Celebrate the Winter Solstice at The Ringling

The Ringling’s 2013-2014 Art of Our Time season continues with: ‘Finding Our Way in the 21st Century,’ is a three-month long, interdisciplinary presentation of exhibitions, performances, related lectures and conversations with artists and curators, and a two-day symposium with national leaders in the field of art and performance.

The next NowHere event is the Greet the Light Winter Solstice Celebration. On December 21, in honor of the second anniversary of the opening of James Tu rrell’s‘Skyspace, Joseph Coat,’ guests mark the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, and herald the return of the sun, a fitting tribute to Turrell and his works with light and space. The gathering in the Museum of Art Courtyard begins at 7pm, with live music, food and drinks until 11pm.

The Ringling’s ‘NowHere’ events continue with the opening of ‘R. Luke DuBois –Now,’ an exhibition that continues at the Searing Wing of the Museum of Art through May 4. DuBois, a ‘new media’ artist –composer, computer programmer, filmmaker, installation artist – combines visual and performance art is concerned with the mining and metamorphosing of data into art and investigations of temporality. NowHere’ events also feature performances in The Ringling’s historic Asolo Theater. Cabaret artist Meklit Hadero performs ‘Places in the Sky,’ January 2325, followed by Lostwax

Multimedia Dance Theatre’s ‘Particular,’ February 6-8 and Ethel & Robert Mirabal’s ‘Music of the Sun’ with choral ensemble, March 6-8.

There will also be ‘Conversations on Process’ with Curators Matthew McLendon & Dwight Currie on January 16, Hermitage Retreat artist Bill Morrison on February 13 and Hermitage Retreat artists Fay Ku on March 13. ‘Collecting Recollections of Sarasota on the Edge’ will be discussed February 11 & 15 and March 15.

‘Genre Creates Ghetto: Explorations of the Contemporary,’ two additional days of conversations with artists and curators are scheduled for March 21 & 22.

In addition, ‘NowHere’ will feature three evening performances in the galleries. Vocalist and sculptor, Lesley Flanigan & R. Luke DuBois perform ‘Bioluminescence,’ an improvisation in which Flanigan’s voice is processed and remixed by DuBois as audio and visuals, on February 27.

Composer and multiinstrumentalist, Bora Yoon joins Dubois on March 20 to perform ‘Phonation,’ combining Yoon’s sound-making devices with simultaneous camera-based projections by DuBois.

Violinist Todd Reynolds performs ‘Moments of Inertia,’ R. Luke DuBois’ composition for amplified violin and video, as well as other works from Reynolds and Dubois’ more than decade of collaborating.

Black Maria Film Festival Feature’s Edison’s ‘Frankenstein’

The Black Maria Film Festival returns for a seventh season at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, November 1 and November 2 at Edison State College. The Film Festival, named after the world’s first

motion picture studio built by Thomas Edison, where he made his own short experimental film, is an international, awardwinning festival that has toured the nation for 32 years showcasing a variety of awardwinning independent and experimental film and video. The Black Maria is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as an Academy Awards qualifying festival for short films.

“Many people are unaware of Thomas Edison’s and Henry Ford’s contributions to the motion picture industry,” says Chris Pendleton, President & CEO at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. Initially inspired by devices like the zoopraxiscope, designed by Eadweard Muybridge in 1879, Edison set out to create a device which would do “for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear.” Edison began working on what he called the Kinetoscope in 1888, and public demonstrations soon followed. In 1893, Edison opened the Black Maria, the world’s first motion picture studio, where he created

ArtCalusa Showcases Work of Historical Artists

Lee Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the City of Fort Myers and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, present ‘ArtCalusa: Reflections on Representation,’ a group exhibition featuring nine of Florida’s leading historical artists working today, each of whom produces works based on scholarly research and experimental approaches in archaeology and history. ArtCalusa interprets the life and experiences of Florida’s indigenous peoples, particularly the Calusa Indians, through their contact with early European explorers. The

exhibition also details through artwork and text the dramatic changes in Florida’s environment since people first moved to Florida over 12,000 years ago.

