Botanical Garden Hosts Sculpture Exhibit

Naples Botanical Garden and the National Sculpture Society are presenting ‘All Creatures Great and Small,’ featuring 32 sculptures, all with an animal theme, many created in bronze. The exhibit will be on display throughout the Naples Botanical Garden, January 8 – March 8.

The sculptures were created by some of the country’s most exciting artists, including the President of Bok Tower Gardens, David Price, whose lifelike alligator, ‘Focused Attention,’ measures nearly 10 feet long. Other noted wildlife and animal sculptors with work on view include Kent Ullberg, Floyd DeWitt, Bart Walter, and Leo Osborne, as well as pieces by several talented new artists from across the United States.

National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by a group of America’s most prominent sculptors. Its members have created much of this country’s public sculptures, coins, and medals since the late 1800s. The Society received nearly 100 entries for ‘All Creatures Great and Small.’ A panel of five jurors, including two representatives from Naples Botanical Garden, reviewed all show submissions and selected the final pieces to exhibit.

Garden docents will be available to discuss the works. The exhibit is free with general admission.

The exhibit, ‘Florida in the Civil War,’ at the SWFLMuseum of History, includes documents, letters, uniforms, and other artifacts from the Civil War.

History Museum Hosts Civil War Exhibit

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Myers, the Southwest Florida Museum of History is hosting a special exhibit, ‘Florida in the Civil War,’ featuring framed documents, interactive exhibits, artillery, letters, medical surgical kits, Confederate money, a ceremonial sword, and other artifacts dating from the Civil War era.

Visitors can try on uniforms, hear music of the era and listen to letters exchanged between a soldier and his wife during the war.

Although often overlooked, Florida played an important role in the Civil War. The state sent the largest percentage of troops to fight, and also contributed much-needed supplies, like salt and beef, to soldiers and their families throughout the Confederacy.

Abandoned following the Seminole Wars, Fort Myers was reoccupied by Union soldiers in December 1863 to confiscate livestock from cattle ranches, preventing shipment of beef to Confederate armies. It also was used as a refugee center for escaped slaves and Union sympathizers. The fort was garrisoned by the 2nd Florida Cavalry, a company of the 110th New York Volunteers, and a company of black soldiers of the 2nd United States Colored Infantry.

The Battle of Fort Myers was fought on February 25, 1865, during the last months of the Civil War. Fighting broke out when the Confederate Cattle Guard Battalion demanded the fort to surrender. The demand was refused, leading to the exchange of fire throughout the day. The Cattle Guard Battalion retreated the next morning. One black Union soldier was killed in the skirmish and two Union soldiers were injured. One Confederate soldier was injured.

‘Florida in the Civil War’ is on display January 10 – March 30 at the Southwest Florida Museum of History, located at 2031 Jackson St. in the Fort Myers River District. The museum is open Tues-Sat 10am-5pm. Call 3217430 for information.

A Week On Captiva FEBRUARY 17-21 Inside the Rauschenberg Studio

Centered on the rich art and history of Captiva, A Week On Captiva begins in February with a guided stroll through the island's historic village. The walking tour includes sites and tales from the past 130 years, such as McCarthy's Marina, the site of the island's original mailboat service, Chapel By The Sea and the Historic Gallery at the Captiva Library, plus lunch at the Old Captiva House at 'Tween Waters Inn.

On February 19, BIG ARTS will host a rare tour of the Rauschenberg Studio & Estate.

Acclaimed as one of the leading artists of the 20th century, Bob Rauschenberg came to Captiva in

1970, spending almost 40 years living and working on the island. His 20-acre estate has been transformed into a creative center that welcomes artists from around the world to live, work and create. Participants will experience the magic of Rauschenberg's state-ofthe-art studio, the ‘Ding’ Darling Fish House and the Weeks House. The centerpiece of the week is a three-day plein air workshop, February 19-21. Renowned artist and instructor Douglas David leads this new course in which participants will learn the basic principles of oil painting landscapes and seascapes en plein air — literally ‘in full air’ outdoors. Days one and three take place at the Captiva Community Center, where students will be indoors learning and outdoors on the beach painting. Day two will be spent at the Rauschenberg Residency, painting and learning at sites throughout the estate. Douglas David will lead a plein air class. "BIG ARTS has held plein air workshops before, and offers numerous painting classes each season," adds Harder. "But this is a

very special opportunity not only to learn from a highly regarded plein air artist, but also to be able to experience the Rauschenberg Estate and paint some of the same scenes that inspired Bob's talent for so many years."

