A&K PHILANTHROPY AND MADRASATI (MY SCHOOL INITIATIVE, BALQUEES SCHOOL, JORDAN

We believe that travel should not only inspire but also respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. Through our charitable division, Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), we have been supporting conservation projects around the world for over three decades. With a ‘high yield, low impact’ policy, we seek to address pressing environmental, educational and public health needs and give more back to the communities in the regions where we operate. This makes a difference to the lives of thousands of people around the world – for example, following the devastating destruction to Myanmar by Cyclone Nargis in 2008, leaving thousands in the Irrawaddy Delta suffering from disease and starvation, A&K rallied to collect over US$340,000 for essential supplies while our teams on the ground ensured that these went directly to those in need. We currently support 30 different projects across the world, from large-scale relief efforts following natural disasters, such as Un Techo Para Chile (A Roof for Chile) following the terrible 2010 earthquake, to initiating local community programmes such as beekeeping in Tanzania or Sam’s Brothers Clean Water project in Cambodia. For every booking we take, a donation is made to A&K Philanthropy and you are welcome to visit our projects when travelling with us. A full list of our projects can be seen on www.akphilanthropy.com

Dear Traveller I founded Abercrombie & Kent in East Africa nearly 50 years ago with little more than a Land Rover, a couple of tents and the all-important icemaker. Little did I know at the time I was creating a blueprint for a travel company that now takes people to every corner of the world in comfort, style and absolute safety. The key to our success? We believe in leaving nothing to chance. We believe in service. We believe in getting to know our clients so we can anticipate their individual needs. We believe that focusing on the little details can elevate a journey from being a great holiday into the experience of a lifetime. We believe that by religiously following these principles, clients will keep coming back to us for their holidays. They do. Now it’s your turn‌

Israel Israel is a compact country whose landscapes echo famous names and momentous events in world history. Few countries have as many hidden gems in such a small space – ideal for a short break centered around Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, two cities that couldn’t be more different. Few places have aroused such far reaching religious and political fervour as Jerusalem; the cheerful hedonism of Tel Aviv, on the other hand, is one of Israel’s best kept secrets. And don’t forget the treasures awaiting you at the Dead Sea.

Jordan Jordan’s greatest legacy is undoubtedly the ancient rose-red city of Petra, but its real beauty is the contrasting geography, legendary hospitality of its people, and the fact that its many world famous sights are in close proximity. The capital Amman is a blend of old and new, where ultra-modern buildings, smart restaurants and boutiques rub shoulders comfortably with traditional coffee shops and tiny artisans’ workshops. From here you can explore the exceptionally preserved Roman colonnaded streets of Jerash, and spend a few days at the natural spa that is the Dead Sea.

Beit Al Mamlouka

Four Seasons Hotel Damascus Four Seasons Hotel Damascus rises in a pillar of timeless architecture beside a serene public garden and an ancient mosque in the heart of downtown Damascus. Within easy reach of retail and cultural sites, the Four Seasons is designed to be the city’s pre-eminent address for visitors and social events. Extremely comfortable and spacious and with superb views, the well equipped rooms and suites are the finest in the city. Large bathrooms feature a deep tub with a hand-held shower and separate glass-walled shower. Our favourite of the three restaurants and lounges is the intimate Syrian gourmet restaurant Al Halabi. Try a meal of popular Syrian mezze and Arabic breads prepared in traditional style, complemented by tantalising desserts including traditional Syrian favourites and French pastries. Indulge in a rejuvenating body treatment in the elegant surroundings of the Balloran Spa and let skilful massage therapists invigorate your body with traditional yet innovative skin treatments.

Beit Al Mamlouka, Damascus Beit Al Mamlouka is Syria’s first boutique hotel, converted from a house dating back to the 17th Century into a hotel over a 3 year period. The hotel is tucked away in a narrow cobbled street in Damascus’s old city, built around a central courtyard featuring citrus trees and a fountain; the only way to recognise the hotel is its salmon-pink coloured walls. The hotel has just eight traditionally styled guest rooms adorned with Damascene brocade curtains and quilts, and each with a courtyard, terraces and private patios. Our favourite is the Suleiman Suite with its rose shaped fountain and magnificent bathroom decorated in mosaic tiles that echoes the Mamlouk period of the building’s origins. The hotel also features an Old Bayke, or stable, converted into a beautiful gallery, restaurant and bar with a mid-16th Century archway and high ceilings. Try a typical Syrian meal consisting of a selection of mezze starters – ‘tabbouleh’ (a salad of wheat, parsley, lemon, tomatoes and dried mint), followed by ‘kibbeh’ (croquettes of lamb) and ‘baba ghanoug’ (eggplant salad) and accompanied by khoobz (Arabic flatbread).

Turkey The Anatolian peninsula is one of the oldest continually inhabited regions in the world due to its location at the intersection of Asia and Europe, bordering the Black Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean coastline is dotted with well-preserved Greco-Roman cities such as Pergamom and Ephesus, while the austere and rugged Anatolian plateau reveals cave churches hidden away in the improbable fairytale landscape of Cappadocia. Istanbul, quintessentially Eastern, is at the heart of the nation, with historic Roman aqueducts, Byzantine churches, glittering Ottoman mosques and palaces on offer, contrasting with the modern glamorous bars, restaurants and the new Istanbul Modern Gallery.
