Daughtry Returns With New Song “Backbone” GRAMMY-nominated rock band Daughtry unveil a brand new song entitled “Backbone.” Notably, the track marks the group’s first new original music since the release of the 2016 greatest hits collection, It’s Not Over… The Hits So Far. With its swaggering riff and soulful chant— “Ya gotta show a little backbone”—this anthem heralds the arrival of the band’s anxiously awaited fifth full-length album due out later this year. Additionally, it paves the way for the first official single coming very soon. About “Backbone,” frontman Chris Daughtry commented, “This is just a little something to get everyone ready for the record. It’s been so long since we gave you new music that it only felt right to drop something fresh. We’ve put a lot into this music, and we can’t wait to share what’s to come.” Right now, the boys have been playing the track on their headlining North American tour joined by Sinclair as support. Jonathan Davis Releases New Single "Everyone" Jonathan Davis has released the video for "Everyone," the second single from his highly anticipated debut solo album Black Labyrinth, set for release on May 25th via Sumerian Records. With the release of "Everyone," digital pre-orders for Black Labyrinth have launched on iTunes, GooglePlay and Amazon. Fans who pre-order the album will receive instant-downloads of "Everyone" and the previously released first single, "What It Is," which debuted as the #1 most added single on Rock radio. Pre-orders for the physical album are also available now, at jonathandavis.com or sumerianmerch.com. Diverse and progressive, Black Labyrinth represents a natural evolution for the storied frontman of critically lauded rock band Korn, whose previous musical contributions have 3

yielded two GRAMMY® Award wins, eight GRAMMY® Award nominations, worldwide sales of 40 million-plus, and countless sold out shows in nearly every corner of the globe. Inspired in part by the Ganzfeld Experiment, and the out of body experiences and hallucinations that often accompany it, Davis focused on religion, consumerism and apathy throughout the album.

Kix Brooks Debuting Never-Before-Heard Song in New Hallmark Movie Kix Brooks is a busy man, but not too busy. The musician and actor is bringing both of those worlds together in a new movie for the Hallmark Channel, Home by Spring. Brooks plays the character of Arthur, a billionaire who is not sure he approves of the man who wants to marry his daughter. That helped him get a handle on the character. "I'm a dad, and I only want what's best for my kids," Brooks tells Taste of Country. "I'm certainly gonna raise an eyebrow, probably, at who they want to spend the rest of their lives with, like I think most dads do." Brooks drew on his observations of some of the wealthier people he's had occasion to be around to flesh out the character. "This character is always leaning forward," he observes. "He's not really on his heels a lot. He doesn't get caught off guard a lot. He likes to be in control, likes to be confident about the situation — until he finds out that maybe he's not right!" he adds with a laugh. He admits he had to re-think aspects of the role when producers asked him if he wanted to contribute a song. "I had no intentions of singing. I didn't see this character as being a musician or anything like that. Hallmark said, 'It seems like kind of a shame to have you in this movie and not performing, is there any way that could be worked in?' So then you start re-building a backstory on your character, and I was thinking, 'Well, this guy could have had a

band in college,' like a lot of people I run into. Accountants, dentists and everything else that used to play music, and lots of them are good pickers who just gave it up to get a real job, so to speak." "It's actually a very old song," he shares, revealing that it was his wife, Barbara, who reminded him about a song he wrote around 1983 called "Barefoot Days" that would work well for the film. Home by Spring premieres on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday (March 31).

Bruce Springsteen Plots New Box Set With 'Tunnel of Love,' 'Human Touch' Bruce Springsteen will reissue remastered versions of five albums as a new box set, The Album Collection, Vol. 2, 1987 - 1996, out May 18th via Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings. The collection includes four studio albums – Tunnel of Love, Human Touch, Lucky Town and The Ghost of Tom Joad – plus Springsteen's 1993 MTV Plugged concert special. It also boasts a special 12-inch of Springsteen's 1988 live EP, Chimes of Freedom, and the first-ever vinyl release of his 1996 EP, Blood Brothers. Springsteen's longtime engineer Bob Ludwig helmed the remastering, transferring the audio from the original analogue master tapes. Both Tunnel of Love and Human Touch have been turned into double-LPs to further maximize audio quality. The records in the The Album Collection, Vol. 2 will arrive in recreations of their original packaging. The set will also come with a 60-page book packed with rare photos, memorabilia and press clippings from the era. The Album Collection, Vol. 2 will be available to pre-order starting March 30th. In 2014, Springsteen released the first volume of The Album Collection, which featured remastered versions of his first seven studio albums.