The exhibit is in the City Pier Building in downtown Fort Myers’ historic River District weekdays, November 4 –December 11. Exhibiting artists include Lucas Century, Merald Clark, Charles Dauray, Christopher Kreider, David Meo, Theodore Morris, Dean Quigley, Hermann Trappman, and Jackson Walker. The exhibition is cocurated by Theresa Schober and Barbara Hill.

In addition to original artwork from private collections and the artists studios, Florida House on Capitol Hill in Washington has loaned the painting, ‘They Called it La Florida’ by Jackson Walker to the ArtCalusa exhibition. The painting and accompanying interactive program shares the compelling story of the landing of Juan Ponce de Leon on the shores of ‘La Florida.’ Useppa Island Historical Society has also loaned three original paintings from its permanent collections by Merald Clark.

at the City Pier Building, where guests can meet the artists and view the ArtCalusa exhibition before it opens to the public.

Grammy nominated Edward R. Murrow and Peabody Awardwinning recording artist and composer Kat Epple will perform live music at the reception.

In addition, scholar and American Academy of Arts & Sciences inductee Dr. Jerald Milanich will explore the 420-year old mystery of Theodore de Bry’s engravings in a special presentation, ‘Tattooed Ladies: Do Theodore de Bry’s Iconic 1591 Engravings of Florida Indians Reflect Reality or Something Else?’

The engravings have long thought to have been based on paintings done by Jacques le Moyne, a French colonist who lived near Jacksonville in 15641565. But are they? Or did de Bry, whose book company published 27 illustrated volumes on the Americas as well as Africa

and Asia, simply make up the engravings, basing them on his imagination, written accounts and borrowings from previously published images? It is a 420-year old mystery, one involving Sir Walter Raleigh, English investors, a dead French artist, a live English artist, a prolific British promoter, the lost Roanoke colony, two French noblemen, and ancient Picts from the British Isles. Reservations are required for the VIP reception.

On November 2, during the opening weekend of ArtCalusa, a panel discussion will focus on visual arts, archaeology and history and will engage the audience in exploring how representations of science and art coincide and conflict in our our appreciation of Florida history. The panel, ‘Art Meets Archaeology,’ consists of State Archaeologist Ryan Wheeler, University of Florida Professor Emeritus Jerald Milanich, local archaeologists Theresa Schober and Steven Koski, and American Indian literature scholar Gretchen Bataille as well as ArtCalusa artists Hermann Trappman, David Meo, Dean Quigley, and Ted Morris for a

discussion. The panel discussion, 1:30-4:30pm in the City Pier Building, is free. Space is limited and reservations will be required.

“This glimpse of the Kotler Glass Collection provides the opportunity to witness an art form never displayed before at The Ringling,” Steven High, executive director at The Ringling says.

Studio glass is a modern technique of an individual or a small team producing handmade glass artworks. The modern American studio glass movement traces its origin to two workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1962, where small and inexpensive glass furnaces were demonstrated. The workshops spawned the development of independent glassblowing studios across the United States, which encouraged artists to experiment with glass. The Kotlers donated their collection of studio glass to The Ringling in 2012, which marked the 50th anniversary of the studio glass movement in the United States. The Ringling Museum of Art, open daily 10am-5pm, is located at 5401 Bay Shore Rd. in Sarasota. For information, call 941-359-5700.

Bert’s, located on the ‘downtown’ Matlacha, along Pine Island Rd. near the Matlacha bridge, is a pub and grill welcoming visitors from around the country to savor a bit of ‘island time.’ As I lounge in the main dining hall, a small painted blue Florida room, I can feel the wood floor moving underneath the table where I sit. Before me people of varied backgrounds and ages dance and sing along to the well played sweet jams of one the area’s favorite bands, Deb and The Dynamics. With six players – Michael Baer (keyboard), Don Hulgas (tenor and baritone sax), Newt Cole (tenor, alto and baritone sax), Cory McClure (drums), Dan Kadey (guitar) – and Deb Salyer, playing a bass guitar almost too big for such a small woman to hold onto, the band brings the house down.

