Architecture in its simplest form is the practice of designing and constructing a building, yet its purpose is given a deeper meaning through cultural and the surrounding contextual aspects that create a narrative. In this project, I have designed a theatre and cinema in the famously historical area of Old City in Philadelphia, PA. The site is situated on the intersection of Chestnut street and Front Street, surrounded by historical museums and buildings. My design incorporates the use of multiple historical languages, relative from the choice of materials to the design, creating a narrative not only through these choices, but is a visible flow throughout each floor of the building. The first floor is covered with a terra-cotta facade which represents the preexisting typical materiality of historic Philadelphia buildings, The second floor is skinned with a metal panel creating an illusion montage of illustrations from classical American Art depicting George Washington in the American Revolutionary War, representing the industrial revolution and changing of the times. The third floor is covered with glass boxes, designed to simulate a gem, which is representative of the strong and powerful country that America is today.