BIG ARTS is located at 900 Dunlop Rd, Sanibel. Call 395-0900 for information.

ollis Jeffcoat speaks only one language, one that doesn’t revolve around letters, but instead is made up entirely of color and canvas. For 35 years she has been painting all day, every day. “My work is my life. I’m driven, and I love it,” she admits.

Jeffcoat’s work is widely collected and hangs in several museums in Canada and New York City, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum and the Morgan Library. She’s had 21 solo exhibits, numerous speaking engagements nationally and internationally, and 44 group shows in the United States, Canada and France. Her paintings grace the homes of collectors and the famous, such as the Matese family, Frances Bacon and Joan Mitchell, to name a few.

A fifth generation Floridian, Jeffcoat has lived and taught in Florida, France, Canada, and New York.

At one time she owned an art school in Naples, with friend and fellow artist Maureen Watson.

“I met Hollis in 2001 at an art function in Naples,” says Watson, owner of the Watson MacRae Gallery on Sanibel. “I discovered that she attended the New York Studio School, an acclaimed and rigorous institution. I was familiar with the kind of painting their artists produce. As expected, I found her work to be extremely accomplished. She is a great colorist who infuses her paintings with energy and spirit which moves it to a new level.”

Watson continues, “Whenever a gallery devotes the entire space to one artist, it is a big commitment. It’s a statement about the artists’ talent, stature and exceptional work. Since I’ve owned the gallery, I’ve had only a few solo exhibits and Hollis was one of them. One of the things I admire is that she continues to be true to oil painting even though it may not be as fashionable as other forms of art. She carries on the tradition but in a very contemporary way.”

Jeffcoat is an abstract painter. She explains that abstract art is an acquired taste and is not meant to depict any particular thing. The viewer is expected to feel as well as see the image. “One doesn’t walk up to my paintings and have everything spelled out for them,” Jeffcoat says. “It’s not so representational that everyone sees the same thing. My purpose is to take them on a journey.”

“Everyone is always trying to figure out what an abstract painting is supposed to be,” says Watson. “It’s the natural thing

our brains want to do. In essence this form of art is meant to be felt. Hollis goes beyond abstract expressionism, managing to create a style that is hers alone. Her work always reflects her love of nature therefore is filled with intensity.”

After spending 25 years away from her native Florida, Hollis returned to Sanibel in 2009. “As much as I loved living in New York, it was no longer conducive to my work,” she says. “I paint landscapes, my work is based on nature. Living in a loft in New York just didn’t make sense.”

Growing up in Southwest Florida infused her blood with the love of this lush nature and she took that wherever she traveled. She explains, “My paintings are based on the contact between my sensibility and nature. I know what I’m looking for when I start a painting, but as the process progresses my emotions take over and I let it evolve.”

At first the Jeffcoat family wasn’t excited about their daughter becoming an artist. “They thought I would starve to death,” she says. “They wanted me to

study business. I just chuckled and told them I don’t even speak that language.” She never worried about her annual income. “Maybe it comes from an indifference to security and money. To me, happiness is and always has been, all about art not money.”

Hollis considers herself one of the fortunate few who are born knowing what and who they were going to be when they grew up. “When I was only four years old,” she recalls, “I remember my nanny telling me to get my bicycle out of the way of driveway traffic. At the time, I was coloring. I looked at her with a serious expression and told her that she should never interrupt me when I’m coloring.

“Not long after, I remember looking up at the sun setting and enjoying the

various colors in the sky. As young as I was I had the urge to go inside and paint what I just witnessed. By the time I was in the first grade I announced to my classmates that I was going to be an artist when I grew up.”

At 16, Jeffcoat took her first private art lessons from local artist, Gail Bennett, and continued until graduating from Fort Myers High School. She taught art for Bennett while attending Edison State College, before leaving for the Kansas City Art Institute. Her education continued at the New York Studio School in New York City, where she studied with Mercedes Matter, the founder of the school, as well as Philip Guston, George McNeil and other accomplished artists. She also apprenticed with Joan Mitchell in France for three years. Hollis says, “These artists taught me

structure and made me aware that even the smallest change in a painting can make a huge difference.”

Jeffcoat’s work continues to evolve and remain fresh and is constantly garnering recognition and admirers. She always welcomes new challenges. “There’s always a painting calling to me and at a certain moment I’m sure a sculpture will call,” she says. “I haven’t sculpted since my 20s but it’s a medium that has always interested me.”

