Endgame: Duchamp, chess and the avant-garde 29th October 2016 to 22nd January 2017 Curated by Manuel Segade Follow this exhibition on social media: #Fidepartida

Endgame. Duchamp, chess and the avant-garde is an account of twentieth-century avant-garde movements up to the beginning of conceptual art, told from the angle of what appears to be a minor anecdote: the game of chess. By revealing its ongoing presence throughout a variety of different currents, we are able to observe the shift from the pleasure of play to the analysis of language. It is the path that leads from the Fauvist figuration of the 1910s to the symbolic tradition of Surrealism and finally, to its culmination in art as idea in Conceptual Art, by way of the leading artists of the modern era. The Fundació Joan Miró is a remarkable space created by Joan Miró himself with the idea of making art accessible to all. The collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and works on paper displayed at the Fundació is one of the most comprehensive selections of Miró’s oeuvre, offering a thorough overview of all the stages of his life and career. Eight distinct but interconnected sections allow visitors to explore all aspects of the work and personal language of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century: “The Land”, “Beyond Painting”, “Violence”, “Escape”, “Anonymity”, “Poetry and Silence”, “Anti-Painting”, “Sobreteixims”, and “Art and Everyday Life” illustrate the key concepts in Miró’s thinking and his oeuvre, and show his desire to transcend conventional painting. The paintings related to Surrealism and the works based on the Spanish Civil War are particularly noteworthy due to their artistic and poetic significance. Other important pieces include the large canvases Miró produced from the late seventies onwards, which are characterised by large fields of colour and free gesture.

Infinite Sequence An exhibition of the work of Ignasi Aballí, winner of the 2015 Joan Miró Prize Curated by Ignasi Aballí and Martina Millà Follow this exhibition on social media: #IgnasiAballí

Infinite Sequence is an exhibition dedicated to the work of Ignasi Aballí, winner of the 2015 Joan Miró Prize. It proposes a stroll through a selection of pieces by Catalonia’s foremost conceptual artist to allow visitors to gradually discover some of the key aspects of his oeuvre. The presentation of the selected works eludes a strict retrospective format to give way to an exhibition narrative with moments and spaces that relate to one another. Together, they evolve as a composition that, in its conclusion, points to the idea of infinite continuity and open repetition, as referred to in the title of the exhibition itself. The exhibition starts with pieces dealing with temporality, followed by a room dedicated to Aballí’s work on colour, and by another room dedicated to absence and invisibility, to conclude with a projection room featuring his video work on processes of semantic slippage. The exhibition includes works from the 1990s to the present as well as a number of new productions.

Nadala Nadalitats Luis Bisbe Follow this project on social media: #Nadalitats

Every year the Fundaci贸 Joan Mir贸 showcases a purposebuilt installation created by an artist who makes his own interpretation of one of the characteristic themes of Christmas. This year, Luis Bisbe proposes a dialogue between the olive tree as a sculptural object and the objectified sculptures on the terraces of the Fundaci贸 Mir贸. Bisbe views Christmas as a time of presences and absences and with this installation he highlights the presence of the object rather than what it represents. 14

Joaquim Gomis Gimeno Foundry

Lluís Maria Riera Urban cut-outs

In the mid-forties, amateur photographer Joaquim Gomis visited Gimeno Foundry with his friend Joan Miró. At the foundry, Gomis found material paying tribute to the leaders of Franco’s dictatorship, as well as remnants of artistic movements prior to the Republic. Gomis was able to photograph the improvised assemblage with the subtle irony that this highly restrictive period called for.

Lluís Maria Riera, an amateur photographer closely associated with the Fundació Joan Miró and the Galeria Joan Prats, was a friend of Miró, Tàpies and Brossa, as well as other artists. He helped them set up exhibitions and this close working relationship transformed his gaze into a selective and careful analysis of the details around him.

16.02.17 — 21.05.17 Self-organisation. DIY Practices The exhibition traces the genealogy of do-it-yourself practices in the field of art production and features works by artists who, starting in the early 1960s, have taken it upon themselves to monitor the production, display and reception of their own works. As a result, they have also touched upon issues of authorship and have decisively empowered their own artistic practices.

30.03.17 — 02.07.17 À toute épreuve Miró. Documents Exhibition programme Exhibition about the artist’s book À toute épreuve, produced in close collaboration by the poet Paul Éluard, the artist Joan Miró and the publisher Gérald Cramer over a ten-year period (1948-1958). With this project, the exhibition curator, Christopher Green, focuses on the way Miró fulfilled his wish to create a book-object that transcended the simple illustration of the poet’s words.

19.06.17 — 01.10.17 The Way Things Go — A tribute In the summer of 2017, the Fundació Joan Miró will mark the 30th anniversary of Fischli & Weiss’ epoch-making film with an exhibition curated by Barcelona-based artist Serafín Álvarez. The exhibition will feature work by several emerging artists produced for the occasion as a tribute to the Swiss duo. The original film itself will also be screened in parallel with the exhibition.

2016 — 2018 Beehave — Art and bees in the city With its Beehave project the Fundació Joan Miró seeks to show the potential of urban beekeeping to the Barcelona public. A group of local as well as international artists will place public art works made with beehives throughout the city parks and gardens thus highlighting current crosspollination between art practices and environmental concerns. In collaboration with Ajuntament de Barcelona and Apicultura Urbana.

One Foot Out. Expeditions and Diasporas Programme curated by Jordi Antas Follow this exhibition programme on social media: #Peuafora

The exhibition programme One Foot Out. Expeditions and Diasporas explores aspects of belonging to and breaking away from an artistic context. Projects that begin with a voluntary dispersion based on processes and questions: what is generated in the distance, and what can be brought back. Six separate solo shows that are all grounded in uncertainty and explore the relationships that form around them, in order to offer a more plural, liberated vision. The participating artists move between performativity and audience involvement, fiction, and unexpected situations. A diasporic view.

24th September to 6th November Fiction is a reality yet to happen Ana Garcia-Pineda

An essay-exhibition by Ana Garcia-Pineda that revolves around drawing and narrative, combining various concepts: the theory of possible worlds, the concept of truth in fiction, and the study of the real through the unreal. Various visual narratives and parallel illusions allow Garcia-Pineda to move through possible worlds that converge and interact. Places and spaces that explore the potentiality of possibility and speculate on the consequences arising from the changing laws and rules of our logical nature.

Activities Self-Organisation. DIY Practices

In spring 2017, the Fundaciรณ Joan Mirรณ will be staging Self-Organisation. DIY Practices, an exhibition curated by Antonio Ortega that traces the genealogy of do-it-yourself artistic practices from the sixties to the present. To do so, he has called upon a personal selection of artists who have given a new direction to their working process allowing them to gain authority over the narrative.

DIY politics in the essay film

Doropaedia: Self-organisation

Artist and researcher Núria Gómez Gabriel in conversation with Gonzalo de Lucas, lecturer in film at the UPF, programmer for the Xcèntric film season (CCCB) DIY politics in the essay film seeks to revise the historical overview of film-making practices that question the models of the major film industries in order to put forward other visual economies based on autonomy and the systems of material (self-)organisation.

Daniel Granados returns to his Doropaedia – “gilded encyclopaedia” – project, by proposing an activity based on the concept of self-organisation. The idea of self-organisation will be addressed from many different angles – from creation to thought – using the format of a radio show that combines conversations and live music performances.