Ronnie Wood 'All Clear' After Lung Cancer Scare Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood revealed in a new interview that he is now cancer-free after being diagnosed with "a touch of lung cancer" in 2017. We've covered the Rolling Stones like no other band; they've given us their greatest interviews, even communicated with one another in our pages "I had three months of check-ups and it was all clear and they said go and enjoy life," Wood told Metro. Wood had a part of his lung removed after doctors found "this supernova burning away on my left lung," he said last August. Fortunately, the cancer didn't spread to other parts of the body – "If that had happened it would have been all over for me" – and the guitarist didn't require chemotherapy, which was good news as Wood didn't "want to lose my hair," he told Metro. "If your body is riddled with cancer, it’s a losing cause. Luckily, all mine was contained within the left lung and I was fortunate enough to get shot of it, bang. There was none in the rest of my body so I didn’t require chemo," Wood added, marveling that his lungs didn't "explode" after smoking cigarettes for over 50 years. Wood has since quit his nicotine habit. Wood also doled out some advice for those dealing with cancer. "Just be strong and remain positive," he said. "I was prepared to remain positive to my dying breath. I’ve had a great life and I was all ready to go. Wow! I didn’t know I was going to be given the ticket to last this long. What a reprieve." With a clean bill of health, Wood will join the Rolling Stones on their upcoming European tour.

Country music duo, brothers John and TJ Osborne have been busy the last few years and their hard work has finally paid off. I got to talk with John of Brothers Osborne to discuss their upcoming new album "Port Saint Joe" and what's next for these talented brothers. John said growing up he listened to a lot of classic rock and that two of his biggest musical influences growing up were The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He said, "I learned their music at a very young age and I was obsessed with those bands. Then I got into Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, all the big guitar players and blues players. That's where it started for me. I was obsessed with the guitar at a very early age, that was the catalyst for what I do now." Their single, "It Ain't My Fault" has been a huge success for the brothers. I asked John if he thought that single would do that well. He responded, "You never know whether songs are going to be big or not. I mean, the truth of the matter, no one really admits this but as songwriters, especially in Nashville, we write every day, sometimes multiple times a day. So even the biggest songwriter, the majority of your songs are not successful. It's just kinda the law of averages. It works out that way. So you don't really know, early on and say, 'Wow, I really wrote a great song' or 'This is gonna

5

be a huge song.' But when we wrote that song, we knew we loved it, we knew it was fun and we knew it was different. It sounded very unique, it sounded like us and when we recorded it in the studio the first time, when the engineer mixed it, and we played it back we thought to ourselves, 'Wow, we have something really special!' Now did we know it would be a big song or if people will like it? It's hard to tell until you put it out there, but we knew that we had something that we were really, really proud of and that stood out. And fortunately it's a song that's really helped kinda push us over the edge." The process for the brothers to write songs is a little different when they are writing for themselves. John say's, "When we write for Brothers Osborne, it's easier if we're both in there because the sound is the two of us, so it's both of our inputs, coming together to make one sound. But there is one song, 'Pawn Shop' that TJ wrote outside the band, but every other song we wrote together and every song on 'Port Saint Joe' we have written together. We try to stay focused and just write as many songs together as possible and just create music that's inherently us." "Port Saint Joe," which is their new album, will be released April 20th. This album has Florida ties since the brother's recorded in Florida at Jay Joyce's beach house. John said, "It was a lot more

work just because they recorded in a house that was not made for the production of an album. But in a way, it made it a lot less pressure because it never felt like we were in a studio. It just felt like we were hanging out at a beach house, drinking beers and playing songs. Just like what we did growing up, so it certainly took a lot of pressure off. There were less distractions because when you're back in Nashville, it's easy to leave the studio and go right back to your routine and take care of life stuff. It kinda takes you out of the moment, but the fact that we were down there and just stayed there and didn't go anywhere. We were just able to kinda relax and live in the creative process for a couple weeks." Although they love all their songs, John says, "From a performance standpoint, I love playing 'Shooting Straight,' just because it's a really a fun groove. It's a really fun jam and at the end of the song, there's a really great guitar solo that I get to play. At the end of the day, I'm just a guitar player. But from a songwriter's perspective, the last song on the record is called 'While You Still Can.' It's about loving the people and doing all the things in life that you wanted to do while you still can. And that's the song from a lyrical perspective that I happen to be most proud of." John states, "That if your not a fan of guitar solos, than either don't come to our show or during my guitar solo. Go to the bathroom or go get a beer, because it's gonna take a while!" John also says, "A guitar player wouldn't be any good if he didn't have a good drummer and bass player, and that's the truth. You gotta have the whole band together, because if you just one good person, it's not gonna work. It's gotta run like a well-oiled machine." Now the brothers have recently picked up an ACM Award for Local Duo and Music Video of the year, I asked John how was that experience and he said, "There are not words that even begin to describe that type of feeling. Our first CMA was such a long-shot victory that no one expected us to win. We didn't know anyone had voted for us, and the only thing I can equate that

