FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Editor’s Notes It has been another year for FINA, and it will be us 29th that committed ourselves, and conclude our year with this book – fleeting yet enthralling. Looking back at the long way that we’ve come as the Executive Committee of The Finance Students’ Society, the book not only signals the end of our office term, but also reviews and revisits details of past events, while revealing experiences and memories within responsibilities in FINA. This year is unpredictable – the extent of pandemics and corresponding regulations, and the only in-person semester in two years. Despite the circumstances, we are grateful to have major events such as Inauguration Ceremony, Orientation Series resumed and be held in-person with satisfactory responses, and physical copies of booklets could be printed and witnessed by attendees of separate functions. Within the bitterly cold winter, we are keen to serve our members with devotion, and illuminate with warmth like the apricity you would feel during unforeseen breezes. With some of the previous year’s functions getting vacuumed by regulations, this year has been nothing short of exploration. From inviting guests to instinctive responses during live events, balancing on a rope was never smooth-sailing. Documented with insightful forewords, guest interviews, event highlights, your voices, and words from the 29th Executive Committee, this book is the path we walked along this year, and the course to be remembered. The Finance Yearbook is never just to conclude a year’s work with dull words; instead, it will be a key recalling what has happened throughout the office term, with bittersweet experiences and heart-warming moments. Earnestly, my appreciation on behalf of FINA29 to everyone who has supported us on our way here, which made this arduous yet fruitful year meaningful. I genuinely wish you to enjoy the book, maybe you will recall back the long-lasting memories within FINA, and perhaps after years, the rare flips of this book would still stir up the never-fading recollections.

CHAIRPERSON’S WORDS
Evenson Lam Chairperson The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022
After a year of office filled with ups and downs at The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, the expedition of the 29th Session is officially coming to an end. We are profoundly honored to serve as the Executive Committee of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022. With the unstable and long-standing situation of the pandemic, this year was destined to be challenging. In particular, in light of the closing down of a majority of the facilities inside the university, we were left with no choice but to break the mold and organize our functions off-campus, including the 29th Inauguration Ceremony and the Orientation Series 2021. Be that as it may, in every crisis, there’s an opportunity; we did manage to offer quite a unique experience to our participants. We understand that there were many imperfections and room for improvements throughout those events, but we believe that is what it takes to move forward, and at the same time, we evaluate and thrive to uplift our standards. After all, our mission is to connect our members with one another and the dynamic finance industry in this social distancing world. No one arrives at a moment like this without the help of a great many people. Thus, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our members, advisors, mentors, faculty, and other Society connections, who generously supported us throughout the year. Most of all, I would like to extend my utmost appreciation to my cabinet. The year was a tedious marathon for us, yet we persevered and supported each other alongside. Those hardships will only make us stronger and unified. Despite all the disputes and friction, we all have mutual interests in serving our members and maintaining professionalism. Our similarities bring us to a common ground, and our differences allow us to be fascinated by each other. We are not striving for oneness but harmony. These values and our chemistry are what I cherish the most in us, and I am truly honored to be part of the team. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Sub-committee members for their immense contributions and support in the Mentorship Program 2021 and Finance Festival 2021. The sub-functions could not have been organized smoothly without their dedicated commitments. As the end of the 29th Session is approaching, I am strongly convinced that FINASTRA, The Elected Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2022-2023, can inherit the ongoing legacy and carry on the missions of the Society. I genuinely wish The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, and the 30th Cabinet an exceptional and fruitful year ahead.

Founding Partner / Fund Manager LW Asset Management Advisors Limited
FOREWORD FROM OUR ADVISOR
Dream big. When I was 26, then years ago, I dreamed of having my asset management company in my 40s. Fortunately, I achieved my goal fifteen years earlier. Currently, I am running LW Asset Management, a Hong Kong based boutique fund house, with two partners since 2019. It is not a straight line between your current position and the goal. Here’s the magic: find yourself the passion, and you have to work super hard. Your dream is only a dream until you make your first step. No matter which industry you want to get into, you should believe in yourself. Meanwhile, you should prepare well for grabbing any opportunities. You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great. Time is free, but it’s priceless. Use it wisely. You may follow your heroes’ path at the beginning. Instead of following others, I believe the best hero is the five years future of you. That’s the way you love and won’t regret it, and this hero will keep you chasing and reach a new high. COVID is a new page to the world, to all of us. Will Hong Kong still be an international financial hub? YES. It relies on us. Being an international financial hub, I believe Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is an essential element nowadays. ESG is a new common standard all around the financial industry. Small changes can become great, and a seemingly inconsequential act can have tremendous consequences. As Elon Musk shared in an interview, “if somebody is doing something that is useful to the rest of society, I think that’s a good thing. It doesn’t have to change the world. If you’re doing something that has high value to people...if it’s just a little game or, you know, the system improvement in photo sharing or something, if it has a small amount of good for a large number of people, I think that’s fine. Stuff doesn’t need to change the world just to be good.” We can do extraordinary things.

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR
Prof. Lynn PI
Associate Professor of Business Education Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance
1. How did the resurgence of pandemics affect you and your colleagues as in general (teaching/ academically)? It is quite disappointing to have the pandemic resurge again. When we could have live classes on campus during the previous Fall Semester and were preparing for in-person teaching in Spring, the reappearance of pandemics has forced us back to real-time online mode. Last semester was certainly sort of ‘normal’ when various live seminars and department meetings would be held, and I could see my colleagues very often. The sudden halt was definitely far from ideal, but life goes on, and our previous experience tackling COVID has greatly smoothened the transition process to online mode under government regulations. Still, we miss the interactions with colleagues and other staff members, and it feels better to be in the classroom chatting with students. 2. Would you suggest students try and explore the volatile yet opportunistic market now due to the conflict happening in Europe? I would not put it this way. Rather than suggesting students try and dive into the market, for now, it would be better for students to take this as a lesson. The market is volatile, and you are not confident about what will happen next. Students should learn to build their stable portfolio, observe the market closely to find possible opportunities. My thought is that the financial market is just like anything else. Although I don’t expect students to have professional-level insights, if you have interests and are prepared, act ahead of the others, as following the market would already be too late to observe the changes. Be well-prepared and try to follow a specific sector, and you could certainly act with haste. But for now, I do not think there are that many opportunities for students to grasp necessarily. You are also not required to put real money into the market, maybe try building a portfolio of your own and observe the market to see if it rhymes with your predictions. Again, if you are interested in investing in the financial market(s), follow the market(s) and economic conditions closely, and respective opportunities will arise.
3. What are your opinions on the trending topics in the industry, especially standards such as CSR/ESG? And how should students grasp this knowledge outside the classes for necessary insights? The world is changing fast, and you should not expect to learn everything from the classroom, where classics and more principled knowledge will be taught. For newer trends, sometimes we do offer courses covering those topics. Still, if there are none and you are indeed interested in knowing more about them, the pandemic has opened up loads of learning opportunities with lots of resources waiting for you to explore. Simply browse for the knowledge online, and enrich yourselves with free materials available, especially during these times. CSR is a topic that steadily evolves in relation to corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, sustainable investments, etc. When the concepts are getting more mature, and we have come to ESG with more recognitions, the ideas are more to stay rather than just being a prevailing trend nowadays, with potential impacts. If students are interested in these topics even without the prescribed courses, the vast majority of online resources should be more than enough for their thirst. We often say “life-long learning”, as being a well-educated person could have massive advantages: self-learning with the right approach, ability to criticize information, data-processing skills, and many more, enabling you to develop these learning habits on your own. Just like the new degree HKUST offers starting this Fall, the BSc in Sustainable and Green Finance (SGFN) has its Green Finance concept as a part of ESG. When you think of the financial aspect, Green Finance could be a massive factor for a company when making operating decisions. Its degree of execution could also affect the company’s valuation, and its implementations could also broaden its financing channels. These standards are essential during companies’ considerations, and you could undoubtedly find a medium to build your insights. 4. In this office year’s newsletter, we’ve briefly introduced cryptocurrencies and blockchains. Certainly, most students have already dived deep into the territory. What are your thoughts on these newly emerged investment mediums? I think these are interesting subjects in general, and you should probably look into them. Instead of knowing the components in structured ways, a good understanding of the nature of such assets is also essential. More accurately, any kind of investment would involve risks, and you would have to consider all the risks investing in these newly emerged types of assets. The problem with all these new assets is the presence of too many myths and mixed information, and you should not put your money in until you realize what they truly are – since you don’t need to invest in a somewhat opaque medium yet.
THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
The situation varies, and timings are prominent as well. Since most assets are somewhat volatile, you will need to have your own assessment criteria. For noticeable assets like oil/crude, their price changes are easily predictable or noticed, just like the recent crisis, which has driven Europe’s oil prices high. Still, assets’ prices are subjected to other factors, namely their imports, the extent of explorations, etc. If you don’t know what moved during the crisis, it is dangerous and high risk to grasp a relatively low return, and the effect has not been justified. If I don’t understand an asset well enough, I probably won’t put my money in. That does not imply that the asset is not worth investing in; the action is just my own decision and opinion. But if there is an expert with sufficient knowledge in that field approving, it might be a rather good investment. 5. It is assured students have to be equipped with sufficient skills (especially finance-majoring students). What would be your suggestions on the go-to abilities for students to grasp necessarily? I think analytical skills are critical, especially for finance-majoring students who have to deal with many quantitative topics; the analytical and reasoning capability will raise their importance. Besides those, the significance of communication skills cannot be understated. The skill will differentiate a business-majoring student from other disciplines like science, which does not necessarily require good communication, nor will they emphasize such skills. However, when you step into the business field, communication becomes essential to explain and help others understand ideas. For all business majors, no matter if you are majoring in accounting or finance, you’ll still need to be equipped with such skills, not to mention students majoring in marketing/management. After all, for students majoring in finance, a relatively quantitative subject, logical thinking would be another great tool to help. 6. Do you have any words for the 29th Executive Committees? It is a very tough period, and your perseverance has helped you overcome the worst. Unfortunately, the situation is still volatile and challenging, even for seasoned veterans like me. For younger students who have faced a demanding environment, perseverance is as necessary as a good spirit, and your confidence is the key to still do well in the hard times. My appreciation for your commitment throughout the year. Good luck with your fruitful journey after resigning from your position, and I hope to see all of you on campus as well!
INTERVIEW WITH GUESTS Chief Executive Officer
Albert Wong
Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation
1. Since your initial bachelors and work are related to innovation and technology to a small extent, what was your initiative in joining this innovation and technology industry? And what has been your aspiration in the industry? To be honest, when I graduated with an engineering degree, there wasn’t much to talk about innovation and technology in Hong Kong at all, until recent years. You may ask your parents or people who have experienced the old days before, innovation and technology have never been an essential factor for our economy until the recent, let’s say, 7-8 years ago, we would talk about mostly low-tech stuff. For me, my job after graduation has mostly been outside of Hong Kong, I was doing different things in many fields inside different companies in the technology sector, and they are not that related to innovative technologies in Hong Kong. I would say innovation and technology are not a profession by themselves, and it is pervasive in everybody. When we talk about innovation and technology, we will mention research and development, not just research. If you think of research as someone inventing something new, that would only be partial compared to our goals – with our focus mainly on the development side, so it is about bringing an invention or idea into a commercialized product, something that can generate revenue.
THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU
11

