OUR MISSION DURING COVID-19 Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida State University shifted to remote operations, which continued through the close of the fiscal year. The Alumni Association was quick to adapt its approach to fulfilling our mission; keeping the university’s network of alumni connected when there was a scarcity of in-person interaction, was more important than ever. Acknowledging the needs of alumni and friends amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, our programming continued virtually, and inperson events were adapted to allow for social distancing. Attendees had many options to engage, whether live streaming, tuning in virtually, or joining us in person. With homecoming canceled in Fall 2020, the programs and outreach team tailored the Alumni Association’s offerings to suit virtual and hybrid formats for April 2021’s spring homecoming.

We continued to present Webinar Wednesday, which we launched at the onset of the pandemic and expanded our alumni outreach with the Three Torches Webinar Series. Through this platform, the association presented topics ranging from mental health to networking and diversity, equity and inclusion, while spotlighting outstanding alumni as well as many FSU colleges and departments. Our volunteer-driven Seminole Clubs® and Chapters continued their mission of uniting alumni, friends, and fans of FSU in their shared geographic regions. This year, Seminole Clubs® nationwide placed much of their focus on outreach to future alumni such as the Unconquered Scholars and by allocating an increased number of financial resources to student scholarships.

1. During the height of the pandemic, FSU provided 300 COVID-19 vaccines daily to the Tallahassee Community at the university's Donald L Tucker Civic Center. 2. Webinar Wednesday was the first webinar series launched by the Alumni Association at the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. 3. The Three Torches Webinar Series episode titled The Versatility of Hospitality featured notable alumnus Brian Ford (B.S. ’89), Chief Operating Officer for the Super Bowl LV Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 4. (Opposite page) The Seminole Club of New York City won the Homegating 2020 garnet bracket for large clubs. Representing their local club, members shared their “Homegating” pictures on social media during football season for a chance to win prizes donated by the FSU Bookstore.

OUR MISSION DURING COVID-19 With more time spent online than ever, we made use of digital channels to engage alumni and friends. We leveraged our social media platforms to provide information on our programming and resources for alumni as well as to ensure that university messaging reached as many Noles as possible. In addition, we launched our podcast, Echoes, which quickly became a source of both information and entertainment for our alumni. The last year was inarguably the most challenging in recent history and it is for that reason that the Alumni Association is so grateful that we were able to seamlessly carry out our mission, enriching the lives of the Seminole Family, during such a time. We are equally thankful for our volunteer leaders, indebted to our members, and so inspired by our alumni who all played vital roles in maintaining a strong and resilient community centered around their shared pride for FSU. As we navigate the ongoing uncertainties of the pandemic, the Alumni Association will continue to engage and support our constituents as we have done for over a century while exploring new ways to connect with each other both virtually and in person.

“After thinking about how I would pop the question to the love of my life, it became a no-brainer that we had to return to our roots. Having served as a Student Alumni Association Leadership Council member during my four years at Florida State, I remembered the Westcott Brick Program available to students and alumni. I couldn’t imagine a better way of popping the question while at the same time remaining as a permanent fixture at our Alma Mater. It’s a moment we will be able to relive forever.”

PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH Developing programming, hosting events and honoring alumni and friends of FSU are integral parts of accomplishing our mission of enriching the lives of the Seminole Family. 1. A Spring Homecoming 2021 webinar lead by University and Heritage Archivist Sandra Varry, on the history of FSU's campus. 2. With COVID-19 restrictions limiting in-person events, the programs and outreach team faced the challenging task of reimagining our approach to alumni programming. We received praise from constituents on our wide selection of both entertaining and educational virtual offerings and were grateful to have the ability to recognize notable alumni through our annual award ceremonies that were adapted to virtual and hybrid formats.

Events and Programs KICK OFF LUNCHEON

For nearly seven decades, the Alumni Association’s Kickoff luncheon has been a much-anticipated event heralding the upcoming FSU Football season. In order to keep the spirit alive amidst the pandemic, in 2020 our programs and outreach team transformed the event into a virtual presentation, while honoring the traditions of previous in-person luncheons. Voice of the Seminoles Gene Deckerhoff served as master of ceremonies and the luncheon included a segment with FSU Head Football Coach, Mike Norvell where he provided a sneak peek into the upcoming football season and star players.

WEBINARS

The Webinar Wednesday series continued to engage alumni by featuring presentations from experts 14

within the university community. These professionals provided viewers with valuable information on timely and relevant topics within their chosen field. In partnership with Academic Affairs, the Association launched The Three Torches Webinar Series to highlight faculty and alumni from the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship, FSU Dedman College of Hospitality, and the College of Fine Arts.

