Original Edison Bridge Opened 85 Years Ago

Eighty five years ago, on Tho mas Edison’s final birthday – February 11, 1931– a ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of a newly constructed bridge named in his honor. Spanning the Caloosahatchee River, the structure acknowledged the famous inventor’s place in Fort Myers’ history. A group of local girls dressed in white escorted Edison’s car to the bridge opening from his home. Florida Governor Doyle E. Carlton and Mayor of Fort Myers Josiah

Fitch delivered short speeches. Mayor Fitch, echoing the sentiments of many in the crowd, proclaimed:

“Today we are touching a high spot in the history of Fort Myers. Whatever efforts we make here today to honor Mr. Edison will fall short of his honor to us.”

Thomas Edison then untied the green and orange ribbon, officially opening the Edison Bridge.

The Tamiami Trail

In the 19th century Fort Myers was somewhat isolated from its neighbors. The train did not connect to the city until 1904, and it was not until 1924 that a wooden bridge first crossed the Caloosahatchee River into Fort Myers. Meanwhile, in 1916, work had begun to continue roadwork to the east, connecting Tampa with Miami. The project became known as the ‘Tamiami Trail.’

Twelve years, $8 million dollars, and almost three million sticks of dynamite later, the Tamiami Trail was completed.

Increased traffic rendered the existing wooden bridge obsolete and prompted construction of the Edison Bridge in 1928.

The ‘Believe It or Not’ Bridge

Ironically, when completed in 1931, the Edison Bridge had no electric lights. City officials were further embarrassed in 1935, when a nationwide Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ cartoon lampooned the bridge. Over fifty lampposts were added in 1937, creating a fitting tribute to the inventor which it memorialized. An original Edison Bridge lamppost is on display at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates museum.

Conspiracy Teams With High School Robotics Club for New Production

Theatre Conspiracy’s season of all female playwrights continues with the opening of ‘Kayak,’ by Jordan Hall on January 7 at the Foulds Theatre at Lee County Alliance of the Arts.

‘Kayak’ was winner of the 2010 Samuel French Canadian Playwrights Contest.

Alone on a vast stretch of water, BMW-driving, bleachedblond Annie Iversen teeters alone in a kayak. Having set out to save her son from the dangers of his radical environmentalist girlfriend, she recounts the strange chain of events that left her stranded in her son's old kayak. Catapulted through a storm of memories, Annie struggles to cling to what’s ‘right’ in her ever-shrinking world.

For this production Theatre Conspiracy has enlisted the assistance of the Mariner High School's Robotics club to create a ‘robotic Kayak’ that can be remotely controlled to travel around the stage. Two members of the club, Robert Herring and Josh Wiggins, have spent the last month and a half converting a used motorized wheelchair. They have added remote control capability as well as extra battery life so the “robot” can last for the full time of the show.

Performances of ‘Kayak’ will be on January 7-9, 14-16, 21, 22 &

23 at 8pm, with one matinee at 2pm on January 17.

Opening night, January 7 is ‘pay what you will’ and Thursdays are ‘buy one get one half off.’ Women under 41 years of age enjoy special discounted tickets for every performance.

Theatre Conspiracy is donating 50% of opening night ticket sales to benefit the Florida Coastal & Ocean Coalition, a group of organizations working together to conserve, protect and restore Florida’s coastal and marine environment.

Foulds Theater is on the Alliance for the Arts campus, located at 1009 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Call 936-3239 for information.

David Acevedo art & community

he Alliance for the Arts, located off McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers, hosts a variety of events and exhibitions in its main building as well as being home to a number of art studios in the Edwards building toward the rear of the campus.

I find myself ascending the stairwell in the building, making my way toward finding the artist David Acevedo. At first, I enter the wrong door. Apparently,I found David’s personal studio and gallery, but not the location of where he spends most of his time, The Union Artist Studios, which is conveniently located across the hall. After giving a call out a few times and realizing nobody was in, I made my way across the hall and found David in a back room comfortably behind a large table, working.

Puerto Rican born, David graduated in 1998 from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus, and made his way here to Southwest Florida after being offered employment in 2000.