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Like it or not, at the end of the day, our job is to make it commercialized and make money, rather than doing research in universities’ labs; to make it part of our economy. Thus we talk about innovation and technology as pervasive as possible in every aspect of Hong Kong, rather than just a group of elites doing research and development, which is not what we wanted. When there are already elites like Professors or scientists in universities doing the same type of stuff, let them do it. Our job is not just staying in the lab and discovering new molecules, but making the inventions into commercialized products, and that’s why it is pervasive. 2. What are your takeaways from different stages of the years of work (e.g., from the beginning when joining the industry)? Was there any sort of internships during your university studies to better prepare you for your career? I have no idea when we have started working in the old days. My whole purpose is to survive, find a satisfactory job, make good money, etc. That applies to a lot of the younger generations, maybe you guys have more dreams and other things to aim for, but in my days is about survival, finding a job that I could work with, and things that I could do well. I just worked hard, and when the next opportunity came, I would take on it, and that would be the early part of my career. I found a job that I really liked – working in an oil field. It’s challenging, and I had made some money, in exchange for a harsh offshore working environment in the middle of the sea for five years, before I switched to a multinational technology firm in aftersales positions. Somehow in the later stages of my career, in my forties, I spent my time in a big company called General Electric, and I got the opportunities to try out many different things, including M&A, investment analysis, etc. Like I said in my LinkedIn post, I didn’t really plan my career, and instead, I just kept working hard, and things happened. One of the examples was when I was working for GE, I spent almost fifteen years in it among twelve different job types, but I never looked for the next opportunity, things just happened. I know by saying that won’t help, but my only aim was just to work hard, and grab the next opportunity when I could. As engineering students, we had to have internships every summer. Again, I did different things: three months in the electrical and mechanical services department, two months in Hong Kong Electric, and I hated both jobs. Then I told myself, I would not join these big companies in Hong Kong when I graduate, as I felt that it was already a well-laid out career that only people planning for their retirements would go and do them. Actually, I would be sort of lying if I said I have never planned my career, since I wanted to do something outside of Hong Kong, and do something more significant. That was why I ventured to do things not locally, because I really disliked the internships in Hong Kong’s big establishments.
Prof. Lynn PI
Associate Professor of Business Education Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance
On that note, I think having an internship, and having a taste of “what’s going on” in the middle of your study makes a lot of sense; either you liked it, or you hated it. You have to know your preferences, just like what I did, identifying I was not interested and would not do those types of jobs. Had I not done the internships, I would probably go into the jobs that I hated, and I would not be here today. Either positive or negative, there’s a way for you to figure it out, so I would suggest you try. 3. How did (the resurgence of) the pandemic challenge you and perhaps the park? How did your corporation and/or the whole industry adapt to go with the flow? Obviously, the pandemic is a big thing for Hong Kong, and the world. A lot of the startups and companies did fail during the time, and there were also new companies coming in. And that’s what we do, we encourage people to start their company and try out new things. I would not say that’s easy in any way, but there are different opportunities at different times, and pandemics would mean big troubles and lots of opportunities for many people as well. I strongly believe that, particularly in the innovation and technology sector, it is a matter of how you adapt, pivot, and find a new way out of the existing things. We don’t just do research or encourage people to stay in the lab and invent stuff, and the world won’t work that way for you to sell your products instantly. The world works so that when the world needs a certain thing, I will make myself adapt to that, and you will have to have that kind of agility. That is what we call “innovation” not “invention”, the difference being creating or buying what the world needs. Going back to the question, the situation is complicated for us innovation technology people. Yet, it also spells opportunity for a lot of them, including the new items like test kits, diagnostic robotics, and virtual meeting applications, to name but a few. Many new things are coming out from the pandemics, and the most important thing is to pivot, adapt to the situation, and make the best out of it. 4. Did HKSTP have more resources to strengthen their business, and provide more opportunities for their wider exposure? That is exactly what we do, and this is why we exist. We don’t just exist to provide space, but we are here to support. Like running an incubator program, where anyone wanting to start their own company could join, as long as you have a good idea for the business, we would help you to develop your products and services, find your customers, raise funds, or even going back and rethink about your business plan.
THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU
13
14
FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
We have about 500 companies inside our incubator, but getting in is never easy. You would have to go through a panel with a good business plan and think about what you want to achieve, what your venture looks like, and many more. And I am going to warn you that despite my suggestion to start a company, you have to think about it as starting one is really risky, it’s not just a university assignment, but somewhat risky as nine out of ten startups fail. But we would help you to maneuver through the difficulties with our tools, connections, training, everything. 5. What is your overview of Hong Kong’s future innovation development? And as your team keeps nurturing talents to the scale now, what has been your propulsion for staying in this position and committing even more? In my opinion, Hong Kong has been very late to the technology game. People were often asked how we would do compared with Singapore or Shenzhen, and I will tell you that we are behind quite a bit. For R&D weights in countries’ percentage GDP, it’s only ~1% for Hong Kong, compared to Korea and Israel, both having well over 4% with this figure. You can see that the country’s economy is very different if you have R&D spending so high, and China is about 2.2% overall, but for cities like Shenzhen, it’s likely to be 6-7%. Thus, we have a lot to catch up not just in this figure, but the R&D in general. Why do we think we can still do that? It’s because we have a solid university research basis, we have four universities that are ranked top 50 in the world, and when you compare it with Guangdong or southern China, there’re no universities that can compete with those four. The problem is, like I have said in the beginning, we have our scientists and professors, but they are sort of living in their own world. They do not specialize nor implement commercialization. And what we need to do is to help them find ways to commercialize, and it’s likely probable with Hong Kong’s good investment environment and great market, talents, and policies. Although we are behind, we have to take on technology and innovation as our future. Gone are the days when “low-tech makes you money”, and we cannot rely on them because the world will be high-tech. And besides, it’s not a matter of choice, we have to survive using technologies, and we have the government’s policies, universities’ talents, infrastructures, and almost everything to support the progression. The only thing we need to do is create that culture in society, to enable everyone to get into the sector and brace that as a part of our future. We have all the elements needed, but it takes a whole society to work together.
Prof. Lynn PI Associate Professor of Business Education Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance
6. What are your suggestions and words of wisdom for us, the current generation that will step in to the industry in just a few years? I will also add another thing for you to think about. I’ve talked to many university students and graduates about this, and to me, this is very important. As a student in secondary school, you will study and learn, people teach you, and you learn from your teacher. When you get to the university, there is still teaching going on, and you will still learn, but you mostly learn by yourself, and you need to figure out what’s going on. When you graduate, and work either by joining big companies or starting your own, nobody is there, and has an obligation to teach you anything. Learning is not an objective, and instead is the result. You should not go and work for a company with the hope that I am going to learn something. When you work for a company, you should not go and ask them to teach you how to do things, and you develop yourself because you contribute. I think you see the gradual chain from secondary school to university, which already contains very different types of learning. And then when you graduate and start working, nobody will teach you anything. Even though you may work for one of the “Big 4”, it seems like they are teaching you a certain thing, and actually, they’re not, they are utilizing you. They train you because you have a utility function; you are contributing to them as a trainee, they’re not schools. So, you have to change your mindset from secondary to university, and then to society. Then, with that kind of mentality in mind, you know you have to work hard and keep learning yourself, because nobody will teach you anything. Again, think about it. When someone hires you, what would they want from you? They wouldn’t want to train you, they want you to do things for them, versus you as a trainee wishing to learn something, and you have to think of your employers’ objective as well. From secondary school to university and working, you have to adjust your mindset, which is how you develop. You will have to learn by doing it.

