“BOLT-ON’S” FOR WOMEN By Chris “Rowdi” Yates
Get your mind out of the gutter! This is a motorcycle magazine. Have you ever heard the adage “If she ain’t happy, no-body’s happy”? Then you know you better be accessorizing the bike for her! Foot comfort is important, or she might melt her boots on your pipes. Low pegs, mid pegs, gynecologist pegs, (keep her happy). You ever look at the stock backseat on a Soft tail or Dyna? Looks like a gymnast’s balance beam and hits like a baseball bat at bumps. Save that pounding for something else and increase the cush with an add-on seat made for wider tushes and you will make her day! Forget that low sissy bar for looks; raise that cushion high so she can sit back in comfort. Well let’s see… feet, tush, back, oh yeah, brain! Harley and the aftermarket offer a multitude of accessory music bolt-on’s for her listening pleasure. Bolt on a GPS and she always be confident to tell you where to go! Add on some spider lights under your gas tank, and she’ll feel like she’s on stage dancing on that ride! Look into what a “Vibe-Rider” will do her and your quest is complete!

BIKE FACTS:
JAY SPRINGSTEEN’S
Harley Davidson XR 75O0 by Jim Wagner
In 1976 Jay Springsteen became the second youngest (by only 5 days) competitor, at age 18, to ever win the American Motorcyclist Association’s prestigious Class C Championship in 1976, then again in 1977 and 1978. Over his 30+ year career, “Springer’s” working –class attitude and tenacious approach to racing made him a legend among the crowd favorites. Jay’s championships all came as a member of the Harley factory team but he continued racing XR750s throughout his dirt track career, winning 40 national events. This XR750 a 1989 model was originally owned by Bill Bartel of Bartel’s Harley Davidson in California, one of Springer’s long-time sponsors. The bike came to DOC’S, by way of R. K. Stratman, long time friend of Bill and Jay. By 1989 Harley only sold XR750 engines unassembled, some of the 800 parts weren’t even machined. Jim Kelly was Bartel’s engine builder, 50+ man hours were required to produce about a hundred horsepower out

of 750 cc which is 45 cubic inches. Once completed the engine was mated to a purpose-built chromoly steel dirt tracker frame built by Terry Knight of Knight Frames. Modified sport-bike forks are assembled with adjustable-offset triple clamps. Wheels are from Performance Machine with specific Goodyear dirt track tires. This is a twin shock chassis equipped with Works Performance shocks, adjustable for spring preload as well as compression and rebound damping. Exhaust is from Supertrapp and is equipped with unobtainable aluminum megaphones. The chassis is completed with a dirt track seat and tail section, the fuel tank is a true work of art, hand-made from aluminum by Jack Hageman. This 330 pound, 100 horsepower race bike in the hands of a rider as talented as Springer is capable of negotiating a one-mile dirt oval, like the one at the Springfield Illinois Fairgrounds, in 35 seconds averaging over 100 mph , sliding sideways through the corners and attaining over 130 mph on the straight-aways. Watching a single rider time trial is a thing of beauty maybe one of the
purest forms of man and machine. In the main event, 18 riders race 25 laps, it is like a drag race with a hundred corners and fifty straights, they bang handlebars in the corners to get the best run at the straight-aways where they use the draft to slingshot past each other then pitch it into the corner and repeat on the next straight. It is like a human chess game played out over 25 laps at triple digit speeds, 18 men and machines all jockeying for position to reach the checkered flag first. Gotta have a lot of respect for Springsteen and his machine. Springer’s XR on display at DOC’S Harley Davidson in southwest St. Louis County, Kirkwood, Missouri.