to is, winning a gold medal in the Olympics, but you were ranked in 20th place. It's just unbelievable and every time we win something, we're so grateful. We've always been the underdogs our whole life and we got into country music about the same time as Florida Georgia Line, and they have been absolutely killing it from day one. They've had such a huge career and are still having huge careers. And for us to be presented with an award like that, we're so grateful because we're still trying to make every day count. There are times where we might not think that we're doing it right and then when we're given and award like that, a recognition like that, it reminds us that we're doing okay. Everyone in that category has done so well, but if we don't, it's okay. There are some great artists in that category that certainly have earned it and deserve it. So for us to win, it's just a feeling of gratitude and emotion, and appreciation that we have so much love and support in our industry." When I asked John what he considers their greatest musical accomplishment to date, he says, "It's really hard to say since 'Stay a Little Longer' and 'Pawn Shop' went gold

6

and we've had multiple Grammy nominations. But I would say the one that sticks out to me is winning our first CMA, because it was so out of the blue and so unexpected. We were at a time in our career where we were just beat up and tired, and not really sure if we were making any progress. Winning that award, it put a huge amount of wind in our sail and allowed us to get to where we are today." John has a message to their fans, he says, "From my brother and I, we appreciate you

all more than you would ever know. Every person that comes to a show, buys a T-shirt, buys our music or requests our music on the radio, they make our dreams come true every day. It doesn't go unnoticed, and we appreciate and love every one of them for the gifts that they continue to give us!" Don't miss Brothers Osborne at the Tortuga Music Festival in Fort Lauderdale on April 8th and follow them on Facebook or Twitter for updates!

Dylan Scott is a Country music artist that has recently had some great success with his first #1 single, "My Girl." I had a chance to talk to him about his plans for 2018 as he and his wife just recently had an addition to their family. He is currently on tour with Justin Moore's HELL ON A HIGHWAY TOUR and doing some of his own headlining shows. With such a busy schedule and a new baby, I asked Dylan how does he manage to fit everything in and he said, "Well, I got a great wife who is great at what she does, but the older he gets, the harder it is leaving the house. He's three months now and his personality has kicked in, which is like, 'Oh, man, this is awesome.' We just look forward to getting down the road and hopefully getting him out here on the road with us more. But being a dad is awesome, it's one of the greatest things to ever happen to me!" Dylan will be performing at the Tortuga Music Festival again and I asked him what he's looking forward to and he responded, "It's such a cool event. I hope it's just a lot of what it was last time, just a lot of people singing the music back to us and having a good time. We have a later playing spot this time, which is really cool. So I'm looking forward to being on the beach, being with people, dancing, smiling, and

9

singing back to us, having a good time. It's just a really cool festival." Dylan tells me some of his musical influences are Keith Whitley, Tim McGraw and George Strait. He says, "I was listening to everything across the spectrum, everything from those guys to Lil Wayne, Maroon 5 and Kings of Leon. I listen to everything, and it kind of inspired my writing and who I am as an artist. Even though I listen to everything, country music was my passion, that's what I wanted to do, so I never looked back." His wife is what influences Dylan to write. He said, "I didn't move to Nashville to become a songwriter, I moved to be a performer, and when I got there, is when I started wanting to write music. So she inspires my writing, I got a lot of love songs about her, but now that I'm a dad, the daddy songs will start coming out, which will be really cool as well." "My Girl" has been a huge hit for Dylan and it's a very personal song for him. He said, "It's about Blair, my wife. We were 19 years old riding down the road and Eminem came on the radio and she started rapping it word for word and dancing. That's what inspired the whole song. I just call it my mushy, gushy love story between my girlfriend and I, who is now my wife. Luckily, people related to it, which is great!" Dylan said, "I was surprised it went to