INTERVIEW WITH GUESTS Chief Financial Officer
Aldous Mak
Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation
1. Since your initial bachelors and work are related to innovation and technology to a small extent, what was your initiative in joining this innovation and technology industry? And what has been your aspiration in the industry? I think one of the major reasons that I join HKSTP is because of its mission. I believe for the ones working in the Science Park, we all have a mission that we want to do something for Hong Kong. We all believe that innovation and technologies will be the future of Hong Kong, and will be beneficial to the next generation, that’s the main factor that drives me into joining the Science Park. Of course, as you have mentioned that my professional background does not necessarily match the features of HKSTP, my aim is just to utilize my profession and try to help with the developments of this sector.
2. What are your takeaways from different stages of the years of work (e.g., from the beginning when joining the industry)? Was there any sort of internships during your university studies to better prepare you for your career? From my side, my experience was quite different from Albert’s. Since I was quite clear about what I was looking for, so even before I graduated, I knew my aim was to pursue my career in the accounting profession. And that’s why after I have graduated, I worked very hard and tried to get qualified. In fact, I can say that I am the first batch of accounting major graduates from UST to get qualified under the HKICPA, which had a different name back then. I have also started a good career by joining PwC, one of the “Big 6” at that time, and they provided excellent training to juniors, with me staying there for roughly eight years. Then I moved to a consultancy firm in Shenzhen, and I moved back a while after. Back then, I got the opportunity to work for Hong Kong Disneyland. I was also part of the opening team, which, to me, is also one in a lifetime that I have contributed to Hong Kong, and to the important tourism industry back then. And that is quite similar to why I have decided to join Science Park later on, because I really wanted to contribute to Hong Kong society and have something in my career that I can tell my next generation. Right now, when I look at Hong Kong Disneyland, I can tell them that I have contributed to the establishment of such a park, similar to the Science Park. After all, my career was relatively straightforward at the beginning, as a professional accountant. Back in my time, we would have to look for those kinds of opportunities ourselves, instead of the better and increased frequencies of resources now. I also had some summer jobs and found a job at a local accounting firm to try and get some experience about what public accounting was back then, to help me think through my prospect, and whether I really wanted to join such a profession. Back then, we need to do them by ourselves, and there was not much help from the market. So, it is nice to be at the present stage where dozens of job opportunities and various experiences are remotely available. Like Albert has mentioned about his twelve roles in his fifteen years of GE, my fifteen years in Disneyland have also got me 7-8 roles in total. It is important that you need to get different kinds of experiences, to get different exposures under several occupations, and you could get to know about yourself more, what you want to look for along the way.

3. How did (the resurgence of) the pandemic challenge you and perhaps the park? How did your corporation and/or the whole industry adapt to go with the flow? I think the advantage of us is that we represent the government to a certain degree, to help those kinds of companies, and that’s why we got some resources from the government, and the mandate to help out those companies. 4. Did HKSTP have more resources to strengthen their business, and provide more opportunities for their wider exposure? We also provide some kinds of soft skills training, like presentation skills, how to write a proposal, these kinds of skills to the incubated teams, to help them sell their business plan better. And I think the connection is essential, particularly for the Science Park, because we are creating the opportunity. Think about that we have 1000 companies inside the Park, without the pandemics, we would definitely organize get-together events that could group all these companies together, for them to mingle and topics to discuss, social life, etc. We are creating such an environment for these companies to exchange ideas, that can really help them develop their business. And that’s why we have also built InnoCell, which is quite similar to a university dormitory. We allow some companies inside the Park to rent the space inside the cell for a short term, or even for years, and this is the lively things we want to create for them, and a way for us to foster mingling, create an opportunity for them to group together and share their opinions. 5. What is your overview of Hong Kong’s future innovation development? And as your team keeps nurturing talents to the scale now, what has been your propulsion for staying in this position and committing more? Albert’s point is right, we do have pretty good infrastructures, universities’ resources, and government policies. Unfortunately, we have to also deal with the loss of talents in recent years, and we do see that migrations are developing to be a problem for Hong Kong despite universities’ continuous elite outputs. From the government’s standpoint, we also need to find ways to attract more talents back to Hong Kong, or even overseas talents to come and stay in Hong Kong. Of course, the problem was made even more complicated with the status of the pandemic. Still, I hope that when the pandemics are over or majorly relieved, we will have the corresponding government policies to attract talents back to Hong Kong, and we can see the future.
Prof. Lynn PI Associate Professor of Business Education Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance
6. What are your suggestions and words of wisdom for us, the current generation that will step in to the industry in just a few years? As we said earlier, because you’re young, you will definitely have your opportunity cost low. You should try different things, since the economic conditions and market situations now are far different from those in our ages, and your living standard, everything is just much better than ours back then. So, you have the luxury to try different things, which would be my tip for you. Don’t be scared, like what Albert has mentioned, you can even start with your own company and start exploring different things. Let’s say you are majoring in Finance, then you can still have lots of opportunities in the finance sector like FinTech, NFTs, etc. There are so many different new things that you can try and explore, or even set your own standards. Try, try it out, because you don’t need to set a boundary for yourself, talk to different people and then try different things, then you will know what you really want for the longer term. When I conduct interviews with those fresh graduates and younger generations, they always say that, “I like your company because your company can offer here and there.” But they missed out on a big thing, that how they could contribute to the company, and that’s the very key thing you want to present successfully, and maybe think about how you could contribute to society, the organization and company that you like. Having the right mindset is also very important for being in the finance sector. When you work for banks or even investment banks, “why do they hire you?”, because you can build the connection for them to get business. It’s very simple, if you can make business deals for the organization, then you have the value; if you are just using their resources, they will probably throw you out, and that’s the harsh reality of the world. Carry two things when you get to a new job: your intelligence and your heart. If you have the heart, you will try to find a way and get to know more even if you’re new to the stuff, you can do your own research, talk to relevant people, gain more experience, and it continues. That’s the passion you need to have, accompanied by your intelligence, and the knowledge you are equipped with when you get your degree, you will know what to do next even if you did not get exposed to that kind of thing before.

