichment Opportunities At HS6 we are committed to preparing students for life. This means that while a sound academic foundation is paramount, it is also important to develop life skills that will ensure that students can be successful in whatever university course or career they pursue. To complement our post-16 provision we offer a range of enrichment activities that will help students achieve their potential, and flourish inside and outside the classroom. We recognise that universities and employers look for more than just academics when choosing the best candidates, so our enrichment programme supports students in

becoming involved in all aspects of both school and outside life. We believe that enrichment activities build character and purpose and develops leadership and organisational skills. We have an enthusiastic 6th form executive team, and we encourage participation in National Citizen Services (NCS). We also have a number of in-house programmes including year 7 paired reading and student mentoring. Joining us in HS6 will help develop you to become a positive role model for the school and the wider community.

Life in HS6 At HS6, we encourage students to understand the importance of care and kindness and aim to develop our students as responsible individuals. We are a friendly school, and warmly welcome new students into our 6th form. New students usually quickly settle in to HS6 life, easily making friends and developing positive relationships with teachers and

other staff. In HS6, through the range of activities that we offer, students develop other skills, talents and interests. Although the journey from GCSE through A levels and then life after 6th form can be challenging, students will be fully supported by HS6 tutors and staff.

“Life in HS6 is diverse as there is an eclectic mix of people cultures and experiences. This helps in broadening my perspective and prepares me for the real world.

Career Guidance Every HS6 student receives a work experience interview with the Information Advice and Guidance coordinator and can also seek advice regarding career, apprenticeship, volunteering, university finance and employment. Students are supported by a weekly timetabled SMART Futures lesson. This all-school programme focuses on development of personal and professional

skills so that students can make informed decisions regarding future education and chosen career paths. Students develop long-term planning, CV writing and interview skills. Students are also encouraged to attend university taster days and summer schools, as well as other activities that demonstrate their ability to balance varied commitments with academic life.
