“Rowdy” Yates Tech Corner As you head out into the wide open spaces this summer, there’s a few things that you need to consider before you go! Do you have enough tread on your tires for a long trip? If your tires tread is down to 2/32’s it’s a safe bet you’ll need a tire. (Sturgis is about eleven hundred miles from St. Louis) Going there are back will have your cords on your tire showing. Does your bike need maintenance? Is your battery up to par or will pass away on you in the middle of nowhere? If your battery’s four years old, it’s a gamble on a two-thousand mile trip. Here at Gateway Harley, we cater to travelers all season long, while they wait for maintenance, tires, etc…. if you find the right dealership along the path you choose, the hassle of appointments and waiting can be a breeze. Large events like Sturgis bring many businesses and mechanics from across the country to tend to your needs, but like a tattoo it’ll cost you more than at home! The sheer magnitude of volume can put you on a one week waiting list! A buddy of mine found out the hard way and rode his bike home with the cords showing! If you’re riding hard, putting five to eight hundred miles a day on your bike, oil consumption can be extreme! (Actually normal) So check your level at fueling and watch for dealerships along the way to purchase oil and commemorative at! Have a competent mechanic check your bike out before you leave and don’t skimp on maintenance. Your most important tool on the road is your cell phone but don’t call me cause I’ll be riding! ‘PRINCESS AUTUMN’ BRINGS TOGETHER COPS, FIREFIGHTERS AND BIKERS

Cops, firefighters and bikers filled Shane and Wiesie’s Bar & Grill in St. Peters, MO, on July 12th, for a poker run throughout St. Charles County. The Blue Knights and the Professional Firefighters of Eastern Missouri sponsored the fundraiser to help cover the expenses incurred during Autumn Broderick’s cancer treatments. When Patty and Ed Copeland learned of the circumstances surrounding Autumn and her mother Lauren Hutchens, “I knew we needed to raise some money for this baby,” says Patty. “There is nobody bigger hearted than bikers…. especially when it comes to children.” Patty’s wheels were turning and after months of preparation, old friends and new, gathered at the designated stops to pull a card for their poker hand, have a drink and share a few tall tales. By noon, the clouds loomed and quick decisions lead some to attempt to out run the pending storm, while others set tight waiting for it to blow over. But no one abandoned the mission of raising money to help ‘Princess Autumn.’ Despite the torrential rain everyone arrived safely at the Professional Firefighter’s of Eastern Missouri hall in St. Peters. The evening kicked off with barbecue, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, and music provided by The Salt Creek Band. “Our local businesses have been so generous with their donations,” says Patty. “We cannot thank everyone enough for their generosity.” In November, Autumn fell when she got tangled up with her dog. X-rays of her leg from the knee down indicated no injury. But, by New Years Eve she had developed a limp that landed them in the emergency room. This time, x-rays were taken from the hip down revealing a tumor on her thighbone. Autumn, her mother Lauren and Grandmother Paula Loehrer were sent St. Louis Children’s Hospital for a CAT scan the following day. As the hours dragged on more tests were performed. Fear gripped their hearts. When the doctor finally arrived, their worst fears became reality as he uttered the words, “It is cancer”. Autumn was scheduled for surgery the following day to remove the tumor. “It took a week to get the rest of the test results and that was the longest week of my life,” says Paula. “It was confirmed that she was stage 4s of Neuroblastoma. The cancer was throughout her body.” Autumn was scheduled for another surgery to remove two more tumors. At 18 months she weighed only 18 pounds. “She had a tumor the size of a golf ball on her adrenal gland,” says Paula. “And another tumor the size of a baseball was removed from her abdomen between her kidney and liver.” In the last six months, Autumn has endured 7 rounds of chemotherapy and the first step of a tandem transplant of stem cells drawn from her own bone marrow to help her body grow cancer free cells for healing. For weeks Autumn and Lauren lived in an isolation room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Autumn will receive another round of chemotherapy and is scheduled for the second transplant on August 3rd, only three days after her 2nd birthday. The transplant will be followed by weeks of isolation, two weeks of radiation and the cancer fighting drug accutane. Lauren is a remarkable young woman that in the blink of an eye had her world turned upside down. She is at her daughter’s side night and day. The majority of the last six months Lauren and Autumn have lived at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the bills are piling up because she is unable to work. Due to the kindness of everyone involved in the poker run an estimated $8,000 was raised. Now, Lauren can pay for the necessary over-the-counter drugs that Autumn needs and not fret over whether she can put gas in the car to get Autumn to and from the hospital. “I am amazed at the generosity of the people in the community,” says Lauren. “So many people have given so much. Many do not even know us. Thank you to everyone. HELMET LAW AND GOVERNOR JAY