number one. That's the goal, is to have a number one song. I wanted a number one song, so I got it. It was like a breath of fresh air, but it did surprise me a little bit, because I didn't know if people wanted to hear my love story or not. I soon realized that everybody has a love story and a lot of guys related to it, and a lot of girls related to it. It was cool." Now, Dylan has a new single out, "Hooked," that is climbing the charts. He says, "It's just a feel good up-tempo song about a guy who's good with girls. It was written by Seth Ennis, Morgan Evans and Lindsay Rimes. They emailed it to me, I played it for my wife and she loved it. She was dancing in the car to it, so I had to record it." Right now, Dylan tells me that "My Girl" is his favorite song to play live. He says, "Because everybody knows that song and that's when everybody gets excited. We play it in our set and it's just fun to do, but 'Hooked' is kind of taking off, as well. The further it goes up the charts, the more people realize, 'Okay, this is that song!' It's fun to perform, and it's cool to see people sing it back to you." I asked Dylan what he considers his biggest musical accomplishment to date and he responded, "Having a number one song in country radio. That's by far the biggest. I'm just blessed to get to do it. I get to go out and play music every night for a living. I don't even feel like I'm working either, because it's what I love to do, it's what I always wanted to do. I'm just living my dream, playing music and watching songs of mine go up the charts and people sing it back to me, that what it's all about for me." Dylan's plans for the rest of the year are to finish up the current tour and playing at a lot of fairs and festivals this summer. Hopefully having another hit with "Hooked." He said, "I've got to get some new music out and play shows and build a fan base. Hopefully get my family out here, just have

a good time and have fun, that's what it's all about. We are working on a new album and have about three-quarters of it written, so hopefully we can release it in the fall." There have been many great bands that have been formed in Florida and Shinedown is no exception. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida by singer Brent Smith in 2001, Shinedown has done very well and has had 11 number one singles and is releasing their sixth album, "ATTENTION ATTENTION." I had the pleasure of talking with Brent about their new album, their current tour and what's in store for Shinedown in the future. Their new album "ATTENTION ATTENTION" is going to be released on May 4th and the first single, "DEVIL" was released on March 7th, and it is out globally, worldwide right now. Brent tells me, "We released a video at the same time, and we just had a very, very clear view and focus of what we were gonna do with this album. There's a lot of differences on this one as opposed to the other five. One of those being that Eric Bass, which is our bass player, took the role of sitting in the captain's chair with the production of the album. So, he actually produced the record, and on top of that, he also mixed the album. It was really a family affair. I think, in the modern day with recording, when a band says that they're going to self-produce something, I think a lot of people kind of go, 'Oh boy, what is this gonna sound like?' But the fact of the matter is that we've had some really extraordinary teachers. Over the years, we've worked with a lot of different engineers, male and female, and some just incredible producers. And with that being said, just by keeping our eyes and our ears open, we've learned a lot from them. This record is definitely built around a statement, a lot 11

by Liz Stokes

of different statements. It's also a story album. It's not necessarily a quintessential what you would call concept record. Because when I think of concept record, I think a little bit more literal. Kind of like if you're looking at Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or even Queensryche's, "Operation: Mindcrime." This is more of a broad story, and we want the listener to put themselves inside the album. The whole record takes place inside of a room, and that's a very specific part of the record. But it's really an album about not being afraid to fail. I think that a lot of times, people will put themselves in a corner and they'll paralyze themselves by what they want to achieve or what they wanna go after that's maybe not the norm for them, but they already, kind of, second-guess themselves before they even attempt it. And I don't that think people will necessarily be defined by your failures. I think you'll be defined by the fact that you didn't give up, and that's a lot of what "ATTENTION ATTENTION" is about!" With the band having all the control of the album, it's easy to see that this album will be special to them and to all their fans. Brent says, "The fact that we are in a band together, that was actually a big positive for us because you can't offend us. We can't offend each other and it's because we actually do have egos. I think when I see people talk about how there's not an ego in their band, I'm not talking about necessarily like a solo artist, but if you're in a band and you've got that band thing, 'There's no egos in this band,' you're lying. You're straight up lying because, if you don't have an ego,