VIRTUAL NETWORKING

With few in-person networking opportunities available amidst the pandemic, the Association provided multiple virtual networking opportunities allowing alumni and friends to connect in a digital space. The events featured unique topics such as Networking Responsibly with Alcohol and Virtual Networking Tips.

TEDXFSU

In April 2021 the Alumni Association co-sponsored TEDxFSU, a program encouraging conversation and the sharing of ideas, and hosted the hybrid event in the association’s grand ballroom. The space had a limited capacity of 50 people to allow for social distancing and was live-streamed to all other registrants. The Association was exceedingly proud that Herneshia Dukes (B.S. ’08), Young Alumni Network president, was a chosen speaker at the event.

PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH CLASS OF 2020 CELEBRATION

FSU’s Class of 2020 endured many hardships as their college experience was interrupted by the pandemic. When they graduated in 2020, the commencement celebration took place virtually, but in May 2021, they were invited back to campus to finally celebrate their graduation in person. To complement the commencement ceremonies, the Alumni Association partnered with the Division of Student Affairs to hold

a series of celebrations throughout the weekend. The Alumni Association hosted a happy hour in the Alumni Center Courtyard that was attended by 345 people. The event culminated in a traditional champagne toast to salute the Class of 2020 on becoming official Florida State University Alumni. Making for a sweet ending to a beautiful weekend, on Commencement Day, the Division of Student Affairs hosted Diplomas and Doughnuts, inviting the Class of 2020 and their families to take graduation photos at the iconic Westcott Fountain.

Student Alumni Association

“Being a member of the Student Alumni Association (SAA) has been one of the most impactful and enriching experiences of my collegiate career. The Student Alumni Association (SAA)’s mission is to foster spirit, tradition, and pride throughout the university. Composed of current undergraduate and graduate students, it provides its members, poised to become accomplished alumni, with activities and programs that promote leadership development, scholarship, and peer engagement.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING

SAA leadership developed creative strategies to support its members and build relationships among them during an era of virtual learning and social distancing. In addition to a few in-person events, SAA hosted multiple virtual programs such as a LinkedIn workshop, a resume and cover letter workshop, an etiquette dinner, and a Q&A with alumni. These events provided opportunities for professional development and building connections with alumni to these budding leaders.

SPRING HOMECOMING & HOMECOMING LIVE

In Fall 2020, the University Homecoming Committee made the difficult decision to move all Homecoming programming to Spring 2021. The SAA Executive Board dedicated their Spring semester to crafting a meaningful Homecoming Court experience in a virtual world and planning a “Reverse Homecoming Parade”.

To that end, the Board established the Alumni Ambassadors Award. The scholarship offsets recipients’ academic expenses in pursuit of their life-long leadership goals. This year's recipients, Madison Fitzpatrick and Chris Hagemeyer were each awarded $5,000.

FSU ASIAN AMERICAN ALUMNI NETWORK

The FSU Asian American Alumni Network hosted two virtual events to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May of 2021. In celebration, they held a virtual networking event and a panel discussion that included highly accomplished Asian American Alumni in conversation about the lack of diversity in the workplace.

PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH >> ALUMNI NETWORKS FSU PRIDE ALUMNI NETWORK

The network hosted Pride Night! in June of 2021 in celebration of Pride Month. The network hosted a panel of FSU Faculty, alumni, and authors who discussed the challenges the transgender community faces and how to enact change through taking small steps. The panel also focused on the importance of inclusivity and the significant impact of human connection on all of us. The event ended with a beautiful entertainment performance by Ms. Serena Cha Cha (B.F.A. ’12).

FSU HISPANIC/LATINX NETWORK

The FSU Hispanic/Latinx Network celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in October 2020 by hosting a virtual trivia night for alumni and friends.

FSU JEWISH ALUMNI NETWORK

Our newest alumni affinity group—the FSU Jewish Alumni Network, launched in October 2020. Led by President Jared Ross (B.A. ’99, J.D. ’06), the network provides Jewish Alumni with a connection to the university and an opportunity to elevate the Jewish experience at FSU. The Hebrew phrase and Jewish custom, l’dor v’dor, or passing along traditions and values “from generation to generation,” serves as JAN’s guiding principle. For its first function, the network hosted a virtual networking event in May of 2021 to celebrate Jewish Heritage Month.

FSU NATIONAL BLACK ALUMNI

Every day in February, in celebration of Black History Month, the network used social media to share alumni accomplishments in a series called FSU Black Alumni Spotlights. See all 28 profiles on Black Alumni’s Instagram @FSUBA. The network was active during the year by hosting three DEI focused webinars, a Voter Awareness Webinar and other events such as a Virtual Networking Hour with students.

“The Alumni Association offers so many opportunities for graduates and supporters of Florida State to be engaged and involved. The Jewish Alumni Network was started because we saw a need to support FSU’s Jewish community. We realized in creating this network the impact we could have on students, alumni and friends of the university. I am proud to be part of such an important FSU network and encourage everyone who has the opportunity to join a network to do so.”

