in Higher Education
The Master’s program
prepares professionals for entry-level administrative, management and leadership positions in public and private institutions, and in post secondary education.
Student Affairs emphasis
prepares students to work in a variety of settings, including housing, Greek life, student activities, orientation, career development, academic advising, union administration, judicial affairs, services for students with disabilities and generalist programs.
General Administration emphasis
prepares students to work in higher education administrative positions other than student affairs, including institutional research development and alumni affairs, and athletics. Most students can complete the online degree in seven consecutive semesters of part-time study while completing two courses per semester. Part-time students may enroll and begin course work in fall, spring, or summer semesters.
The Doctoral degree
includes tracks for both practitioners and researchers. Upon completion of the doctoral degree, graduates will have mastered a comprehensive body of knowledge related to the subject matter field of higher education.

Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of policy and practice through the conduct of systematic inquiry in a defined arena of higher education, the development of an evaluation strategy based upon a clear understanding of current practice and professional standards, and the application of cultural and contextual variables to the unique institutional setting in which the inquiry is to occur.
Doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.)
Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of theory and research through the composition of an integrated literature review of research, the development of testable hypotheses generated from deductive and inductive logic, and the elaboration of a research design that will meet rigorous methodological standards for theoretical and empirical research on a selected topic.
Graduate Certificate
Certificate in Institutional Research (Online)
is designed to provide academic and professional development opportunities for institutional researchers, administrators, graduate students, and faculty from all areas of higher education. The certificate consists of 18 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in three areas of study.

The Jon C. Dalton Institute on College Student Values has focused on issues related to trends in college students’ values for over two decades. We examine the meaning and importance of benevolent purpose among college students and how college practitioners and faculty can assist students in enhancing their passions in life.
The Hardee Center sponsors educational programs, research, and service activities that promote leadership and ethics in the field of higher education. The Center also conducts educational seminars, hosts national meetings and workshops, sponsors research projects, and provides consultation on issues related to higher education leadership and ethics.
We benefit from an extensive network of alumni who serve in leadership positions across the country and who provide support for our current and former students. Our alumni serve in positions related to development and alumni affairs, business management, auxiliary enterprises, student financial services, institutional research, and athletics administration.

Tamara Bertrand Jones’ research interests include assessment and evaluation in higher education (student affairs), culturally responsive evaluation, mentoring and the transition for graduate students to junior faculty. She previously served as Coordinator for the Office of Research in the Division of Student Affairs. She was responsible for assisting divisional and departmental efforts in assessment and evaluation and served as an adjunct instructor in the Higher Education program.

Lara Perez-Felkner’s research examines the social context of schools in relation to adolescents’ college and career outcomes. Lara has a particular focus on the mechanisms underlying racial-ethnic and gender disparities in postsecondary educational attainment and entry to careers in STEM fields. Before coming to FSU, she was a postdoctoral fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago and an Associate Fellow of the Pathways to Adulthood International Fellowship program focused on transitions to higher education and careers.

Brad Cox has invested broadly in research that aims to understand student success and improve student outcomes. Of particular interest are 1) student persistence and graduation; 2) racial equality of student outcomes; and 3) institutional policies that facilitate student success. His recent work has appeared in Research in Higher Education and The Review of Higher Education. Previously, Cox served as the Coordinator of Research and Public Information at the University of South Carolina’s National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition.

Robert Schwartz joined the Florida State faculty in 1998. He completed his doctoral work at Indiana University, earning a Ph.D. in Higher Education with minors in American studies and women’s studies. His research interests include women and minorities in higher education, history of higher education, and research on student concerns. He won the 2008 Faculty Seminole Award, presented to a faculty member who is “responsible for major contributions to the university through service to students.” His book, Deans of Men and the Shaping of Modern College Culture was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2010.

Kathy Guthrie joined the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in fall 2008. She also holds a joint appointment at Florida State’s Center for Leadership and Civic Education where she leads work in the undergraduate certificate in leadership studies. Her areas of expertise focus on development of leadership skills and responsible citizenship in undergraduate students. Her current focus is on change theory around students’ use of social media and learning outcomes in relation to reflective teaching and learning.

David Tandberg’s teaching and research interests center on state higher education policy and politics, state higher education finance, governance and economics. Previously, Tandberg served as a special assistant to the Secretary of Education in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. He served as a top advisor to the secretary and was a member of the secretary’s cabinet and led the department’s effort to develop a postsecondary longitudinal student unit record data system, and conducted research and data analysis for the department and the Governor’s office.

Shouping Hu’s research interests examine college access and success, student engagement, and higher education policy. His more than forty publications include articles in Journal of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, Innovative Higher Education, and two higher education monographs published by Jossey-Bass.
Thomas Kent “T.K.” Wetherell served as President of The Florida State University from 2003-2010. Wetherell has a long and distinguished career in higher education. He has been inducted into Florida State University’s Hall of Fame and was a recipient of the prestigious MooreStone Award as well as the university’s Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Wetherell is the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Innovation (CHERTI).

Vice President, Division of Student Affairs Mary B. Coburn has been serving as FSU’s Vice President for Student Affairs since 2003. Prior to her current role, she was the vice-president of Student Affairs at Tallahassee Community College from 1995 until 2003. Her areas of interest include organization and administration, professional development, and leadership and service.
Perry Crowell, Ed.D.
Ed.D. earned from The Florida State University
Assistant Vice President for Administrative Services Perry Crowell oversees the Business Administrators program, the finance and accounting functions for the Athletic Department, the Seminole Boosters and the College of Medicine as well as the fiscal and plant operations at the FSU Panama City Campus, and the Ringling Museum located in Sarasota, Florida. He has published articles on student financial aid, technology, email addiction and college student debt.
Laura Osteen, Ph.D.

Director, The Center for Leadership and Civic Education Laura Osteen is Director of the Center for Leadership & Civic Education, a campus-wide endeavor to develop responsible citizens and effective leaders. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the department working closely with the Undergraduate Leadership Studies program. Specializing in the field of college student personnel with an emphasis in leadership development and organizational change, she is a member of the leadership identity development research team.
Mark Palazesi, Ph.D.

Director, Office of Human Resources Louis “Mark” Palazesi is a director in Florida State’s Office of Human Resources. He oversees a large section of Human Resources, including compensation, employment, training and development, HR Data and HR IT. Palazesi earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from The Florida State University. Prior to his arrival at Florida State he had an extensive career in business and operational management.

Jeanine Ward-Roof, Ph.D.

Dean of Students Jeanine Ward-Roof has experience working with crisis management and functional areas including alcohol and drug education, assessment/ research, community service, disability services, family/parent programs, fraternity and sorority life, judicial programs, orientation/new student programs, victim advocate programs, withdrawal services. Her areas of interest are orientation and first-year programs, change management, transfer students, and parent services.