PROMOTION PERIOD
FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
”
In sync with the commencement of the 2021 Spring Semester, the Promotion Period and the Semester have both initiated on 1st February, 2021. Aiming to introduce the Nominated Cabinet to members and the community, the three-week interval has also allowed the Cabinet to acquire necessary event-organizing skills and strengthen the linkages among Cabinet members. With the relieving pressure from diminishing COVID-19 cases, physical booths with limitations were held for two weeks to distribute souvenirs and display decorations to meet members in person while attracting numerous students to the booth and interacting with us. Besides physical booth, promotional videos and Instagram lives were regularly uploaded and held respectively, as well as the most anticipated lucky draws, to further raise attention towards the Cabinet further. As a fresh new cabinet, FINAPRICITY, The Nominated Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022, it was with great importance that we could grasp appreciated support from members and familiarize other HKUST students with our promotion.
Particular themes are chosen for each week of our Promotion Period, namely Expedition, Romance, and Carnival, to match the mental journey of the Cabinet and Valentine’s Day during the Period. There are also specific decorations prepared to match each theme in rotation, such as the lighthouse for Expedition, and the Ferris Wheel for Romance. For online promotion, there were three promotion videos, several live streams, and interactive polling series in total for raising our recognition, especially during the later stages of week 3, where only online promotions are available. Through the hardfought journey, we hope to show our members the objectives we hold, and our competence to take over the position with responsibility as the potential Executive Committee. Our last Instagram post on 19th February marked the end of the Promotion Period, and a two-day Polling Period starting on 25th February was held via Qualtrics. Thanks to the support from our members, FINAPRICITY was declared as The Elected Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022 on the 1st of March. THE 29TH
INAUGURATION CEREMONY As the first event FINA29 has organized, the Inauguration Ceremony is of great importance – to show all parties our determination on undertaking the responsibilities of being an Executive Committee member, and as an observant on our office year’s commencement. The Inauguration Ceremony marked the beginning of our devotion and is witnessed by Past Executive Committee members, guests, and external Society parties every year. We Executive Committee will strive to organize a fruitful ceremony that showcases our passion and perseverance, to pass on the values of this whole-hearted community. The theme of the 29th Inauguration Ceremony is “Finis Coronat Opus”, a phrase meaning “the end crowns the work” in Latin. “The crown needs not always to be tangible, but you must work towards those that are meaningful.” We hope to show our dedication to finish everything that we started, never do things by halves, never surrender when facing difficulties, not to mention our commitment to perform all tasks in detail and comprehensively. We are committing to fulfill the duties of the Executive Committee of the Society and are willing to devote our time and effort to strive for the best for the members of our Society by all means.
The end crowns the work.
The importance of a wonderful initiation cannot be understated, and we have committed most for the first event. Under challenging times, a physical venue was still found for the smooth-sailing preparation of the Ceremony. The Youth Square is a place for youngsters to showcase their dreams and ambitions, and it is also a place for our session to spread our wings and continue the legacy, emerge from the bitter situation, and bring forth warmness to fellow members. The Inauguration is an instance to showcase our commitment and dedication truly. The Ceremony was successfully held on 9th June 2021, and we are very honored to have roughly 200 participants despite the regulations, with distinguished guests from various business sectors and student representatives from tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, to witness the official handover of duty from the 28th to the 29th Executive Committee. The Ceremony has reached its highlight at the heartfelt oath-taking ceremony. Still, the guests and other participants have also been able to grasp appreciated insights through splendid speeches by our Honourable Guest Speakers: Professor Lynn Pi, the Adjunct Associate Professor of the Department of Finance in HKUST; Ms. Mônica Zionede Hall, the Founder and CEO of Feliz Consulting; and Mr. Vincent Tam, Head in Talent Management of Hong Kong Productivity Council. We are delighted to have them at the Ceremony, and have the utmost honor to have them deliver insightful speeches.
The 29th Inauguration Ceremony signaled the start for the Elected Cabinet to take on the responsibilities and commit to serving as the Executive Committee members of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022. With the Ceremony acting as a bridge between business professionals and their potential counterparts from several institutions, the instance has become a platform for participants to exchange thoughts, and familiarize themselves with each other for the future. Although the Ceremony has officially marked the end of the 28th Committee, it was also the origin of our Session, and an occasion to be worth remembering.

FINA29
It is never easy when you embrace university life for the first time, which is why the Orientation Series is one of the most valued events in our plan. With a sequence of events from ice-breaking to highlighted campfire dances, we hope to provide guidance to freshmen with welcome, and build a place to feel like home. During the main functions, inexperience was fading in freshmen’s engagements, and bonds were being developed from the interactions. It is purposeful to witness the acceptance towards the Society and within the bonds prospered between new members.

REGISTRATION DAYS fina_hkustsu
The Registration Days are an excellent opportunity for us to meet freshmen for the first time, from common chit-chats and brief advice related to university life, we got to know dozens of newcomers on our online counter this year, with hopes of guiding them from the beginning. Accompanied by the orientation brochure publication, several promotion videos and interactive Instagram lives, the online registration period was far from tedious. From freshmen’s energetic responses and active participation, we gained massive enthusiasm and momentum for the series’ sequel. An e-booklet was published on 12th August 2021, covering most fundamentals for knowledge that a USTer should know. Aims to familiarize freshmen with their path in HKUST, the booklet content includes amenities, catering, transportation, useful applications, and more.
4:57
Several zoom sessions were organized from the 12th to the 15th of August, as to introduce our Society and act as a consulting counter for newcomers to inquire. The promotion video series was launched with a total of four videos, containing two interviews, a music video, and a short film. The series aim to attract more freshmen to join our Orientation Series, while busting myths and sharing the inside facts about UST through Q&As.

ORIENTATION DAY
The Orientation Day was the first opportunity that freshmen got to know the other members. Divided into several groups initially, we hope to familiarize freshmen with us and the other groupmates, as to provide a pleasant environment for them to enjoy the Orientation Camp starting from the day after. The Orientation Day commenced with ice-breaking games and group formation, and was followed by several group mass games, before concluding the day with a campfire dance tutorial. Observing interactions and brief chemistry developed during the day, the opportunities to chit-chat and get to know one another have contributed significantly to helping them join their group families and create memories together.
ORIENTATION CAMP The 3-day-2-night Orientation Camp this year was definitely an unforgettable one. With nearly two months of preparation work beforehand, we strived to provide the most momentous experiences to freshmen. “FINA DREAMLAND” was kicked off with a splash in midsummer, and the party vibes at night have awakened our inner hypes, there were even dance-offs and energetic screams despite the earlier craziness during water games. The following day also had its fun, from the checkpoint games at the campsite to the barbeque savory at night, everything seemed to be leading us to the fieriest finale. The night was lit on fire by the sparks in the middle, participants were dancing in a circle by the 3-meter-high campfire, and the whole Camp ended on bangs by consecutive oiling and watering on the tower. Right before the semester, participating freshmen have got to familiarize themselves with fellow batchmates and the seniors. It was nice to see them group as a whole to continue the relationship and unite together.

The Orientation Series concludes with nostalgic vibes. With a theme of “Uniform Party” attached to the Orientation Night, we witnessed the merge between secondary school memories and the university hype. As several group mass games and snack sessions passed, the get-together has concluded along with the Orientation Series. For freshmen, their university life had just begun, and we hope they could embrace the new environment and maintain prolonged relationships with other members of the Society.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM 2021Velryba The Mentorship Program is one of the highlighted events for every office session. We were lucky enough to have the pandemics relieving, and thus several in-person events could be organized to uphold the Society’s standards all along. Still, we strive to create bonding between members thirst for knowledge and professionals keen to mentor. Benefited from this year’s optimal situation and Executive Committee’s commitment, the feedbacks received after the Program were largely positive. The Mentorship Program 2021 was held under the theme “VELRYBA”, inspired by the nurturance of altruistic mother whales. Whales are one of the most intelligent aquatic animals, as mammals, they nurse their young, aiding the young ones for growth and development, and accompanying them to explore the boundless ocean. It resembles our mentors, who utilize their life experience and wisdom to guide our mentees to find their own desired paths and equip them with vital skills to excel in the dynamic business world. With the success of the wing-and-flutter system last year, we have decided to retain this grouping method and continue the trend. It is our appreciation to have almost a hundred mentees joining this event despite the situation, we were also delighted to see mentors and mentees in groups sharing their experiences whole-heartedly, and have experts guiding the youngsters for their better self.

Tea Gathering To kickstart the Mentorship Program 2021, a formal Tea Gathering was taken place on 3rd November 2021. When mentees and mentors have exchanged their contacts and started brief conversations, the Tea Gathering would be an optimal occasion for them to connect with each other in-person, and familiarize both parties with each other. Aiming to “ice-break” and foster communications, it was nice to observe groups of mentors and mentees chitchatting while enjoying snacks and tea, and had their connections building.

The event was held at 1st December 2021 despite the struggles in finding suitable venues under government regulations, and we are gratified to have over 120 participants joining us at Cordis, Hong Kong, to mingle and update each other, for their last time in this event. We are honored to have Prof. Lynn Pi to be our honorable guest speaker at the High Table Dinner, for her insightful speech. We would like to express our appreciation to all distinguished guests, mentors, the Department of Finance, and participating mentees for their immense support. We are also thrilled to see participants relishing the night and grasping necessary advice from discussions, further seizing their knowledges in a fruitful night with seniors and other mentees. After a series of career-oriented functions, the Mentorship Program 2021 has been officially brought to a close. The Program was concluded with a conventional formal dinner, and we believe the relationship between the mentors and mentees is just commencing. With their intermingled insights and friendliness preserved till future times, we hope that mentees could grasp more than a valuable night to mingle and forge a lengthened connection with mentors.

