Headteacher’s Message This summer has been, among other things, a summer of sport. If you like cricket we have seen England beat Australia 5-nil in the recent one day series, in football we have enjoyed the World Cup in Russia and here at Holy Family we have seen the completion of our wonderful new Sports Centre. I am so pleased that this project has been successfully completed as, for many years, we did not have the facilities which the talent and ability of our students merited. I want to thank past and present members of the PE department for encouraging great success among our students thus far – we have always punched above our weight as a school in sporting terms - despite not having a sports hall or playing fields. Now the long wait is over and we have a state of the art Sports Centre which will provide facilities for basketball, netball, football, handball, gymnastic, trampolining and many other activities. The Sports Centre also includes a fitness room which will enable us to use cardiovascular fitness equipment including rowing machines and cross-training equipment. The Sports Centre is there for all Holy Family students and also for the wider community. We will be making the facilities available for lettings out of school hours and welcome enquiries about this to the school.

We also help our primary schools in the Aquinas Trust to run an inter-primary school Sports Day each year. This involves pupils in Yr 2 and Yr 6 and they enjoy the chance to compete against each other and meet other pupils in the Aquinas Trust. Our sixth formers and Sports Leaders help out on this day and it is good to see young people from Yr 2 through to Yr 13 being involved in sport together. Aside from matters of a sporting nature we have had a busy end to the summer term with a fantastic music concert – Around the World in 80 minutes – the Yr 11 and Yr 13 Leavers Masses and Proms and our annual Achievement Evening to name but three. Of course, we were also very busy with public exams and we look forward to the results of these in August. I hope that you enjoy reading about the success of our students and the many activities they are involved in. One of the best things about Holy Family is how busy life is here and the fantastic array of opportunities that are on offer to everyone. Our very best wishes to you at the end of this new academic year and thank you for your support of the Holy Family community. Dr Andy Stone

We held a wonderful Sports Day on June 22nd this year, which featured many competitive athletic events and some fun activities too. The staff relay race was very keenly contested and sixth form teams ran against the staff too. The great thing about the day, apart from the weather, was the level of participation and the evident enjoyment of the students involved. Thanks to all our PE staff for putting the day together so well.

Sports Events

Sports Day The most highly anticipated event of the year took place on the 22nd June this year. Sports Day. The weather was perfect, the Pool and Track was recently refurbished and Holy Family have been winning all over the Borough this year! So we knew it was going to be tough competition to see which House would take home the trophy. There were track and field events ranging from 100m, to relay, to agility courses and football shootouts - an event for everyone! Each form competed in the various events to gain points for their houses! The ‘Hydro Hut’ run by our Business Studies students was well stocked supplying snacks, drinks and this year slushies to the competitors, giving them that extra energy boost that they needed! The Media team were busy capturing the whole day, Rebecca and Savannah in Yr12 ran more than the competitors to get all the shots! Mrs Raeburn was our announcer

Live Reactions Here’s how the students found the day:

• • • • • • •

Natalia S 9A – I won long jump today I feel good even though every year I get second place and was hoping for first but second place is still good. Lucy A 9A – Today I’m supporting St Anne, we are doing well so far. Bill 9E – Today the best thing about sports day is me winning the Football challenge! Rebecca 12S – Resident photographer – really fun to see everyone enjoying the sports and capturing the podium winners and also taking sneaky candid photos! Mrs Belgrave – I’m really enjoying handing out the medals to the competitors. Philomena look like they are going for gold. I’m just about to start my teacher relay training with the team. Angela 10E – It’s fun, I’ve won 200m! Mr McGlynn – I’ve been doing the agility course it’s been great fun!

extraordinaire this year making sure all competitors knew when to get to their events. And of course the most intense event of them all... the staff relay! This year won (by a mile) by St. Philomena House! The team included, Miss Hall, Miss Paul-Jones, Mr McGlynn, and Mr (super fast) Akubuko. Sports Day is always a enjoyable day where we celebrate our sporting successes as a whole school. A massive thank you to the PE Department who always organise such a great day and all the staff involved in running the events, timing events, logging winners, handing out medals and taking part in the staff relay and 100m. Next year is going to be a great year of sport for us with the opening of our brand new sports hall and fitness centre so watch this space for even more gold medals!