David opened his first gallery in downtown Fort Myers in 2007, which eventually became daas Gallery. David is also one of the co-founders of the Fort Myers Art Walk and served on its committee until 2012.

As an artist, David’s work has been on exhibition in the United States, Europe and Asia, but Fort Myers is where he calls home.

I asked him to describe what it is he

does. “I don’t know if I have a style that is set in a specific movement, but I can say that it’s quasi-abstract and expressionist, if you want to call it something,” he explains, “but I never even think about it when I produce my work.” People tend to also describe it as expressionist with a little bit of pop art combined, sometimes surrealistic. “It’s just a mixdependingonhow I’m feeling” he says.

Currently, David is working on a series that will break away from his normal and will be based around portraits, faces and facial expressions. The portraits will not be of anyone specifically, but just what pops into his mind.

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 17 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016

He intends to create at least 30 pieces in this series, affording him the option of picking and choosing his favorites to exhibit. Normally, around 25 pieces are chosen for a show. He feels that number really brings an exhibition together.

I asked for more detailed hints as to what we can expect from the current series. What are the pieces looking like so far? He tells me they will keep that vibrant use of color that he is known for, but the theme and subject is totally different. “You can still see me in the painting,” he assures me. “Sometimes, when you do abstract expressionist work for a long time, people seem to think that’s all you can do from a technical aspect of painting.” He continues, “ I still want to have my signature on them,

but still keep the technicality to the work.”

I was lucky enough to view one of the pieces he was in the middle of working on. It definitely has that Acevedo color and vibrancy like always, but with a very stoic look on the subject’s face and geometric, decorative textures. Very interesting.

I asked what was the inspiration for him to move into portraits? “It’s one of those things that sort of come and go,” he said. “One day, I finished an ‘Intuitive Praxis’ exhibition, which closed in May at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. I had worked on the same thing for so long, like a year and a half working on the same old paintings. I opened a new canvas and I just randomly started creating a

face. I remembered back to my technical training from college, the basics, from out of the books. I had to go back because I hadn’t been doing that kind of work for such a long time. The first one was a good painting. It sold right away. Then I was just like, ‘maybe I should do a series.’ It just went from there and it progressed from that point.”

In 2012, David co-founded Union Artist Studios, where you can find a variety of artists sharing space. “Union Artist Studios is a labor of love,” he says, “It’s not a co-op, but like a co-op space if you think about it.” He adds, “Technically, it’s not a gallery, it is working studios. I rented this space from the Alliance. I figured I could have artists with me here sharing the wealth. So, it became a project that I administer in my free time.”

“Everybody here helps pay the rent and they do what they want with their space. The benefits from being in a common studio like this is we feed off each other. Jeffrey Scott Lewis, another artist who works here in the studio, will come in here and talk to me a little bit about what I’m doing, a little bit of this and that, and that gives me inspiration. The same thing I do to him, or I go to

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016 18 www.ftmyersmagazine.com
www.ftmyersmagazine.com 19 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016

Diana Ripoll or Mark Holman. All the artists in the space share that whole inspiration thing.”

I asked about how The Union Artist Studios chooses who shares the space? David explains, “At first I did it on my own. I had no choice because I was the only one here. Paul Rodino, another managing artist here, would help throw ideas out when selecting artists. After that it’s become more of a juried process, so it’s fair. Everybody in the studio puts in their input to see if that person should be in or not. We do it as a collective.”

I asked about the turnover of artists through Union? “Not that often because once the artist is in the space, they tend to like it and stay here, he says. “I think it’s been a year and a half since the last artist traded out. We immediately filled up the space.”

The Alliance for the Arts’ annual Artists Studio Tour on February 27 begins on the Alliance campus in the Edwards building with The Union Artist Studio and VEMA. He tells me, “We get our studios ready, all nice and neat to welcome the people doing the tour.”

The Union Artist Studio also holds classes. “We do Wine & Art nights, usually the first Saturday of the month. I’ve been grateful to have such a response to it,” he says. “We do it right here in the studio. We move everything around and set up the space so that we can hold a group of about 15. It’s a follow-along class, mostly. I teach some technique. It’s just a lot of fun.”