then you're not gonna have the same stance on everything. And because each of us have a very strong personality individually, when you put us all four together, it turns into something pretty extraordinary. But you know, with Eric, he's really freaking talented. It wasn't a difficult record to make." I asked Brent how hard was it choosing what songs go on the album and he responded, "This was a very intense and very under a microscope and really focusing on telling the story. So there wasn't as many songs written because we knew what we were doing. As one song was written, we knew what the next one needed to be. But in the same breath of that, they're still laid out very much like individual songs, if that makes sense, from like, a single mentality. Even though everything is tied together, we had a very strong hold into what we needed to do and what we needed to convey. We knew what the story was, so that really was imperative in the songwriting. It's an album that's not like any other Shinedown album, and it's unlike any video that Shinedown has ever done." Brent also tells me that, "DEVIL" is the beginning of the story, so it was very imperative that the video had some very specific things. Because we're putting a lot of information in that video, because the goal of the album "ATTENTION ATTENTION" is to also do a video for every single song, because we're going to tell the story. If you pre-order the record, you can get a great track. We're only gonna give one great track before May 4th, but it's a song called, 'THE HUMAN RADIO.' And the video for that is gonna come out the same day that the song is released. But going back to 'DEVIL,' it's a very visual video. It's a very intense video and what I've seen so far from people is that, it's everything that they wanted us to do. Because we listen to the audience. When we're on the road, we do a lot to be in front of our audience and do a lot of meet and greets, and really meet the fans. To just talk to the public about what Shinedown is and who Shinedown is, and a lot of that is a representative of our fan base that continuously grows. I think what they wanted us to let them know that we had

not lost a step in regards to, we are rock 'n roll. And to be honest with you, we are rock 'n roll to the bone. We don't make the same record twice, we're not gonna phone anything in, and we're also not gonna do something because it might be for whatever reason the new thing is in music at the time. That's not the way we are. We have a pretty good hold on exactly who we are, and how we present ourselves. But we're very eclectic. We've got pretty broad talent. We've been very, very fortunate that our fan base, as it continues to grow, they've given us a platform. And they've always allowed us to be ourselves. With that being said, we're always gonna be truthful to who we are when we're writing an album. I tell people this all the time. When you wake up in the morning, you'll be the first person you'll see every single day. You gotta make that person happy before you'll be able to make somebody else happy. So, that's kind of how we look at it. Shinedown will be performing at 98RockFest at Amalie Arena on April 20th and at WJRR's Earthday Birthday on April 21st. I asked Brent what should fans expect to see on this tour and he responded, "I'm not trying to take anything away from the circus or anything like that, but the circus closed their doors and we are not very appreciative of anyone that beats up animals, so we'll take the slogan from them. Shinedown is the Greatest Show On Earth! It's a very theatrical show and we want people to be transported into a different world for an hour and a half, two hours. And we take that very seriously, the visual side of of what we do, we wanna make it an experience for everybody in the room. I've kind of always told people that I'm forever in the third grade when it comes to production and to music. My inner kid is always there and I just want to bring that out of everybody in the audience. At the end of the day, we all have one boss. It just happens to be everyone in the audience. So, we wanna make them happy!" Don't miss Shinedown at 98RockFest at Amalie Arena in Tampa and at WJRR's Earthday Birthday at the Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando, and definitely don't forget to pre-order their new album, "ATTENTION ATTENTION."

American alternative rock band The Revivalists started their journey in 2007 in New Orleans. The group has surpassed expectations with their raw musical talents, as they include not only great vocals by David Shaw, but also bring depth to their outfit by including a saxophone and trumpet as well. The 7-piece band consists of Ed Williams (pedal steel guitar, guitar), David Shaw (lead vocals), Zack Feinberg (guitar), Rob Ingraham (saxophone), George Gekas (bass guitar), Andrew Campanelli (drums, percussion), and Michael Girardot (keyboards, trumpet). The Revivalists are getting ready to launch their spring tour, “Against All Odds,” at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on April 11th. I had the opportunity to speak with guitarist Zack Feinberg to discuss the band, their music and their upcoming tour. I wanted to know more about how the group met each other. Zack states, “In 2007, most of us were in college at the time, I was a junior in college. And our lead singer, David Shaw, had just moved to New Orleans. And he was sitting on his front porch, playing guitar, and one day I was riding my bike and came upon him. He was singing and playing, and thought he sounded great and I started up a conversation, and we took it from there.” The Revivalists have had a lot of success over the last few years which started with the release of their single, “Wish I Knew You,” 17

