Critical Thinking & Experiential Learning Students’ experiences outside the classroom provide opportunities to apply critical thinking

skills developed in class. Student Affairs partners with Academic Affairs to support a number of initiatives that encourage critical thinking.

Internships Mission

The Career Center collaborates with academic departments to provide co-op and internship opportunities as well as recognize students completing these experiences. Data from graduating seniors indicate internships impact skill development.

The Division of Student Affairs collaborates with students, faculty and staff to create welcoming, supportive and challenging environments that maximize opportunities for student learning and success. Through high quality programs, the Division facilitates student development, celebrates differences, and promotes civic and global responsibility.

Garnet & Gold Scholar Society

The Garnet & Gold Scholar Society provides engagement opportunities in Leadership, Internship, Service, International, and Research. Facilitated with academic partners, these experiences and the culminating Synthesis project allow students to hone their critical thinking skills.

• Garnet & Gold currently has 536 students actively participating in engagement experiences. • Since 2011, 220 students have been inducted as scholars. • This spring, Garnet & Gold anticipates inducting over 100 students, a record number and a nearly 50% increase from the previous largest class. • Spring induction is April 24, 5pm at the Alumni Center.

“While I certainly gained wisdom in certain areas, I was consistently challenged with new ideas or cultural challenges…I had to be creative in order to get things done in a timely manner, and learned to be assertive in business settings.” - Madison Marks, Garnet & Gold Scholar

Service Scholars

Coordinated by the Center for Leadership and Social Change, the Service Scholars program recruits and engages high achieving students who are committed to solving local, state, and global problems. The program provides scholarships for 11-12 new students each year and combines classroom learning with active service to challenge participants to think critically about addressing societal issues.