BByLPeter A CSchneider K SUNSHINE CUSTOMS With all the builders out there these days it is hard to find someone with an original twist on things. Either you have your typical 250-300 tire long bike cookie cutter chopper, or your “ol skool” flat black with red and white pinstriping bobber. Today it seems harder and harder to find someone that does stand out in a crowd. Then you meet someone like Brian Elliott of Black Sunshine Customs That throws your head for a loop. Brian has a style that is one of a kind, and an attitude that matches his style. To put it into words I would describe it as ol skool with a new attitude. No bull shit, no frills, but just enough original style to put him in a class of his own. Brian started out like most of us, with a bike and a dream, 21 years ago with his first shovelhead project. At the time all Brian really knew was how to paint and tinker with an engine. His first project took over a year relying on outsourcing many of his labor tasks to other builders he knew. Brian quickly found out that if you want something done right and in a timely manner, do it yourself. This bumped Brian’s game up to the next level. He now builds everything material up. His frames are his own, his front ends, oil tanks, gas tanks, fenders, handlebars etc. are all machined and fabricated by Brian himself. This allows him to truly build a, “one-off” custom every time. With leaving no detail ignored or overlooked his bikes are truly works of art. Brian is finally getting the recognition he deserves, with one of his bikes, “goldy lox” being featured on stage at broken spoke saloon in Sturgis this year. Plus his personal bike being featured in a nationwide publication, and being an up and coming builder on the Limpnickie lot, Brian is definitely one of the next builders to watch.

