GENNARO LEWIS DOODLER AND ILLUSTRATOR

Our first artist we got to Interview Genarro Lewis (@genarrolewis on Instagram). Lewis who usually goes by the name Little Lewis is a very dedicated artist. In his bustling activity he works multiple jobs in different places but still art-related. He works as an art director in a company, a lecturer of visual communication in university and also a freelancer at home, and all of those stuffs require dedication.

Foda Mini Magazine / 03

Minimalistic drawing is one of the thing Lewis communicates through his artworks. They are mostly influenced from the big cities such as Paris, London and New York City and daily life comprised in urban life like culture, foods, musics, and love relationship. But nature is also what he loves to share. In our interview he said that beach and pigeon are an icon he loves to present it in his works because he felt like emotionally attached and meant a lot for him. We want you guys to get in depth with him and read the whole interview here! Can you tell us your background? (age, location, education, job/side job, interest/ hobby) Hi ! I’m Gennaro Lewis, aka Little Lewis. I was born and I always lived in Paris, France, from an Italian father and a Danish mother. Since 6 years now, I live in the sunny south of France with my 2 kids. I’m a 80’s kid (I’m 40 y.o) and I grew up listening to hip hop, skateboarding , playing video games on my Atari and Amiga, and hanging out with friends in Paris. When I got my bachelor in visual communication I started working as a graphic designer for a French TV channel in the early 2000’s. I worked there 2 years then I started freelancing. I’ve been doing that 13 years, doing graphic design, illustration, and web design. I worked for many agencies and brands, from Paris to NYC. During this period I really worked my creative skills and style. Today, I work as an art director in a communication agency, I’m a teacher at university (I teach creativity and visual communication), and I love to create stuff without any commercial or client issue. I like the idea to have my life split between all these activities : corporate design (my side job), teaching (I love the exchange with students), and art (my life and passion). I’m working to add a skill to this list as I want to be a tattoo artist too. Since when did you pursue your passion and started drawing

As I work a lot on computers, doing digital work, Since 2 years I felt the express need to go back to the roots, just holding a paper and a pen. I always loved to draw, but not as much as I do today. I want to draw everytime, on everything, and everywhere. I call it doodle art. Right now, are you currently on a project? Or soon? Can you tell us what project it is? I love to experiment and to try new things. I work on evolving my style and pushing the limits. I’ll launch a funny project on my instagram very soon, that will give interaction with my followers. Also, I want to do more murals, and drawing in the streets. I love the feeling of freedom it gives me. As an artist, in what moment do you feel so happy for your accomplishment? Or is there any exhibition that changed your life? At the end of 2014, after a broken relationship, I needed to put myself into deep work to forget. I launched a personal project called #dailydrawing. I have drawn something every single day of 2015 and posted it on social networks. It could be digital or handmade drawing, and I had to do it every single day spontaneously, something inspired by what I’ve done during the day. Often, I was away from home, so I had to draw on a leaf, an egg, a bottle, a shell, a sheet of paper or whatever I could find to draw on. I had a lot of interaction and positive feedback from people and I have done an exhibition of the 365 drawings in 2016. I really felt an accomplishment as it was a long time project. You can see the video report and the 365 drawings on thgdlf.tumblr.com.This project gave me the need to express myself spontaneously, I love the feeling of drawing something quick and share it directly with others. Can you mention tools you use for your works? I use Poscas, Pigma Micron pens, a brush pen, sharpies. For outside drawing I use Molotow markers and Montana cans. What inspires your artworks? My work is influenced by urban culture, music, food, and love relationships. I always been fascinated by the energy of big cities like Paris, London, NYC, but I also need to escape from it and feel the power of nature. I love to live by the seaside and to go back to Paris when that energy is missing me. I also draw pigeons, as it’s the bird you see everywhere in Paris, it reminds me my roots, and pigeons mean a lot of different things to me. I would like to be a bird sometimes, flying over the city and observing

page 7

the beauty of it. My graphic style is influenced by minimalism, Scandinavian and Swiss design, less is more, Dieter Rams, Keith Haring.

Foda Mini Magazine / 03

In most of your work I kind of fascinated by the minimalistic theme you brought, how come you came up with this idea? In my teaching courses about visual communication we explore the basics of a visual message, and I always tell students that you can say a lot of things with a few things, if you are using simple shapes and contrast in the right way. Contrast is really powerful in design and we often forget the power of simplicity and minimalism. When I create something I always ask myself : “what can I remove?” instead of “what can I add?”

And last question, how do you overcome creative blocks? I usually go outside by the seaside, far from my pens, tools, computer. Or I go for a run, and usually one hour running and listening to music, not looking at social networks, turning off notifications, is always giving me some new ideas.

Jesse van der horst ARTIST Our first artist we got to interview is a Netherland-based dooler, Jesse van der Horst (@jesse_creations on Instagram). Jesse, who is only 14 years old, is a very talented young doodler. His gifted skill is surely something you can’t underestimate. In our interview, he said that most of his works are inspired by Hundertwasser and Keith Haringi. Liquid-esque pattern, bold stripes and fish are constituted in a very beautiful fuse and definitely something you will likely to see in his works.

Foda Mini Magazine / 03

As a young teenager, Jesse also shared his daily life activities and his personality as an artist, who been through the process of creativity and innovation. If he was stuck with his works, he would stop for a while and do refreshing stuffs. And recently, Jesse was just involved in a new project. He got to draw on a wall which always has been his dream as an artist. You guys surely want to know more about him. Come, check it further!

Can you tell us your background? (age, location, education, job/side job, interest/hobby) I’m Jesse van der horst and I am 14 years old. I am a young Dutch illustrator and painter based in Doetinchem the Netherlands. I am doing high school. In about two years I will finish it and then I want to go to an art school. My hobbies are soccer and drawing. I love to play soccer with my friends. I also like to go out with my friends in the weekend. I don’t have a job at this moment but sometimes I sell my art.

