Season Preview
Falcons Return Experienced Roster in 2017 When head coach Courtney Materazzi’s Fairmont State volleyball team takes the floor for the first time in 2017 at the Edinboro Volleyball Crossover, her veteran squad will be looking to build off the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. Materazzi, who enters her fourth year as Fairmont State’s head volleyball coach, has led the Falcons to a 70-29 overall record during the past three seasons – finishing in the top three of the league in each of the seasons and falling to nationally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit in each of the last three Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship matches. With those recent results, and a roster that includes four seniors, four juniors and 13 returning players; the Falcons came into camp knowing that expectations would be high this season. However, Materazzi feels that her team has been up to the challenge so far. “With 13 of 15 players on our roster returning, we have been able to jump right into system play and the maturity level and motivation has been high during fall camp,” said Materazzi. “Our players were upset by the early loss in the NCAA Tournament last season and know that we must play well early to get another chance this season.” Four players on Fairmont’s roster have been on the team during each of the last three seasons – coming up short of winning a conference championship in the MEC Tournament Finals each year. Mackenzie Harrison, Jessica Furda, Julia Shemaitis and Morgan Poling want to flip the script in 2017 – their final season in a Fairmont State uniform. “This season is so bittersweet,” said Harrison. “Coming into my last year, we have high expectations and as a captain and senior I want to lead by example and help make our gym competitive each and every day, we can’t take days, moments or plays off if we want to be successful.” Fellow senior and setter Jessica Furda agrees. “Returning for my senior year is both exciting and overwhelming,” said Furda. “As a team captain and leader, I hope to lead the team through encouragement, dependability and hard work. We need to take advantage of opportunities on and off the court and I want to push the team to do just that.” Laurence King Harrison, an honorable mention All-American
selection by D2CCA as a junior, continues to build her legacy at Fairmont State. As the team’s starting right-side hitter in each of the last three seasons, Harrison enters her senior season in 10th place in school history in kills. A season ago, Harrison recorded the second-most kills in school history and in NCAA Division II with 581. She ranked in the top 10 in the country in both points and kills per set and was named MEC Player of the Week three times during the 2016 season. The Twinsburg, Ohio standout also recorded three of the top 10 single-game performances in school history last season with 31 kills against Notre Dame College, 27 against Seton Hill and 26 vs. Gannon in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. “Obviously we are thrilled to have an All-American hitter returning this season,” said Materazzi when asked about Harrison’s presence on the court. “She is a force and constantly pushes herself and tries to get the most out of herself and her teammates every single day.” “But, the best part about this team is that each of our four seniors lead in their own way and we rely on them to keep the tempo and pace in our gym every day.” Fellow senior and starting setter Jessica Furda is also climbing the FSU record book in career assists, currently sitting in sixth place with 2,653 in her first three seasons with the Falcons. As a junior, Furda ranked second in the MEC in assists – putting together the 10th-best single season in school history for a setter with 1,290 assists. Junior libero Megan Clerico and senior defensive specialist and hitter Julia Shemaitis both anchored the team’s defense with 584 and 321 digs respectively in 2016. Clerico earned MEC honorable mention as a sophomore after ranking fourth in the league in digs. In addition, Poling has moved from outside hitter to middle hitter for her senior season. Fairmont State will be tested early, as Walsh and Bellarmine are the first two opponents listed on the schedule for 2017. A year ago, the Falcons dropped matches to both teams at the Walsh Crossover in North Canton, including a 3-2 loss to the Knights and a 3-1 defeat to the home standing Cavaliers. “Since we are unable to influence or control our conference schedule, non-conference and regional
matches are critical for bid selection and regional rankings,” said Materazzi when asked about her aggressive non-conference scheduling. “We strive to play the top teams, it is not an option if we want to continue to play in the postseason.”