He adds, “I also do private classes where I have students come in and take instruction from me individually. I teach at the Alliance for the Arts, too.” Union Artist Studio also offers a photography class.

As I said earlier, I originally walked into another studio across the hall belonging to David. I asked what the benefits were of having the extra space. Laughing, he explains, “I don’t mean to be greedy. The thing is I only have space for so many paintings. I had a storage unit in Cape Coral, but it wasn’t suitable. If I was here and I wanted to show you something as a client, I would have to schedule another time for you to come and see it. So having that space allows me to have a quasistorage and exhibition area to change it up every once in a while. He adds, “Plus, I have a meeting space not as cluttered as my studio.”

What’s next for David? He tells me, “I’m looking for more gallery representation, even outside of Florida. I recently had a chance to show in Hong Kong for the ‘Worlds Collide Collaborative Exhibition,’ which was a big deal for me. I’m currently in negotiation with the owner of that space. iIt’s actually not a gallery, but a very cool store which houses a variety of hand made work and many beautiful items. I’m hoping for a permanent presence there. It’s called the 22 Degrees North Concept Store. It was a great experience.“

“I’m submitting a lot of applications right now. Typically, I’m not one to put in for a lot of juried shows for some reason. I’m just really strange like that. I’ve been a juror in a lot of shows, so I know from experience that the painting or the piece could be great but its just not something fitting with that particular show. I’m trying to get a little more involved.”

The last thing we discussed was Art Walk, which David helped launch. He believes that Art Walk has been a great incentive to get people out and downtown, the battery behind things that are happening right now along with the redevelopment of the area that hosts Art Walk.

David is very proud of how Art Walk and proud to be a part of the Alliance for the Arts. “I’m just happy to be a Fort Myers resident,” he admits, “I do feel that this area has a strange kind of vibe to it. Artists just find each other here. This area hasn’t been exploited yet and there are a lot of artists. I believe in unity and supporting each other. I just want people to see it and realize that if you support the arts more and more, we could be a big deal.” •

Sigler art & music

It’s not uncommon to hear music wafting out of artist Tammra Sigler’s Naples studio. It’s also a sure sign that she’s having a creative moment. She remembers when the music took over, “I have always painted to music in the background, but this time I found myself actually painting the music, painting what I heard.” She recalls early on wanting to use the dirtiest music she could think of, which at the time was Lou Reed.

“He’s so without borders and uncensored. I put on the music, then drew everything I heard.” She continues, “I would listen to one song

on a loop and let it generate the print. When the print was done then I would move to the next song/painting. After Lou Reed, I moved on to Laurie Anderson. The next year I painted to Philip Glass, inspired by the ballet that I had seen at the Phil, ‘In the Upper Room.’ There were nine dances in the Twyla Tharp ballet and I made nine prints, four of which were selected last year for the Florida Contemporary exhibit at Artis-Naples.” She’s also completed a music series of Yo Yo Ma performing Bach’s “Unaccompanied Cello”, which is available on note cards in the Artis-Naples gift shop.

Her newest exhibit, running January 8-30 at Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers, showcases Tammra’s musical inspiration in very contemporary abstract works. Included are the pieces ‘I Will Wait – Mumford and Sons’ and a couple inspired by the band Fun., ‘We are Young – Fun’ and ‘Out on the Town – Fun.”

With over 50 years of artistic experience, the showcase is, as Tammra puts it, quite the eclectic collection. “This show ranges from 2007’s flower series to my newest work of 2015, which actually incorporates torn paper, she says. “I typically paint in series, and I have different things going on in my work. The work changes but my mark stays the same. What you get visually is different,” adding that her latest works incorporate the use of Sharpies, ushering in a change in attitude.

“There’s quite a range from work more accessible and recognizable to pieces that are totally abstract. In my music series, I paint what I hear. In the flower series, I paint what I see. It gives

you kind of 180 degrees of the visual experience. The energy or enthusiasm for my materials stays the same.”

Tammra’s latest venture, featured in her exhibition at the Alliance, is threedimensional, where she’s drawn or printed on paper, then torn it up and recreated it into a paper sculpture.