Jeffcoat will be one of four artists in a show at the Watson MacRae Gallery on Sanibel in February. “She has a good set of collectors, a good following of people who patiently wait for new pieces. We are expecting a very successful show,” says Watson. •

veron

eron Ennis is like a breath of fresh air. You can feel the positive energy coming from not only her personality, but also her gallery, VEMA (Veron Ennis Modern Art). The lively colors used in her abstract work tell a story — a relaxed, brilliantly colored and welcoming story. As you walk into VEMA you instantly take in the white floors and walls, with art at every turn. The function and flow of the rooms create a relaxed and cozy feel. Veron is inviting, pleasant to talk with and extremely passionate about her work. An acclaimed artist herself, she often reaches out to support other artists in the community. With such a positive attitude, raw talent, grinding work ethic, and commitment to giving back, Ennis is destined to be well known nationally and internationally in the coming years.

Recently Veron attended Art Basel in Miami, not presenting her work, but rather following the art market. Events such as Art Basel provide artists a perfect platform to see what galleries are picking as their most important pieces. “When you’re looking for what galleries you want to start a relationship with, you want galleries already carrying work similar to yours. Sometimes it’s hard to tell from just a website,” Veron explains. Many times the owners of these galleries will be in their own booth. Speaking with them directly can give artists a more complete feel for who they are and how they run their gallery.

As an artist, Veron attends shows such as Art Basel looking for new techniques she can incorporate into her own creative process. She says exposing herself to new applications helps her work progress in new directions. She says, “It’s so exciting to see somebody use a new lacquer or a new way of doing something I can’t figure out. There’s a constant growing when you’re an artist. How can your craft get better and better? Do I get a better sanding technique? Do I use different tools to pull the paint? Do I use different inks? How do I step it up to the next level craft-wise? I’m really looking at how someone binds something to the wood or what wood they’re using, not just what are they making and the subject. Would I use those materials and does that interest me?”

Veron also frequents many art exhibits here in Lee and Collier counties. She is a firm believer attending events close to

home will help the local art culture grow. “It’s such a supportive art community,”she says. “I don’t get the sense of competition. Everyone wants everyone else to rise together. We’re all in the same boat. We’re all on the same team.”

One of the original 12 artists of MAMA (Movement of Aleatoric Modern Artists), Veron explains the movement as one where the artist relies on some version of chance to depict the final work. She describes her own pieces as containing elements of intended result, but also partially created through chance, such as when she pulls paint with a trowel over the work. Chance helps drive the paintings in a direction she can’t control. She explains, “I think of MAMA as an analogy for life, always falling in and out of control and being OK with it. I’m a really slow painter. I will stand and stare for so long drafting a painting. It’ like playing chess. You have to think so many steps forward and imagine where it might be going. As soon as you actually apply something though, all of that changes, and you’re back to square one, changing your entire game plan. So, my work is planned but then it changes and then changes again.”

Representatives from the movement found her and pursued her through the internet. At first, not knowing what the movement was about, she didn’t take their inquiries seriously. But after being persuaded to meet, she welcomed the opportunity to join and has since been instrumental in helping the movement grow.

The first part of creative process for Veron is the color palette. How does it make her feel? She describes color as being her biggest inspiration and she premixes large amounts of custom shades into jars before starting any painting. This simple step allows her more freedom in the composition. She can be confident there will be enough of that particular shade throughout the creative process. “It’s very distracting to have to go back and forth comparing a color to match.”

At times it can take Veron all day to mix the perfect shade of a particular color, sighting the importance of perfection. Veron also likes to go through magazines and color palettes online, viewing what graphic designers are using as the latest color schemes. She uses this material as inspiration for future shades she may create. Many times she finds herself gravitating to similar colors. She believes the colors she chooses show a very true representation of where she is at mentally and emotionally. Veron describes herself as a positive person and she enjoys

making work that conveys that feeling. She doesn’t paint when she is upset or feeling negative. She doesn’t want that out there. She says, “Painting while negative just solidifies that feeling in the world.” It is not surprising to find she has helped name and create a movement called OPT. (Open Positive Transference). Started in early 2013, OPT is explained as not wanting to put out art created during a negative state into society permanently. After conversations with several like-minded artists, she and her colleagues decided they couldn’t be the only artists making work in this way —there must be many. Veron says OPT is an open movement —anyone can say they’re an OPTist.