By now everyone is aware that on July 2, 2009, Governor Jay Nixon vetoed Senate Bill 202, legislation that would have repealed Missouri’s current helmet law for motorcycle riders. Personally, I don’t understand why anyone was surprised by Jay’s veto. In truth, there was never a chance the Bill would become law. This was just a “political dance” being played out as it did years ago when a similar bill was passed, only to be vetoed by the late Governor Carnahan. I knew Jay would veto Senate Bill 202 Jay has been my friend for nearly thirty years. I’ve spoken to allot of riders who are upset over the veto. Anyone who is upset over this issue won’t find solace here. I will simply explain how I knew Jay would veto the bill. Jay of course is the pride of Desoto here in Jefferson County, Missouri. He’s a “Dragon” through and through. Jay’s dad, Jeremiah Nixon, was a very successful attorney and real estate developer. In the early eighties Jay graduated from Mizzou Law and began practice. This was less than a year after I began practice. At the time I wore a full beard, and Jay was clean shaven, but because we were both tall, young associates with local law firms, courthouse personnel used to confuse us with each other. Jay and I both found this amusing. I had some of our earliest trial experiences against Jay. Along with other young lawyers in the County, Jay and I formed a softball team. Of course we named our team the “Sharks”. On dozens of summer nights after our games, we Sharks enjoyed the two-dollar pitchers of beer at Squeaker’s Tavern in Crystal City I would stop by Jay’s apartment in Festus many evenings after work. We’d to listen to music, have a beer, and engage in discussion. Jay learned that my sole ambition was

to be a successful trial lawyer. And I learned that even then, Jay’s singular ambition, urged by his father, was to be a politician. Jay told me with absolute certainty that he would one day be Governor of this State. On the day that Jay’s dad decided to leave his prestigious firm to start a new one with Jay, Jeremiah treated Jay, myself, our friend and Shark teammate John Rayfield, and Jay’s best friend from high school, Cindy Hedger to a steak dinner at Festus’ finest restaurant. In these early years, Jay’s political career moved quickly. After a stunning upset of our County’s fourterm Sherriff in a race for the State legislature, Jay sought to become our State’s youngest Attorney General. The race was virtually handed to him when our outgoing Attorney General was caught using our state’s Worker’s Compensation Second Injury Fund, which is represented by the Attorney General’s office, as a political slush fund for Republican lawyers. Several of the involved lawyers and an Administrative Law Judge were sentenced to time in the Federal Corrections Facility in Greenville, Illinois for their misdeeds. As a result, Jay was swept into the Attorney General’s office in a Democratic landslide. After sixteen years as our State’s A.G., Jay became our Governor in 2008. I want to stress that Jay Nixon is in no way a “safety weenie”. Jay is, or at our age I guess I should say has been, a fierce athlete. He had an absolute cannon of an arm. He could hit me with a perfect spiral forty yards downfield in our flag football games. He had a wonderful ploy as the Sharks leftfielder where he would feign bobbling or missing the ball to encourage the runner to try to advance. Jay would then gun the runner down

with a rocket throw from the fence. He ruled in our Tuesday night basketball games at the Desoto High School Gymnasium along with now legendary basketball coach Allan Davis. Jay took me skiing in the back bowl of Arapaho basin, the most incredibly challenging downhill I’ve ever attempted. In so doing, he taught me the meaning of the skiing term “yard sale”. That’s when I fell on a decent so steep that I couldn’t stop. I skidded, and flipped: scattering skis, poles, goggles, gloves and equipment, so that the hillside looked as if someone was holding a yard sale on it. He’s canoed the freaking Missouri River clear across the state. And I have no doubt that Jay could even now defeat much younger opponents on a tennis court. I’d love to tell you about how Jay is one of us, about the brutal trail rides or “iron butt” cross country street rides we shared. But that wouldn’t be true. Jay, like most other lawyers back in the eighties, thought I was rather eccentric with my passion for motorcycles. But my point is, Jay is an athlete and outdoorsman. He is not among those trying to wrap the world in bubble wrap. He understands the joy of challenging kinetics and the concept of controlled risk. I think most cyclists supported Senate Bill 202. I was in favor of it. I’m a big believer in wearing a quality helmet, usually a full face helmet, whenever I ride. Street or dirt, I’m wearing a helmet, just as I’m wearing eye protection. I like to go fast, and it’s not comfortable riding at speed without proper headgear. Regardless, I don’t believe there is a need for the government to tell me what I can and cannot do in this regard. But I learned how Jay approaches things as a politician shortly after he became our State’s

