Arconic is the premier designer and manufacturer of aerospace and industrial fasteners, latches, bearings, fluid fittings, and installation tools. Their products are used nose to tail on commercial and military aircraft, as well as on jet engines, industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, wind turbines, solar power systems, and construction and industrial equipment.
The company, together with its independently endowed Foundation, is also working to improve advanced manufacturing education not only in the United States, but also in the countries where it operates. Through collaboration with nonprofit partners, the Foundation’s initiatives make quality STEM education opportunities available to students and help to create access for underrepresented individuals to the STEM fields through support engineering and technical skills, training through community colleges, vocational technical schools and universities around the world. “Arconic is dedicated to the future of manufacturing and invests in its people, operations, and technology to reinforce an innovative manufacturing culture. We support educational endeavors that help prepare the 21st century engineering and advanced manufacturing workforce, through nonprofit Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs,” said William Hart, Director of Operations at the company’s Fullerton facility.
Among the programs in which the company has been engaged is Titan Racing Team at California State University Fullerton. Part of Society of Aerospace Engineers (SAE) International’s Collegiate Design Series (CDS), this competition take students beyond textbook theory by enabling them to design, build, and test the performance of a real vehicle and then compete with other students from around the globe in exciting and intense competitions. All CDS competitions prepare undergraduate and graduate engineering students for careers.
The company currently recruits interns from various local schools and believes that by working with interns they can establish corporate culture while developing careers.
“The process for gaining an internship at Arconic is extremely competitive,” explained Hart. “But once selected, the interns have an opportunity to engage with leadership. They are truly treated as employees. The internships are project based and culminate with presentations to top management.”
Although nearly 80 percent of the internships offered by the company are in Engineering, the company also offers internships in Finance, Human Resources, and Marketing. Some of the students are presented opportunities for full- or part-time employment following the 12-week summer internship. Individuals are challenged by a hands-on team experience that also requires budgeting, communication, project management, and resource management skills.
Jobs at Arconic are not limited to those receiving four-year degrees. The company’s operations also require skilled employees who have successfully completed technical certificates. At Fullerton, Cypress, and Cerritos Colleges, the programs training machinists, technicians, and electricians have proven to be a source of employees for the Fullerton manufacturer.
“The State of California needs to continue to invest in manufacturing,” noted Hart. “Manufacturing offers competitive wages for skilled employees. Techniques used by manufacturers continue to advance and introduce new, more efficient procedures. Recently, Arconic announced a multi-year cooperative research agreement with a major customer to advance metal 3D printing for aircraft manufacturing,” he continued. “As we move forward, the need for advancements in manufacturing will remain a priority. Competitiveness will rely on predictive analytics and creative problem solving.”