So, how does Veron come to complete a piece? With abstract work, the subject is typically free-flowing. Is there a natural stopping point? “I love answering this question,” says Veron. “I teach this in my Intro to Basic Composition class. You train yourself to recognize when you’re comfortable or done finding issues. You want to give the viewer something to do, keep them busy. The eye should be led around the work, but stay in it, not going somewhere else. If my eye keeps getting stuck somewhere on a painting, I have to determine if it’s because it’s great or because something’s wrong. Maybe I need to add something or completely cover it. I’ve had to completely cover over an entire area I’ve worked on for weeks. But once you do that, it’s fresh and new. That part is solved. It’s like having a talk with the piece to see what you should do.”

One of Veron’s biggest goals is to make abstract art appeal to the masses on a very basic level. She wants the work to be more approachable. “I think it can be really intimidating,” she admits. “Abstract work can totally freak people out. It makes them uncomfortable.”

Much of the time the responses Veron gets to her work are pleasant in nature and often she finds people will walk up and want to touch the work. She says, “It may be because on a basic level it doesn’t look like you could ruin it. You’re not going to put fingerprints on it. Since childhood we’re trained not to touch things.” She continues, “The work is bright. I think that’s attractive, especially to children. Also, I work on wood. Its tangible and soft, a natural fiber I think everyone can relate to.”

With VEMA opening in March of 2013, Veron has seen many new faces stopping by to view her work. Her Fort Myers gallery is located in what is referred to as The Art Loft in the

upstairs mezzanine of the Edwards Building on the Alliance for the Arts campus.

Veron works heavily with the Alliance by volunteering and supporting shows. It’s an opportunity for her to give back. “The Alliance has been supporting me since I moved here,” she notes. “They’re so nice. They truly want artists to do better and do everything they can to help their careers. Plus, they are an excellent source of information. I love the gallery being a part of them. When they have openings we try to have openings. I say we, including the artists next door. It’s a little community up here. We all work on and promote this specific area.

As a curator, Veron suggests to emerging artists that they be as professional as possible. “Sometimes the business of art can be a mystery. The rules are hard to

find out,”she advises. “I would say the first thing these days is to have a website. It just makes life easier being able to see the work, your bio and your art statement. It’s a very international business now. You can get into galleries in any country.” As an example, Veron is currently represented in Dusseldorf, Germany by the Von Fraunberg Art Gallery and was recently mentioned in British Vogue magazine.

She continues, “You also want a good relationship with the galleries you work with. It’s a partnership. You have to trust a lot with them. I love Lauren and Emily at HW Gallery in Naples. They’re really great people. I like calling them and seeing how they are doing. I bring them new work and they are excited about it. It’s not like I just want to be in any gallery. I want to meet them, feel their energy and decide whether or not I

can have a good relationship with them.

Veron also suggests saving documents. “I can’t stress that enough,” she advises. “Organize and photograph your work as soon as you are finished and make it a quality photograph. Have your biography updated. Make sure everything is current. When you’re applying for a deadline, it may be in a week because you just found out about it. You can just click and the information is ready. It’s a lot of work when you’re just starting, but as long as you keep up with it, it becomes a lot easier.”

Veron suggests to young artists that they get out there and be seen by submitting work to competitions, group shows and open calls. Making a mailing list as soon as possible is vital. You want to invite people to shows that will come see your work in person. This helps build your resume which should

also include your exhibition list, where you’ve been published, and the like. The process doesn’t change much as an artist becomes more popular, but applying to national competitions, and international competitions, especially where there’s cash rewards, helps an artist’s career immensely.

She seeks out and applies to new opportunities using websites such as CallForEntry.org or Re-title.com and says there are many websites out there to help young artists move up the ranks.

Veron explains opening VEMA has been an incredible social space. “We host what is called Art Talks here at the gallery,” she notes. Along with her neighboring artists and gallery owners, VEMA invites artists and art enthusiasts for an open discussion of the their community, the business of art, and everything related. “The talks mean so much to me,” she says. The talks include helping

emerging artists discuss issues they may be having getting their work seen, what steps to take, what's coming up for one artist or another, how they do what they do. “We help each other create this market.”she says. “We make sure we have our bases covered and we promote each other. We meet new artists. It’s kind of like a live Facebook. Instead of it always being on a screen, there’s discussion. People come and we talk face-to-face about artwork.”

