Dean’s Message
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the start of the 2024-25 opera season here at Florida State University! This production marks the start of a new era for Florida State University Opera: acclaimed director James Marvel will showcase his talents as the new Stage Director here with Hänsel und Gretel. James joins us after many years of working at the University of Tennessee Knoxville in addition to years of freelance directing across the United States.
He is joined by new Opera Program Manager Matt Cooksey, an alumnus of FSU and formerly associated with the Indianapolis and Florida Grand Operas. Together with Dr. McDonald, this group of artists, teachers, and administrators are poised to help our great program deliver more hands-on instruction with students and prepare them for the modern workplace in the opera industry.
This production of Hänsel und Gretel is but one example of their practical training at work. Humperdinck’s romantic German opera has graced the stages of opera companies around the world, and now a new generation of singers will carry the baton forward. Thanks to the team of coaches surrounding this production, including Dr. Eric Rieger and Dr. Elizabeth Avery, our singers have been prepared to thoughtfully present their text at a standard expected of professional emerging artists.
Your patronage and support of not only this production but also the College of Music helps make great work like this possible. I thank you for your attendance and encourage you to share your great experience here today with your friends. We look forward to seeing you again later this year for The Rake’s Progress by Stravinsky and Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck.
Sincerely,
M. Todd Queen Dean

Synopsis
ACT I.
Hänsel and Gretel are stuck alone at home, watching hours go by with nothing but making brooms for their father and their imagination to keep their minds off of hunger. Gretel devises an ingenious distraction by teaching Hänsel a dance, but their Mother very sternly reprimands the two children from slacking off while she was away. In her anger, she sends the children into the woods to gather strawberries, and she despairs at the meager existence she can provide for her children.
Hope is on the way, though, when the Father arrives with a bountiful display of food, and a little tipsy, too. A busy festival season is a perfect occasion to sell brooms to clean up, and the Father has come into his own goldrush. The parents celebrate this amazing bounty and the Father is eager to share some of the spoils with his children. When the Mother says that she has sent the children into the woods alone, he is terrified. A witch lives in the woods, and rumors say that she eats any children that come by her home. The Mother and Father gather the few things they need and go off into the woods to find their children.
ACT II.
The children find themselves in a thick wood on the hunt for food. Both children are quite successful at finding strawberries, but Hänsel enjoys so many strawberries that they’ll show up nearly empty-handed at home. As the sun goes down and strange voices are heard in the wood, Gretel’s fear skyrockets. Surprisingly, the children have nothing to fear as a benevolent Sandman comes to make sure they fall asleep. The children nearly doze off right away, but Hänsel leads Gretel in the prayer that their mother taught them. The prayer calls out for the protection of fourteen angels, who quickly meet them and watch over them all night.
ACT III.
The following morning a Dew Fairy uses their powers to wake Hänsel and Gretel up. Gretel is disoriented, but playfully wakes her brother up after her drowsiness wears off. The two children hear a new voice in the woods, and the voice beckons them to a different patch in the forest. They encounter a fantastic home seemingly made out of every sweet they’ve never known.
The children are once again unable to resist the appeal of delicious food, and therefore take a bite of the house. The Witch is patient with the children at first, but then makes a very lavish invitation for them to come inside. The children both know better and try to leave, but the Witch casts a spell that stops them in their tracks. Hänsel – against his will – marches into a tiny cage, and Gretel is forced to feed him and dance at the Witch’s command.
Gretel bides her time until the Witch leaves her wand unguarded. With its magical powers, she frees Hänsel from the Witch’s control, and waits for another window of opportunity. When the Witch asks Gretel to check the oven, she feigns incompetence and asks the Witch to come over and check herself. As the Witch gets near the door, the two children push her into the oven where she is cooked in an enchanted fire.
With the Witch gone, a large row of gingerbread children are transformed back into real children waking up from a long dream. Moments later, Hänsel and Gretel’s Father and Mother arrive, ready to take them back home. They thank the Lord for his protection and all live happily ever after.
Director’s Note
There is no substitute for the experience of attending live theatre. The telling of stories and legends is as old as civilization itself. Who among us has not been utterly transported and transformed by the magical fantasy realms created by the authors and illustrators of children’s books? Whose imagination has not been set ablaze by the evocative and vivid imagery set forth in their pages? In creating this production, it was my intention to help the audience recapture that sense of childhood wonder and delight. In order to do so, we have created an enthralling and immersive video landscape influenced and inspired by centuries of illustrations intended for children. My goal with every show I direct is to give the audience an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. It is my most sincere hope that this production is one that is remembered and cherished by you and your family for years to come. We are honored by your presence and thankful for your support of the wonderful student artists at FSU!

Orfeo ed Euridice
C.W. Gluck
How far would you go to reunite with the one you lost? The tale of Orpheus sees him go to the gates of Hades, walk among the Elysian Fields, and reunite with his wife Euridice. His final challenge to bring her out of the underworld will be his greatest yet in Gluck’s masterpiece opera.