A LETTER TO “THE HONORABLE RAY LAHOOD” SECRETARY, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
By Bruce Arnold
Dear Mr. Secretary: Distracted driving is turning our nation’s roadways into killing corridors, and it is time for “Pay Attention or Pay the Price” to become more than a hollow slogan. If we are to stop the slaughter... AMERICAN MOTORISTS WHO ENGAGE IN DISCRETIONARY DISTRACTIONS MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE HARM THEY CAUSE. -- By “American motorists”, I mean (a) all who share our roads via two wheels, four or more; and (b) regardless of age, experience, license class, nationality or other arbitrary distinction. -- By “discretionary distractions”, I mean all activities in which a motorist might elect to engage that are known or might reasonably be expected to impair or detract from their ability to drive safely, including but not limited to cell phone conversations or texting, grooming or applying cosmetics, and eating behind the wheel. -- By “held accountable for the harm they cause”, I mean more than being ticketed for failure-to-yield every time they turn left without looking and murder a motorcyclist. I mean being required to pay restitution for the loss, damage or injury caused by their election not to pay attention. And I mean taking away their license and their freedom when their decision to drive distracted results in the injury or death of innocent people.
20
Legally banning the distractions would likely work about as well and last about as long as Prohibition. And laws that penalize only teens or truckers for texting, or prohibit only cell phone conversations via hand-held devices, are “feel good” half-measures difficult to enforce and easy to ignore. It is not so difficult, however, to determine if a driver causing an accident was texting, talking on a cell phone, eating a cheeseburger or painting their nails at the point of impact. And if the penalties for causing an accident while engaging in discretionary distractions are severe, they are not likely to be ignored. And what should those penalties be? Any Internet search engine will provide you with numerous references to studies indicating that driving while distracted is just as dangerous, if not more so, than driving while impaired from alcohol or drugs. And since driving while distracted and driving while impaired are both discretionary activities with equivalent social costs, should they not carry equivalent legal penalties? Severe DUI/DWI penalties have not eliminated drunk driving, of course. But according to MADD.org, since 1980 alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased nearly 50 percent. That is largely due to the deterrent effect of significantly increasing the penalities associated with causing an accident while driving drunk, coupled
with an impactive barrage of related PSAs. Mounting a similar campaign against distracted driving, it seems, would yield similar results. Speaking strictly for myself and no other individuals or organizations, Bruce Arnold Bruce@LdrLongDistanceRider.com Author and Publisher, LdrLongDistanceRider.com Co-Moderator, Bruce-n-RC’s Biker Forum Mile Eater Gold Member, Iron Butt Association (IBA) Sustaining Member, Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) 2009 Chairman’s Circle, American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) 1521 Alton Road No. 262 . CAMP HOPE VOLUNTEERS: LIVING THE MISSION
By Susan L. Dragon
Farmington, Missouri—August 27, 2009—Following the devastating loss of his son, Marine Corporal Chris Neal White, to an I.E.D. (Improvised Explosive Device) in June of 2006 in Iraq, William (“Mike”) White worked through his sadness and grief while hunting alone for the first time since Chris enlisted in the Marines. Chris had been his Dad’s hunting partner every year since he was a little kid and his absence that first deer season was painful. But that pain gave birth to an idea. While sitting alone in the woods, Mike thought about the other military service members and their families, whose lives would be forever changed by injury and death. He thought of those who; like Chris, grew up hunting and enjoying the outdoors, but who now felt they were unable to do so, due to their combat related injuries and disabilities. He thought that if he could help them get back out into nature, doing what they enjoy, they would heal faster, both in body and spirit. He also felt that doing so, in his son’s memory, could help he and his wife Galia, Chris’ mother, heal as well. “Nature heals” has become a motto for Camp Hope and for the dozens of volunteers that helped make Camp Hope what it is today. A place of rest, healing and for most, a place of renewed hope. Having grown up in Valley Mines, Missouri, Mike knew what rich hunting and fishing resources were in that area, and in late 2007, he purchased the land and renovated the small farmhouse sitting on the property now known as Camp Hope. 80 miles south of St. Louis, in rural Farmington, Camp Hope is 180 acres nestled among rolling hills, a waterfall flowing into clear water streams, beautiful natural vistas and rustic elephant rock formations surrounded by wide open ranges rich with wildlife. It was to become a perfect setting for carrying out Mike’s new mission -- the mission of Camp Hope. The first hunters were welcomed on Veterans Day weekend 2007. Working with Operation Second Chance, an organization that provides support for the Soldiers and Marines at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., the Camp Hope Board and volunteers received details of their first group of guys to come to Camp Hope. Mike said it was incredible to watch the guys transform from stressed and introverted strangers, to relaxed and open comrades and friends whose stories and experiences were so similar to each other’s. The only thing the hunters have to pay for is getting there. All other expenses are covered by Camp Hope through volunteer donations of food, supplies, physical assistance and funds. Before the second hunt ensured, Camp Hope worked with Operation Second Chance to sponsor legislation in the Missouri Congress which changed the law that required out-of-state service members to purchase a license to hunt in Missouri, resulting in the $185.00 fee being waived altogether for disabled service members. In January of 2008, Camp Hope launched its capitol campaign to raise money for the construction of a new lodge to replace the old, small and non-handicapped-accessible farm house. Preliminary plans for the lodge have been designed by architect and retired Army National Guard LTC, Frederick W. Hill who donated his time and talents to the plan. The new lodge will be a modern but rustic, handicapped-accessible facility to accommodate the dozen or so service members that come each deer and turkey season to enjoy hiking, hunting, fishing, skeet shooting and canoeing with the assistance of the volunteers at Camp Hope. Those who don’t want to hunt can apply to just spend a few days of relaxation at the camp with their family. As the Camp Hope Mission Statement says, “our service members wounded in our nation’s wars face huge hurdles every day because of the sacrifice they gave for our freedom. Our goal is to give them back some of the freedom they preserved for us.” Camp Hope’s motto is “Our Thank You For Serving.” Founder Mike White, the volunteers and dozens of service organizations through out the country have raised more than $50,000 in support of Camp Hope’s mission to serve our combat wounded and disabled veterans, and to fund the building of the new lodge, but more is needed and the mission continues. A REAL BIKER