She admits, “There’s really no goal. We’re not trying to make a sale or anything like that. It’s nothing about profit on that night. I think that’s what’s relieving to people that come. It’s not a show. When you have a show, there’s

pressure, you’re ‘on.’ At Art Talks we’re not ‘on.‘ We’re relaxed. We encourage visitors to bring their own beer and wine. This is a format where we can all be very open with each other, just be together without it being about one person in particular.

Another project Veron has been recently working on can be viewed at Toccanation.com. “I was looking at Twitter campaigns and trying to crack that code,” she explains. “How do you promote yourself on something billions of people are on? Influencers on Twitter tend to look for give-away items. It provides them something they can promote to their followers. So, what do you give away as a visual artist? I can’t spend hundreds of dollars printing and mailing for free. So, I thought the only thing you could give away was something digital. At Toccanation.com you can download free artwork for your IPhone or desktop

background. I thought, I wouldn’t go to a website that only had one person on it. So, I asked several artists such as David Acevedo, Xavier Brignoni, Tony Myles, and several others to be a part of this group. They made their digital backgrounds from their work and I designed the website from scratch. This website is sort of a collaborative community, with fun, free art. I need that balance. What can I give back? How can I make this fun?

To see Veron’s work in person, you can always visit her at her gallery, VEMA, at the Alliance for the Arts, located at 10091 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. For information, call 849-7772. •

A Regional Affair O

PERA AFICIONADOSin Southwest Florida now have more choices from which to fulfill their operatic needs. Gulfshore Opera has opened its proverbial doors, and their inaugural season is sure to please opera fans young and old. Headed by Steffanie Pearce, a founder of Opera Naples, this new venture is a regional affair with performances scheduled at venues in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties. They received a warm reception back in November debuting for audiences with selections from Viva Verdi’s Requiem, featuring over 100 performers onstage. Opening night was in Naples at North Naples Church, followed by repeat performances within the next three days at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in Punta Gorda and Harborside Convention Center in downtown Fort Myers. Each presentation was also augmented by the use of a video screen so audiences were able to see the artists up close. Now with the season off and running, we spoke with Gulfshore Opera founder Steffanie Pearce about the concept and lineup ahead.

“I’ve always believed that providing high level professional product and keeping prices affordable to the general public is the way to go,” Ms. Pearce ruminates, “We also present a variety of repertoire every season to attract both someone who’s new to opera as well as the aficionado who just wants something different.” She adds, “When I was separated from the company I founded, I started thinking about all the things I wish I could have done. I turned it into an opportunity to restructure on the principles that I believed in from the beginning and make it the regional company that I wanted it to be. I had only thought about Collier and Lee counties, then I found out about this lovely theatre in Punta Gorda, the Charlotte Performing Arts Center.” Located on the campus of Charlotte High School, CPAC offers 850 seats and will be one of two locations for Gulfshore Opera’s only full scale production this season, Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. Mikado will be performed in

English, somewhat of a rarity for this genre, and ticket prices are half of what you would normally pay for this level of production.

“Gilbert and Sullivan is considered operetta, which means light opera. That was right around the turn of the century when there wasn’t Broadway or music theatre yet. It was the immediate predecessor to music theatre.,” she explains. “It does have dialogue, so it’s not so challenging as Puccini and Verdi melodies. It’s very familiar and very accessible to the general public.”.

Featuring traditional sets, costumes and specialists of the Gilbert and Sullivan New York repertoire, Mikado will be performed February 28 at CPAC and March 5 & 6 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Bonita Springs.

The new year kicks off with a special gala fundraising concert on January 4, featuring tenor Michael Fabiano performing in Hayes Hall at Artis–Naples. Attendees are invited to meet Mr. Fabiano at a wine reception after the show.

Opera fans can also look forward to future performances at Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers. Ms. Pearce paints the picture: to be able to park, shop, have dinner, watch sunset over the harbor and catch a show. “It’s got gorgeous lobbies and it’s

right on the waterfront. I am very grateful that the Fort Myers Redevelopment Agency saw the potential of adding Gulfshore Opera to the offerings. The mayor told me that our timing is perfect to go with their redevelopment,” she emphasizes.

Pearce stresses that Gulfshore Opera is committed to having a presence is all three counties. “We’re working with the school up in Charlotte County affiliated with CPAC. We’re doing an internship program with their theatre and choir kids. In Collier County we’re at Artis–Naples, Barbara B. Mann in Lee and CPAC in Charlotte County. I’m in talks with the major venues in southwest Florida to do a grand opera production next year.”

Besides expanding offerings to a tri-county audience, Gulfshore Opera is also opening the door to opera and general enrichment for atrisk kids with the Gulfshore Harmony Choir.