The Finance Festival is one of the most anticipated events for the Society every year. During the week, bluish promotion banners and various decorations appear around the campus, and the occasion would be a great opportunity for members to gather and strengthen our bonds within. It was with regret that the Opening Ceremony was canceled, and the campus was out of the blue for the week due to limited decorations and activity extent inside the campus. Still, the extra events added were able to deliver the necessary hype during this week. We are looking forward to a campus decorated in blue in the coming semester!
The Festival this year was truly kickstarted with a bang. Being the first event of the Festival Series, the Talent Show was held on 9th November 2021. We were elevated to see participants’ hype and wonderful performances, with ten total competing parties and over 60 audiences, the night was full of melodious voices and songs. Aiming to provide members with a platform to interact with business professionals directly, the open seminar with forum format has certainly done the job by welcoming direct inquiries, during or after the speaker’s sharing, to foster bilateral involvement. Two seminars in total were organized this year, featuring interview tips & risk management, and consulting & investment banking, respectively.
Interview Tips & Risk Management For the first seminar, we are honored to have Mr. Kenneth McKay, Executive Director at Morgan Stanley, share his extensive knowledge in the risk management field, and provide critical points for applying for fiercely-competed positions, especially those in investment banks.
Consulting & Investment Banking The second seminar was also of great expertise, and we are delighted to have Mr. Anthony Woo, Executive Director at Alpha Intelligence Capital, share his past experiences, the journey of an Investment banker at Morgan Stanley as well, and his advice for students passionate about the consulting and investment banking industry. The series this year could not have flourished without their substantial support.
FRESHMEN’S WORDS ANDY LO
“Exciting, rewarding, and blissful” are the words that I would use to conclude my journey in the Finance Students’ Society (FINA) as a freshman. Even though HKUST is notorious for its stress and tension, FINA is a haven for me to take a break and escape from the books and work for a while. It is a place where I met most of my lifelong friends who are inspiring and interesting, especially since I am the only one from my school who goes to HKUST. In fact, my peers in FINA influenced me to a certain extent. We exchanged ideas and thoughts; we had fun together; we backed one another up. I do enjoy spending time with them, and I love them so much. Lastly, kudos to all of the Excos and seniors for making this year’s events successful. As a participant in their Orientation Camp, Mentorship Program, and a series of workshops, I could really see their efforts. Therefore, I would like to send my best wishes to the upcoming office of FINA in 2022-2023. Good luck, and I hope FINA will reach another pinnacle soon!
MEGAN O
Adapting to a new environment is never easy, but FINA’s face-to-face Orientation Camp was definitely the best way to kickstart my university life. Knowing that there are always seniors and batchmates here to help me during the first few months in university was vital for this transition period. Throughout the year, I have not only enjoyed the playful gatherings of FINA, but also the enlightening academic functions held by FINA. Starting off with the Mentorship Program that kept me on the right track, FINA gave me the opportunity to learn from real-life experts, and gain industry insights that cannot be learned from textbooks. Apart from building such meaningful relationships with mentors across different fields, the career talks as well provided me with an in-depth understanding of a wide spectrum of industries, from fintech to traditional finance to quantitative trading. I even got a winter intern offer from one of the speakers, which is an extremely precious opportunity for freshmen like me. Thanks to the executive committee members who paid monumental effort to make us freshmen feel at home in this completely new, maybe even frightening university life, and our “jobamas” who sacrificed a lot of their free time just to make sure we feel confident and less nervous on campus.
ALAN CHAN
Joining The Finance Students’ Society might be the best decision I have ever made since studying at HKUST. From the Orientation Camp to VELRYBA Mentorship Program, and to Finance Festival, the fantastic experience provided me chances to get familiar with the new environment in HKUST as a freshman. I would say the people are the core of the Society. It is a place where I got to meet many new and interesting people to learn and play together. FINA is like a family to me, which can evoke happiness, satisfaction, and the sharing of memory-making experiences. I greatly appreciate the effort of The Finance Students’ Society 2021-2022 in organizing various activities. THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU

After two years of social unrest and pandemics, the Intramural Sports Competitions have finally taken place. We have participated in all three competition sections, including football, basketball, and badminton, in hopes to augmenting members’ university life and amplifying their sense of belonging to the Society. We actively encourage members to join our Sports Team and invite other members with similar interests to participate in sports events. Our sportsmen demonstrated a respectable level of sportsmanship and committed immense efforts to compete for the Society. It is a pity that we could not have the full Intramural Series this year (with Campus Run, Athletics Meet, and Aquatic Meet). At the same time, the operating three competitions were also canceled halfway because of the pandemics. However, we are still appreciative for the excellent results and the journey FINA Sports Team has gone through this year.
FOOTBALL FOOTBALL
Our Sports Team has participated in the group stage of the Football Intramural Competition, with only winning and unbeaten records for all three games against respectable opponents from other societies. It is nice to hear that the Team has only dropped one single friendly match this year, and everyone on the Team is looking forward for matches in the next semester.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be the Football Team Captain of the Finance Students’ Society this year. First, I would like to say a big thank you to all my teammates for supporting and cheering for each other. It has been a wonderful time playing with all the freshly joined members. It is such a pity that we could not have many chances to play football matches together in the second semester because of the severe ongoing pandemic. Yet, the matches in the first semester were remarkable and enjoyable. We built great teamwork, and our performance was spot-on. Although I will be graduating this year, I am still looking forward to the team’s performance next year and onwards, striving for their very best, and achieving the highest achievements in competitions in the name of the Society.”

“The 2021-2022 season has been a tough one for the team. Due to the severe pandemic, most matches are canceled in the Fall semester. In this season, the team has only played one match against the Biology Society. Fortunately, we outperformed our opponent and captured the victory by a slight advantage of 2 points. Even though we had only played one match, the team had been preparing for the Intramural Basketball Competition in advance by playing friendly games with other societies. As the team captain, I am grateful to see new blood joining the team. The energy and ambition of the freshmen have motivated the other team members to train harder, which leads to healthy competition in practicing. Through the friendly games and the match against the Biology Society, I clearly see the team’s chemistry growing steadily. Lastly, I hope the pandemic can be contained as soon as possible because I believe the team cannot wait any longer to play on the court again for FINA.”

Our Sports Team played two group stage games of Badminton Intramural Competition, with both matches concluded with a victory. Our Badminton Team took a tough battle with The Electronic and Computer Engineering Students’ Society Badminton Team and won by a 3-2 score. After the hard-fought battle, we went on with the momentum built and took the W in the match with a convincing 3-0 over The Chemistry Students’ Society Badminton Team, and concluded the year with an unbeaten record.

“I am honored to be a member of the FINA badminton team. I appreciate the atmosphere there, and FINA continues to provide athletes with assistance and support. I recall the first time I represented the FINA badminton team in a competition against other societies. I was nervous at first, but as I heard FINA’s Executives and members cheering, I felt more at ease and calm. We eventually won huge on that day and were crowned Intramural Badminton champions. Furthermore, the teammates are pleasant and dependable. I feel warm and united being a member of the FINA Badminton Team, which motivates me to do my best for the team. I wish the FINA badminton team the best of luck.”

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Aiming to promote the Society and link our members, the Executive Committee has organized the Welfare Express in the 2021 Fall Semester and 2022 Spring Semester, respectively. The Fall Semester Welfare Express were able to be conducted physically, and we opened an in-person counter during the week for members to pick up their pre-ordered products with ease. However, the resurgence of pandemics has moved the Spring Semester Welfare Express online, and we have instead offered extra delivery services for members interested in grabbing a product set. In the two Welfare Expresses, products such as hoodies, laptop sleeves, and power banks were offered for interested members. We would like to express our appreciation for the members who have supported the series, and we hope you enjoy our Society products.

Lastly, kudos to all of the executive committee members and seniors for making this year’s events successful. As a participant in their Orientation Camp, Mentorship Program, and a series of workshops, I could really see their efforts. Therefore, I would like to send my best wishes to the upcoming office of FINA in 2022-2023. Good luck, and I hope FINA will reach another pinnacle soon!

Prior to university, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and unease, knowing the fact that I would be stepping into an unfamiliar place. Luckily, I joined the Orientation Camp held by FSS, which has provided me substantial support in overcoming the challenge and my fears. The Executive Committee members are genuinely kind and warmhearted; their guidance was key to my adaptation to this new environment. Besides, FSS has provided me with a platform for bonding. Here, I met a lot of new friends who pursue similar interests, thus establishing close connections with both freshmen and seniors. Not to mention the academic guidance provided by FSS, ranging from Mentorship Program, firm visits, and internship opportunities, FSS has given me invaluable insights into the Finance industry. The Finance Students’ Society has brought me a network of connections, academic guidance, and a fruitful university life. I am sincerely grateful that I am part of this big family, as a member of FSS.
SABRINA FAN Joining O’Camp is regarded as one of the five things we must do after entering university, and for this very reason, I’ve engaged myself in the O’Camp held by The Finance Students’ Society which is attributed as the most amusing society in UST. And this is where my extraordinary university life begins. As I expected, the O’Camp was amazing, and the three-day experience was indelibly imprinted on my mind. I am glad to say that the end of O’Camp isn’t a mark of the end of our bonding. Instead, we have become much closer since then through having numerous reunions and spending most of the time together. As a member of the Society, I literally have lots of fun. On the other hand, it is intellectually rewarding in which that I received useful resources and valuable advice from the seniors and Excos. FINA is not only a rewarding society but also a big family filled with warmth. It has been an indispensable part of my university life, and I am pleased to have them.
KATIE CHAN FINA is the society that brings me the first impression of university life. Rewinding the time, I joined the FINA Orientation Camp with tons of activities that I had never tried before, such as playing campfire and pub night, and I also met my university friends, who I would say are of utmost importance to me now. So far, I would rate my university life as fruitful and delightful. Embarking on a new journey in life is never easy for anyone. Yet, my group Excos, Evenson, and Tiffany, have undoubtedly done a great job in helping freshmen to adapt to the new environment. They frequently held gatherings that allowed our group to gather and meet each other, which builds my sense of belonging to both Group 9 and FINA. I am grateful that I am part of this family and looking forward to contributing the society by being Joma next year.