21 Attorney General. Jay and I were taking a long ride up a ski lift. Jay knew I was a lawyer who handled allot of Worker’s Compensation cases. So Jay asked me how I thought he should handle the State Worker’s Compensation Second Injury Fund in the wake the scandal created by his predecessor in office. My recommendation was based on the best interests of my clients. Jay told me that he would take a different approach. At least in the short term Jay’s approach wasn’t as good for my clients. But Jay’s priority was to restore the confidence of all Missourians in the integrity and honesty of their government. Even today, we street riders are a minority. Most Missourians do not ride. And because of their justifiable concerns about the rising cost of healthcare, and the cold hard reality of the staggering cost of TBI (traumatic brain injury) cases, most Missourians want us to wear helmets. These realities are reflected in Senate Bill 202 itself which would have continued to mandate helmet use for riders under twenty one and all riders on Interstate Highways. I knew Jay would follow the polls and healthcare statistics and veto Senate Bill 202. Now I know that’s upsetting to allot of us. But to those who are upset, let me ask: do you want a Governor who will cater to the interest of the few (unfortunately, in this case: us)? Or do you want a Governor who is always seeking to do what he, in good

conscious, believes is in the best interests of the majority of our State’s citizens? Now I must concede that it is a sad fact that it seems everyone is more concerned about their own rights than we are about the rights of others. I therefore Thank God for our Constitution and its limitations upon government. And I want to emphasize that I am NOT supporting either of our political parties here. In truth, my personal view is that both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are dominated by their respective special interest groups. Therefore, lacking to date a truly viable third party, each of us should vote independently. (Didn’t we just celebrate Independence Day?) We should seek to elect and support good men and women to hold public office. As someone who has personally known Jay Nixon for a long time, I can tell you from personal knowledge, he is a good man. And if you really wish to enjoy the “wind in our hair experience”, remember that we live in a Constitutional Republic. Laws vary

from state to state. Illinois does not require you to wear a helmet. Those of us living in Eastern Missouri need only ride across a ferry or bridge if we consider Missouri’s mandatory helmet law oppressive. Is this a great country, or what?

STURGIS ON THE RIVER ‘09

Better described as Sturgis at the Fairgrounds, the ’09 event was actually held at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa, over the June 18-20th weekend. This was their 15th annual meet, so everyone knew what to expect, or so they thought. The wild card this year was the weather, as it has been in years past. Besides being hot, weather conditions were very unstable as they have been for several years. Last year at about the same time, it rained more or less continuously for 3 weeks, resulting in the massive flooding which forced them to move from the Davenport levee to the fairgrounds. This year, rain was in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, but no one expected the 75 MPH winds that roared into the fairgrounds between 4 and 6 PM Friday afternoon. The main casualty was the 60’x80’ Budweiser tent that housed the main stage, which was literally ripped from its moorings and shredded by the Davenport police as they used machetes to free the people trapped under the canvas. Saturday, however, provided nearly perfect conditions and attracted about 10,000 bikers. Along with about 100 vendors and the new Tattoo Artist Showcase, they scheduled a book signing by John Rock ‘n Ride, a rat bike show, Biker Billy cookin’ with fire, the American Wall of Death thrill riders, the Budweiser

Clydesdales, bands on 3 stages, the Rolling Thunder 1/2 mile flat track races, and final judging for the Miss Scooter Girl contest. I didn’t stay long enough to see the Clydesdales or which babe won Miss Scooter Girl, but did have a chance to get into the pits at the races to watch a little practice after about 3:30. They had been drowned out the day before, but got in at least 2 hours on Saturday. I’m always impressed by the privateers, who often drive all night, sleep in their vans, eat beans and weenies, set up their own bikes, then risk their lives all for the pure love of racing. I talked with several riders throughout the afternoon, but was especially impressed with Dan Gedeon from Ohio, who was campaigning 2 expertly prepared XR750s owned by Skip Eakins. Skip isn’t feeling to good lately, and entrusted Dan with his machines at the beginning of the season. I was also looking forward to photographing the Rat Bike show that “Big Schwag” was scheduled to judge. I kept checking at the Hardee’s information booth but, apparently, it was finally cancelled due to lack of interest. From the look of the promotional materials included in my press kit, it seems that the promoters, Indoor Outdoor Productions, may be planning a name change for the event, which will probably become the Mississippi River Motorcycle Rally in the future. It’s the largest meet of its kind in eastern Iowa and western Illinois, so be sure to mark your calendar next year.