“We’re members of the El Sistema network, an outreach program that is really a social program, but it uses music as the conduit to help build a more harmonious community,” she explains. “Being a resident of Collier County and aware of the socioeconomic demography, there are some isolated pockets of our population that will really benefit from this type of a program. What we’ve

chosen to do is focus on recent immigrant families, mostly Haitian and South American families. The program teaches music, but it also teaches group dynamics and self esteem. It’s an opportunity to blend in with the new environment and to have mentors that maybe can help develop the child and the family to be more connected to the larger community.”

She adds that the program is free to families, with the first nucleo (choir) already in place with Artis–Naples and the program reaching to Lee County next. “We’ve identified a community center in Fort Myers where perhaps next year we’ll open a second nucleo,” she says. “One hundred percent of that is funded through contributions to the company, so we need to make it work like that ‘build it and they will come’ philosophy.”

“I’ve been spending a good five hours each Saturday going and picking up the kids and chaperoning the program. The kids have gone from being really quiet to really joyful and open,” she notes, adding, “I’m getting

as much out of it as the kids are.”

Cape Coral based Friends of the Opera are also looking forward to the upcoming season. Until now bus trips to performances in Miami were their only option to enjoy live opera. The group’s President, Robert S.Withey says that Gulfshore Opera is “an exciting, worthwhile and much desired boon to Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties’ cultural life, and a joy to the ears for all lovers of beautiful singing and the pleasures of live opera!” For more information about Friends of the Opera, call 945-6117.

Alongside Ms. Pearce, the Gulfshore Opera artistic team includes former Southwest Florida Symphony Conductor, Paul Nadler and Musical Director and Chorus Master, Trent Brown. Along with a committed board of directors, it looks like Steffanie Pearce’s vision of a regional opera presence is coming to fruition. Pop Art was a term first coined in 1955 as a new art movement, often characterized by imagery borrowed from pop culture, packaging and the media, that emerged in London. By the late 1950s the movement was sweeping New York City and by the late 1960s became the dominant avant-garde style. At once a celebration and satire of post-war consumerism. This exhibition features works by the most acclaimed and popular artists of the Pop Art movement: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Larry Rivers, Jim Dine, and Robert Indiana. foosanerartmuseum.org

For nearly seven decades, while history was in the making all around him, Norman Rockwell chronicled our changing society in the small details and nuanced scenes of ordinary people in everyday life, providing a personalized interpretation of American identity. Created for the covers and pages of our nation’s periodicals rather than for the walls of galleries and museums, Rockwell’s contributions to our visual legacy, many of them now icons of American culture, have found a perma- nent place in our national psyche. ‘Lost on the River’ features new songs written with longlost lyrics Bob Dylan wrote 45 years ago.

The Year’s Best

IN 2014,one of the best albums of the year ressurrected songs lost for some 45 year, while another paid tribute to a beloved artist lost last year. One of the best CDs of the year was by a guy in his mid-70s, while another was by a garage band whose accumulated ages are about equal. And three of the best CDs of the past year are by groups of sisters, while another is by an entire family.

THE NEW BASEMENT TAPES Lost On The River NEWHARVESTRECORDS

T-Bone Burnett recently came upon unfinished lyrics written by a 27 year old Bob Dylan during the time he was living in Woodstock and recording with The Band in the basement of a big pink house, songs and fragments that were never recorded and long forgotten. Burnett gathered a group of musicians who had previously not worked together and asked them to write music for these lyrics and record an album —all in two weeks.

The results are astounding.

T-Bone brought together his old pal Elvis Costello and some of today’s most exciting young artists: Marcus Mumford, My Morning Jackets’ Jim James, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. The group gelled quickly and, much like the original ‘Basement Tapes,’ embraced the looseness and sense of fun, collaborating freely and playing various instruments in differing combinations on different songs.

Lucky for us all, in addition to an outstanding CD, the sessions were filmed by Showtime. The documentary is an incredible record of the joys and frustrations even the biggest stars and acclaimed artists experience during the creative process as well as how these particularly talented musicians approach their work.

For me, the star of the project is Marcus Mumford, who despite deep doubts, in the end writes and performs the very best of a collection of outstanding songs. HIGHLIGHTS: Mumford’s ‘Kansas City’ and ‘When I Get My Hands on You,’ James ‘Nothing To It,’ Goldsmith’s ‘Florida Key,’ and Giddens’ ‘Spanish Mary’ and ‘Lost on the River.’