“I could go running, and racing, and dancing, and chasing, and leaping, and bounding, hair flying, heart-pounding, and splashing, and reeling, and finally feeling now’s when my life begins!” - Rapunzel It is no exaggeration to say my new life begins in the O’Camp held by The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2021-2022. Used to be an introvert and antisocial person, this was completely a new and fresh experience for me. I am truly thankful to all Executive Committee who devoted their time and effort to planning and organizing the wonderful and diversified activities. I would say all those moments are definitely unforgettable. Moreover, more importantly, FSS gives me a sense of belongings that I have never had before. Meeting each other in August, and we have now become much closer. The bondings developed through the activities are what I cherish most and what I believe is the most valuable throughout my university life at HKUST. As mentioned, I used to be really introverted. So, may I once again show my gratitude to FSS, which made me become more outgoing and more confident. I am sure my university life will be more fruitful because I got my strength back - The Finance Students’ Society.
ADRIAN CHIU After being tormented by the stress and loneliness of retaking the HKDSE, I was finally admitted to HKUST business school and I was ready to embark on my new journey by commencing my university life. While I was scrolling my phone to look for orientation camps from an array of student societies from UST, the intriguing poster from The Finance Students’ Society caught my attention, and I decided to sign up for the Orientation Camp with my intimate. The O’Camp experience was way better than expected. I was able to befriend different freshmen, and even some of them had the same experience as I did. Moreover, the group facilitators ‘jobamas’ and Excos are so caring as they tried their best to elevate the O’Camp experience to make it one of the most memorable experiences in our university life, and help us adapt to the new university life after the O’Camp. I would like to avail of this opportunity to show my gratitude to the Excos, “jobas”, and “jomas” for making my freshman year such fruitful!
JAMIE PARNG From knowing absolutely nothing (getting cold messages after JUPAS) till now, it is indeed a huge transformation and transition in life for me. Now, as I recall my first semester in university, I realize a lot of people I know and the relationships that supported me throughout the journey are built around The Finance Students’ Society. Amidst the stressful environment, it is easy to lose yourself in the whirlpool, and it is these very moments when you’ll need people around you to lift you up. Besides, FINA also provided an opportunity for me the try things that I had not done before, which undoubtedly became one of the most precious memories in my life. In these four months, as cheesy as it sounds, I did discover more about myself and a way to survive and enjoy university. THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU

With the unprecedented pandemic situation, life has been more difficult and stressful. Social gatherings and all kinds of activities are prohibited, and frankly, I have never expected any university life other than academics. Joining the Orientation Camp not only balanced my studies and leisure, but also provided me with an opportunity to enjoy and finish one of the must-do items of university students as I didn’t have a chance to join any in my freshman year which is my greatest regret. I’m truly grateful to have met all the good friends in FINA. We support and stand by each other’s side no matter what. All the moments we have shared, the laughter and tears, will be treasured. I could never have had such a fruitful and rewarding school life without joining the Society. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone in the Society, especially the Excos, for holding different events wholeheartedly and for the effort in building a comfortable environment for members.
GORDON CHIU
It seems odd for a non-business majoring student to join the Finance Students’ Society, yet my decision to join FINA was indeed right. Introduced to this Society by my graduated senior, the Executive Committee at that time, I was moved by the spirit and excitement the Society had to offer, and have decided to join the FINA family. We had fun in the Orientation Series, met, and had fun with the other groupmates and seniors, that’s when I knew FINA would have a special place in my heart. It is rare to have so many friends, either from the same discipline or not, to walk along with you on this journey, and I am immensely glad to have my groupmates supporting me and each other. As one of the group’s active seniors, I feel the stuff and responsibilities I need to accomplish. It is always nice to witness another year of the Orientation Series, which brings my juniors from secondary school and other FINA members into the group. Witnessing them develop from newcomers to an experienced USTer, the emotions and bonds created within cannot be described with bare words, and I am glad to be with them, and FINA. I would like to thank the Excos of the Society, for their contribution to organizing various events with commitment, and my groupmates for backing up each other.
LOUIS MAK FINA provides one of the most welcoming environments, and this is where I met my first group of university buddies. By joining the Orientation Series and cementing myself into the group, the friends I made here have always been at my side, and have backed me up over the years. Without The Finance Student’s Society, I would never be able to strike a balance between academics and recreational activities. When I’m upset, I can always get spiritual and physical support, which is why I’ve been able to get through all of the difficult periods throughout my university journey. It has been a fantastic path along, and no one else could ever be able to erase the memories we’ve had!

(SESSION 2017-2018)
Thank you FINA29! While 2021 continues to be a year of uncertainties and lockdowns, FINA thrived through the difficult times and continued to be a precious place for all members. Kudos to the Excos for their great job in continuing the legacy. I’m extremely proud to see this family grow and new friendships blossom. Things end, but memories last forever. FINA remains irreplaceable in my dear heart even after graduation. As the Society turns a new page, I am certain FINA30 will be excelling in what FINA is best at — creating lifelong joyous remembrance for everyone.

(SESSION 2019-2020)
“F-I-N-A FINA!” Chants during promotion still linger in my brain every time I pass through the school Atrium. It was like yesterday when I first entered HKUST as a freshman and was brought into the community of FINA. The past executive committee members were always there for us while we navigated university life, and created the most welcoming experience a freshman could’ve imagined. I met my first friends from the university here and have fostered lifelong relationships since then. FINA has always been a place we can all call home, and I am proud to say that we all cherish the Society and bonds created here. The value of bringing people together and forming deep friendships has always been at the core of FINA, and I am glad to say that FINA29 have truly embodied the spirit over their term. Thank you, FINA29, for overcoming the obstacles laid before them in 2021 and making FINA a welcoming place for new members. Long live the blue spirit!