F#$@ING AUGUST I hope nobody is reading this yet because your all in STURGIS ,but if you couldn’t make it then I hope you enjoy my own thoughts on the , I hate to beat a dead horse but here we go one last time, at least this year, the F%^$ING HELMET LAW. By now most if not everyone knows the governor VETOED it. That said I did a little poll of my own randomly picking numbers out of the phone book you may have gotten a call from me I had some hang up and most were polite once they knew I wasn’t a telemarketer or some asshole trying to scam them . My thoughts were I wanted to see if 84 % of Missourians opposed the helmet law as stated by our beloved media both on the news and in the newspaper so I called a hundred people off and on over a couple of weeks you would think with 84 % of people opposed that at least 8 out of every 10 I called would be against it. I mean this is how you conduct a pilot poll isn’t it. Well to my surprise that wasn’t the case. First off I didn’t ask if they rode a bike and I didn’t ask their age, race or religion I simply introduced myself and explained why I was calling and that I randomly picked them out of a phonebook and simply asked if they were in favor of the helmet law or against it 46 of them had no idea what the helmet law was even about 21 were against it as I said didn’t ask nothing other than for or against 24 didn’t care one way or the other and only 9 were for it. So similar to what the polls in the media say might not be that far off that is if you take all 3 of the others and add them together this is what they must have done. What amazed me was almost half didn’t even have a clue to the law so in my little poll the people I asked were ordinary everyday people I didn’t target any age ,race ,sex, or religion so I feel mine is a true measure . REMEMBER BEFORE YOU FLIP OUT ON ME THIS WAS MY WAY OF RESEARCH. I was reading one of my old EASYRIDER magazines this weekend I like to go back from time to time and check out how the motorcycle world has changed and BELIEVE ME it has. Anyway I came upon an article in a July 1988 edition on trying to pass the helmet law. Now I know this has been going on longer than 1988 but for safe measure I’m going to use this date that means that this battle over the RIGHT TO DECIDE at a minimum has been going on MORE THAN 20 F%$#ING YEARS now I don’t know about you but to me that’s pretty F^%$ING sad. How much money and effort has been spent to keep you as Americans safe from yourselves , I think we probably could have spent that money on more important things maybe like keeping jobs in our state and in others that border us . But don’t worry it’s going to be OK because our governor went against the peoples wishes and VETOED your RIGHT TO DECIDE that’s right your elected officials diligently worked to get it done and all their work and money spent AGAIN WAS WAISTED. So maybe next year. I personally would like to thank each and every organization and people, and there are many for their HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT AND OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO DID WHAT THEY COULD DO TO LET US HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE. Tortilla Soup Sent in by Pepe Lopez

Ingredients 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil 1 cup diced red onion 1 1/4 pounds ground turkey breast 4 cups chicken stock 1 teaspoon crushed garlic 1 (4-ounce) can diced green chiles 3/4 cup tomato puree 1 tablespoon enchilada sauce mix (recommended: Lawryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) 1 avocado, pit removed, flesh chopped 1 cup shredded Mexican-cheese blend 3/4 cup crushed baked blue corn chips (recommended: Guiltless Gourmet) 1/4 cup sour cream 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Heat a large pot over medium-high heat, add oil, the onions and ground turkey. Saute until turkey is just cooked; stirring frequently to break up clumps. Add the chicken stock to the pan and stir in garlic, chiles, tomato puree and enchilada sauce mix. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Put some of the chopped avocado in the bottom of each bowl and ladle the soup on top; stir to combine. Top with cheese, crushed chips and sour cream. Garnish with cilantro.

By Peter Schneider Liquid Illusions This month I wanted to find someone whose work can really stand out in a crowd, someone who not only has a passion for art, but also a passion for motorcycles, and has a way of mixing the two very well. When thinking of these things and who to choose for my piece; it was pretty obvious who to choose, the one and only Mr. Darren Williams of Liquid Illusions. Like many of the artists I have come in contact with, Darren started his passion for art at a young age. Even in his high school years Darren was making money doing sketches for people. After high school He went on to doing many jobs all employing his skills as an artist. Darren has done jobs all the way across the board from t-shirt design to Illustrating children’s books, fashion magazines, etc. In 1998 Darren’s sister was showing off some his art work to a gentleman, and the guy like it so much he wanted Darren to paint his bike for him. After the job was done the gentleman was so stoked with the job that three of his buddies showed up the following week to have their bikes painted by Darren, thus inspired Darren to start Liquid Illusions. Liquid Illusions was started back in 1999, Since it’s opening Darren Has Painted bikes for hundreds of people, some of which include: Billy Lane, Sucker Punch Sally’s, Bare Knuckle Choppers, just to name a few. His skills have also evolved over the years going from not just airbrushing bikes, but building some of the most radical, original rolling works of art you will see roaring down the street. Darren is truly a unique artist from his airbrushing skills to the incredibly wicked bikes he’s built. Everything he does stand out in a crowd. Whether on the street or at a show if u see something Liquid illusions has done u will recognize it. It will truly be a totally awesome piece of art work.