A good number of Ms. Sigler’s works are monotype/drawings utilizing the aforementioned paper, a high quality archival cotton that is soft enough to be flexible and weighted, almost like a towel. This technique involves the collaboration of a printmaker who is present and ready to transfer her paintings as soon as they’re complete. This way the oil paints that she uses will transfer successfully before they start to dry.

“I do my prints in Baltimore at Towson University. These are monotypes, which are one of a kind singular prints.” She explains, “I work on a plexi plate, and paint with oils directly on it. I tell the printmaker I’m ready, and she prepares the paper with water. It’s gorgeous heavy cotton

paper. She soaks it in a tub, then dries it with towels and a rolling pin to just damp. Then she takes my plate and sets it on the press bed, very carefully setting the now very flexible paper over the plate. She then covers it with felt blankets and turns the wheel, sending the bed under the press rollers. It comes out the other side and the image from the plate is pressed into the paper. Now the paint has been transferred. This is also called a monoprint.”

Some of Tammra’s works are the result of what is known as ‘ghost prints,’ or the second or third print from an original plate.

Another important factor in this process is the printmaker’s personality. Tammra describes her collaboration with the printmaker as one where that person really has to set aside their personal taste in order to share and support her vision, adding that a good printer has to have a certain selflessness. Most of the works featured in January’s exhibition were created using this technique. Inspiration also comes from within. Tammra recalls, “I was driving to the press and deciding what I was going to print. I never know what I’m going to do until I face the paper. The first thing I asked myself was, ‘What is the essential quality of my prints?’ The prints are very clean and pristine. My work is very organic, but the printing and final statement are precise and clean.”

Tammra’s skill and talents are the product of many years’ experience. Working as a professional artist and teacher for the better part of 50 years, her career began in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, where Tammra earned her BFA with honors in painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art after attending Syracuse University’s School of Fine Arts in New York State. Her work was noticed in a show not long after graduating by one of Baltimore’s top galleries, and her career has taken off ever since.

Tammra humbly admits that she was very lucky, but it has to be more than luck to have your work featured in permanent collections in museums such as the National Women in the Arts Museum in Washington, DC and Baltimore Museum of Art, as well as numerous private and corporate collections around the world. Her works have been featured in exhibitions at many Naples studios, including The von Liebig Art Center, where she teaches classes in expressionistic painting.

And now there are hives. As in

beehives, Tammra’s latest artistic exploration. “I consider myself a ‘mark maker’ when I draw,” she admits. “I became interested in how many small particles can make up a whole.” She took an interest in the massive and changing forms birds make when they fly. ‘Swarms and Swamps,’ Tammra’s first Florida painting (featured in the Alliance exhibition) is her exploration of that concept. She adds, “It is probably my first painting that actually deals with Florida imagery, per se.” The swarms grew into hives and a new direction for her paintings. She found these hives represented in the news as well.

“I was watching the horrible thing in San Bernardino. The policemen were huddled, making their own ‘hive.’ she notes, adding, “I’m sure there’s no one else in the world thinking like that! I think and see abstractly.”

Tammra recalls, “When I was a student of 18 or 19 I’d go to the paint store for new tubes of paint. I’d buy the three colors that I needed. Then I would ask myself, ‘What is the most obnoxious color you see here?’ And I’d buy it and make it work.”

Another source of inspiration are the

quotes Tammra collects and posts on the wall in her studio. She explains, “Because I teach I share them a lot with my students. One of them that really describes my attitude is from the actor, Christopher Walken, ‘First I figure out what I have to do; then I do the opposite.’ I think I’ve been doing that my whole painting life.”

Her studio lessons are a bit out of the ordinary as well. Tammra acknowledges, “Come by my classes when the garage door is open, six easels are set up, music is blasting, and my model is dancing out in the back driveway!” Now there’s a picture... •

Christine

art & nature

hen a young child shows a strong interest in any of the arts, sports, or anything for that matter, parents have an obligation to nourish that talent and encourage them to pursue it. This is something that watercolor artist, Christine Reichow firmly believes and fortunately, her parents feel the same because she attributes who she is today to the encouragement and experiences she received as a child.

