GRADUATE ASSISTANT, HONORS PROGRAM

THE UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM

FSU has a long history of providing recognition and support for outstanding students through its honors programs. The mission statement for these programs was provided by a faculty directive in 1932 that asked the President and the Faculty Senate “to provide enlarged opportunities for students; to give them a challenge and an incentive: to develop initiative, resourcefulness and reliance; to present knowledge in terms of fields, not courses.” Today the university supports that mission through two well-established and highly successful programs: University Honors and Honors in the Major. THE POSITION

The primary responsibility of this graduate assistantship is supporting events within the honors program including, but not limited to, the Medallion Ceremony, Outstanding Senior Scholars banquet, workshops, presentations, tabling, recruitment, and others as needed. Academic advising is an essential duty, which provides support and guidance to honors students. The graduate assistant will also gain experience facilitating student development by assisting both the Honors Colloquium Leader Program and Honors Student Association, a registered student organization. Finally, the graduate assistant plays a key role in collecting information for and writing the honors bimonthly newsletter as well as our overall social media presence online.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support honors engagement experiences and events • Provide academic support and guidance for honors students • Assist with the recruitment and development of Honors Colloquium Leaders • Facilitate growth of the executive board of the Honors Student Association • Create and distribute the bimonthly honors newsletter • Maintain active outreach through honors social media platforms. • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Admitted in an FSU Graduate Program (Preferably Master’s in Higher Education) • Ability to relate well to others, especially students and student groups • Experience in program planning and evaluation • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing • Ability to receive and follow instructions related to assigned programs and activities • Skilled in the use of computers and appropriate software i.e. Excel, PowerPoint • Available nights and weekends