The story here isn’t just about a band or a restaurant; it’s about kismet, if you will. Bert’s Bar & Grill was once, as legend has it, a brothel, where I’m sure a good time was had by all. It still is such a place. It feels like it would almost be impossible for you to enter Bert’s and not walk out feeling like you got your money’s worth. The people who come here seem to know what to expect. The atmosphere pulls you in and in no time at all Deb and The

you just might drop. The energy is contagious. The venue lends itself well to the music and the music lends itself well to the venue. Together they make for the complete rock &roll experience.

The Dynamics are all true professionals with a long history of performing live. Music enthusiasts may remember Newt Cole from the Average White Band or The Jellyroll Blues Band. Don Hulgas comes from a long line of horn players. Both his grandfathers and father played sax. It runs through his blood. The drummer, Cory, is the newest addition to the group. Deb tells me that for a long time she kept blowing him off when he had expressed interest in joining the group. She though that he would be too young, but Cory insisted and persisted. She says that when they finally heard him play, not only were they interested, but they immediately hired him.

Deb has played and starred in groups such as Moxxie, Mis’ Behaven and The R&B All-stars, opening for acts like Emerson Lake and Palmer, Delbert McClinton, Koko Taylor, and Huey Lewis and the News, to name a few. She is an amazing performer.

I asked the group what continues to make them pursue music together. “Chemistry,’ answers Deb. But Michael Bear, laughing, explained how they went out on the road, had to live together and found they didn’t want to kill each other. They continue to appreciate each

and the time and effort that goes into each performance.

When describing the music they typically perform, everyone agreed they are a blues band through and through, with a focus on rhythm &blues, 60’s soul and doo wop. The set seems to work well with the crowd at Bert’s. I have seen Deb and The Dynamics play several times at Bert’s and can confirm that over half the room at any given time is up and shaking what they’ve got.

Although playing their regular gigs keeps the band busy (Thursday nights at Bert’s Bar & Grill in Matlacha, Friday nights at Pincher’s Holiday Inn in South Fort Myers and Sunday afternoon at Doc Fords in Fort Myers Beach), they have somehow found the time to record an all original album working with Sonic Studios in Andalusia, Florida. The exact release date is still up in the air, but they are hoping for sometime before spring.

Deb and The Dynamics have been playing at Bert’s for more than 10 years, keeping it fresh by changing up the set lists and musicians. Bert’s manager, Bernard Johnson, has seen Deb and The Dynamics grow and change over the years, insisting they are consistent entertainers above all. “Whether it is the voice, the horn section, the keyboard or the guitars, there’s a twist every time. They work hard at their trade,’ he says, adding, “Deb will shock you with her range. The band

knows when to kick it up a bit and when to slow it down. They read the crowd. Deb knows what she is doing. She constantly rehearses the band and works them hard. She is always taking it up a notch.”

The Deb and the band have an intimate relationship with Bert’s. The band actually got their start at the bar. Bernard explains, “Years ago we had a duo called the Palm Tones. They played Thursday nights – two guys from Michigan. Deb walked in one night and asked if she could sit in and they let her. The energy started and continued. Over time it became Deb and The Dynamics.” He adds, “Originally, they played in the front bar, but Deb started bringing in more and more sound equipment and we were busy. It was a big decision for us, but we eventually had to move them to the back room due to the number of customers coming in.” I guess, as they say, the rest is history.

You can catch Deb and The Dynamics to this day still working their Thursday night gig at Bert’s. Bert’s also features live music throughout the week. “We mix it up and have a lot of different genres from blues to old time rock to songs from the 40s & 50s,’ he says, adding “You can have a really tough day and a hard week, but come in, have a cold beer, look at the water and the moon, listen to the music… It is great for your Soul.” •

H A R R Y H O L I D A Y S

Harry Connick Jr. – one of the more prolific musicians in the last 25 years – seems like one of those talents who rarely makes a misstep. From his noted charity work in helping New Orleans get back on its feet post-Katrina to never seeming to be over his head on the small or big screen, Connick can pretty much do it all.