ANGALEENA PRESLEY American Middle Class SLATECREEKRECORDS

If Bruce Springsteen was born a girl in Kentucky instead of a boy in New Jersey, he just might be writing the songs that Angaleena Presley has released on this, her debut album. Much like Springsteen, Presley paints a picture of a modern middle-class America captured between the

lofty promises and grounded realities of everyday life. Her songs are honest examinations of the human condition, telling stories about the lives of society’s winners and losers, about ordinary people seeking excitement, if not freedom. The title track, ‘American Middle Class’ is as powerful an anthem as anything Springsteen has written.

As a writer and a singer she is an original, but as a reference she can be compared to some of the greatest women in American music: Lucinda Williams (‘Blessing and a Curse,’ ‘Drunk’), Dolly Parton (‘Knocked Up,’ ‘Pain Pills’), Sheryl Crow (‘’All I Ever Wanted,’ ’Ready to Surrender’), Bonnie Raitt (‘Ain’t No Man’).

Angaleena Presley is the real deal.

As part of the Pistol Annies, along with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe, her talents are only scratching the surface. With her debut solo album she proves that she’s destined to become a star. HIGHLIGHTS: ‘American Middle Class,’ ‘Ain’t No Man,’ ‘Drunk,’ ‘Blessing and a Curse,’ ‘Ready to Surrender.’

DR. JOHN

Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch CONCORDRECORDS

Now making arguably the best records of his long and illustrious career, Dr. John celebrates the music of fellow New Orleans icon, Louis Armstrong, backed by a great band and special guests such as fellow Crescent City stars, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and trumpeters Nicholas Payton and Terence Blanchard, as well as Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singers, Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the McCrary Sisters. Dr. John reinvents Armstrong staples such as ‘Wonderful World’, ‘Mack the Knife,’ ‘When You’re Smiling,’ and ‘I’ve Got the World on a String’ and revives lesser known gems such as ‘Sweet Hunk o’ Trash’ and ‘Dippermouth Blues.’ Passing it forward, Dr. John, with his unique voice and devilish attitude, proves that the music Satchmo was popularizing a century ago is as entertaining and vital as it ever was. HIGHLIGHTS: ‘Mack the Knife,’ ‘Gutbucket Blues,’ ‘That’s My Home.’

THE ORWELLS Disgraceland CANVASBACK

In the great American punk rock tradition, The Orwells have taken up the mantle of the likes of Iggy Pop, New York Dolls, The Replacements, Nirvana, The Strokes, and The

Angaleena Presley is in the Pistol Annies with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe, but this is her debut solo release.

arts MUSIC

Ramones, and are running with it full speed ahead. Most songs clock in at about three minutes, packed with all the teen angst, suburban frustration and garage band confidence that you’d expect from a bunch of high-schoolers from the mid-west, with songs about sex and partying. Play loud and let yourself go. Whether you’re 20 or 60, rock’n’roll like this is the great age equalizer. HIGHLIGHTS: ‘Southern Comfort,’ ‘The Rightgeous One, ‘Let It Burn,’ ‘Who Needs You.’

JOSEPH ARTHUR

Lou

VANGUARDRECORDS

Lou Reed passed away in 2014. One of the most revered of the rock ‘n’ roll icons, he was an inspiration to countless younger musicians and songwriters –Joseph Arthur among them. This is a wonderful tribute from a friend for a mentor, the album highlights the subtle simplicity of Reed’s music as well as the cool dryness of his poetry.

Arthur covers Lou’s songs with care. Whether it’s Reed’s hits (‘Walk on the Wild Side,’ ‘Satellite of Love,’ ‘Heroin’) or lesser known classics (‘Pale Blue Eyes,’ ‘Coney Island Baby,’ ‘Dirty Blvd.’), his versions, acoustic and sparse, are all renditions Lou would love. HIGHLIGHTS :‘ NYC Man,’ ‘Stephanie Says,’ ‘Sword of Damocles’).

JULES SHEAR Longer to Get to Yesterday

CUSSYINACASERECORDS

Jules Shear is a hopeless romantic, and after listening to his new release you might be as well. Shear has a knack for writing infectious melodies with magnetic hooks; his lyrics are simple, sweet and personal; his arrangements are lushly textured. He writes pop songs with panache, and sings them with an intimacy that makes you care. The most romantic of all here is ‘Let’s Walk,’ where he invites his love for a special winter stroll through a city blanketed in snow.

