BRINGING OUT THE BEST

WELCOME Welcome to Thomas Knyvett College, part of the Howard Partnership Trust.

Thomas Knyvett College is a successful, over-subscribed school. As an exceptional learning community we have developed our vision and we are as ambitious as ever for our students and staff. We see the College as the central resource for learning and support in the local community and continue to strive for excellence in all we do. At Thomas Knyvett we hope we make all our students feel that they have the ability and support to achieve to a very high level. We work hard to ensure that they have the skills and self-belief to compete and flourish in a changing educational and social environment, no matter how challenging. We work to ensure that teachers deliver consistently good lessons and keep abreast of new techniques and research that impact positively on student progress. At Thomas Knyvett we have absolute belief in our young people and we experience on a day to day basis the fulfilment that working with young people can bring. We understand the demands of modern parenting and work in partnership with our parents to ensure every student reaches their full potential. By talking about the importance of our values; pride, respect, open mindness, unity and determination, together we can help our young people make good decisions. With exciting times ahead, we continue to drive school improvement at Thomas Knyvett. Our facilities have been upgraded considerably and we are working with Brooklands College to extend provision for Spelthorne learners. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which is constantly reviewed to ensure we motivate and inspire all our students. We are all excited by the journey we are on and hope you find our website an effective tool to learn more about us.

OUR STAFF I have really enjoyed my time at TKC so far and found going from primary school to secondary school easy. When coming to TKC you find your place instantly and your tutor helps you make friends. If you have any problems they are solved straight away.

All members of our teaching staff are highly qualified and all are graduates or teachers with specialist qualifications in their respective subject areas. In the leadership of the school the Headteacher is supported by a team of Deputy and Assistant Headteachers. Curriculum areas are led by Faculty Leaders, and pastoral areas are led by Year Leaders. Staff development is an important and ongoing priority, and significant investment is put into staff training. We have an effective support staff team which includes clerical and administrative staff, specialist technicians, librarians, and on-site premises team. Careers guidance is provided by senior members of staff working with an external specialist careers co-ordinator from Innervate. A full list of staff can be found on our website,

CURRICULUM, PASTORAL CARE AND SUPPORT

At Thomas Knyvett College we deliver a broad, balanced high quality curriculum that provides a stimulating and demanding education for all students. The curriculum is timetabled in a ten day cycle of 5 one hour long lessons and is underpinned by the following characteristics: • A personalised approach to ensure the needs of each student are met. • Challenging and motivational, where progression is ensured. • Recognition of the new skills required to achieve in a changing world – new technologies, critical analysis, problem solving and creativity. • Skills and knowledge are merged in the curriculum and not to be mutually exclusive. • Access to both academic and vocational subjects. • Preparation to be active citizens in a complex world. • Assessment for learning needs to be integrated as a key to differentiation, motivation, independence and maximising achievement. It is important for students to have time to settle down in their new environment before setting decisions are made. For this reason, ability setting in some subjects will be introduced gradually, as it is also our belief that linear subjects should have the facility to set students according to their own subject criteria. As the students progress through the college more curriculum areas use ability setting arrangements so that the teaching level and pace of work is appropriate to the students’ needs. Full details of our KS3 curriculum and Key Stage 4 choices can be found on our website. To ‘bring out the best’ in all our students it is important that we work together with parents.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Educational Visits

Outside Interests

We firmly believe in the importance of educational visits to reinforce learning in the classroom. Residential visits have included field trips for Geography and language visits to France and Spain. Departments arrange a wide variety of curriculumrelated day visits including theatres, conferences and workshops, and places of scientific, historical and cultural interest.

It is hoped that all students will continue to pursue those outside interests which contribute to the development of a rounded personality. Regular jobs are not encouraged if they reduce a student’s ability to participate in school or other activities, or compete for excessive amounts of time.

To further broaden the students’ experience, opportunities for social interaction and personal development are offered via extra-curricular days which include residential trips and outward-bound activities, in addition to the enrichment activities, workshops, and many House competitions that take place within school.

The College’s Provision The College has a tradition of involvement in ‘public celebrations’ of the visual and performing arts. Regular exhibitions of student art work celebrate success in Art, Design and Technology. College musical productions and a variety of events such as fashion shows, talent shows and drama workshops enable all students to take part in ‘performance activities’.

Clubs and Societies Recognising that we have a responsibility to encourage, stimulate and develop the interests of the students outside the classroom, we encourage all students to involve themselves in the comprehensive extra-curricular activities available to them. The activities on offer will reflect the interests of students and staff.

All adults who work with pupils are Disclosure and Barring Service checked. We follow Surrey Local Authority’s safeguarding procedures and where necessary work in partnership with other agencies that support children and families, to ensure we address the needs of our students with sensitivity, care and confidentiality.

Pupils are provided with many learning opportunities about how to stay safe through personal, social and health education lessons... They understand how to protect themselves from threats that they may routinely face, such as online or on social media. Ofsted 2018

THE HOWARD PARTNERSHIP TRUST

The Howard Partnership Trust (THPT) grew out of a long-standing federation, the first in Surrey, originally formed in 2007 at the request of the Department of Education and Surrey Local Authority. The success of this federation between Howard of Effingham, an Ofsted Outstanding school, and Thomas Knyvett College resulted in the formation of THPT when the partnership’s first primary school, Kenyngton Manor, joined in 2013. The Multi Academy Trust (MAT) now comprises a diverse range of primary and secondary schools across Surrey. All our schools uphold a shared vision in which there is a commitment to ‘bringing out the best’ in young people of all abilities and aptitudes, so increasing their life-chances. Those working in partnership with THPT are justly proud of the strength of collaboration and inclusion present in each of our schools. We believe that by embedding a culture built around our ethos of partnership, inclusion, excellence and energy, our vision can succeed. The inclusive ethos of the MAT is enhanced by a number of Special Centres attached to mainstream settings. Schools within THPT remain local schools and retain their own unique features to serve their local communities. However, they are all underpinned with the same guiding principles: namely to ensure that a first rate education is provided through consistently high quality teaching which facilitates excellent learning within an inclusive, caring, vibrant environment. THPT schools provide a student-centred, broad curriculum with a personalised approach where the individual student lies at the heart of everything we do.