Coventry-Eagle 980 Flying Eight World Record Sidecar- 1929 This stunning Coventry-Eagle Flying8 is photographed on the banking of the Brooklands track where it set the new 200-mile sidecar record in 1929. November in Britain is not the ideal time for record-breaking, but the Olympia Motor Cycle Show and Showtime records were always good publicity. So, in 1929, lashed by driving rain on the bleak concrete banking of the Brooklands track, the one –legged rider Harold Taylor and his passenger J.M. Waterman set a new 200-mile sidecar record of 81 mph with the JAP-engine Coventry-Eagle Flying8. It had already set 4 hour and 9 hour sidecar records of 65 mph and 66.5 mph in 1925. The massive silencer was mandatory since Brooklands was set in a residential area in Surrey’s exclusive “stockbroker belt”. Powered by JAP Coventry-Eagle was one of the 23 different British marques powered by the JAP engines, which held 171 speed records at the beginning of 1930, including the world speed record of 130 mph set by a 1000cc JAP-engined Brough Superior in 1929. A Rival of Brough With its saddle tank, the Coventry- Eagle Flying8 resembled the Brough Superior. Hardly surprising, George Brough and Percy Mayo had sketched out plans for their ideal motorcycle. The first Flying8 had a 976cc side valve JAP engine and was good for 81 mph. It was replaced by an ohv version in 1926. Unlike Brough Superior, which only built exclusive luxury machines, Coventry-Eagle offered a wide range in all classes. But in 1939 Coventry-Eagle ceased manufacture. LIMITED-SPACE MANEUVERING

In the Basic Rider Course (BRC), we teach students how to ride motorcycles using proper techniques and interactive classroom activities. While learning the proper skills and techniques in the classroom is very useful, there is no substitute for actual hands on learning. The course is designed to take someone that has never ridden a motorcycle before on Friday night and by Sunday afternoon, having them doing figure 8’s in a small defined area. As instructors, we are there to help guide their development in acquiring basic motorcycle maneuvering skills. You might ask yourself, “Why would I need to know how maneuver a motorcycle in limited areas”? If you ride a motorcycle long enough, there will come a time when you have to make tight turns at low speeds, u-turns on narrow roads, or simple having to turn around in a small parking area. To simulate a narrow road or small parking area, we use a 20 by 60 foot painted box on a BRC course. The objective is to ride into the box, perform 2 consecutive u-turns, one in each direction, then exit the box at the other end. Sounds easy right? This maneuver can be very intimidating for someone who has never ridden before. Not to mention there are numerous skills required to be able to perform these tasks. Such as; clutch control, counter weighting, balance, and proper speed, using the friction zone and looking through the turns. There are so many things going on that for a new rider they have a tendency to give up before they even start. Probably the hardest part of this is getting the student to turn their head. Here is what typically happens when the student enters the box. They start the turn, and about half way through they will look straight ahead or look down. Either of which will cause you to straighten up and not turn or cause you to start to fall over because of the slow speed. You should be looking where you want the motorcycle to go. In this case, looking at the other end of the box where the next u-turn is located will force you to turn your head to see the other end. Remember, the motorcycle goes where you look, so if you are looking through the turn at the other end, you won’t be worrying about the ground or the edge of the box. Your hands will follow your eyes causing you to turn the motorcycle. As you start the next u-turn, look at the exit because that is where you want the motorcycle to go. Here are a few tips on maneuvering in limited spaces. Turn your head. Don’t look down at the ground; look into your next turn/your exit to the box. Don’t try using just the throttle to adjust your speed, instead use a combination of clutch and throttle. Using the friction zone will allow you to control your speed much easier in slow turns. Use counter weighting to help with balancing the motorcycle. By shifting your weight to the outside of the turn, you will be able to lean the motorcycle in the direction of the turn, allowing you to make a smoother, tighter turn. The principals are simple, and the key is to practice, practice, and practice! Empty parking lots are much safer to learn these skills rather than having to learn them at a busy intersection.
