Good to see you! There are few non-governmental initiatives which have helped shape the social landscape of a country in the way that the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has influenced Poland. The charity, established by Jurek Owsiak, has been active since 1993 and it grew to be one of the best-known charities in the country. Its work is now almost synonymous with charitable initiative, voluntary service and social involvement for citizens of Poland and Polish community overseas. The charity works to improve the conditions at public hospitals in Poland, mainly focusing on different branches of paediatrics.
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has raised 951 000 000 PLN (over 222 000 000 EURO) and purchased 59 700 pieces of equipment ranging from CT scanners and genetic laboratory equipment to ambulances, incubators and thousands of hospital beds and modern medical supplies. The charity has initiated, finances, and helps run 6 medical projects, which systematically transform Polish medicine. The charity also promotes first aid and CPR knowledge by running an educational initiative which to date has introduced first aid almost 3 000 000 children from primary schools across the country.

How to volunteer with us? Volunteering with us is easy. First of all, you need to get in touch with your local Collection Centre and the people organizing their edition of the fundraiser will be able to provide you with information about volunteering. You can register online or on the Collection Centre’s premises.
Discover the Grand Finale Fundraiser! The Grand Finale fundraiser is a one-day public charitable fundraiser, which traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of January. The collection is held internationally and it is managed by the local hubs of charitable activity – Collection Centres. 1700 Collection Centres organize the work of 120 000 volunteers. Our charitable Orchestra “plays” across the world –wherever there is an active and thriving Polish community abroad: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, across Europe, in Americas and on board of Polish ships and vessels and even at the North Pole research station! Since 1993, Grand Finale fundraiser is held in aid of a specific medical objective. Our main goal is to support Polish children’s hospitals by the purchase of modern medical equipment. We also finance 6 medical and one educational initiative. Benefactors can support the initiative by putting money in the Collection Boxes, making online and mobile transfers as well as taking part in charitable auctions held via Allegro platform. At 8:00 PM we all gather to witness a spectacular light show. Known as “Light to the Sky”, the display is meant to bring people together to celebrate the community and to alight the winter sky with a positive message. Another highlight of the day comes at 11 PM. We auction off some of the most precious lots – Golden Heart pins and Golden SIM Cards are sold during an exciting bidding war which is broadcast during a live telethon. At midnight we announce the preliminary results of the charitable collection.

A Collection Centre can register a limited number of volunteers, so you must be sure you can help out on the day of the Grand Finale. If you are not going to be able to devote your time on the day of the Grand Finale, don’t worry. You can still help the Collection Centre organise the work before the main event there’s plenty to do before the fundraising party takes over the country.
On the day of the Grand Finale Once you have collected your ID card, Collection Box (secured with official banderols) and a supply of red heart stickers you will give out to people who donated to our cause, you are ready to take part in the fundraiser. You will be collecting funds in public spaces and during specially organized events. In exchange for donations, people receive stickers in a shape of our logo. Everyone in Poland knows our heart-shaped symbol! Please make sure to read and follow all Rules and Regulations. Our collection lasts for one day only and you should not do a door-to-door fundraiser. Be courteous, friendly, and polite!
9
How to establish a Collection Centre? Once you made sure that there hasn’t been a Collection Centre already established in your area, you can begin your work to hold the fundraiser locally: 1. Gather a group of activists, who will be running the work of the Centre with you. Read all relevant documents and Rules and Regulations. 2. Choose the person who will be responsible for the work of the Collection Centre. 3. The Chief of the Collection Centre must register in our database – fill in our questionnaire, read and accepts Rules & Regulations, and register the Collection Centre. 4. The staff at the Foundation can reject an application to register a Collection Centre, however, once we receive a set of correctly signed and stamped documents we usually allow volunteers to proceed. As people responsible for the local editions of event, you are the ones making it all possible and we salute and thank you. Thanks to your commitment and hard work we are able to help thousands of children in Poland and countless others get to enjoy a fun-filled day! Thank you and keep rocking!
Sponsor a Collection Centre! Local Collection Centres rely on local support to hold their editions of the fundraiser, and if you have the means or funds to help these local activists you should go for it. You can support the Collection Centre financially or donate useful items (such as office supplies or snacks and beverages) or provide them with services (security or sound engineering, for example). You should get in touch with the staff at the Collection Centre to find out what they might need and what you can help them with. Contact details are available on our website. You can browse through Collection Centres which have been officially registered by the Foundation. The Collection Centres can publicize their sponsors in return for their help. Events held during the Grand Finale enjoy a lot of public and media attention. The charitable fundraiser is a great chance to showcase social responsibility of your business.