Reichow has been painting for as long as she can remember. “When I was little and asked my mother for something to play with she’d send me outside with art supplies,” she recalls. “I’d paint flowers, trees and anything else I saw. It was my introduction to nature and it didn’t take me long to realize how awesome it was.”

Her mother was an amazing portrait artist. Christine says, “I still cherish an oil she did of me in my prom dress. While I admittedly got the art bug from her, I am much more aggressive. But it was a different time. Painting was something my mother could do without leaving the house and that was important to her. Turning her talent into a business wasn’t a priority, but it happened along the way because she was that good.”

All through school Reichow was considered the class artist. Anytime there was a need for art of any kind, the teachers called upon her. “When I graduated, my plan was to improve my skills in college. However in the 50s many of us chose marriage over higher education. Then I had three children.” She continues, “But I still painted whenever I had a free minute. I believe that practice is as important as a formal education. It’s the first thing I tell serious, young artists; carve out time each day to hone your skills. Also read everything available on the subject and take advantage of the great videos available online.”

In her early 30s she took classes at Michigan State University in interior design, art, and clothing and textiles. “I loved it all but then my mother became ill and I felt my priority was to take care of her so once again I put college on hold,” she explains.

When her mother passed away she utilized everything she had learned through classes and experience and started to create hand-dyed and handwoven clothing using natural textiles. She opened a storefront in her hometown of Howell, Michigan with inventory so creative and original that it was considered wearable art. The business was an instant success and soon

Reichow

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 27 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016

morphed into a women’s contemporary clothing store. In order to keep up with sales she eventually had to add readymade clothing to her shelfs. “Granted, working with textiles is very different from what I do today, but experience is never wasted. I learned artistic methods like color blending and design work. It was another step closer to finding my love of watercolor.”

After ten years she was ready to move on. When her husband Dick took a job in California, the couple moved to St.Helena. Reichow was in her glory when she discovered that all of the art classes at Napa Valley Community College were free. “I took every class offered and studied every medium possible until the day I walked into a watercolor class. It was love at first sight, I had found my calling and didn’t have to look any futher. I found watercolor exquisite and immediately wanted to learn more, she says, adding, “Dick’s sincere praise of my work was all the encouragement I needed to pursue the challenge.”

Watercolor is one of the hardest mediums to perfect. What makes it beautiful is the same thing that makes it difficult; water control and saving space for the whites and light. When working in oils to change a dark color to a light the artist simply paints over it. This is not so with watercolors. There’s a lot of planning involved. But Reichow kept at it and her persistence turned into sales and before long she began participating in art shows. Watercolor has been her medium of choice ever since. That was 1998.

After celebrating the millennium in California, her husband retired. “Dick and I were ready for a change so we packed up and moved to Estero, she says. “Since I already had the equipment to do art shows I got involved in some very nice events. I was a little worried at first because there didn’t seem to be much interest in my work, but then I realized that my paintings were geared more for Western decor than Southern.

Photo jaunts in wooded areas and snapping lots and lots of pictures solved that problem. “I’d gather all the images and use them as a muse to create paintings, she explains. “My art started to sell and it’s business has been strong ever since.”

Along the way she developed a noticeable style. Friends and clients told her they could recognize a Reichow painting from across a room. The give-a-way was the gradient wash of background colors that appear in almost every print. Reichow says, “I perfected gradation because I feel it takes the place of

over-the-top detail, therefore providing an overall peacefulness and serenity to the beholder.”

She has become very active in the art culture in Southwest Florida, currently serving a two year term as president of the Tower Gallery on Sanibel, the oldest art gallery in Lee County. It’s a co-operative of 24 diverse local artists working with oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, ceramic, wood, glass and metal, as well as an eclectic collection of historic black-andwhite photographs.

To participate each artist must agree to pay an annual stipend, plus a commission on sales. The amount of space in the quaint cottage dictates the number of artists that can be accommodated. Before a new artist is added to the roster, one has to resign.

“We are required to volunteer for three working shifts a month, she explains. “I love the ride to Sanibel. Crossing the causeway bridge takes my breath away. The beauty of it all reminds me why I am here in Florida.”