What the singer didn’t truly do until 2013 was create an album as stylistically diverse as his latest Every Man Should Know. It’s something Connick says was in keeping with his motto of “no rules, no limits.”

“This one was all over the place,” the singer says during a phone interview. “I don’t think I have many rules but there usually are some guidelines and I usually try to work within the particular framework. But this one I didn’t at all. It really kind of started with the songwriting and then everything followed after that.”

In fact, Connick did a lot of songwriting, so much so he had enough songs for a possible two-disc effort. His label however thought best

to release two different albums, hence Smokey Mary was released a few months before Every Man Should Know

“They’re totally different, Smokey Mary was much more groove based, Every Man Should Know is much more lyrics and melody based,” he says. “You know there are grooves on it, but this album is more about the lyrics I think than the other one is. Although I’m proud of those lyrics, a lot of them are a little bit sillier and just more accommodating to the type of music underneath it.”

Connick says the title track of his new CD was inspired by working with a carpenter friend and watching him create a work bench from scratch.

“He was a pro and I didn’t know anything about it,” he says. “I kept thinking about how fortunate we all are to have people like that. To have people do what they do, to have experts in any field really. Although I don’t know how to do those things he may not know how to do what I do.”

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 20 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2013

One song garnering attention is the country-leaning ‘Greatest Love Story,’ a tune Connick says was inspired by his wife Jill Goodacre.

“I just sit down and start writing tunes and then the groove comes second,” he says of the song. “The country flavor to it, it just seemed that would be the style most suited to the lyrics and the melody. I was just thinking about my wife and how lucky I am to have her.”

One thing Connick hasn’t had a problem with is knowing when a song is finished and not trying to over-think things.

“I’m pretty good about that,” he says. “A lot of the stuff that I do – a lot of the work comes before the performing. The arranging and the orchestrating are pretty finite parts of the process. So when I go in and perform it a lot of the music has been pretty much thought out. Not the solos and not the way I sing it, but the song itself. Especially on these more produced numbers, I have a pretty good idea of what I want it to sound like.”

The singer made bigger headlines earlier this year while being a mentor on ‘American Idol.’ Clearly perplexed at the contestants and their lack of knowledge regarding the songs, Connick took judge Randy Jackson to task over the contestants’

interpretations. He says he hasn’t been asked to be a judge but enjoyed the mentoring aspect.

“I had a good time mentoring, I never really judged on the show and I think they really are two different things,” he says. “My job when they asked me to be on the show was to just help out and lend some opinions as opposed to the judging which is, you know, far from from being supportive and nurturing.”

He also feels if he began his career today as a young talent he might not be as successful but would still have a career.

“It’s really hard to say,” Connick says. “I

think it still goes down to luck and how prepared you are. I would think so only because I mean the way I started selling records it would be different than the way they’re selling them now. But I think if you persevere and you’re prepared, especially when you play the kind of stuff that I play, I think I would do okay.”

Perhaps Connick’s biggest charitable work recently – aside from his continuing effort with New Orleans which he says “is fully up and running and it’s been for many years now” — was ‘Love Wins,’ a beautiful but terribly bittersweet song inspired by the death of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, one of the victims in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting last December. The girl, just six years old, was the daughter of Jimmy Greene, a longtime member of Connick’s touring group.

“I wanted to do something for him and his family so I wrote the tune and all the money is going to his daughter’s foundation,” he says. “I don’t know if any song really writes itself but the idea was certainly there and it was written very quickly because I wanted to get it out there as soon as possible.”

Connick’s ‘Love Wins,’ is a beautiful but bittersweet song inspired by the death of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, one of the victims in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting last December. Just six years old, she was the daughter of Jimmy Greene, a longtime member of Connick’s touring group.