Our Finances and Accountability Fundraising practices Our main fundraising activity is the annual, one-day public charitable collection. There are 120 000 volunteers collecting funds in Poland and abroad, 1 700 Collection Centres hold a variety of fundraising events and initiatives, businesses collect funds on their premises and we run different online fundraisers. Our benefactors can make direct bank transfers or donate 1% of their tax return in aid of our mission. 92% of the money raised goes towards the purchase of medical equipment and running and financing our medical and educational initiatives. Our administrative costs amount to just 8%. According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, we represent the best result of relation cost vs charitable activities among NGOs working in the country.
Financial reports and transparency It takes us 1.5 years to file a complete financial report of how we managed the money raised at the Grand Finale fundraiser, because we need to get through all requests for equipment we received from the hospitals, hold open tenders to buy the equipment, and wait for equipment to be delivered to hospitals. Only then we are able to file our financial report. We strive to be transparent, honest and accountable for the funds we raised. Our performance is audited by independent surveyors. We submit our financial reports to all relevant supervisory bodies – relevant revenue offices, Ministries of Health, Administration, Labour and Social Policy and Ministry of Finances.
Support our mission! Your donations have the power to change the conditions at public hospitals in Poland! You can donate online, on our website or send a direct money transfer to our account. Benefactors paying taxes in Poland can also choose our charity as recipients of 1% of their tax. We receive donations made via Facebook fundraisers and other digital platforms. You can also buy our official merchandise at SiemaShop and all proceeds made from the sale of our gadgets go towards our charitable mission.

Equipment Purchases Each Grand Finale fundraiser is held in aid of a specific branch of medicine. We begin with compiling hospital requests for equipment. We then hold Open Tenders, where our medical and technical experts assess offers made by the manufacturers and dealers of medical equipment. We are able to negotiate the best possible deals on equipment. The report of the purchases made at each Open Tender is filed with the relevant Ministries. Having accounted for all purchases we submit full financial report listing: the amount, worth, quality, and type of equipment we purchased. We also inform the Ministry about where the equipment is donated and what other initiatives have been financed with the funds raised during the public collection.
You can check how we spent your donation! Everyone can look into our spending practices. Website nacoidamojepieniadze.wosp. org.pl provides a detailed breakdown of our expenses, accounting for how much money went towards the purchase of equipment and how much was used to finance medical and educational initiatives.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR NON-INVASIVE RESPIRATORY SUPPORT OF NEW-BORNS - INFANT FLOW
.
NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY
Nationwide Programme for Prevention and Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity We have launched and equipped 19 specialist laser therapy centres allowing the diagnosis and treatment of children whose retina has been damaged due to premature birth. By the end of 2017, the Foundation equipped all neonatal intensive care units in Poland with 122 ophthalmoscopes (used to see inside the fundus of the eye) and 24 laser devices. By the end of 2017 doctors have examined and diagnosed 215 453 prematurely born babies and have performed 9 028 laser operations and saved the eyesight of 8 680 babies!
Nationwide Programme for Non-invasive Respiratory Support of New-borns - ‚Infant Flow’ Our goal is to lower the number of cases in which mechanical ventilation of premature babies and new-borns is necessary. Mechanical ventilation often leads to severe pulmonary complications. In 2003 we introduced a modern and non-invasive method, which does not require for the infant to be intubated. What is more, it is safe to use on even the smallest new-borns. By the end of 2017, we have registered 52 200 cases. Find out more: en.wosp.org.pl/medycyna/programy/wspomaganie-oddechu