Right now I am not on a big project, but since I post my artworks on Instagram I get orders from all around the world. So I have a lot of little projects. In the future I want to get some really big projects, like drawing on a car or drawing on a big wall. That seems awesome! (check out his Instagram for details on his draw on wall project mentioned above)

Just found out from your instagram page that you are a 14 years old, since when did you pursue your passion and started drawing? When I was a kid, I was already inspired by artists like Hundertwasser and Keith haring which I combined into my present day artworks. My drawings are a mixture of the styles from Keith haring and Hundertwasser. I took the doodle style from Keith haring and the organic shapes from Hundertwasser. When I was little, I always was drawing with my mom and with my grandma. So the creative part has been in the family for a long time. I mostly draw in black and white, but I recently started to add more colors into my artwork. I think that I can say that I developed a style of my own, which is always in development.

What is your favorite artwork made by you? And why do you love it so much? My favorite artwork is the second big painting I made. I love it because It costed a lot of time to make it. And after this painting I’m using a different style in my artworks. And I like the way I painted it. Can you mention tools you use for your works? For almost all of my artworks I use Posca pens. They are fantastic to work with because there are so many colors and so many sizes.

Right now, are you currently on a project? Or soon? Can you tell us what project it is?

As an artist, in what moment do you feel so happy for your accomplishment? Or is there any exhibition that changed your life? I am feeling happy when I think it is a great artwork.

And last question, how do you overcome creative blocks? I only paint when I want to paint. Because when I have to draw when I am not in the mood it usually isn’t a nice painting. When I’m not in the mood to draw I just chill or I just wait for a couple of hours.

ARTIST

Last artist we have is from our neighbor state nearby, Kenjay Reyes (@Kenjreyes on Instagram) from Philippine! Artistically speaking, artworks made by Kenjay is a very magical and fascinating one. You will see perseverance and devotion in every single works he made. Your eyes will be pampered with a lot of details in every stripe he scratched. He found his passion in theme he brought when he drew “Forestation” (2015). Personally speaking, Kenjay who is an architecture in one of higher institution in Philippine is no different with other people. When he felt like a creative block finding an inspiration in his creative process he would love to spent his leisure time food hunting to restore his mood. Other thing he would love to do is doing a physical activity such as cycling and jogging to relief the stress he encountered in his workplace. For more about Kenjay’s artworks and personality connections find out our interview with him here! Can you tell us your background? (age, location, education, job/side job, interest/hobby)

My whole name is Kenjay Reyes - a 19-year old Architecture student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines who’s currently residing at my hometown in Cavite, Philippines. I love travelling the islands of my country, tasting the foods of each region and even in abroad. Moreover, I was known basically on my illustrations especially in doodling which has been my everyday hobby turned out as a freelance work of art. Since when did you pursue your passion and started drawing. I started drawing since I was in grade school; scribbling, hatching and creating various lines that unconsciously became a habit. Since then, I already began joining competitions and campus organizations that eventually developed my skills. Right now, are you currently on a project? Or soon? Can you tell us what project it is? I am currently working on a huge project based in the US; it is a collaboration coloring book of selected 50 best ink artists of Instagram that ranges around the globe. It really excites me so much knowing that most of my idols and highly admired artists are on a page 15

collab with me.The said coloring book will sooner be available in the US, then Asia and eventually in Europe and sooner around the world. Apart from this, I'm doing freelance works for some companies during my free time.

Foda Mini Magazine / 03

As an artist, in what moment do you feel so happy for your accomplishment? Or is there any exhibition that changed your life? As an artist, it is always a challenge for me to do a task that I had never done before. Being able to join competitions; win or lose, joining group exhibitions, delivering talks and lectures are the things I can consider as an accomplishment already. The smiles and knowledge imparted on the listeners are still the largest part of my achievements. These things harness my skills and therefore a success in my own perspectives. What is your favorite artwork made by you? And why do you love it so much? I love every artwork that my hand created but if there's any of which that I love, it is the "Forestation" doodle that I made last 2015. It's the artwork where I can finally say that I already found my own style; organic, art nouveau, and realistic. Portraiture and intricate doodle elements incorporates a single artwork that creates harmony. Can you mention tools you use for your works?

In regards with my artworks, my media ranges on a few equipments to be considered; pens, pencils, brushes and different type of boards. For pens, my first choice is a Titus pen - a local pen available in the Philippines that creates fine lines and great for its strokes. For the pencils, Steadtler pencils with different grades are the best of its category. On the other hand, nylon brushes can be used as a good medium in rendering as an alternate of pencils. What inspires your artworks? Nature and the beauty of human anatomy inspire me the most as they can commonly see on most of my artworks. And last question, how do you overcome creative blocks? Creative blocks are normal to any artists whether you're a beginner or an expert one. In my case, whenever I encounter this, I always go outside my workplace, stretch, and do some physical exercises like bicycling, jogging and sometimes go to my favorite restaurants to search for the menu and eat everything my tummy wants. A cup of hot coffee is also relaxing to a tiring mind. Everything said above are just some of my habits that suits me, still, it depends on what makes you feel comfortable and away from any annoyance that interfere your creative juices on flowing. Stay creative and "Mabuhay!" from the Philippines!

A self-taught artist who thinks that having no professional art training gives him the encouragement and freedom to simply create from his heart. My artwork concept is more on storytelling. In one image you can see many thing related to each other, which can create a story. Some artwork begins with the story, some artwork evolves parallel with the drawing. I want the viewer to feel more of my artwork rather than understanding it. page 37