Reichow has come a long way from that little girl painting trees and flowers with her mother’s art supplies. She is a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Florida Watercolor Society, and associate member of Watercolor West, Florida Artist Group and Southern Watercolor Society.

If Reichow had one wish it would be that everyone had a place to go where they could relax and lose themselves. She says, “My place is out in nature, creating. I get extreme pleasure from painting. When I’m working I go into a meditative trance and have a happy feeling. Everyone should have such an outlet; be it reading, sewing, whatever. Just a place to go and veg.”

“I don’t worry about running out of things to paint, she says, “There will always be another bird, another flower.”

Besides Tower Gallery on Sanibel, you can find her work at local art shows as well as galleries on Captiva and Punta Gorda. Reichow will have a booth at Artfest in downtown Fort Myers the first weekend in February. She has a ‘by appointment only’ show room and warehouse in San Carlos Park.

Reichow also works on commissioned pieces. She says, “Client requests vary from painting special items to needing a piece of art to match their decor. I did an entire egret family for a client, that was really neat. Now I’m doing something I’ve never done before – painting of a condo for children to give their parents as a gift. •

om the universally recognizable to the intimate and introspective, the exhibition examines one of the most universal subjects in art, the portrayal of the human figure in more than 100 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by many of the most important artists of the late 19th and 20th centuries, including Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin, and Andy Warhol. These masterworks from the Kasser Mochary Art Foundation juxtapose their diverse approaches to a common subject, revealing radical stylistic differences, as well as a broad spectrum of political, philosophical and aesthetic meanings associated with the human form.

Forever Young: A Retrospective works by Russell Young

THRU MARCH 26

Russell Young's exploration of American counter culture represents a journey that bares witness to both the excess and ambition that has helped shape the 'American dream,' a brooding and sometimes brutal celebration of the characters and events that glamorize and chastise in equal measure. Early in his career, Young shot portraits of Morrissey, Bjork, Springsteen, Dylan, Diana Ross, Paul Newman and other celebrities. He is noted for his use of diamond dust, pressing the crystals into the enamel of the prints. No two diamond dust pieces are exactly alike, as the crystals are applied individually to each work.

Paradise Found: Cuban Allure, American Seduction May 6 – August 21

The exhibition looks at what President William McKinley described as the close 'ties of singular intimacy' that once existed between the United States and Cuba, from the 1898 Spanish-American War through the pre-revolutionary 1950s. Drawing on a newly acquired photographic archive, the exhibition revisits this now-distant relationship that left lasting traces in each country, from baseball and American-made cars to rumba and rum. Glamorous celebrities, the exchange of goods, and thriving tourism generated many of the artifacts, advertisements, media images, music, performances, and films that appear in the exhibition, shaping the way Americans and Cubans imagine one another. Will Barnet: Graphic Retrospective (70 Years)

January 15 – April 3

This exhibition charts the momentous evolution of art from realism to abstraction during one of the most distinguished careers in American art, that of Will Barnet. Barnet was a painter and printmaker, best known for his abstract depictions of women and domestic scenes. His works reflect an emphasis on flat painting surfaces and meditative tones. A figurative artist throughout his career, there was a period in the 1940s when he experimented with using semi-abstract forms to replace realistic space. Museum of Art - Deland 600 N. Asleep at the Wheel continues to keep the traditions of western swing music alive.

Overlooked and Worthwhile

WHILE MOST PEOPLEknow about the top releases of 2015, even if they don’t know the music (everyone is familiar with Adele), there were a good number of outstanding CDs released by newcomers and more established artists that were overlooked, but worth searching for. With artists’ own websites and a slew of music sites as well as YouTube offering free streaming, not to mention iTunes and Amazon, I’d recommend that you tear yourself away from cat videos, Huffington Post and Facebook to listen to these albums. I’ve included my personal Top 10, but could have easily turned you on to twice that many great new CDs.

Asleep at the Wheel

Still the King

Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys

This is the CD Ikeep coming back to the most throughout the year. It could be because it’s just so much damn fun. Swing music is very infectious and no one does it better than Asleep at the Wheel. Ray Benson and the band have been keeping the Western Swing variety popularized by Bob Wills during the 1930s &40s alive and well, if not more fun than ever.