(SESSION 2020-2021)
It has been another tough year for the Society and everyone else. The 29th Cabinet has, however, strived to overcome all the impediments to deliver on their promises. It is never easy to create something that one has never been through. Yet despite the lack of experience, they were determined enough to bring back lots of in-person functions, which all our members have longed for. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to FINA29 for serving the mission aligned with the name of their Cabinet, FINAPRICITY—restoring the lost vitality and warmth in the Society. Every session of FINA was a thoroughly different story told by a distinctive Cabinet. FINA29 has certainly left a unique slash of blue at the sunset of their own story as well. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE’S WORDS
EXCOs’ words
Evenson Lam CHAIRPERSON The clock is ticking, and our chapter is approaching the end. I would like to express my whole-hearted gratitude to the Society for adding so many colors to my university life. Needless to say, this year was troublesome under the pandemic situation, and I am sure that there is no need for me to further explain how many hardships we have encountered. However, I am so honored to have my fellow Executive Committee share this unforgettable experience with me. Every time I looked into our shared album, I recalled the joyful memories we have had together. Although the work was demanding and I hate feeling drained out, I must admit that I missed those days deep down in my heart. I still remember that words cannot describe how surprised my father was when I told him that I was going to be the Chairperson of the Society. His shy and indoorsy son, who seldom used to open up himself to others, was trying to lead a team. He appreciated my courage and confidence, yet also reminded me of the uneasy path laid ahead of me. He was right, and there were still many things for me to learn. I may not be good leader material, but I am really grateful that my “Jorng Yuen” offered me the chance to learn and grow. Thank you for withstanding me throughout this whole year. Rome wasn’t built in one day, and we are now sitting in the shade today as the former Executive Committee planted the tree a long time ago. Thank you all for providing unlimited support and offering invaluable advice to us. Sometimes we don’t even realize how important your suggestions are until we have experienced them. It will be meaningless to me if there is nobody to witness our achievement. Therefore, I am so thankful to my “Jojainuis” It always makes me smile when they enjoy our events and gather with other friends they have met in the Society. I truly hope that bringing them into this family will give them spectacular memories and lifelong friendships. Time flies, but not memories. I look forward to seeing you all after the pandemic eases. Jagr Ting INTERNAL VICE-CHAIRPERSON In the blink of an eye, it has come to the time to leave the parting letter. It’s a difficult day for me, but also a day of reflection and gratitude. Reflecting on my year serving as an Executive committee member in FSS, and all that was required for my achievements and current status, reminded me of the many people I owe humble, sincere gratitude. Everyone has assisted me immensely and has performed a vital role in my personal development. The one-year journey will always be engraved in my heart and be the most unforgettable tour of my university studies. With much sadness but without regret, I’ve put down my career development and academic performance in exchange for a year of an amazing expedition with my colleagues. The time we spent together was definitely worth a fortune. To my beloved Committee members, thank you for all your effort and dedication. It was an honor to work with you all. Whenever speaking of my year in FSS, it’s not about the events we have organized, nor the achievements we’ve made, but rather, I would think about the fruitful time we shared together, the trust and love we had for each other, and the dedication we had to strive for the same goal. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To Samuel Ting, and all other ex-Committee members of the Society who’ve lent me a helping hand whenever needed, I owe you one. I couldn’t have completed the journey without you. Thank you for taking the time to educate me, coming from an ignorant boy, to a man who knows his role and would like to take up the coming responsibilities. Please allow me to represent the Society and acknowledge how much you’ve done for FSS. I’d bear your words in mind and continue contributing to this place under your concept. FSS means something different to me. A love so deep where I gave you my all - from my mind and body, to my spirit and soul. I’d always be that kid with the determined look in my eyes, and a forever-burning heart.
EXCOs’ words
Bonnie Tam EXTERNAL VICE-CHAIRPERSON “Never regret anything that made you smile.” When the joy you have experienced outweighs the sadness you have encountered, even the sweat and tears are sweet. Despite the unpredictable situation of pandemics throughout this year, I am truly grateful to embark on my Executive Committee journey during this dull time. FINAPRICITY, ignited by apricity. With the meaning of “warmth of the sun in winter”, our cabinet has the intention to be the gleam of sunshine, illuminating the road for members to walk through the extreme coldness. Our cabinet had experienced powerless and desperate moments that were not only the despaired nights of brainstorming ideas, but are also the uncertainty of continuing or calling a halt to all events in the midst of the pandemic. Eventually, we could organize most of our events to inherit the spirit and culture of our Society. Pandemic is no longer a barrier that deters us from fulfilling our mission to organize entertaining activities; it in fact strengthens our bonding to create better events for members in times of utter despair. Looking back, the responsibility of an Executive Committee and the motivation from my cabinet members always keep me motivated to hang in there until there is a silver lining. Spending days and nights together, I am thankful to have my cabinet members backing me up. The Inauguration Ceremony was tough, whereas the cohesion between our cabinet and the past Executive Committee of FSS was memorable; The planning of the Mentorship Program 2021 was complex, whereas the joyfulness of our cabinet members and participants was rewardable. An Executive Committee is a position of giving and taking. I have enjoyed a remarkable journey in FSS throughout this year, but more importantly, it reminds me to contribute back to the future cabinets and the Society. I am proud to be part of the FSS community, and hereby hope all members of the 30th Cabinet, FINASTRA, enjoy the adventurous coming year and create unforgettable memories that you would be proud of. Wendy Tsang INTERNAL SECRETARY To me, being an Executive Committee member of the Society has never been on my university wish list. It was totally out of the blue. But I’d say it’s the tiny spark that set fire to such a precious and priceless journey. Starting from scratch is never easy. Without many wild and bold memories under this difficult time of the unprecedented pandemics, we became someone to create valuable and rewarding experiences for a bunch of green and raw freshers. Everything sounds abstract, until we finally turn our imaginative and abstract thoughts in our minds into our desired outcomes. From Inauguration Ceremony to Orientation Series, from packing bundles to making decorations, from video shooting to site-visiting, we have spent countless days and nights doing preparations, figuring out the ideal way to implement our plans. Of course, there were times that we encountered setbacks: discovering printing errors on promotional materials before distribution; missing souvenirs before the kickoff of events… I also felt desperate and exhausted when we had to take tons of promotional shots, open counters amid the pandemic situations, and stay up late to make decorations. Nevertheless, except for the sweat and tears we poured in, we also went through thousands of joyous moments and waves of laughter. They added distinctive tastes to this wonderful voyage, healing many toiling and distressing occasions. Kudos to everyone who supported and guided us through this trip. Without their participation and engagement, we would not have come so far and grown so much from each of these valuable experiences. These life-long moments will always have a place in my heart.
EXCOs’ words
Johnny Yu EXTERNAL SECRETARY A year has passed, and I still remember the reason which brings me up to be an Executive Committee. One year ago, due to the pandemic, all students were experiencing online teaching mode. During this situation, my only thought was to make new friends while others focused on academics or internships. Although the time that can be spent on studying or internship was sacrificed, I have no regret for my decision. Standing on the stage, taking oath in front of over 200 audiences, and taking on the responsibility of being an Executive Committee, was my most memorable moment throughout the whole year. This moment has become my motivation whenever I face obstacles throughout the year. Time flies, and at this very moment, recalling those innumerable sleepless nights and tough times. My duty comes to an end, and I have no regret in my decision to become an Executive Committee. This year definitely has become a remarkable and fruitful year in my lifelong journey. I am so glad to have my Executive Committee members accompanying me throughout the whole year, and it is my honor to be a part of FINA29.

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Anakin Kwok FINANCIAL SECRETARY Time flies but memories last forever. Indisputably, even though we have faced lots of tough times throughout the year, we have become great companions and created many treasurable memories. To me, it has been a fruitful year. Unlike last year, the pandemic situation has become under control, and more face-to-face activities could be resumed. However, the difficulties we encountered did not disappear. Due to restrictions on social distance, many events could not be held on campus, and we had no choice but to choose to organize the events outside. To us, it was arduous since these situations were unprecedented. We had to come up with new planning for hosting activities, for example, logistics and venues. However, with the help of my fellow Executive Committee, we overcame obstacles one by one. Being the Financial Secretary of the FSS, they have offered many valuable and sound suggestions, enabling me to monitor the financial condition of the Society with ease. Without their help and efforts, nothing could be achieved. It was particularly rewarding when I heard positive comments from our dearest members. It showed that the efforts spent by every one of us eventually paid off. Frankly, the progress might be challenging, but the results accomplished outweigh the hard progress. These pleasant memories undoubtedly enriched my University life and would be long-lasting in my heart. Once again, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my fellow Executive Committee members. It is always my pleasure to be a part of the FSS. Here, I wish the next cabinet, FINASTRA, to carry on the legacy and earn great success in this coming year. See you and Goodbye :))