by Neal Nachman

which was the second single of their album, “Men Amongst Mountains.” In September 2016, "Wish I Knew You" reached No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart, and in May 2017, the song reached No. 1 on the Alternative Songs chart. Zack told us, “It was the second single off the album, and it just kind of had this incredible build. And eventually all the radio stations started catching on, and it kind of built from there. So it's been really nice.” The Revivalists decided to launch their new Spring tour in the State of Florida starting at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, before heading to House of Blues in Orlando, the Fillmore in Miami Beach, and then performing in Jacksonville at the Florida Theater. I wanted to know what we should expect from their upcoming tour. Zack tells us, “It's gonna be great shows. We're bringing out a relatively new addition to our family. We have Pj Howard as a percussionist and second drummer, and it's been a blast having him out with us. We're gonna probably start playing some new material, we're gonna add it in some of the shows. All of our shows are a really highenergy, fun spectacle, so I'm looking forward to getting back out there. Should be a great time as always.” The Revivalists have a very unique sound which is influenced by many different musical influences and genres. I was curious to know some of Zack’s musical influences. He replies,

“I love classic rock, like the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Great singer/songwriters like Bill Withers, Paul Simon, James Taylor. I like blues music. As a guitarist, I had a pretty heavy blues guitar sound. I had a kind of jam band phase as well. Plus some of the great modern bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arctic Monkeys are great...more relatively new ones. And the Alabama Shakes. I have kind of a wide range of stuff that I'm into. But when I was a kid, there was the music of the day. There would be the grunge phase. I was pretty young, I was in first grade, but there was Nirvana, Green Day, and stuff like that. It definitely left an impression.” The Revivalists have been performing at a lot of major festivals recently, so I wanted to know if he prefers to perform at festivals or their own show. He states, “They're both great for different reasons. At festivals, you might get more people that are just discovering you, which is a lot of fun. And I like playing outside, and at festivals I know it can be really cool. Where as at a venue show, like a House of Blues show or something like that, it's great because everywhere you sit I can see you, and you're the entertainment of the evening. Generally you can play a longer set and that will mix it up a little more. People will see us multiple nights in a row sometimes, which is fun, so we'll go a little deeper into the catalog. We usually have about four or five songs that we play just about every night, but every set list is different every night.” Due to a large demand, The revivalists decided to reissue “The Sound of Song” on vinyl last year. Zack explains, “It was sold out for a while, so we just needed to remanufacture it. We sold out of the initial pressing, so we just finally got that in stock from being backordered. It's interesting, since vinyl came back in, there's been such a high demand for it and a lot of the manufacturers were closed down in the era of, CDs and digital.” Zack did tell us that they are currently working

on some new material, but as of this interview, there is no release date scheduled for the new album. So definitely be on the look out for some new material from the band in the near future. But until then, you can check out the release of The Revivalists official lyric video for their hit song, “Wish I Knew You.” The video was released the beginning of January. Definitely make sure you go check out The Revivalists live at one of their four Florida shows, and you will be blown away from seeing them perform live. The Revivalists will be performing at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on April 11th and April 12th at the House of Blues in Orlando.

The Weeknd My Dear Melancholy Republic Records gggff by Alex Flood

The Lowdown: For an artist typically defined by excess, The Weeknd’s new 22-minute EP is a careful exercise in restraint and a surprising, conscious step in a new direction. Compared to the chart-topping singles of his last two albums, My Dear Melancholy, takes a step back towards his beginnings by featuring a tightly wound six songs of heartbreak and anger. The Good: One of The Weeknd’s — or rather, Abel Tesfaye’s — primary facets is the murky aesthetic that defines everything he does, and the level of consistency on display is impressive. Tesfaye fully owns his “heartbroken asshole” persona with lyrics deeply petty and personal, and the EP shines when Tesfaye actually conveys that hurt rather than someone playing at it. While it’s familiar, its short running length helps the EP to be Tesfaye’s most focused album since House of Balloons. The Bad: The consuming sameness of the release is ultimately a crutch for Tesfaye. His style can be so overpowering that it mutes contributions from distinct collaborators such as Nicolas Jaar and Gesaffelstein. The songs here may recall the swirling haze and petulant bitterness of his initial mixtapes, but they do so in a sanitized manner, as Tesfaye appears distant. Everything about it, such as the short track length, the unassuming way it was announced as almost a pre-festival season toss-off, and the fact that nothing on here sounds close to a hit single, screams noncommittal.

