The next time you are sick, your care may include the technology that people use to navigate road trips or choose the right vacuum cleaner online. Artificial intelligence is spreading in health care, and often a software or computer program can learn from large amounts of data and make predictions to guide or assist patients. It has already been diagnosed with eye disease associated with diabetes and works backstage to help doctors understand MRI scans and other imaging tests for certain types of cancer. https://medium.com/@usm36/artificial-intelligence-moves-into-a-care-10cc7c5f2e9f

Now, parts of the health system are beginning to be used directly with patients. During some clinic and telemedicine appointments, AI-powered software asks patients the initial questions about their symptoms that doctors or nurses usually ask. The AI program, which has the spoken image of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, can help the University of Southern California students cope with stress. Researchers say the breakthrough in medicine is at an early stage, but they hope that technology will grow by helping people stay healthy, help doctors do things and work more behind the scenes. They also feel that patients are becoming more and more accustomed to AI in their care just as they are accustomed to using technology while traveling or shopping. But they say there are limits. Even the most sophisticated software has not yet learned the important parts of care, such as the ability to feel compassion or the ability to use common sense. “Our goal is not to replace humans with only humans,” said Albert Rizzo, a research professor at the University of Southern California. Rizzo and his team are working on a program using AI and a virtual reality character called “Ellie”, which is designed to help veterans who return from deployment first need treatment. Ellie appears on computer monitors and leads a person through initial questions. Ellie makes eye contact and uses hand gestures as a human therapist. If the person gives a short answer, it also pauses to push them to say more. “After the first or second question, you forget it’s a robot,” said West Point cadet Cheyenne Quilter. Ellie does not diagnose or treat. Instead, human therapists used recordings of their sessions to help identify what the patient needed. “It’s not that AI is trying to be your therapist,” said Gale Lucas, another researcher. “It is trying to address who is most vulnerable to AI.”

The team that developed Ellie has developed a new AI-based program to help students manage stress and stay healthy. Come to USC this semester to give students easy advice on how to deal with loneliness, get a good night’s sleep, or deal with other problems in college. Ari does not replace a therapist but says its designers connect students with their phones or laptops for trusted help when needed USC senior Jason Lewis didn’t think there would be much to do when he was asked to help with the test because he didn’t seek counseling. He found that Ari covered a number of things he was involved in, including information on how social media was affecting people. “Everyone thinks they are alone in their thoughts and problems,” he said. “Ari certainly does counter that alone.” Aside from addressing mental health needs, artificial intelligence also works in the most common form of medicine. Tech company Advino Medical and 98 Point 6 provide treatment through secure text messaging, both of which use artificial intelligence to interrogate patients at the beginning of an appointment. Advino CEO James Bates said their AI program will determine what questions to ask and what information is needed. It remotely treats the patient with telemedicine, using that information and the doctor’s prescribed diagnosis. The company currently uses technology at some Safeway and Albertsons grocery stores in Arizona and Idaho. But it hopes to expand to about 1,000 clinics by the end of next year. In the end, AI wants to detect and treat some minor illnesses, Bates said Examining large amounts of data or images to determine if the probability of AI for the A’s is so great, or how to diagnose a disease, is sometimes faster than a doctor’s.

Hospitals may have programs currently in place to tell physicians that patients are likely to have sepsis in future uses, said Darren Dworkin, chief information officer at CedarsSinai Medical Center in California. Those warnings can help doctors to prevent or treat life-threatening illnesses quickly. “It’s basically a small tap on the shoulder, we all want to get,

Hey, maybe you should

see it here,” said Dworkin. Dr. Eric Topol, in his book “Deep Medicine,” argues that artificial intelligence is transforming medicine, by freeing up doctors to spend more time with patients. But he notes that technology does not take care. Even the most advanced program does not reflect empathy, Topol said. Patients stick to their treatment and prescriptions more and if they know their doctor is pulling for them. Dr. Isaac Cohane of Harvard Medical School notes that artificial intelligence does not process everything the doctor thinks about when deciding on treatment. This may include waiting for a few more months for the patient to cope with the pain or attending a child’s marriage or graduation.