By Bob Kintz
C.J. Kintz, a 70 year old Harley rider from St. Louis returned from Sturgis to find that she had broken her leg in a minor accident; just 150 miles into the trip...It took numerous Advil (and a 6 pack of Bud Select each evening) but, along with her husband Bob and 2 friends, Sharon & Steve, she completed the remaining 2,300 miles of the trip, For all you Yuppie Trailer Queens, who haul your $30,000+ motorcycles to South Dakota to putt around Sturgis for 2 or 3 days, think of this old lady before you call yourself “A Biker.
ASK
JAWS
SEPTEMBER! Hope everyone who made Sturgis had a great time and made it back safely .And those of you who didn’t go, next year is 70th anniversary should be more than enough bikers there. Well for the second year in a row I committed the cardinal sin. That’s right hauled the bike out in the toy hauler and believe me it is a tough trip for me as I see so many people passing me in the wind, but when you are going to camp for 9 days and the old lady wants to go if she isn’t comfortable you’re not going to be either . We have done the camping in the tent I don’t have a problem with the heat but the old lady can’t handle it. And we bought the damn thing just for this and she is right and when you are going to stay this long it helps to have electricity a place to cook and coolers for beer so it is nice to have I just wish I didn’t have to haul it. I’ve made the trip on the bike six times ,of the six times twice was up the same day and three times home the same day ,the other times on the way up were extended trips west. And I sure do miss the riding but that’s the way it goes, alright enough pity on me. I hope you are going to make the LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKEFEST this year it’s the third annual and for your best chance on winning a new bike the odds are probably the best you’ll find so come down & complete the passport run and good luck I would enter but if I won there would be some folks who would say it was a setup so I can’t enter. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we have a good turnout if you see me there don’t hesitate to buy me a BUDWEISER and say “hi” but I must warn you they don’t call me JAWS for nothing don’t plan on a short conversation. Hope to see you all there. For those who made the benefit and those who donated gifts thank you all, Jim, Wayne, and Bob, they did a great job selling raffle tickets I wasn’t much help with them but I was handling the PR on the floor. Matt wants to thank everyone for coming we also got some bad news after everything was going so good the leukemia is back as I write this he is back in the hospital starting everything over again. I will keep you up to date on his progress. I always forget because he has been battling leukemia also for 12 yrs. But my father in law has it also he was in remission for a number of yrs. And now his has returned also. F&^% this disease I don’t know what else to say about it hopefully they find a cure for it. Well the company unveiled the 2010’s up at the convention center in Rapid City and I have to say I was impressed with the bikes and I really liked the street glide trike . They had one there blacked out and I must say it was very impressive. The ultra trike was cool also what I think the company is trying to do isn’t a bad idea. There are people out there who want to ride and the conversions have been around for a long time so I would rather see someone on three wheels comfortable than on two wheels uncomfortable it makes it safer for all of us. If the intimidation of being on two wheels and knowing you could fall over or not being able to handle the leaning and knowing how to counter steer is too much then get a trike for your safety as well as ours. And I’ll tell you what there were people out in Sturgis again who had no F$#@ing business being out there but they are what I call inconsiderate bikers because of their stingy ego’s of wanting to go to Sturgis and not knowing how to ride they cross center lines they fall over into other bikes they run into people , they run off the road the list goes on and on. That said I would rather have an experienced rider that has a few beers in them on the road with me than an inexperienced rider remember folks my opinion, when you are riding the black hills you better know how to handle the bike because thousands of riders are there and one slip up and you could kill or cause several bikes to go down so learn your sled or get a trike but don’t go until you are totally comfortable riding in close proximity with other bikes. When I go out there it’s to ride without hassles but because so many new riders show up each year and have wrecks or run off the road we have been hit with 35 MPH speed limits that have taken away from the riding and now they are posted throughout the hills and every time you come across the reduced speed limits there is a police car waiting for you , for years we have ridden these roads and the normal speed limit is 55 MPH so roads you could lay your bike into the curves are now barely lean curves I know why they do this but I guess if we are going to ride free out there anymore it’s going to be before are after the rally just more of them taking control of rally so beware if you plan on going next year the speed limits could be 25 MPH after all take care of the 10 percent who shouldn’t be on a bike out there in the first place not the 90 percent that know what they’re doing well that’s all.
REMEMBER KEEP THE SHINEY SIDE UP AND THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN Learn how to ride before attending a rally with lots of people not only for NEW RIDER TIP: your safety but for others also.

