FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK

Dear Honors Students, I hope everyone had an enjoyable spring break and that you are ready to finish the semester strong. It always amazes me how quickly time flies from spring break through finals week so stay on top of your schoolwork and don’t be caught off guard! As summer approaches, I know many of you are planning to do some amazing things this summer so please stop by the Honors office and let us know of your plans. Whether you will be taking classes at one the FSU Study Centers, doing research on or off campus, going overseas to do service work, or just traveling to an interesting location, we would love to know. Personally, this summer my daughter is going to Peru with FSU Global Scholars so I will be traveling to Peru in July. Besides Machu Pichu, I don’t know much about traveling in Peru (or South America for that matter) so if you know of any interesting places to visit, please let me know. Go Noles, Dr. Kearley mkearley@fsu.edu

March Madness What is March Madness?

March Madness is a basketball tournament in March that involves 68 teams and 7 rounds of single-elimination brackets. 32 Division 1 teams get an automatic bid to the tournament (called automatic qualifiers), given that they win their conferences, and the other 36 are selected on Selection Sunday, which involves decisions regarding who is invited to the tournament, made by a special committee. Florida State University is a Division 1 team, selected as a 9th seed team, and some of the standout atlarge bid recipients include Oklahoma, Syracuse, and University of Maryland Baltimore.

The Seminoles Road to March Madness

Florida State took on the Missouri Tigers in the first round of the tournament, beating them 67-54. The next week, FSU beat Xavier 75-70, who knocked FSU out of their bracket last season. Some of our star players include Terrence Mann, Christ Koumadje, and Trent Forest.

Game updates

In Florida State’s 3rd round game, Gonzaga was beat 75-60, causing another upset. Gonzaga, a team that rarely plays more than three of its bench players, was forced to play Rui Hachimura in place of their starting forward Killian Tillie, who reaggravated an injury during warm ups. On 3/24, FSU took on Michigan, a 3rd seed team, as part of the Elite Eight. They lost 58-54.

JustServe What is "JustServe"? JustServe.org and it's complimentary phone app is a forum for "volunteer needs of organizations may be posted and volunteers may search for places to serve in the community". On the website or the phone app, you simply make an account, then search for volunteer opportunities by entering your current zip code. All posted volunteer opportunities will be listed! Learn more about the JustServe community by visiting JustServe.org

How can we benefit? Using this app will make it 10x easier to find a community service opportunity in the community of Tallahassee. Within the first two years of being an FSU Honors student, you need to accrue at least 20 hours of community service. Through the website or the app, you can sign up for the opportunity and be ready to start serving with that organization. This app is truly a dream come true if you are unsure where to begin to find places to volunteer at! As Dieter F. Uchtdorf said, "As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own happiness." Note: If an organization you volunteer for is not listed on the ServScript application, simply select "Other" under the organization when you fill it out with your hours.