BITO’ BERN

a few questions for singer/songwriter

Dan Bern

He is an acclaimed songwriter, a singer, a novelist, a children’s book author, a storyteller, a painter. Dan Bern is one creative guy, with a lot to say. He’s released more than 20 albums; contributed songs for several films, including Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Get Him to the Greek; written a few books; and tours relentlessly, both solo and with a band.

Dan will be participating in the songwriting panel, with Craig Finn and Johnny Temple, at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Sanibel Island Writers Conference, November 8. Bern will perform that evening.

I asked Dan a few questions about his work.

How did you get involved with Florida Gulf Coast University’s Sanibel Island Writers Conference?

Dan :This will be my fourth time there. I’ll be leading songwriting workshops, doing a reading from a new book, and playing a set of music on the Friday. I’ve done songwriting workshops now in many different locales. Canada, Alaska, New York, Calif, Iowa, Ohio. I really enjoy it. Kind of a way of giving back.

Your songs are successful because there’s a nice balance between a reverence for your influences (most notably Bob Dylan) and a satirical take of their mythical sound, between serious subjects and humorous attitudes towards them, between being a teacher of sorts and a wise-guy, and between being an artist and an entertainer. Do you see yourself more as an artist or as an entertainer?

There is no distinction, no dividing line. The artist entertains. The entertainer must have something to say.

Many of your songs are topical, even overtly political, which can sometimes be a problem. Have you ever received any blowback from fans or audiences about your political views?

Part of the job. I’m not here simply to soothe. Once you sing it, or write it, it’s out of your hands.

Some writers approach the craft systematically, writing regularly or having a certain routine, while others, such as

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 24 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2013

Keith Richards, talk about being lucky to be in the room when the song ‘arrives.’ What is your creative process when songwriting or writing prose?

Songs can come anytime, anywhere. They kind of float in the air and you gotta catch ‘em. Other kinds of writing you need to sit down and pound it out.

One of your most popular songs is ‘Estelle.’ Can you tell me about writing that song?

I was making my first record. It just poured out. The recorded version is the first time I ever played it.

You wrote some of the songs John C. Reilly sings in the hilarious film, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. You’ve also written songs for other films, including Get Him to the Greek. How is writing for films different than writing for your own albums?

It’s very refreshing and freeing to do that. Like getting to be 16 again and writing songs from the beginning. You use yourself, but you also have to get out of the way.

Your recent album, Doubleheader is a compilation of songs about baseball. How did that album come about?

I’ve written baseball songs for a long time, since I lived in Chicago and went to Wrigley Field. It just sort of happened. I got a good bunch of guys together and we made the record. We played the whole set of songs last summer at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

On another recent album, Drifter, you sing ‘Swing Set,’ a duet with the legendary Emmylou Harris. How did that come about and what was that experience like?

She’s obviously an icon and a fantastic singer. I wrote the song for Jonathan Demme. He was directing a play in New York City a couple years ago. He was the one who thought of Emmylou for the female part.

[Bern wrote the title song for Demme’s documentary film, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains, and is working with Demme on a documentary based on the writings of Everett Ruess.]

In addition to songwriting and performing you have also written two books – Quitting Science, under the pseudonym Cunliffe Merriweather, and a children’s book, Cleaver the Gronk under your real name, which you also illustrated. Why did you choose to write ‘Quitting Science’ under apseudonym?

There’s actually been a bunch of books – 7 or 8 now. Quitting Science was about a scientist who goes around giving lectures and demonstrations. So it was Cunliffe’s book.

Any advice to writers?

Don’t worry about the business or getting a million hits on YouTube. Don’t worry about formulas and all that. Song is a big playing field. Have fun with it. Find your voice. Sing a lot. Sing what you want to say. •