Anna-Rose 7AS – I’m enjoying sports day – my event was discus – it’s the first time I’ve done that event. Rihanna 7A - I’ve been doing bullseye! It’s been a really good experience seeing everyone involved in sports. Kermal 7E – I’ve had three events which were agility, hurdles and standing triple jump – I went for hurdles first then triple and agility. I got my bronze on standing triple. Doing three events was a lot of pressure I was very nervous in hurdles because there were a lot of fast people but it was fun! Euan, Steven, Jonah, Troy Yr8 – It’s fun and enjoyable. Steven came second in 300m – it was hard! Troy won triple jump - it was long! Maddy & Nadine Yr10 – Long jump and bullseye bronze medallist – it’s been good! The Invincibles The year 7 boys football team managed to go through an entire season undefeated in both the Waltham Forest league and cup. The boys won the Waltham Forest Cup with a 7-3 victory over Walthamstow Academy. The cup run began in October with a comprehensive 10-1 win against Buxton. This was followed by a last minute winner in a closely contested match against Heathcote. The semi-final was at Chingford. Up until this point Chingford was also undefeated so something had to give. The game was played in difficult conditions as the ball often got stuck in puddles and the mud. When the final whistle blew Holy Family had won 4-2. The final took place at Douglas Eyre against Walthamstow Academy. Holy Family got off to a flying start and were 4-0 up after twenty five minutes. The Academy never gave up and made a determined comeback in the second half but in the end the boys ran out comfortable winners.

4.

The league matches included wins against Frederick Bremer, Rushcroft, and Walthamstow Academy along with draws against Highams Park and Heathcote. The 5 aside squad represented Waltham Forest in the South East of England section of the national 5 aside tournament and finished third in their section, narrowly missing out on a semi-final place. This was an impressive achievement as all the schools present were county or borough champions.

Creative Arts

Art Exhibition On Thursday 21st June the Art and Photography students showcased their phenomenal work at our annual exhibition. It was fantastic to see the range of creativity and mediums used to create pieces of art. Traditional paint and sketches alongside moving images, photography and costume designs were on display. Students, parents and staff enjoyed the exhibitions as well as Mark Clack from Wood Street Walls and Rocio from Sky Arts who also came to enjoy the artwork and discussed future collaboration projects. The art on displayed ranged from students in years 9 - 13. The following Monday our year 11 and 13 students displayed their work at Deliottes in central London. It is clear to see how much hardwork and dedication is takes to produce such fantastic pieces, thank you to the amazing Art Department, Mr Singh, Mr Madden and Miss Gernand, for pushing our students’ creativity.

Fractual Art Lab The INSPIRE programme is designed to get postgraduate research scientists into school classrooms. Run at Imperial College, London, one of the finest science universities in the world. INSPIRE aims to bridge the gap between STEM research and school science & mathematics by recruiting able researchers who are good communicators. As an INSPIRE partner school, Holy Family has played host to several postgraduate scientists during long placements, including our very own Mr

Keers! We’ve also had several STEM professionals coming in to communicate their expertise to Holy Family students in Science, Maths & Art lessons this year. These have included The Hidden Maths & Art of Nature, Chemistry of Sport, Navigation Using Astronomy, Spy Maths and How to Build an Electromagnetic Train. Dr Hidalgo from Imperial College, London is visited Holy Family science and art lessons in June to explore the hidden mathematics of the natural world. Pupils were using paint to make pictures of the neurones in brains!

School Trips

STEM Trip to Emirates Stadium The Emirates Stadium was our venue for the Teen Tech event. We made our way into the hall and found ourselves our tables. There were people from 52 different schools taking part in this event. It was so amazing to see all these people coming together to have fun and learn at the same time. While we were settling down, we were introduced to our guide, Hillary, who was spending her time as a placement (a placement is similar to an apprenticeship, however it happens during university and after you graduate you can take the job full time) at Cummins. She was going to be helping us with all of the activities and guiding us to the different rooms. The first activity we did was the ‘Invention Session.’In this session, we had come up with any idea which could benefit different parts of society. This could be crime, underwater life, plants and many more. In our group we round in a circle and collaborated and pitched in unique ideas. In the end we chose to do something that could help prevent crime. Then there were many parts in developing the idea. We had to design it; then we had to come up with marketing ideas and show how it would impact people. After this, some people from our group had to present

