From the Director's Desk Dear Honors Students, This month I would like to give a “shout out to all of those Honors students that participated in the recent campus volunteer, fundraising, and research activities. I know many of you helped make Dance Marathon and The Big Event huge successes. Congratulations to those Honors students that presented at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference in Miami and the Undergraduate Research Symposium held here on campus. Finally, I was very proud to see many of you at the Phi Eta Sigma Induction Ceremony, both as inductees and current members. Relay for Life is coming up next week and I am confident that many of you will be a part of that great event. I am sure there were other worthwhile events that took place recently, so please stop by and share them with me! Overall, I am very impressed with all that you do. keep up the good work! Also, I would like to wish all of you good luck on finals, and I hope that you have a safe and happy summer break! Sincerely, Mark Kearley A picture says a thousand words. Take a lot over break! Here are some of me and my family in Italy on vacation last summer.

Dr. Metcalf is currently the Director of International Affairs here at Florida State University. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Political Sceince at FSU in 1983. She then went on to earn her Master's and Ph.D. in Political Science from Standford University. She has received numerous awards such as the President's Travel Grant (1993, 1994, 1996) and the University Teaching Incentive Award (1994). She is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, American Political Science Association, and the International Studies Association. She discusses her passion for traveling below:

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Lee Metcalf

"My favorite thing to do is to travel. As an FSU undergrad, I participated in the London program. In graduate school, I studied Russian in the Soviet Union, and I was in Berlin as the wall was coming down. Since then, I have taken advantage of many other opportunities to travel both for work and pleasure. My favorite part of travelling is the serendipitous opportunities. I happened to be in Warsaw on the anniversary of the Soviet invasion in World War II, and I came upon a commemorative parade with survivors of the Home Army and the Jewish Defense Forces. I also attended a European Cup qualifying game between Croatia and Georgia in Split, Croatia which made FSU football games look tame."

11 "Doable" Study Tips 1. Get some sleep! Do we really need to say why? 2. Drink water and eat fruit...staying hydrated improves cognitive function and eating berries and apples improves memory! 3. Partner up with someone in class! But, avoid splitting the work. Create your own study guide and then review topics together to ensure you don't miss any pertinent information 4. TV off, music on! The right music can improve your focus. So, no, Jay-Z won't help you master Organic Chemistry. 5. Be the "explainer". Teaching someone else reveals what you have down and what you may need another couple hours of studying on.

11 "Doable" Study Tips 6. Create mental associations with the material. Any association, no matter how ridiculous, strengthens the your mental connection between the two ideas...so, when you remember one, you remember the other. 7. If you're a visual learner, draw the information...tables, diagrams, mind maps, oh my! 8. Find ways to effectively manage any anxiety you have such as breathing techniques, stretching, or even loving on some adorable puppies. 9. Wear a watch to your final! This way you know exactly how much time you have left. 10. Just do it! Don't wait to be in the "mood" to study. 11. Finally, just give it your best shot!
