Among other things, it helps children establish the order of their language, such as where things and verbs fall in a sentence. In computing, language learning is the work of syntactic and semantic parsers. Parsers are very important for web searches, natural-language database querying, and voice-recognition systems such as Alexa and Siri. Soon, they could even be used for home robotics. But collecting annotation data is time-consuming and difficult for less common languages. In addition, humans do not always accept quotations, and quotations may not accurately reflect how people speak naturally. MIT researchers describe an observational learning parser to more closely mimic the child’s language-acquisition process, which can greatly expand the parser’s capabilities. In the future, the parser will serve to enhance the natural interaction between humans and individual robots.

Machine learning — a kind of AI that is responsible for those successes and failures. Broadly, AI has shifted from software that relies on highly programmed rules to trial-and-error learning systems. Machine learning has gained momentum thanks to advances in powerful computers, big data and algorithms called neural networks. Those networks are collections of simple computing elements that are loose on the neurons in the brain, creating strong or weak links when it comes to training data.
