Dean’s Message
Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining us for the 23 - 24 Opera season. For our spring semester offering we are bringing the Czech language to the stage with this charming opera that depicts the circle of life through the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
As we begin to say farewell to retiring faculty Stage Director, Matthew Lata, we have a number of returning designers who have brought their art to the stage once again. Peter Harrison, whose last works were Transformations and Der Vampyr, returns as scenic designer. Mikaela Baird returns after A Streetcar Named Desire as our lighting and projection designer. Costume designer Christina Marullo along with wig & makeup designer Joel Schaeffer create masterful animal/human hybrids for this unique production. Alum Cody Martin, who has enjoyed success as the Music Director at Pensacola Opera, conducts the University Symphony Orchestra, and Ben Howard with the FSU Dance program, brings the final elements of this opera together along with the stage direction of Matthew Lata.
Opera has long held a special place of prominence at the College of Music and it serves as an ideal vehicle to showcase the talents of our musicians and the professional quality of our productions. If you are one of many in our community who has been a regular patron of opera at Florida State University, we welcome you back for this production in Opperman Music Hall. If you are new, we hope you enjoy your experience here with us tonight. We look forward to seeing you in May for Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied. Thank you for your continued support of our programs and students.
Sincerely,
M. Todd Queen DeanPRIHODY LISKY BYSTROUSKY

ACT I.
In a Moravian forest populated by insects, birds and animals, a Forester stops to rest on his way home and falls asleep. A young Vixen cautiously approaches the clearing. Awakened by a Frog, the Forester sees the fox cub. He captures her and decides to take her home.
Time passes. The Vixen has grown up in the Forester’s house, where life is hard: the Forester’s Wife hates her, the Dog makes disgusting advances, and the children mistreat her. When the Vixen takes revenge on a child, the Forester’s Wife demands that she be tied up. Alone in the yard, the Vixen dreams. The Forester is strangely drawn into the vision, as he dreams of his past youthful love.
Reality returns at dawn. Horrified to witness the Hens’ submission to the desires of the male chauvinist Rooster, the Vixen tries to incite a revolution, but in vain. She fakes her own death, tricks the Rooster and kills him as well as most of the Hens. The Forester’s Wife attempts to shoot the Vixen, but she escapes.
The Vixen now looks for a home in the forest. Finding the Badger’s den to her taste, she insults him until he leaves. She takes up residence.
The Forester, the Priest, and the Schoolmaster meet at the inn. The Forester teases the Schoolmaster about his love life. The Schoolmaster responds with mocking references to the Vixen. The Priest inveighs against all women. When the Innkeeper raises the subject of the Vixen, the Forester storms off.
On the way home, the drunken Schoolmaster sees the Vixen, takes her to be Terynka, the woman he loves, and pours out his heart. The Priest arrives, and the sight of the Vixen evokes an unhappy love story from his youth. The Forester arrives, still in pursuit of the Vixen. Spotting her, he fires his gun, but she again escapes. The Vixen meets a Fox: they fall in love and spend the night together. The following morning, the Vixen is shocked to discover she is pregnant. The Fox takes her to the Woodpecker, who officiates their wedding ceremony. A celebration ensues.
ACT II.
The Poacher, out hunting, meets the Forester, who grows angry when he hears of the Poacher’s imminent marriage to Terynka. Discovering a dead rabbit, the Forester realizes the Vixen is nearby and prepares a trap. She, accompanied by her cubs, laughs at the foolish trick. Coming across the Vixen, the Poacher chases her and shoots her dead.
Back in the inn, the now widowed Forester and the Schoolmaster talk to the Innkeeper’s Wife about the Priest, who has moved to another parish. They also discuss Terynka, who will marry the Poacher wearing a new foxfur muff.
Leaving the inn, the Forester reflects on his life, his youth and his late wife. When he sees a fox cub resembling the young Vixen he once possessed, he wonders whether he should capture her and take her home. The animals reappear as the Forester falls asleep for the last time. The cycle of life continues.
Director’s Notes
Příhody lišky Bystroušky ( The Cunning Little Vixen ) is likely the only regularlyperformed opera based on a comic strip by the artist Rudolf Těsnohlídek. He tells the story of a group of animals with human characteristics as they interact with people and other creatures. It was serialized and illustrated in Leoš Janáček’s hometown paper in Brno, in the Czech province of Moravia in the early 1920s. Legend has it that Janáček heard his housekeeper laughing at it, asked why, and then followed her lighthearted suggestion that he turn it into an opera.
Janáček wrote his own libretto. While the title character is the Vixen, the through line revolves around the character of the Forester, whose obsession with the Vixen draws him away from his staid existence. It is significant that, even after the Vixen’s death in the middle of Act III, nature…and the Forester…must move on. In this, Janáček may have been inspired by his personal story, which combined a passionless marriage with a life-long love interest, never requited. While the opera has its comic moments, its themes also include the natural cycle of life and death, the passage of time, and the transient power of love, motherhood, and liberation. It is a collage of sounds and images ranging from comedy to heartbreak and, as such, is a mirror of real life.
Janáček’s profound love of nature inspired a brilliant and descriptive score rich in color and nuance. The soundscape includes bird calls, the naive voices of children, and themes representing nature, love, and obsession. It is a bittersweet ode to the idea that we must accept what we have even while longing for what we do not, all the while preparing for the inevitable end. There is a plot, but it is secondary to the establishment of feeling in each scene – each memory.
In the opera, humans are paired with animals who share their characteristics. Some of these are sung by the same person – the Mosquito with the Schoolmaster, the Badger with the Parson, the Owl with the Forester’s wife and, perhaps in a less direct way, the Vixen with the Forester. Animal avatars represent humans without their emotional baggage. For the Forester, the Vixen represents the freedom and newness of first love that, once gone, can never be regained. The others’ avatars contrast the animals’ existence, untroubled by self-awareness or overthinking, with the humans’ insistence on intellectualizing themselves out of happiness. While the Forester at first does not appear sympathetic, we learn with him to accept our fate. His final paean to nature is Janáček’s statement of his own philosophy and was performed at the composer’s funeral.
Our production represents a woodland that can morph as we require. Projections identify moods, seasons, and, occasionally, help with the characters’ backstories. Costumes balance the human and animal features, as many of the characters sometimes walk the line between these two worlds. Movement style also combines natural and artificial worlds.
While Vixen is often presented in translation, we opted to perform it in Czech. This has been an enormous challenge for our cast, and they have risen admirably to it. It is a real first for FSU Opera and an opportunity for our audience to experience this wonderful score as originally conceived. In the end the piece is optimistic. Nature will always have its way.
Thank You