Nationwide Programme for Early Cancer Diagnosis in Children
We base this nationwide programme on three main pillars: diagnostics, state-of-the-art equipment, and cancer awareness. We have financed 80 diagnostic centres for treating cancer in children. We’ve equipped numerous diagnostic units and cancer clinics with 80 high-tech ultrasound scanners (each worth about 400.000 PLN), we furnished major Polish children’s cancer clinics with specialised equipment. We also provided equipment worth 2 500 000 PLN (580 000 EUR) which was necessary to establish a Central Laboratory of Genetic Research in Children’s Oncology - ONCOLAB in Łódź. We work all year round! Even though we are best-known for our annual fundraising drive, our charity works all year round to ensure that children in Polish hospitals receive the best possible care. We have donated equipment for:
Dignified care for the elderly
Paediatric oncology & haematology Paediatric cardiac surgery Paediatric Nephrology Paediatric anaesthesiology & neonatal intensive care Neonatal surgery Paediatric Gastroenterology Paediatrics Neonatology Paediatric traumatology & orthopaedic surgery Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology, audiology and Phoniatrics
Our attention has been drawn to the dire condition of geriatric and long-term care units in Polish hospitals. It was obvious that these wards were in a desperate condition – lacking not only high-tech medical equipment but also some of the most basic furnishings. Our charity decided to take up the action and ensure that elderly patients can receive medical care in dignified conditions.
We have collected funds for the geriatrics four times so far - in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 effectively donating almost 13 642 devices worth over 99 000 000 PLN (over 23 000 000 EUR) to 314 medical facilities in Poland.   We have donated: 8 289 beds
Paediatric Urology
1 590 anti-bedsore mattresses
Paediatric diabetology
875 wheelchairs
Paediatric Ophthalmology
229 patient lifts
Paediatric pulmonology
286 bath chairs Hopefully, our activities will also serve to raise awareness about how important dignity in the medical care of elderly patients is and make public regard the elderly with more respect and attention.

Love Heals One of the key factors in a child’s treatment and recovery is its emotional comfort, stability, and stress-free environment and that’s why it is essential for parents, guardians and loved ones to be present by the little patient’s bedsides. The Foundation’s board made a commitment to change bad conditions at paediatric wards and purchase recliners, chairs and fold-up beds to be used by parents staying by their children’s bedsides. We bought and donated 4 874* recliners and chairs which will serve parents staying with their children in 469 hospitals across the country. *data from 24.11.2018
We know that love heals, so we are aiming to transform Polish hospitals into places where comfort and modern technology can bring healing to those in need!
Fighting cancer together!
We help disabled children
We would like to use the good practices established in Zduńska-Wola Treatment and Diagnosis Centre to inspire the creation of similar medical facilities across the country. Our dream is to establish many more cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities, train doctors and medical staff to improve the chances of diagnosing and curing cancer in Polish women. Unfortunately, each year approximately 80 000 women are diagnosed with cancer, while breast cancer is still the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer in Poland.
Even though our main focus is on purchasing equipment for Polish hospitals, we decided to finance the purchase of rehabilitation equipment for individuals – disabled children and young people under 26 years of age. Since launching this initiative in 2005, we were able to finance rehabilitation equipment for 5 388 patients, spending 21 857 294,54 PLN (over 5 000 000 EUR). Find out more: en.wosp.org.pl/medycyna/programy/pomoc-indywidualna
The Regional Centre for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment has been opened in Zduńska Wola in October 2018 and it has been furnished with equipment provided by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation. Having seen the strides doctors from Zduńska-Wola are making in preventing and treating women’s cancer, we want more similar medical facilities to be established across the country. Such centres will improve women’s cancer treatment in Poland by enabling doctors to discover cancer symptoms as early as possible.