Tiffany Sit MARKETING SECRETARY & PUBLIC-RELATIONS SECRETARY
“The pine stays green in winter, wisdom in hardship.” Under the pandemic, this year has been difficult and unprecedented in many ways for all of us, and being Executive Committee members is also no exception. From the time of proposal to the time of event organization, we have dealt with various uncertainties. We may have felt bewildered and hesitant as a result of the pandemic, and we did not give up despite the difficulties. Instead, we concentrated our efforts on considering the perspectives of many stakeholders, developing contingency plans, identifying potential sponsors, etc. Despite the fact that this year is hard to get through, it also adds value to our journey as an Executive Committee, making it more valuable and irreplaceable. I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow Executive Committee members, and it would be impossible to complete all of the activities without them. We all have distinctive personalities, yet it allows us to understand one another better and accomplish the finest results. I am grateful to have these companions to share the highs and lows of life with me. It’s difficult to conceive how we would get through the difficulties without their assistance and direction. Thank you for transforming my university life into something spectacular. Being a member of the FSS Executive Committee is unquestionably a highlight for my youth. Lastly, I’d like to send my best wishes to the organization as well as the incoming cabinet. FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Henry Wong MARKETING SECRETARY It has been a challenging year for all of us, and we all have done a great job during the year of COVID. The events that we have launched are successful and come with the ending with blessings. Nonetheless, even with many unexpected situations, we have all done well. We have given 100% effort to organize as many events as we could. We have tried to organize a face-toface Orientation Camp and Mentorship Program this year, and these are events that we have not experienced before. Although there was certainly room for improvement, I am proud to be part of the FSS Committee in this challenging and chaotic year. I would like to give credit to my cabinet members. We have done our best to organize different events that we have never experienced. With a bunch of meetings, we have struggled with different kinds of restrictions and rules. I am delighted and grateful to work with the Executive Committee, to overcome different stumbling stones on this marvelous trip. Although the unexpected changes have posed significant challenges to our work, different supporting parties and our fellow members are supporting us. I have never regretted embarking on such a journey with challenges, friendship, joy, memories, and support. I believe FSS will continue to bloom and create a memorable experience for its members.
EXCOs’ words
Angel Ho PROMOTION SECRETARY 2021 has been a challenging yet rewarding year for me. The journey of being an Executive Committee member of The Finance Students’ Society is brimming with sweat and tears. Without any regrets and thanks to the decision made a year ago, which led me to this FINA family and be who I am today. I have grown up and transformed into a more responsible and mature person after this remarkable year. Stepping out of my comfort zone to take up the role as a Promotion Secretary has been one of the biggest challenges in my entire life. Started with zero knowledge about any designing software, and I needed to be familiar with all of them in just a short period of time. It has driven me to become an efficient person. Gaining trust, recognition and countless support from my partner and fellow cabinet members, I am more motivated and confident to exceed myself. Looking back, this year was very fruitful and filled with full of memories with all my ‘Jorng Yuens’. Still remember all those sleepless nights, silly inside jokes, all the tears and laughters, and all chaotic moments, I believe all these memories are still vivid in our minds. I am so proud to be part of ‘FINA29’ for what we all did this year, and I am beyond grateful to have all of you accompanying me through the ups and downs of the whole journey. Thank you all for tolerating my stupidness and mistakes, taking care of me, and backing me up. Without any of you, my university life could not be that splendid. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all ‘Gu Nei Mm Doe’ members, all ‘Jojainuis’, ‘Jobamas’ and my partner. I know I may not be the best ‘Exco’ but I am so thankful and fortunate to have all of you in this group. All your support and participation are priceless to me. Last but not least, I would like to thank all past Excos, FINA members for all the support this year. I wish the next cabinet, FINASTRA, an unforgettable and fruitful year and to carry on the legacy. FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Kiki Lee PROMOTION SECRETARY “Finis Coronat Opus”, a phrase meaning “the end crowns the work”, remarks our Inauguration ceremony, also announcing the start of my journey of being an Executive Committee. Sometimes I paused and asked myself if this crowning was worth all the work. When other students of my age were doing their best in academics, I was puzzled about how tall the decoration should be. I struggled a lot being the Promotion Secretary, especially when I was working alone at midnight, running out of ideas and doubting my ability. This yearbook marks the end of my journey being the Promotion Secretary, and looking at those pictures in the yearbook; I know that all the sweats and tears aren’t spent worthless. It’s grateful to see how the freshmen are spending a fruitful time in this place, and I hope this place will always be their shelter in their university life. And, of course, the inseparable part of this journey, my “Jorng Yuen”. I would like to say thank you, at the same time, sorry for bearing my poor time management — also, thanks to each of my “Jorng Yuen” for making this year remarkable and memorable. I will forever remember the uncountable nights we spent in the society room making decorations, enjoying the “vending machine buffet” in LG5, and having breakfast together after overnight work. Although there were hard times, every moment I spent with them was splendid. Again, I would like to give my wholehearted thanks to my “Jorng Yuen”, “Gu Nei Mm Doe” members, past Excos, and FINA members who have made the crown meaningful.
EXCOs’ words
Justin Lam WELFARE SECRETARY Time flies like an arrow; in the blink of an eye, my journey in being an Executive Committee has almost come to an end. Being shy, I had never imagined I would become one of the Executive Committee and gained so many throughout this year. Special thanks to FINA, this place, which brings me warmth and caring, and my funny Executive Committee members, who bring a lot of joy within it. Unavoidably, not just laughter, but tears, complaints, and quarrels because of the fatigable workload, which makes us grow, review our shortcomings, and become a better person. We may get angry at each other sometimes due to different opinions, but there’s no hostility that lasts over the night, because we all know we speak out is for the sake of the Society. Through holding different kinds of activities, I have gained a lot of stuff that can never be learned by reading books. Meanwhile, there might be sacrifices like my own leisure time and academic results, but when you see the members and freshmen in FINA enjoy so much in the activities we held, you know that’s just so worthy. This year is never an easy year for everyone. We have come through Covid-19, then omicron, that we can only have a zoom lesson at home. And that’s perhaps harder for Executive Committee as we have to think of ways to hold events attracting members to join, and the plan we have prepared always has to be changed. But I just want to thank you, my fellow Committee members, and say that we have all come through it! The trip of FINA29 has been over! Here may I wish the upcoming session a fruitful year and always remember ‘leave no regrets’.

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Tim Chu ACADEMIC SECRETARY & PUBLICATION SECRETARY
If you told my past self, when I just joined the university, that I would become the Executive Committee of a student-led society and bear the corresponding responsibilities, I would probably assume you’re nuts. Yet, I am now here, typing my last words in the last publication of the session, with emotions brewing. It has been an arduous journey from the beginning. During the times of Election Board meetings and Promotion Period, the awkward state of pandemics has thoroughly messed up our schedules and plans, and we had to sacrifice our time from leisure and sleep to showcase our better selves. The efforts paid off, and I had heartfelt gratitude for my first event organized for the Society. There were smiles, sweats, and mixed emotions among us along the way. Maybe the finest details have been forgotten, but I will never forget the year we stayed together as one, committed ourselves fully, and continued the legacy of the blues. The difficulties along the way were just mere, that we managed to eliminate most without hesitation and backfiring, and I am grateful for that. As the only Executive Committee member who took up two positions from the get-go - Academic Secretary and Publication Secretary, I could certainly feel the weight of both names on my back. Monitoring other Committee members’ academics while being responsible for all the words the Society outputs was certainly not an easy time to go through. Luckily, I have my “Jorng yuens”, the friends that walked along the way together, gripping ourselves with one accord. My genuine thanks to them for their tolerates of this kid, that has finally grown a bit to bear his responsibilities. My time with you guys is shining, and I didn’t even remotely regret joining this family. Finally, it’s my honor to serve as an Executive Committee in The Finance Students’ Society, and my heart will always reserve space for this special place. And, thank you, for your continued support along this challenging expedition. My wishes to our successor, FINASTRA, for a fruitful year ahead. Looking forward to seeing you at future events conducted by FSS!
EXCOs’ words
Ricco Chen SPORTS AND RECREATIONAL SECRETARY Every journey begins with a choice. I am still so glad that I decided to be an Executive Committee member of FINA. After enrolling in UST, I was afraid that I could not meet new friends because of my shyness. Fortunately, joining FINA O’Camp made my freshmen year fruitful. I met many good friends in FINA, and the group leaders (“jobamas”) were warm and caring and gave me the feeling of family. Therefore, I decided to be the Executive Committee of FSS, hoping to contribute more to this Society. Our journey started from the Promotion Period, one of the most fruitful periods I had at UST. The endless nights of making fascinating decorations in the society room, accompanied by the tasty food in the LG5 vending machines and followed by the beautiful sunrise at dawn, are invaluable memories of my university life. Although it was exhausting, for the first time, I felt like my university life was meaningful, and there was something worthy for me to devote. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my beloved cabinet members. This year is a tough one. On-campus teaching resumed; therefore, we had to organize many face-toface functions which we had not experienced. Throughout the arduous year, we have encountered adversities, quarrels, and moments that we almost gave up. Yet, being together made us strong to overcome these challenges. Without anyone of them, it is impossible for me to complete this miraculous journey. I will always remember the sleepless nights of making water bombs in Yuen Long. The end of our session is not the finish, and I firmly believe that our friendship will last forever. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our FINA sportsmen. Thank you for playing matches for FINA. Without your contribution, FINA could not achieve excellent results in the Intramural Sports Competitions. Unfortunately, Intramural Competitions are postponed for long after another wave of the pandemic. I truly hope that the Intramural Competitions can resume as soon as possible. At last, I would like to wish the next cabinet, FINASTRA, a successful and joyful year. Leave no regrets! THE FINANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY, HKUSTSU

Tammy Nie CURRENT BUSINESS AFFAIRS SECRETARY Time flies and the time of being an Executive Committee of The Finance Students’ Society has come to an end. I can still remember how struggling I was when forming the Nominated Cabinet. But now, I can say that I have never and will never regret joining FINA29. Being the Current Business Affairs Secretary, I always doubt whether I am suitable for this position and whether I can fulfill my responsibilities and promises. I started losing my ambitions bit by bit. After holding a few events, I finally understood the importance of the give and take relationship. ‘When you have given nothing, ask for nothing.’ Therefore, I tried to push myself out of my comfort zone and put more effort on my duties. I found many opportunities for learning and expanding my horizons during this year-long journey. At last, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my dear Executive Committee members for encouraging each other when facing different obstacles and spending days and nights working hard together until the end.

FINANCE YEARBOOK 2021-2022
Introduction Astra, a Latin word meaning “to the stars”, depicts one’s journey reaching the stars, and their desire to pursue a bright future. Integrating “Finance” and “Astra”, we derived our name as “FINASTRA”, aiming to perform as stars to commence the brightness, strive for excellence, and maintain the professional brand name of The Finance Students’ Society. Under all circumstances, stars shine in the darkness, symbolizing the silver lining. This implies FINASTRA would always be there to offer a helping hand to our fellow members and provide support in different aspects. Similar to how stars enlighten the darkness, FINASTRA would as well endeavor to provide shelter to the lost with sheer tenacity and perseverance.