The Verdict: If the EP was meant to be a way to revisit “mixtape Abel,” it feels thin, lacking the slippery tension that made those tapes so drawing in the first place. My Dear Melancholy, has cohesion, but it’s a listless, murky sound that never unhinges the way you want it to. Had he pushed a little further, it could have made for something more substantial, rather than walking up to the cusp and then backing down. David Byrne American Utopia Nonesuch Records ggggf by Joe Madden

The Lowdown: American Utopia is vintage David Byrne, danceable and bristling with wit. The America he presents is chaotic and contradictory, and the music is, too. The songs contradict each other; they contradict themselves. The characters are rich people and poor refugees and dumb livestock. It’s so American, there’s a song from the perspective of a bullet. The Good: “Everybody’s Coming to My House” is infectious fun built on urgent horns and a bouncy bass. But as the chorus tumbles on, a note of desperation sneaks into the song. “And I’m never going to be alone,” Byrne insists over and over again, as if saying it will make it so. This is perhaps Byrne’s greatest lyrical trick, creating an unreliable narrator who may be lying about his own dance party. From a certain angle, the best song on the album is about agonizing loneliness. The Bad: While some of the songs have a sense of storytelling, others, like “Everyday Is a Miracle” are more like audio collages. Byrne can be cerebral to the point of soullessness. On “Home”, he is more

concerned with scoring philosophical points than making enjoyable music. The Verdict: On American Utopia, Byrne isn’t trying to make pop. He’s 65 years old, he’s got something to say, and he’s out of fucks to give. It’s a worthy effort from a living legend, full of songs that are at least interesting and at times breathtaking. Sunflower Bean TwentyTwo In Blue Mom+Pop Music ggggz by Jamie Milton

The Lowdown: At the tender age of 22, the members of New York-based trio Sunflower Bean have musically matured in a preternatural fashion, moving leaps and bounds beyond the rough-and-ready attack of their 2016 debut album. In a mere two years, they’ve absorbed the history of glam rock and paid enough attention to the world at large to become fully jaded adults. As a result, the 11 songs on Twentytwo in Blue stomp and seethe, while aching for humanity’s future. The Good: With the help of co-producers Jacob Portrait (bassist for Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and Matthew Molnar (exmember of Friends), Sunflower Bean have dropped the tightly packed core of their wiggly rock into a pool of warm water, letting it unroll and swell into something softer and cushier. And they’ve wisely set the emphasis on the enrapturing curl of Julia Cumming’s vocals. Even as she snubs organized religion (“Human For”) and breaks free from a poisonous relationship (“Puppet Strings”), it goes down like a syrupy, potent elixir. The Bad: The band’s youth comes across most strongly in their decidedly lessthan-nuanced lyrics. Cummings and fellow vocalist Nick Kivlen write songs with a punk-like bluntness that rubs roughly against the otherwise frictionless music. They drive

their points home firmly, as in the embittered “Crisis Fest” (“Reality’s one big sick show/ Every day’s a crisis fest … there’s a coup in our country/ It’s happening now”), but often get stuck on rusty turns of phrase (“Who holds the puppet strings to my heart?”) that feel like yearbook quotes. The Verdict: Sunflower Bean have all the ingredients at hand to achieve something truly spectacular. And they’re right on the precipice. Considering how quickly young bands are expected to ripen to survive in our accelerated age, this trio has done a remarkable job evolving from the uneasy steps of their first self-released tracks to this more steady and fleshed-out album. At the moment, it feels more like a sneaky treat than something to provide more substantive fuel. The Breeders All Nerve 4AD Records ggggz by Rhian Daly

The Lowdown: Breeders albums have always doubled as proving grounds. 1990’s debut, Pod, pulverized any skepticism that Pixies bassist Kim Deal couldn’t hack it as a primary songwriter. The record became a seminal part of the decade’s opening alternative rock salvo and inspired no less than Kurt Cobain. Last Splash (1993) demonstrated that a female-fronted band could shift serious units and infiltrate the testosterone-drenched alt-rock airwaves of the time. Later outings Title TK (2002) and Mountain Battles (2008) felt more like wellness checks to assure that both the band’s sound and its members – Kim and Kelley Deal had each battled personal demons – remained intact. Now, a full decade later, All Nerve, the group’s fifth fulllength, faces a different type of challenge: trying to be heard over the alleged pounding of alternative rock’s death knell.