Charitable run In order to raise diabetes awareness in Poland, we decided to hold a charitable run in aid of buying personal insulin pumps. The main event takes place in Warsaw, where 5000 runners participate in a 5K race. Money raised through the sale of starter packs go towards the purchase of personal insulin pumps. The event can take different forms when organized by different Collection Centres - it can be a jog, or a Nordic walking race, for example. They have one objective – to show our support of people struggling with diabetes and promote a healthy lifestyle! Find out more: en.wosp.org.pl/final/bieg
Get Even with Diabetes It is estimated that there are 3 million people with diabetes in Poland and 1/3 of them might not even know about their disease. The key element of living with diabetes is managing insulin intake, so having a reliable information about the sugar content is extremely important. We’ve teamed up with food manufacturers, who pledged to put relevant nutritional information on food packaging, making it much easier to calculate blood sugar levels on the go.

All teaching aids and courses are free! Parents can check if their child’s school is enrolled in our programme. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide such free training and teaching aids to older children, but you should get in touch with your local primary school to arrange a course.
CPR for Schools – our educational initiative
We have teamed up with local volunteer fire departments. Volunteer firefighters are trained first responders and local heroes are eager to share their knowledge with school children and teach them first aid and CPR.
The initiative was launched in 2006. We want to introduce universal CPR and first aid education to all primary school children. We organize free training courses, where qualified instructors show primary school teachers all they need to know about CPR and teaching first aid to their young pupils. We also provide books and teaching aids to schools taking part in the initiative, so that children from primary schools nationwide have access to free, universal first aid and CPR education! 28 858 teachers took part in the training 12 337 schools participate in the programme 91% of schools in the country participate in the educational initiative 3 000 000 children learned CPR
Learning CPR can be fun We want to promote first aid and CPR knowledge, so we hold two events aiming to show how easy and fun it is to learn CPR. CPR for Schools Competition is addressed to schools taking part in our educational initiative. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the educational competition, which consists of 3 stages. Each competition stage is designed to test their knowledge, creativity and skills, and the final of the competition is an exciting location-based game taking the kids across famous Warsaw landmarks. Record in Simultaneous CPR session is a nationwide event, held in aid of European Restart a Heart Day. We want to promote CPR knowledge everywhere by encouraging organizations and individuals to take part in a simultaneous CPR session. In 6 years of our activity, we have been joined by over 500 000 people!

Inclusive event We want to open the festival experience to persons with disabilities, and we aimed to foster a wider understanding of accessibility issues – using the festival as an opportunity to reach a huge group of people. We decided to expand the facilities for wheelchair users, by building a wheelchair ramp in front of the Main Stage. Other facilities included accessible toilets, shower stalls, accessible food stalls and ramps leading to AFA tents. What is more, festivalgoers could take part in awareness workshops. All meetings at AFA were translated into sign language and festival-goers could take part in sign language courses. Another innovation was rental of bone conduction backpacks and headphones, which allowed the Deaf festivalgoers to feel the music, opening the festival experience to them. Backpacks were available for rent free of charge. We are very proud of what we achieved in making the festival a more inclusive event, and we aim to put even more effort into setting a new standard of an open festival!

Wait, there’s more! We aim to go far beyond supporting medicine in Poland, engaging in different humanitarian initiatives and working on different platforms: In 1997 we have organised 156 aid convoys, which brought supplies to flood-stricken regions of southern Poland. In 1999 we have organised a medical convoy for Albanian refugees. In 2005 we have purchased medical equipment for tsunami-stricken hospitals in Sri Lanka. We have supplied 5 hospitals with much-needed devices. In 2006 we have supported Polish Firefighting Services. In 2010 we have organised ‚Small Finale’ themed ‚Stop Floods!’. The funds were raised in aid of Polish Voluntary Firefighting Services enabling us to equip 564 units.
Charitable football game We played the beautiful game to raise money to buy a modern and fully-equipped ambulance for Teaching Hospital in Poznań. This time we have won the game and the team was lead by Jurek Owsiak. We have raised enough money to buy the best emergency vehicle which will be used to transport the most vulnerable patients. 1.4 million fans gathered in front of their TV screens to follow the exciting game!
In 2012 we have donated 100 ‚Braille typewriters’ for blind pupils from Kibeho school in Rwanda. In 2013 we have organised first Now! Go Online conference on implementation of new technologies and how online presence can shape the work of the third sector. In 2014 we have invited Polish NGOs to attend meetings and seminars on NGOs and the digital world.