“Being a part of the Asian American Alumni Network (AAAN), along with the FSU Alumni Association as a whole, has helped me to bridge the gap from college into the ‘real world.’ Through the AAAN, I have developed many relationships with my fellow alumni that I wouldn’t have met without this organization - and I hope to provide the same opportunities for others. The COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of anti-Asian rhetoric proved how important our community network is to support each other and validate our experiences.”

SEMINOLE CLUBS® AND CHAPTERS Volunteer-driven and alumni-oriented, the Alumni Association’s Seminole Clubs® and Chapters unite FSU alumni, friends, and fans in specific geographic areas to foster a continued bond of collegiate fellowship and connection to the university.

Clubs Activities

Thanks to TIRELESS VOLUNTEER LEADERS, there is a Seminole Club® in each of the top 5 alumni regions in and outside Florida to ensure alumni have a lifetime connection to the university.

SEMINOLE SERVICE DAY

For 2021, Seminole Service Day, historically an annual service event making a difference in clubs’ local communities, was renamed Seminole Support Day and pivoted to an initiative benefiting members of the campus community, our Unconquered Scholars. This group of exceptional FSU Students within the CARE program come to the university from the foster system, are wards of the state, in relative care, or experience homelessness.

GRAD YEAR GIVE Select Seminole Clubs® took part in Grad Year Give, a fundraiser in which alumni give to their club’s endowed scholarship fund by donating the amount of their graduation year in dollars and cents.

Oaks (B.S. ’95) participates in the Seminole Club® of the Rockies’ Grad Year Give. Her daughter Maggie, a future alumna, was one of the club’s scholarship recipients this year.

A goal was set to provide at least 75 boxes, but clubs, with support from members of the association, affinity networks, the association board of directors and staff were able to far exceed the target. The project raised $25,025 in funding and 143 boxes were distributed to Unconquered Scholars.

HOMEGATING

1 22

Our Seminole Clubs® led the effort to provide members of the program with an “FSU Scholar Starter Box,” a 22-item package filled with basics for dorm life such as pillows, sheets, blankets, towels, laundry bags, and other necessities. The kit also included a 4-year Student Alumni Association membership giving the new students a strong start to their FSU journey.

4

Homegating was 2020’s answer to tailgating and a safe way to keep the spirit of FSU Football strong during social distancing. Seminole Clubs® across the country competed to win prizes donated by the FSU Bookstore by encouraging members of their club to share images of their decked out FSU homegates on social media. The victors were Seminole Club of NYC in the garnet bracket representing large clubs and the San Diego Seminole Club in the gold bracket representing small clubs.

SEMINOLE CLUBS® AND CHAPTERS

Scholarships Seminole Clubs® and Chapters across the nation are dedicated to helping future alumni meet their educational goals. To that end, many Clubs award annual scholarships to FSU students from their local areas or home states. The eligibility criteria, number of scholarships offered, and amount of each award vary by club and chapter. There were 21 Seminole Clubs® with endowed scholarships through the FSU Foundation in FY21 and $62,700 was raised toward them. In total, Seminole Clubs® awarded over $114,000 in scholarships to both incoming and current students.

“Having moved to a different state after graduation, I have seen first-hand how vital membership in the FSU Alumni Association is. No matter where you go, there are groups of dedicated alumni that ensure you have a built-in resource for networking, assistance, and new connections. I have friends from all around the country because of the support the Alumni Association provides to each and every club. It’s not just a four-year degree – it’s a lifetime of extended family. You can’t put a price tag on how grateful I am to be an FSU alumna!”

Scholar Starter Boxes distributed 170 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE In celebration of FSU’s 170th birthday, we shared a blast from the university’s past. Pictured in the impressive panorama necessitating seven Instagram swipes to view in full are Florida State College for Women students and faculty gathered outside the newly constructed Administration Building, now known as Westcott Building, in the early 1910s.

The Seminole Clubs team partnered with the Communications Department to promote their Seminole Support Day project benefitting the Unconquered Scholars program, a division of CARE. Many of these special students have faced profound hardships during childhood that may increase their likelihood of not earning a degree. The goal of the Support Day initiative was to provide these students with a “FSU Scholar Starter Pack” to ease their transition into college. The invaluable boxes included dorm life necessities as well as a 4-year Student Alumni Association membership. To raise funds for the campaign, we felt email segmentation would be a powerful strategy to connect with unique audiences within the greater FSU family. We needed to call upon a group who possessed both a passion for, and investment to the university, so there was no question that Alumni Association Life Members would be the perfect choice. The overwhelming response to our targeted email resulted in a successful campaign that supported these students on their path to an FSU degree. 25