Theatre on the Edge

IT’S ONE THING to challenge theatergoers with edgier, even occasionally controversial material. It’s another to do it successfully here in quiet Southwest Florida –and for the last two decades! Theatre Conspiracy has been doing just that and their 20th anniversary season looks to be another fine assortment of thought-provoking entertainment, having kicked off with ‘All My Raisins in the Son,’ running through November 2. W ritten by John Twomey, winner of Theatre Conspiracy’s annual New Play contest, ‘All My Raisins in the Son’ deals with the quirky personalities and inner politics of a staff of high school teachers, one of whom is a recent hire, ready to inspire his students. Other productions to look forward to this season include Pulitzer Prize finalist ‘Becky Shaw,’ described by The New York Times as “engrossing as it is ferociously funny like a big box of fireworks fizzing and

crackling” (November 22 - December 15); ‘Relatively Speaking,’ a collection of three one-act comedies by four-time Oscar winner Ethan Coen, two-time Oscar winner Elaine May and four-time Oscar winner Woody Allen (January 3-19); ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane,’ winner of four Tony Awards (February 7-23); and ‘The Whale,’ Obie award winner Samuel Hunter’s story of a 600-pound morbidly obese man, sitting in his apartment, depressed and slowly eating himself to death (March 14-23).

The Theatre Conspiracy story goes back to 1985 when founder Bill Taylor, a Florida native, started the troupe as a response to the lack of challenging theatre available in the area at the time. That production’s success led to another and, eventually, the opening of their first permanent location.

“We were lamenting the fact that there were no

challenging roles or plays for us to do,” Bill relates, “We decided we would pool our resources and put on our own show. In 1988 the Royal Palm Players went out of business and left this little theatre across from the Edison Mall. We made a deal with the landlord to use that space.” After about a year, Bill left town. Returning in 1990, he discovered that his old college professor had started a theatre. Soon after, the Alliance of the Arts building was built and this theatre took up residence for about two years. Bill was then offered the chance to move Theatre Conspiracy into the Alliance’s 137seat Foulds Theatre, and this is where they reside to this day. Bill refers to the Foulds’ scaled-down space as the ‘Three Bears’ theatre, as in “it’s not too big and not too small...’ It’s a nice, intimate theatre space,” he smiles, “It’s just right.”

Although Theatre Conspiracy is branching out into the equity actors’ talent pool for the first time this season, they regularly feature talented local actors including Joann Haley, Christopher Brent, Scott Thompson, Joan Olson, and Karen Goldberg.

“The Alliance knew that I used to produce shows myself and asked me to become the new resident theatre company. We used to be called Avalanche Productions, then changed to Southwest Theatre Conspiracy, then finally settled on just Theatre Conspiracy,” Bill shares.

From the beginning, it was clear Theatre Conspiracy was determined to stand out. Bill asserts, “When we first started we were the only ones challenging the public. We wanted to do stuff that was more meaty, with a little more controversial subject matter. Our moniker in the beginning was ‘The Classics to the Cutting Edge’. We’ve evolved over time

and our emphasis now is supporting new work and up-and-coming playwrights. We do that through our annual New Play contest, now in its 15th year. The winner of New Playwright, John Twomey, also won the

ally recognized entity, this local group, called Playwright Conspiracy, is where Theatre Conspiracy reaches out to help local playwrights develop their work. We’re talking to Edison State College about a joint production.”

Reflecting upon 20 years’ worth of productions, Bill recalls some of his favorites out of nearly 120 shows, ‘Parallel Lives: The Kathy and Moe show,’ ‘Greater Tuna,’ ‘Lonely Planet,’ and ‘Becoming Eleanor’ (about Eleanor of Aquitane) come to mind. Taylor explains, “Word of mouth took over on that one. I was amazed at the reaction I got on that show. We did a show in the art gallery with an exhibition of art by the mentally ill, called ‘Marat Sadd’.”

Not only is Year 20 looking to be another engaging season, but donors and fans will be ableto enjoy a special anniversary reception in early December. “We’ll decorate the lobby with old pictures, list all the shows and try to track down some older actors,” Bill shares. They are also planning to celebrate the holidays with a free children’s performance of ‘The Night Before Christmas,’ Theatre Conspiracy has written a complete script for this production.

It’s a symbiotic relationship between Theatre Conspiracy and Lee County Alliance for the Arts. Bill says, “We support the Alliance and they help us, too. It’s a very good working relationship.”