our idea in front of the different schools and to the person who running the session. Next, we went to the ‘Innovation Lounge.’ This was an area were we met many representatives from many companies and universities. There were people from Microsoft, Cummins, Queen Mary’s University and many more. It was so interesting to hear different career opportunities and things to achieve in scientific subjects and technology .At one of the stalls, we played ‘Tetris’ by tapping melons, each one controlled a different aspect of the game. It was so cool! We went back to the stall twice. We also collected free things to take back home, from each of the stalls we went to. Later, it was time for lunch. During this period of time, we got a certificate for ‘Best Tinker Idea.’ We also shared how the day was going with everyone else. Finally, the last activity of the day was the ‘Challenge Zone’. Our challenge was to create a life - sized geodome using different poles. We also had to make it so it matched the image given to us. This task required a lot of teamwork. When I say ‘a lot’, I mean A LOT!! We still got there in the end and it was so relieving when it was all over. Sadly, after this last activity we had to go home. All in all, I was so happy to take part in Teen Tech. It was a fun experience and learnt so much from it. I would like to come back there again. Natasha Johnson 8A Caitlin Tapely 8A Chloe Luz 8E

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ CITIZENSHIP AWARDS at Brentwood Cathedral We were delighted to attend the Catholic Schools’ Citizenship Awards at Brentwood Cathedral last week. Five students were honoured by Bishop Alan Williams: Naomi Bangolu, Angela Davis, Cameroon Joseph and Emily Morera who are part of the choir at Our Lady & St George parish and Lauren Smith for her contribution to Walthamstow’s film industry. It was a lovely ceremony, with almost all the schools in the Diocese represented.

Model United Nations Conference British Library Trip On Wednesday 6th June a group of Year 7 to Year 12 students visited the British Library. This was a reward for their participation in the Model United Nations Conference on 21st March. Students were able to view the topical and interactive exhibition on the Windrush and go into an exhibit focused on the life and times of James Cook. Paul Dimen, 8S reports: ‘I found it oddly leisurely which I did not expect and awfully fascinating. I was particularly struck by the map of Colonial America in the Windrush exhibition. However the James Cook exhibition was the most interesting. I loved the old maps of the world as well as learning about the era

of colonialism along with the sad suppression of native people’. Ms Osei and Ms Nordon were pleased to accompany such a curious and focused group to a wonderful place for learning. Haven’t been to the British Library? It is a three minute walk from Kings Cross Station and most things are free! If you are over 18 you can join as a reader. In the era of ‘fake news’ something so precious must be celebrated.

STEM Trip To The Crystal A Sustainable Cities Initiative Twenty of our year 8 girls were carefully chosen to participate in a trip giving them the opportunity to ‘walk’ in an engineer’s shoes. They had the chance to experience new and futuristic technologies such as VR sets, robots, drones and much more. They had the opportunity to learn about different career opportunities such as becoming an astronaut; they were given the chance to handle rocks from other planets, shooting stars and asteroids. The girls worked together as group and had to create their own apps to prevent food waste which unlocked their creativity and allowed them to revise and develop their ideas in order to come to a suitable conclusion. They also learnt to code and designed their own National Geographic front covers. This day allowed the girls to embrace their creativity and understand that they have no boundaries in life. Hopefully they have been inspired to pursue a STEM subject as a career.

Congratulations to our Senior Prefect Team of 2018/19

Our New Prefect Team! The process of achieving a place on the Senior Prefect team or being appointed head boy or girl starts with a detailed application form which determines whether previous experiences are suitable for a position in this prestigious team. Once the application forms have been read, all students are invited to a shortlisting event where they work in teams on a question posed by the sixth form team and present to their peers and staff. This event enables us to make a shortlist of contenders for the head boy and girl positions and make up the team of Senior Prefects. For the applicants for head boy and girl, the next stage involves a hustings assembly where they deliver a speech in front of their year group on a given topic. This is always a great opportunity to see the communication skills of the students and their ideas for the sixth form. Finally, the contenders have an in-tray task to complete and a formal interview with Dr Stone.