The collection includes classic songs performed by the country music outlaws

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard; Nashville stars

George Strait and Brad Paisley; and Americana icons

Lyle Lovett and Buddy Miller; as well as songs by lesser known younger stars such as Old Crow Medicine Show, Amos Lee, Kat Edmundson, Pokey LaFarge, and the Avett Brothers, among others.

This is ‘feel-good’ music, where the shuffle of rhythm & blues meets the bluegrass jig at the honky tonk. And this album is where nostalgia becomes new again – standards from a bygone era revisited by artists both young and old. No matter your musical preferences, I dare you to listen to this CD and not have a smile on your face and toes tapping.

Nils Lofgren

UK 2015 Face the Music Tour

Before there was a Bruce Springsteen there was a Nils Lofgren. When Miami Steve went on hiatus from the E Street Band, it was Nils that The Boss chose to fill that big void. Springsteen was a fan of his gui-

tar playing in Neil Young’s band (Nils was 19 at the time), the trio Grin, and as a solo artist as well as his exquisite songwriting. Like Springsteen, Nils writes about everyday people and their everyday lives, creating characters navigating between despair and hope through the American landscape.

An excellent live recording, it finds Lofgren performing a careerspanning repertoire – songs from his days with Grin, his early solo career and newer tunes. There is little banter between songs, but just enough to give you a real concert experience. His introduction to his song for Clarence Clemons, ‘Miss You ‘C’’ is very touching. But it is songs with titles like ‘Lost a Number,’ ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk About It.’ ‘The Sun Hasn’t Set,’ and ‘Mud In Your Eye,’ and ‘Like Rain’ will be the tracks that any Springsteen fan – and anyone else, for that matter, will be impressed with.

Melody Gardot Currency of Man

Melody Gardot is as fine a jazz singer as any of her peers. Her backstory is interesting. As a teenager she played piano in Philadelphia bars, but was hit by a car and seriously injured and hospitalized for extended periods. Music was prescribed as therapy for her recovery and while in the hospital she learned how to play guitar and began writing songs, which became her debut release. Four excellent albums followed including this powerful CD.

Sexy, soulfull and smooth, Currency of Man finds Gardot experimenting with new rhythms and instrumentation. Songs like ‘Don’t Talk,’ ‘She Don’t Know, ‘Same to You’ and ‘Preacherman’ showcase her talents at writing and singing seductive and catchy songs. This is bluesy, jazzy, funky cabaret music at its best.

Sam Outlaw Angeleno

The debut album from the southern-Californian singer-songwriter, Angeleno was produced by the legendary Ry Cooder. With a voice reminiscent of a young

Dwight Yoakam, Outlaw explores a similar soundscape, with elements of the 1960s Bakersfield sound (Buck Owen,

Sam Outlaw and Daniel Romano channel the spirits of George Jones and Gram Parsons

arts MUSIC
www.ftmyersmagazine.com 49 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016

Merle Haggard) and 1970s Laurel Canyon (JD Souther, Jackson Browne). It’s country music with a twist of California.

Songs like ‘I’m Not Jealous,’ with lines like I’m not jealous of him, I’m embarrassed for you, and ’Jesus Take the Wheel (and Drive Me to a Bar),’ with lines like, I’m gonna do some drinkin’ / You should probably steer / I’m counting on you Jesus / Take the wheel , and ‘It Might Kill Me,’ with lines like, If it don’t kill me it just makes you better / It might kill me, it might , sound like they can be classic country laments by George Jones or Webb Pierce –or even Gram Parsons.

An impressive debut from a guy with the voice, the songs and the name to be a big country star.

Daniel Romano

If I’ve Only One Time Asking

Another new face on the country scene worth hearing, Romano writes sad country songs and sings them with all his heart. He has the knack for writing songs that sound like they’ve been classic for decades, yet they sound modern. If you’re a fan of George Jones or George Strait, Ray Price or Randy Travis, the Flying Burrito Brothers or the New Riders of the Purple Sage, you will enjoy this album.