Shear has always been influenced by Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys’ harmonies and it’s never been more obvious than here, with songs like the title track, ‘Let’s Walk,’ ‘You Don’t Love Me,’ and ‘California.’ HIGHLIGHTS: ‘Nothing Compared to the Moon,’ ‘Let’s Walk’, ‘Not Until Then,’ ‘More Reason Than the Wind.’

THE HADEN TRIPLETS THIRDMANRECORDS

The Hadens make music steeped in the Americana traditions of Appalachian bluegrass and southern gospel music traditions. Produced by and with Ry

Cooder’s band behind them, it’s a celebration of the music of their grandparents, the popular music of the depression and war years. Singing with three beautiful and distinct voices, and the most gorgeous harmonies, they cover songs by Webb Pierce, Ralph Stanley, Kitty Wells, Bill Monroe, the Louvin Brothers, and the Carter Family. HIGHLIGHTS : ‘Single Girl, Married Girl,’ ‘My Baby’s Gone,’ ‘Billy Bee.’

KENNY BARRON & DAVE HOLLAND The Art of Conversation BLUENOTERECORDS

The album showcases the remarkable talents and exquisite tastes of pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland. Barron’s playing is pretty standard straight-on bop and post-bop, while Holland has often delved into more avant-garde jazz, but here we find the two masters meeting comfortably to make jazz that anybody and everybody can love. Barron swings the melodies while Holland drives the rhythms, each playing off and pushing each other. Music for quieter times, it’s a conversation worth listening to.

HIGHLIGHTS: ‘The Only One,’ ‘In Walked Bud,’ ‘ Seascape.’

THE SECRET SISTERS Put Your Needle Down REPUBLICRECORDS

With seemingly effortless harmonies and the guidance of T-Bone Burnett, sisters Lydia & Laura Rogers have crafted an album of uptempo country rock (‘Rattle My Bones,’ ‘River Jordon), gothic ballads (‘Iuka’’) and jazzy blues (‘Dirty Lie,’ a song Burnett had them finish for Bob Dylan), and mid-60s girl groups (‘Black and Blue, ‘I Cannot Find a Way’). Like a female version of the Everly Brothers, they have a sound that could be described as a cross somewhere between Loretta Lynn and Lana Del Ray –sexy and strong, down home and dangerous. HIGHLIGHTS : ‘Rattle My Bones,’ ‘Dirty Lies,’ ‘Black and Blue,’ ‘Good Luck, Good Night, Goodbye.’

THOMPSON Family FANTASYRECORDS

It must be hard growing up in a family overflowing with talent. The pressure to be creative, original and successful can be an overbearing bur-

den. Lucky for the Thompson children they don’t need to worry much. Their talents, though possibly not as formidable as their parents, are remarkable nonetheless. Teddy Thompson addresses the issue immediately on the album’s title and opening track, singing, ‘Sean Lennon, you know what I mean.’

Although Richard and Linda Thompson are in fact legendary rock musicians (founding members of 1960s folk-rock band, Fairport Convention), their children, Teddy and his sister Kami, are talented artists in their own right, skillful songwriters, exceptional vocalists and accomplished musicians.

The album includes two songs each from father Richard Thompson, mother Linda Thompson, son Teddy and daughter Kami, as well as one song each from half-brother Jack and cousin, Zak Hobbs. Richard’s songs showcase his dry wit as he ponders the state of the world, both politically (‘That’s Enough’) and personal (‘One Life at a Time’); Linda’s her haunting tenderness (‘Perhaps We Can Sleep’). Teddy and Kami, joined by her husband and Chrissie Hynde’s guitarist, James walbourne, each have one ballad and one rocker. Richard Thompson’s guitar playing, as always, is exceptional. HIGHLIGHTS : Richard’s ‘That’s Enough,’ Teddy’s ‘Right,’ Kami’s ‘Careful.’

JOHN HAMMOND Timeless PALMETTORECORDS

When considering the Best CDs of 2013 I included John Hammond’s ‘Timeless,’ not realizing that I had been listening to an advance copy and the official release date was not until January 2014. Because ‘Timeless’ is such a great album, an excellent recording of an intimate performance in a small club by one of the truly great bluesman of all time, I had to include Hammond’s CD again this year in the list of the Best CDs of 2014. HIGHLIGHTS : ‘Further on Up the Road,’ ‘That Nasty Swing,’ and Tom Wait’s ‘No One Can Forgive Me But My Baby’ and ‘Jockey Full of Bourbon.’ •