Her company, Whitesitt Kargus Studio, specializes in architectural renderings, but her passion is painting portraits of people’s motorcycles. “I love to paint motorcycles because I love all the reflections in the metal
surfaces and getting every detail perfect.” says Jo Ann Jo Ann works in pencil, watercolor, acrylic or airbrush to create photorealistic paintings. “A custom portrait is special for each owner- either to keep or to give as a gift. People love their bikes” Jo Ann’s prices range from $300 to $3,000

Reggie You know what they say about big boys... they have big hearts. Reggie is a true love bug in every sense of the word. Cuddle time is his favorite part of the day, but don’t get me wrong running and playing are a close second. Proven true to the breed, he is great with kids and adults alike, taking careful consideration with the little guys (most of the time) he is still a pup you know. Reggie gets along great with other dogs but if he is going to live in a home with one they will have to be just the right dog. Reggie likes being dominant but he will submit to a true alpha canine woman. Bulldogs have his heart and he could live with male or female (don’t ask why it is just what we have found from experience when we have had bulldogs as fosters). Cats and furry critters would have longer lives if they don’t live with Reg, he sees them as a fun game of chase. So if you think Reggie is the right fit for you, make a date to meet this hunky big boy.

RATIER
750 CEMEC L7-5 1956 The history of CEMEC began in late 1944 when CMR (“Center for Assembly and Repair of Motorcycles”) was set up to dispose of the stocks of motorbikes- principally BMW R12s- that had been abandoned in France by the retreating German army. Manufacturing Begins In 1947, the CMR was closed down and CEMEC was established, rapidly becoming a manufacturer in its own right. CEMEC had new one-piece crankcases made (that of BMW was in two parts), a tubular frame (instead of the pressed –steel unit of the R12), and a final drive unit copied from that of the BMW R71, and a foot-operated gear shift (the R12 had a hand shift). Thus, the first CEMEC L7 was built. French in Name Only Most of the parts of this nominally French motorcycle were either copied or adapted from the components of various BMW models. Initially equipped with twin carburetors, it later adopted a singlecarb set up, which meant a heated intake pipe. Heavy but indestructible, the CEMEC L7 was used by most government departments. However, this cumbersome was horse actually had a sporty career because, in 1952, a CEMEC won the sidecar category of the Bol d’Or. CEMEC closed down in 1954. Manufacturing was taken over by Ratier, a well-known maker of airscrews looking to diversify. Ratier made BMW- derived motorcycles until 1960. The last side-valve L& was 26 hp L7-8 of 1957-58, which reverted to the twin-carburetor layout and could reach 83 mph. CEMEC and Ratier built some 2500 L7’s. SPECS
Engine: 748cc air-cooled flat-twin four stroke Power Rating: 20 hp @ 4300 rpm Valves: side valve Fuel System: Solex 30mm carburetor Suspension: telescpoc forks (front); plunger (rear) Brakes: drum (front & rear) Wheels: 19” wire Max Speed: 73 mph

Since the inception of Fink’s Forum, I’ve tried to be diverse on the subjects that I write about. Trying to interest the readers on topics that might open minds or peek interest. Give some insight into my world of tattooing and the places and people it has led me to. So, even though the article itself might appear not to have anything to do with tattooing, in a round about way, it does. Thus far all the things that I have written about have had some influence in my life and been an inspiration to me artistically. For this months article the subject relation to tattooing could not be more blatant. After turning down numerous requests by Colonel Kleinhans of the Full Throttle Army, to show my own work I have finally given in. A braggart, I am not! As for my work, my mentor and teacher, Honest Mitch Mitchell, always instilled in me to let my work speak for itself! I live in beautiful St. Louis. I travel to NY on a regular basis to tattoo at my
two shops in Manhattan, Daredevil Tattoo and Fun City Tattoo. I work on an appointment only basis and book 4-8 weeks out. I’m competitive and reasonably priced. I take consultations Monday thru Friday, between noon and 1, although it’s always best to shoot me an email to make sure I’m in town. All right!!! Maybe a little selfpromotion… But that’s it! If you would like to get some work, drop me an email.

JERRY & TRACY RIPLEY
Ok, was this past month August, or October? 70 degrees? We went on some great rides and attended some awsome events. Now here we are in September and Lake of the Ozarks Bike Fest is coming up! The Full Throttle Army will be there in force and we cant wait! Also, Sunday Sept 20th, you dont want to miss the Centerville PT’s Bike Rodeo. It starts at 2pm and this is going to be a blast. Lots of great things planned for this and there will be some surprises as well, so come out. Live music by HUSH and if you think they rock indoors, come see them outside! Naturally, where you find HUSH, you will find Tracy and they wont be far apart as usual!
On a sad note, we have had to many fallen bikers this year. Tracy and I just learned of another last night and we knew her well. Theres alot of bikers out there but when we lose one, it leaves a huge hole in the group. Please be careful out there folks. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost. Well I hate to say it but Bike season only has a few good months left. Tracy and I are already working on plans for next year in Illinois thanks to some great feedback from all of you. We cant let anything out yet, but just wait. Theres gonna be some big things happening!
Keep the wind in your face, and enjoy the ride!

