Frederick Schultz Grier AIA, LEED AP www.frederickgrier.blogspot.com
For the last three years, Frederick has been working under Helmut Jahn, learning how to simplify the complexities of building systems, glazing details and vertical transportation systems, and consultant coordination for large, international projects. Prior to JAHN he attended Illinois Institute of Technology studying sustainable high-rise and wide span systems while attaining his Masters Degree in Architecture. His work experience ranges technically from design research and concept design, to construction management and site supervision; geographically from North America to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Frederick is a licensed architect in the State of Illinois, holding an NCARB Certificate for reciprocity in other domestic jurisdictions.
Doha Convention Center + Tower Doha, Qatar JAHN The Doha Convention Center and Tower consists of two built expressions. A vertical 550 meter Tower rising with an elegant yet dramatic taper, topped with a structural helix, and a horizontal 300,000 square meter Convention Center consisting of a floating roof punctuated by circular skylights throughout. Amid the ongoing construction of DCC+T, the client requested functional and programmatic changes to the west end of the Convention Center. Frederick was part of the architecture team charged with redesigning the Grand Lobby, Multi-Function Hall and Ballroom, along with the supportive spaces (pre-function spaces, restaurant, administrative offices, restrooms, prayer rooms, etc.) Frederick’s various roles include development and coordination of floor plans, building elevations, interior elevations, sections and reflected ceiling plans. The complexity of this project requires significant coordination between various building systems consultants (Mechanical, Structural, Lighting, Interior Design, etc.) He is also responsible for the vertical transportation design and detail drawings. Frederick worked extensively on the production of various physical model CAD files and presentation drawings for workshops, meetings, and client presentations. Role: Architect Phases: Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents May 2011 - February 2012; June 2012 - Current
Shanghai International Financial Center Shanghai, China Murphy/Jahn Architects At the heart of Shanghai’s Century Plaza in the financial district, Shanghai In-
ternational Financial Center is currently under-construction. Composed of three individual towers for the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE), the China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFE), and the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (CSDCC), the beauty of this project lies in the powerfully connected, unified complex addressing the three unique corporate images as iconic beacons of finance. Frederick’s architectural roles included development and detail drawings for the various feature stairs and escalators in the three tower complex. He also produced interior finishes rendered elevations and plans, as well sprinkler layouts for the CFFE tower. Role: Architect Phase: Detail and Design Development February 2012 - June 2012
Nanjing Tower and Podium Nanjing, China Murphy/Jahn Architects The Vertical and Horizontal gestures of Nanjing Tower and Podium emerge as independent sculptural forms, integrated with cutting edge structural engineering and building skins. The composition is provocative yet minimal. Each buildings’ form and shell are designed for the highest efficiency both functionally and aesthetically, resulting in a new standard of transparency, ecology, comfort and use. Frederick worked primarily on the development and coordination of the podium floor plans including structural, facade, egress, life-safety, and mechanical systems consultant coordination. He assisted in form generation and structural tube layout for the Podium using Grasshopper and Rhino software. Frederick was also responsible for vertical transportation coordination for the tower and podium including elevator matrix and general stair configurations; as well as the development and coordination of the reflected ceiling plans. Role: Architect Phase: Schematic Design, Design Development August 2010 - May 2011