Coaching Staff
Courtney Materazzi HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON
Courtney Materazzi begins her fourth season leading the Fairmont State volleyball program, entering the season with a 70-29 overall record as head coach. In 2016, Materazzi led the Falcons to their first NCAA Tournament bid since 1998 as FSU finished the year with a 21-14 overall record. Following the 2016 season, junior right-side hitter Mackenzie Harrison earned All-America honors from D2CCA after totaling the second-most kills in a single season at Fairmont State (581). In addition, setter Jessica Furda and libero Megan Clerico both earned postseason honors from the Mountain East Conference, and middle hitter Rebecca Feeney was named to the MEC All-Freshman Team. The Falcons also garnered academic honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the second-consecutive season - totaling a 3.46 team grade-point average during the 2016-17 academic year. In addition, nine FSU players earned MEC academic honors following the fall semester. In each of her three seasons leading the FSU volleyball program, the Falcons have finished runner-up in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, tallying a conference record of 38-10 over the past three seasons. Two seasons ago, the Falcons went 25-8 overall and had a 14-2 mark in MEC play, only falling to the NCAA Division II National Champions in conference play. A total of five players earned Mountain East Conference honors a season ago, including first team selections Mackenzie Harrison and Erin Harwood. Seniors Kaitlyn Witsman and Courtney Kress both earned MEC honorable mention and Megan Clerico was named to the MEC All-Freshman Team. In addition to their on-court success, the Falcons also had 11 players earn MEC academic honors in 2015. The 2015-16 FSU volleyball team was also recognized by the AVCA by earning the team academic award. The Falcons had a team grade-point average of 3.54 during the 2015-16 academic year. A Fairmont State volleyball player has also received the Jasper H. Colebank Award for three-straight season, including Breanna Blot (2017), Erin Harwood (2016) and Tabbie Bias (2015). The 2014 volleyball team finished with a 24-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark in MEC matches, landing three players on MEC postseason honor teams. Seniors Tabbie Bias and Tiff Smathers both earned first team All-MEC honors while Mackenzie Harrison was named to the All-MEC second team. Bias and Harrison each earned all-region honors. In addition to those honors, Kaitlyn Witsaman also earned first team Capital One Academic All-District for her work on the volleyball court and in the classroom. Prior to being named head coach, Materazzi served as an assistant volleyball coach for six seasons, including five at Fairmont State. In 2013, Materazzi helped lead the Falcons to a 27-7 overall record and runner-up finish in the inaugural Mountain East Conference Volleyball Tournament. She also helped

mentor four first team All-MEC performers, including Bri Swann, who also earned second team Capital One Academic All-America honors. During the 2012 season, Materazzi helped coach Fairmont State to a 24-9 overall record with three FSU players earning postseason honors from the WVIAC. In 2011, Materazzi served as an assistant coach for the indoor program and the inaugural sand volleyball team at Stetson University. The Hatters sand volleyball team finished with a 9-8 record, finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, and had a pair compete at the AVCA Championships. Julia Bassett was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year. In her first stint at Fairmont State from 2008-10, Materazzi helped the Falcons increase their win total each season with her on the bench, culminating with a 20-10 overall record and a runner-up finish in the WVIAC standings in 2010. That season, two players earned first team All-WVIAC honors, the first from FSU to earn that honor since 2005. Materazzi came to Fairmont after a stellar career at Cal State Monterey Bay. As a senior for the Otters, she was a team captain and second team all-conference selection. She was also named player of the week during her senior season and was named to the league’s all-academic team. During her career, the volleyball team was twice selected as the women’s team of the year. She and her husband, Christian, were married in the summer of 2010. The couple welcomed their first son, Dominic James, during the summer of 2017.
Jackie Buchanan ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON
Jackie Buchanan begins her fourth season as assistant volleyball coach at Fairmont State University after joining the program in the summer of 2014. Buchanan was a threeyear standout on the volleyball team at Ohio State University-Newark, earning all-conference honors as a defensive specialist. In 2016, Buchanan helped lead the Falcons to a 21-14 overall record as the team earned a bid to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998. The Falcons also advanced to their third-consecutive MEC Tournament Championship Match during postseason play and right-side hitter Mackenzie Harrison earned honorable mention All-America honors from D2CCA following the season. Two seasons ago, the Falcons finished the year with a 25-8 overall record and a 14-2 mark in MEC play, landing five players on Mountain East Conference postseason teams. Buchanan helped develop Erin Harwood into one of the top servers in program history, as Harwood left Fairmont State ranked second in career aces with 258. In 2014, Buchanan helped lead the Falcons to a 24-7 overall record and a runner-up finish in both the MEC regular season and postseason tournament. Four players earned postseason honors for the Falcons following the season and FSU appeared in the regional rankings every week before just missing the NCAA Tournament. In her role with the Falcons, Buchanan assists with the day-to-day operations of the volleyball program and works specifically with defensive specialists and servers. Prior to arriving in Fairmont, Buchanan spent the previous six years coaching high school volleyball, most recently at Greenville High School in South Carolina. Buchanan also has several years of experience coaching volleyball at the college level. As an assistant coach at Lander University and Limestone College, Buchanan helped lead the teams to conference championships. During the 2004-05 season, Buchanan was the Head Volleyball/Softball Coach at Union College. Under her guidance, the volleyball team had a record of 15-19 overall and a 12-8 mark in league play. Buchanan’s coaching career began in 2002 at her alma mater, helping the volleyball team to a 15-7 record as the team’s assistant coach. Buchanan has also coached Junior Olympic Club Volleyball on the national and regional level for the past seven years and has experience organizing and assisting with volleyball camps. Buchanan earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 2002 and obtained a master’s in K-12 education at Union College in 2005.
