Preface

2016 was a great year for us. It was the first full year for the FSLCI, which we started with our first edition of the Global Life Cycle Community Survey. The survey provided us with great insights into what we should be doing in going forward and resulted for example in the launch of the FSLCI Webinar Series. In addition to the survey and the webinars, we further enhanced our online platform and introduced new features, such as public profiles and a members map. We also used the beginning of the year to work with the Board on identifying a number of projects and ideas that we would like to implement over the next few years. And while we have started to implement some, others will take more time to be realized. Much like in 2015, we presented the FSLCI at various conferences around the world. We were also delighted to become an ISO TC 207 / SC 5 Liaison Member and have signed additional strategic partnerships with many national Life Cycle networks. 2016 was a year of learning and taking little steps towards realizing our mission of spreading Life Cycle Innovation globally. We would like to thank all of you who have and continue to support us and we look forward to continuing our journey! Jim, Guido & Philip

NGO Government

As a community organization, our members, matter most to us! We are happy to inform you that we were able to grow our community to a total of 133 members, of which 67 joined the FSLCI as new members in 2016. We are also really happy about our first two organisational members that joined us in 2016:

Our Partners

As part of our strategy to facilitate communication and collaboration across the globe, we work closely with a number of national partner networks that support us in realizing our mission and vision. In 2016 the following life cycle networks joined our regional networks partners program: The Indonesian Life Cycle Assessment Network (ILCAN), the RED Colombiana de Ciclo de Vida, the Red Iberoamericana de Ciclo de Vida (RICV) as well as with the The Institute of Life Cycle Assessment, Japan (ILCAJ). In addition to our partnerships with regional networks, the FSLCI joined ISO as a Liaison Member of TC 207 / SC 5.

Activities & Projects

Community Survey

In order to better tailor our services to the needs of our members, but as well to those of the global life cycle community, we conducted our first Community Survey in March 2016. More than 250 respondents provided great insights that helped us better define our priorities and resulted for example in the launch of the FSLCI Webinar Series. Survey results can be accessed here: https://fslci.org /community-survey-2016results/ FSLCI Š 2017 | 12

Public Profiles

In July 2016 we launched our public member profiles along with the members map. Members now have the opportunity to present themselves through their public profiles and thus become more visible for those looking for expertise. Because we value our members’ privacy, the decision, which details of and if a profile becomes public, is up to them. By default, members are listed on our members directory, but member profiles will remain accessible only to FSLCI members – unless the setting is changed.

Webinar Series & Library

In August 2016 we launched the FSLCI Webinar Series. Since then, monthly webinars have been arranged on various subjects. Webinars are given by FSLCI members for FSLCI members and on average 20 members participate in our live webinars. All our webinars are recorded and available to our members in our Webinar Recording Library. We would like to thank everyone for making our webinar series such a success!

Conferences

LCA Case Study Symposium 20. – 22.09. Montpellier, France

At the end of September we participated in the 22nd SETAC Europe LCA Case Study Symposium in Montpellier. Organized by SETAC Europe with the support of the local organizing team from ELSA, the Case Study Symposium with some 250 participants was a great opportunity to engage with the research community. We were present with a booth, which gave us the opportunity to not only meet a number of our existing members in person, but also served well to inform the wider Life Cycle Community about us.

LCA XVI 27. – 29.09. Charleston, USA

The LCA XVI conference was organized by our partner organization the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA) in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. In addition to our well-visited booth, we gave a presentation on the FSLCI and why we focus on communication and collaboration. The conference was yet again a great opportunity for us to engage with our North American members and win some new members for the FSLCI.

Ecobalance 2016 03. – 06.10. Kyoto, Japan

The Ecobalance conference was a highly successful event for the FSLCI. Organizers of the conference provided a rebate for FSLCI members and we signed our partnership agreement with the Institue of Life Cycle Assessment Japan (ILCAJ) at the beginning of the conference. In addition to our booth, we also organized a well-attended session around communication and collaboration, as well as our General Assembly where three new members of the Board were elected into office.

ILCM 2016 17. – 18.10. New Delhi, India

Following the Ecobalance conference we travelled to India to take part in the Indian Life Cycle Management (ILCM) conference. The ILCM was established in 2011 and has been organized every year by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) since then. The FSLCI was again highly visible during the conference, thanks to the ILCM’s organizer Ms Sanjeevan Bajaj, who had served as our interim President of the Board of Directors in 2015. In addition, our CFOO Philip Strothmann gave a presentation on “Collaboration and Communication as Essential Tools for Mainstreaming Life Cycle Thinking ”.

LCA Food 2016 19. – 21.10. Dublin, Ireland

The Food LCA conference was organized in 2016 at the United College of Dublin. LCA Food is an international conference which focuses especially on new developments in life cycle assessment in the context of agrifood systems and takes place every two years at different places around the world. Due to a cooperation with our friends from the DIL (German Institute of Food Technologies), we were able to share a booth with them and thus had the chance to inform interested participants about the FSLCI and our activities. The conference was a good opportunity for us to engage with a new audience.

avnir 2016 08. – 09.11. Lille, France

In November, our partner organisation in France, [avnir], organized the 5th edition of their conference in Lille. [avniR] by cd2e is a collaborative platform and a resource center that initiates and supports the economic transition of sectors throughout new development models based on Life Cycle Thinking. During the conference we were present with a booth and organized a session on “Collaborer et communiquer pour mieux penser Cycle de Vie”. The session provided space for a number of interesting presentations around communicating Life Cycle Thinking to a broader audience. It also provided us with the opportunity to present the FSLCI to a large audience.

Outlook

For 2017 we look forward to consolidating and growing our membership and building new partnerships. But we also plan to organize a number of workshops in line with our objective to engage with a broader audience about the usefulness of taking a life cycle perspective. In addition, we will continue to engage with our members on making our community platform a more interactive place and thus more valuable tool. We will add features such as the Critical Review Directory and plan to launch our Life Cycle Teaching Material Library as part of our effort to engage with research groups and academic stakeholders. With our recently launched Working Groups on Education and ISO we have started to create a space for our members to become more engaged and we look forward to working with our community on promoting life cycle thinking and the use of life cycle information globally. We would like to thank all our members for their support and look forward to continue engaging with you in 2017! Jim, Guido & Philip