B.A.D. RIDE IN L.A.
Have you ever dreamed of raising money for a great Charity Organization and also win an awesome trip at thesame time? Three families from the St. Louis area achieved this dream this past year. Steve, Robin, Cayla and Courtney Pulley from Collinsville, IL, Shane and Colleen Kempfert from Florissant, MO, John Crandell and Maggie Atchison from St. Louis, MO each won a trip to Los Angles, Ca this past June to the American Diabetes Rip’s BAD Ride (Biker’s Against Diabetes) XII, by raising at least $3800.00 at the 2nd Annual American Diabetes Rip’s BAD Ride last year here in St. Louis, MO. The 3 families flew to Los Angles, CA and attend the VIP Party held at Knox Berry Farm. There they had a surprise visit by Larry Hagman from I Dream of Jennie and JR in Dallas, who came to the party. The following day they did the Rip’s BAD ride and ended up at the Oak Canyon Park in Orange County, CA. There they were entertained by bands, vendors, bike games and bike show.
The Pulley family raised over $7,800.00 and combing with the other two families, they all raisa total of over $16,000.00!!!!. The biggest incentive for each of these families was raising money for diabetes, because each of these families have a family member that is diabetic. Cayla Pulley is 20 years old and has been diabetic since she was 10 yrs old. She was able to experience the excitement of over 1,000 motorcycles coming together, and raising over $250,000.00 for the Rip’s BAD Ride in LA. The Kempfert ‘s have a daughter Ashley 19 yrs.old, that has been diabetic since she was 15 yrs. old, and John Crandell is diabetic himself. It was an awesome experience that no one will ever forget and would definitely want to raise more money for next year to come back! Rip’s BAD Ride started 12 years ago by Rip Rose. Rip was a biker and photojournalist for Easyriders Magazine and had a dream of a Biker Nation rallying to fight diabetes. Rip enlisted the support of the Davidson Family, motorcycle industry leaders and bikers touched by diabetes.

Today, Rip’s dream is a reality. The ride began in Southern California in 1998 with 300 riders and has grown to more than 8,000 riders from 18 start sites converging into Oak Canyon Park, Orange County, CA. Rip passed away in 2000 and his legacy lives on as Rip’s B.A.D. ride has grown.

I researched both of these bikes after reading the Dyno reports and watching the track testing’s. Both bikes are reasonably close in specifications and in price. However, if you are 5’ 7” or taller like me, you may want to consider getting the Suzuki Gladius because of its height, handle bar design and it’s thicker body. The Gladius has an awesome ride to it and if you are a novice rider, it won’t scare you. The overall design and feel of the bike is really nice. I would have no problems putting this one out on the road for a nice back country run with a few friends. The only downside to the Gladius is that when you lay it over in a turn it starts to scrap the ground a little. So, if you’re into the extreme cornering, don’t get to low on this one, it’s not recommended. Now, over to the Kawasaki ER-6n. This bike is designed for the rider that is under the 5’ 7” marker, it has a thinner body to it and just like the Suzuki Gladius it will not scare you if you are a novice rider. As for the handle bar design, it is a little strange and somewhat uncomfortable due to the height and shape of them. Too long on the road with these bars and my back and shoulders would hurt. Great news though, you can change them and put some drag bars in their place. The cornering was really good, I was able to get low without scrapping anything or feeling that the bike would come out from under me. I enjoyed both bikes, however, I would have to agree with the pro-riders this time around that the Suzuki Gladius is the better bike of the two. I would recommend both bikes for a novice rider and suggest riding them both before making your choic By Stan Perret
UK - KTM 125 AND SUPER DUKE BRAKE PROBLEM INVESTIGATION:
By Stan Perret
In the UK, a number of riders of the Super Duke have reported brake lock-up problems that have thrown the riders from the bikes causing some mirror and serious damage. The initial investigations indicated that the problem is restricted at this time to the bikes that are mostly ridden throughout the winter time conditions resulting in the corrosion of and affecting the Brembo Calipers. Currently this investigation is listed as ‘On Going’. The investigation also reports that the number of injuries and incidents are low and still confined to the bikes that are ridden throughout the winter time conditions.