BTEC Celebration Event As a school we are inspired by the dedication, drive and achievements of our teachers and learners; which is why we acknowledge it officially each year through the BTEC Celebration Event in June. At this event, our students’ work is showcased and discovered, which allows the learners to present and show off their work to teachers and their peers. There is an opportunity to display their final productions including adverts from our Digital Creative Media students, productions by our Performing Arts students and research findings from our Business and Health & Social Care students. The event involved a ceremony which recognises and rewards students, teachers, and support staff for their exceptional achievements and guidance in vocational learning. It was a fantastic event which gives the students incredible motivation and hopefulness for the future. We wish all the students good luck in their next step into higher education at University or Apprenticeships. Mrs Belgrave Lead of BTEC qualifications

Holy Family x Department for Transport - PR Launch This term we were really excited to finally share the collaboration we have been doing with the Department for Transport for their new Think! Road Safety Campaign. In January some of our students were involved in filming a new video to be used on the Department for Transport’s website and launch of a new set of resources to educate young people about road safety. Up until May we were unable to share the resources or any photos until the live launch. The Department for Transport loved our students and asked if we would help officially launch the resources! This involved their production crew coming in to film us delivering the resources to a group of students. So Mr Singh and children’s TV presenter Sam Homewood delivered a road safety lesson to a group of Yr7s - this footage, along with interviews from Mr Singh and some of our Yr7s were then shared on numerous media outlets! Our Yr7s were exemplary and did us very proud. This was a great opportunity for them and us to be involved with. So no longer are the hedgehogs or the Green Cross Code Man the face of road safety - we are! This was a great experience to have our students involved with. All the resources are available to download from the Transport for London’s website.

First Give Yr9s have been working on their First Give projects this term. Each class had the task to research a social issue that effects our local community. They then developed presentations to bid for £1000 to donate to that charity. The students also had to raise funds for their chosen charity and on Wednesday evening presented to a panel of judges, friends, family and representatives from the charities.

10.

All of the presentations were outstanding and it was a very tough decision for the judges. The winning team was 9I and their chosen charity, Solace, who support women and children from domestic violence, were presented with the £1000 cheque! This day allowed the girls to embrace their creativity and understand that they have no boundaries in life. Hopefully they have been inspired to pursue a STEM subject as a career.

Academic & Events

The Limes Project This term a number of our year 7 and 8 students have been involved in a filmmaking workshop along with younger primary school pupils at The Limes community centre.

The project ran for six weeks and was lead by E17 Films and our year 12 Film Studies students. The young volunteers taught the younger students how to develop an idea for a short film, script and storyboard and then produce their very own film!

The final film was then showcased at Empire Cinema in Walthamstow to a sold out crowd! This was an excellent project to help younger students see the power of film and explore their creative talents. The Holy Family Sixth Form Film students were excellent!

The Trail Blazers The Trail Blazers project with Sophie Radcliff helps people develop a strong sense of self-worth, know how to problem solve and deal with tough times, and have the courage to live your own path and not follow others. And above all, uncover that true uniqueness in every person that is dying to come out and say hi to the world. We all deserve to rise and shine, but we can’t do it alone and sometimes we need a little help. That’s where the community aspect comes in. Together we are a force to be reckoned with! This term Year 9 and 10 girls completed a number of group task. They found inspirational quotes hidden in the trees. Then they went to our new prayer garden to share their quotes and what they mean. The extra part of the challenge will be to take on the advice given in the quotes!

Awards

STARS As we end the first year of the new star reward programme on Wiseman, we thought it would be a great time to evaluate it and celebrate the achievement of our young people. We decided to change the programme last year, based mainly on feedback from our then year 8 students (current year 9s). They wanted rewards that recognised achievement, enabled them to get more public recognition, a system where parents could be informed, rewards that were tangible, that included food and reward trips!! The system was developed as a direct result of what the students told us they wanted. The system as it currently stands is as follows: Star Star Star Star Star Star

1 2 3 4 5 6

Letter home Skip the lunch queue and letter home Free lunch and letter home Afternoon Tea and letter home Reward trip and letter home Entered for raffle prize and letter home

Stars after this all count towards the BIG star prize at the end of the year, which this year is being donated by Willmott Dixon, the company building our new Sports Hall facility!! Staff and students alike have bought into the new system and it’s lovely to see that students are not only getting rewarded for academic progress but for displaying characteristics that fulfill the Catholic ethos and helping them to become all rounded young people, ready for 21st century life. Students have been rewarded for charity work, offering to help wash up after afternoon tea, litter picking, being supportive of other students who may be experiencing difficulties or offering to help out their teachers. During the course of the year, we have held a huge number of afternoon teas, eaten a lot of cake and made a lot of hot chocolate! What has been lovely to see is students engaging in conversation with each other in a respectful way with students of other year groups. This year we have awarded almost 3000 stars! As always we will look for ways to develop and improve the rewards next year!