The opening track sets the standard with the lines, I get more happiness from a bottle / And more love from a stranger, and the songs that follow do not disappoint. This is rootsy country music, not the CMTkind. Songs like ‘The One That Got Away,’ ‘Learning to Do Without Me’ and ‘If You Go Your Way (I’ll Go Blind)’ are enjoyed best when you’re feeling blue and nursing a beer.

Leon Bridges Coming Home

More than a few bands have been riding the retro train these days with even fewer successful at becoming more than a tribute to their influences. Leon Bridges is not one of those artists. His sound, although obviously owing a lot to Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, sounds as refreshing as the originals. The horn arrangements, backing harmonies and lyrics all sound familiar – like early Motown, Stax and doo wop. When Bridges sings, What can

I do, what can I do / To get back to your heart / Iwould swim the Mississippi River / If you would give me another start, in the ‘Better Man’ it feels like the natural evolution from ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.’

The album delivers on the promise of the single, ten strong songs that vary from finger-poppin’ (‘Better Man’ &‘Twistin’ & Groovin’) to danceable (‘Smooth Sailin’ and ‘Flowers’) to gospel (‘Shine’ and ‘River’).

Pimps of Joytime Jukestone

Paradise

This could be the party album of the year. This is hard funk, down and dirty blues with more than a touch of that tasty New Orleans sound. And they are not afraid to rock out. Howling horns and wailing guitars mix with soulful harmonies and frenetic rhythm for a psychedelic gumbo that;s impossible to resist. Imagine Parliament Funkadelic with Tom Morello at the Mardi Gras. A relentless collection of sweaty and sweet dance music made just for the fun of it.

From what I hear, the CD, as good as it is, doesn’t come close to how good the band is performing live. Play loud and party!

Rhiannon Giddens Tomorrow Is My Turn

The solo album by founder of the Grammy winning Carolina Chocolate Drops is an eye opener. As singer, violinist and banjo player for the band, she seems to have only scratched the surface of what her talents can offer. A virtuosic musician, it is her vocals that explode off this CD. Producer T Bone has compiled a collection of songs by some of America’s greatest womenfolk singers. Rhiannon does them proud and can stand with the best of them as an equal.

While songs like ‘Waterboy’ and ‘Round the Mountain’ showcase the extent of her vocal acrobatics, songs like her version of Patsy Cline’s ‘She’s Got You,’ Dolly Parton’s ’Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind’ and the title track highlight the breadth of her emotional artistry.

Caitlin Canty Reckless Skyline

Listening to this album I was reminded of the first times I heard Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, but all the while knowing that this was an impressive new talent very much her own woman. In songs ranging from folk ballads to country blues, Canty displays a gift for intelligent and sensitive songwriting, as well as possessing a lovely, sweet voice. Highlights are ‘Enough About Hard Times,’ ‘My Love For You Will Not Fade,’ and ‘My Baby Don’t Care.’

Only her third album, Reckless Skyline makes it clear that Canty is destined to be one of the leading female voices on the Americana music scene.

Kinky Friedman

The Loneliest Man I Ever Met

It’s pretty amazing that after 40 years, Kinky Friedman, at age 70, would release what could be his best album ever. His voice, despite a life of hard drinking and cigar smoking, this Jewish Cowboy, has never sounded better. And the songs here, from the title track, a song he had written decades ago but never recorded, to covers of songs by Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and Warren Zevon, expose a side heretofore mostly unknown – a Kinky with a melancholy and nostalgic longing for a time passed.

Oh, there’s still that dark humor (‘My Shit’s Fucked Up,’ Waits’ ‘Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis’ and ‘Wild Man from Borneo’), but the opening track, his duet with Willie on Nelson’s ‘Bloody Mary Morning,’ notwithstanding, this is a sweet collection of pretty and pensive songs. Who knew Kinky was such a sweet old man, a real softee with a great big heart.

Unfortunately, there were many more outstanding CDs released in 2015 –Amy Helm’s Didn’t It Rain, Liz Vice’s There’s a Light, Sam Lewis’ Waiting on You, Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin’s Lost Time, The Honeycutters’ Me Oh My, and Son Little’s debut – to name a few. And that doesn’t include all the great jazz CDs of 2015. I will review the best new jazz CDs in the March/April issue. •
